kaleidoscope THE EDITORIAL EXPERIENCE A newsletter publication is quite a challenging activity. I have a natural inclination towards literature and I often read novels, short stories, poems, etc. I get immense joy when I read, still more when I write my own poems or articles….. a delight to pleasure. When I was selected as the student editor, my joy had no limits. Thus, I started working on the school newsletter. We collected articles from the entire school - some gave it willingly, while the others................not so. But ultimately, we ended with up a huge pile of write-ups. The wide range of material covered articles, poems, stories, experiences, travelogues, facts, pictures, paintings etc. We went through them thoroughly and many of them proved to be extremely well composed. So, I would like to thank all the contributors to the newsletter without whom this would have been not possible. I would like to appreciate all their efforts. I got great support from the editor, Mrs. Archana Hulawale. She encouraged me in every possible manner such that the final product for which we were working on, for over a month was a commendable one. We have made an honest effort to make this edition a remarkable one. I do not know how far I have succeeded in my maiden effort. Only the readers will be able to give justice to it. According to me the readers are the true jury. And of course, I would like to thank my teachers for having faith in me and selecting me as the editor. I hope everyone will appreciate our literary creation. Indeed, it was a great learning experience. Sumedh Badve (Student Editor)

IN HIGH SPIRITS The word ‘school’ is not music to everyone’s ears. Everyone does not get very excited with the word. But 14th of October, was very different than any other ordinary day at school. It was the last day of the first term. We were all done with our mid terms; the Annual Concert had been a huge success. A huge responsibility was lifted of from our shoulders. Everybody was just waiting for the holidays to commence. ‘Bollywood and Traditional’ was the theme given to us and we were told that the best dressed would be given a award. Everybody was very excited and were dressed in their best clothes. One could see girls dressed in sarees, boys in kurta pyjiamas and a few boys & girls were dressed up as celebrities. It was an experience one could not afford to miss. We had our regular lessons and after lunch, we were summoned to the basement. A few well dressed boys and girls were selected. We had absolutely no idea of what the school had arranged for us. It was not only the selected students but teachers also who walked down the ramp. Miss Rutuja Bhujbal from class X Alpha, Miss Ayushi Ghosh from IX Beta, Master Atharva Bhosale from VII Beta and Master Amey Pandit from X Alpha were declared as the best dressed students. Mrs. Varsha Joshi, our Marathi teacher, Mrs. Aruna Tikone, our yoga teacher and Mr. Ravi Kamble, our sport sir were declared as best dressed teachers. After the declaration of winners, the students were given the liberty to dance for some time. Like every good must come to an end, time was up, We stopped dancing. The day had just become a sweet memory and now, when we look back at that day, there is a smile on each one of our faces. A huge smile, of course. Prakriti Kayastha (X Alpha)

India being the largest democracy in the world with a civilization more than five thousand years old booasts of multiple cultural origins. India is a land of diverse cultures, religions, and communities. There is great diversity in our traditions, manners, habits, tastes and customs. Each and every region of the country portrays different customs and traditions. Wordpower MOM AND DAD'S CORNER BREAKFAST: THE MOST IMPORTANT MEAL OF THE DAY!!!!!

We all hope to make our children a better version of ourselves. We expect them to be flawless and often our expectations of them are larger than life. We want to live our dreams through them, whether they want us to or not. All children are unique and trying to mould them as per our specification fractures their personalities. Being a parent is one of the toughest jobs in the world. Here’s presenting a prayer which will connect with every parent.

Eating breakfast is the secret to staying healthy. They believe skipping the first meal of the day increases the chances of becoming obese, developing diabetes or even having a heart attack. Breakfast is the first and the most important meal of the day. It’s the energy pack which lets you kick out of the dizzy morning feeling and gives you the boost for starting a good morning. Well, actually a good breakfast is the recipe for a good morning. Breakfast should be a priority on everybody. It actually sets you prepare for the day and promote short-term memory, energy and vitality, mental and physical alertness, focus and concentration, lower levels of stress and a healthier body weight. Skipping breakfast is a very usual practice among children, teenagers, adolescents and elders who want to reduce their weights. If breakfast is not taken on time, one would feel quite hungry by the lunchtime, and then would not care for the amount and the quality of food that he would consume during his or her lunch. Studies find that people who skip breakfast are likely to have problems with concentration, metabolism and weight. Skipping breakfast especially among children affects mental performance in the class. Children who take breakfast regularly are more active and alert than the children who skip breakfast. Not only mental performance, academic performance and physical performance of the children who take breakfast daily are better than the children who skip breakfast. They perform better in school, pay more attention, are more creative, have higher concentration and score more and better marks in the tests.

Excuses for not eating breakfast could include any of the following: No time: How much time does it take to eat a bowl of cereal or two toasts and some juice/ milk? You can even eat it on your way to school or work. Making time for breakfast is making time to be healthy.

A PARENT’S PRAYER I pray that I may let my child live his / her own life and not the one I wish I had lived. Therefore, guard me against burdening him/her with doing what I failed to do. Help me to see my child’s missteps today in perspective against the long road he / she must travel – and grant me the grace to be patient with my child’s slow pace. Give me the wisdom to know when to smile at the small mischief of my child’s age –and when to show firmness against the impulses that he / she fears and cannot handle. Help me to hear the anguish in my child’s heart through the din of angry words or across the gulf of brooding silence. And having heard, grant me the ability to bridge the gap between us, with understanding. I pray that I may raise my voice more in joy at what my child is, than vexation at what my child is not, so that each day he / she may grow in sureness of him/her self. Help me regard my child with genuine affection so he / she will feel affection for others. Then give me the strength, Lord, to free my child so he / she can move strongly on his / her way. Not hungry: To get started, don’t eat anything after an early dinner. Eating breakfast will actually help you reach and maintain your healthy weight. Your appetite will be satisfied longer. You’ll be eating food when you can best burn the calories. You’ll feel great.

Mr. Rahul Vanvari, Parent of Rohit Vanvari (I Beta)

Don’t like traditional breakfast: You don’t have to eat traditional breakfast foods. Any healthy food is fine. Don’t like eating breakfast: Sorry, it can’t be helped. You’ve got to eat. Cash on Calories

One would then think what should a good breakfast be like???? A good breakfast is one that provides at least one third of the day’s calories. It is generally seen that individuals who consume up to 1/3 of their daily calories in the morning meal will eat less later on that day. The effects of a skipped breakfast are short attention span, lack of alertness, longer reaction time, low blood sugar; decreased work productivity etc.You wouldn’t try and drive an empty car to work, would you? So why drive an empty body? The sky’s the limit. The only limitation is your imagination. Make it a priority. Eat healthy breakfast. Starting your day with a good breakfast: • Boosts your energy • Increases your attention span • Heightens your sense of well-being. • You’ll be in better control of your emotions.

A Healthy Breakfast should consist of carbohydrate, protein and fibre. Example: 1. Any one cereal preparation which could be as simple as wheat flakes or oats meal with milk and a fruit. 2. Choose Whole Grain Bread. Have it with an egg made the way you like. If you’re a veggie, try scrambled tofu (soya paneer) or sliced cucumber and tomato with mint chutney. 3. A good example of a full healthy breakfast might be something simple like a hardboiled egg, an orange, and a bowl of whole grain cereal with low fat milk. 4. South Indian breakfasts like idly/dosa/poha/upma with sambar, a sliced banana or strawberries etc. 5. It may include simple low fat vegetable paratha along with a fruit and a cup of milk.

A Moment in Eternity

FROM THE COUNSELLOR'S DESK Demystifying Laziness How often do we tend to brand a child as being lazy? How often do we say that only if the child had taken more effort, he’d do better in his exams? A child’s poor academic performance could be due to many reasons like low intellectual ability, learning disabilities, social and environmental factors, emotional difficulties or lack of motivation. Very often children are labelled as lazy. We have to be wary of labelling any child as lazy or lacking motivation. If any of the other factors are eliminated then we can focus only on building motivation. There can be many reasons for a child to display lack of motivation. He may be afraid of failure, he may not enjoy the task at hand or feel it is irrelevant, his negative thinking may be an obstacle, or he may be overwhelmed by the process of setting goals. Below are some strategies that address these various issues, and help you to motivate your child to pursue his passions and goals. Help your child find his passion. If he seems to love music, get him the guitar he covets. There is nothing as motivating as passion. Passion can’t be manufactured. It has to be found through exploration. So encourage your child to explore what interests him. Teach problem solving. Help children adapt to changes and obstacles in their path. If you can link things such as doing well in school to pursuit of his passion, your child will become more motivated to do well. Your child will learn that sometimes he will have to do things he doesn’t particularly like in order to do what he wants later on. Address a fear of failure. If your child refuses to take risks, or explore new things, it may be because he has a pronounced fear of failure. Talk to the anxious child about his fear of failure. Some kids feel there is no room for failure because they feel that if they fail, they will lose respect, social status, or love. Achievement is being confused with the inherent value of a person. Let him know he is loved and valuable regardless of his achievements. Emphasize the value of exploration, rather than the end point. Set goals. Help your child to set goals to achieve what he wants. Encourage him to think of goals as guideposts. Teach your child how to break an overarching goal into smaller achievable goals to encourage his progress along the way. Look out for negative thinking. Negative thinking kills motivation and initiative. To spot negative thinking, listen for words such as always, never, no one and everyone. Some examples might be “No one will ever like me” (Why take the initiative to make friends then?) or “I always fail my math tests” (Why try then?). Discuss with your child why black and white statements like this are simply untrue. Teach them to reframe their thinking in a more accurate and positive light. Through these simple steps you can help your child achieve his potential and pursue his passions Ref: Cindy Jett, LICSW, Psychotherapist and Author

Hoping that fortune would favor us with a tiger sighting, we parked our vehicle behind a row of other gypsies which were also in search of the big cat. We waited and waited…………….and waited some more. I was in tiger country, Bandhavgarh NP (National Park), in Madhya Pradesh. Ultimately our patience paid off, as a huge, hefty tiger immerged from the forest cover, walked up right to our vehicle and momentarily crossed over to the other side. From the woods to the grassland. He strolled to the centre, gave us a cold stare and sat down to rest. Everyone’s eyes were glued on to this majestic creature, the Royal Bengal Tiger. This particular individual was named M2*. Unnoticingly, in the midst of the stardom M2 was seeking, appeared his sister M3 and crossed over to the meadow. The elegant walk was enough to make a dent in her brother’s viewership. All eyes changed their focus to the new attraction, who settled down merely 5 feet from me, beside our gypsy. And apparently, their big brother, M1, a hulk and another product of the Mirchahni School of superstardom, reached the well set stage. He relaxed opposite to his siblings. Evidently, I was caught between three adult tigers. *[For identification, these tigers are named M1, M2 & M3 on the first letter of the area where they live i.e. the ‘M’irchahni Area; within the park.] Using this rare opportunity, I leaned closer to the nearest tiger (M3) peeping through my camera’s viewfinder to get a close up, but I only received a slightly curious yet annoyed gaze from the feline. This brought a smile to my face, but little did I understand the seriousness behind the look until recently, when I read the newspaper which stated – ‘3 tigers captured & imprisoned in the zoo for killing 2 villagers in Bandhavgarh NP. This was same trio of M1, M2 and M3, who were termed as man eaters for killing 2 locals who ventured into their territory. These were the same creatures with whom I shared some intimate moments which I will never forget. [This is a true story and unfortunately these tigers are now enclosed behind bars in Bhopal zoo…. The villagers intruded their natural habitat and entered the protected forests, which is prohibited by law. Naturally, the tigers followed their instinct and confronted the humans. Undoubtedly, the incident ended with the 2 humans losing their lives.]

The Importance of Humor Laughter is the best medicine.

Head Girl Speaks True leadership is a quality many aspire to, but few truly obtain...because in order to become a leader one must first learn to follow with an open mind, with focus, and with purpose. Being an effective leader means choosing the right course of action, all the while remembering those who will be affected by your decisions. A true leader has the confidence to stand alone, the courage to make tough decisions, and the compassion to listen to the needs of others. A true leader is the one who does ordinary things in an extraordinary way. It’s nice to be important, but it’s more important to be nice. To me a Head Girl is someone who you look up to, someone you admire and someone you respect. And it’s a privilege to have been appointed as the Head Girl of INS. Firstly, I would like to thank Joshi madam, Geeta madam & all my teachers for having faith in me. It’s a very big responsibility assigned and I promise not to let anyone down. According to me, a good leader should have right attitude. As if we assume that A= 1, B=2 …Z=26…then, LEADERSHIP=12+5+1+4+5+18+19+8+9+16=97% ATTITUDE=1+20+20+9+20+21+4+5=100% Every problem has a solution only if we change our attitude. It is the ‘attitude’ towards life & work that makes our life 100%. So, with right attitude, I will try my best to maintain the dignity of my school. Leading a team is possible only when the team co operates. I appeal the office bearers to work with all their energy, passion and strength to achieve the goal of our school. Rutuja Bhujbal (X Alpha)

I remember the day last year, when I was very nervous in school. Since I was the monitor, I took the liberty to ask my teacher, “Sir, would you punish someone for something they didn’t do?” He said, “Of course not.” I was so relieved, I said, “Oh good, because I didn’t do my homework.” The whole class burst out laughing and my sir could not scold me for not doing my homework. This is the power of humor; it is so infectious that it spreads faster than any contagious disease. When we all laugh together, it binds us and increases our friendship. Humor is such a powerful medicine that can benefit the mind and body to make the complaints go away. It is not just medical science that is so much impressed with humor but even a great scientist like Albert Einstein said that, “Laughter is more important than knowledge.” It was another great scientist Copernicus who discovered that the world is round; but it was my friend Pintu who told us why. It was our usual geography class when my teacher asked us to give three reasons why the world is round. Pintu was quick to stand up and give the answer: “One, because my dad says so; two, because my mum says so; and three, now you say so!” All of us laughed and our sir didn’t know how to react! Humor is not just the oldest pleasant thing for mankind but also the longest lasting. That reminds me of the tricky question our English teacher asked us the other day, “Children, which is the longest word in English language?” I said, “SMILES”. Nobody knew why! My English teacher said, “Can’t you count the letters in the word ‘smiles’, it has only six letters.” I said, “But teacher, there is one mile between the first and last letter.” Tell me, didn’t you enjoy these little stories that u just read? I can guess from the smiles on your faces that u have. Those who don’t have the smile have probably not read it properly. Hope you all have enjoyed the matter written. Hope you felt relaxed and my say has brightened you up and made you feel stronger : these are exactly the health benefits of humor that I just demonstrated. Bhairavi Bakhle (VI- Delta)

Our family trip to Rajasthan

OLDER THE WISER Today’s generation has got wings! They just want to fly. Maybe it’s the technology, the time or the assets which inspire them to dream big, aspire bigger, and do the best. But, why are the parents seen as impediments in our way? Teens and their parents both face these tribulations. Most of us have a contradictory opinion with our elders when it comes to taking decisions. They always have to think different. This point of discrepancy is because they don’t understand us, we don’t understand them. At least we are not ready to. The outlook of teens has changed with technology and the wide range of choices available in the present have vast dissimilarity compared to those during their parent’s epoch.

We recently visited Rajasthan, a state of India, which is popularly known as the “Place of Rajput Warriors”, one of the most fascinating and cultural state of India. Rajasthan is also famous for its huge desert. Everywhere around Rajasthan we found distinct qualities of sculptural art that flourished in the palaces, temples, havelis, forts and royal halls, constructed at different times by the great rulers. On our 8 days trip to this historical state, we visited various charming destinations of Rajasthan such as Jaipur, Jodhpur, Bikaner, Jaisalmer, Udaipur, Ajmer-Pushkar etc. Some of the most interesting and exciting part of our entire trip were - Camel safari, spending a night in a tent and desert, folk dance and other events organized by local Rajasthani people. Playing in a desert was indeed a mind blowing experience.

I am thankful to have parents who understand me. They never force decisions upon me and neither do I. But when I am wrong in making some decision they are always around to help me. The freedom they give me is enough for me to enjoy and live to the fullest but within limits. I revere them for putting limits on my freedom as I feel it is necessary. We share a very hale and hearty liaison which is because we see each other’s world with one others point of view. I feel the only way to live up to their wishes and also our spirit is with communication. This helps to understand each other better. We must always remember that the older generation is much wiser as they have seen the world out there more than we have and they will always think of our betterment. My Best Friend

PEACE

Do you know who my best friend is ?

“I am a man of Peace

A rainbow spreads colour in the sky

I live in Peace

Colours, that never lie.

But I do not want Peace at any price

And a joy, inside you feels lighter,

He plays with me everyday. He sits with me, runs with me, Cycles along and sleeps with me too!

I do not want the Peace that you find in stone I do not want the Peace that you find in the grave

A light inside you feels brighter. A rainbow spreads many smiles

I know he loves me so much.

But I do want the Peace which:

He even comes with me to school.

You find embedded in the creations

I will give you a clue, he looks like me too.

Which are exposed to the whole world.

In such a blue sky

But which is protected from all harm by the power

You feel you will get up and fly.
