elcome to the third annual edition of Norfolk & Suffolk Biker. Our thanks go to the dealers that have advertised within it. Without their support, there would be no publication. Please support them as they have supported your local magazine.
It looks like being a terrific year for biking with a raft of new and exciting models hitting the showrooms late in 2016 and early this year. Motorcycle Live exhibited so many new models that buyers are spoiled for choice and the growth of adventure, naked and retro bikes appears set to continue whilst some exciting new models maintain the British love-affair with sports bikes. Get some test riding done! The casualty picture across our two counties show some signs of encouragement but much more needs to be done by both drivers and riders to reduce them further. The government supports the idea that motorcycles are a solution to the problem of congestion and parking but any significant increase in crashes threatens to derail that support. Please do what you can to keep yourselves and motorcycling safe for the future.
There are training options listed in the magazine that will be great fun and help you get the most out of your bike. Please give one of them a go if you haven’t already. Do please fill out the online survey, there are some great prizes waiting to be won including a pair of Hood jeans. Take care out there, have a fun and an enjoyable riding season.

HE DID IT! Phil Armes Update
P
hil Armes succeeded in his ambition to lay a ghost to rest, the one from the crash that ended his racing career in 1995 and confined him to a wheelchair. You may recall from Edition 1 of N&S Biker that former Manx GP winner and Formula 1 racer Phil wanted to complete a parade lap of the Manx in 2014 and then tackle the course where he crashed, the Dundrod circuit of the Ulster Grand Prix. After problems on the Isle of Man for consecutive years with, mechanical issues, the weather and the suspension not set right for his over-worked arms, we are delighted to report that he succeeded in his ambitions in 2016. He completed laps at both the Ulster and Manx, strapped onto his bike with only his arms to help him. An inspiration to us all. Congratulations Phil.

here can be few of us unaffected by prostate cancer. If not personally, then someone we know will be fighting it or have already died from this wretched disease. The DGR runs worldwide in 90 countries and in 2016 nearly 57,000 smartly dressed riders mounted their steeds to raise awareness of the disease and raise funds for prostate cancer research, in 2016 $3,669,292 (US). Founded in Sydney in 2012, when Mad Men’s Don Draper was photographed astride a classic bike wearing his finest suit. The first ride brought together 2,500 riders across 64 cities to combat the often-negative stereotype of bikers.
The ride was so successful that it was expanded to support a worthy cause and prostate cancer was the chosen recipient. Supported by Triumph Motorcycles, it is down to someone in the local area to organise a ride. The type of bike you can use is prescribed, it’s not open to just anything: Café Racers, Bobbers, Classics or ‘modern classics’, Flat Trackers, Scramblers and quirky undefinable two-wheeled machines. any bikes would make it unmanageable and become just another charity motorcycle run and that’s not the idea. The 2016 Norfolk DGR was organised by Rachel Verlander from Roadkill Customs at Cromer and went on a route to the classic car & bike rally in Reepham, ending on the promenade at Cromer. The numbers for that ride were strictly capped to keep it manageable but there is nothing to stop you from organising your own. All donations are securely made online. f you told someone down the pub that you were going to drop a boat engine into a motorcycle and race it in the top class of the sport, they would probably say you’d had enough to drink and it was time you went home. Back in the early 1970’s, “It was initially very fast but Newcombe designed and New Zealander Kim fragile but he developed it built his own frame but had significant obstacles Newcombe did just that. into a competitive racing in adapting the engine He was employed by bike with 85bhp” for a bike as a marine Berlin hydroplane engine engine has no gearbox, builder, Dieter Kőnig, in drives via a shaft and is cooled by a limitless the factory’s experimental department. Kőnig supply of cool water. was also working on a bike project using the 500cc disc valve flat 4 hydroplane engine. Two strokes suffer if the incoming air/fuel mixture gets too warm as it circulates through the crankcase on its way to the cylinder, absorbing heat as it goes. Newcombe overcame this problem by cooling the sump. It was initially very fast but fragile but he developed it into a competitive racing bike with 85bhp but an excellent power to weight ratio at just 250lbs. Newcombe finished 10th in his rookie GP season in 1972 but in 1973 he was consistently placed on the podium, winning the Yugoslavian GP and at one point holding the lead in the world 500cc championship. Near to the end of the season he was killed following a crash into a concrete wall at Stowe Corner, Silverstone

Clive Ling, who races the bike for Dennis, said “It has a long wheelbase so it’s very stable on fast corners. It is harder work on hairpins and slow corners to get it turned in and fired out”. “Power wise it’s not like a conventional peaky two stroke. It pulls hard from 6,000 rpm, it’s more like riding a four stroke. The problem is that the hot air coming through the radiator hits the carburettor and the power drops off. It’s ok on the straights but on the slower sections it can be a problem. The new air ducting built into channels in the tank has hugely improved things.”
where there was a ridge in the track. He wanted hay bales placed in front but the officials had refused his request. He finished 3rd in the championship nonetheless, ahead of Agostini and behind Phil Read with 2 races contested after his death. As a youth, Dennis Gaskins was so inspired by Newcombe’s exploits that 4 years ago he built a replica of this remarkable bike. Dennis fabricated and machined many of the parts himself. Kőnig stopped making their hydroplane engines in the late 1970’s but Czech firm Konny continue production to this day. The genius of the design is its simplicity. The flat 4 engine fires both adjacent pistons at the same time and the incoming charge is controlled by a rotary disc valve beneath the twin choke Weber carburettor. It is campaigned in the International Historic Racing organisation (IHRO) group 2 series. Dennis said “We are constantly experimenting with things like the airbox and silencer lengths but can get 80bhp out of it at 9,220rpm”.
The team won their first race of the 2016 season at Chimay in Belgium from pole and the second from being made to start in pit lane. I’ve seen the on- board video and it is awesome, what a machine! Asked how it compares to its chief rivals, the Italian Patons, Clive said “The Patons are very fast but once we can get it up into 6th gear, it will get past them on the straights.” Dennis has found that the pace of the bike has irritated the well-heeled Paton teams. He said “People were complaining that it wasn’t a genuine bike, the same people that are racing £70,000 replica Paton’s. They don’t like the bloke from a shed in Norfolk beating them. They do not like it up ‘em!”

ith many new bikes bristling with technology, it can be very refreshing to turn the clock back to a simpler time, a time when shocks came in pairs and you could see all of the engine. I have to admit to some bias, having owned a Cali 3 many years ago, but there is no denying that this is an excellent bike. If you are in the market for a no-frills no hassle commuter that will provide some weekend fun, this could be the bike for you. The tried and tested shaft drive gets rid of all of that faffing about with chain adjustment and the uncomplicated controls allow an easy natural ride. Within 5 minutes of being in the saddle
I felt totally at home, enjoying the unique power delivery of the Guzzi twin and the ever impressive handling, which is firm and predictable. There are a number of V7 variants, from the awesomely beautiful Cafe Racer to the funky Scrambler, the one I tried was the standard option, which is available in various colours. The black suits the style of this bike very well, it looks good from every angle. Moto Guzzi have expanded their range recently with a new 900cc engine, but I’m glad that they are still producing the lovely little V7. If you want something a bit different from the norm, this is certainly worth considering.

JOHN O’GROATS TO LANDS END ON A CCM 450
MOSTLY OFF ROAD! CARLA MCKENZIE
I
’d ridden a host of motorcycles in the UK, Europe and the USA, in all weathers, but I’d never done any trail riding and I’d set myself a daunting task: to ride from John O’Groats to Land’s End via as many green lanes as possible – a ‘JOGLE’ with a difference. I had five months of practice and training, most of it with local Wiltshire members of the Trail Riders Fellowship, during which I rode ten different trail bikes and suffered twenty-two crashes. It was hard!
Then, on July 6th 2015, I set off with four companions from the top of Scotland, on the adventure of a lifetime. It was a long and winding 1800 mile ride to Land’s End (about twice the mileage of the most direct route by road). My fellow riders were two members of my local TRF, Andrew Byatt and James Higgs, motorcycle journalist Paul Blezard, and Ben Clews of CCM Motorcycles. James, Andrew and I would complete the whole journey while Paul did the opening Scottish and closing West Country sections. The purpose of the challenge was to raise money for the Dougie Dalzell Memorial Trust

Wales due to the different laws. Many people said that it would be virtually impossible to get permission to ride trails in Scotland. Undeterred, I set about using my network of contacts, with which we made two great breakthroughs. One of Dougie Dalzell’s lance corporals heard of my plight, and through the Guards network we were able to gain access to some Scottish estates in the far north. The Right Honourable (DDMT) to fund Patrick Sinclair (better known as Patch), a trips for our wounded soldiers former London dispatch rider, also opened his to ride Route 66 on the back of Harleyestate gates, as well as Davidsons in the USA. Day One: John O’Groats to Evanton (near Dingwall) Day Two: Evanton Foyers (on Loch Ness) Day Three: Foyers to Murthly (north of Perth) Day Four: Murthly to Haltwhistle One of the many highlights of the trip through Scotland was day three, when we sought out the narrow entrance to General Wade’s 18th century military road through the Corrieyairack Pass, which runs between Fort Augustus and Laggan, one of the most incredible motorcycle journeys I have ever had the pleasure of completing. My lack of skills resulted in a couple of ‘offs’ on this trail – the standard of riding required to get up, over and through all the natural obstacles we encountered, without mishap, requires a long apprenticeship. The bruises were soon forgotten as the extraordinary views grabbed my attention.
There were some really tough challenges as we progressed from the Lake District down into Wales and then across the Severn and on into the West Country but after sixteen days and 1800 miles we finally arrived at Land’s End on July 22, having raised over £12,000 for the cause. The relief and feeling of complete elation is hard to convey in words, but I can say this: thirty-five years on from my first motorcycle training with the RAC/ACU, I am as passionate about all forms of motorcycles as I ever was, and am proud to have added some basic proficiency in trail riding to my advanced riding IAM certificates. I’ve still got plenty more to learn though! There is much more, in both words and pictures, about the training for, and the JOGLE journey itself, at www.jogler.wordpress.com

RIDE OFF ROAD IN THE EASTERN CENTRE PHIL ARMES

t may come as a bit of a surprise, but the off road motorcycle sport scene in East Anglia is one of the strongest in the UK. Over 130 events are held each year, covering Motocross, Enduro, Trials and Grasstrack, run under the national governing body, the AutoCycle Union (ACU), and organised by local clubs at venues throughout Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex. So, if you fancy getting down and dirty at the weekend then there is no excuse for not doing so! All disciplines have a variety of different standards, from absolute beginners right through to rounds of major national series including the Maxxis British Motocross Championship which attracts Grand Prix riders in full factory backed teams. The most popular, and probably the easiest to access is Trials which is something akin to gymnastics on a motorcycle! Held at small venues, there are classes for older, and more modern machinery, and most of the clubs offer entry level competition with beginners routes through the individual sections. If you prefer something with a bit more speed then motocross, enduro, and grasstrack offer the opportunity to get the pulse
racing just that little bit quicker. Participants range in age from 4 years old through to seventy plus, and there are specific events for youngsters on courses designed to cater for their size, and the smaller machinery. And it isn’t just about the competing. If you fancy getting involved with the sport, but not the cut and thrust of racing, then you might like to consider joining the ranks of the volunteers who run the events. There are a myriad of tasks to be undertaken to organise the meetings, from track preparation, trackside marshalling, and right through to technical inspection of the machinery which has to be checked to ensure it meets both safety and class specific regulations. There are approximately 25 clubs in the region so you won’t have to travel far to find one that caters for the type of off road activity that you fancy. Contact details for every club, and the disciplines they get involved with can be found on the Eastern Centre (ACU) website; www.easternacu.org

HONDA SP1 SPECIAL BUILT BY SMIFFY’S SUPERBIKES F. HOLLISTER
S
miffy’s Superbikes owner Ashley Smith was asked by a customer to build him a Honda SP1 special. It has a stock engine that has been tweaked by John Ewles at Track Electronics, and is now the most powerful stock SP1 engine John has ever seen. The bike is crammed full of top spec gear and looks stunning. Notable items are the incredible Japanese ‘Ladybird’ full HRC spec exhaust system that is pure artwork in metal. You can’t just simply buy these things, Ash’s customer had to be vetted before being granted permission to buy it. That’s what you call exclusive! The Ohlins FG322 forks took 4 months to source from the USA and are claimed to be from Colin Edwards spare WSB bike sold by a dealer that buys up ex
WSB & Moto GP bikes. The internals have been uprated by MCT at Stowmarket. French company Beringer’s nickel calipers bite onto Brembo racing discs running on Dymag UP7X magnesium alloy wheels. The 22 litre fuel tank is from Japanese artisan builder Beater who build for Moto GP teams. The spec list goes on and on, too much to list here. The fabulous paintwork is by Spraybay who paint for Honda, Ducati & Valmoto superbike teams. What is it like to ride though? Ash said “It’s very smooth for an SP1, John did a great job on the fuelling. The handling is unreal, it’s second to none. It feels like a 2016 superbike that was actually built in 2001. It’s brought a great bike bang up to date”. The owner took it to the TT in 2015 and the boss of Honda was bowled over by it. Hutchy was mightily impressed and Michael Dunlop wanted to ride it on the parade lap. Would you loan your bike to Michael Dunlop? He didn’t!

GETTING DOWN AND DIRTY WITH ADVENTURE BIKE TRAINING KARL ADLER

o you have an ‘Adventure’ bike? That large ground clearance is not there for speed bumps, the alloy belly pan is not there for embellishment and those semi-knobbly tyres are not for your daily off road excursion over 15 feet of gravel driveway! Why not use it for what was designed to do? A lack of previous experience is no barrier, there is a solution available on your doorstep so your excuses for not doing that trip are getting thinner and life is not a rehearsal! Kevin Hammond runs Adventure Bike Training on a farm at Syderstone, North Norfolk and has a long history of off road riding. Formerly senior instructor at BMW for Dakar race legend Si Pavey, he then became a tour leader for Globebusters Worldwide Motorcycle Expeditions, founded by Kevin & Julia Sanders
in 2002 and who now run their business from the same premises. Kevin Hammond was also one of the UK trio that won the International GS Trophy in South Africa in 2010 and has competed at expert level in Trials, Motocross and Enduro. Kevin has recreated many of the hazards that you might encounter on your adventures from rickety bridges to varying depths of ruts and water filled ditches. The courses can be tailored to rider’s individual needs including, if required, workshop time, maintenance sessions, mapping and GPS courses and pretty much anything that you might need for that trip of a lifetime. It might be information on tools, spares, consumables, changing tyres, how to prepare for the trip. Kevin has been there and done it, he will have the answers you require. Ladies only days are also available. The school has a stock of bikes from many manufacturers so there will be something for you to train on, take wheels out and so forth or you can train on your own bike. Life is not a rehearsal – Seize the moment. www.adventurebiketraining.co.uk

CHALLENGE Bespoke Training based around the rider’s needs Lings Director, Paul Barkshire, wanted two of their newest staff assessed and trained. Asked what they had gained from the session they said: Dan Egan (Lings, Lowestoft) “I was apprehensive but the whole session was conducted in a very relaxed, friendly manner. I’ve been riding for 9 years but the techniques we went through have opened my eyes to a different, safer way of riding without losing any of the fun. I have definitely noticed an improvement in my riding as a whole and urge anybody to do this. You are never too old or experienced to learn as I found out.”
Dan Egan
Jamie Curtis (Norfolk Triumph) “We can all fall into a mind-set of 'You can't teach an old dog new tricks. I’ve had 12 years of riding powerful sports bikes but I entered the session with an open mind and I noticed how smooth and effortless the cornering was and, after knowing what the instructor was looking for and why, the style was natural, it made perfect sense.” “It's a great experience that makes you think about your riding and keeping safe. Before taking part I thought I would be recommending the training to my younger customers but have since discussed it with numerous customers of all ages and experience levels. I truly believe anyone would benefit for taking part in the Hugger Training.”

WHAT’S HAPPENING AT
ORWELL MOTORCYCLES?
W
ell, January 1st 2017 has seen Euro 4 regulations come into force for new motorcycles.
Major changes for the new regulations include anti lock brakes (ABS) to be fitted as standard, revised diagnostic systems, side reflectors, fuel vapour capture canister, reduced engine emission levels. As a result many iconic motorcycles which achieved only Euro 3 compliance have now ceased production (including Suzuki’s flagship Hayabusa, Kawasaki’sW800 etc.). However, many new bikes have entered the market, or are due in the coming weeks / months. Among the newcomers in the middleweight sector are Kawasaki Ninja 650 and Z650 models. These have replaced the ever popular ER6 F and N models, and, as well as benefiting from Euro 4 compliance, also enjoy a reduced seat height and lower curb mass weight. They have proved very popular since their launch and, at the time of writing, have been Orwell Motorcycles best selling model for the new 17 registration plate number. Both bikes are easily restricted to meet A2 licence requirements. New Suzuki models for this year include the much awaited GSX-R1000R, expected in our showroom during May, and at the other end of the scale two new 125cc bikes, the GSX-R125 and GSX-S125 are expected September. We have a range of demonstration bikes available, please call for details.

Riding is dangerous, or so we keep being told. But, you don’t have to accept that! In truth, you can decide: The risks can all be brought under your control. Beyond Advanced has developed out of recognition that riders desperately want to become safer and more proficient in their riding, yet these desires are not being fully fulfilled. This rider development programme fills the gap. We have captured the essence of what it means to be an Expert rider. It’s all about the way the rider thinks. The programme will allow you to think in the same way. Imagine someone had lifted the required understanding from the minds of Expert riders and transplanted it to you. Far-fetched? But, that’s what this rider development programme does.

ood Motorcycle Jeans are manufactured in Attleborough and Leicester. Chris and Julie Easterford launched Hood jeans in 1998, selling direct to the public. In 2015 they introduced the more comfortable and cooler K-tech Para-aramid lining, covering from the waist down to the shins. Sales of K7 jeans increased by 70%. Para-aramid is, weight for weight, 5 x stronger than steel. Optional D30 knee and hip armour is held in place with Velcro rather than pockets. Chris said “We use a heavy grade denim that is very strong and abrasion resistant
A 16 year old pair of postcrash Hood Jeans
“We use a heavy grade denim that is very strong and abrasion resistant when new, until the fibres loosen up through wear and washing” when new, until the fibres loosen up through wear and washing.”He showed me one pair of jeans that had been down the road on the M25 at 70mph. There was hardly any damage to them. Chris showed me another pair “These are a 16 year old pair of heavily used jeans but the Kevlar has stood up perfectly even though the aged denim has torn.” “Bulky jeans are easy to get through the tests as fibre ‘filler’ layers add to the abrasion resistance on the test rollers but they are heavy and very hot for summer use. We sell around 3,000 pairs a year and only about 20 of them are heavy G8 Evo jeans. That tells you a lot about what people want.” The K7 jean is lined to the boot, the much more expensive and heavier G8 is lined to the bottom of the hem. As the shin area is fully protected by the boot it gives
no real advantage and makes it more difficult to make their free hem-length adjustment. “We will probably go full length with the Kevlar to comply with the new CE ratings when the standards are finally agreed. They are due in 2018 but still being debated” The D30 armour may be compulsory after 2018 to comply with the new regs. “I don’t believe the mass market will sustain £250 for Kevlar jeans so we are constantly looking at how we can offer the best value and quality product with the K7 jean starting at £122” One final question, “How did you arrive at the name ‘Hood’ for the company?” Chris smiled “We were really struggling with a name for the company so we named it after the villain in Thunderbirds!” Suddenly their previous range of ‘Kyrano’ jeans makes sense. www.hoodjeans.co.uk
DAINESE D-AIR TECHNOLOGY AT SEASTAR
S
eastar Superbikes are stockists of a wide range of Dainese motorcycle clothing including the D-Air safety suits for riders and pillions. Tests show that D-air Street reduced the impact forces transferred by 72% compared with traditional level 2 back protectors. The product inflates to protect the back, collar bones and chest. In over 1000 track incidents using D-Air product not one collar bone was broken. D-air is available as a gilet styled Street vest, or as part of a leather or textile jacket. The one piece racing suit (D-air racing) is designed around racing style crashes. D-air protects the rider’s back, collar bones and chest. In the most violent crashes, D-air deploys in 45 milliseconds. In the event of a skid, the sophisticated triggering algorithm can decide upon a longer triggering time.
The J kit operates independently of the vehicle and the M kit has to be integrated into the bike (preinstalled on the Ducati D-air models) that include a pair of three-axis accelerometers and a skid sensor. If you are unfortunate enough to be involved in a crash, this technology could make all the difference to the outcome, Guy Martin believes that he not still be with us were it not for his D-Air Race Suit. Why not pop in to Seastar where Julie Gibson will be pleased to show you the D-air products as well as the rest of the excellent conventional range of Dainese motorcycle clothing. You will also be able to see comprehensive ranges of RST, Wolf, Alpinestars, Held, Sidi, Shoei, Arai, Knox, Proskins and Kies. Whether it’s leather, textile or heated clothing you are after Seastar is bound to be able to cater for your needs.

f your hobby was golf rather than motorcycling, taking lessons would be a smarter move than a ‘self-teach’ method or even worse, listening to a mate who may or may not know what he/she is talking about. Good quality training is the best solution but if you decide it’s not for you, why not at least check out these Rider Skills Downloads. They will give you a chance to evaluate what you are currently doing and examine some alternatives.
What method are you using to work out the sharpness of a bend and the correct approach speed? Do you know the ideal line through the bends? The apex line is most definitely NOT the solution for the road. These downloads are not intended to lecture you but give you a handy reference to check what you are doing and perhaps consider doing things differently. THE POWER OF FACEBOOK
& THE FELLOWSHIP OF BIKERS
O
n 10th June last year, Seastar Superbikes were visited by two men, one of whom relieved them of a ZX10 demo bike from the forecourt. Captured on the security cameras, they could be seen looking over the Ducati’s parked outside before entering the showroom where one stole the keys from a desk in the salesman’s office. The thief went outside, found the bike and rode off on it without any motorcycle gear or a helmet. The full force of Facebook swung into action with Seastar’s many loyal followers sharing the information that was viewed by 21,500 people. Within 3 hours, as a direct result of Facebook, the bike had been located, not far away, apparently abandoned to be collected later. The Seastar staff recovered the bike. Company owner, Vince Vrinten, was extremely grateful and posted the following on the company website “To the biking community and all of you that partook through social media, it’s a huge thanks from me for the assistance in getting the bike back, especially
to Miles & Dan. Thanks guys, I’m truly humbled by the assistance.” Well, there you have it, the community of bikers pulling together. Whilst Facebook does contain a lot of mindless drivel, political ranting and keyboard warriors, it does illustrate the power that social media can have when there is something important to deal with. Well
done everyone, we look after each other. The accused was charged but jumped bail and is still sought at the time of publication.
