Farokh “Flamboyant” Engineer Charms TiE Houston Audience
Pramod Kulkarni HOUSTON: TiE Houston tossed a googly last Thursday night. Instead of the usual business entrepreneur as its keynote speaker, the business organization invited former Indian test cricket players Farokh Engineer to serve as its keynote speaker. TiE Houston President Ashok Rao had met Engineer during a recent visit to Manchester and invited him to visit Houston. Engineer, a member of Bombay’s Parsee community (classical music conductor Zubin Mehta is a cousin), had his cricket test debut as a wicketkeeper and batsman vs. England at Kanpur, Dec
1-6, 1961. Engineer had a “happy go lucky” attitude and with the Nawab of Pataudi, added a sense of style and confidence to an Indian team that was easily intimidated by the English, Farokh Engineer (left) auctions off a t-shirt signed by all the current Indian cricket team players for his charity organization to assist the street children in Mumbai. With his long side burns and collar up, Farokh (right) added style and confidence to the Indian test cricket team sorely lacking in both qualities.
