Carmelo’s Restaurant: Italian Cuisine Meets Youthful Exuberance
By Jacob David HOUSTON: The heart of Italian tradition is to stay forever young. This youthful exuberance is reflected in the warm, friendly smile and demeanor of Carmelo Mauro, owner of two restaurants, one on Memorial Drive and the other in Austin. With a deep, earthy Italian accent, he tells me how he began his life as a restaurateur. This restaurant, Carmelo’s, today is a reflection of his world wide experience, an expanded version of its former self, revealing deep inner rooms for private parties, with seating for 10 to 150 guests. Soft classics by Tony Bennett and
Frank Sinatra play in the background as the wait staff bustle about in the front restaurant space serving their patrons. The restaurant is laid out like an Italian village with terraced slopes, a simulation of Italian homes on wall cutouts with windows that light up at night, some turned off to suggest that people have gone to bed, Italian paintings and art work that represent other nations. There is the piazza - the town square reminiscent of where people often gather to converse, party, laugh, and get together to celebrate family events. continued on page
