South Asian Americans Eye the ‘American Dream’ with More Optimism than the U.S. General Public: MetLife Study Reveals
2010 MetLife Study of the American Dream Shows Strong Self-Reliance and Sound Financial Standing NEW YORK: While only 35% of all Americans expect their personal financial situation to improve in 2010 from 2009, more than half (57%) of South Asian Americans expect their personal situation to improve this year. South Asian Americans are also significantly less likely than Americans overall to believe that there is more risk to their family’s financial future than in the past (43% compared with 70% of all Americans). These results are reported nearly two years after the start of the economic
downturn. A similar number of South Asian Americans (35%) and Americans overall (34%) report that they have achieved the American dream. However, South Asian Americans who have not achieved the dream are much more optimistic than their peers about their possibilities of achieving it in their lifetime. Ninety percent of South Asian Americans believe that it is possible to achieve the American dream significantly more than the 70% of Americans overall who report
the same. “With good reason, South Asian Americans are more optimistic than the overall population about their personal financial situation,” notes John Derbick, Assistant Vice President, Global Brand and Marketing Services, MetLife. “The Study shows that more people in this group have a personal safety net in place, which appears to be an important prerequisite for achieving and sustaining the American dream.” Strong Personal Safety Nets
This optimism may stem from a strong sense of financial security among South Asian Americans. Nearly six in ten (59%) say they have an adequate personal safety net, compared with just 31% of Americans overall. A personal safety net is defined by those polled as a “cash cushion” with retirement savings as well as auto, health, home continued on page 26

and life insurance. Further, while almost half (47%) of Americans have credit card debt that they don’t pay off in full each month, less than one-third (30%) of South Asian Americans say the same. And, while many Americans still find themselves close to financial ruin should they lose their job – 45% could not take care of expenses for more than a month and 65% could not do so for more than three months – the concern is less for South Asian Americans. Twenty-eight percent of South Asian Americans report that they could not take care of expenses for more than a month, and 59% say they could not do so for more than three months. “Family Net” Emerges In addition, a significant number of Americans are helping their family members financially. Forty-seven percent of Americans overall and 48% of South Asian Americans say they have given money to a family member in the past year so they can pay their bills. At the same time, 35% of the general public and 32% of South Asians have had a family member give them money in the past year. Dream Defined in Financial Terms Though all Americans define the dream first and foremost as “financial security,” South Asian Americans are slightly more likely (26%) than the overall population (22%) to describe the dream in financial terms. They are also much more likely (63%) than the overall population (31%) to equate the dream with “a successful career.” South Asian Americans are also more likely than Americans overall to feel strong pressure to increase material possessions, despite a challenging economy. Six in ten (60%) South Asian Americans say that the pressure to buy more and better material possessions is greater than ever, more than double the number of Americans overall who report the same (29%). Over one-third (37%) of South Asian Americans say that achieving the American dream is about improving the quality of life by increasing personal possessions, versus 23% of Americans overall. And, 65% of South Asian Americans feel like the bar is constantly rising in terms of the basic necessities of life, versus 58% of all Americans. Like Most Americans, More Stress at Work While significantly more South
Asians equate the dream with a successful career, many are more concerned about job security than other Americans. Two thirds of employed South Asian Americans (66%) are concerned about losing their job in the next year as a result of the current economic environment, compared to 55% of the general population. Many of these respondents also say they have taken on more responsibility at work and are more stressed about performing all the tasks their job requires. Sixty-nine percent of employed South Asian Americans report taking on more responsibility, compared with 56% of the overall population, while 63% of South Asian Americans say they are more stressed at work, versus 52% of the general public. However, optimism still prevails. Of those who are unemployed, 78% (versus 55% Americans overall) say that they are optimistic about their future job prospects. Methodology From April 14 - 21, 2010 Strategy First Partners in conjunction with Penn Schoen Berland conducted 2,201 online surveys in the United States among the general population as part of The 2010 MetLife Study of the American Dream. Roughly half (52%) of the Study participants were Caucasian, 18% African American, 9% Hispanic and 19% Asian Americans (i.e., 199 Chinese Americans, 178 South Asian Americans and 42 from other Asian ethnicities). Note that findings for the general population as a whole are weighted based on age, gender, race, income, education, and region to reflect the latest U.S. Census demographics. NRI Scientist Builds First Implantable Artificial Kidney
SAN FRANCISCO: In what’s being hailed as a major scientific breakthrough, an Indian-origin researcher-led team claims to have created the world’s first implantable “artificial kidney”, no larger than a coffee cup. Shuvo Roy and colleagues at University of California have developed the artificial kidney which they say not only filters toxins out of bloodstream, but also uses human kidney cells to perform other vital functions like regulating blood pressure and producing vitamin D. The team has tested the new device on animals, and it now plans to test the same on humans. “Dialysis is not only time-consuming, but it’s also debilitating. Many patients don’t feel good, because it’s not doing all the functions of a normal, healthy kidney. “The new kidney doesn’t just filter toxins. It has metabolic functions and hormonal functions, and dialysis does not capture these abilities,” Roy recently told ‘Technology Review’ published by Massachusetts Institute of Technology. A prototype of the artificial kidney, unveiled recently, is a two-part system - half consists of a toxinremoving filter, in which thousands of silicon membranes are stacked together. Their nano-pores are so dense, and so precisely shaped, that they can filter very precisely using only the force of the body’s own blood pressure. Blood flows in through this filter, where the toxins, sugars, water, and salts are removed as a filtered solution. The clean blood and watery filtrate are both shunted into the other half of the system - a separate cartridge. Here, they flow over more silicon membranes, these ones coated with a single type of human kidney cell, which helps the device reabsorb some of the water, sugars, and salts, as well as produce vitamin D and help prevent blood pressure from sinking too low -- normal kidney functions that are not offered by dialysis, say the
scientists. The waste that’s not reabsorbed is shunted to a tube attached to the bladder and removed as waste in the urine - just like a normal kidney would do. Though the scientists have tested the implant in a dozen rats and a handful of pigs, they claim that can scale up the device’s S h u v o R o y, a n a s s o c i a t e efficiency to work ef- professor at University of fectively in humans. India, the Second Most Preferred Manufacturing Hub: Study New Delhi(Silicon India): Is India slowly emerging as the new preferred destination for global manufacturing? Well, the results of a study conducted by Deloitte and the U.S. Council on Competitiveness indicate so. According to the study, India stands second after China in manufacturing competitiveness and is likely to narrow the gap over the next few years. The Global Manufacturing Competitiveness Index is based on the views of more than 400 senior manufacturing executives worldwide. The index has
rated the overall manufacturing competitiveness of 26 countries. The study further said that it is the rich talent pool of scientists, researchers and engineers in India along with its well-educated Englishspeaking workforce and democratic regime that make the country a preferred and attractive destination for manufacturers. According to the executives surveyed, research and development capabilities paired with engineering, software, and technology integration abilities are the key to manufacturing enterprises. India has all capabilities
and global manufacturers can design, develop and manufacture innovative products in the country for sale in local as well as in global markets, said the study. The classic factors of production labour, materials and energy are the most important drivers of global manufacturing competitiveness, said the senior manufacturing leaders who participated in the study. While China and India are followed by South Korea as the third manufacturing destination, Brazil is projected to replace U.S. from the fourth slot.

Dravid, Kumble, Ganguly, and Gambhir Go in IPL Auction Pool MUMBAI (PTI): Stalwarts Anil Kumble, Rahul Dravid and Sourav Ganguly, as well as in-form opener Gautam Gambhir, were not retained by their franchises for 2011 and 2012 IPL seasons and will go into the players’ auction pool to be bought by
Rahul Dravid
Gautam Gambhir interested teams. Kumble, who led Royal Challengers Bangalore in the last two seasons of the T20 League, and Dravid have been set free for the January 8-9 auction by RCB who have kept only Virat Kohli, on the strength of his stupendous form for India in the ongoing ODI series against New Zealand. With the deadline for player retention ending on Wednesday, former India captain and Bengal icon Ganguly was also not retained by under-performing Shah Rukh Khan-owned Kokata Knight Riders. Only swashbuckling West Indian opener Chris Gayle has found favour with KKR’s owners, according to informed sources. The surprise decision is that of Delhi Daredevils not retaining Gambhir, who scored back-to-back ODI hundreds against the Kiwis, and continue his partnership with Virender Sehwag who is the lone player to be retained by the two-time semifinalists. The two franchises who played in last season’s IPL final - champions Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians - have retained their full quota of players. CSK, who also lifted last season’s Champions T20 League in SouthAfrica, have kept their faith in India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Suresh Raina, Murali Vijay and Proteas’ all rounder Albie Morkel. MI expectedly did not allow batting maestro and captain Sachin Tendulkar, feisty offie Harbhajan Singh, hard-
hitting West Indian batsman Kieron Pollard and Sri Lanka pacer Lasith Malinga to go into the auction pool. According to a spokesperson for Rajasthan Royals, who are fighting a legal battle against the BCCI for its decision to terminate its franchise agreement, leg spin legend Shane Warne and all rounder Shane Watson have been retained. King’s XI Punjab sought an extension of Wednesday’s deadline for signing up marquee players but the Bombay High Court refused to entertain their plea. IPL CEO Sundar Raman said that the T20 league can officially release a list of players who have been retained by their franchises only after midnight tonight as per the court order. As per the IPL Governing Council decision of September 5 each player retention would reduce the salary cap as follows: Up to 4 players per franchise may be signed for retention of which only up to 3 shall be Indian Players. The Player must have been included in the franchise’s registered squad for the 2010 Season. The Franchise and player must mutually agree to be retained and the player Fee to be paid by the franchise to the player for the 2011 and 2012 seasons. Irrespective of the actual player Fee to be paid to the player, the Salary Cap for the Franchise shall be charged $1.8 million per annum for retaining the first player, $1.3m pa for the second player, $0.9m pa for the third player and $ 0.5m pa for the fourth player. Thus if a franchise retains and signs four players, its salary cap will be charged by $4.5m in each of 2011 and 2012 seasons and it will have only $4.5m remaining to pay as player fees for the remainder of its registered squad.

Mind Your Body: Don’t Just Sit Around
By Rujuta Diwekar (Outlook): “I have no time to exercise, can I still lose weight?” It’s not about losing weight, it’s about getting fit and improving your body composition: more lean mass, less fat mass.... So the short answer to the above question is NO. Unless you invest time in exercising, as well as eating right, fitness will just be...a living-room conversation topic for you. But don’t lose hope if you don’t have time to exercise (which I don’t believe); the one thing you can do while you’re struggling to get that exercise routine going is cut down
on the amount of time you spend sitting. Sitting down for more than 30 minutes at a time is fast emerging as the single biggest factor influencing metabolic syndrome, the condition linked to a host of obesity-related diseases. Our lifestyles today are full of sitting down— to work, to eat, to watch TV, to have coffee, to travel on flights, to talk things out, on a romantic date... sit, sit, sit...we seem to do nothing else. And the longer we sit, the bigger our medical bills. That’s because sitting is changing not just the size of our pants, it’s also making many invisible changes in our
35
bodies, including our intracellular environment. Our hormones and enzymes seem to be at a loss about how to come to terms with how much time we spend sitting. The biggest toll that sitting around takes is on insulin sensitivity. The insulin in our bodies is finding it tougher to transport nutrients and glucose to cells without the support of bodily movement. Blood sugar stays high, the cells starve, the insulin feels overworked, the body cries out for help—and we keep sitting. So watch that clock, get up and walk around before the 30 minutes are up. And sign up for that gym class, now.
