Fund Raising Program of Sri Guruvayurappan Temple

Inspirational speech delivered by Swami Udit Chaitanyaji

HOUSTON: The third annual fund raising dinner reception of Sri Guruvayurappan Temple (SGT), Houston was held on Saturday, July 12, in the presence of several hundreds of Sri Krishna devotees. The temple officials received chief guest Swami Udit Chaitanyaji, special guest Dr. Arun Verma, president of Shri Sita Ram Foundation and Sankaran Namboothiri, renowned Carnatic Music artist from India.

by Kalamandalam Sreedevi and professional artist Divya Unni.

Swami Udit Chaitanya presented an enthralling spiritual speech to inspire the devotees to participate and contribute to temple activities. The public relations of SGT presented a video documentary on the history and the progress of the first traditional Sri Krishna temple in the western word, Sri Guruvayurappan Temple, Houston.

The evening was captivating by the mesmerizing voice of Sankaran Namboothiri who represents the new era of Carnatic music accompanied by violinist Mahesh Iyer and Mridangist, Shankar Ayyar. President Shanmughan welcomed the guests and updated the

progress of the temple construction. Trustee Board Chairman, Dr. Biju Pillai spoke about the unique temple architecture modelling the famous Guruvayur temple in Kerala, India and the importance of religious classes teaching Sanadhana dharma for the children and youth.

The hall was full with Sri Guruvayurappan devotees from various cities. The devotees enjoyed the music recital until the late night and continued to listen close to midnight. In addition, devotees extended their support of the temple and upcoming Prathishta ceremony in April 23, 2015 by many generous donations.

Secretary, Rupesh Aravidhakshan, Vice president, Rajagopala Pillai and FRC Chair, Sasidharan Nair updated the devotees on the temple construction progress. Treasurer Asokan Kesavan, program MC, Anil Aranmula and Event Director Sathyan Pillai updated the pledge amount and extended appreciation of the financial support of devotees. The program concluded with vote of thanks from Joint Secretary Gopalakrishnan Nair.

Parker Lauds Houston’s Religious Harmony at Mayor’s Annual Iftar Event

the Houston community. The iftar is dinner that Muslims eat at sunset to finish their day long fast.

Muslims around the world fast during the Islamic month of Ramadan, which this year is in the month of July.

The Houston Iftar with the Mayor of Houston was hosted jointly by the Sister City Associations of Abu Dhabi, Baku, Istanbul, and Karachi as well as the Islamic Society of Greater Houston and other collaborating organizations. Over the past decade, this event has become a great showcase of unity and recognition of the Muslims of Houston.

The elected officials in attendance included Congressman Al Green, Congresswoman Sheila Jackson-Lee, and the Pakistan Consul General Afzal Mahmood.

The masters of ceremony were Irfana Hussain and Shah Haleem.

The program began with the recitation of the Holy Qur’an, followed by a welcome address from Ruhi Ozgul, the chairman of the Houston Iftar organizing committee. Muhammad Saeed Sheikh, the coordinator of the iftar thanked the many generous sponsors and volunteers who made the dinner a success. Guests also learned about the significance of Ramadan from Islamic scholars Joe Bradford and Faraz Khan.

Houston Mayor Annise Parker lauded the city for its hardworking individuals and the harmony among the people of different religions and cultures, adding that this distinguished it from other cities in the US. She stressed the need for people of all faiths to come together to solve disputes so that innocent lives could be saved. Parker noted that Houston has expanded tremendously in the past decade and its population has increased enormously. However, she reiterated that it was the city’s commitment to ensure that each and every individual arriving in Houston got equal rights.

The Mayor thanked all Muslim organizations for helping arrange events like this, including ones that propagate Islamic teach-

ings. She recalled how the Muslim community had always showed unity during natural catastrophes.

She noted that the city had passed an ordinance providing its citizens protection from all sorts of discrimination. She pointed out that people of other religions were at the Iftar dinner and said it was a matter of pride for her to witness such a harmonious gathering. She wished Muslims all the best during the holy month of Ramadan and presented appreciation certificates to organizers of the Iftar dinner.

Parker also stressed that all people deserved equal respect and dignity despite color, creed or religion adding that children arriving from across the border were precious.

She condemned killing of people on the basis of belief adding that we needed to strive for peace during Ramadan. She said that society

beliefs and should be a model for Pakistan where people were being killed for their beliefs. He held that people in USA were prospering living peacefully, while those in Middle East (particularly in Iraq) were cutting each other’s throats.

“Women and children are being killed in Pakistan and Palestine”, he lamented.

Recitation of verses from the Holy Quran proceeded the Iftar dinner. Ruhi Ozgul’s address was followed by a vote of thanks by Masroor Javaid Khan. A Ramadan message by President Barack Obama was also read on the occasion. Saeed Sheikh welcomed the sponsors and guests. Joe Bradford talked about the importance of Ramadan while Faraz Khan spoke about the relationship between Allah and humans. Hashim Badat, President, Islamic Society of

Radha Madhav Dham Celebrates Jagannath Puri Style Rath Yatra

AUSTIN: Just a few weeks ago on June 29, more than a million devotees congregated at the holy city of Jagannath Puri in Odisha, India to participate in the annual Rath Yatra (festival of chariots). The Jagannath Rath Yatra is a huge Hindu festival in which the deities of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balbhadra and Subhadra are carried in a procession to the Gundicha temple, about a mile away, where they reside for nine days.

A similar festival is celebrated at Radha Madhav Dham in Austin, Texas, one of the largest Hindu temples in North America.

Every year, the presiding deity, Shree Raseshwari Radha Rani, is taken out in a grand chariot procession that is reminiscent of the Jagannath Rath Yatra. This year too, amid great devotional fanfare, on Sunday July 6, Shree Radha Rani was brought out in a beautifully decorated chariot to visit the holy places of Braj that are represented within the 200-acre picturesque grounds of the Ashram.

The excitement began early in the morning, as hundreds gathered all over the country to attend this festival. Both young and old, dressed up in colorful festive attire, joyously waited to welcome Radha Rani.

Gracefully seated on a pearl-white and gold chariot decorated with sparkling fabric, jewels and fresh flowers, Shree Radha Rani arrived amidst the exuberant sounds of drums, conches, cymbals and a shower of marigold flowers, as the sounds of “Radhey Radhey, Radhey” permeated the air.

Reminiscent of Radha Krishna’s descension on this earth planet 5,000 years ago, when Radha Rani would often ride in Her chariot, accompanied by many Gopis, and Shree Krishna would welcome and glorify

A few hours later, as the chariot started its return to the temple, one could tell from the soaring levels of excitement and the increasing sounds of drums and bells, that the Rath Yatra was reaching its climax. It was a sight worth capturing, as everyone danced in joyful exuberance, and the ashram grounds reverberated with the echoes of “Radhey Govind” and “Hari Bol.” Even the sun seemed to be joining the crowds, as it danced with the clouds, disappearing and then re-appearing in the skies.

Even though the Rath Yatra concluded at noon, the festivities inside the prayer hall continued with cultural programs and leela performances. This was followed by an eloquent talk by one of the senior preachers of the temple, Siddheshvari Devi Ji, who explained the Divinity of Shree Radha Rani’s s personality by quoting from the Vedas to explain that “Shree Radha Rani is the highest entity of all, because She is the one worshipped by the Lord of the Universe, Shree Krishna Himself.” She went on to further explain that while “both Shree Radha and Krishna are one – one soul, one intellect – they appear in two forms only to perform leela’s and distribute Divine love to all souls.”

The annual Rath Yatra gave many wonderful memories for participants who came from all over the country to participate in this huge event. “An experience of a lifetime”, were the words of many as they filed out of the prayer hall to enjoy the lunch mahaprasad. It was a day of devotional revelry, a day of intimate darshan, a day one had to witness to believe…

BY JAWAHAR MALHOTRA SUGAR LAND: By the time that Germany was whooping Brazil in the World Cup quarter finals, Subodh Bhuchar was burning up the bandwidth on Facebook in agony seeing the team so thoroughly demolished. He got the chatter started to get together for a World Cup Finals rendezvous and pretty soon there was a clamor from his friends circle that they wanted in.

Not a slouch for these kind of spontaneous get together, Bhuchar, who is one of the three hosts of the Open Forum radio show, started the ball moving, even if his favorite team was struggling, and organized a snack laden luncheon get together to catch the World Cup fever!

So, about thirty people showed up, some in shorts and sandals, kicked up their feet, enjoyed some cold beers and ate the sumptuous idli-sambar, dosa-sambar and buffet lunch that Madras Pavilion in Sugar Land is known for. If you walked around 2 pm on Sunday,

July 13, the speakers were on full blast in the banquet room and the screen was rolled down playing the match shown on ABC Channel 13.

Madras Pavilion owners Mahesh Shah and Rajan Radhakrishnan were good sports about the clamor, and tuned in the two televisions in the main restaurant to the same game. Their staff brought in hot food and cold drinks to the soccer fans and even lingered to catch the exciting points. Bhuchar and his Open Forum partner Dinesh Chedda cheerily declared that the food and drinks was on them, courtesy of their radio show.

There were groans when Lionel Messi of Argentina had three neargoals, just missing the German goal and panic as Germany kept attacking persistently. In the end, when the match went into double overtime, Bhuchar felt it would go into penalty kicks. But, in the 113th minute, out of nowhere, Germany’s last substitute player Mario Goetze just pumped the goal

in and finished off the match for a 1-0 lead and Bhuchar groaned in agony as his team lost the 2014 World Cup.

In those Moments He Still Treasures, a Driven Engineer Became Part of American History at Ellis Island

BY JAWAHAR MALHOTRA SUGAR LAND: It was a clear, sunny July 3rd day in 1986 with just a slight sea breeze along the shoreline of the New York City harbor, just the perfect weather for

The passage of time and the salty sea spray had taken a toll on the copper skin of the statue and two years earlier it had been closed down so that work could begin on restoring the icon of liberty to the original condition when French sculptor Frederic Auguste Bartholdi and structural engineer Alexandre Gustave Eiffel (designer of the Eiffel Tower) had designed and built it. Appeals were made for private donations to supplement federal funds for the restoration of the Statue of Liberty and the adjoining Ellis Island. With former Chrysler Chairman Lee Iacocca appointed

by President Ronald Reagan to spearhead the $87 million effort,

India was directing his career forward by designing and building large scale nuclear power plants for world-class firms like Brown and Root, Bechtel and Ebasco. His attention to detail and the strength of his vast experience had already earned him a solid reputation in his field.

But in his quest to make a mark for himself as a respected engineer and an entrepreneur, one detail had eluded Ram Avtar Gupta as he built a life for himself and his growing family in their new home in America. He was living in Houston and had submitted his application for naturalization in 1984, but for some reason it was rejected. Not one for being demure or taking such a thing lying down, Gupta took the matter straight to the top by writing, in 1985, to Senator Lloyd Bentsen who represented his district.

Headache Doctor Receives Third Lifetime Achievement Award

HOUSTON: Houston Neurologist, Dr. Ninan T. Mathew, received the 2014 Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Headache Society on June 27, at its 56th Annual Scientific Meeting in Los Angeles, California.

The American Headache Society (AHS) is a professional society of health care providers dedicated to the study and treatment of headache and face pain. Founded in 1959 during the annual meeting of the American Medical Association (AMA), AHS brings together physicians from various fields and specialties throughout the United States to share concepts and developments about headache and related conditions. Dr. Mathew is the fifth recipient of the AHS Lifetime Achievement Award in the organization’s 56-year history.

Dr. Ninan T. Mathew is a familiar name in the field of headache worldwide. In the early 1970s, Dr. Mathew got in on the ground floor to discover the reasons and treatments for people’s continuous headaches. He began his research at Baylor College of Medicine at a time when there were few studies on headache causes. In 1976, he established the Houston Headache Clinic, which was the first comprehensive headache specialty center in Texas and one of the few in the U.S. For over 40 years, Dr. Mathew has significantly contributed to scientific research with more than 200 publications and several books to his credit. His vast medical research and expertise has earned him a stel-

lar reputation with his colleagues. In 2012, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Texas Neurological Society and in 2013, he was the recipient of the Headache Cooperative of New England’s Lifetime Achievement Award. Early in his career, Dr. Mathew received several American Headache Society Awards, including the 1976 Harold G. Wolff Lecture Award and the 1994 John R. Graham Distinguished Clinician Award.

Dr. Mathew has served in various national and international neurological organizations and is a past president of the International Headache Society and the American Headache Society. He is a former chairman of the Headache Section for the American Academy of Neurology, which he helped to form. He has also served as the chairman of the American Council for Headache Education.

Dr. Mathew is one of the founding members of the international research group on cluster headache and was chairman of the Fifth International Headache Congress held in Washington, D.C., in 1991. In 1999, he chaired the Ninth International Headache Congress in Barcelona, Spain.

Dr. Mathew’s current medical practice is located at the Houston Headache and Neurological Institute near City Centre and Memorial City. He and his wife, Sushila Mathew, have resided in Bunker Hill Village in Memorial for 36 years.

SongKran Kitchen in Uptown Park: Thai for Those Who Live to Eat

BY PRAMOD KULKARNI HOUSTON: According to SongKran Thai Kitchen owner Jitten Karnani, the world is divided into two types of people: those who eat to live and those who live to eat.

I had counted myself among those who eat to live, with daal and chawal as my favorite meal and Thai a little too exotic.

When Houston’s serial entrepreneur Ashok Rao and his wife Sheela joined Karnani as co-owners, it was a priviledge to attend the restaurant’s open house in May with no special expectations about the cuisine.

After sampling Chef Junnajet (Jett) Hurapan’s Pia Sam Ros (crispy whole red snapper with three-flavor sauce) and Tow Hou Pad Prik (spicy wok fresh bean curd with three pepper and scallion), I was transformed to the other wordly category for those who live to eat.

Karnani and Hurrapan were earlier involved with the restaurant Blu in the Sugar Land Town Center.

While Chef Hurapan was restricted by the Blu menu to Asian fusion bar food, here at the SongKran, he had the opportunity to create a full fledged restaurant menu with an extensive array of appetizers, soup and salads, entrees, rice and pasta, side dishes and deserts.

The SongKran menu includes traditional Thai dishes such as green and red curries, satay and spring rolls, there are several Chef Hurapan special dishes mentioned earlier and including Kang Khew Waan (chicken with green curry and thai basil) and Kang Kari (yellow curry free range chicken and sweet-sour cucumber.

One of the most awesome presentations at SongKran is the red snapper. Chef Hurapan carves out the fish meat, and after cooking, stuffs it back into the fish frame that is bent in the form of a swimming fish.

To please all palettes, SongKran has special gluten-free and vegetarian dishes. The prices range from single-digit appetizers and

Texas Governor Mark White, nominating me to be a delegate from the state for the Statue of Liberty Centennial Celebration,” Gupta remembered with a smile.

So, when he received an official invitation from White’s office to be part of the celebration, Gupta was taken aback and completely surprised, as he was the only Indian nominated out of the 51 to attend the Ellis Island Citizenship swearing-in ceremony on July 3, 1986. Each state sent at least two candidates and Gupta was one of two from Texas, but the only Indian.

It was just another in the list of firsts that Gupta had accumulated in his career as an engineer after he left his native town in pursuit of a civil engineering degree at Aligarh Muslim University, receiving it in 1958.

He worked for a few years in India and one of his designs for a six-story building on a slope for the Yamuna River Hydroelectric project in Dehra Dun was featured in “The Engineer” magazine in Calcutta.

The urge for furthering his education led him to Purdue University, Indiana to complete a Masters in structural engineering, which he received in 1966. But the large sum of money - $2,000, or about Rs 10,000 then - his father had to pull together to fund his US studies always gnawed at him and he swore to repay him as soon as he could.

Impressed by his straight “A’s” in his first semester, Purdue especially created the position of Graduate Instructor for him, which paid him twice as much as a research assistant, and Gupta eagerly repaid his father within a year.

After he graduated, he taught as an Assistant Professor at Purdue for three years, but then left when he got a better job as a professional engineer. After a short time in India where he started, and later closed, a computer logic teaching business, Gupta worked in Nigeria as one of the highest paid Chief Engineers in the country before returning to the US to work with several multi-national engineering companies.

So, when his citizenship application was rejected, Gupta relied on the perseverance he had learnt in his career to challenge the decision. He didn’t expect that this would lead him to be in the front row, seated next to the renowned ballet dancer Mikhail Baryshinikov, and be a part of the Centennial Celebration of the Statue of Liberty, an event that lasted three days in New York and was televised by two major national television networks.

“It is a moment that I will never forget,” he said recollecting that time. “I was proud to represent my Motherland, India, from Texas as I became a US citizen, being introduced

by US Attorney General Edwin Meese and receiving the swearing-in oath from US Supreme Court Justice Warren Burger.” In attendance were 36 other elected federal officials, including Senators Daniel Moynihan and Alfonse D’Amato, with some making speeches.

A year later, Gupta left Ebasco to work as the Director of Facilities Management at Victoria Memorial Hospital in Brooklyn, New York. In 1996, he moved to Houston to be close to his wife Vijaya and kids Parag and Juhi (who is now married to Anurag Gulati and has two children, Aaryan and

Jayan) who were in the University of Houston, and he worked for a decade with Walter P. Moore Associates, a well-regarded consulting structural engineering company.

Since then, Gupta has been with Pacific Architects & Engineers, a vendor to NASA in Clear Lake as a senior engineer in their Facilities Management Group.

Gupta is proud that in his career he has written technical papers and a book and even participated with a retired Supreme Court Justice of India to upgrade the Research and Development activities of India’s Council of Scientific and Industrial Research. He has worked with the Electronic Commission of India to accelerate the production of computers in the country. And in the US, he has worked with the NCEES to improve the structural engineering exam papers for the PE license.

But, it was those rarified moments that he remembers often: sitting in the shadow of the newly renovated Statue of Liberty towering above the new Americans, the elation over its rededication and the history of the century-long that it has gazed as a beacon of hope to immigrants coming to America, which defines the mark that Gupta made in American history.

NEW DELHI: With US tech visas getting more difficult for Indians, Canada is the new destination. For Indian techie entrepreneurs and even venture capitalists, Canada is making it easier to make it their home.

Canada’s immigration minister Chris Alexander told in a conversation, “We are telling all brilliant young technology minds, ‘if you can get Canadian venture capital, or an angel investor to back you with funds or just with their time, we offer you permanent residence.’ No one else in the world does that. It’s a pilot project and we already have a couple of hundred applications in process.”On the other hand, if you are an investor yourself, the path to permanent residency in Canada is easier. “If an Indian wants to buy a Canadian company, he is most welcome. If they are there as the manager or the principal for a year they can apply to be a permanent resident,” Alexander said.

Amazon, Facebook and Microsoft are among a host of tech companies which have set up campuses in Vancouver to take advantage of easier immigration and visa rules that make Canada more attractive to immigrants from countries like India. According to reports, foreign workers do get paid around 10 per cent less than locals.

But Alexander was clear the popular reaction is positive. “We are an immigration country.

We have built our success on immigration and we have protected that legacy through the economic crisis of 2008-09. We are still a growth play, whether in the technology and resource sectors or finance.”

For many reasons - English education and skills - Indians score high in the acceptability chart. “We have three countries that are in a league of their own as sources of immigration - China, India and the Philippines.”

In 2013, over 33,000 Indian immigrants came to Canada, Alexander said. Around 60 per cent were economic migrants, rest were families.

Alexander is clear that unlike the US, Canada has had a more positive evolution of its immigration systems. “We have reformed, we have evolved.”It is far easier to get permanent residence in Canada. Alexander said, “It only requires you to be in Canada for two years out of five. So someone who is global and wants to go back and forth can do tha- be a Canadian permanent resident while doing some part of business here (in India).”

Recently, Canada stopped an immigration programme which enabled rich Chinese to “buy” permanent residency with a “soft loan” of $800000 to a district or province in that country after media reported protests from locals. “It was a programme that was not meeting its objectives. It was called the immigrant investor programme but it brought us neither immigrants, nor investors.”Alexander said there were a lot of people who were trying to make it seem as if they were living in Canada, when in fact they were not. “We had absentees making soft loans to the provinces rather than immigrants.”

Canada now wants to replace it with a new pilot programme. “We will require (potential immigrants) to make a larger investment, a real investment in the venture capital field.” The programme is expected to be rolled out later this year.Alexander kicked off a new visa processing programme for Indian visitors- under the new CAN+ programme, Indian nationals who have travelled to Canada or the US in the past 10 years can go through faster processing of visas.

EB-5 Alternatives: E and L Visas

BY MELISSA N. SALVADOR HOUSTON: So many have heard about the EB-5 program – invest $1M (or $500K) and you get a Green Card. At least that’s the short of it.

The E and L visa classifications, on the contrary, are much more affordable options.

The E visa is for treaty traders and treaty investors, and it is used by many foreign nationals with an entrepreneurial spirit. The E visa allows a foreign national to come to the United States to work and live so long as they are a citizen of a country that has a Treaty of Commerce and Navigation (“TCN”) with the United States, and they are coming to carry on substantial trade or to develop and direct the operations of an enterprise in which he or she has invested in the U.S. The spouse of the principal beneficiary of the E visa is permitted to obtain employment authorization to work for any company in the U.S., and unmarried children under 21 have the opportunity to attend any U.S. school. Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka have TCNs with

the United States. India, on the other hand, does not.

Indians, however, can still come to the U.S. to develop and direct the operations of an enterprise, but through the use of the L visa. The L visa is a non-immigrant classification whereby companies may transfer employees working abroad to function in the same or similar capacity for the parent, subsidiary, branch, or affiliate company here in the U.S. It also allows foreign nationals to establish new offices in America.

So long as there is a business currently operating in India, it can be expanded into the U.S. by establishing and carrying on its operations under a U.S. company that is associated with the foreign enterprise. Therefore, like E visa holders, Indians can work and live in America even though a TCN doesn’t exist between the two countries. And much like E visa holders, the spouse of the principal beneficiary in L status can obtain unrestricted work authorization in the U.S.

Both the E and L visa classifications can be nice alternatives to the H-1B especially in a season when the allotment of annual visa numbers is unavailable.

For the last two days the national television channels of Denmark have been telling a story about 11 Indian boys missing from a team of handball players. They had arrived in Denmark to play, but then all of sudden they disappeared into the dark. According to media reports, some of them were later found in the Sikh Gurudwara in Copenhagen, and a few others in front of the railway station. Five of those 11 are still missing.

It is too early to establish the exact reason for these boys’ disappearance, but very often we hear such stories, creating difficulties for people who genuinely desire to stick to their goal of visiting Western countries for a brief period. Many of these people desperately seek asylum, hoping to get enough time to disappear into one of the European countries. These stories are far too frequent and far too obvious.

I have met innumerable sad examples of people who have borrowed lakhs of rupees to travel to the West, given immense amounts of money borrowed or sweated and saved by their parents and grandparents. This money brings these boys to the shores of Western countries like Italy, Spain, Portugal, etc., and then they pay huge amounts to change their fake papers into real living permissions. This takes years and for some decades. All this while their families and children are starving to see them. The families back in India hardly know that their father or their son is living a hand-to-mouth existence, sometimes illegally trying to make ends meet.

The media in India need to tell the straight truth here. If one is willing to pay Rs. 20 lakhs to come to Europe to wash toilets and clean dishes, then what is wrong with staying in India and taking a decent job or helping your father or grandfather in establishing a good business?

How many lives of young people have to be lost in the El Dorado dreams which are impossible to achieve these days?

I have met so many young men who have recently come to Scandinavian countries like Denmark and Sweden and get one-tenth of the normal wage for the same work because they are so desperate to get work.

Some of them sell their identity papers in desperation to make enough money to finally return home. It is the responsibility of the media in India to narrate, inform and tell people that after the economic crisis the unemployment rate among young Spanish people equals 50%. Indians returning from abroad have to honestly tell the true stories of their lives.

Instead of showcasing the expensive goods that they buy for the whole family, they should start telling them about the true struggles of life.

Some succeed but many fail, and instead of being ashamed, we have to tell the facts so that we do not help youngsters build castles in the air. The grass may not always be greener on the other side of the fence.

EDITORIAL/COMMENTARY Sharapova: “Sachin ... Who?”

BY ANAND SOONDAS There is this fabulous boxer called Manny Pacquiao. He is a Filipino. I wonder if Saina Nehwal will be able to recognize him.

Why am I asking this? When Maria Sharapova, an icon in her native Russia for her tennis, could not recall who Sachin Tendulkar was it triggered a furore in social media by Indians who felt hurt and angry at the “disrespect”.

Would truckloads of people in the Philippines react similarly if our own badminton star failed to acknowledge the great Manny? I doubt.

Manny is big in his country. They call him ‘The Nation’s Fist’, loving him for not only turning out to be one of the finest, most exciting boxers the world has seen in recent times – he was long regarded as the best poundfor-pound slugger in the planet by a host of experts – but also for being a man of many talents, a politician who occasionally sings and acts.

So what does the completely unnecessary and cringe-worthy SachinSharapova incident tell the world about Indians? Quite a few things.

For one, our online crowd is boorish, obnoxious, with a sense of self importance that is utterly embarrassing. And as if that wasn’t bad enough, the English is as bad as the language that is used to curse, berate, vilify, bully and bombard dissenters and non-conformists. Often, one is in for some serious abuse merely for not toeing a majoritarian point of view.

Try saying gays should not be persecuted and the courts are wrong in criminalizing same-gender sex. In all likelihood, you’ll be pilloried for it.

The manner in which we react to any Sachin-baiting is to a large extent a factor of our utter lack of sporting heroes. In a country that doesn’t like playing any sport – and which has a deep disdain and fear especially of contact sports (our idea of fun, unlike in the west or even large parts of Asia, is eating samosas and namkeen in front of the TV on weekends) – cricket has convincingly overshadowed everything else. We have lost our hockey prowess, we languish at the bottom of the FIFA heap as far as football is concerned (at number 147 in the world!), and aren’t good at much else, whether it is tennis,

volleyball, basketball, wrestling or shooting. No wonder a nation of 1.2 billion erupts in collective ecstasy when an entire Olympic squad returns with one gold medal.

All our stars, superstars and sporting gods, like Sachin, are therefore from the world of cricket. Because that’s all we have. That’s where all our sporting pride is concentrated. Of course, it seems to be working beautifully for our politicians, administrators, advertisers, money bags who can invest in sports, and for showbiz that can talk about and romanticize it.

And why not. The numbers are compelling. The Economist says that as many as 400 million Indians will watch the national cricket team during a high stakes game. The IPL’s brand value is pegged at $ 3 billion. “In contrast, around 6m Indians watched the final of the (football) World Cup in 2010, held in South Africa. The average crowd for India’s top professional football league, the I-League, is around 4,000 and most of its teams face financial hardship.”

Every once is a while you’ll get to hear horror stories about the way our non-cricketing sportspersons are treated – washing dishes after their coaches have entertained their guests, running errands for them, and sometimes subjecting themselves to physical and verbal abuse. Not so the cricketers. Virat Kohli gets to date Anushka Sharma and do shampoo ads on TV. One more thing. Indians need to stop taking themselves with such

severe solemnity. It’s OK, really, if the world doesn’t grovel before our one and only champion, doesn’t worship our many gods, can’t place us on the map or jokes about our compulsive need to litter, bargain and break traffic laws. We can’t keep protesting at the slightest hint of criticism. Such petulance is the mark not of a great nation but of a country that thinks, long after the white man unshackled us and left our shores, that it is still the underdog. It’s time, folks, to swallow a chill pill. ToI.

What to Do (or Not Do) after Genetic Testing

Hereditary risk of cancer, genetic testing, and personalized medicine are terms that are now often heard in the media. Much research is being conducted to identify how and why certain individuals may

have a higher risk of developing cancer or reacting differently to treatment. Genetic testing and subsequent counseling play an important role in this process. As part of our three-part introductory

series on cancer prevention, Dr. Meghana Bhandari, a medical oncologist in Sugar Land, discusses pertinent aspects on this topic.

BY DR. MEGHANA BHANDARI While the majority of cancer happens by chance, scientists have found that some cancer risks are inherited or are caused by a genetic change. If a certain kind of cancer appears to “run in a family,” it could indicate a possible hereditary link. Genetic testing can discern if there’s a genetic connection for certain cancers.

But what happens after testing?

Genetic testing is a tool that looks for changes in DNA to help determine if you are at high risk for certain cancer types. It allows those with a significant personal and family history of cancer to take steps for cancer prevention or early detection.

Genetic testing can help you make informed medical and lifestyle decisions, and provide useful information for other family members. State and federal laws protect patient privacy and prohibit health insurance discrimination based on genetic information. Still, it is not for everyone, and it’s important for counseling, both before and after, to accompany testing.

A medical professional with specialized training evaluates family history to determine if a hereditary cancer is suspected and what testing would be useful. Texas Oncology’s Genetic Risk Evaluation and Testing Program can help determine if you should be tested and provide counseling to help

you make an informed decision.

If your family history suggests a higher risk, genetic testing may be right for you. What you will do with the test results is also an important consideration. Each patient is unique, but options include: If results are negative (no genetic change is found), your healthcare provider will review your personal and family history with you to discuss your cancer risks and determine the best personalized screening schedule.

If results are positive (a genetic change linked to cancer risk is found), you may have several choices which vary based on the type of genetic mutation for which you test positive. These choices often include heightened surveillance, chemoprevention, and prophylactic surgery. Your healthcare provider will discuss what your test results mean for your relatives, as they may also be at increased risk and need testing.

Heightened surveillance means that you receive screenings more frequently and/or starting at a younger age than usual, or have a different kind of screening, for the type of cancer for which you have high risk. Heightened screening schedules can help detect cancer in the earliest stages, when it is most treatable. Not every type of cancer has a widely-used screening method, but many most common cancers do,

and doctors are constantly investigating new screening methods.

Chemoprevention uses medication to help reduce risk of cancer. Medications already used in cancer treatments and new medications are being developed and tested for use as prevention tools. Chemoprevention cannot prevent cancer with 100 percent certainty, but it can lower risks for certain types of cancer.

Delhi to be Second Most Populous City Till 2030: UN Delhi, currently the world’s second most populous city after Tokyo, is expected to retain the spot till at least 2030, according to a UN report.

According to the Population Division of the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs, Delhi’s

population -- presently pegged at 25 million by the UN report -- is projected to reach 36 million by 2030.

Still Tokyo will remain at the top.

Shanghai with 23 million inhabitants retains the third spot. Mexico City, Mumbai and Sao Paolo, each with 21 million inhabitants, followed

by Osaka with just over 20 million people have found place in the top

Hyderabadi Haleem

Hyderabadi Haleem became the first non-vegetarian Indian cuisine to be granted Geographical Indication status by Indian GIS registry office in Chennai in recognition to its cultural significance. It is a stew composed of meat, lentils, and pounded wheat that is cooked at low flame of firewood for up to 12 hours. Its preparation has become sort of like an art form. Kashmiri pashmina got its GI cover in September of 2008 acceding to the longstanding demands of pashmina weavers of patenting it. Pashmina is the highest quality cashmere wool and many kinds of textiles products are made from it, the most famous of them being pashmina shawls. The wool comes from pashmina goat that is a special breed of goat indigenous to high altitudes of the Himalayas in Nepal, North India and Pakistan. This wool has a special luster due to its long fine fibers, which are as thin as 12 micros, comparing it to human hair which is 200 microns. Pashmina accessories range from scarfs and shawls to saris. Impressively soft and light, the Pashmina shawls offer incomparable warmth.

Thanjavur Painting originated in 16th century in Tamil Nadu. These paintings have been given GI patent by Indian Patent Office. Traditional yet contemporary, these paintings are known for their vivid colors, miniature painting, surface richness and compact composition. In recent times, these paintings have become souvenirs of festive occasions, pieces to decorate walls and collectors’ items for art lovers. The subjects of almost all painting are Hindu gods, goddesses, and saints that occupy the central section of the painting inside beautifully decorated arches or curtains. These paintings come in three finishes namely classic, antique and embossed. High quality gold foils are used to ensure longevity. Tirupati Laddu or otherwise known as Srivari laddu is the world famous prasadam offered at Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam. Tirupati Laddu is copyrighted and received its Geographical Indicator patent in September of 2009.

The temple now solely owns the rights to prepare and distribute the sweetmeat deterring others from naming and marketing it under the same name. This laddu came into being in the 1920s, but some temple priests argue that it has existed since the 17th century. Tirupati laddu is synonymous with Tirupati and it is the customary duty of the devotees to return home with laddu, distributing it among family and friends. When Tirupati Laddu received its GI tag from Indian Patent Office, it led to a plenty of controversy and a couple of Public Interest Litigations were filed in Supreme Court and some High Courts seeking withdrawal of GI tag to the Laddu. It was argued that the GI patent of the laddu paved way for enhanced commercialization of faith.

Movie Review: Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhaniya

BY SARIT RAY It’s like there’s a fantastical Dharma Productions machine where you put in your ingredients — a slab of family drama, a heavy dose of Punjab, an

NRI boy, a handful of songs — set the mode to ‘rom-com’, and, voilà, you have another Karan Johar movie.

Humpty Sharma ki Dulhania is the latest from that producer’s film

factory.

It is a conscious ode to Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. Debutant writerdirector Shashank Khaitan makes enough bluntly obvious references to ensure that you know this — from the title, to scenes on TV sets in the film, to a hero who mouths lines straight out of that script.

HSKD opens with a song. In signature Johar style, the accompanying shots work to quickly introduce the titular Humpty Sharma (Varun Dhawan) and the dulhania, Kavya (Alia Bhatt). He is the clichéd mischievousbut-kind-hearted boy, who meets and falls in love with the girl from Ambala who’s come to Delhi with a one-point agenda — to buy an exorbitant lehenga for her upcoming wedding.

Their brief is to play hero and heroine rather than characters with distinctive traits, so they look good, dance well, flaunt a fair degree of coolth, and have a soft breeze ruffle their hair each time they face the camera.

That said, both Varun and Alia play the generic Bollywood hero and heroine to good effect. Anyone who’s seen Highway knows Alia can act.

That role was a lot more demanding.

Now back in the rosy Johar universe (after Student of the Year), she holds her own.

In one scene inside a gurdwara, with no dialogue, she manages to

convey a range of emotions. Varun, for his part, can dance (a prerequisite for the genre), be funny, and cry convincingly enough to serve as a gen-next replacement for SRK. The story and characters are, predictably, riddled with clichés. Girls agree to arranged marriages to NRI boys only to have a change of heart later; the boy relentlessly pursues a girl who’s already engaged, but is too morally upright to run away with her.

Reality remains a bad word in Johar’s universe. So Kavya goes beerdrinking in a shuttered shop with three boys she’s only just met (in Delhi, no less), and flirts with Humpty while cheerfully participating in wedding preparations. Yet another tasteless gay joke (on the lines of Dostana and Kal Ho Naa Ho, both Dharma productions) finds its way in, before the film finally gets its logic-less but predictable conclusion.

But then Johar doesn’t rely on novelty to make his films work. He relies on star appeal. An entire generation of movie-goers wanted to dress, talk and spread their arms out like Shah Rukh Khan. This time, he’s done it with actors he launched himself. And we suspect a new generation of collegegoers already want to sing and dance like them -Hindustan Times

Kangana Ranaut’s Back from US Film School

BY JIGAR SHAH Kangana Ranaut, who had taken a break from films in January this year to pursue a film-making and screenplay-writing course at the New York Film Academy, is done with her education and has returned back to India.

We have been told that before leaving for Mumbai, Kangana took all her batchmates and professors for a dinner. “That was her way of expressing gratitude to her friends and teachers, who helped her during the course,” says a source close to the actor.

Apparently, Kangana’s professors appreciated her for her dedication.

“She was surprised when she was praised for her hard work. Post the dinner, the director of the course presented her the course completion certificate,” adds the source.

Sharing her experience, Kangana says, “Going to a film school was like a dream come true and my class clapped for my final presentation.”

About 25 years ago, small, oneinch round soybean wadiyan (dumplings) began showing up in the spice and grocery stores in North India and since then they have become available everywhere. Now soybean flour is easily available, even in the US, and people are more aware of the protein benefits of soybean and the wadiyan which are used in cooking vegetarian dishes.

2 tbsp soyabean atta (soybean flour) - makes two 6 inch omelettes 1tbsp palak (spinach) – finely chopped ½ cup pani (water) 1 tbsp tael (olive oil or vegetable oil) Spices: pinch haldi (turmeric) for color, lal mirch (red pepper) and namak (salt) to taste.

Directions: 1. Pick some fresh spinach leaves, wash thoroughly and then chop finely. If fresh spinach is not available, take a little of the frozen kind and blend in a mixer, but do not puree it.

2. Mix the soybean flour and spinach together in a bowl, adding the water slowly to avoid making lumps. Throw in the spices and stir well. Keep the mixture to the side.

3. Coat a skillet with the oil in over medium high heat and then pour in a ¼ of the mixture; once it shows small bubbles, turn it over. Cook both sides till they are light brown and place in a plate. Repeat till t mixture is finished.

Shakuntla Malhotra is a skilled cook of Punjabi dishes made in the old-fashioned style that she learnt as a young woman in her ancestral home in Lyallpur, India before it became part of Pakistan after the Partition in 1947. People have often admired her cooking for its simplicity and taste that comes with each mouthful. MAMA’S TIP OF THE WEEK USE HALDI AS AN ANTISEPTIC FOR WOUNDS OR ILLNESSES The main spice that gives Indian food its distinct yellow coloring is haldi (turmeric) but too much of it can cause the food to taste burnt and inedible. But turmeric also is also used for its healing qualities in rural India and in cities as a first aid for minor scrapes, burns, infections and insect bites. For all those symptoms, just take a small amount of oil in a steel kohli (bowl) or a large steel spoon, heat it well over and then add ¼ teaspoon of haldi. Mix well, then use a cotton ball to dab the affected area.

The mixture becomes like tincture-iodine, an excellent antiseptic. Just beware that it leaves a yellow stain that takes a few days to disappear. If you have a cough or some other soreness or mild internal infection, warm 1 teaspoon of haldi in warm milk and drink it down for a week. The taste takes some getting used to, but this treatment has been used for years.

Hope and Hype: PM Modi’s ‘Thank You Voter’ Budget a Victim of His Own Success

BY KRITTIVAS MUKHERJEE NEW DELHI (HT): The new government has delivered its first budget studded with tax breaks, bold structural reforms and tighter spending. In an ideal world that would be hailed as a dream budget, considering the current weakness in the national economy.

Yet, so high are the expectations from Prime Minister Narendra Modi that the budget has failed to generate the kind of euphoria usually associated with anything bearing his stamp. The budget, thus, appears to have become a victim of Modi’s own success.

While investors had hoped Modi would use his strong election mandate to unleash a raft of reforms comparable to the opening up of the economy in 1991, many voters expected him to work a miracle to curb prices, create millions of new jobs and improve people’s lifestyles.

Given the mountain of expectations, finance minister Arun Jaitley’s job was never going to be easy.

In what is clearly a ‘thank you voter’

budget, the government raised tax income exemption limits, cut prices of middle class aspirations goods such as LCD/LED television sets and branded clothes, eased norms to boost housing as well as raised tax incentives on home loans.

Still, it was no mindless revenueeroding populism.

Jaitley presented a budget to parliament on Thursday that not only vowed financial probity by restricting the fiscal deficit to 4.1% of gross domestic product in 2014-15, but also virtually keeping spending unchanged if one takes inflation into consideration.

In a signature initiative, which has been awaiting parliamentary nod for more than a decade, the government said it will also lift limits on foreign investment in defence and insurance

to 49% from 26%.

Consider the long term benefits of the above measures: Lower deficits will lead to a reduction in inflation.

Indigenous production of defence equipment will save precious foreign exchange, which in the long run should trigger a fall in the current account deficit.

In turn, balanced accounting books should stabilise the rupee and help in any future move towards full convertibility of the currency.

Some of Jaitley’s far-reaching announcements were related to taxation, including a move towards a common Goods and Services Tax and a high level committee to review retrospective tax claims as well as a promise not to destabilise the tax regime with retrospective demands as far as possible.

To restart the investment cycle that can create the millions of jobs India needs, the government has eased foreign investment rules and offered investment allowance at the rate of 15% to the manufacturing sector that puts in more than Rs. 25 crore in any year in new plant and machinery.

The government will also seek to raise a record $13 billion from selling state assets - nearly four times what the previous government raised in the fiscal year ended in March 2014. The government has also stated it will better target food and fuel subsidies.

In its far-reaching implications, Jaitley’s proposals have the potential to be a game changer for India’s economy.

It’s a pity the new government’s budget has fallen short of the most bullish expectations.

World’s Highest Railway Bridge, Taller than Eiffel, Being Built in the Himalayas KAURI (HT): Indian engineers are toiling in the Himalayas to build the world’s highest railway bridge which is expected to be 35 metres taller than the Eiffel Tower when completed by 2016.

The bridge is expected to be 359 metres (1,177 feet) high when completed -- surpassing the world’s current tallest railway bridge over the Beipanjiang River in China’s Guizhou province, which stands at 275 metres high.

“It is an engineering marvel. We hope to get this bridge ready by December 2016,” a senior Indian

Railways official told AFP. “The design would ensure that it withstands seismic activities and high wind speeds,” he said Wednesday.

Work on the bridge started in 2002 but safety and feasibility concerns, including the area’s strong winds, saw the project halted in 2008 before being green-lighted again two years later.

The estimated cost of the project, which is being handled by Konkan Railway Corporation, a subsidiary of state-owned Indian Railways, is $92 million.

The bridge will connect Baramulla to Jammu in the Himalayan state with a travel time of six-and-a-half hours, almost half the time it currently takes.

The main arch is being erected using two cable cranes attached on either side of the river which are secured on enormous steel pylons, according to engineers of the project.

The 1,315-metre long bridge will use up to 25,000 tonnes of steel with some material being transported by helicopters due to the tough terrain,

they said.

“One of the biggest challenges involved was constructing the bridge without obstructing the flow of the

river,” the railways official said.

“Approach roads had to be constructed to reach the foundations of the bridge,” he added.

24 July 18, 2014 2nd Investec Test at Lord’s: India’s Nightmare

BY SIDDHARTH VISHWANATHAN LONDON (Gocricket): Lord’s cricket ground is called the Mecca of cricket.

The mere mention of the name invokes history and nostalgia. Every event, every run, every wicket, every injury and every bit of fielding is noticed to detail at this venue. It is called the Mecca of cricket and it had its headquarters there. It is the place where laws are made and laws are implemented.

There is a sense of occasion when a player or team visits this venue.

However, it has an ugly truth for India as they lock horns with England in the second Test starting on Thursday.

Before we get to the ugly truth, let us hark back to the past and revisit those golden days when India enjoyed success at this venue. Who can forget the debut of Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid in 1996, when both these men played knocks that would set them on their path to greatness. No one will ever forget India’s Natwest series final chase of 326 when two young men, Mohammad Kaif and Yuvraj Singh, helped India recover from 146/5. The joy was unbound and Ganguly waived his shirt off in delight.

Now, the darkness. If one has to look at India’s performance in Test matches at this venue, then it is a nightmare. In 82 years since they started playing Tests at Lord’s, India has managed just one win and that was 28 years ago. This table highlights the Win/Loss [W/L] ra-

tio of India and compares it with other teams.

In 16 Tests, India have tasted 11 defeats, the most for any Test playing team at Lord’s. Although they are above Sri Lanka thanks to the win achieved in 1986, one can see that Sri Lanka have drawn five out of the seven Tests. Australia’s record at Lord’s is enviable. They lost a Test in 1934 but did not lose again for 75 years before Andrew Flintoff’s fiery spell of 5/92 led England to victory over their old enemy for the first time in the 21st century at this venue. Australia lost their next match at Lord’s in the 2013 Ashes.

India came close to losing in 2007 but they were saved by MS Dhoni, S Sreesanth and the rain.

They have tasted defeats in 1990 and 2002, with the loss of 1990 been traumatic as Mohammad Azharuddin won the toss and inserted England in on a belter. Graham Gooch took the opportunity to score a triple century and aggregate 456 runs in a match, still a record in Tests.

The average runs scored per wicket is an important indicator of a team’s performance while batting in a Test at Lord’s. Higher the number of runs per wicket is an indication of batsmen putting a higher price on their wicket and the bowlers working extra hard to snap up their wicket. This table below gives the list of average runs per wicket for teams at Lord’s.

Surprisingly, Sri Lanka have the

best average at his venue for batsmen per wicket. They have scored over 450 at Lord’s five times, out of which they have exceeded 500 twice. India, on the other hand, have just crossed 450 once and that was in 1990 when they made 454. Their average of 24.63 per wicket is the least among all the countries mentioned and it is the inability of the Indian batsmen to build partnerships that has hurt them the most at this venue.

Bowling records This section has been broken into two periods. The first period is from January 01, 2000 till December 31, 2007. The second period is from January 01, 2008 till the end of the last Test at Lord’s between England and Sri Lanka.

The criterion for pace bowlers is over 10 wickets at this venue in the period while for the spinners, it is more than five wickets.

If one has to look at the characteristic of the traditional Lord’s wicket, the first period is an indication that it was hard for the bowlers. The averages for both spin and pace are near and over 30 in this period. The numbers show that pace comfortably outguns spin.

The wickets tend to be hard and they tend to not deteriorate over the course of the five days. This changes dramatically in the second period. The pace bowlers have had a field day at Lord’s from the 2008 period onwards. They have taken the most five wicket hauls while the spinners have worked

hard for their purchase of wickets.

If the second Test is played on the Lord’s pitches that have been employed for the past five years, expect pace to play a huge role.

Lord’s traditionally has been a favourite hunting ground for batsmen all over the world. It is a different matter that legends have often failed here but the following tables show that batsmen have had a good run. Once again, the first period is from 01 January 2000 till 31 December 2007 and the second period is from 01 January 2008 till the last Test played between England and Sri Lanka in June.

The average first innings score in the last five years at Lord’s is a staggering 403. This is comfortably the best average among England venues when it comes to the first innings. In the second and third innings, the scores hover close to 300, indicating that it is a very good pitch for batting. Not many Tests have gone into the fourth innings but when they do, the average score drops down to 192. This seems to be a bit of an oddity when you consider that even the bowling averages at this period were excellent. However, one must take into account that the last two Tests played at Lord’s before the Sri Lanka match witnessed low scores. Anderson Charged L3 LONDON: England fast bowler James Anderson has been charged under Level 3 of the ICC Code of Conduct for allegedly “abusing and pushing Ravindra Jadeja” on the second day of the first Investec Test at Trent Bridge.

Anderson faces a ban of at least two Tests if he is found guilty as the minimum sanction for a Level 3 violation is four suspension points and two equates to missing one Test. He now faces a hearing which, according to the ICC code, needs to take place within 14 days.

The complaint was not brought by the umpires but by the India team manager, Sunil Dev, who told ESPNcricinfo he lodged the complaint only after confirming the incident with India captain MS Dhoni, other players and coach Duncan Fletcher.

“Mahi [Dhoni] and everyone complained that he [Anderson] physically touched him [Jadeja] and pushed him. It was all over the dressing room,” Dev said. “It is serious matter only because you can’t push anybody. So I put in a complaint with the match referee.”

The ECB reacted with surprise and anger that India had reported Anderson for what they described as a “minor incident” in a press release. In retaliation, the ECB notified its intention of lodging a complaint against Jadeja as well.

“James Anderson categorically denies the accusations made against him and the ECB have pledged their total support for the player should he be charged,” the board said.

Though Dev did not respond to the ECB reaction, another India team official said had it actually been a minor incident, it would not have warranted a complaint.

The alleged incident took place after the players left the field for lunch on the second day and that it was reportedly a continuation of a verbal altercation between Anderson and Jadeja as they were walking off.

“All Level 3 breaches carry a penalty of between four and eight suspension points. Two suspension points equates to a ban of one Test, or two ODIs.

Centre Wants to Lower Visa Fees, Air Fares

PANAJI: The Centre wants to decrease visa fees and air fares in a bid to boost tourism in India, Union Tourism Minister Shripad Naik on Sunday said.

“We are charging USD 100 as visa fee while other countries like Sri Lanka and Maldives charge only USD 25. We want to bring it on par with these countries which are attracting large chunk of tourists,” he told PTI here.

The Union government is also working on lowering air fares, which is discouraging tourism growth in the country, he said.

are working towards reducing the air fares so as to stop the travellers getting diverted to these destinations,” he said.

The e-visa facility which was announced for nine airports in the recent Union budget would be extended to other states in a phased manner, the minister said.

“Infirstphasewehave taken nine airports, but in a phased manner it will be extended to other states,” Naik said, adding that Goa airport would be covered in the first phase.

Difficulty in getting timely visa has been discouraging travellers from visiting India, he expressed.

Naik refrained from commenting on the off shore casinos’ issue, stating that it is a state subject and the Union Tourism Ministry does not deal with it.

The BJP-led state government had recently decided to move the off shore casinos out of Panaji’s Mandovi river by 2015 as there was lot of opposition by locals over the casinos being operated near Goa’s capital city.
