EMGH Honors Congressman Al Green, Provides Construction Update

By Pramod Kulkarni Houston: Peace through non-violence is one of the eternal preachings of Mahatma Gandhi. An eternal venue to convey the life and teachings of India’s Father of the Nation will soon be a reality at the Eternal Gandhi Museum of Houston (EMGH).

At a reception at India House on the evening of Saturday, July 16, EMGH trustees honored Congressman Al Green before a select audience of donors and dignitaries. Cong. Green was responsible for the passage of community funding of $3 million through the US House of Representatives and the Senate.

Budgeted for a total cost of $13 million, EMGH is a three-acre facility at 12379 Riceville School Road, adjacent to Sam Houston Tollway and West Airport Road in southwest Houston. EMGH trustees have raised about $7 million of the funding through government funding, foundation grants, and private donations.

EMGH is a cultural and educational museum dedicated to preserving Mahatma Gandhi’s legacy of nonviolent conflict resolution by cultivating universal values of truth, nonviolence, peace, love, and service.

Opening in 2023, it will be the only museum in the Americas dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi.

At the reception on July 18, Dr. Manish K. Vani welcomed the audience and introduced the Swar Sangam choir, which presented two of Gandhi’s favorite bhajans, “Vaishnav Janato” and “Ram ka Gungan”.

Swar Sangam returned to the podium at the conclusion to lead the audience in singing of the bhajan, “Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram”.

Keynote speaker for the evening was Dr. Clayborne Carson with Stanford University, who spoke about how Mahatma Gandhi not only inspired Rev. Martin Luther King, but the entire Black civil rights movement. Many of the civil rights movement leaders had visited India to speak directly to Mahatma Gandhi at his Sabarmati ashram in Ahmedabad.

Stating how EMGH represented a highlight of India’s “Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav”, the 75th anniversary of India’s independence, Consul General Aseem Mahajan revealed that the Government of India had facilitated the donation of Gandhi’s bronze statue, which will be the centerpiece of the EMGH outdoor pavilion.

Chris Mozier and Cynthia Torp of Solid Light, which designed the exhibit space, guided the audience through each of the unique exhibit features. Lorie Westrick of RDLR Architects explained how the humble nature of the Gandhi exhibits in India and the spinning wheel (charkha) inspired the EMGH architectural design.

Tina Khatri of TDK Construction presented photos of the current state of the building. The evening concluded with dinner catered by Dawat Cuisine.

$4 Million Dakri Family Gift Supports UH’s New Center for Economic Inclusion

By Chris Stripes The Dakri family has pledged $4 million to support the University of Houston’s new Center for Economic Inclusion (CEI) in the C. T. Bauer College of Business.

Just launched in May, the CEI’s programs build on Bauer’s awardwinning SURE program (Stimulating Urban Renewal through Entrepreneurship), which trains students in business development while simultaneously educating and enabling under-resourced entrepreneurs in the community to launch businesses.

In recognition of the gift, the center will be called the Musa and Khaleda Dakri Center for Economic Inclusion.

The gift establishes an endowed chair to support the center’s chair/ director position and an endowed professorship to expand the institute’s research priorities, which includes research on small business entrepreneurship. It also provides significant support for research costs and graduate research fellowships for students.

Natives of India, Musa and Khaleda Dakri are longtime Houston residents who have been married for 54 years. Musa has been the chairman of Wallis Bank for more than 30 years while their sons, Asif and Faizel, serve as Wallis Bank’s chief executive officer and chief information officer, respectively. Hindu Heritage Youth Camp (HHYC) Counselors Preparing for 210 Campers

By Dhawani Dawar Houston: The excitement of the counselors is palpable in the air as they work vigorously to prepare the arts and crafts supplies for camp. Another group of counselors sits in the corner with the directors practicing their educations and ensuring that everything is perfect for their campers. This hustle and bustle occurs every Sunday at Keshav Smruti in Houston, TX as counselors organize everything down to the last detail for the 210 campers expected this year.

Each counselor realizes the importance of Hindu camp and the role it plays in the lives of the campers – strengthening religious and cultural ties. Thus, the preparations for the “best five days of the year” are in full swing.

Hindu Heritage Youth Camp (HHYC), founded in 1984, has aimed to “inspire the younger generation by teaching them the rich values and ideas of their heritage” for 38 years now. Children from the greater Houston area come together to discuss India’s rich history, learn age-old Hindu

traditions such as yoga, and form bonds with each other while playing games like “steal the butter.”

Life-long friendships come out of these five days, and many campers go on to serve the community that once served them by becoming counselors, coordinators, and directors. They spread the knowledge and wisdom they once received to the next generation of campers.

The five-day camp in Medina, Texas is packed with numerous activities that appeal to each age group. This year, we have over 60 college students and recent graduates who have worked tirelessly to organize daily games, educa-

tions, and arts-and crafts for the that occur each day. Without the hard work of our counselors, camp would not be possible. Sara Joshi, a 5th year counselor, explains that “I met some of my best friends at camp and learned to appreciate my Hindu Heritage. I want to provide these campers with the same pivotal experience HHYC had for me because camp is where I learned to be proud of my culture and my roots.”

Camp will be directed by Ranjan Veludandi and Shivangi Dixit this year. Ranjan is a recent graduate from the University of Texas at Austin, and this is his second year as a director. Ranjan explains

that this year of meetings has been quite different. “We have taken on a hybrid format of Sunday meetings. We started especially early this year with Sunday zoom meetings and now will be meeting in person for the final touches before camp. We are learning to adapt to the new environment around us and are prepared for any challenges that come our way. Can’t wait to see everyone there!”

Shivangi Dixit is a recent graduate from Texas A&M University.

She has served as both a counselor and coordinator in the past.

This year will be her first year of directing. Shivangi states that she is extremely excited because “the

counselors and coordinators have worked rigorously to prepare phenomenal education topics that will give campers an insight to their cultural background. Hopefully, campers will leave HHYC with new knowledge to share with their family and friends.

I am counting down the days till July 26th.

HHYC is only possible due to the hard-work of our counselors and support of it’s umbrella organizations, Hindus of Greater Houston.

Furthermore, there are a multitude of volunteers who help out behind the scenes during camp – there is a camp doctor who ensures the wellness of the campers, volunteers work in the kitchen to prepare homecooked meals, and sponsors to fund the various supplies. In the future, HHYC is looking forward to building its permanent home at Texas Hindu Campsite.

This is the third instalment of ZEE5 Global’s marquee gangster drama that has two successful seasons till now following two different political leaders cum criminals.
