Sri Guruvayurappan Temple Construction Enters Phase Two
By Chittor Ramachandran HOUSTON: Sri Guruvayurappan Temple building construction entered the second phase last weekend. Although crossing a major milestone of any building project is something worth a celebration, this was much more than a manmade milestone. The religious importance of this event is distinctly recognized and conceptually auspicious. I had the rare opportunity to witness the entire process that is based on the ancient ritual that developed at our ancestral homeland of India. As I rewind my mental video tape, I thought I should share its contents with you all while each segment of it is still fresh in my mind. The splendid seventy two hours at Sri Guruvayurappan Temple concluded on Saturday (June 25) late into the night, imprinting in the minds of nearly six hundred devotees an unforgettable experience. Thanthri Sri Kariyannur Divakaran Nambuthiri’s concise briefing of the weekend events stands out in my mind – in his words, “Just like in Dwapara yuga when all the Devatas assembled when Sri Krishna took his avatar on earth, garbhanyasam has just initiated the presence of all the Devatas as Sri Guruvayurappan is going to take His archa-avatar (incarnation on the idol) in this Kali yuga. In essence, the presence of all the divine forces will begin to assemble in this site.” The devotees were blessed with dry weather throughout the weekend, although the organizers had taken all precautions to protect the visitors from any potential rain with a multitude of large tents all over the temple premises. The mysterious thunder and a mild shower that occurred soon after the installation of Shadhadharam generated overwhelming joy among the devotees. In the Hindu tradition, a rain shower is an expression of heavenly blessings and approval of an auspicious beginning. Above all, it was a gentle reminder that life’s experiences, pleasant or unpleasant, are determined by the divine sanction. The rituals associated with garbhanyasam were in accordance with the Vedic tradition that has been passed on for generations. Elaborate rituals during this event included Ganesha pooja, Shadhadhara Prathishta, rituals to ward off negative influences, ishtaka sthapanam, etc. These rituals are no less complicated than the names of the

rituals themselves! Individuals qualified to perform such specialized and rare rituals are few. Guruvayurappan devotees consider themselves to be blessed to have the availability of Sri Nambuthiri to perform these rituals. In an interview with one of the Vedic scholars Dr. Parameswaran Thirumulpad, a visiting sociologist, he explained the need for supporting this temple as a social necessity. He is of the opinion that there is urgency in initiatives to preserve ancient traditions like Shadhadhara Prathishta. As the world population is exploding and cultures are mixing rapidly, there is a potential that we may be the last in the link that binds us to the past. Several people in the crowd I spoke to were fascinated by the Time Capsule that was buried ceremoniously with the sounds of chenda melam in the background. The Time Capsule does not have any religious significance, but it is a symbol of this community’s vision to preserve the rich cultural traditions. Sri Guruvayurappan Temple building is being built as a beautiful edifice with intricate granite
work, and wall paintings with all its majesty and glory. While we wait eagerly to see it finished in a year or two, a unique and overwhelming emphasis to incorporate temple arts with equal status is in the planning. This is because the administration is committed to consider temple art forms as important as mortar and bricks. “We realize that kshetra kala (temple art) and bhakthi (religious devotion) are interdependent and inseparable,” said Sri Somarajan Nair, president of the temple. This is especially important when Hindu-
Devotees ceremoniously carrying nidhikumbham towards the construction site ism is transplanted and taking its roots in the western world. Hindu temples are the birthplaces of almost all the art forms of Indian origin, and hence an appropriate venue for the preservation of these arts. The spectacular dance presentations made by several dance schools filled the temple premises with joy and happiness on the evening of Saturday, June 25, the final day of the events. A genuine interest in teaching and learning
Bhagavad Gita and Narayaneeyam exists in the core of this temple. It was very refreshing to see the participation of the youth in learning such texts. There was also enthusiastic participation in contests organized by the temple. The decorated sanctum sanctorum looked elegant against the background of niramala and lighted shining oil lamps. Delicious meals made and served by the volunteers deserve special appreciation.
Devotees witnessing, perhaps, a once-in-a lifetime ceremony

Father’s day celebration c delayed, But a Father not Forgotten By Jawahar malhotra HOUSTON: “It all began thirteen years ago,” said Rajan Radhakrishnan with a grin, thinking back to that day in 1998. “It was April 18 and Padmakant Mehtaji, the President of the Indian Senior’s Citizen Association, had come to us at Madras Pavillion and asked, ‘Can’t you do something for the Senior’s Association?’.” Rajan was resplendent in a black cotton cowboy shirt with red embroidered top half and sleeves, his mustache bouncing as he smiled. “Of course, we couldn’t turn him down,” continued Alpa Shah, a co-owner of Madras Pavillion “and we have been doing this Father’s Day song program and catering the lunch at our cost for all these years.” “And we’re happy to do it,” added Rajan whimsically. “It reminds me of my father, who passed away some years ago. I’m doing this for him too,” he added. “And they are such good listeners, they really enjoy it.” This year, the two of them were joined by Saroja Alloju and Veena Kaul (who also sang last year) to sing a medley of nearly 20 songs – Bollywood hits from the 60’s and 70’s – to a rapt audience of over 300 seniors. Many knew most of
or when Veena sang “Aap ke nazaron ne samja, pyar ke kabil mujhe”, an old classics now, but very much a part of the youth of the seniors as each song elicited a memory of a time long ago in India. “Ajeeb dasatan hai yeh” also sang by Veena just before the end of the program was a big singalong song too (for a video clip, see IAN’s website: indoamericannews.com). “We set out to capture that mood with this collection,” said Alpa as she introduced each song with background of the movie, the stars and composers. At the end of the program, the seniors presented the performers with token presents of potted plants. The ISCA has been growing by leaps and bounds, so much so

that it has closed its paid membership (for a $10 annual fee), which stands at 700 right now, until the December-January enrollment period. “When we have any function, we get easily 300 people,” said President Praful Gandhi, a stat that would be the envy of many other organizations. “We might have to have two settings for the same program!” added Vice-President Lalit Chinoy, “but it’s always the dozen or so who do all the work!” To get a handle of this swelling membership, the ISCA has turned to modern technology. At a table by the door, they were making laminated ID cards with pictures and SKU codes to show their af affiliation. “That way, we just swipe you in at the next event,” said the Chinoy as he worked the table.

Bala Vihar 2011 Graduation at c chinmaya Prabha
By Uma aggarwal HOUSTON: Chinmaya Mission Houston proudly celebrated the graduation of 30 Bala Vihar students on June 12 in a special ceremony that honored both their scholastic achievements and their committed learning of Hindu scriptures and Indian culture. One of the crowning moments in this year’s graduation was when one of the graduates, Dev Gandhi, came on stage. His father Manish Gandhi himself graduated from Bala Vihar in 1985 and to see a whole generation guided by the wisdom of the Balavihar tradition was most gratifying to the Acaryas Gaurang Nanavaty and Darshana Nanavaty. The Nanavatys have dedicated themselves to teaching in Houston since 1982, guided by the inspiration of the spiritual Master Swami Chinmayananda. Houston Bala Vihar also has the advantage that Acarya Darshana Nanavaty has compiled the entire set of Balavihar teaching guidebooks, from the kindergarten to 12th grade level, used in Bala Vihars worldwide. So, it was a great, visible testimony to enduring service when both a father and son walked the same path, with the same inspiring guidance. This was also a meaningful moment to the entire Chinmaya Mission family where sincere parents bring their children to imbibe the sacred tenets of Hinduism. It is not easy to sustain the interest in a distant culture while growing in

another country and when a father and son graduate from the same institution, it renews the faith of everyone –parents, teachers and children, that Sanatana Dharma can be followed anywhere in the world. This grand vision was the dream of Pujya Gurudev Swami Chinmayananda when he started the Bala Vihar wing of Chinmaya Mission as early as 1955.He saw children as the architects of a future world filled with strong character and spiritual values. Inspired by him, the entire Balavihar curriculum is designed to grow with children from their tender years. On June 12th, the 2011 graduation ceremony started with Acarya Gaurang Nanavaty giving a discourse based on the “shikshavalli” part of the Taittriya Upanishad.
Acarya Gaurangbhai reiterated the wisdom of the Upanisadic commencement address, addressing specifically the graduating students stepping into the real world to pursue their dream careers. He elaborated on the true meaning of the famous verse “Satyam Vada”“Speak the truth”, whereby work in the world shines with right values and convictions. To see the oneness in everyone, because the entire world is a manifestation of One Reality, should be the ideal of every graduate. He emphasized on doing our duty, working hard and making a commitment to keep up the scriptural studies. After the Acarya’s address, the audience got a proud glimpse of each graduate in a slideshow presentation -their accomplishments, their selected college, how many
Recounting their Balavihar experiences, Kunal Pasrija recalled his 7th grade learning about reincarnation. Srinidhi Rao made the audience laugh with a self-made favorite quote: “Take action to get action!” Priyanka Mehta stressed individuality with Oscar Wilde’s quote of “Be yourself, everyone is already taken.” Nipun Marwaha favored imagination with Albert Einstein’s “Logic will get you from A to B, but imagination will get you everywhere.” Many graduates this year had attended Bala Vihar for 12 to 14 years, and had unforgettable memories like lock- ins, Holi & Chinmaya Camp celebrations along with being student teachers of younger Bala Vihar kids. The memorable programconcluded with a cake cutting ceremony and the graduates served lunch to Balavihar teachers to show their gratitude. n neurofeedback: sounds like s science Fiction? s
Announcement
SUGAR LAND: In the 21st century, there has been a change in the way people take care of themselves, and many are taking a more proactive role in managing their health for their own overall wellbeing. Neurofeedback enhances these efforts to increase physical, psychological, emotional and spiritual wellness. Here in Sugar Land, Dr. Anand Vyas offers a safe, natural, comfortable, effortless, enjoyable, drug-free, and noninvasive approach called Neurofeedback to help clients use their brain and central nervous system to make quick, positive, long-lasting changes in their lives. Neurofeedback is a more advanced branch of biofeedback that focuses on the brain and central nervous system. People using neurofeedback have experienced relief from: Anxiety, depression, ADHD, bipolar disorder, autism, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), sleep problems, chronic pain, learning disabilities, anger, cognitive impairment, epilepsy, and migraines/headaches. Also, students, business professionals, musicians and athletes have used neurofeedback to improve mental and physical performance. Based on empirical evidence available at present, researchers recommend neurofeedback training as a good alternative to using medications to treat ADHD, especially when parents/patients choose not to use medications or when patients experience undesirable side effects. Research findings indicate that people with ADHD have an excess of theta brain waves and fewer than average beta brain waves. Researchers that support using neurofeedback to treat ADHD believe that neurofeedback training decreases theta brain waves while increasing beta brain waves; therefore, decreasing ADHD symptoms by increasing arousal. Researchers also recommend neurofeedback training as an alternative or as a cotreatment along with psychotherapy and psychopharmacology for epilepsy, depression, anxiety, traumatic brain disorders, and addictive disorders. Neurofeedback meets the American Association of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry’s criteria for ‘Clini-
cal Guidelines’ for treatment of ADHD, seizure disorders, depression, reading disabilities, addictive disorders, and anxiety (e.g., obsessive-compulsive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, post traumatic stress disorder, phobias). How does it work?: Neurofeedback/ Dr. Anand Vyas
NeurOptimal® gives the brain information about its own activity and it helps the brain to reorganize on its own by naturally releasing its own “stuckness” and that can help restore the brain waves to better patterns of functioning. It stabilizes the nervous system, so we can feel at peace and enjoy better sleep, memory, concentration, self-esteem, creative, athletic, academic and work performance. It is like a gym for your brain and the training promotes positive change and growth at the neurological level of the brain. NeurOptimal® is the most advanced neurofeedback technology available today. Dr. Anand Vyas, also known as Dr. V, is a Nationally Certified Counselor (NCC)/ Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), licensed by the Texas State Board of Examiners of Professional Counselors. He is specialized in showing children, adolescents, adults and geriatrics how to reach their full potential and how to experience total health by using innovative and powerful methods of psychotherapy, counseling, neurofeedback, clinical hypnosis, medical meditation and yoga therapy. He also conducts workshops on meditation and teaches different breathing techniques for complete mind-body-emotional wellness. By Jawahar malhotra HOUSTON: It wasn’t just the size of the wedding party alone that warpped the mind this past weekend. It was also the organization that it took to manage an invited list of nearly 1,300 people who came to witness the spectacle of the marriage of Hasu and Sarla Patel’s only daughter Sharmee to Nikhil, the son of Manhar and Nayna Patel of Charlotte, North Carolina. The couple met through a mutual friend about a year ago. A team of close friends, relatives and members of the Leuva Patidar Samaj of USA, of which Hasu Patel is the incoming President, worked behind the scenes and at every step over the three days, starting on Friday, June 24 with a mehendi ceremony for 250 at the Patel residence in far west Houston. “The entire Houston membership of the LPS volunteered in making the arrangements go smoothly,” said a happy but tired Hasu three days after the wedding. To add to his happiness. during a call he made to India on Friday, Pramukh Swami Maharaj gave the couple his blessings for the wedding. The big day was Saturday with the Satak and Sangeet that started at 3pm at the Arabia Shriner’s Temple on Harwin Drive near the West Belt which was attended by almost 1,200 guests. The groom’s family came in three touring buses and were delayed by traffic. Other guests flew in from London, Canada, India and around the country. The entertainment for the evening was by the popular Bnubhai Vora and his ensemble who flew in from Mumbai for the entire three days. Dj Indo (who’s real name is Jason Thayll) kept the music pumping for the rest of the evening as family, friends and dignitaries were introduced on the 30
foot long stage. Decorations were provided by Décor to Remember, with table arrangements by River of Flowers. The wedding was coordinated by Electric Karma. With three full bars that served endlessly, the huge crowd of guets could eat from two buffet lines food by Raj Bhog caterers of New York who flew in especially for
the wedding to prepare the food on site. The Hindu wedding took place on Sunday night at the Stafford Centre and mingled traditional and contemporary elements, although
the ceremony itself was conducted by three priests and was televised on two huge screens on either side of the huge hall. About 1,350 guests in attendance, including Harris County Commissioner’s Court Judge Ed Emmet, Harris County Sheriff Adrian Garcia, Sugar Land Councilman Tom Abraham, Houston Councilman Al Hoang, ICC President Dr. Raj Bhalla, India House Chairman Sam Merchant and many other leaders of the community. Hasu Patel, a wellknown businessman owns several motels in the Houston area and has shown his committment to the community by working with AAHOA, IAPAC, and the ICC. He is also on the Board of the Houston First Corporation and also the Southwestern National Bank. After a honeymoon in Spain, the newlyweds will make their home in Florida where Nikhil will work as an attorney. Sharmee has a degree in Finance and is studying to complete her MBA.

living l iving the Anti-cancer life l
By lorenzo Cohen & david Servan SChreiBer HOUSTON: The body possesses a number of natural defenses that can create a barren, inhospitable terrain for cancer growth. These natural defenses are influenced and strengthened by healthy lifestyle choices such as a proper diet, physical activity, stress management, social connection, and limiting exposure to environmental pollutants. Modern oncology treatment is focused on destroying cancer cells or blocking cancer-related pathways which is an essential aspect of therapy. However, it’s becoming increasingly clear that truly effective cancer care should simultaneously foster a strong anticancer terrain by strengthening the body’s natural defenses. Over the past 30 years, early detection has been the primary and almost exclusive mantra of our medical institutions when it comes to cancer prevention especially breast and prostate cancer. The recommendation for these rather expensive mammograms and biopsies were based on the assumption that cancer inevitably progresses, and had become a largely unchallenged practice. Even though most experts have known for some time that the benefits of these screenings have limits, and that the downsides of overtreatment are significant, they have been frustrated by lack of an alternative strategy for prevention. The nascent field of Integrative Oncology aims to harness the power of lifestyle and behavior change to prevent cancer and to enhance cancer care by creating a comprehensive, integrative treatment plan that addresses all dimensions of care: physical, psycho-spiritual, and social across the continuum of care of prevention, active treatment, and through survivorship. It makes use of all appropriate therapeutic approaches, providers and disciplines to improve quality of life, to help manage symptoms,
and achieve the best possible treatment results. Existing initial research that follows the tenets of integrative oncology shows evidence that this approach can, in fact, strengthen natural defenses, modify the terrain of the body, and have an impact on long-term treatment results not only for cancer but for most other diseases. Modifiable lifestyle factors are known to prevent and/or reduce the risk of a majority of cancers — most experts now agree that more than 65 percent of cancer is preventable through appropriate lifestyle choices. For example, an 11-country European study published in the Journal of the American Medical AssociaAssocia tion in 2004 observed that people who did not smoke for at least
1 5 years, used moderate amounts of alcohol, had 30 minutes of physical activity (e.g., walking) six days a week, and ate a diet rich in anticancer ingredients (such as the Mediterranean diet, with fish, olive oil, plenty of vegetables and fruits, whole grains, and low in refined sugar and red meat) had a 60 percent lower chance of ever getting cancer. This was confirmed by another, larger study a few years later, with a similar reduction in cancer rates. The benefits of such lifestyle intervention even extend to women who already have cancer. In a large California-based study, women who were treated for their cancer had a 50 percent reduction in relapse risk if they ate five vegetables and fruits per day and practiced 30 minutes of physical activity six days a week. These are observational studies, but even more impressively, after conventional treatment for stage II or III breast cancer, women in a clinical
trial who participated in a lifestyle and stress-reduction program had a 68 percent reduction in mortality compared to those in a group that followed conventional treatment alone. Increasingly, scientists and physicians are acknowledging the role of the body’s natural defenses - understanding how lifestyle contributes to cancer risk and in promoting the necessary changes in lifestyle. We need to empower people to become active participants in their own health. It’s time to provide children in our schools, society as a whole, and physicians in our hospitals, education and clinical tools necessary to support an anti-cancer lifestyle not only because they will feel better if they get involved, but because it’s a recipe for good life, good science, and good medicine. The Indian American Cancer Network is committed to promote cancer awareness and prevention through education by organizing educational events in the community. Dr. Lorenzo Cohen will be giving a presentation on “Living the Anticancer Life: Strategies for a Better Life and Reducing Cancer Risk” on July 10 at 3pm at the India House. It is open to the public. He will discuss the current cancer epidemic in our society and around the world as countries adopt a western lifestyle. For more information, visit www.iacannetwork.org or call 713-370-3489 In partnership with M.D. Ander Anderson cancer Center, IACAN is look looking for individuals to participate in focus groups about the health status and health needs of the Asian Indian community. In conversation with singer s s shaan
By raChana hana SrivaStava Shantanu Mukherjee, famously known as Shaan , with the mellif mellifluous voice and captivating smile is on US tour these days. Some excerpts from his recent interview: Tell us something about your father Shree Manas Mukharjee .My father had been born and brought up in a poetic environment. His music and singing were very famous on radio and Java. He then came to Mumbai in the 1966 where his music was a part of many a films like Lakhon ki baat, Albert pinto ko gussa kyon ata hai? etc. Aprt from this, he did some Malayalam and Bengali films too. But Alas! at the very young age of 45 he passed away. Rafi ji , Lata ji and many others have sung under his music direction. Your try bring versatility in your voice and you change your voice at time while you sing? Reason behind that? I do it purposely because if you like somebody you will soon get bored of his usual style
of singing and would like to see more of him so that the freshness remains in his singing. Secondly if you are singing for a newcomer or a young actor, I have to keep my voice little soft and young because the heavy voice wont suit them. You have worked with many people internationally, how was the experience? It was nice to work with different people because artists have their own music company and they have their own taste towards music as well. But when I worked with them I actually felt that they are very open and do not take too much stress at work, they work at ease and hence it was very easy to work along. You are a composer and a music d i re c t o r well so is difficult to sing a song which is comp o s e d and directed by others or how is it different? All songs are good, if lyrics is good and the mu-
sic is good then one enjoys a lot singing such kind of songs. I do not think myself to be a great writer but yes I write what I feel. When its my album I enjoy my lyrics and music but when its somebody else’s I enjoy that as well. Are you currently working on some pop album? Yes one of my pop albums Har Lamha is ready to be released. You are a singer and a TV host as well? which is the one you enjoy more? Recording is something which I have been doing since my childhood and hence I enjoy it a lot, but hosting a show is not that easy as it seems. While hosting a show you have to say same things over and over again and that too in a dif different way. and I too wanted that whosoever is a part of the show they all should get respect and they should be introduced with all due respect. Along with that my hindi was not so good at that time so I had to give many retakes/ I never used Monitor or TelePrompter , I used to learn it by heart and then perform. You keep smiling always, what is the reason behind it? Just like that. I feel if you sing a song with happiness then it will make the listeners happy as well and then we sing more of a romantic songs and so I always smile. Tell us something about your Guru Ghulam Mustafa. I feel I have the worlds best Gu-

The first segment is like Rendezvous. The others have them playing games and doing fun stuff that give you some real insight into their personalities. Your favourite guest on the show? Oh, don’t ask me that! It’s just not possible to select a favourite. Are you going for the all-white look for your wardrobe and sets? I am dressed mostly in white, except for the first episode with Ranbir Kapoor, where I am wearing a black outfit with a little silver on it. The sets are designed by me and are white.

Chat shows have become gossipy after Koffee with Karan. What do you think of it? A chat show reflects the host’s personality. Just like Outlook reflects your editor’s personality. I have spent time with Karan; we love chatting. Koffee with Karan...was shaped by Karan. Are you apprehensive about compari comparisons with Koffee... No, I am clear on what my show is about. So what is your approach on the show? It reflects my curiosity to get to know more about the celebrities themselves and not what they think about colleagues or other people. You’ve been away. Why the long hiatus?
Honey, I was busy writing, conceptualising this show! There has been no show in the world with this kind of set, with such a format. What changes do you see in TV? All shows look the same. Everybody is copying too much; nobody has original concepts. Among the current crop of young celebs, who do you find it easiest to talk to? Touch wood, I can have great conversations with all of them. What are your future plans? I will be appearing in a film. Then I’ll be going on a holiday before I start work on the next instalment of the show. Outlook

Her initial years in Indian cinema did not kick start that well however she was quick to pick the pace and adapt to the norms of bollywood with movies like Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam,Devdas, Jodha Akbar, Dhoom 2, Guru, Raavan. Her perfor performance in Hum Dil De chuke Sanam
and Devdas won her Film Fare Award for best actress. Her latest film Enthiran (Robot), with Tamil super star Rajnikanth was a super hit and it was loved by the huge range of audience. She has been an aspiration for lot of Hollywood directors and producers, and she was fortunate enough to work in Pink panther 2. She has achieved a lot of milestones in the industry, as she was the first Indian actress to be a jury member at the Cannes Film Festival in 2003 and also the first Indian actress to be
waxed in Madame Tussauds. It’s not only her movies that make her so prestigious, but she is the global brand ambassador of L’Oreal. She graced the covers of India Today and the prestigious TIME Magazine. Moreover the Time Magazine has also listed her on their list of the “100 Most Influential People in the World Today”. She was not limited herself with acting but was also engaged with many social welfare activities. Aishwarya was the brand ambassador for the Eye Bank Association of India’s nationwide campaign to promote eye donation in India. But she also had to face many ups and down in

her life and she also had to go through her own share of downfall because of her links up. She grabbed everyone’s attention for her link up with super star Salman Khan. But they broke up after two years of relationship. The break up did not end quietly, the rumor about their relationship and gossip was big news for media. When the Salman Khan saga ended, Vivek Oberoi made his entry. The couple became the flavor of the season for each and every tabloid. After all these break up, she was always in a safer side and never made her official statement about either of the man. After all these controversies, the Bachchan junior entered into her life and just like a story of Hindi movie, her life had also turned in a different way, when Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarye Rai announced that they will get married. The couple married on 2007 at Bachchan residence, “Prateeksha”, in Juhu, Mumbai.

Recipe for a Renaissance
The cordial spirit of talks held last week, between Pakistani and Indian foreign secretaries in Islamabad, augurs well for relations between the two countries. When Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said to the media while travelling to Kazakhstan in April, “If I can succeed in normalising relations between India and Pakistan as they should prevail between two normal states, I would consider my job well done”, it meant not only optimism but also vision on his part for a better future for Pakistan and India. In the backdrop of the assassination of Osama bin Laden by the American Navy Seals in Abbottabad on May 2, one can observe a responsible handling of affairs by New Delhi and Islamabad, as hawks from the two sides tried to exploit the situation and launch a new phase of confrontation. Still, there are forces from both sides that will miss no opportunity to derail the Indo-Pak peace process. History proves that opportunities and moments of hope had also appeared in the past, but were wasted. What then is needed to ensure a peace process which can help bring a qualitative change in Indo-Pak relations? As pointed out by Harold Saunders, an American expert on the Israeli-Palestinian peace process, dismantling the “other walls” is a major condition for establishing a constituency of peace. But more than the “other walls” which impede the Indo-Pak normalisation process, it is the absence of a renaissance perspective which results in stand-offs, missed opportunities and the hardening of enemy images. The Indo-Pak peace process should not be confined to official rhetoric from the two sides but requires a movement at the popular level, so that a sense of ownership is created for a process which can bring enormous benefits for the poverty-stricken people of the two countries. Three important steps are required on the part of India and Pakistan. First, a renaissance approach would require focus on promoting better sharing of art, culture, music, history, archaeology and education. Second, in the political sphere, a renaissance approach would require reviving some of the symbols of peace and harmony which existed amidst the environment of hostility and mistrust. Third, symbols of Indo-Pak peace initiatives under track II and III - like the Neemrana dialogue, popular discourse which took place under the auspices of the Indo-Pak People’s Forum for Peace and Democracy, and other such forums - must be revitalised. When the revival of tolerance, accommodation and reasoning will prevail, the stage will come when policy makers will be persuaded to change their approach on issues which for long have acted as an impediment to Indo-Pak normalisation. Perhaps Manmohan Singh’s dream will have a practical application when his hope and vision get a positive response not only in his own country but also in Pakistan. Times of India

Back to Bad Times By Tavleen Singh It is both ironic and surreal that the economic boom that began in the early nineties should start winding down under the auspices of the man who made it possible. There have been hints of bad times since this year began. First, the economy slowed down, then came reports of foreign investors no longer thinking of India as their favourite destination. Now comes gloomy confirmation that foreign investors are no longer that interested in investing in India. This newspaper reported last Friday that “India is now the worst-performing market in the world.” As someone who remembers what India was like before Dr Manmohan Singh introduced his economic reforms, I read the story with growing alarm. This sense of impending doom grew when I read that Pakistan had attracted more foreign investment in the past six months than India. I found this especially disturbing because I remember that when I first went to Pakistan in the early eighties, it seemed like an economic powerhouse compared with India. It had better roads, better airports, better cars and the average Pakistani seemed richer and better fed. When our boom years began, as a direct consequence of the reforms, Pakistan’s political and military problems slowed it down and by the late nineties, it was India that looked much better. We may still have vast areas of poverty and horrible deprivation but we also have a huge middle class and on the whole India is more prosperous than it has ever been. So why are foreign investors fleeing and why are Indian investors beginning to be wary about investing in their own country? The simple answer to that question is this. The Government of India appears to have been on auto-pilot since the Bihar results dimmed Rahul Gandhi’s prospects of becoming prime minister and since the corruption scandals started tumbling out of government closets. When this happened, all three of the Congress Party’s top leaders seemed to vanish.
Now comes gloomy confirmation that foreign investors are no longer that interested in investing in India. The Indian Express reported last Friday that “India is now the worstperforming market in the world.”
The Congress Party is fortunate that our main Opposition party appears to be even more rudderless and adrift and exhibits an uncanny knack of always clutching on to the wrong issues. A good example comes from last week when instead of expressing concern over the economic downturn, the leader of the Opposition went on national television to make a melodramatic fuss about the alleged bugging of the Finance Minister’s office. The BJP’s role as our main Opposition party has been so unimpressive that it has been pushed out of the Opposition space by Anna Hazare and Baba Ramdev. Its pathetic efforts to jump on to Baba Ramdev’s caravan made it look particularly silly. What persuaded Sushma Swaraj to hotfoot it down to Baba Ramdev’s ashram in Haridwar on the very day that he announced plans for an armed rebellion? As for that business of dancing at Gandhiji’s Samadhi, it was beyond belief. With so much political nonsense going on in Delhi, it is not surprising that foreign investors have stopped taking India seriously. Our problems are not just to do with politics and corruption. The economic failures of Dr Manmohan Singh’s government are even more serious. There have been no economic reforms to speak of since his second term began. There has been almost no attention paid to the improvement of our ramshackle infrastructure and if there have been improvements in public healthcare and education, they have been infinitesimal. Had at least

these things improved, there may not have been the public rage against the government that Anna Hazare and Baba Ramdev have managed to tap into. Every Indian deals every day with some problem created by bad governance. The rich suffer slightly less than the poor because the rich can afford to buy water and electricity from private sources and they can afford to pay the bribes needed to make administrative processes work faster. Indians at the bottom of the economic ladder are ruthlessly squashed down as soon as they try to climb. If they open shops on city pavements, they are torn down. If they try to rent a hovel in some slum, they are asked for proof of earlier residence. If they try to learn how to drive in a city like Mumbai, they are asked to produce proof of identity. It is this daily humiliation at the hands of insensitive officials that has caused vast numbers of ordinary Indians to support the movement against corruption. If they are angry now, they are going to get a lot angrier when the economy slows down and we go back to those pre-reform times when everything was in short supply all the time. Would our economist prime minister like to explain why things have gone so badly wrong and what he plans to do to rectify them? If ever there was a time for him to lead, it is now. Indian Express

If y you Hurt, meditation m can Help ease Pain
By michael roizen We know, and you know, that chronic pain isn’t all in your head. But you can use your noodle to turn down the volume on agonizing aches, whether you’ve got back pain, arthritis or other day-in, day-out discomfort. The tool: an easy relaxation technique called mindfulness meditation. Bonus: It can counteract one of pain’s sneakiest, most frustrating downsides: memory loss. You may have heard that this type of meditation eases pain by soothing stress, but the more we learn about mindfulness, the better it gets. It also helps control your alpha rhythms, a type of brain wave that blocks out distracting information. Practising mindfulness a few minutes daily boosts your ability to focus by tuning out distractions like, yes, pain signals, and fears about pain — both mess with your memory. It improves your ability to recall important stuff (when you’re meeting your wife for dinner or where you put the dog’s leash). Want to give it a whirl? Find a quiet place. Get comfortable. Close your eyes, and breathe in and out at a natural
pace. Notice whether your breath feels warm or cool. When other thoughts, feelings and sensations crop up, acknowledge them, and then gently refocus on your breathing. After about 10 minutes, open your eyes and re-enter the world slowly. You’ll go about your day feeling better. -The Record.com

Cricketer Brett Lee Opens Music Schools in India
By Jas Sembhi Australian and IPL cricketer Brett Lee, has opened the first of his planned music schools in India for underprivileged children. Lee has setup his ‘Mewsic Foundation’ which will provide funding for instruments and teachers for the schools. The foundation has collaborated with some Non-Government Organisations (NGO’s) and charities in India to develop the programme of providing free music lessons for children from slums who are aged between 7-15 years. The first school from Lee’s ambitious plan is a music studio which has been opened in Deonar, a suburban neighbourhood of Mumbai. The studio will offer free music lessons to children who live in the nearby slum. Lee ecstatic about the facility, said, “It’s a beautiful place, the one we just opened in Mumbai, it’s like a sanctuary for the kids. They can learn different instruments, guitar, organ, flute, as well as learn to dance and sing from qualified teachers.” The impact of India’s slums hits all visitors when they visit for the first time and Lee was no exception and said: “I’ll never forget my first experience of seeing the poverty in India on my very first trip. I’ve seen extreme wealth and extreme poverty in India. I guess I’m lucky to have experienced that because if you only see one side you can’t fathom those extremes.” Being attached to India, Brett said he opened the school because he wanted to: “To express his love for
music and express his love for India.” Enthusiastic to help children, Brett added: “I think every child in the world deserves a chance in life. And what we are doing here with the music centres is to give the boys and girls a chance to fulfil their dreams.” Brett is no stranger to India as a cricket player but also has strong passion for music and after collaborating on a hit song with Asha Bhonsle called ‘Can You Tell a Girl’his love affair with music became very evident in India. He is feels music is a medium that can bring people together and the studio can provide an excellent method of helping these deprived children develop. “They can learn different instruments, guitar, organ, flute, as well as learn to dance and sing from qualified teachers,” said Lee. At the inaugaration ceremony for

meals coming from.” Most people would have thought a player of Brett Lee’s stature would have used sport and cricket as a medium of helping children in this way. Not the case with Brett, as he explained: “I could have easily helped out through sport or cricket. But music is my passion, my love and I know that music has so many healing qualities and powers. That’s what really appealled to me. It’s a chance to introduce young kids to music and help them overcome some of the things they’ve been through, whether it’s losing their parents or leaving home very early or experiencing child abuse.” Lee’s long-term plans are to open about 100 centres all around India. Initially, he would like to see at least 10 centres opened in 2011 and said: “By 2011 we would like to see ‘dus’ centres, ten centres around India and Mumbai and keep going from

chance of a l c lifetime: Give the Gift of life l ovarian. How to find a bone marrow or stem cells donor? Approximately 25 - 30 % of patients have a family member - a parent or sibling who is suitably matched and able to donate marrow since they share the same genetic type as the patient. Because a patient’s most likely match outside the family is someone of the same race, nearly 70 - 75 % of patients have to find unrelated donors of the same race. Caucasians have an 80% chance of finding a match from the National Bone Marrow Donor (NMDP) registry while ethnic minorities have only a 30-40% chance of finding a match from the existing registry. This is because of the 7 million registered donors in the current registry only 25% are Ethnic minorities (Asian, Pacific Islander, African American /Black, Hispanic/Latino, Native American, Multi-Race) According to the NMDP, approximately 50% of all registered Ethnic minority donors will NOT push through with donating if called as a possible match for a patient (whether because they are unreachable, they say “no”, or become medically ineligible). Whereas over 70% of Caucasian donors WILL proceed with donating if called as a possible matched. Who can register to be donors? Individuals between 18 and 60 years of age, in good general health with no history of cancer, heart disease or heart attack, or AIDS and diabetics not on insulin are eligible to register. How are donors and recipients matched? Matching donors and recipients is a multistep process. The potential donor’s Human Leucocyte Antigen (HLA) type or “tissue type” is deter determined from an oral mucosal swab or blood sample. This information is entered and maintained in the NMDP
data bank. When a data bank search identifies a match, the individual is contacted for additional tests and to make a final decision about becoming a marrow donor. The Donation Process If all six antigens of the donor blood cells match with that of the patient, the donor receives a thorough physical examination. The donation process is carried out in the operating room. About two to five percent of the liquid marrow is extracted from the pelvic bone using a special needle under local or general anesthesia. There may be some discomfort for a few days and this varies with each person. Peripheral blood or cord blood stem cells could be used in place of the marrow. The Transplantation process If a match is found, the patient undergoes pre-transplant treatment consisting of radiation and/or chemotherapy. The donated marrow or stem cells is transfused directly into the patient’s blood stream. The healthy donated cells travel to the patient’s bone cavities where they begin to grow and form new marrow. Who pays for the donation process? Donors never pay for donating and are never paid to donate. All medical costs for the donation process are covered by the NMDP or the patient’s medical insurance, ,as are the travel expenses and other nonmedical costs. Can you change your mind about donating? Uncommitted donors give false hope to patients awaiting transplant. Although a volunteer donor may decline at any stage in the process, once the match is made and the patient has started the pretransplant radiation or chemotherapy, there is no turning back. At that point, there is a moral obligation to proceed, continued on page

By P.g. ParameSwaran S Swaran , m.D Yes, you can give the gift of life to someone whose life is being threatened by cancer or other diseases. That someone right now is Devesh, in Houston, waiting for the gift of Life. The gift is in the form of a small amount of your bone marrow, which makes stem cells or stem cells from the peripheral blood or from the umbilical cord immediately after delivery of an infant, for transplantation. It is estimated that a marrow donor transplant could benefit more than 10,000 children and adults with life threatening disease every year. At present, several Bone Marrow donor registration drives are being held at different locations to find a match for 35 year old Devesh Patel. He has been married for 8 years and has a 32 year old wife. He is suffer suffering from a rare type of leukemia and his best chance of survival is a stem cell transplant. He has not find a match so far. What is bone marrow? Bone marrow is the soft spongy tissue found inside bones. It makes and stores about 95 percent of the body’s blood cells – the red blood cells, the platelets and the white blood cells. What are Stem cells? The blood cells that produce other blood cells are called stem cells. The most primitive of the stem cells, is called the pluripotent stem cell. This cell is different from other blood cells in that it is able to reproduce another cell identical to itself and also able to generate subsets of more mature cells. It is the stem cells that are needed in bone marrow transplantation. The stem cells can be obtained from the bone marrow, the peripheral blood or from the umbilical cord blood. Why is bone marrow transplant or stem cell donation needed? The goal of a bone marrow transplant is to cure many diseases and types of cancer. IPET Houston Jump Starts with First Adoption
HOUSTON: A report by the Mayor’s Task Force on Animal Protections a few years ago stated that “In 2004 alone, area shelters euthanized over 80,000 pets. The reason is that Houston has too many abandoned pets and an animal welfare community whose principal solution to the problem is euthanasia. Houston does too little to save these abandoned pets. In addition, adoption rates are low, in part because there is little demand for “used” pets and also because shelters do not do enough to find homes for pets in their care. Instead, euthanasia is the principal and depressingly sole solution. Recently, a few Indo-American animal lovers of Houston launched Indo-American Pet Enrichment Team of Greater Houston (IPETHouston). This is an Indo-American initiative dedicated to improving the welfare of animals in our community through no kill shelters, placement, spay/neuter, education and awareness. The goals of IPET-Houston are: • To educate Indo-Americans of Greater Houston about the importance of having their pets spayed/neutered, and to provide low- or nocost surgeries for those unable to afford it. • To provide care and a no-kill shelter for stray, abused or relinquished animals. • To educate the general population about the seriousness of pet overpopulation. • To be an advocacy group for Indo-Americans to end euthanasia as a means of controlling pet overpopulation, devocalization and other issues related to the humane treatment of animals in Greater Houston. • To participate in various outreach programs aimed at educating Indo-Americans about pets in general and adoption of pets, and finding safe, nurturing homes for those animals in need. IPET-Houston’s hope for the future is that there will be no inhumane treatment of animals. IPET-Houston will continue with its aggressive spay/neuter campaign, their owner-education programs and the hope that every pet adopted will be placed in a permanent, loving home. IPET-Houston believes that with the involvement of our community, we will make a significant impact on the welfare of companion animals, but IPET-Houston needs your help and understanding. the difference. Within just a few days of its launch, IPETHouston has tasted sweet success. Harry is a 4-year-old Boxer. His owners abandoned him as they could not maintain him due to a bad economy and were ready to leave Harry with SPCA. With the fear that Harry may be euthanized, a young Indo-American professional provided a foster home while IPET-Houston networked to find him a loving home. Within 7 days, IACF’s President-Elect, David Raj, who has had several pets earlier, came forward to adopt Harry. The picture-perfect story ends on a happy note with Kronos (his new name, meaning King of the Gods) finding a loving home and David finding an extremely affectionate companion. A message from David to IPET-Houston says it all, “Kronos is happy and settled in his new home with me. Thank you, IPET-Houston, for such a great gift!” IPET-Houston is on Facebook. 21 as the patient would almost certainly die without the transplant. Why donate? There is no monetary reward, no plaque or medal. There simply is the personal satisfaction of giving another human being the living gift of life. This human being could be a couple’s child, a mother or father or a brother or sister of one like you. Most of the donors say they would donate again if given a chance. How to join the registry? One can call 1-800-MARROW-2 to find a centre near you or to find locations where Marrow registration drives are being conducted. In Houston, call the Gulf Coast Marrow centre at 713 790 1200 to find a Gulf Coast regional blood centre nearby or to find the location of a Marrow drive that is being held in your neighborhood. Visit www.giveblood. org and click on Services to get more information on Bone Marrow donation. If you have joined the NMDP registry once, there is no need to join again. If you are not sure whether you have already joined, you can call 1-800 –MARROW-2 (1-800-627-7692) How can you help? If you are not registered already, register now. You can hold a bone marrow donor registration drive by calling the Gulf Coast Regional blood center. The staff at the center are always willing to help hold a drive at no

cost, irrespective of the number of people you expect to register. Why conduct the drives? The more the drives, the more people can be entered in the NMDP registry as potential donors. In the current NMDP registry only 25% of the registrants are minorities and people from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka constitute a very small percentage of this group. Because of this reason, patients from these countries are unable to find a match since the best match is between the same Ethnic individuals. There is a large South Asian population in this country and in the greater Houston area and there is no reason why we should let our brothers and sisters die for lack of a match. (Source: www.marrow .org) You can register to be a Donor at the upcoming Donor registration drives at George Brown Convention Center on July 2nd and 3rd from 7am-7pm during the 16th Biennial Jaina Convention, organized by the Federation of Jain Associations in North America. You can also register at George Brown Convention Center during India’s Independence day celebration on August 20th and during Janmashtami celebrations on August 27th. Please look for the Bone Marrow Donor Registration booths Dr.Parameswaran has been conducting Marrow donor registration drives in the Houston area for the past 15 years.

Magician Muthukad: “Where’s My Wand?’’
By Minu Ittyipe It’s called the Water Torture Escape Act. The magician is handcuffed, put in a plastic bag tied at the top and lowered in a glass case filled with water. Then electricity is passed through the water, and in a minute a spear hanging over the glass tank will slice through it. The magician has to escape from this situation in front of hundreds of gaping spectators. Gopinath Muthukad had spent two years working this act to perfection. The plan: his assistant would put off the electricity from another point, a light at a corner behind the audience would indicate that it was off. Muthukad had a hidden key to open the handcuffs. So the act began, the countdown for the spear to skewer down started, he quickly released the handcuffs with the keys, but the light in the corner never came on. The water tank was still charged. Thirty seconds, 20 seconds, the light still wouldn’t come on. Fifteen seconds and someone finally pulled the wires from the socket and Muthukad tore himself out of the tank. “In all the tension, my assistant forgot to put the electricity off. It was a really close shave,” he says still shuddering at the thought. That was almost 15 years ago at a performance in Kozhikode, a bustling city in north Kerala. Muthukad, our own Houdini, has come out unhurt from hundreds of such acts in the last two decades. And in recognition, last week, the International Magicians Society (IMS) in New York conferred the Merlin Award 2011, the “Oscar of the magic world”, on him for outstanding contribution to
It’s A Six Magician Gopinath Muthukad shows that there’s more to him than magic
the world of alchemy. The award levitates Muthukad into a famous club which includes the likes of David Copperfield, Lu Chen and Harry Blackstone. Magician Franz Harary, member of the board of directors of ims, says the Merlin is the most visible public award and the competition is hardcore. “Magic is such an enigmatic and nebulous art that it is hard to judge it. But when your peers vote you for the award, it’s wonderful. And Muthukad has raised the level of Indian magic to another level.” Back home, on a wet day in Thiruvananthapuram with the sun playing peek-a-boo, a very relaxed Muthukad lets on that it was his father’s stories that drew him to magic. His father, a farmer from Kavalamukkata, a remote village near Nilambur in Kerala, had a way with words, and he would loop young Muthukad’s imagination through an enchanting labyrinth of tales within tales. Every evening after a hard day’s work, his father would lie in his easychair
and Muthukad, the youngest of five children, would climb onto his lap. His father would then unspool a yarn. “His stories always had elements of magic and fantasy and largely centred around Kerala’s legendary magician, Vazhakunnam Neelakandan Namboothiri. I was hooked. There was nothing else I wanted to do,” says Muthukad. Muthukad put up his first solo show at a church festival. Well, almost his first solo show. He was only 10. His father had got a trouser and shirt tailored for him for the occasion. A large crowd had gathered, his family in the front row. It was to be a simple rope trick—a volunteer would cut a rope in two and Muthukad had to magically join it together. But the volunteer from the audience was a tall man and he saw the spare rope that Muthukad had concealed in his sleeve. “He pulled the rope out and waved it around for the audience to see. The crowd jeered and laughed. I fled the scene and wept bitterly. I almost gave up magic. But
the people in my village encouraged me to put up another show and slowly I regained my confidence,” he says. For Muthukad, it’s the audience which keeps him going even after all these years. The trick is to build a rapport with them, he says. Ace magician P.C. Sorcar Jr, the only other Indian to have won the Merlin award, agrees. “Magic is such an emotional art. You connect to people at some ecstatic level.” Which then begs the question: why haven’t magic performances in India not reached the level of showmanship and razzmatazz that it has in the West? Muthukad feels it’s because “today internationally magic has become a performing art of dance, music and other extravaganza. In India, we have not gone as high-tech as they have in the west. For instance, we still do not have a suitable venue for the likes of David Copperfield to perform.” It may also have to do with there being no great Hogwarts in India, for wizards or muggles, to learn magic. An attempt to rectify matters started in 1996, when Muthukad opened a Magic Academy (which is now affiliated to the Kerala University). The Merlin has also used his powers to spread social messages. “In 1990, I devoted a whole year to the Kerala literacy campaign. We called it Aksharajalam (Letter magic). Through magic I showed the value of letters to adivasis and villagers. Though people laughed during the shows, the message struck home.” Muthukad has also campaigned for national integration and social harmony, and spread awareness against smoking,
Headlining Acts • Breaking News: Muthukad predicts the headlines of 10 newspapers a day-and-a-half before they are printed. He writes the headlines and seals them in a bank vault. When it’s opened, his headlines match the newspaper’s. • Fire Escape Act: Muthukad is handcuffed and wound up tightly in chains. He is lifted by crane and lowered into a haystack soaked in kerosene which is then set on fire. He comes out unharmed. alcohol and drugs (Stop SAD). Meanwhile, the magic tricks continue though he no longer does escape acts like the ‘water torture’ one. “I am 48 years old and my body can no longer move with the required speed and agility.” He is now trying to perfect the art of the illusionist which includes reviving the old Great Indian Rope Trick. In Muthukad’s version, a coiled rope lying on the floor unwinds to the sound of music and ascends into the heavens and the swaying rope then slowly stiffens. A small boy climbs up the rope and disappears. “It’s possible to make the boy disappear at night but it’s still difficult do that in broad daylight,” he says. All his energies are right now focused on mastering the rope trick in daylight. In a way, Indian magic has come full circle. Outlook

Mobster Chhota Rajan Ordered J Dey’s Killing: Mumbai Police
MUMBAI (TOI): A fortnight after senior crime journalist Jyotirmoy Dey was shot dead, Mumbai police on Monday cracked the case claiming that underworld don Chhota Rajan was behind the murder, even as they remained tight-lipped about the motive. “The murder was planned by Rohit Thangappan alias Satish Kalya at the behest of Chhota Rajan. Kalya is a known shooter of Rajan gang and has worked for him earlier too,” Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Himanshu Roy told reporters. “While three persons were arrested from Mumbai, three were arrested from Rameshwaram in Tamil Nadu and one from Solapur,” he said. According to police, Kalya had received a call from Chhota Rajan around 20 days before June 11, the day when Dey was shot dead. “Rajan told Kalya he needs him to do a job and that money and weapons would be provided. Kalya then collected Rs two lakh from Chembur and the murder weapon along with 25 rounds of cartridges from Nainital,” Roy said. Police, however, did not disclose the motive behind the murder. The police have recovered the murder weapon. All the seven arrested in the case were produced before a local court which remanded
them to police custody till July 4. Roy further said that Rajan had kept the identity of the target a secret but had given description of the victim and his bike number a week before the killing. “Rajan had told Kalya, the target would be found either in Arel (where Mid-Day office is located) or in Pia, where Dry stays. On June 9 and 10, Kaila along with his associate Anil
After the murder, all the seven accused as per their plan went to Jogeshwari where they saw the news about the incident on television. “Only after seeing news channels, the shooters came to know about the identity of the person they had shot at. When they realized that they had killed a journalist, Kalya called up Rajan who assured them to stay calm. Rajan then asked them to collect Rs three lakh more and go out of Mumbai,” Roy said. After that the seven accused travelled around various places like Gujarat, Shirdi, Karnataka, Bijapur, Sangli, Solapur, Bangalore, Madurai and Rameshwaram. “Crime Branch sleuths first picked up Kalya from Rameshwaram. Patil in a separate press meet said, “I have announced a reward of Rs 10 lakh for the Mumbai Crime Branch team for exemplary work they have done in the case.”

Archie Eats a Samosa?
By Neeti Sarkar We’ve literally grown up with Archie comics so much so the red-haired heartthrob and his gang have come to be a part of our everyday life. The foodie in a group who manages to keep the pounds off is invariably called Jughead. In fact pizzas, burgers and ice-cream sodas have gained much popularity thanks to these youngsters from Riverdale. The publishers in keeping with the changing times, introduced Kevin Keller, the first ever gay character in the series last year and as if that change weren’t enough, Archie comics have officially taken the desi route, with the launch of Hindi and Malayalam editions in India. Jon Goldwater, Co-CEO, Archie Comics, at the launch said: “Archie comics have entertained fans for several generations. We wanted to give our fans in India something they could relate to, hence the move is to bring in some Indian flavour to the comic. It will be the same Archie, the same Veronica and Betty but with a desi twist… Fans can now expect to see Archie and Veronica dance on the popular ‘Aakhon ki gustakhiyaa’ or see the gang sing some popular songs like the college classic ‘Purani jeans’ and the classic oldie ‘Kankariya maar ke jagaya’ among others.” The company plans to launch 12 Archie titles in the first phase and 36 titles within the coming year. The 12 titles of the first phase will include seven on the Archie-Betty-Veronica marriage saga. This change has received mixed reactions from Indian fans with the majority not finding it a comic relief! Sindhu Balram, a student of media studies says: “Classics must be left the way they are. Tamper with them; innovate too much, and even the existing fan base is bound to decrease. I’ve grown up reading Archie comics and the storyline, settings and jokes being typically American are what make these comics loved by all. Archie Comics cannot be Indianised.” The stereotypes that exist in the series are again quintessentially American. “I really wonder what Betty would be like. Sometimes she is the clichéd dumb blonde but

jokes like these will just not make sense in a vernacular language,” opines Mohan Sivaram, an advertising professional. “I cannot imagine Archie, Betty and Veronica running around trees and dancing in the rain to Bollywood songs. Some of us detest these things in the films we watch, imagine having to see the same in a comic book. This change spells doom,” says Tanisha Fernandes, a collegian. Yashas Mitta who works for a leading comic book company opines: “I’m a little sceptical about desi-ising such cult stuff. None of such ventures in the past have really gone down well with the Indian audience. A lot of humour is usually lost in translation, however good the translation is. But if they do manage to strike the right chord, it’ll be great. Although, I’m very excited to see how the ‘desi’ version will look/ sound/feel, only time will tell how good it turns out.” He adds: “Today, comics are no means to an end. They are just the beginning of creating a certain culture. It’s definitely warming to see Archie come home because it shows that Indian fans are being taken seriously.” While Archie fans have much to grapple with already, all we can ask is “next is what”? Betty and Veronica draped in transparent saris with revealing cholis, Juggie wolfing down a plate of steaming hot samosas, or Archie and his ultimate lady love doing the saath phere, perhaps? - Hindu
