New Opportunities Lure Indians, Chinese Back Home

A new study released by the Kauffman Foundation, led by Director of Research Indian American Vivek Wadhwa who interviewed 153 skilled immigrants who went to India and 111 who went to China to start new companies. The returnees are most happy about the vibrant economies of India and China that is growing at a fast pace (Photo: Saja)

WASHINGTON (MM): Thanks to economic opportunities back home and a deeply flawed US immigration system, skilled immigrants from India and China are now leaving the US in droves, according to a new study. Other factors include access to local markets and a desire to be closer to family and friends, according to the survey report “The Grass is Indeed Greener for Entrepreneurs in India and China”, released Thursday by Kauffman Foundation. Led by Indian American Vivek Wadhwa, director of research at Duke University, the research team surveyed 153 skilled immigrants who had returned to India to start companies and 111 who went back to China. More than 60 percent of Indian and 90 percent of Chinese returnees said the availability of economic opportunities in their countries was a major factor in their return, the survey noted. While 78 percent of Chinese

were lured by the attraction of local markets, so were 53 percent of Indians. And 76 percent of Indians and 51 percent of Chinese said it was family ties that brought them back home. S u r p r i s i n g l y, 72 percent of Indian and 81 percent of Chinese returnees said that the opportunities to start their own businesses were better or much better in their home countries. Speed of professional growth was also better back home for the majority of Indians (54 percent) and Chinese (68 percent). And the quality of life was better or at least equal to what they’d enjoyed in the US for 56 percent of Indians and 59 percent of

Chinese. Among Indians, the strongest common advantage to entrepreneurs who had moved home was lower operating costs; among Chinese, it was access to local markets. In India, 77 percent ranked operating costs and 72 percent ranked employee wages as very important advantages; in China, 64 percent and 61 percent did. In China, 76 percent ranked access to local markets as very important. In India, 64 percent did. Optimism about the country and economy also made a big difference. Indians and Chinese both (55 percent and 53 percent, respectively) saw the mood in their countries as a very important advantage. The only advantage respondents typically indicated that the US offered was in the salaries received - 64 percent of Indian and 43 percent of Chinese respondents said the salaries had been better in the US than they were at home.

What are your comments? Have people you know been leaving for India for better opportunities, buying lands and building new homes to start a new life for their families? Please do send us your comments to reinforce this study, or otherwise, send your comments to: indoamericannews@yahoo.com

Iconic Comedian Moin Akhtar Passes Away KARACHI (Dawn): He was a comedian par excellence, but his last act left an entire nation in tears. Iconic comedian and actor Moin Akhtar died of a heart attack on Friday. He was 60. He is survived by his wife, two daughters and three

in classics like Studio 2½ and Studio Poney Teen in which Moin Akhtar did the part of one of the interviewees and Anwar Maqsood the interviewer. Akhtar’s zany but meaningful answers to Anwar Maqsood’s ostensibly innocuous questions

He portrayed the personality of a self-obsessed poet who had a past (and a nagging wife) that he seldom liked to remember. The acting was right out of the top drawer and intelligently complemented the script. Moin Akhtar and Anwar

sons. Born in 1950, Moin Akhtar joined show business in the ’60s as a comedian. His remarkable impersonations and rib-tickling skits earned him recognition in no time. But it was in the ’70s that Moin Akhtar’s appearance on the Zia Mohyeddin Show as a standup act catapulted him to national fame. This writer still remembers as a child listening to an audiocassette, which sold like hot cakes in the ’70s, in which Moin Akhtar presented a series of impersonations and soundeffects, along with a humorous sketch of a villager who tries to copy an urbanite and in the process behaves like a nincompoop. The fame was soon followed by critical acclaim when Moin Akhtar joined hands with humourist Anwar Maqsood and did a host of shows with him. Beginning with an episode of Angan Terha in which Moin Akhtar played the role of a poet looking for a place to live, the duo came up with one gem after another. The combination resulted

created a magic the kind of which was never witnessed on Pakistani television. Comedienne Bushra Ansari also became part of their group and they did some memorable shows together. Moin Akhtar didn’t confine his talent to comedy acts. He proved his versatility by playing the protagonist in a long-play Rozy written by Imran Aslam and directed by Sahira Kazmi. Moin Akhtar did the part of a man who assumes the garb of a woman in order to find employment. His performance was not only appreciated in Pakistan but even across the border it earned him a great many fans. Rozy was an adaptation of a successful Hollywood film Tootsie. On his inevitable comparison with Tootsie’s star Dustin Hoffman, Moin Akhtar often claimed that he never saw the film until after he’d done the play. T h e l a t e a c t o r ’s a n o t h e r outstanding performance was witnessed in a play Half Plate, written by Anwar Maqsood and directed by Mohsin Ali.

Maqsood’s duo had become so inseparable that even after the advent of satellite TV they were asked by different channels to work together. Their last show as the writer-actor combo was Loose Talk which ran for many years and Moin Akhtar assumed hundreds of characters in it. These days a drama serial featuring Moin Akhtar as the main character is on air on a local private channel. Apart from a worthy body of work on television, Moin Akhtar acted in a few films, including Tum Sa Nahin Dekha and Mr Tabedar. His theatre performances alongside Umar Sharif in stage dramas like Buddha Ghar Pe Hai were also a commercial success. In recognition of his talent and work the government had bestowed on Moin Akhtar the Sitara-i-Imtiaz and Pride of Performance award. The actor’s namaz-i-janaza will be held on Saturday after Zohr at Masjid-i-Toheed in DHA Phase II, Malir Cantt.

How People Remember Moin Akthar fondly: “An excellent entertainer,a great human being ,his sad and sudden death shocked every one.People like Moin Akhtar born once.Moin Bhai we always remember you in our prays, when ever we offer surahe-Fateha to our dears ,will also take your name.May God bless your soul and place in heaven.Ameen.” - Nawab Hussain “I am deeply saddened by the demise of this Icon of theater, comedy and acting. This world will not be the sane without him. This is an unbelievable loss —-he was an institution in acting and was widely respected, acknowledged and admired for his unmatched wit, comedy and artistry. There will not be another Moin Akhtar and I will always miss him” - Asad Amir “Moin Akhtar we will miss u alot … can’t stop my tears” - Haya Usman

Business House Hopes to Bring Tata Nano to Pakistan’s Roads

ISLAMABAD (ET): The Tata Nano, the world’s cheapest car, could be cruising on Pakistani roads if the governments of India and Pakistan remove bottlenecks standing in the way of joint ventures and investments between the two countries. The International Multi Group of Companies, a Pakistani business house with interests in areas as diverse as edible oil and film imports, has expressed an interest in importing vehicles from India’s mammoth Tata Group, including the Nano and CNG buses. “We already have a letter of intent with the Tata Group as we were interested in their CNG buses. At a later stage, if restrictions in the trade policies of both India and Pakistan are removed, we are interested in bringing the Nano to Pakistan,” IMGC Global Chairman Amjad Rashid said. IMGC’s plans to import CNG buses from Tata have been held up due to restrictions in Pakistan’s trade policy, which allows the

import of only a limited number of vehicles and makes it mandatory for a majority of vehicles to be assembled within the country. At the same time, the Reserve Bank of India’s policies do not allow joint ventures and investments in Pakistan. “We raised these issues with Indian Commerce Secretary Rahul Khullar when he was in Islamabad last month for talks with the Pakistani Commerce Secretary and he promised to get these restrictions removed,” Rashid said. Rashid said his group, which has an annual turnover of about USD 200 million, is keen on bringing the Nano into Pakistan. “That is the ultimate objective. We already have a letter of intent. Once the bottlenecks are removed, we would import the CNG buses and the next step would be the Nano,” he said. IMGC, one of Pakistan’s largest manufacturers of edible oil, is also interested in collaborating in other sectors with the Tata Group,

including technology, Rashid said. The group is also Pakistan’s largest importer of Indian films. “We brought in 30 Indian films last year and we have signed for 15 more films this year. We are also about to conclude a deal for digital film technology, which will remove the need for importing film prints as movies will be brought in as digital files,” Rashid said. A Tata Group delegation that visited Pakistan about two years ago had held meetings with several senior officials and leaders, including the Industry and Commerce Secretaries and Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif. The delegation had even expressed interest in donating some CNG buses to Pakistan. H o w e v e r, the Tata Group backed off on business

ventures with Pakistan after the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, when a group of militants targeted several locations in India’s financial hub, including the iconic Taj Mahal Palace Hotel owned by the Tatas. The recent resumption of the India-Pakistan peace process has

given a boost to several business proposals between the two countries that are in the pipeline. IMGC Global chairman Rashid was among the Pakistani businessmen who participated in several meetings held during Commerce Secretary Khullar’s visit to Pakistan to discuss ways to increase trade cooperation, including permission for joint ventures and investment. Pakistani traders are looking at India as a key market for their products like cement and textiles, while India is being seen as a provider of low-cost technology and products like the Nano, which was launched in 2008 with a price tag of Rs 1 lakh ($2500).

India’s New Satellite Beams High Quality Images BANGALORE (MM): India’s latest advanced remote sensing satellite Resourcesat-2 has beamed high quality images distinctly showing the northern and western regions of the country, the space agency said Monday. Select images were presented to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Monday in New Delhi by ISRO Chairman K. Radhakrishnan. “The sophisticated cameras on board Resourcesat-2 were operated April 28 and its high quality imageries showing Delhi, Bareilly (in Uttar Pradesh), Surat (in Gujarat) and Dubai in the Gulf region were beamed to our ground stations,” the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) said in a statement here. The 1.2-tonne Resourcesat-2 was launched April 20 by a polar satellite launch vehicle (PSLV-C16) from Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh, about 80 km north-east of

Chennai. A team of space scientists from the space agency’s centres involved in the mission were present when the prime minister reviewed the satellite images. “The prime minister appreciated the success of the launch mission, which deployed Resourcesat-2, an IndoRussian satellite Youthsat and X-sat satellite from Singapore into orbit precisely. “The prime minister was also briefed about our forthcoming space missions,” the statement added. Resourcesat-2 is the 18th remote sensing satellite, which coincided with the 18th successful launch of the PSLV rocket, the workhorse of the Indian space programme and applications. According to ISRO director S. Satish, the cost of the rocket was Rs.90 crore and that of the lower orbital satellite Rs.140 crore. ($300M)

IMAX Targets India, China and other Economies for Rapid Expansion

By Richard Verrier LOS ANGELES (Baltimore Sun): The Canadian big-screen theater company has targeted nations such as China, Russia, Brazil and India for future growth. In foreign markets, the per-screen revenue tends to be substantially higher than in North America. A historic agreement between Imax Corp., the big-screen theater company, and Wanda Cinema Line, the largest theater operator in China., valued at $100 million, calls for opening 75 theaters in the country over the next three years. It represents the first revenue-sharing arrangement of its kind in China for Imax. The Canadian company, which has offices in Toronto and New York and a large operation in Santa Monica, has been aggressively expanding its business not only in China but in Russia, Brazil, India and other emerging economies as well. Rising middle classes have more disposable income are hungry for American entertainment. In the last three years, Imax’s global theater network has expanded nearly 80% to 528 theaters, including 201 in foreign markets, where the per-screen revenue tends to be substantially higher than in North America, thanks to strong consumer demand and higher ticket prices. An Imax ticket costs more than $20 in countries such as Brazil and Japan, compared with about

$15 in the United States. The company plans to open at least 100 theaters annually for the next several years. “ We a r e s i g n i f i c a n t l y underpenetrated in the international markets,” said Imax Chief Executive Rich Gelfond. “The addition of Imax theaters in those markets will

Empire Aviation Group to Begin Operations in India KOZHIKODE, KERALA (ITN): Empire Aviation Group (EAG), a Dubai-based private aviation specialist and operator of one of the West Asian’s largest managed fleets of business jets, has announced plans to start operations in India, with the

opening of a new branch office in Mumbai by mid-2011. The new branch — the company’s first operational base outside Dubai — will eventually offer the full range of Empire Aviation Group services in the subcontinent and will have an initial focus on aircraft sales and management. The announcement was timed to coincide with the inaugural Kerala Aircraft Static Display Show 2011 held in Kozhikode where the company

will have an exhibit highlighting its range of aviation services and featuring a Hawker 800XP business jet that EAG is marketing on behalf of its owner. Steve Hartley, Executive Director at Empire Aviation Group, said this is the right time to enter the Indian aviation market, as private jet registrations have continued to rise strongly over the last three years. “Market reports suggest that there are around 130-140 private jets currently based in the market, covering all the major manufacturers. The market opportunity is especially attractive for our aircraft management services, in which we take owners’ aircraft onto our mixed fleet and manage, operate and charter them on behalf of the owner. “We believe there is also good potential for new and preowned aircraft sales, in a market which is clearly recognizing the benefitsofprivate aviation and as the aviation infrastructure develops rapidly to accommodate and support this trend,” he said.

EAG’s Mumbai branch will be staffed by a local team trained at its headquarters in Dubai and the company expects the branch to begin operations with a small

initial fleet of managed aircraft based in the market. “Our clear aim is to emulate the success we have achieved in the Middle East, where we have become one of the region’s largest specialists in the short time since starting operations in 2007,” Hartley said. “EAG now manages one of the region’s largest mixed fleets of business jets, currently more than 20 aircraft. We believe this is an exciting emerging market for private aviation,” he said.

Legacy.” About 40% of Imax’s box-office revenue from such films derives from international ticket sales. Digital technology has spurred Imax’s rapid overseas growth. Imax developed a digital print system in 2008, eliminating hefty costs to distribute 70-millimeter film prints, costing $50,000 each. About two-thirds of Imax theaters use digital projectors, making it easier and more efficient to deliver prints worldwide and coordinate the release of movies in multiple languages and territories. The circuit enjoyed record profit in 2010, but saw a sharp slowdown both in ticket sales and attendance in the first quarter because of a dearth of hits and none that matched the popularity of the 3-D blockbuster “Avatar.” Imax reported a first-quarter loss of $1 million, compared with a profit of $26.5 million in the prioryear period. Revenue fell to $45.2 million from $72.8 million in the first quarter of 2010. Investors have responded favorably to Imax’s performance, sending shares up 23% this year amid assurances from company executives that business will bounce back this summer with a stronger slate of movies and growth in countries such as China. Some analysts have expressed concern that Imax faces growing competition from Beverly Hills-

based RealD, which supplies 3-D equipment and licenses big-screen technology used by some major theater chains. Others have cited potential challenges that Imax could confront in emerging markets like India, which heavily favors Bollywood films over Hollywood. China’s Imax has 45 theaters, with more on the way. It will have 177 theaters in China by 2015. Imax spent years laying the groundwork for its deal with Wanda, moving its Asian studio to China from Singapore, opening an Imax theater at a science center in Pudong and partnering with a studio in Shanghai to release a movie about panda bears. The company also is distributing popular Chinese films in China and abroad, including a movie about the founding of China’s Communist Party. “What we did is went in really early and became a part of the Chinese moviegoing culture for Hollywood films,” said Greg Foster, Imax’s president of filmed entertainment. Another key market for Imax is Russia, which will have 50 Imax theaters by 2014 and is experiencing a box-office boom. Ticket sales industrywide in Russia have grown from $3 million a year in 1993 to more than $1 billion last year. Imax theaters are generating twice as much revenue there — about $3 million per screen annually — than in North America.

MOTHER! Endless Love and Gracious Giving By Uma Medi Mama. Mommy. Mother. Uttered by the lips of a young child, these are the sweetest words that can grace a mother’s ears. A woman’s journey into motherhood is one of incessant, everlasting and unconditional love for her children. Are there a more exuberant prizes or riches? What gift is so precious and true as the unwavering love of a mother? The coziness and security in mother’s lap, the warmth in her touch and the nectar of her love is familiar for every child in this world – it is a gift to humanity. According to legend, there once lived an unselfish saint with a desire to see God. He went on a long and difficult penance, and eventually God decided to materialize himself in human form (Darshan). The saint experienced God’s eternal bliss and heavenly love, and asked of Him one final request, “O Lord, please grant every human being the same wish and let them experience your presence and heavenly love.” God replies, “my child I have already granted that gift, for every

human being can see me in their mother each and every day. One can experience my heavenly love through their mother’s love.” Mother carries the child in her womb, creating the being with her own flesh and blood. After the child is born she nourishes the child in her

lap and always keeps the child close to her heart. Without hesitation she relinquishes her worldly desires, and the life of her child is entangled and sowed deeply onto her own – like two colors of paint slowly mixing.

She cheers at every gleeful moment and every step of her child. Every word the child speaks is like blissful music. She controls each and every step, every utterance and every grain of rice that touches the child’s sweet lips. In hard times, the mother’s countenance never falters. Her poise and determination to remain strong and shield her children from hardship is as true as light. And she demands nothing in return. For a mother, there is no feeling more beautiful than seeing her once small child become the person she had always envisioned. Even after birth, mother is the warm and nurturing vessel that guides and carries the child into a state of wholeness and strength. When the child achieves, accomplishes and climbs – the greatest joy and exhilaration is felt by the mother. The universe thanks every mother for sharing with the world such Heavenly love. God bless every one. Indo American News prints this article to honor all the mothers out there who are doing an exceptional job of raising their children. We celebrate this week as Mother’s Week. This Week, That Age May 10, 1869 - At Promontory, Utah, California Governor Leland Stanford pounds in a ceremonial golden spike that completes the nation’s first transcontinental railway. After failing to hit the spike on his first attempt, Stanford raised the heavy sledgehammer again and struck a solid square blow. For the first time in American history, railways linked together east and west, the realization of a dream that began two decades earlier. May 10, 1996 - Eight climbers die on Mount Everest during a storm on this day in 1996. It was the worst loss of life ever on the mountain on a single day. Author Jon Krakauer, who himself attempted to climb the peak that year, wrote a best-selling book about the incident, Into Thin Air, which was published in 1997. A total of 15 people perished during the spring 1996 climbing season at Everest. Between 1980 and 2002, 91 climbers died during the attempt. May 13, 1898 - Thomas Edison sues the American Mutoscope Company, claiming that the studio has infringed on his patent for the Kinetograph movie camera. In Orange, Edison entrusted his assistant, W.L.K. Dickson, with the development of a new machine that could capture moving images. Dickson designed the Kinetograph, a camera that used celluloid film advanced by a sprocket that fit into square perforations running along the film, as well as the Kinetoscope, which projected moving images in a single-viewer peep-show format. Edison first publicly demonstrated the machine in 1891. In the lawsuit filed in May 1898, Edison accused a company of stealing his work; it was one of many infringement lawsuits he would file. In 1902, the U.S. Court of Appeals ruled that Edison did not invent the motion-picture camera, but allowed that he had invented the sprocket system that moved perforated film through the camera. May 13, 1981 - Pope John Paul II is shot and wounded at St. Peter’s Square in Rome, Italy. Turkish terrorist Mehmet Ali Agca, an escaped fugitive already convicted of a previous murder, fired several shots at the religious leader, two of which wounded nearby tourists. Agca was immediately captured. (History.com)

‘Raju’ Ban Gaya Gentleman?

By Roshni mUkheRjee Kolkata is certainly carving a filmi niche on the global map. We had told you that four students from Hamburg Media School, one of Germany’s mostrenowned film school, had shot for their graduation project, titled “Raju”, in the city. The latest on that is the film has been selected for the Cannes International Film Festival, apart from being “one of the last five films competing for the foreign Student’s Oscar/Academy Awards”. What’s more, “Raju” has also won the Special Jury Recognition Award and the Audience Recognition Award at the 20th annual Aspen Shortsfest 2011, besides making it to a host of other international festivals. To the uninitiated, the 20-minute film, has Stefan Gieren as the student producer and Max Zähle, Sin Huh and Florian Kuhn in charge of direction, camera and screenplay, respectively. While the foreign cast includes two of Germany’s renowned film personalities, Wotan Wilke Möhring and Julia Richter, the Indian association comes to the fore with Taranjit Kaur, Arindam Sil and a guy from one of the Hazra slums, Krish Gupta. An elated Taranjit, who is also the casting director of the same, says, “The film has been selected for the Cannes Short Film Corner. It feels great to know that a project shot in Kolkata has fared so well in the festival circuit.” The film is about a German couple essayed by Wotan Wilke Möhring and Julia Richter, adopting an orphan in Kolkata. I am praying that we get someone to sponsor Krish so that he can be a part of the Cannes visit. After all, it’s not just about the film, it’s also about securing a child’s future,” says Taranjit, keeping her fingers crossed. Here’s hoping Kolkata Cannes does it! Sri Lanka, Australia Bid for 2018 Commonwealth Games KUALA LAMPUR (Samachar): Australia touted its successful track record while Sri Lanka called for an opportunity to transform the nation after decades of civil war when they lodged formal bids on Wednesday to host the 2018 Commonwealth Games. Australia has hosted the games four times in various cities and wants to send the 2018 event to the glamorous Gold Coast. Gold Coast bid committee chairman Mark Stockwell said 80 percent of the infrastructure was already in place, but it expects to spend 1.7 billion Australian dollars ($1.8 billion) in public and private funds to build new venues and make other preparations. Hambantota, also on the coast in southern Sri Lanka, was the only other rival. Central Bank Governor and bid chairman Ajith Nivard Cabraal estimated an investment of 2.5 billion pounds ($4.1 billion) but said a successful bid will bolster Sri Lanka’s recovery from the 2004 tsunami and a 26-year civil war that ended two years ago. He dismissed concerns that Sri Lanka may face similar problems that marred the 2010 games in New Delhi such as graft, construction of delays and massive cost overruns. Hambantota has been undergoing major development projects including a new port, international airport and stadium for this year’s cricket World Cup. Most of the facilities, including a games village

Commonwealth Games Federation VP Tunku Imran

that will be part of a new university and six new hotels, will be in place by 2016 when Sri Lanka hosts the South Asian Games, he said. “We will be on budget, on time and quality assured,” Cabraal said. “The Commonwealth Games is going to be life-changing not just for one or two people but for the whole of Sri Lanka. It will give us the opportunity to come out of the difficulties that we have had and to

showcase our country.” With the theme “Together. From the heart,” Hambantota’s presentation depicted its rich culture with dancers in traditional outfits, drummers and singers. Gold Coast’s bid was presented by a 10-year-old schoolgirl, who highlighted the tourist region’s readiness to host the games and Australia’s promise of a world-class event. “A successful Gold Coast bid will ensure the games will thrive in new markets and reach younger generations,” said Queensland Premier Anna Bligh. Gold Coast proposes to hold the games in April 2018 during autumn school holidays, she said. Officials from both countries said they were confident of raising private funds to meet their investment target. Commonwealth Games Federation Vice President Tunku Imran said the successful bidder for the games, which features countries and states of the former British Empire, will be announced in November. Glasgow, Scotland will host the 2014 version.

A. R. Rahman Collaborates with Michael Bolton MUMBAI (IE): Academy Award Winner A.R.Rahman’s latest collaboration is with international pop star Michael Bolton who is set to release his 21st studio album titled ‘Gems - The Duets Collection’ on June 21, 2011. The new album will feature productions by acclaimed songwriters, producers and musicians including Gram my Award Winning Country Super Group, Rascal Flatts, International P o p S u p e r s t a r, Seal, Australian singing sensation, Delta Goodrem, the famed late vocalist Eva Cassidy and of course Academy Aw a r d w i n n i n g singer-composer A.R.Rahman. “It was an incredibly rewarding experience recording this album,” says Bolton . “The opportunity to work with legendary talent like David Foster, Dan Huff, A.R. Rahman and some of the absolutely greatest singers and recording artists in the entire world was inspiring. I can’t wait to share the special music we all created with the world.” “We heard that Michael wanted to write something with us. We all kept telling ourselves, ‘It’s like, Michael Bolton! Come on - he’s one of the

greatest singers on the planet,” says Rascal Flatts. “He wanted to get the whole band involved and make this thing really fresh and new. It was just so cool that we had a chance to get together and write this killer song called ‘Love is Everything.’” “When I first met Michael, we got to talking about music,

philosophy, the universe, and many things that we had in common,” shares A.R. Rahman. “I wanted Michael to do a bit of singing that he’s never done before, without compromising on his musicality.” Michael Bolton is gearing up for the release of his new album, Gems. Bolton is using the album as a platform to work with

artists from around the globe. So, it only seems natural that Mr. Bolton would want to recruit the help of Academy Award-winning composer AR Rahman. Apparently, Rahman has given Bolton a reworked version of his track “Sanja” from the film Couples Retreat. Although Rahman was originally supposed to sing the chorus on the track, Bolton will now be recording the entire track himself, including the chorus which is sprinkled with Hindi. The collaboration almost didn’t happen, as Rahman was committed to other projects before being contacted by Michael. Rahman was originally asked to produce a completely new single for Bolton, but wasn’t able to meet Michael’s proposed deadline. Intent on working with Rahman, Michael asked the Oscar-winner for a song he could reinterpret on his album. Rahman gave Michael the right to use “Sanja”, and the rest is history! Productions by acclaimed songwriters, producers and musicians such as David Foster, Dann Huff and Rudy Perez are also featured in Bolton’s studio album by Sony Music/ Legacy Recordings.

Afterwards at La Vida, Gulshan Grover, star of the opening-night selection, “I Am Kalam,” asked the obvious question, “You have the people that say they love Indian film, they love Indian food, they

love Indian saris, but where are they?” Which he then answered: “This festival supports Indian film, and people show they support it by coming.” IFFLA’s Christina Marouda agreed. “The most gratifying thing is showing independent Indian filmmakers people would not otherwise see. The Bollywood stuff is great, but I love having first-time filmmakers who go on to make films that open the fest years later.”
