New y york Life Seeks to Expand, Targeting Asian Indian Community for Recruitment By Kalyani Giri HOUSTON: About three decades ago, Kulbuhusan “KB” L. Sareen fell on hard times. The restaurant he had optimistically purchased in the hope that it would make him a rich man, failed. Investment gone, and poised on the brink of filing for bankruptcy, he stopped by his insurance agent’s office at New York Life (NYL) to cash out his policy to keep his family afloat until he found a job. His agent advised Sareen to consider a career with New York Life. And the rest, as they say, is history. He joined the company in 1984 and rapidly rose within the ranks. So effective was his performance that he won several accolades including the prestigious 2007 Pacific Zone Award of Excellence – Platinum. Hailed as a legend

in the industry, he has distinguished himself as the longest- tenured managing partner with NYL working out of the Greater San Francisco General Office. “It was the best decision I ever made,” Sareen confided to a roomful

of NYL executives, community leaders, and media at an outreach meeting and recruitment awareness drive held at India House on November 10, 2011. “If you have discipline and are prepared to work hard this is the best company for integrity and financial

strength. All our policies are written with purpose and we are there when the family needs us most. After all, life insurance is not about the dead, it’s about the living,” added Sareen. Addressing gatherees, Sareen exhorted them to direct the younger

generation seeking lucrative career opportunities to join NYL. The meeting began with an infor informal meet-and-greet reception where guests got to meet some of the top salesmen for NYL nationwide who had convened in this city to officially announce that NYL is expanding and looking to recruit agents within the Asian communities. Earlier in the day, local agents met at the same venue and expatiated on NYL’s strategy for the future. While many other companies are feeling the economic strain and downsizing, NYL employed 3, 433 in 2010. In attendance was New York-based Assistant Vice President of NYL, Srinivas R. Ranga; Ranga heads the Asian/Indian marketing management division nationwide. “The company is hiring and the person you refer to us will appreciate it his entire lifetime,” said Ranga. Local business entrepreneur, prolific community activist, and NYL Partner Ramesh Cherivirala, welcomed guests and recognized and introduced community leaders. Cherivirala, who came to the US with a doctorate in Organic Chemistry, joined NYL mere days preceding the catastrophic events of 9/11. Driven and hard-working, he made partner in 3 ½ years. He spoke of his experience working for NYL, a company that has been in existence for 165 years, and ranks no. 71 on the 2011 Fortune 100 list. NYL has over $200 billion in assets, and a $16.8 billion surplus and has received the highest ratings for financial strength currently awarded to any life insurer by all four ratings agencies. Cherivirala also told of the

company’s philanthropy. “The NYL Foundation contributed $11.25 million in 2010, largely to organizations benefitting children,” said Cherivirala. “NYL, through the education program Ekal Vidyalaya, supports 100 schools in rural and tribal areas in India. There is no better investment than our children.” He introduced Ekal Vidyalaya representative Subhash Gupta, who told gatherees that the funds help children in remote areas who have no access to schools. “We have to collect the children and take them to classes,” said Gupta. “We also train their parents in economic development and how to better their livelihood,” he said. It costs $365 to educate 30 children for one year, he added. Managing Partner at the Houston General Office, Brad Willson, moved to this city 6 years ago. He has worked for NYL for 26 years. “When people ask me how’s business, I smile and say ‘unbelievable!’. Sometimes business is great but there is a flip side,” said Willson. “NYL will show you the path to great success, you could even make your first million in two/three years, but you have to be committed and prepared to work hard to achieve your goals. And right now we are expanding and will absorb anyone fitting that criteria and wanting a great career opportunity,” he added.
