OVERVIEW

W

e know that many of you have

already set up a LinkedIn profile. If

you have not, this guidebook is for you to use. If you already have a LinkedIn profile, this would be a great time to make sure it is current with updated information.

LinkedIn is for individuals who are looking to expand their network and connect with

professionals inside and outside their field. This social media platform allows you to

build contacts within your field and gives

you the platform to promote yourself, Indoff, and products you sell. This guide will

take you step-by-step through the process of creating your profile.

SIGNING-UP Upon entering Linkedin.com, you will be welcomed by their home page. This page gives you access to

sign-up, search for jobs and people, post a job, and explore general info about LinkedIn.

On the top corner, right-side of the page, there will be a button for signing-in and for joining. You will click on “Join now.”

Sign in

You will be sent to a different screen. It is shown on the next page. A box will pop up and you will type in your email and come up with a password. Make

sure your password is at least 8 characters including

1 number or 1 special character. You will then click on “Agree & Join.”

After this step, it will ask you for your first and last

name. After typing that they will give you a security check. Follow along.

WELCOME Welcome to LinkedIn! This is the beginning of your

new profile. You will select which country you reside in as well as the postal code.

Next you will enter your most recent job title, most recent company, and your industry.

Your security is important to LinkedIn. With that being said, they will ask you to check your email for a

six-digit confirmation code. You can enter the code they give you on the LinkedIn page or you can just

click on the confirmation button below in your email.

You will see an example of what that email will look like on the next page.

Confirming through your email will open a new

page and will ask you to sign back into LinkedIn.

HOMEPAGE You have made it to the Homepage! Here you will

have access to your news feed, creating a post, your own profile, your network, messaging, and more!

Here is an idea of what your Homepage will look like to the right.

The more you explore your Homepage, the more you will get the hang of it. However, let’s continue to setup your profile.

To access your profile, you can click on the button

that says “me” on the top, right corner in the panel.

Once selected, click on “view profile.” Another way to access your profile is on the left-side of the Homepage. On the image on the next page, you will see a

rectangular box that says your name and your title. Click on your name.

PROFILE Welcome to your profile. This is where people will be able to learn about you! Your profile gives general

info such as your name, your location, your job title, and your contact info.

One of the first things you may want to set up is

adding a profile picture. According to LinkedIn, “People are more likely to visit profiles with a photo. Add

a photo to get up to 21x more profile views.” You can

add a profile picture by clicking on the camera on the left-side of your screen or by clicking on “Add profile section” then “profile photo.” You can then click on

the pencil icon if you need to edit basic information. Once that is complete, click on “Add profile section” and input information for: • ‘About’

• ‘Background / Experience’ • ‘Skills / Education’

• ‘Accomplishments’

• ‘Additional Information’ • ‘Supported Languages’

NETWORKING This is what LinkedIn is all about. Now that you are a

part of the LinkedIn Community, you have access to over 500 million different professional profiles. You will be

able to share your own ideas, your favorite articles, and more with the people in your connections.

Making connections is vital for your success within

LinkedIn. In the search box you can type in the names of people you have worked with or any professionals you

want to connect with. LinkedIn also offers recommendations for you based on your industry.

You can follow companies to keep up with what is

happening in their business as well; however, in order to connect with professionals, you must click ‘Connections’

on the left side of the page under ‘Manage my network.’ Here you will see lists of people who are in the same

industry as you or who you may know. Click, ‘connect’ and expand your network from there!

JOINING GROUPS LinkedIn Groups LinkedIn Groups are a great way to network and

promote yourself. These groups exist to bring like minded people together and take a lot of the

guesswork and sourcing out of the process. Rules

and guidelines differ between each individual group so be sure to check the rules before posting. Some allow for promotion and sales as where others are

more for networking and positioning yourself as a knowledgeable expert. Social media isn’t always

about being pushy with sales, sometimes providing great information is the key needed to prove you have the knowledge and experience for the job. You can access LinkedIn groups by going to the

sidebar on the left that says, “Manage my network” on the “My Network” page. Then click on “Groups.”

MESSAGING Frustrated that you want to contact someone but don’t

have an email? LinkedIn messaging allows you to reach out to connections even if you don’t know their email.

Near the center of the top panel, you will see a button

for messaging. After clicking on it, you will see that the messaging dashboard is similar to an email format but less formal.

There are some basic norms you must consider when using messaging. Some of the top things that are

important to keep in mind are hard sales, being too

personal, or irrelevant topics. Remember that LinkedIn is a professional social media platform, therefore, sending a personal message can send the wrong signal. Try to keep personal messages to your primary email.

Once you have built your connections list, LinkedIn

sends notes about connections, job anniversaries, birth-

days, and when mentioned in articles. It’s appropriate to respond with a kind message in these cases.

Lastly, keep your content relevant. If you send someone something entirely off-topic, you will most likely be less valuable and considered spam. 22 | Indoff Incorporated
