Dear Parents, Now more than ever, there are some great choices of international schools in Indonesia, whether you’re in Bali, Jakarta, or anywhere else in Indonesia. Choosing the right school for your child is always going to be tough, and when you’re a foreign parent in a diverse country like Indonesia, that decision can be even more of a challenge. Choosing the school that best fits your child, his or her academic abilities, skills, and aspirations, is going to cause anxious times. The right school is going to propel your child towards lifelong learning, the right college or university education, and ultimately a successful career with worldwide options. A school that will work with your children as they grow, that will nurture their talents, and reflect the way you are raising them is the goal when selecting where to send them. That’s why this Education Guide is so important to helping you understand what schools you are able to choose from. With all the different things that you might want to look for, such as the curriculum or the after-school activities, this guide is going to set you on the right path for your seemingly arduous search. Interviews are a great way for us to learn more about your child and to assess their attitude, sense of personal responsibility and motivation. They also provide an opportunity for you to learn more about ACG School Jakarta! Interviews are carried out by the principal or a senior member of the administration, and take approximately half an hour. Prior to the interview, families supply us with copies of current school reports, results of any external examinations and qualifications gained (where applicable). 21ST CENTURY TEACHER BY PETER ARAMAN
The academic world is filled with articles and advocates of STEM, STEAM, flipped classrooms, online learning, technology in the classroom and many more similarly themed topics. Although each is important to 21st century teaching and curriculum development, there is one vital topic that is not given its due; the changing role of our teachers! I ask everyone in education from board members to headmasters to teachers, parents and students to ponder one simple question. What makes a teacher IMPACTFUL in today’s world as compared to when you yourself were a ten-year-old student?
many areas of life, most notably in the professional workplace when an “old hand” takes on a new employee, helping during the transition to a new environment. Given the world’s ever growing complexities, choice availability, impact of technology and the myriad of images, videos, and tools of communication, students seemingly have never had it so good, with knowledge and endless opportunities floating above within easy grasp.
As a principal working in the international community for the better part of my adult life, I will answer the question with just one word: mentorship.
Metaphorically the number of dots that need connecting for our children has grown exponentially in recent years. Mentoring/guiding students to connecting their own unique collection of dots is where I believe that a teacher can make the greatest positive impact to learning and character development.
The concept of mentoring dates back to ancient Greek civilization and was originally described by Homer as “The Wise and Trusted Counsellor.” In today’s society the concept has made its way into
The tenet of mentorship is based on a relationship of trust and mutual understanding built over time through shared experience. Dr. Pamela Cantor, founder of “Turnaround for Children”
26
reiterated the importance of mentoring in a child’s development, saying “mentors serve as a thought partner for students on their life journey and empower students to become agents of their own change and development through the understanding of students’ aspirations and fears.” This depth of impact that teachers can achieve is also greatly aided by building relationships or developing a contextual understanding of a student’s home life through regular shared experiences outside of the classroom. Student advantages to having this added significant relationship to their lives are many, including; • The ability to chart a more personalised/ individualised learning journey • Developing a real sense of self-worth and meaning and purpose in life • Allowing passions to flourish and exploration of interests through platforms within a school system or within a community • Enabling students to develop a much higher degree of resiliency and internal value system by being there in a supportive role when the inevitable mistakes are made The “elephant in the room” so to speak is the undeniable fact that teachers, same as the rest of us, only have 24 hours in a day, and have their own family commitments and life dreams they want to pursue. It would be unfair to everyone involved to keep the past model of a teacher’s workday/workload and just ADD this major layer of time and commitment to it. In order for the positive impact of mentoring to take hold, a few fundamental changes must occur in the mindset of stakeholders in our educational system/school. The most difficult shift is for stakeholders not to base their teacher compensation packages and or reward system/teacher reviews on the exam results of their students. Most schools do in fact employ this as a major factor in evaluating or hiring teachers and by doing so naturally create a culture where impactful mentoring would be difficult to take root.
Complementing this much needed shift from school administrators is the important task of making parents aware through seminars, discussion, invited speakers and actual real world data, that the skill sets needed for their own children as they enter young adulthood are radically different to the ones they themselves needed when they finished their education. For example, emerging technologies and collaborative problem solving are already seen as essential tools for graduating students. Entrepreneurship, long looked at as a niche skill set, is in demand for large, medium and small organisations across all sectors, in the developing and developed world alike. Without parents on board with the “why” it becomes impossible to implement the “how” and “what.” I could go on forever, but will wrap up with one last important shift needed, that being the role, organisational structure and place of schools in society in general. Who said that school-based learning needs to take place between 7am and 4pm Monday to Friday? Why not have a school that is open seven days a week from 7am to 9pm with a flexible workforce of teacher mentors to support the variety of needs and learning opportunities available? Just as we are asking through mentorship for a bigger seat at the instilling values/character building table, so should educators be inviting parents for a big seat at the learning table! Definitely more difficult to implement but it is very doable provided the organisation is equally flexible with its human resources policies. Going back to our question at hand regarding a positively impactful teacher in today’s world, getting an A in Math in this world is a common achievement for millions of students every year; encountering a young adult full of passion for learning, integrity, empathy and respect for others is altogether too rare. Isn’t it time we did something about that?

Curriculum Located conveniently in Kemang, Jayakarta Montessori School is devoted to the education of children 1.5 to 11 years of age, and has developmentally appropriate programs that foster creativity, self-confidence and a natural love for learning. Guided by skilled Montessori-trained teachers in English-speaking classrooms, we promote children’s physical, social, emotional and mental development, thus providing an excellent foundation for life in larger schools. The preschool focuses on practical life skills, motor skills, math and reading readiness, and social awareness. There is a focus on independence: a child’s ability to dress and feed his/herself, put things in their proper place, and share with friends and peers, all while fostering a good attitude towards learning and adapting to the school routine. The elementary curriculum is international in scope and includes science, social studies, arts, language and math. Children leave the primary school with a broad ability and knowledge that prepares them for the educational challenges ahead. We are open for enrolments and inquiries all year, so please drop by anytime. You may visit during preschool hours in order to observe a classroom and some activities, 8am–12pm, Monday– Friday. Strategies to Enhance Students’ Engagement in the Classroom BY MS. ZAIDA PUYO (GRADE 2 LEVEL HEAD, BINUS SCHOOL SIMPRUG)
Engagement activities are contributory factors to a successful learning atmosphere. If properly implemented in the classroom, they increase students’ attention, motivate them to practice higher-level critical thinking skills and promote meaningful learning experiences. Engagement activities can be supported by creating a toolbox that contains different strategies that make the lessons more alive and productive. These strategies are not only commonly used in the classroom but they are also research-based and their findings are significantly noticeable in the learning process. These research-based strategies include the following: 1. The Magic Wand. This engagement strategy provides evidence that are sufficiently active among students. Their comments become more sophisticated over time as more connections to ideas are made (Engle & Constant, 2002). Research and Teaching Hints • Repetition of ideas is observed. Students are cued to point out similarities in responses using appropriate language expressions. • Suggested prompts for the students: My idea is similar to/related to …; my idea is built upon… Process • The teacher extends one arm and slowly moves across the classroom. • The teacher goes around the class allowing students to share ideas. 2. Think-Write – Pair Share. This strategy increases the quality of student responses and gives them time to reflect; information is stored in long-term memory (Mohs, 2009). This was developed by Lyman (1981) to encourage students’ classroom participation.
46
Research and Teaching Hints • Writing down the students’ responses fosters accountability. • Appropriate language expressions are encouraged between partners. • Suggested prompts for the students: My partner clarified that… mentioned that…; we agreed on… Process • Think: Students are given quiet time to THINK about a response. • Write: Students WRITE the answer to the question independently. • Pair: Students are cued to PAIR with a seatmate and discuss their responses, noting similarities and differences. • Share: After reflecting with a partner, students are invited to SHARE with the class. 3. Talking Chips. This strategy uses any kind of game token, an eraser, slip of paper or any other small tangible item. This was introduced by Kagan (1988). Research and Teaching Hints • Encourages the “blurters” to hold their tongues and the “laggers” to think ahead (Canine & Kammeenui, 2006) • Promotes equal participation among groups • Best implemented when there are multiple answers to a question and all learners can cooperate 4. Ambassadors. This strategy expects everyone in the group to answer the questions following the discussion. The structure of ambassadors comes from “Number Heads Together” and is derived from the work of Kagan (1989). Research and Teaching Hints • Inquiry is natural and continuous and leads to thoughtful and reflective exploration and ideas (Costa & Kalick, 2000).
• Lower achievers gain confidence. • Students are more willing to take risks and share ideas. • Suggested prompts for the students: “We predicted a very different outcome; our reaction was similar to…” Process • Teacher asks a series of questions, one at a time. • Students discuss possible answers to each question with teammates for a specific amount of time depending on the complexity of a task. • Students “put their heads together” in order to solve the problem and ensure that everyone in the group can answer the question. • The teacher randomly calls students with the specific number to answer as ambassador on behalf of their team. • Students are encouraged to acknowledge similarities and differences between their team’s
information and build meaning from the text by analysing the author’s purpose in writing (Beck, McKeown, Hamilton & Kucan,1997) Guide questions • What is the author’s message? • What does the message mean? • How is the message connected to you as a reader? • Does the connection make sense to you? • Do you think the message is what the author tells us? Prove answer from the text. Process • Teacher presents written content to the students. • Teacher allows students to use the guideline to Question the Author. In implementing these strategies, students will take an active part in their own learning and their ideas are valued.
5. Questioning the Author. This strategy encourages the students to interact with

Curriculum We apply our proprietary curriculum and also certified early childhood education curriculum from USA. Learn from the Start: Starting from 1 year old until 3 years old, we apply this curriculum which focuses on important early childhood milestones. LifeSmart: We recognise that every child learns differently and every child is smart. That’s why our curriculum is inspired by Howard Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences theory. It provides opportunities for children to develop their minds and abilities through different approaches, materials, and experiences. Second Step: Social-emotional skills are just as important as learning reading or math and are essential for success in school, work, and life. Second Step is a social emotional curriculum from USA, designed specifically for early childhood education. Grow Fit: A healthy body nurtures a healthy mind. Our GrowFit program emphasises healthy snacks in classrooms and daily physical exercise. STEM: Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics can be taught from a very early age and helps children excel in logical thinking.
