This is the time of year when many of us make ourselves promises. Those who drink alcohol may vow to give up for a month or even forever. Many will promise themselves that this is the year they will get healthy by going to the gym and/or giving up smoking . Certainly many gyms see a surge in memberships during January each year! But generally the new year is a time of reflection and introspection when people take a look at where they are in their lives and make plans for where they want to be. Whatever promises you made to yourself and whatever changes you decided to make, I hope the year ahead brings you everything you desire. You will certainly be seeing some changes at Indonesia Expat as we learn from the past and make plans for an even better and brighter future. We asked Kenneth Yeung to have a look back at his favourite hoaxes of 2018, and his regular scams column is also featured inside. Duncan Graham has a look back at some of the highlights and lowlights of 2018, and also gives a few thoughts on what 2019 may bring.

BUSINESS PROFILE
Tampah Hills: A Sustainable Investment in Lombok year. It will be around 120-150 villas when the whole development is completed. Approximately half of the development will be recreational areas, with parks, gardens, walkways and lookout points. We are actively working to increase the biodiversity of the area and strengthen the natural vegetation. What types of villas do you offer? Can customers design their own? Investors are free to design their own dream villas using Tampah Hills’ architectural team or to bring in a team of their own. There is however a building covenant in place, meaning that we restrict the design of the villas in height and also in size relative to the lot. A maximum of 30 percent of each lot can be built. This is important to increase privacy for our investors and to increase the feeling of living in nature at Tampah Hills. The goal is that when you look at Tampah Hills from a distance, it will merge with the natural landscape.
Tampah Hills is one of Lombok’s newest and most exciting developments. To find out more about it, we spoke to Jakob Johansson, CEO and Founder of Tampah Hills, to talk about the development and why you should invest: What is Tampah Hills and what is the idea behind it? Tampah Hills will be a sustainable society in the south of Lombok for investors, entrepreneurs and creatives to live and network in paradise surroundings, in tune with nature and the local community. Who is the team behind Tampah Hills? What is your background? Tampah Hills is founded and developed by a strong and experienced entrepreneurial team with a mix of skill sets, backgrounds and experiences, including 20+ years of villa development in Indonesia and a strong focus on sales and marketing. The co-founders are Swedish, but have a lot of experience doing business in Indonesia. What makes Tampah Hills stand out from other developments? The location is ideal, with a pristine beach right in front of the development. It’s close to Kuta in South Lombok. Tampah Hills will feature 120-150 premium villas, a sports centre, restaurants, a co-working space, a pool, a skate park, a downhill mountain biking park and more. Approximately half of the total area will be private common areas for houseowners and visitors, with parks, vegetable gardens and flower gardens, and a natural amphitheatre. So it’s not only the land and the villa you’re buying, it’s also a whole community, “the Seaside Society”. Most
6

of the people that have bought land so far are young, successful entrepreneurs, and the average age of investors is around 30 years. It’s a fantastic chance to network with like-minded, successful people from across the globe. Finally and most importantly, Tampah Hills has a strong focus on sustainability. The plan is to be carbon neutral or even positive, by generating its own energy from renewable sources, optimising the whole development and making it extremely energy efficient, and of course to recycle and manage its own waste in the most responsible way possible. We are currently engaged in a major reforestation project where we are planting 20,000 trees in the area. We are also working closely with the local community, employing many locals from the neighbouring villages and offering very generous wages with pensions and insurances. Since we own all the land from the peak of Tampah Hills down to sea level, we control the flow and the quality of the water within the development, meaning that we can use and recycle a lot of the water. The water in Tampah Hills is already drinkable using just a basic filter and the goal is to be able to offer villa owners drinkable tap water. How big is the land and what are the plans for it? Tampah Hills is currently approximately 85 hectares, and we develop the land in stages. Currently we have launched stage one (a couple of lots still available) and stage two with a handful of lots still available. More stages are being launched later this year and over the coming years. We started the construction of the first villas in Q4 2018, with more villas being started this
What is the Seaside Society? What are the benefits upon joining? The Seaside Society is the community for all investors that have bought land and are building villas. The society will have huge leisure areas, sports areas, restaurants, parks and gardens. Some will be open to the public and some parts will be private for investors and guests only. When investing in Tampah Hills, you also invest in the society and access the network, where you can contribute and benefit as much or as little as you like. Since most investors are young and successful entrepreneurs, we are creating an entrepreneurial hub, where you can benefit from other investors’ skill sets, know-how and connections. So it’s a combination of unique business opportunities and a fantastic lifestyle. Can you tell us about Tampah Hills' efforts on Sustainable Development and Eco-restoration? We have a big reforestation team with Reville, our biologist, working together with 32 local employees, who takes care of plantations, parklands and all the forest areas. Our Green Team has planted 16,000 trees in our onsite nursery to preserve reforestation, increase the biodiversity and prevent flooding and landslides during the rainy season. Approximately 50 percent of the Tampah Hills area will remain green and contain parks, fruit and vegetable plantations and the original forest. Some of the planted trees will be used as both quality hardwood and softwood timber later in the building process. This means Tampah Hills has great potential for local and sustainable production of our own construction materials. Tampah Hills has its own water supply system with fresh water coming from the mountain flowing into different creeks. To make sure all villas and plantations will acquire water all year around, our teams in reforestation and our landscape architects are designing and building natural dams, wells and contour swales.
“Approximately 50 percent of the Tampah Hills area will remain green and contain parks, fruit and vegetable plantations and the original forest.”
What are the different investment opportunities with Tampah Hills? To start with, it’s a very attractive investment opportunity based on land and villa value, where Lombok will see strong appreciation ahead, especially where
Tampah Hills is located. Furthermore, Tampah Hills offers a very attractive business model, where investors can rent their villas while they’re away if they so wish, with full administration and marketing service from Tampah Hills, and excellent return on investment. We offer a secure model where investors can own their house through the Hak Guna Bangun (right to use the building) title, or alternatively invest through Tampah Hills. It’s a lower risk and hassle free way to invest in Indonesia, with excellent projected return on investment. What can customers gain when they choose to invest in Tampah Hills? An incredible lifestyle, excellent return on investment, a chance to contribute to a responsible and sustainable development, and access a world-class network of driven and successful entrepreneurs from all over the world.
During the construction phase a great deal of energy use occurs in the manufacture and distribution of the construction materials. We estimate the total carbon footprint from fossil fuels expended in the build will be offset by our reforestation of currently barren lands. We are planning to build a small recycling centre. We will offer this for public use and for all residents. This means less household waste will be burnt and released into the environment. We will educate the local community about sustainability and the importance of operating in an environmentally friendly way. Why did you choose Lombok as the location for your development? It’s a unique location, with good connections, lovely people and unspoiled environment This is just the right time to invest in Lombok, with a growing solid infrastructure and support to develop in a responsible way, and to avoid some of the negative effects of fast development seen in other locations in Indonesia.

UP CLOSE AN INTERVIEW WITH WORLD-FAMOUS ENGLISH SINGER
Engelbert Humperdinck
Have you ever been to Indonesia before? I have had the pleasure of visiting Indonesia many times. On one of those occasions, I had to leave my son and daughter behind and go on with the tour. My youngest boy had to have his appendix out in Jakarta! People were praying outside the hospital with candles.. but they thought he was Richie Sambora from Bon Jovi. What is your favourite song to sing on tour? What do the fans usually want to hear the most? I am fortunate to have 52 years of material to choose from when I make up my show. It’s hard to make the set list because I have had some amazing writers over the years and everyone has a different favourite. I would say Release Me and The Last Waltz are two songs that I could never let go from my show. I do love to sing a song from my recent CD release The Man I Want To Be. The song is called I’m Glad I Danced With You. It’s a duet written by my daughter and her partner Tony, and dedicated to my wife, who I met in a dance hall in the late 50s. What makes it even more special is that it is sung with my granddaughter Olivia, who is now ten but was only nine when it was recorded. It was a great success in the show and on public television in the States, where we just released a show which was filmed in Hawaii. How did you decide to name your tour after your song Angel On My Shoulder? I really have felt that I have had an angel follow me through life. There were times when I thought my time was up. Once in a tuberculosis hospital when I was a young man, six months of my life was spent watching others not make it in my ward. I fell in a timber pond as a really young boy and my brother saved me, not only from drowning, but also from the shark infested waters. I’ve also visited several places in the world where my story might have ended, but there was an angel looking out for me for sure. When I heard the song, it was as if the writer had lived and watched my life with me. I think it’s a great tour title… and lucky, I hope! As one of the longest-standing stars in the music industry, how do you think the industry has changed and how does it affect you? I’m so grateful that I was not a flash in the pan, a one-hit wonder. It takes a great team to get a career going and maintain it. I have worked hard all my life but the writers and that angel and the out of the blue TV appearance with

Release Me gave me the opportunity for a global career. (I replaced someone who had fallen ill. It was a show called Sunday Night at The London Palladium. The next day, Release Me started selling 80-100,000 a day). Now, anyone can have global interest in their music without leaving home due to technology, but I think the competition for the limelight is tougher. My audiences are my “spark plugs” and keep coming back for more, which is an amazing incentive to get out the front door!!
After a long career, can you give us your favourite show business anecdote? It’s a showbiz superstition that has held on throughout the years. If you whistle in my dressing room, you have to go out, turn around three times, use a slang phrase that is ever so slightly off colour, and kick the door before you are allowed back in. Don't try it but you can look up the dangers of whistling backstage during a show. Bad luck you know!

Bali Getting Tougher on Fugitives The resort island used to be a paradise for foreigners fleeing legal problems, but the risk of deportation is rising. BY KENNETH YEUNG
I
n days of yore, what was a person to do when wanted by police in the United States, Australia or Europe? Flee abroad, of course. If you couldn’t get to South America, then Southeast Asia was a popular destination, especially Bali, where you could blend in with tourists and pay for long-stay visas. These days, however, foreign fugitives arriving in Bali are likely to face arrest and deportation, especially those without deep pockets. Bali has been attractive to refugees since at least the 15th century. Back then, the fall of the Java-based Majapahit kingdom to emerging Muslim forces prompted many Hindus to move to the smaller island. Over the past 50 years, Bali has been a magnet for foreigners, not least because of its warm climate, low prices and friendly locals. Not of all its visitors are mere tourists. According to Australian author Kathryn Bonella’s 2012 book Snowing in Bali, endemic corruption means that many foreign drug dealers are living there as fugitives, some of them on false passports. Bali’s top police detective, Sugeng Sudarso, has acknowledged the resort island is a favourite destination for criminals wanted by Interpol. He says local police and Immigration have recently developed new measures, integrated with Interpol, to identify and monitor suspects coming from abroad.

CHHOTA RAJAN Indian mafia boss
The American music producer in 1984 founded hip-hop label Def Jam. In 2017, he faced multiple accusations of sexual assault and rape of women. In 2018, he resigned from his companies, began selling his properties and moved to Bali. He admitted “inappropriate conduct” in some instances, but denied allegations of nonconsensual sex. He could face trial this year, after a Los Angeles judge rejected his plea to have charges dismissed. Simmons says he has been in Bali to focus on yoga and meditation.
This Indian crime lord, whose real name is Rajendra Sadashiv Nikalje, is suspected of involvement in up to 17 murders. Born in 1959, he started out as a scalper of cinema tickets and rose through the ranks of the Mumbai underworld. He was placed on Interpol’s wanted list in 1995. He spent much of the next 20 years living abroad, including seven years in Australia. In October 2015, he arrived in Bali for a 15-day holiday, only to be arrested at the airport, after a tip-off from Australian police. He was deported to India in November 2015. In May 2018, he was sentenced to life imprisonment for masterminding the 2011 murder of a Mumbai journalist.
TERRENCE MURRELL British model and steroid dealer Murrell (30) was part of a gang that imported anabolic steroids from China and sold them online in the UK. Prosecutors alleged he made more than £220,000 from the supply of steroids, while the gang made a profit of £1.2 million in two years. Murrell had admitted to supplying a controlled drug and possession. When facing sentencing, he fled to Bali. A Welsh court in October 2018 sentenced him in absence to 37 months in jail. Murrell has since posted photos on social media of himself enjoying life in Bali.
VONTREY JAMAL CLARK Texas policeman Clark in 2012 joined the police force in Austin, Texas. His pregnant girlfriend, Samantha Dean, was murdered in February 2015. Clark had allegedly threatened to kill her after she refused to have an abortion. Clark flew to Jakarta, then Bali, where he stayed in a hotel in Kuta before renting a villa in Canggu. He was arrested there in July 2015 and handed to 13 FBI agents, who escorted him to Texas. He is due to go on trial in February 2019 and faces the death penalty.
According to local media reports, many of the foreign fugitives in Bali are from the Czech Republic, China, Russia, India, France, Japan and Australia.
ANTONINO MESSICATI VITALE Sicilian mafia boss
In 2018, Bali Police arrested at least ten foreigners under Interpol red notices (the equivalent of an international arrest warrant) for crimes including fraud, kidnapping, hacking and sexual assault. In 2017, 12 foreigners on Interpol’s red notice list were nabbed in Bali. Most were deported in the custody of law enforcers from their own country, rather than undergoing extradition, which is a time-consuming process requiring the president’s signature.
Vitale (born April 18, 1972) was chief of the Villabate mafia clan, just outside Palermo, the capital of Sicily. He inherited the job from his father, who was shot dead in 1988. In 2012, Vitale was wanted in Italy on charges of murder, extortion, human trafficking and arms trading. He escaped a police raid and fled to Bali. He spent six months in Legian, Kuta. He was arrested in the Nusa Dua resort area in July 2007, handed over to US agents and flown to Florida. In May 2008, he was sentenced to 25 years in jail for conspiracy, money laundering, and making false statements during a bankruptcy proceeding. He died in custody in 2016 at age 62 after suffering a stroke and a heart attack.
JULES BERNARD FLEDER US real estate scammer Fleder, a California businessman, from 2001 to 2004 ran a real estate development scam in which he and two associates swindled more than US$27.5 million from investors. When authorities started investigating, Fleder scarpered to Bali. He was arrested at a Denpasar hotel in February 2005 in a joint operation by Indonesia’s National Police, the US Bureau of Diplomatic Security and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). A day later, he was taken to the US territory of Guam. In November 2006, a Texas court sentenced him to ten years in jail and ordered him to repay his investors.

He spent at least six years in Bali, where he worked as a junior cricket development officer. He was arrested in February 2004 and deported in the custody of Australian police. Released from an Australian jail in July 2005 after serving out his sentence, he returned to Bali later that year, only to be ordered to leave. In 2006, he was arrested in Thailand and repatriated. The Magic Eels of Ambon BY STEPHANIE BROOKES life goes on. There was some pretty rigorous clothes washing action in progress, and the local women were chatting and going nonchalantly about their daily life next to the sacred pond, not seeming to be bothered by the giant egg-eating eels who were happily swimming very close to them. “The pond is fed by spring water which emerged hundreds of years ago”, Afandy told me. “Seven spears were thrown, along with a coconut – that is important. I don’t know why, but that is the way it was told to me by my grandfather”. He continued, “The spears went in different directions, and one special spear landed here where we are sitting now. That spear marked the spot of this spring. We call this pond Waaiselaka, which means water (waai) and silver (selaka) in our Melayu dialect.” The ceremony is held twice a year, once in January and at one other time set by the village council. Twice a year, the leader, who is called “the captain” locks the bridge so no traffic can get through. A key is attached to a special spear which is brought down from the neighbouring village of Tulehu (meaning "under the tree") and Liang village (meaning "under the ground"). The key holds special significance, a secret conveyed in a dream that Afandy’s grandfather had long ago.
O
n a sailing voyage through the Maluku Islands, I found myself in Ambon. The Portuguese sailed into these waters in the 16th century with their tall ships, on a quest to conquer the islands. They built forts and attempted to monopolise the spice trade, which was already well entrenched on the tiny island.
SeaTrek Sailing Adventures offer cruises through the Maluku Islands following the spice trade route. www.seatrekbali.com Flights: Jakarta to Ambon – Flying time is three hours 30 minutes. Daily flights operate. Ambon Island is part of the Maluku Islands of Indonesia. The central city and seaport of Ambon is also capital of Maluku province.
As I was exploring one of the forts, I struck up a conversation with a local who asked me if I had heard of the sacred eel that sometimes appears in a pond in a small village just outside of Ambon city. That was enough to pique my interest, and I headed off in search of Waai Village, which was around one hour’s drive along the coast from Ambon.
“Do not eat eel when you are in Ambon. It is believed that if you eat eel, your skin will turn into eel skin and will not look good. Everyone knows about that.”
On arrival in Waai, I managed to track down Afandy, the 18-year-old guardian of the pond, and he eagerly confirmed that not one, but two sacred eels visit the pond. He told me that this only ever happens after special holy rites have been performed. Afandy went on to explain how the village goes into lock-down twice a year. No outsiders are permitted to enter Waai Village during this time. A ceremony is held, and begins with seven spears being thrown by chosen village members. The ritual, which dates back hundreds of years, calls in the sacred eels. These appear on cue once all rites are conducted. Afandy told me, “I have been the guardian of the eels for eight years. My grandfather was the keeper before me. He was from the Alfur tribe, and originally came from the neighbouring island of Seram. He has been seeing the sacred eels since he was 20 years old. Now he is too old to continue his work.
12

He lives over there in the wooden house tucked away behind the trees, Afandy added, “My grandfather is very sick and so does not like to receive visitors”. Casually picking up a raw egg from a small basket near his feet, Afandy offered, “Here, have one of these”. He went on to explain how the “regular” eels love to eat eggs and how, through feeding and spending time
with them, over the years he has earned their trust. Afandy is known in the village as “the eel whisperer” and is very confident about getting in the water and having these huge eels, the size of a man’s arm, swim around him and take eggs from his hand. “I never get bitten because the eels know me well and we have a bond. I am pretty much safe. For you, I do not recommend you get in the pond.” He then proceeded to crack the top of the egg on a rock and wade out into the middle of the pond with the egg in hand. A long, shiny grey eel slithered up to him and promptly sucked the contents out of the shell. The pond is fed by an underground spring, and the eels are free to go between the two separate ponds through an underwater passage. Next to the pond, normal village
The ceremony is called Kunci Negri, meaning "key country". First, the village priest assigns seven men to throw seven spears and then the captain, who wears special traditional clothes, performs a bathing ritual at the spring. Also, a traditional dance, called the Kabasaran or Cakalele, is performed. The dance is a traditional Malukan war dance. However, it can also be used in customary celebrations, such as the Kunci Negri. Two sacred eels then appear. The villagers believe the eels are their ancestors. Afandy explained in a very matter-of-fact tone, “One is fatter than the other, and they are thicker than regular eels and also shorter in length. One wears a woven necktie, and the other wears a gold earring. It is true. I have seen it for myself. We don’t know where they come from. They appear at this spot. This is a very sacred place”. Afandy left me with a word of warning, “Do not eat eel when you are in Ambon. It is believed that if you eat eel, your skin will turn into eel skin and will not look good. Everyone knows about that. Please take heed.” With that, he quietly took his leave, this fine young man, keeper of the sacred eel pond, guardian and storyteller of the ancient ritual of Waai village.

It is not a surprise that Pandawa Beach is called a hidden beach, as it is actually “hidden” behind large carved limestone cliffs that reveal wide views to the Indian Ocean. There, the first and only beachclub presented by Renaissance Bali Uluwatu Resort and Spa was opened to the public in June 2018. Named Roosterfish, which means “from the land and the sea”, this beachclub’s prime location on the pristine white sandy beach is completed with signature beverages that bring invigorating uniqueness. Here are the drinks you need to check out:
Bloody Scary Mary
5 Spiced Mojito
What is a beverage without food? Roosterfish serves a variety of trendy snacks, fresh salads, Balinese favourites and grilled seafood with an outdoor sunken barbeque pit and pizza oven – both wood-fired. Guests can indulge in the beachclub-style cuisine by savouring the delectable:
The Ceviche
The Roosterfish Platter
As the name represents, this drink consists of unusual ingredients for a drink such as Tabasco, red chilli sambal, and rimmed with Balinese sambal spiced salt called ‘Sambal Matah’. Mixed with vodka, lemon juice, and tomato juice poured in a scary skull shaped glass, this drink my indeed scare you.
This mojito is best enjoyed on a hot humid day, perfect to drink on the beach in Bali. Especially made in Roosterfish, this beverage is a mixture of Myers Rum, freshly squeezed lime juice, fresh mint leaves, dashes of Angostura bitters, and instead of using soda, they use five spice mojito water, a secret potion of Roosterfish.
One of the favourite dishes there, this ceviche offers freshly cut tuna or red snappers with avocado, tomato, cilantro, jicama, onion, chili, and fresh lemon and lime. It is the perfect choice for a light start before trying other delicious dishes.
Enough for everyone, this signature platter is filled with betutu spiced rooster, banana leaf baked baby snapper, thick cut chips, and three options of Roosterfish sambals (sweet soy sauce sambal, Balinese sambal ‘Sambal Matah’, and crushed chili sambal). It is where the land joins the sea.
Glory Fizz
Espresso Martini
The 10” Pizzas
Roosterfish Nasi Goreng
Another refreshing drink, Glory Fizz contains all the tropical tastes you can imagine. It is a mixture of apple juice, basil, cucumber syrup, citrus, and 7up.
Are you looking for a different way to enjoy sipping coffee? Try this Espresso Martini. Kahlua, originating in Mexico, mixed with vodka and espresso created by Dick Brassal at Soho Brasseire in 1993. It is intoxicating without the coffee leaving its strong flavour.
Guests can choose the chef’s crafted pizzas from spiced lamb, Italian meatball, chili crab, to prosciutto. The recommendation? We suggest you to pick the chili crab. It wins over everything.
Another special Roosterfish dish, Roosterfish Nasi Goreng is a delicious dish filled with chunky chicken satays with peanut sauce, yummy salted fish fried rice, sunny-side-up eggs, and pickles.

MOUNT BROMO
A Surreal Experience M
ount Bromo is one of the most well-known mountains in Indonesia. With its miraculous view and beautiful sunrises, visitors cannot help but fall in love with it. Its beautiful name originated from the Hindu god, Brahma. The mountain also has its own legend, according to which a brave prince sacrificed his life for his family. Every year, during an annual festival known as the “Kasada”, people place food and money in the crater of the volcano to commemorate the prince’s sacrifice. Bromo is located in the middle of a plain known as Lautan Pasir or Sea of Sand and has been a protected nature reserve since 1919. Although Bromo is one of the most active volcanoes in Indonesia, last erupting in February 2016, it is also one of the most climbed mountains. go in order to reduce the possibility of encountering rain, but of course there are more tourists at this time of year. Mount Bromo is well known for its glorious sunrises. The breathtaking and ethereal landscape is astounding during these time of day. Looking at the sun rising and casting its golden rays over the active volcano, you will agree that it is a surreal and out-of-this-world experience. The sunset is also a popular attraction for those not wishing to get out of bed early in the morning. Upon reaching the drop off point in Bromo, you will need to hike about 100m to the viewpoint and wait for the sunrise. As you will be spending a few hours at the viewpoint, do bring a thick jacket, gloves and woolen hat to protect you from the biting cold as temperatures can drop to as low as eight degrees.
Besides camping for the more adventurous, there are hotels and resorts for visitors who prefer comfort and relaxation. Bromo Terrace Hotel is one of the many hotels in Bromo. It is affordably priced at Rp1.2 million with good facilities and wonderful views. There are many hotel options to suit your budget. As you make your way back down you will certainly feel that the breathtaking scenery makes braving the early morning and the cold more than worthwhile. The nearest airport to Bromo is Juanda Airport in Surabaya. You can engage the services of tour agencies in Surabaya to plan a seamless trip to Bromo if you wish.

FLASHBACK
The Year of Living Better BY DUNCAN GRAHAM
E
xpat get-togethers at year’s end can turn edgy when welllubricated newbies sound off about this nation’s defects. Those of us who’ve lived here longer and have a stake in the country find ourselves bristling, then mustering counter claims. Fortunately, our task became easier in 2018. Sure, the complainers have some strong points. You don’t need to watch horror movies to pump adrenaline – just looking through the windscreen lifts the pulse rate. Pollution smokes the lungs and stings the eyes. Will it ever lessen? The bureaucracy continues to bloat; the education system has more cracks than the sidewalks and the Republic’s diplomats are still waiting for directions. Yet despite these negatives last year saw a burst of betterment. Which is not to diminish the natural disasters and their terrible death tolls, which could have been lessened through public awareness programs. These are underway, and 2018 should be remembered as the time when politicians were jolted out of complacency. Clearly shaken, they’ve started hearing the experts who’ve long shouted for more money and modern early-warning systems.
of a perforated paper that’s then filed in the bottom drawer under FORGET. Not this time; the handshakes celebrated a real “done deal” that seemed impossible 12 months earlier, and all the years before as negotiations moved slower than Jakarta’s commuter traffic.
will further deny the dream of the archipelago feeding itself – a food security issue which research and consultations might have identified if the rush to build had been paced. Supporters of procedures say that considering every option ensures safety. There must be rules, rigidly enforced.
The May suicide-bomber attacks on East Java churches and police posts shocked all. The response was impressive when compared to similar incidents a few years ago. There’s now awareness that terrorism is a whole-of-community issue, not something just affecting minorities.
Ownership of the stunningly rich Grasberg copper and gold mine in West Papua, which US engineers and local labourers gouged open in 1973, has been a running row for decades. Resource nationalists have been battling foreign capitalists waving Suhartoera contracts. Now Indonesia holds the majority stake. The fact that it’s all over in a US$3.85 billion shuffle of shares and cash shows just how far Indonesia has moved in the past year by asserting its position as the world’s third largest democracy – and getting recognition.
Western engineers have no reason to be smug. Just before Christmas a new 36-storey apartment block in Sydney was evacuated over fears it might tumble, even though stringent building codes were allegedly followed. Dashing ahead or biding time? Construction of the Transmission Gully motorway in New Zealand was first mooted during World War II, a necessary alternative escape route should an earthquake disable the shaky isles’ capital Wellington. Clearly urgent, absolutely vital. The route was debated by working parties with members dying and retiring before making decisions. Every threatened insect and plant had to be identified and moved, all objections considered. Cars are expected to start moving along the 27km road sometime in 2020. That’s when the 1,200-kilometer Trans Java Tollway should be completed. Both projects started in 2004.
Overall the police in 2018 acted professionally and impartially when handling mass protests like those around Monas. The cops have been accepting training from their Australian counterparts.
But let’s stay sober. In October the rupiah plunged to 15,248 against the dollar, its lowest point since the crisis of 1998, terrifying investors. It’s bounced back a little to around 14,500 but remains a worry.
“These aren’t wants, they’re needs,” said Weather Bureau head Dr Dwikorita Karnawati who now expects last year’s budget to be doubled.
This column is not a cheerleader for any candidate in the upcoming April poll, just an observer acknowledging noteworthy changes in 2018. The reasons are for voters to determine.
At first glance the December photos of President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo with Freeport McMoRan’s CEO Richard Adkerson looked like yet another posed East-West business-page line up of forced smiles. These events often mark the signing
The new toll roads and rail lines crisscrossing Java seem to be expanding faster than similar infrastructure projects in our homelands. Upsides, downsides. Good for travellers, not for farmers. Concrete smothering the globe’s most fertile soils

I queue, therefore I am. Government offices were ideal places to build new relationships as long waits forged friendships with strangers. Last year a few more agencies went online meaning we can fill in forms at home and meet less. The challenge for department managers in 2019 is to find tasks for unsackable staff with no 21st century skills.
Indonesian politics have always been volcanoes threatening to erupt. Yet by comparison with Britain and its Brexit crisis, Canberra with three leaders in three years and Washington’s endless chaos, this country is hard lava, stable enough to build firm foundations if laid well. That wasn’t the expectation early last year as parties jostled to build power blocks for the June elections of governors and mayors; the gloomy were forecasting widespread villainy. There was some, but unexceptional and limited. Voters got heated but kept their passions for the TV debates, which are now more watchable than the sinetron (soap opera) domestic disputes. Prices are edging up, unemployment has risen from 5.13 percent in January to 5.34 percent now. We all moan. However no one seems keen to don yellow vests and burn tyres in the streets. Jakarta is not Paris. Vive la difference.

VOLUNTEER LOOKING FOR WAYS TO DO SOME GOOD IN 2019?
Four Expat-Friendly Volunteering Opportunities in Indonesia Off the Beaten Path TEXT AND IMAGES BY GRACE SUSETYO
Here's a collage of Baraka Nusantara, portraying the exterior and interior of Rumah Belajar Sangkabira, coffee cherries and the coffee farmers of Kopi Pahlawan, and the Sembalun landscape.
A
s a country undergoing rapid social and economic change, Indonesia is a dynamic place to be for travellers and volunteers from most walks of life. Social media and intercultural collaboration has also made off-thebeaten-path communities more innovative and accessible than ever, offering expats fulfilling volunteering opportunities just a doorstep away from some of Indonesia’s celebrated travel destinations. In support of UN’s International Volunteer Day and Indonesian initiatives for social and economic change across the archipelago, here are four social enterprises that offer expat-friendly volunteering opportunities. Bring comfortable apparel and shoes, a raincoat, sun protection, insect repellent, flashlights, extra batteries, hard cash, and souvenirs – ideally a keepsake from your home country for your host family, a donation for the community, and a stock of small gifts (just in case). LOMBOK: BARAKA NUSANTARA From the scenic Sembalun highlands of Mount Rinjani, Baraka Nusantara markets Lombok artisan coffee internationally as Kopi Pahlawan and uses the proceeds to fund Rumah Belajar Sangkabira, a community library and Sasak language educational after- school program. Currently recovering from the Lombok earthquakes in August, Baraka is rebuilding the destroyed Rumah Belajar Sangkabira and revitalising the local economy through the Sangkabira Waste Management Program. In December, Baraka plans to resume its Australia Awards-funded collaboration for processing organic waste with Mycotech, a Jakarta-based social enterprise that makes vegan leather out of mushrooms. 20

Volunteering opportunity: Customisable selffunded programs include teaching English in Rumah Belajar Sangkabira; or facilitating waste management activities or workshops on related enterprise skills for Sangkabira Waste Management Program. Architects with interest in vernacular architecture can also ask about opportunities to contribute to post-earthquake rebuilding or the conservation of traditional structures. Apply through the Baraka Nusantara website. Cost: Typical budgets for a seven-day program range from Rp2.2–3.5 million, including airport transfers, accommodation, local guides, local transportation, and three meals per day (excluding donations for Baraka). Wathan, local Baraka leader, owns a homestay. Ideal for: Adults of any age who enjoy great coffee and/or children and are interested in cultural immersion opportunities with a Sasak Muslim community. Minors under 18 are welcome with parental supervision. Preferred professional backgrounds include agriculture, waste management, environmental conservation, cultural tourism, education, healthcare, microfinance, and financial literacy. True to the Sasak sangkabira philosophy, the ideal volunteer values a communal culture of mutual help, hard work and honesty. Conversational command of Indonesian preferred, but translators for hire are available upon request. Travel destinations: Mount Rinjani National Park has re-opened, but hikes are not yet recommended. Alternatively, get scenic glances of the Sembalun hinterland from Bukit Pergasingan (just behind Rumah Belajar Sangkabira) and Bukit Selong. Swim in Umar Maya and Mangku Sakti waterfalls. Explore Desa Adat Beleq, which normally has seven Sasak traditional houses (although half of these are currently damaged by the earthquakes).
How to get there: Daily flights into Lombok International Airport from many major cities. Sembalun, a three-hour drive northeast of the airport, is best reached with a rented car.
TIMOR: LAKOAT KUJAWAS Based in Taiftob village in the south central Timor highlands of Mollo, Lakoat Kujawas is a rural creative co-working space that archives Timorese history and cultural knowledge through community engagement in literature, indigenous food and medicine, agriculture, handwoven textiles, community-based tourism, performing arts, film screenings, and artist residencies. Their social media-based brand LKJWS markets seasonal organic food products and kain tenun by Taiftob artisan farmers and weavers. A library and traditional homestay is available on the Lakoat Kujawas premises. Volunteering opportunity: ApinatAklahat is a customisable three- to 14-day solo residency open for artists, writers, filmmakers, photographers, architects, product designers, and agricultural
professionals. The residency’s aim is to facilitate intercultural knowledge exchange and applicable professional skills to the local community, while giving you a Timorese cultural immersion experience. Send your CV to dickysenda@gmail.com with a proposal detailing who you are, your focus of work, what you intend to share in Lakoat Kujawas, and a final product which Lakoat Kujawas can archive for further studies in the community, e.g. photographs, videos, books, articles, research papers, modules, or designs. Cost: Self-organised sponsorship is recommended, but Lakoat Kujawas may also be able to connect you to their network of potential sponsors if needed. Please refrain from seeking sponsorship from political parties, mining companies, oil palm growers, tobacco companies and the like. Previously, a thespian who stayed then days and presented a theatre performance as her final product worked on a budget of Rp10 million, sponsored by a third-party arts collective. Separately, community members of Lakoat Kujawas normally provide meals for volunteers on a potluck basis, which you are welcome to contribute to financially or in kind. Indicate in your proposal if you require halal, vegan, or other dietary restrictions. Ideal for: Cultured adults of any age who enjoy literature and history, walks in the kebun, preparing wholesome home-cooked meals in the kitchen, and creating art. Lakoat Kujawas has not hosted minors so far, but are open to the possibility of hosting teenagers with or without parental supervision, to be approved on a case-bycase basis at the community’s discretion. Works best with volunteers who care about village revitalisation, contextual education, migrant workers and human rights. Translators are available for expats who need them. Travel destinations: Lakoat Kujawas can organise trips to important adat ritual sites such as Fatu Kanaf rock and Oe Kanaf springs, and Fatumnasi traditional village (entry point to Mount Mutis and its eucalyptus forest). Ask Lakoat Kujawas about the Sandalwood Heritage Trail tour package they’re developing with cultural tourism professionals Agni Malagina and Wiwin Wiyonoputri. In February to April you can join the lakoat (loquat) harvest. If you’re lucky, there might be a wedding you’re welcome to crash, or rituals relating to planting or harvest season. How to get there: Daily flights into Kupang International Airport from Jakarta, Bali, Surabaya, and other major cities. Taiftob, a

three- to four-hour drive from Kupang, is best reached with a rented car via Soe and Kapan.
FLORES AND THROUGHOUT EASTERN INDONESIA: TRAVEL SPARKS Starting in West Flores with the intention of giving fair opportunities to local travel guides, social travel organiser Travel Sparks now operates throughout the island’s popular destinations, with volunteering options in Flores-based Rainbow Reading Gardens – a non-profit network of community libraries promoting literacy in eastern Indonesia’s remote communities. Proceeds from Travel Sparks support Rainbow Reading Gardens’ 107 libraries on 18 islands in eastern Indonesia. Volunteering opportunity: Tailor-made programs are typically 4D3N, though ones as long as two weeks have also been organised. For a 4D3N itinerary, typically two or more days are spent volunteering at a local Rainbow Reading Gardens library. You decide your own volunteering agenda, and have the option of staying at local homestays if you prefer a more immersive experience. Children at the local Rainbow Reading Gardens appreciate stories about your profession or home country. Sign up at the Travel Sparks booking page. Longerterm, non-holiday volunteers can also register at the Rainbow Reading Gardens’ volunteer sign-up page. Cost: Budgets are to be consulted with Travel Sparks. Everyone supporting your trip on-site (guides, ship crews, cooks, drivers) are local and paid fair wages above typical market rates, hence helping them afford sending children to school, buying school supplies, and staying in school. Ideal for: Adventurous volunteers of all ages welcome, including accompanied children and seniors. Works best with volunteers who care about education and environmental conservation, respect local cultural norms, and appreciate interaction with those who call your “travel destination” home. Command of Indonesian optional, as you will be accompanied by an Englishspeaking local guide. Travel destinations: Travel Sparks specialises on Komodo National Park, Labuan Bajo, and other destinations throughout Flores such as Mount Kelimutu’s tricolour lakes, Liang Bua Homo floresiensis cave, and the traditional houses of Wae Rebo and Bena. But Rainbow Reading Gardens is also present throughout eastern Indonesia in islands such as Sumba, Banda (Maluku), Buton (Southeast Sulawesi, near Wakatobi), and Raja Ampat (West Papua) – for which Travel Sparks is happy to organise a volunteering itinerary. Travel Sparks also partners with various
local dance troupes – booking a performance is one of their ways of supporting the livelihoods of traditional artists. How to get there: To be organised by Travel Sparks.
SOUTH SULAWESI: PPLH PUNTONDO Situated by a mangrove beach with a gorgeous elevated walkway through lush gardens and wooden bungalows, Pusat Pendidikan Lingkungan Hidup Puntondo is a non-profit educational centre that focuses on building the capacity and environmental consciousness of Puntondo subvillage’s coastal community through trainings and the development of sustainable community-based enterprises. Most locals are fisherfolk who depend on marine sustainability for their livelihoods and are vulnerable to threats such as plastic pollution and destructive fishing. PPLH Puntondo collaborates with national and expat volunteers in finding solutions and alternative livelihoods for the local community. Volunteering opportunities: PPLH Puntondo welcomes volunteers for mangrove planting, coral reef transplantations, workshops on environmental knowledge and skills for teachers and other target groups, waste management, and production of seaweedand fish-based snacks. Volunteering programs are typically one to three months long. To sign up, send your CV and details on your interests and expertise to pplhpuntondocentre@gmail.com. Cost: Lodging and three meals at PPLH Puntondo costs Rp150,000 per day. Volunteers typically organise their own funding. Consult PPLH Puntondo for other costs and details. Ideal for: Physically fit mid-career professionals ages 25 to 50 with experience in environmental education and community development. Intermediate to fluent level of Indonesian recommended. Travel destinations: Puntondo beach is on the premises of PPLH Puntondo, and several others (Punaga, Topejawa) are within an hour’s reach. Waterfalls in the Bangkoa highlands such as Timurung, Ko’mara and Niagara Barassang are about a two-hour drive inland. About three hours’ drive east, PPLH Puntondo is assisting a community in the Bantaeng highlands for an eco-tourism initiative. Bantaeng is halfway between Puntondo and Bira, the coastal community best known for the making of South Sulawesi’s traditional phinisi ships. Dive resorts are available in Bira. How to get there: Daily flights into Makassar International Airport from most major cities. Puntondo, a three-hour drive south of Makassar, is best reached with a rented car.

TOP 10
Top 10 Indonesian Hoaxes of 2018 Fake news – referred to in Indonesia as “hoax” – is escalating in the run-up to the April 2019 national elections as devious politicians try to win power by exploiting prejudice and ignorance. Here are some of the most preposterous hoaxes of 2018. BY KENNETH YEUNG
MARRIAGE CARD SHOWS FOUR WIVES The Religious Affairs Ministry in November 2018 decided to add another layer of bureaucratic red tape for couples tying the knot in Indonesia, declaring they would have to obtain a marriage card, in addition to regular marriage certificates. An image of the new card went viral, showing space for photos of up to four wives for each husband. Indonesia permits Muslim men to have up to four wives, but this particular card, which contained the Religious Affairs Ministry’s logo, was not genuine. Indonesian married couples already have to obtain passport-style marriage certificates – a red one for husbands and a green one for wives. Also, mandatory national identity cards list marital status. So why the new card? The official reason is
convenience, but sceptics fear it’s another form of revenueraising, as the Religious Affairs Ministry has a history of corruption, from marking up the cost of haj pilgrimages to embezzling funds from an Al-Quran printing project.
TABLE SALT ADULTERATED WITH CRUSHED GLASS This nonsense started in 2017 and continued into 2018. People uploaded videos in which they poured packets of local salt into fine mesh strainers, added water and then claimed the resulting salt crystals were fragments of glass. The idiotic conspiracy theory is that rising prices of imported salt prompted local salt manufacturers to add glass to their products. The uploaders insisted certain brands of salt contained glass and urged people to share their videos. The National Agency of Food and Drug Control tested samples of all the implicated brands and found none contained glass. Much less attention has been given to Indonesia’s three main salt problems: 1. Despite having a massive coastline, Indonesia produces low quality salt and depends on imports. 2. Not all salt produced in Indonesia is iodised, and 3. Most sea salt contains microplastics. Yet again, it’s one rule for glass and another rule for microplastics.
RATNA SARUMPAET ASSAULTED What? You still don’t know who Ratna Sarumpaet is? Perhaps you find Indonesian politics too depressing to follow. Ratna is a playwright who in the mid-1990s boldly challenged the authoritarian Suharto regime. A few years ago, she changed her style and began championing the presidential aspirations of former general Prabowo Subianto, who was dismissed from the military in 1998 because his troops kidnapped and tortured pro-democracy activists. In September 2018, Ratna uploaded a photo of her bruised and swollen face, claiming to have been assaulted in a politically motivated attack. Prabowo publicly condemned those behind the “cowardly attack”. But it was all a lie. Ratna later admitted her face was swollen because of cosmetic surgery. She was arrested in October for spreading fake news and is awaiting trial. 22

YOUNG LEX ASSAULTED What? You don’t know who Young Lex is? Perhaps you have a life and ignore the media attention lavished upon halfwit celebrities. For the grandpas reading this, Young Lex (26) is an Indonesian rapper who overcame poverty and now has 1.5 million subscribers on YouTube, while his songs have over 300 million views. The singer, whose real name is Samuel Alexander Pieter, is fond of BlackPink, South Korea’s hottest girl group. In July 2018, he uploaded a YouTube video in which he “reviews” BlackPink’s album Square Up. While unboxing the CD, he uses a slang term suggesting he would like to masturbate over photos of BlackPink member Lisa. It was typical male pig chauvinism and objectification of women. Outraged BlackPink fans created a petition demanding Young Lex be banned from attending the group’s August 9 appearance in Jakarta. When the band held a meet-and-greet in Jakarta on that day, Young Lex posted a photo on Instagram, showing his face cut and bruised. He claimed to have been beaten by K-pop fans and security. He asked for prayers for his speedy recovery. It was all a lie. There had been no beating. The tattoo-covered rapper was wearing makeup. So, did police arrest him for spreading fake news? No. Once again, it’s one rule for Ratna Sarumpaet and another rule for Young Lex.
Kenneth Yeung is a Jakarta-based editor
VACCINES ARE HARMFUL AND CONTAIN PIG BLOOD Branches of the Indonesian Ulemas Association (MUI) in some regions of Sumatra and Sulawesi in 2018 demanded the government suspend a measles-rubella vaccination program. They declared the vaccine haram (forbidden by Islam) because it contains materials derived from a pig enzyme. That’s true. But rumours were rife the vaccine posed a danger to children. That’s nonsense. MUI, the nation’s top Islamic authority, eventually issued a fatwa declaring that although the vaccine is technically haram, it is also permissible until a non-pig version is developed. Global anti-vaccine scaremongers and the haram declarations meant Indonesia failed to reach its immunisation target of 95 percent coverage. Some parents still believe that vaccines will spread diseases, cause learning difficulties or make their children religiously impure. Once again, it’s one rule for ultra-conservatives and the same rule for conspiracy theorists.
SETYA NOVANTO FOUND RELIGION IN A SMALL CELL In April 2018, Setya Novanto, the disgraced former leader of parliament and Golkar Party, was sentenced to 15 years in jail for embezzling US$7.3 million from a national identity card project. In July 2018, television journalist Najwa Shihab interviewed Setya in his cell at Sukamiskin jail in Bandung, West Java. It was a small, cramped cell and Setya claimed he spent most of his days getting up at 3am and reading the Al-Quran, which he displayed. Only it wasn’t his cell. And the book he showed wasn’t an Al-Quran. Najwa, the smartest person on Indonesian television, wasn’t fooled. Investigations by KPK and the national ombudsman revealed corruption felons at the jail were living in private cells more like five-star hotel rooms, and those who were rich enough could come and go as they pleased. The prison’s chief warden was replaced, but only a fool would believe corruption felons have stopped buying privileges. Once again, it’s one rule for prisoners with loads of stolen money and extreme misery for those with none.
CHINA WANTS TO SWAP DEBT FOR JAVA AND SUMATRA Definitely one of the most ludicrous claims on this list. In August 2018, Indonesian netizens started sharing a “news” article that claimed China had asked for the islands of Java and Sumatra to pay off Indonesia’s rising debt. Indonesia does owe China about US$15 billion, but is far from being in a debt trap, let alone handing over its two most populous islands. Nevermind that Indonesia’s constitution bans foreign ownership of land. The source of the article was a now defunct news blog called “nkrinews-trending”. The article was accompanied by a photo of President Joko Widodo shaking hands with Chinese President Xi Jinping. That photo was actually from March 2015, when the two leaders met at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. There are plenty of other bogus stories about China and Indonesia, such as claims that former president Megawati Sukarnoputri’s Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) is an offshoot of the outlawed Indonesian Communist Party (PKI) and funded by Chinese communists.
THE CIVIL SERVICE IS SELLING JOBS
NAJWA SHIHAB SUPPORTS PRABOWO-SANDI A photo showing respected television journalist Najwa Shihab appearing to support the presidential candidacy of Prabowo Subianto and his running mate Sandiaga Uno went viral in September 2018. It was uploaded after Prabowo selected number 2 in the draw for ballot numbers for the April 2019 presidential election. The photo shows Najwa holding up two fingers as she poses alongside Sandi and her former Metro TV boss, Suryopramoto. The caption declared, “Finally Najwa Shihab Supports PrabowoSandi. Thank God our strength grows.” The image wasn’t photoshopped, but it was an old photo, taken in August 2016, when Sandi visited Metro TV’s Jakarta office. That was a month before Sandi was officially nominated to run for the deputy governorship of Jakarta – a position he won in 2017 after a campaign that exploited religious and racial prejudice. Najwa in August 2017 announced her resignation from Metro TV and later founded an online news channel, Narasi TV. She has turned down offers to join President Joko Widodo’s re-election campaign team, saying she wants to remain an independent journalist. As for the old photo with Sandi, she said it wasn’t a form of endorsement and she was merely making the peace sign. Once again, it’s two fingers for peace and one finger for the status quo.
Well, sometimes this is a hoax. Some of the people selling jobs in Indonesia’s notoriously corrupt, bloated and inefficient civil service are outright scammers, as they cannot deliver the promised positions. It’s not uncommon for people to pay anywhere from Rp25 million to Rp250 million (US$1,750 to $17,500) or more to grease the wheels for entry to the civil service. In cases where people are scammed, the victims are often reluctant to report the matter to police. The fact that thousands of people have fallen for these scams lends credence to allegations that recruitment is not always based on merit. A civil service position is often viewed as a prestigious job for life, complete with avenues for unofficially augmenting a low salary.
NATURAL DISASTERS EXAGGERATED Each time Indonesia was hit by a deadly earthquake, tsunami or volcanic eruption in 2018, there was a deluge of fake news via text message, social media and word-ofmouth. After the August 5 Lombok earthquake that killed over 500 people, there were claims that President Joko Widodo was sending livestock fodder to survivors, and that aid was transported only via the state postal service, and that survivors had resorted to eating coconut husks. All lies, amplified by the president’s critics. After the September 29 earthquake in Palu, Central Sulawesi, there was a rumour that Bili Bili Dam in South Sulawesi had cracked and was about to burst. Another false rumour said there were free flights for relatives of the victims. Photos posted of victims were actually corpses from the devastating 2004 Aceh
tsunami. There were also bogus reports of imminent, even worse disasters. When Soputan volcano in North Sulawesi erupted, people posted photos of a much worse volcanic eruption from South America, claiming it was Soputan.

Masterminded by Indonesia’s leading architect Andra Matin, the whole compound was built from the ground up as The Union Group wanted to do right by this truly unique location. Understated yet striking, the architecture uses space in a way that reflects and is sensitive to its environment, typical of Andra Matin’s style. The wood, brick and horizontal lines contrast beautifully with the plant life outside, creating a tropical contemporary design that’s irresistible to linger in.

Set back into the verdant rice fields, our retreat center for the week will provide the perfect environment for this deep and nourishing work. You will enjoy beautifully decorated rooms, delicious vegetarian meals and excursions to some of Bali’s most colorful markets and sacred local temples. Each day of the retreat will offer a balanced blend of invigorating asana flow and restful restorative practice, with plenty of quiet moments to unwind, breathe and soak up the local environment.
