I often hear people debating the difference between expats and immigrants. The argument sometimes revolves around accusations of racism, some people claiming that if you are a westerner living in a foreign country you are described as an expat, but if you are a non-westerner living in a western country you are described as an immigrant. The counter argument is that, generally speaking, westerners who live in non-western countries temporarily for work reasons are described as expats because they intend to return to their native country at some point. Non-westerners often move to a western country permanently to live and work, so they are described as immigrants. But neither one of these definitions is always true. In reality, the only way to resolve this argument is to impose a time limit. If you live in a country continuously for more than a certain amount of time you are an immigrant, less than that amount of time, you are an expat. Maybe if you assume citizenship you are an immigrant, if you remain on a temporary work permit or other visa, you are an expat. Of course this will never be agreed and the debate will no doubt continue! It is certainly true that many foreigners choose to stay in Indonesia for a very long time and they are invariably described as expats for the duration. Will we ever change the name of this publication to Indonesia Immigrant? Who knows! In this issue you will find Irfan Kortschak’s excellent review of Carl Hoffman’s wonderful book The Last Wild Men of Borneo. If you think you are an intrepid expat living on the frontlines in one of the last great undiscovered secrets of Asia, think again. Bruno Manser and Michael Palmieri walked this path a long time ago, stayed a very long time and did some amazing things. Read the review and then buy the book!

BUSINESS PROFILE GENERAL MANAGER OF HMSHOST INDONESIA

Matt Neal

Matt Neal tells Indonesia Expat about his background, his role in HMSHost Indonesia, and their success in the airport food & beverage industry.

Can you tell us about your background? I’ve been in hospitality for 15 years, mainly in franchising but also have owned/operated hotels/bars and organic cafes. Prior to this, I was a police officer for 13 years.

What are HMSHost Indonesia's strengths? One of the key differentiation elements to our success is down to the quality of our team members with the ability to raise our service standards.

What is your experience in the airport food & beverage industry? Now I have over five years of experience in the airport food & beverage industry with HMSHost Indonesia.

And as a group, HMSHost Indonesia brings a wealth of industry knowledge, experience and commitment as part of the global restaurateur, Autogrill Group | HMSHost International, the world’s leading provider of food and beverage services for people on the move in more than 120 airports around the globe.

When did you start working with HMSHost Indonesia? I came to the paradise island of Bali in 2014 for a long holiday to escape some stress in Australia after a hard couple of years in business. There I was introduced to HMSHost through a mutual connection and then the opportunity for my role was offered to me in September 2014. I was happy to accept and haven’t looked back! What are your responsibilities as the general manager? The role requires me to work with many stakeholders and ‘juggle’ different situations and personalities to reach a clear goal and vision for the company. I’m honoured to be appointed as the general manager to lead such an amazing team of more than 450 colleagues on both Bali and Jakarta operations, also looking into other areas for expansion. I truly believe we have the best people on the island with the passion, innovation and experience to set the bar even higher for the emerging airport food & beverage industry.

What are the special innovation efforts of HMSHost Indonesia? We are thrilled that our innovative brand portfolio that enhances value and excitement has been the proven success

“Indonesia is becoming a more popular destination for tourists and the airport sector in Indonesia is developing at a rapid pace for further development to accommodate the market demand. ”

of our efforts to bring worldwide culinary experiences to the expansion and renovation of Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport in 2013 with nine food & beverage concepts. Three years later, we were given the opportunity to operate nine food & beverage concepts at the new terminal project, Terminal 3 Soekarno-Hatta Airport in Jakarta. We are proud to deliver the best in-class brands to provide popular choices for travellers looking for familiarity such as the first branch of the UK’s favourite coffee shop, Costa Coffee Indonesia at Terminal 3 Soekarno-Hatta Airport and first on the island, The Coffee Club, known as Australia's largest home-grown café group. HMSHost Indonesia also partnered with outstanding national or local brands to capture the taste and character of specific regions such as Djournal Coffee by Ismaya that was recently recognised as the Best Airport Coffee Shop in Asia Pacific or our own proprietary brands that serve authentic Indonesian and Asian cuisine. What are the plans for expansion in the future? Indonesia is becoming a more popular destination for tourists and the airport sector in Indonesia is developing at a rapid pace for further development to accommodate the market demand. There is still plenty of room for us on future growth and we look forward to contributing to Indonesia’s airport sector growth in the coming years.

A Complete Guide to Sports Nutrition Registration in Indonesia If you want to distribute or import sports nutrition products to Indonesia, you will first need to register them. In this article, we will walk you through sports nutrition registration in Indonesia as well as bring out some common mistakes made during the process and explain what preventive steps you can take to avoid them.

The sports nutrition industry in Indonesia Market research analyst Ken Research had previously estimated that the Indonesian fitness industry will hit US$290 million in 2018, with an increasing number of gym and fitness facilities that have further fueled the demand for vitamins, diet pills, and health supplements in Indonesia. However, despite the fact that Indonesia is a rapidly growing market with the fourth largest population in the world, there is little competition as the sports nutrition industry is still in its infancy with only a few international players dominating the market. Below are the brands registered at the time of this article being published, and any brands outside these are not sold legally and are at risk of being banned.

Sports nutrition registration in Indonesia Sports nutrition registration in Indonesia, as well as cosmetic product registration and food registration, heavily depends on the classification of the products under the Indonesian Food and Drug Control (FDC), also known as Badan Pengawas Obat dan Makanan (BPOM).

Who can register sports nutrition products in Indonesia? Importers and manufacturers located outside Indonesia cannot register their sports nutrition products directly. If you don’t have a company or an importer in Indonesia yet, you can take any of the following routes: 1. Set up a foreign-owned company The first option is to set up a foreign-owned company in Indonesia. The maximum allowed foreign ownership for import and export companies is 100 percent and 67 percent for distribution companies. Note that importexport companies cannot distribute products, so they need to assign a distributor. 2. Register a local or a nominee company Another way is to set up a local or a nominee company (PT). Nominee companies do not need to comply with foreign ownership restrictions since the nominee is purchasing the shares through a loan agreement and the shares are pledged back to you, giving you full control over the company.

You can, therefore, see the fruitful ground the sports nutrition market in Indonesia offers.

3. Appoint an importer or distributor Your third option is to name an importer or distributor, which means that you will assign another company in Indonesia to be your importer or distributor. However, note that this means the distributor will hold your products for five years. 4. Appoint Emerhub as your nominee registrar or product holder If you do not want to set up a company in Indonesia, you can also appoint Emerhub as your nominee registrar or product holder, and the company will register your products using its company licences. Note that you can register each brand and product only under one appointed registrar, and the same product names cannot be registered twice. The next registration cannot be executed until the expiration, which is five years after approval. As such, there are often many disputes between the appointed distributor and principal due to the inability to transfer the ownership of product registration numbers to a newly-appointed registrar. Any disputes related to this can only be settled by the decision of the court in Indonesia, as also mentioned in BPOM regulations. Many of Emerhub’s clients prefer to have a resident registrar (nominee) through Emerhub's service to avoid this complication.

#4 Getting your products stuck at the Indonesian customs Getting your products stuck in Indonesian customs is another problem that often happens. For everything to go smoothly at customs, you need to prepare some essential documents in advance. Emerhub can assist you in your processes in Indonesia and make sure everything runs smoothly via the company’s importer of record (IOR) service: • All imported sports nutrition products comply with local Indonesian laws • Correct documentation of the products • Payment of all duties, tariffs, and fees on your imported sports nutrition products • Customs clearance goes smoothly • Delivery of the products to the final recipient

Timeline for sports nutrition registration in Indonesia

Common mistakes with registering sports nutrition products

The process of sports nutrition registration in Indonesia is carried out in multiple phases, and the expected total timeframe is from six months to one year.

When registering food products, health supplements or sports nutrition products in Indonesia, we have frequently encountered some common mistakes made during the process.

Step 1: Audit Before you can proceed with registering your sports nutrition products in Indonesia, you must first pass the warehouse audit, conducted by the local BPOM office. Without a warehouse, you cannot register any products in Indonesia.

#1 Selling before you get approval If you start selling your sports nutrition products before you get approval or have a BPOM number, it allows the BPOM to ban your products and tarnish your brand name during their market audit, so be careful not to do this.

Step 2: Preparation and submission of application At this stage, you need to gather data from the principal, manufacturer, and registrar and also decide on which sports nutrition products you wish to register. The collection and preparation of all the required documents generally takes two to three weeks.

#2 Registering too many products at the same time Being too ambitious and registering too many products at the same time is another mistake that companies tend to make. We strongly advise you to conduct the appropriate market research in Indonesia before deciding on the number of products to register.

Step 3: Assessment and evaluation by BPOM If BPOM accepts your application, they will issue an official bill for you to pay. This payment will allow you to go to the next stage – assessment.

#3 Not having a dedicated professional to assist you Sports nutrition product registration in Indonesia is a very long process. It requires many follow-ups and physical visits to the BPOM and takes up a lot of your resources and time. Another mistake often made by businesses is not getting a dedicated professional to assist them with the registration process. So get it right the first time by asking Emerhub to help you with the registration process. They will handle all your paperwork and make sure you submit the complete and proper documents.

Assessment by the BPOM can have three outcomes: • Approval of the registration – BPOM will issue it within 150 days of the evaluation • Additional data is required – you have 50 days to submit additional data, can be extended for another 25 days • Rejection – if you fail to provide additional information in a given time or your products don’t comply with requirements, BPOM will automatically cancel the registration process

#5 Entering into an exclusive distributorship One of the options for sports nutrition is to enter into an exclusive distributorship with the appointed registrar in Indonesia. However, this also means a five-year exclusive commitment with one distributor. One way to avoid this problem is to set up a local or nominee company or appoint Emerhub as your nominee registrar or product holder as mentioned before.

How to start with sports nutrition registration in Indonesia The planning process for sports nutrition product importation is vital to the subsequent success of the products in Indonesia. Therefore, it is wise to ensure that you get a professional agency with years of experience to assist you throughout the whole process. If you would like to find out more on how Emerhub can help you in your sports nutrition business in Indonesia, contact them through their website, www.emerhub.com

Penalties for non-compliance Importers and manufacturers that do not follow the Indonesian law for imported sports nutrition products will get penalties based on the level of the violations. This could be a written letter of warning, a suspension of your imports or products or a termination of the importation of your products. We highly recommend any importers that wish to import sports nutrition products to Indonesia to check with Emerhub as they can provide the required business consultation and also assist you with all legal matters.

Sextortion Risk Remains High In a society where pornography is illegal and moral hypocrisy is high, undressing for a video call is fraught with risk. BY KENNETH YEUNG

PUNISH THE VICTIM Thanks to rampant corruption in Indonesia’s jails, inmates are able to have access to smartphones. There have been several cases of prisoners posing online as wealthy men in order to attract women, who are blackmailed after being tricked into sharing nude photos or videos.

T

he heady thrill of a blossoming romance can make a person throw caution to the wind, behaving in a manner that leaves them susceptible to extortion. That was the fate of Linda (not her real name), a 24-year-old university student and recruitment worker from Tangerang, west of Jakarta. In December, she met a man named Rival Jasita (35) on Facebook. They chatted frequently via WhatsApp. When they met in person, Linda fell in love. Rival, who lives in Mangga Besar, West Jakarta, did not tell her he was married.

In a recent case, a policewoman from Makassar, South Sulawesi, thought she was communicating with a police officer from Lampung province, but he was actually a convicted criminal, serving an eight-year sentence for murdering his jealous gay lover. The woman shared lewd selfies and an 11-minute nude video with the murderer, Alfiansyah (23), who in 2014 had beaten his boyfriend to death because he considered him too possessive and too demanding. Alfiansyah said he had received his smartphone from another prisoner, who was being released. He then created a Facebook account posing as a police commissioner and looked for women to extort. After tricking the policewoman, he later shared her nude photos and video online.

Attracted by Rival’s boyish good looks, Linda agreed when he proposed a business deal, unaware he was merely tugging at her heartstrings to loosen her purse-strings. She gave him Rp25 million (US$1,765) for his spurious welding business after he promised to repay her capital plus a 30 percent return within just one month. When Rival made a video call to Linda, he asked to her take off her clothes. She consented. Rival then made three screen captures with his phone. He later sent the three images to Linda via WhatsApp and demanded she transfer Rp35 million (US$2,470) or he would publicly upload the photos. Terrified, Linda made the transfer. A few days later, Rival demanded a further Rp65 million (US$4,585). Linda implored him to stop the extortion, insisting she had only Rp20,000 (US$1.40) left. Rival showed no mercy. In a series of intimidating and obscenely rude messages, he claimed she still had a lot of money. He vowed to shame her by sending the compromising photos to Linda’s family, boss and neighbours. He also threatened to show proof she had visited him at a hotel. Genuinely lacking sufficient money, Linda went to the police on January 7. They set a trap for Rival, instructing Linda to arrange a meeting with him to collect the money. Less than three hours later, Rival was arrested at the meeting place. He faces charges of fraud and extortion, and could be spending up to nine years in jail if tried and convicted of both offenses. Much will depend on whether Linda can afford the stress, humiliation and expense of going through a trial process. Tangerang Police chief Ewo Samono urged people to be more careful when using social media and not to place too much trust in new acquaintances.

“Tangerang Police chief Ewo Samono urged people to be more careful when using social media and not to place too much trust in new acquaintances.”

In a sad indictment of the professionalism of the Indonesian media, some online news outlets published Linda’s real full name and home address – and the unedited blackmail photos; yet they pixilated Rival’s face when publishing a photo of him. Police are partly to blame for the photo leak – they confiscated Rival’s two smartphones and then shared screen-grabs of the incriminating WhatsApp images with the media. MEDICAL RESEARCH Collectors of amateur pornography in Indonesia have devised a method of tricking women into sending nude or semi-nude photos of themselves. After choosing a young target, they browse through the woman’s list of contacts on her social media accounts. They’re looking for a friend who is a health worker or a university student, ideally a medical student. Then they create a fake social media account, posing as the friend. They send a message, claiming to be conducting medical research on skin colour,

so could the woman please strip down to her underwear or less, take some photos and send them. Dana Paramita, a television news presenter from Central Java, received unusual messages on the popular chatting application Line from a person posing as her friend Levina, a medical student. “Levina” said she was researching the relationship between nutrition and skin colour in women, comparing the skin of women who had and had not given birth. Dana was asked to send full-body photos in only her underwear as “research material”. “Levina” said she urgently needed the photos because her research deadline was looming and she had a lack of sampling. Suspicious of the request, Dana consulted a doctor friend, who warned her it was bogus. Dana then checked her Line contacts and noticed two listings for Levina: one genuine and the other an imposter.

How did authorities respond to the case? Did they punish the Lampung jail’s chief for allowing an inmate to have a smartphone? Of course not. Instead, they punished the victim, firing the policewoman for her “immoral conduct”. CHILD VICTIMS Indonesia’s Child Protection Commission this month warned parents that sextortion cybercrime targeting children is on the rise. Adult predators, usually men, pose as children on social media and reach out to real children, establishing trust and trying to make them fall in love. Commission member Putu Elvina said that once an online relationship becomes intimate, the predator will send a nude photo of a boy or girl, claiming to be the person in the photo, and ask the victim to send them similar photos in return. If the victim complies, the extortion commences. They will be asked to transfer money or telephone credit, otherwise their nude photos will be uploaded to Facebook or Instagram and shared with their family, friends and school. Putu said she had received reports of victims moving schools to avoid the risk of stigmatisation, but they continued to be threatened by their online predators. She urged parents to provide guidance to children and regularly check their social media interactions.

SNA MEDIA CLUB COLUMN

Indonesia Expat and Singapore National Academy are joining forces to provide insightful articles on Surabaya. The young student journalists in the SNA Media Club get to learn valuable writing techniques with the help of the editorial staff at Indonesia Expat.

London is the capital and the largest city of England. As a vibrant city visited by people from all over the world, its popularity is unmatched. The ease of getting around using the Tube, London’s public train system, is certainly a plus point to attract tourists. In this article, we will be sharing some “must visit” iconic places in London.

London Eye

Trafalgar Square Trafalgar Square is a popular meet-up place for Londoners. It is always full of locals and tourists and is only a leisurely walk from Buckingham Palace where you can see the changing of the guard ceremony. This ceremony is certainly a must-see event as evidenced by the huge crowds it attracts. Our advice would be to come early to snatch the best spot to take photos. It is also near central London, Westminster, where you can find Big Ben and the iconic red telephone booths of London. Here you can take your time to snap lots of Instagrammable shots!

The London Eye, the tallest Ferris wheel in Europe, is a must try. It is located on the south bank of the River Thames and is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the world. The structure is 135 metres tall and the wheel diameter is 120 metres. Opened in 2000, it was the world's tallest ferris wheel until the construction of the 160-metre Star of Nanchang in 2006. The London Eye is open every day from 10am to 4.30pm, except on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year. The adult pass costs £20 and the child pass £16.

Tower Bridge Tower Bridge is the most distinctive bridge in the city with its two high towers. Located close to London Bridge, Tower Bridge also crosses the River Thames. For £50 you can sign up for an exclusive behind the scenes tour. You will get to see for yourself the iconic towers, the high-level walkways and the Victorian engine rooms, and discover other secrets not known to many.

Shakespeare’s Globe Fans of Shakespeare can head to Shakespeare’s Globe to watch his plays in one of the most historical theatres in England. The theatre is ten minutes walk from London Bridge Station. It was originally called the Gielgud Theatre until it was renamed in 1994. Check out their website for details of performances.

London Bridge Many of us grew up singing a common nursery rhyme which includes the name of this attraction, so since you are in town, why not visit London Bridge before it falls down? Located in Central London, this historical bridge crosses the River Thames near the city of Southwark. Visit the “London Bridge Experience” and take a trip back in time on a tour of the notable moments in London’s history.

BE PREPARED AND PLAN WELL Of course there are many more places to visit while you are in London, so planning in advance is advisable. Dress for the weather, wear comfortable shoes and be prepared to walk a lot because some of the must-visit places are so close to each other that it would be a waste to take the Tube. Have a great trip!

BOOK REVIEW THE LAST WILD MEN OF BORNEO

Fantastic Visions in the Realm of the Imagination BY IRFAN KORTSCHAK

Courtesy of James Barclay

only once, by chance, in a restaurant, where they had an inconsequential conversation. Their lives took very different trajectories.

C

arl Hoffman’s The Last Wild Men of Borneo consists of the stories of two very different men who had practically nothing in common except their mutual obsession with the island of Borneo. The first of these was Bruno Manser, a rugged Swiss idealist who in the 1980s sought out the nomadic, huntergatherer Penan group in the forests of Sarawak, seeing in them the antithesis of a modern society that he rejected. Oddly, after initial resistance, these nomadic hunters and gatherers seemed to accept Bruno, to recognise and respect his strength and determination to survive in the forest. He learned the language, became expert at hunting with a blow pipe and his bare hands, and began to wear the characteristic loincloth, rattan bracelets, and mullet-style haircut of the Penan. The second subject of Hoffman’s book is Michael Palmieri, an opportunistic, adventurous buccaneer who rode the crest of the wave of disenchanted youth who travelled to Asia in the 60s and 70s. He

eventually discovered the wild beaches of south Bali in the early 70s, still quite a few years before the crowds arrived. He travelled into the hinterlands of Borneo, up the rivers and their tributaries to visit remote longhouses. Unlike Bruno, he was not driven by a desire to “live in the belly of the mother” with primitive people of the forest. He enjoyed his adventures, he enjoyed pushing further into unknown territory than those around him, but primarily he was looking for treasure, for wood carvings, masks, totems, any object that could satisfy the booming demand for “primitive art.” It’s an odd juxtaposition. Hoffman’s story jumps back and forth, in alternating chapters, between the lives of these two men, with the author describing the paths by which the two men arrived in Borneo, the impact it had on their lives, the manner in which they navigated or failed to navigate the dramatic changes that have affected the island over the decades, and the parts they played in ushering in these changes. Their lives barely touched each other. They met

At the time when Bruno went off to the forest to join the Penan, Malaysia’s logging industry was undergoing a massive expansion, destroying much of the forest in which the community lived, with little compensation paid or recognition given to their rights to the land. Bruno began organising the people against the logging companies and government agencies, demanding moratoriums and reservations, smuggling out petitions and manifestos, and conducting flamboyant stunts as a guerilla activist that attracted global attention. While he became a hero and icon to the movement, his efforts were largely futile. Logging continued, most Penan people settled and more or less integrated into the

bottom rung of modern rural Malaysian society, their traditional way of life fading to memory. In 2000, Bruno disappeared into the forest, never to be seen again. He is almost certainly dead, despite a few wishful fantasies that he has become some kind of phantom. As an art dealer who got in early, Michael Palmieri has ended up as one of the more successful collectors and dealers of indigenous Dayak art in the world. He has become something of a lightning rod for the collective guilt attached to cultural appropriation and exploitation, often despised and disliked by those who now hold him partially responsible for changes around the world that were vastly bigger than the actions of a single man. He continues to live in Bali, a place that now bears little or no resemblance to the one that first drew him there. The rivers are mapped, the treasures largely exhausted, and the longhouses gone. He can never really return to America, but his place in his new home is ambiguous and marginal. But at the same time, he has survived and found a way to evolve. Hoffman uses the incongruous juxtaposition to explore themes related to the fascination of people from rich, developed societies with primitive societies. Hoffman’s previous book was an investigation into the disappearance in 1961 of Michael Rockefeller, a descendant of one of the richest families in America at the time, on a trip to acquire the art of the Asmat tribe, an isolated community who live in the swamplands and lowland rainforest on the southwestern coast of bordering the Arafura Sea. Until very recently, the Asmat have had limited interactions with the outside world, and their attachment to their traditional way of life remains strong.

During his stay with the Asmat to investigate this story, Hoffman came to reflect deeply on his own fascination with isolated, wild people. More generally, he came to reflect on the persistent obsession of modern society with the idea of wild people who have not been corrupted by civilisation. Stories about an uncontacted tribe in the Amazon, on the Sentinelese islands, or anywhere else thrill and enthrall. The very fact that we don’t know and can’t understand makes it possible for us to construct any story we like. As Hoffman says, we use tribal people as blank slates on which to project our own needs and desires. Going all the way back to Rousseau’s idea of the Noble Savage, the need for people on whom we can project these needs and desires is perhaps now becoming even stronger with the increasing shortage of people on whom these fantasies can be projected. While Hoffman had been aware of Bruno’s story for decades, it was a chance meeting with Palmieri at the Ubud Writers’ Festival that determined him to use the stories of the two men to investigate these themes. Both of the men, wittingly or unwittingly, pandered to the fantasy, the obsession with primitive people. Bruno seemed to be able to enter the forbidden kingdom, with many thousands of people around the world idealising him and holding him up as a hero, living the fantasy vicariously through him. Bruno himself may have wanted to become one of the Penan – but everyone else just wanted to be Bruno, the white man who gains admittance to the forbidden kingdom. Unable to learn the skills or tolerate the discomfort of living in the forest themselves, he was their key to that world. As Hoffman says, it is always Tarzan who is the hero, never the indigenous people themselves. They are merely the backdrop for the fantasy world in which Tarzan lives. Palmieri pandered to the same fantasy by selling works of art from that kingdom, enabling people to gain entrance to the kingdom in a very different way.

Hoffman sees the swarms of tourists who pour onto the island, attending shamanic drumming workshops, taking snaps of tooth filing ceremonies and creations, shooting selfies of themselves performing asana in front of temples. Hoffman realises that the thirst and longing for the traditional old ways is a fundamental hypocrisy: “We only wanted it when it suited us, for we wanted our freedom too. We came, we ogled, we left.” It is the people of our fantasies who pay the price. Hoffman realises that Bruno wanted to preserve the forests of the Penan so that they could live his dream, not their own dreams. And Bruno could always leave. By the end of the book, in Hoffman’s eyes, Bruno is less the saint that Hoffman imagined when he began his journey, and Michael is much more human and likeable. In the final chapters, Hoffman quotes an old friend of Bruno’s, Georges Ruegg, who says: “The art of life is to grow old, but not to lose your beliefs as you do. Or if you lose them, to find new ways to be glad to be alive.” Bruno’s tragedy, he says, was that he couldn’t evolve. In the final pages of the book, Hoffman hears from “the formerly handsome” Palmieri, now an old man with hearing aids. He is happy to be coming home to Bali, to the life he has created for himself there, despite his decaying body and the changes around him. He is no saint and no hero. But at least he has found new ways to be glad to be alive. In the end, perhaps we can learn more from Michael than Bruno. Learning to grow old gracefully in a changing world is perhaps a far more deeply profound skill than living a life of pointless martyrdom to a fantastic vision of a world that never really existed in the first place, except in our own imaginations.

In his book, Hoffman maintains his focus on his two main characters, keeping his presence as the narrator light-handed. But in the final section, he emerges from the shadows to describe his own journey, with Michael, to partially retrace the journeys of Michael’s youth, into Kalimantan. They start in Bali, where

TOP 10

Top 10 Indonesian Urban Myths & Mistruths BY KENNETH YEUNG

The penalty for masturbation in Indonesia is decapitation Communism is the biggest threat to Indonesia The Indonesian Communist Party (PKI) was indeed a force to be reckoned with in the 1960s. But as soon as Suharto received power from Sukarno in March 1966, he banned PKI. About one million of its members, supporters and suspected sympathisers were killed. Many others were jailed without trial. Since then, Indonesia’s most leftist party has been the miniscule People’s Democratic Party (PRD), which displays pictures of Che Guevara and is opposed to capitalism. But it’s definitely not a communist party, let alone a popular party. In the 1999 general election, PRD won a paltry 0.07 percent of the vote, failing to qualify for future elections. Wake up Indonesia. There are no secret local armies of communists or “liberals” trying to destroy the country. Rampant corruption, deforestation and the political exploitation of religion are among the nation’s biggest problems. Fear-mongering opponents of President Joko Widodo have resurrected the communist bogeyman in the hope it will bring them to power and justify authoritarianism.

Plastic rice from China is sold in Indonesia This food-scare crock emerged in Indonesia in May 2015, after video footage of a plastics factory in China was uploaded to YouTube with a title claiming it showed the production of fake rice. The clip was re-uploaded by Indonesian netizens and went viral. Some Indonesian newspapers, TV stations and online media outlets claimed China really was making fake rice. In the midst of this alarm, a rice porridge vendor in Bekasi, West Java, declared she had unwittingly purchased and served plastic rice. Newspapers announced that a girl in Medan, North Sumatra, had fallen sick after eating plastic rice. Stateowned certification company Sucofindo claimed plastic was found in a sample of the rice from Bekasi. More stringent tests of the same sample revealed there was no plastic. More than a year after the hoax was debunked, cretinous reporters were still bleating about “rice contaminated with plastic grains across the archipelago”. 14

This piece of nonsense has appeared in online lists of “The World’s Strangest Laws” for over a decade. It has also been republished online since 2007 by newspapers such as Australia’s The Daily Telegraph, where editors were either too stupid or too lazy to check facts. There is no Indonesian legislation specifically banning masturbation. The closest is Article 281 of Indonesia’s antiquated Criminal Code, which mandates a maximum penalty of two years and eight months or a maximum fine of Rp3,000 for any person who “with deliberate intent publicly offends against decency”. Article 6 of the 2008 Pornography Law carries a maximum penalty of ten years in jail or a fine of Rp5 billion for anyone who publicly exhibits or depicts nudity or other pornographic content. Another online list of bizarre (fake) Indonesian laws claims: “No woman is allowed to be taller than her husband – if necessary she must chop off a section of her legs.”

A ginger tourist was raped by an orangutan World News Daily Report, a website that publishes fake news for laughs, in April 2017 ran an article that claimed a red-haired Irish tourist was savagely raped by an orangutan in Borneo. It started like this: “An ecologist’s dream to watch orangutans in their natural habitat quickly turned into his worst nightmare after being savagely attacked and raped by a 400-pound orangutan in the jungle of Borneo. Zack O’Reilly, a young 26-yearold from Ireland, who is presently studying biology at Dublin City University and has been a Greenpeace activist for the past three years, had always dreamed of seeing orangutans in their natural habitat and was a strong advocate against the palm oil industry, which is a great threat to the endangered species.” Numerous websites were fooled by the fake story, including Indonesia’s leading online news portal, TRIBUNnews.com. Sadly, one story that’s not an urban myth was about an orangutan named Pony being shaved and used in a Central Kalimantan brothel frequented by oil palm plantation workers. She was rescued from the brothel in 2003.

Bali’s bag colours denote tourists’ bargaining skills The claim is that shopkeepers in Bali will give foreign tourists black plastic bags if they have good bargaining skills and striped or red plastic bags if they are easy targets – all for the sake of alerting other shopkeepers. This absurd piece of hogwash was published as fact in May 2018 by British tabloid the Daily Mail’s Australian website. “What does the colour of your Bali shopping bag say about you? Street merchants use different plastic to show if you're a cheapskate or an easy mark,” claimed the headline. The ensuing article’s sole source was a tourist named Kristian Troy, who had tested the theory at two shops. The Daily Mail claims to be one of the world’s most trusted news brands and claims its Australian version has a strong focus on editorial integrity. Despite that, it was too stupid to understand that a plastic bag’s colour denotes its durability, size, price and supplier. It also failed to mention that using plastic bags in a country polluted by trash is dumb.

Children are being kidnapped by beggars for their organs In 2017, Indonesian social media was rife with stories about people abducting children and harvesting their organs. Some posts were accompanied by disturbing images and videos of dismembered bodies. The warnings, repeated by the mainstream media, claimed the kidnappers included truck drivers, street vendors, pregnant women, insane people and beggars. Consequently, several innocent people suspected of preying on children were attacked by hysterical mobs. At least one man was beaten to death. Some needy Indonesians have offered to sell a kidney online or to organ traffickers, but police have not documented any cases of children being kidnapped for their organs.

Noisy motorbikes and cars are cool

White skin is more beautiful than dark skin Enter any Indonesian supermarket or pharmacy and you’ll find loads of skin whitening products, for women and men, priced to suit all budgets. The cosmetics companies behind these products are simply perpetuating and profiting from the racist notion that white skin is more desirable than dark skin. In many societies throughout history, white skin denoted a person of a high social status and/or wealth. This was because rich people could stay indoors, whereas poorer people had to work outdoors as farmers or fishermen, exposing themselves to sunburn. Television advertisements for skin whitening products in Indonesia have included one that shows a woman feeling ugly and ignored by her handsome boss unless she starts using the product, then her boss invites her to dinner. Naturally dark skin is not something to be ashamed of, but companies make billions of dollars by pushing the disgustingly racist lie that white skin is better.

The phenomenon of rev-heads – people driving motorcycles or cars with modified exhaust pipes (or mufflers) to make them noisier – is not unique to Indonesia. Nevertheless, Indonesia has more than its fair share of noisy motorcyclists. Why? Because some boys, young men and older men who should know better, think a really loud motorbike symbolises masculine coolness. They’re wrong. It actually indicates the person is an insecure attention-seeker, so stupid they can only get attention by disturbing the peace. There is even a theory that men with excessively noisy vehicles are compensating for physical inadequacy. When a young man roars down the street on his deafening bike, people do not think, “Wow, that guy is so cool!” Instead, they think, “Oh, the poor man has a small brain and a matching reproductive organ.” It’s a bit silly to advertise your inadequacies so publicly and so noisily. Police efforts to crack down on these ignoramuses can be fatal. On December 30, 2018, a Mobile Brigade Police officer reprimanded a noisy motorcyclist in South Sumatra. An argument ensued and the officer struck the man with his pistol. The man and his seven friends then stabbed and beat the officer to death.

Homosexuality is a disease In recent years, some Indonesian political parties and religious leaders have been calling on the government to criminalise lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) activities. Vigilante groups have taken the law into their own hands, raiding gay bars and even private houses where lesbians reside. There has also been a moral panic that HIV/AIDS is only a gay disease, and that gays are paedophiles. Efforts to promote safe sex (condom use) are equated with promoting promiscuity and LGBT. The Indonesian Ulemas Council, the nation’s top Islamic authority, in March 2015 issued a fatwa declaring that homosexuality is a curable disease. It also said same-sex acts should be heavily punished, by penalties ranging from caning to death. The Health Ministry in 2018 included homosexuality in a medical guide of mental disorders. The fact is that homosexuality has long been part of Indonesian culture and was tolerated for centuries, before bigots started preaching hate speech. Homosexuality is not a disease. It just means being attracted to people of the same sex. Private sexual relations between consenting adults should not be the business of the state.

Gerwani tortured and mutilated generals Gerwani (the Indonesian Women's Movement) was founded in Central Java in 1950. It promoted women's labour rights and became affiliated with the Indonesian Communist Party (PKI). In the early hours of October 1, 1965, a group of Indonesian soldiers killed six army generals (and a captain mistaken for a general) in what was later labelled a “failed coup” and blamed on PKI. The bodies of the generals were dumped in a disused well at Lubang Buaya (literally "crocodile pit") in East Jakarta. The Army asserted that Gerwani members performed sadistic mutilations on the generals, before and after the killings. The women were supposedly dancing naked, cut off penises and ate them, and gouged out eyeballs. Autopsies found no evidence of such torture. Instead, some Gerwani members were tortured into making false confessions. It served the propaganda of Suharto, as he moved to take power from Sukarno and crush PKI.

You Are What You Eat What you eat has an impact on your organs and your arteries. Your arteries supply your organs with oxygen. Any adjustments to your diet can influence your health. I discuss some very basic but important diet facts in this article.

What is cholesterol? We all need some cholesterol, it makes up part of the wall of every cell in your body. Most of us have too much of it in our systems. Excess cholesterol can be deposited on the inside of your arteries as fatty ‘plaques’. These clog up your arteries, which can lead to heart attack and stroke.

• More fruit and vegetables (at least five portions a day) • More fish • Less meat, particularly red meat • Less processed food • Less saturated fat • More unsaturated vegetable oils (olive oil) • More unrefined carbohydrates (wholemeal, wholegrain foods and beans)

Too much salt…

High blood pressure can narrow and damage your arteries, which increases your risk of heart attack and stroke.

Salt plays a major role in raising blood pressure. The recommended maximum is 6 g (about a teaspoon) of salt a day. Salt is sodium chloride, not just sodium (6 grams of salt is 2.4 grams of sodium).

Diet changes will help both your cholesterol and your blood pressure.

Good Practice has registered patients from over 60 countries. Our all English speaking team implements international guidelines. Try us.

Plant based foods can lower your cholesterol. Some examples are: • Soluble fibre (oats, strawberries, oranges, prunes) • Almonds • Soya foods (tofu, soya products)

Making sure that your weight is down will reduce blood pressure and cholesterol. Exercise will increase your ‘good’ HDL cholesterol. This can actually protect your heart and brain. Diet plays an important role in how high your cholesterol is.

How to keep your cholesterol low

Cooking from scratch makes you more in control. When you’re cooking, experiment with more spices and lemon juice to add flavour. You might find it fun. If you have any further questions or concerns you should contact your trusted medical practitioner.

You have to make sure it is in your daily diet, so it can be a challenge to stick to it.

Most foods already contain salt. Ideally you should cut down gradually, until your taste buds get accustomed to less salt. Within weeks, you’ll find the foods you used to crave taste far too salty.
