the indosole story: from process to product

It takes thousands of years for a tire to decompose in a landfill. right now, millions of waste tires are polluting land, clogging rivers and drains, and wreaking havoc on the beautiful land of Indonesia. We believe that these tires can be put towards a better purpose. Indosole represents a lifestyle of resourceful creation. We are on a mission to salvage tires and other waste materials to give them new life as fashionable and functional goods. The materials we use are consciously sourced from the islands of Indonesia. The soles of our shoes are derived from old tires that are salvaged directly from landfills, sanitized, and transformed into brand new products. We pride ourselves in using organic manufacturing processes without the use of fuel powered machines—just strong hands and minds. I am originally from Santa Barbara, California. I've lived in LA and have now been living in San Francisco since 2008.
Tell us about yourself
I grew up drawing, painting, sculpting, making ceramics and skateboarding. Being an artist/skateboarder really helped me grow as a creative. Together they lead me to explore every possible medium I could possibly touch and helped me push my boundaries creatively. I am an artist/designer/skateboarder/creative in no particular order.
What inspired you in creating the Pathways collection ?
I am passionate for "hand-done" anything...typography, ceramics, sculpture, paintings, music...you name it. History, love, passion, life and soul transcends through anything made by hand. Design through ones hand is much more powerful and meaningful then just a couple of points and a fill in a computer program. This project is inspired by bits and pieces of multiple "hand-made" pieces of history that still stand to inspire future generations. The perfectly imperfect, yet precise all over print patterns that covers the "hand-made" ceramics and sarapes by both the American and Navajo Indians are each a creative self expression, a piece of art, a story and history. I am inspired by those passionate enough to create and strong enough to make their own mark for the world to see.

Following our tradition of customized local patterns and materials, Indosole's camouflage patterns are based off of the 1970’s era uniforms of the Indonesian army.
hand-dyed indonesian batik The batik fabric used in Indosole's products is hand-dyed with traditional Balinese waxresist methods which are free from toxic chemicals and fuel-powered machinery. After carefully combing through thousands of designs, we decided on two beautiful batik patterns, which consistently appear throughout this season's footwear and apparel line.
From the sandy beaches of Bali to the urban hustle of San Francisco, we invite you down a path which intersects at a beautiful place called “Balifornia” where vibrant color meets functional comfort.

100% Re-purposed tire soles Indosole’s signature tire tread soles are made from 100% re-purposed tires which are salvaged from local mechanics and landfills. The tires are sanitized, cut, and shaped into soles for our footwear
