Home, Garden & Gourmet Expo North County Tradeshows maximize the ability for businesses to make connections with customers and other businesses. No matter what type of company you are, you can always benefit from getting to know those around you and allow others to get to know you too. In February 2013, we participated in the North County Home, Garden, and Gourmet Expo in Paso Robles. This expo is one of many organized by Simply Clear Marketing Inc., a local event management and marketing company. Working with Simply Clear Marketing Inc. is an extremely rewarding experience. From the moment that our staff was introduced to theirs, we felt an instant connection and immediately had faith in their ability to produce a fantastic expo! And truly, it was nothing short of a fantastic experience. Each day we mingled with attendees and learned more about other vendors. We were happy to “indulge” our visitors with delicious wines by Patrick Frisco of Frisco Cellars. His wines surely added another layer of indulgence at our booth! We spent mornings sipping coffee and sharing parts of the publication with everyone that stopped by. The tradeshow provided us with a new way to physically share and discuss parts of Indulge Magazine with our readers and to connect on a personal level. We each took turns visiting fellow booths and learned many things that we did not know before about the businesses present. We watched and participated in demonstrations while we toured and tasted wines and tapas from the gourmet section. Featuring a gourmet section at the expo adds a lot of excitement for attendees who loved being able to eat and taste as they perused our booths and learned more about each business. Our staff enjoyed spending time together at our booth, especially because pouring wine was really fun! If you are local to our “gourmet” industry, you should really consider joining the next expo by Simply Clear Marketing Inc. In fact, any industry interested in participating in a local expo should contact Simply Clear Marketing Inc. because their tradeshows organize an integral experience to your business that helps to build your network, connect your staff, and share your products with a broader audience. -Indulge Magazine

Interview with Simply Clear Marketing Inc. SIMPLY CLEAR MARKETING INC.
Simply Clear Marketing, Inc. (SCMI) is an event management and marketing company. It was founded in 2005 by Heather Osgood, Brian Osgood, Lani Colhouer and Bret Colhouer. The company mission is to help small businesses grow by connecting them with potential clients through events and marketing. SCMI currently produces 7 successful trade show events, including the San Luis Obispo Home Shows, the San Luis Obispo Health and Fitness Expo, the North County Home, Garden & Gourmet Expos, and the Monterey Home & Garden Expos. Our Home Shows are designed to create an environment for community members to find the products and services they need to create the home of their dreams. The San Luis Obispo Health and Fitness Expo is designed to bring together local health, fitness and wellness professionals in an effort to help further the education and involvement of the community in their health.
WHAT IS A TRADESHOW?
Trade shows provide small businesses a great opportunity to connect with clieHome and Decor
nts on a personal level. They bring together all of the resources someone might need when creating the home of their dreams. For example, if you are remodeling your kitchen, you can talk to several different contractors, cabinet specialists, flooring experts, etc. all in one day and in one place. Home shows are the best place to find the latest remodeling, landscaping and home accessory trends and tips.
WHY PARTICIPATE IN THE HOME, GARDEN, AND GOURMET EXPO?
Participating in the North County Home, Garden & Gourmet Expo allows businesses to connect with thousands of qualified clients in two days. The Expo creates a unique selling venue and increases the opportunity of a business to sell their products and services. Our quality, community trade show is dedicated to enhancing the lifestyle of North County. Our team is dedicated to helping small businesses grow. We offer a free sales and marketing class before each trade show that teaches our exhibitors how to gather more leads and turn those leads into sales at our events. We also teach our exhibitors how to
construct an attractive and effective booth display to achieve optimal results at the event. We are experience in producing successful biannual home shows in both San Luis Obispo County and Monterey County. We measure our success by the success of our clients. The Expo has a strong floor plan that is designed to get as many people to each booth as possible. We eliminate direction choices for our attendees so they can focus on the businesses and their buying decisions. Our team is always present at the event and ready to help make sure the event is a success for every business.
WHO ATTENDS THE HOME, GARDEN, AND GOURMET EXPO?
The North County Home, Garden & Gourmet Expo is mainly attended by home owners from North County, but we also draw attendance from San Luis Obispo and South County. Many homeowners bring their family, but the bulk of our attendance is by individuals and couples 35 years old and older. Our attendees are typically looking to improve their home or landscape. However, because the Expo also has the Wine and
Indulge Magazine | SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY

Gourmet Food Garden, it is fun for individuals 21 and over interested in tasting delicious food and wine. Speaking in specifics, around 48% of our attendees are over the age of 55 years old. The 36 to 54 year olds are close behind at 38%. Over 85% of our attendees are in the process of remodeling their home, with 25% of them interested in spending over $10,000 on a home project. The average household income for over 50% of our attendees is between $50,000 and $120,000.
WHAT CAN YOU LEARN AT THE HOME, GARDEN, AND GOURMET EXPO AND WHO WILL YOU MEET?
Attendees can learn about the latest trends in home remodeling and landscaping. Experts are on hand to answer any questions and demonstrate products. In the Wine & Gourmet Food Garden, attendees can learn more about the different varietals of wine. They can also sample other, unique gourmet foods. At both the cooking demonstrations and in the Wine & Gourmet Food Garden, attendees can personally meet the chefs and winemakers. The Expo is great experience for anyone because it is visually appealing, offers lots of home and garden ideas in one place, and is a treat to the palate. The cooking demonstrations teach attendees useful tricks in the kitchen. They can awe their next dinner party with the fun, tasty dishes each of our chefs has to demonstrate.

Delicate Delights in Your Springtime Garden Spring time is upon us and the smell of blossoming bulbs will soon be in the air. Have you prepared your seedlings? Now that we are inching toward the blooms it is time to catch up on your gardening here on the Central Coast! The ground is moist, prime time to do some weeding. I understand that bending over a garden in the fog is not everyone’s ideal pass time. Here is a tip to savor the experience rather than dread it; don’t tell your friends that you will have to take a rain check on a lovely day of wine tasting to do yard work. Tell them you’re gardening! You’re not pulling weeds and mowing the lawn, you’re gardening! Now that you have a flowering state of mind, grab a glass of pink lemonade let’s talk seeds. Follow the listed frost dates to guarantee the last frost has past in your area. If it hasn’t, start your seeds in a warm sunny window indoors. Fold small pieces of newspaper around the bottom of a small spice container, such as nutmeg or ginger, and secure with white masking tape. Fill the small cups with your favorite potting mix and plant 2-3 seeds in each. Keep them moist. Placing them in front of a sunny window until small seedlings appear. This insures that your seeds are not carried away by the wind or scavenged by your local wildlife. Once they have germinated, plant the entire cup in the ground in your garden! Roots will grow right through the paper and everything is biodegradable! Spring seeds to start on the Central Coast include the following:
Flowers:
Bachelor’s Buttons, Sweet Peas, Calendula, Larkspur and Nasturtiums.
Edibles:
Sugar Snap Peas, Radishes, Arugula, Lettuce and Spinach

Yogurt & You Take Advantage of its Health Benefits
Called the food of the gods by those in India for thousands of years, and hailed by kings and philosophers alike for its curative properties, yogurt certainly has a mighty reputation to behold. Legend even has it that Genghis Khan fed his army on this cultured product alone!
HOMEMADE YOGURT RECIPE Things You Will Need to Make Dairy or Non-Dairy Yogurt: • Thermometer • Saucepan • Incubator • 3-4 cups milk or non-dairy milk • Thickening agent, if you choose to create non-dairy yogurt CHOOSE AN ALTERNATIVE THICKENING AGENT, PICK ONE: • 3 tblsp tapioca starch (or flour) • 1-2 tsp gelatin You will also need 1 tbsp sugar, or sucrose-based sweetener, if you are using non-dairy milk CHOOSE A YOGURT STARTER, PICK ONE: • One packet (1/8 teaspoon) directset yogurt starter such as Traditionalflavored, Mild-flavored, or Vegetal • 3 tablespoons Heirloom-style yogurt starter such as Greek or Bulgarian • 3 tablespoons yogurt containing live active cultures (can be found at many grocery stores; an unflavored variety is best) DIRECTIONS: 1. Heat the milk to 185°F for 30 minutes. If you are using a milk alternative, heat the non-dairy milk to approximately 115°F. As the milk cools to 95°F-100°F, mix in the thickening Healthy Living
agent of your choice. If you add tapioca starch or flour, whisk the starch into a small amount of milk, then mix that portion of milk into the larger portion of milk 2. Mix well to make sure that it is combined. If you add gelatin, sprinkle the gelatin into the milk and mix well 3. Once the milk has reached 95°F100°F, add the yogurt starter and mix well to combine 4. Incubate the animal-based milk mixture at 100°F -110°F for 7 hours. Incubate the non-dairy milk mixture 108°F to 112°F for 8 to 24 hours. Coconut milk generally takes a few hours longer to culture than yogurt that is made with animal-based milk. If a sour yogurt is desired, culture the yogurt for a longer period Ways to incubate your yogurt culture without a yogurt-maker: • Put the mixture in a crock pot with the power off, cover with a towel, and place on a heating pad on a low setting • Fill a cooler with boiling water, place a sealed jar of the mixture inside, close and wrap with a towel
Developed in Central Asia somewhere around 6000BC, historians reason that beneficial bacteria cultured in various strains of yogurt may have come from the natural enzymes present in the carrying containers (animal stomachs) that were used to carry milk. Effectively, the milk was curdled and thus produced of a primitive version of the health-bestowing food we know today. However, you really don’t even need milk to take advantage of the health benefits inherent in yogurt. People have been experimenting with making many yogurt cultures; from almond and soy, to coconut milk. Try this recipe, and see how fun it can be to take charge of your own health by making your very own homemade yogurt!
3 FACTS YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT YOGURT: Yogurt is nutritionally rich in protein, calcium, riboflavin, vitamin B6 and vitamin B12, and has nutritional benefits beyond those of milk. Yogurt is mentioned by 500 BCE n the records of the ancient culture of India and Iran. The bacteria in yogurt produce lactic acid from the lactose in milk. Thus, yogurt made with active bacterial cultures produces lactase, the enzyme that allows us to digest lactose. Consequently, many people who are lactose intolerant may tolerate yogurt. -Devon Grissim

Pilates Reformer Machines: Notorious For Creating a Lean, Tall and Elegant Physique Standing over a Pilates reformer machine I’m slightly overwhelmed and unsure what is supposed to go where. What do I grab with my hands and where do I put my feet? But when I sit down on one, I immediately understand that this machine is for working your core. Instructor Denise Forren of Serenity Spa at Kennedy Club Adventure chuckles, “it looks like a Cirque du Soleil contraption” but really it’s so easy and safe that women and men of all ages can enjoy it! Pilates on a reformer machine is similar to Yoga, but the machine does the movements for you. For example, the reformer machine incorporates pushups in a totally different way. The machine moves below you and forces you to use your core. This method works your stomach muscles flat while adding increased flexibility, gracefulness, and stability. “Yoga works to elongate the muscles,” describes Forren, “Pilates does the same but it also strengthens your body in other ways.” In Pilates, movement is always happening throughout the exercise while in Yoga poses are held. It’s a great workout for athletes young and old. Denise boasts, “Pilates on the reformer machine helped one of my clients, a triathlete, shave 17 minutes off of her time!” As the sunsets over the mountains and hills, three women file in after their workdays and within seconds they are on the reformer machines, ready to go. I realized that positioning oneself on the machines must come second-nature after you’ve tried it. “Put on your high heels ladies” calls out Forren, and all three women switch position on the reformer machines, going up on their toes, their high heels. “You’re only as young as your spine is flexible” explains Forren, “Pilates helps to lengthen the short muscles and strengthen at the same time.” This is why Pilates is notorious for helping you to achieve a lean, tall, and elegant physique. Schedule a private class today at the Serenity Spa at Kennedy Club Adventure of Paso Robles (805) 226-4800. Set up a complimentary Pilates Reformer session and find out what your body is capable of. -Audrey Johns 14 Indulge Magazine | SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY

Styling for Miss USA in Paso Robles A Miss USA competition is more than just the glam and glitz that you see on television, it is a place where many young women find their voice and learn the confidence to define their personal style. What you may not know about pageants is that each contestant is expected to prepare herself for every look on stage all on her own. Amidst the many days and months of her preparation perfecting her talents and strengthening her physical and mental self for competition, a contestant spends time learning to become a pageant Spa and Beauty
stylist herself. You may wonder, “How and where would a Miss USA pageant contest learn to style herself professionally?” Many contestants travel from near and far to Paso Robles, where they are styled and coached by official stylists for Miss California USA and Miss Teen California USA 2013, Jullie Hammer and Chris Hangos of H2Hair located in Salon Roux. “After the Miss California Teen USA 2012 competition ended, I waited in line for almost 2 hours to get a chance to talk to Jullie Hammer! We set up a hair cons-
ultation and ever since then I have only gone to H2 Hair for my cut, color, style, and extensions. They helped me prepare for Miss California Teen USA 2012 where I placed 1st Runner-Up and then continued to work with me to prepare the following year for Miss California Teen USA 2013! H2 Hair is amazing and I love both Jullie and Chris!” –Cassidy Wolf, Miss California Teen USA 2013. H2Hair acts as a hair sponsor, teaching and taking care of their titleholders. in 2011, Natalie Pack who was crowned Miss California USA in 2012, and Mabelynn Capeluj who was recently crowned Miss California USA in 2013. They put together styling kits for contestants to prep with and demonstrate tips, tricks, and techniques for hair and makeup. In 2010, H2Hair began styling at the Mid-State Fair in Paso Robles where they hosted orientations, passed out prep kits, and styled contestants. Hammer, already personal stylist and friend of Miss Mid-State Fair 2010 winner, Tommy Lynn Calhoun of Paso Robles, expanded with Hangos to Miss USA pageants as did Calhoun as Miss Central Coast. H2Hair began promoting their styling techniques nationwide. “Top-notch styling, products, color, cuts, and extensions are available right here where we live” explains Hammer, “Many women dream of having good hair and are self-conscious about the hair they have. They think that they will have to travel far and pay a lot to have the hair that they want. But what many women do not realize is that quality hair treatment is available at home and in reality, many women are traveling from all over the state and further to come to our town for those services.” Miss California USA 2013, Mabelynn Capeluj travels from San Diego for the styling expertise of H2Hair. Capeluj says, “H2 Hair did not only help me with my hair for pageantry but even for my modeling career and everyday life. I always get stopped at the mall or grocery store, to be asked who I go to for my hair! For the past two years I've been going to H2 Hair and will not go to anyone else!” Styling and self-confidence go hand-in-hand. For many contestants, participating in a pageant

is about personal growth. Pageants encourage healthy living both mentally and physically. “I personally have a lot of respect for the Miss USA organization and contestants” explains Hammer, “The before and after transformation can be seen in the way that they carry themselves; you can really tell when someone feels good on stage. And each of these young women are smart, talented, and very driven.” The Miss USA organization opens many doors for contestants. For instance, Calhoun placed top twenty twice in Miss USA competitions as Miss Central Coast, and recently was hired at Traxxas. As Calhoun describes, “H2Hair teaches you more than just essential hair care, they teach you

to put your best face forward. The lessons are a great investment, because it’s something you can use every day, and it makes you walk with a little more confidence in your step.” The contestants are polished into sleek professionals who walk and talk with poise and dignity. The Mid-State Fair competition in Paso Robles is nearing and still accepting contestants. They will crown Miss Mid-State Fair on July 16, 2013. H2Hair encourages local young women to enter into the competition to learn, grow, and set new goals. TOP 5 EVERYDAY FIT TIPS: from “Miss Motivation” 1. MAKE A GOAL/ENDING DATE:
It is hard to motivate yourself to work out every day when you do not know what you’re working towards. Picking a specific goal (ie. fitting into an old pair of jeans, looking great at your wedding or reunion, or competing in a fitness competition) will give you a light at the end of the tunnel and provide you with motivation to meet your goal on that date.
2. COMMIT TO A ROUTINE:
If you are on a tight schedule, like most are; it is even more important that you are consistent with your workout schedule. Because let’s be honest, if you decide to take a nap during the time frame that you were planning go to your gym, you’re most likely never going to make it to the gym after. Write down a schedule that you can realistically keep and post it somewhere in your house just as a “friendly reminder” to yourself.
3. PEOPLE WHO WORK TOGETHER WILL WIN:
Find a workout buddy that you can depend on. You’re less likely to let your friend down than yourself. If that doesn’t get you out of bed, then carpool. Nothing makes you move faster in the morning than a friend banging at your front door as you’re still stumbling to brush your teeth!
4. SLEEP DOES MORE THAN YOU THINK:
Sleep is important to keep you healthy; it helps your immune system and stimulates muscles recovery. Sleep is also known to help people lose weight. Sleep produces hormones that help reduce the feeling of hunger and it reduces stress. So hit the pillow and get some rest!
5. HAVE FUN!
You might struggle with the first couple workouts but remember to have fun with whatever activity you do! The more you enjoy what you’re doing the more likely you’d be willing to do it again! You don’t have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great! 18 Indulge Magazine | SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY

The Newly Engaged Bride By Ariel Blake, New Bride Ooh the excitement! The happiness washed over me like the waves of the sea on the beach we were standing. He got down on one knee, grabbed my hand and pulled a little black box out of his pocket. He softly said, “Will you marry me?” The words were almost too familiar from the dozens of times that I had envisioned them escaping his lips. But nothing could compare to this; the real moment when the planets align and everything comes together in perfect sense. That’s how you know it’s meant to be! When reality kicked in, I realized what’s next: celebration! We each spent about an hour on our mobile phones calling all of our immediate family members and friends to spread the news, and undoubtedly, the first question from many of them was “When is the big day?” Then it dawned on me, it’s going to take a lot of careful planning and preparation to make the celebration perfect. This means, we’d better get started! Since I know first-hand how hectic planning an engagement and wedding can be, I have provided tips to assist you in your planning and a timeline to guide you through the rules of engagement.

Think About You Rely on Stylist’s Expertise for Your Wedding Not only is today the big day when you get to marry the love of your life, it is also a day that you should spend celebrating! Take advantage of this special time in your life to pamper yourself, indulge a little. Make-up and hair are two areas where no corners should be cut. Relax. You have a lot happening on your big day so be sure that you schedule in some “you” time. Fit you into your budget. Hiring a stylist and rely on their expertise in hair and makeup on your big day. This is one of the best gifts that you can give yourself during this time after you’ve spent months and months planning. Your wedding is truly one of the moments in your life where you want to hire the professionals. In the first instances that I began discussing my wedding with my family, they pointed out how specific and nit-picky I can be. My mother was first to tell me that she highly suggested that I leave it to the professionals. Get everything planned and executed ahead of time and rest assured that everything will be done the way that I want it. Again, this is a day that you want to be able to celebrate and you don’t want to be so busy that you forget your your most precious moments.
ay, “I do!”
Engagement: any other elements of your wedding.
Engagement Party.
Consult with your families about when the best date and time for an engagement party would be. Invite guests from your wedding guest list, including close family and friends. It is best to send out invitations at least one month before the party.
Bridal Party and Groomsmen. This step
can come before your Engagement Party if you choose but make sure that you have asked your entire wedding party before the Engagement Party occurs. Wedding

Lose Weight By Eating by Audrey Johns
For those of you who are new readers of Indulge Magazine, San Luis Obispo you may not already know that I lost 150 pounds in one year by eating all natural foods. My blog Lose Weight By Eating is a place where I give adApron made by Carrie Paul at Baubles and Beauties. Visit BaubelsandBeauties.etsy.com vice and tips for how to set personal goals that will help you live a healthy lifestyle. I get questions everyday that ask, “How do I get started?” I want to share ways to jumpstart your diet by setting goals to Lose Weight By Eating. I always give the same advice for goals, set them! Set goals rather than make rules because rules are meant to be broken! Some quick goals to get you started:
1. Drink a gallon of water each day 2. Remove all processed foods & fake sugars from my diet 3. Move your body more 4. Count your calories
So, what do all natural foods look like? They are found at your Farmer’s Markets, your favorite bakery and your friendly butcher counter. Shop the perimeter of the grocery store. Start at the produce section, then work your way toward the butcher counter, and then the bakery for some in-store baked bread. Locate your corner bakeries and stop by on the way home. Be conscious of the labels on your food; the ingredient list is so much more important than the nutrition facts. Read what’s in your food. I say, if you can pronounce everything, then it’s probably okay, if not skip it! Wondering what to make with your fresh ingredients? Check out my recipes at www. LoseWeightByEating.com for more all natural, easy recipes. So, how can you start? With breakfast of course! And what could be better than strawberry shortcake waffles in the morning? That’s right, strawberry shortcake waffles in bed! Treat your sweetheart with this sweet breakfast.
Happy Cooking! 22 Indulge Magazine | SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY
2. Chop 2 cups of strawberries and add balsamic vinegar and powdered sugar. Mix, cover with cling wrap and set aside until waffles are cooked. Adding balsamic vinegar may sound like a strange addition, but it’s an old trick to make the strawberries sweeter without adding sugar! 3. Chop the remaining 1 cup of the strawberries and place into bowl. With the back of a fork, smash the strawberries until they are mush. Add eggs, vanilla extract and almond milk, whisk and set aside. 4. In a large bowl, whisk flour, brown sugar, baking soda and salt. Fold in the strawberry mixture from Step 3 into these dry ingredients and mix completely. 5. Spoon the dough onto your waffle maker. Cook until browned, adorn with strawberry topping, and more powdered sugar if you’d like. The new craze is to replace sugar with fake sugars. I have already cut the sugar in this recipe and added strawberries to replace butter. Go all natural, skip the fake sugar…these waffles are only 135 calories each with the topping! Fresh, Homemade Recipes at Your Neighborhood Restaurant in Downtown Atascadero Have you ever asked the question, “What ever happened to the Harmony Pasta Factory?” Well, the owners of the Harmony Pasta Factory loved the growing downtown Atascadero art scene so much that in 2009 they packed up their 100 year old pasta machine and put up stakes in downtown Atascadero, just a few steps away from the historic Carlton Hotel. They opened up a little 14 seat restaurant called Fig Good Food where they serve healthy, all natural food. While in Harmony, the Pasta Factory specialized in several different types of pasta, including smaller pastas like penne. When they moved and opened Fig Good Food the owners chose their three most popular pastas and concentrated on Mediterranean cuisine. They now make linguini, fettuccini and spaghetti. This year, they even had special pasta for Valentine’s Day that was tinted red and pink by using tomatoes and beats! Owner Christina Dillow, better
known as Chris, is more than a restaurateur; she prides herself and her restaurant in helping the community. Fig’s produce comes from Farmers Touch CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) a source, Dillow explains, that offers the best of the best produce, picked the day it hits your plate and full of wonderful local flavor. Chris adds “neighborhood” style to her kitchen. She prides herself in focusing on healthy organic fruits and vegetables and uses just an itty bitty little refrigerator for small perishables. She says, “This proves that the day you eat the tomato in the salad, is the day the tomato was picked, and the day that the chicken was roasted and of course the day the delicious pasta was made!” A few steps from Fig Good Food is their neighbor, The Barrel Room, a lovely wine bar that Fig delivers to free of charge. Looking for the best wine to pair with your Fig Good Food pasta? Ask the Barrel Room to point
you in the direction of a perfect pairing from their variety of local wines. Fig Good Food’s menu showcases handmade, local ingredients at their best; everything is 100% all natural and made from scratch! Some of their recipes date back generations in Chris’s family, like marinara sauce and pesto recipes from her mother and a pasta recipe that is so old, it’s unknown when it was created! Traditional recipes are paired with new artisan creations by Chef Mike Standerry to give Fig’s menu a new spin with local ingredients. They have amazing pies, pasta, sandwiches and of course their beautiful rotisserie chickens; salad selections with toppings like chicken and goat cheese, sherry or citrus oregano vinaigrette. Think of the delicious creations and fresh ingredients in the kitchen at Fig Good Food next time you visit downtown Atascadero! Fig is located at 5945 Traffic Way and can be reached at (805) 460-9900. -Audrey Johns

Would You Like to Meet Rosie? from the book
My Name is Rosie Snippets of a Corgi’s Everyday Life in Her Own Words
“Would you like to meet Rosie?” I hear my Mom ask. She opens the car door and I jump out. There’s a new lady, she pets me and tells me that she likes my book, “What a good writer you are Rosie, I would like to tell people about your book, what do you think?” I wag my tail; it is big and fluffy and everyone loves it, I do that to tell the lady that I like her. Rosie, a Pembroke Welsh Corgi, is a local celebrity in San Luis Obispo. Her owner Ruth Goodnow (pen name Kate Updike O’Connor) wrote a charming book about Rosie’s early life called My Name is Rosie: Snippets of a Corgi’s Everyday Life in Her Own Words. Rosie shares her short stories like “Get That Fly” and “I’m a Good Dog” with her readers and also shares some of her profits with Woods Humane Society in San Luis Obispo. Goodnow, who shares Rosie’s words and experiences with us, adopted Rosie eight years ago. Rosie’s litter was special. Undocked Pembroke Welsh Corgis are rarely found. Upon meeting Rosie I couldn’t imagine her without her big, fluffy and very expressive tail! Perhaps her tail is what gives this unique pup her voice. There are many things to love about My Name is Rosie: the charming cover, the beautiful illustrations and the heartwarming short stories. My Name is Rosie has been read on the radio and printed in the local newspaper. Rosie has shared her stories and eager affection with groups of children and soon at local nursing homes. My Name is Rosie is a “dog lover’s book,” says Goodnow, “people ask if it’s a children’s book, but it’s really for everyone.” Goodnow found that writing in Rosie’s voice and point of view gave her a different kind of freedom as a writer. She shares fourteen snippets of a daily life of a corgi in this fifty-page book. Goodnow and Rosie sent a signed copy to Queen Elizabeth and shortly after received a letter of thanks in return from one of the Queen’s ladies-in-waiting. Both like to lovingly boast that their book is floating around Buckingham Palace! For readers interested in owning a Corgi, Goodnow stressed, “If your lifestyle doesn’t support giving your dog lots of exercise every day, then I wouldn’t get a corgi.” Goodnow explains, “A Corgi is a high energy breed that is very affectionate and likes to eat!” This, she describes, stresses the importance of the need for exercise. Rosie takes walks, chases her ball and frisbee every day, and lives a very active lifestyle, rain or shine. Rosie shares some of her more athletic experiences in chapters like “In a Minute” and “Riding Around in the Car,” relishing in her daily game of catch and chasing birds at the park. My Name is Rosie reminds us to keep it simple, always be enthusiastic, and appreciate the small, everyday things in life. You can find a copy of My Name is Rosie at www.mynameisrosie.com. All books are signed by the author and Rosie herself and are illustrated by local artist, Chloe White. -Audrey Johns 24 Indulge Magazine | SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY

Becoming Marilyn Monroe An Interview with Local Actress Ashley Saint'Onge Clark
When did you gain interest in performing and theatre arts? I grew up in San Miguel with my mom, dad, and brother. I attended Lillian Larsen until I started attending school in Paso Robles in 7th grade, after transferring to Flamson Middle School. From a young age, I took many dance classes (ballet, tap, jazz,) choir classes and theatre. I took my first real acting class in 6th grade, and have taken any that I had the opportunity for ever since. I did local dinner theatre plays, and finally in high school, my teachers helped to point me in the right direction to make acting a real career! That was also when I discovered Pioneer Players; San Luis Obispo County is loaded with talented, amazing entertainers and directors, not to mention all the great crew members, stage managers, photographers, you name it!
beautiful like her. I rented five Marilyn films at a time when Video Choice used to offer 5-for-5-for-5: Five VHS movies for five nights for $5. I performed “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend” in a Variety Night at PRHS as a sophomore. After that, I didn’t actually step into the character again until this past May. I saw a casting call that asked for Marilyn Monroe look-a-likes and impersonators for a contest. The winner would get $1000 and a chance to play Marilyn in an indie movie, so I finally caved and bought my first Marilyn wig! I did not win that contest, but it was the new beginning to my Marilyn story! 2012 marked the 50th year that has passed since Marilyn’s tragic death in 1962, so Marilyn auditions and jobs started popping up everywhere, and I have been doing my best to ride the wave and see where it takes me!
quite that much time (a little over an hour with a pre-styled wig,) but it does take time and patience, and it helps to enjoy the process, to indulge in the luxury of applying make-up! It also helps to learn her make-up artist Whitey’s secrets about how and why he did her make-up a certain way. I adapt his tips and tricks to my own face and try to shade and highlight to create the same dimensions. It’s somewhat technical, but learning techniques, has helped me get out of the same old make-up look I have done since I started wearing make-up! The main tool I use to get into any character is the voice. For Marilyn specifically, I start with a deep exhale, bringing my shoulders forward. She was breathy and sultry as she whispered much of everything she said, so the breathing is important.
When did you begin impersonating Marilyn Monroe?
How do you use your personal talents in theatre performance to bring Marilyn Monroe to life?
Can you tell Indulge Magazine readers about the joy of your first experience impersonating Marilyn. Where was your first gig?
I have always loved Marilyn, and my dad was my biggest Marilyn-abler, and still is. He had a three-pane poster of her smiling face in the garage and I would just stare at it and wonder if I could ever grow up and be
The make-up is a big part of getting into her character. She once said “It takes me five hours to become Marilyn.” With that in mind, I can almost get into character as her the same way she did! I don’t spend
I had my friend Mallory curl and pin my hair (which has always been pretty long) to my head so it looked shorter and more like Marilyn’s. I only had a basic understanding of how she did her make-up, so I did the

usual caricature make-up that you tend to see on Halloween costume packages. I don’t remember how I found the pink dress, but looking back I flinch at the white gloves and silver heels I wore. Then again, I was on a budget, so you do what you can! Turned out that it didn’t need to be perfect – it was experience, and I still draw on that performance for ideas! I asked my friends, Mallory, Laura and Julia, to perform the number with me dressed like men in tuxedos. We added some comedy to it, and we had a lot of fun! Where do you usually impersonate Marilyn? I go where the jobs are! It seems that there is one Marilyn event after another – her 86th birthday on June 1st, the 50th anniversary of her death on August 4th and 5th…I have worked a Marilyn-based book release, a “Marilyn’s 86th Birthday” celebration, a live impersonator contest on international television (I won!) I have also performed a few birthday parties,“Happy Birthday” was,
after all, one of her most popular songs! I also got to perform at the Chinese New Year celebration for one of China’s main television networks, ICN TV / Tianjin TV which aired on February 9th on all ICN channels. I will also be traveling to China for a tour this year! I perform at parties and events, commercials, you name it! Marilyn fans are everywhere, so she is an appropriate and exciting guest at just about any occasion, and people love taking photos with “her!” The gigs have taken me to a few common Marilyn-spotting places like Universal Studios and the Hollywood Walk of Fame, but some of my favorite pictures were taken inside a restaurant in Duarte called The Old Spaghetti Factory. A lot of things like this have fallen sweetly into place since I started playing Marilyn. I take it as a sign that I am where I am supposed to be, when I am meant to be there. Have you ever tried to impersonate another character or is it only Marilyn?
I also impersonate Lucille Ball, (I Dream of) Jeannie / Barbara Eden, Audrey Hepburn, Carol Burnett, Judy Garland, Grace Kelly, Daisy Mae, a few Disney princesses, the list goes on and on, but Marilyn is really the one closest to my heart. I like to play people whom I admire, it gives me a special way to learn about them and how they lived their lives and found their success. As an actress, it helps me to get into as many characters as I have time for. How can readers contact you to learn more about your Experience and booking gigs with Marilyn?

San Luis Obispo International Film Festival Words from Wendy Eidson, Festival Director
VISION
The SLOIFF grows in importance as a successful regional event, providing cultural and economic benefit to San Luis Obispo County. By promoting the concept that “MOVIES MATTER! and that the art of film is a cultural force with the capacity to transform lives of individuals and society at large, we will nurture new filmmakers, attract new audiences, and develop film-related youth outreach and education programs. We will expand collaboration with other community non-profits, and the local hospitality and wine industries with events that emphasize the uniqueness of our area.
WHY SLO?
There are thousands of film festivals in North America but few have the easy access San Luis Obispo does to Los Angeles-based filmmakers, the movie capital of the US. The growth of the wine industry in SLO County has helped it become a destination for travelers looking for a fun getaway that is a days drive or less away from their homes. SLO County draws tourists from big cities in the north, east and south making it an excellent location for a film festival at a typically quiet time of the year, early March.
