A typical application for CANblue II is the wireless connection of CAN segments via Bluetooth and wireless system access using a notebook or handheld service unit. However, areas where an extremely reliable connection is required, such as the networking of rotating or mobile system parts, can also be implemented using CANblue II. Thanks to the use Bluetooth technology, built from the ground up on encrypted transmission mechanisms that are resistant to external interference, CANblue II is perfect for this kind of application.Bluetooth’s FHSS process, also used in CANblue II, changes the frequency at which messages are transmitted about 1600 times a second. If
one of the 79 channels used experiences interference, this fault is detected and the message is resent in another frequency range. The available bandwidth thereby is used very sparingly, so that multiple different Bluetooth systems can work in parallel without noticeably interfering with one another. The problems caused by overlapping WLAN systems and the limited number of WLAN channels, also considering the required channel spacing, is nearly unknown in Bluetooth. Even WLAN systems overlapping with Bluetooth in the immediate vicinity only interfere with the operation of the Bluetooth network to a negligible extent, since only a few of the 79 Bluetooth channels overlap the WLAN frequency band. Thus at most the transmission performance of an overlapping system, whether WLAN or Bluetooth, may be reduced due to the message retransmissions required. Its broad power supply voltage range of 9 to 30 VDC, compact construction, and fastening holes in the housing all simplify the integration of the device into existing systems. The CAN interface is implemented in compliance with ISO 11898-2 and has a DSub 9 connector that meets the requirements of CiA 3031. Upon request, the CANblue II can also be provided in an IP67 variant.l screw-on antenna that supports transmission distances of up to 300 meters, depending on spatial conditions. The radio signal quality can be read out using Bluetooth to monitor the connection quality

Advanced Research in Microelectronics with the VHX
Keyence’s VHX-1000 digital microscope allows French researchers to observe surfaces at 1000x magnification, capture images as large as 100 megapixels, and share these images all with very little effort.
T
he Montpellier Laboratory of Computer Science, Robotics, and Microelectronics (LIRMM) is a joint research unit of the University of Montpellier 2 (UM2) and France’s National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS). It conducts research in the field of sciences and technologies for information, communication and systems. The applications are varied and include medicine, with the implantation of ASICs to compensate for neurological disorders or paralysis (functional electrical stimulation). The objective of LIRMM’s Microelectronics Department (MIC) is to propose innovative solutions that have a genuinely disruptive impact on current approaches. The MIC Department’s operations range from the design to the testing of low-end integrated systems (electrical and/or transistors) to high-end integrated systems (architectures, systems). The MIC Department also conducts research on adaptive architectures - microprocessor systems

interconnected by redundant networks for fault tolerance purposes - as well as cross-cutting issues such as digital security, reliability and resilience. «We work with companies on prototypes and manufacturing processes that are not always stable. Failures are common and our job is to analyse every potential cause of these failures, such as poor traces and connections and the presence of dust. These highly detailed observations require a high level of magnification and high image quality,» explains Laurent de Knyff of LIRMM’s MIC Department. Generally, the chips used by LIRMM measure 2-3 mm in size and are made using 65 nm technology, meaning that the gate of the MOS transistor (a basic building block of microelectronics) measures 65 nm long. The VHX digital microscope suits our accuracy needs perfectly. It captures extremely sharp, high-resolution images easily and quickly. We use a 100 W VHZ lens, most often at 1000x magnification.» The VHX features a 16-bit HDR function that uses 16 bits-per-pixel encoding and unique HDR (high dynamic range) technology to create extremely sharp, perfectly exposed images (neither too bright nor too dark) regardless of the contrast of the target.
«One thing that we really like about the VHX is that it’s a digital tool that runs like a PC. It’s clear, simple menus are intuitive and enable us to create highly useful automated functions. We use the real-time on-screen measurements and particularly like the image stitching function, which allows us to create large images of ASICs in just a few dozen seconds regardless of the image size. We then archive these images for later analysis. Because ASICs are fragile and we want to limit their handling to a minimum, this is a major plus point,» adds Mr de Knyff. The VHX-1000 produces panoramic images as large as 10,000 by 10,000 pixels, or 100 megapixels. That translates to a fiftyfold increase in the size of the high-magnification field of view (normal field of view: 1600 by 1200 pixels). This is made possible by the market’s most powerful ultra-fast automatic image stitching function (2D stitching). When the image stitching button is pressed, the stage shifts and images are captured and automatically spliced together in real time. «In addition, MEMS and certain other parts we analyse are not flat. The VHX supports automatic adjustments to achieve a large depth-of-field and produce sharp, highquality images regardless of differences in depth,» adds Mr de Knyff.
Getting to grips with the microscope was very simple. «The half-day of training we received from one of Keyence’s sales engineers was sufficient to allow us to start getting the images we needed. I’m sure that, after two hours of training, a six-year-old would be able to produce quality images with the microscope. The optical adjustments are a little more complex of course, but you shouldn’t hesitate to use the VHX’s automatic adjustments. They allow you to play with the lighting and other parameters,» says Mr de Knyff. A simple way to share high-resolution images «In addition to its efficiency for our scientific observations, the VHX allows us to capture clear images and share them with colleagues, industrial partners and the scientific community. Our old method was amateurish and consisted of taking pictures through the eyepiece of an old microscope. It was both time consuming and inconvenient and the images were not as good,» concludes Mr de Knyff. ww1.keyence.com/PRGGBVH

Record-sized toothpaste production needs massive geared motors
The new UNIMIX systems, driven by NORD industrial geared motors: at a record volume of 10,000 l each, they form the world’s biggest plant for the batch production of toothpaste.
E
KATO, manufacturer of customized industrial agitators, has scaled up the largest model from its UNIMIX line to more than double the size, thereby implementing the largest discontinuous toothpaste production system in the world. Two mixers, each with 10,000 liters effective volume, produce 6,000 to 11,000 kg of toothpaste per hour, depending on the product concentration. Thus, the output has been more than tripled. The drive specialist NORD DRIVESYSTEMS supported the development of the new record-sized systems. Many manufacturers with a global reach are interested in concentrating production capacities in just a few places. The hygiene and personal care industries certainly follow this trend. Accordingly, there is a demand for ever larger batch sizes for products such as toothpaste. Furthermore, a larger range of variants is produced at each site. Therefore, modern plants must be capable of producing large volumes while at the same time providing maximum versatility. With this complex task in its sights, EKATO SYSTEMS from Schopfheim at the southern reaches of the Black Forest has constructed a new plant for the discontinuous production of toothpaste. The maximal capacity of toothpaste production plants

used to lie between 4,000 and 5,000 liters, with outputs of approximately 2,000 to 3,000 liters hourly. Continuous or batch production is possible. Continuous systems enable high throughput but are not very versatile with regard to product changes; since different ingredients sometimes require their own dispensing and blending technology, recipe changes often bring about conversions and readjustments. It also comes into play that toothpaste cannot easily be reworked when it is not sufficiently homogeneous. The biggest challenge with continuous plants is ensuring the uniform dispersion of active ingredients such as sodium fluoride, even after changes to the dispensing systems. On the other hand, the production rate of existing discontinuous plants cannot be significantly increased without major modifications in plant equipment. In order to meet the demands of a toothpaste manufacturer, EKATO therefore had to construct larger plants. Toothpaste production systems basically consist of an evacuable vessel with an agitator, a homogenizer, and various dispensing systems for the introduction of ingredients into the process. Liquid ingredients are either measured and then vacuum-inserted into the vessel or dispensed by gravimetric methods. Powders and thickeners to increase viscosity can be added via the integrated

homogenizer or drawn into the vessel through a valve at its base. For larger mixer dimensions, EKATO had to determine the components’ dosage and dispersion times, blend and homogenization times, vacuum values, and the necessary agitator and homogenizer performances. The agitator and homogenizer were configured according to the mixing performance equation for mixing technology. Based on its extensive experience, EKATO determines the power coefficient “Ne” (or Newton number) for each respective impeller and the product’s specific viscosity curve. In addition to the product concentration, the equation furthermore contains the speed and the diameter – with the exponents 2, 3, or even 5, these values are especially important. That is why the correct configuration of the agitator and homogenizer drives is crucial. The drive supplier NORD was required to configure motors and gear units with the performance according to EKATO’s calculations, and to make them as efficient and durable as possible. Since the agitator drive is installed on top of the production mixer, it should be as compact as possible despite the high performance required. This application, which depends on homogeneous product quality, calls for speed and continuity. The radial and axial
loads on the agitator shaft, which are very high due to the high product viscosity, must be taken into account for the drive configuration. NORD DRIVESYSTEMS configured and supplied two 250 kW motors with industrial gear units which provide nominal output torques of 242,000 Nm. NORD is the only manufacturer worldwide to produce such extremely large industrial gear units in this power range in the proven one-piece UNICASE housing. Hence, the type SK 15407 3-stage helical bevel gear units, though of an impressive size, are still relatively compact as the UNICASE design allows for larger rolling bearings which can accommodate higher forces.

as well for high data rate needs since they are not affected by electro-magnetic interferences. Now that Ethernet has become a standard for on-board communication, rolling stocks tends to embed more and more fiber optic connectivity, even in the harshest locations, such as inter-vehicle. Weight saving is also a big concern for train manufacturers, and in this regard, the use of fiber optic cables is a definite advantage. SOURIAU’s VGE1 ELIO bayonet-lock connector is available in three different layouts and shell sizes – four ELIO® contacts, eight ELIO® contacts and 12 ELIO® contacts. A two-contact version will eventually be released. These connectors are robust enough to be fitted on train roofs, under train bodies or just about anywhere else on the outside of trains. The 838 ELIO® connector features a screw lock and an 8-contact layout. A 24-contact version, designed specifically for inter-vehicle connections, will be released in a few months. Both the VGE1 ELIO and the 838 ELIO® may also be used for track applications.
ELIO®´s fiber optic technology successfully meets railway standards for a reliable and easy-to-use connectivity solution and gives confidence to operators as well as train and equipment manufacturers.
ELIO® is an innovative optical contact, combining simplicity of use and a high reliability level. ELIO® is very easy to implement, to terminate (unclear) and to clean. It is compatible with single mode, multimode, and plastic fiber and provides reliable optical performances in extreme environments. Combined with highly ruggedized and railway qualified connectors, ELIO®´s fiber optic technology is the solution to handle the most stringent environmental and mechanical conditions, like damped heat, extreme temperatures, vibration at low frequency as well as shocks, hundreds of mating cycles, and exposure to typical railway fluids and lubricants.

More Information Lighter, brighter, longerlived:New generation of robust fluorescent lights for hazardous areas. R. STAHL’s new line of light fittings for use in Ex zone 1/21 and 2/22 hazardous areas achieves better energy efficiency than comparable devices and provides approximately 10% more luminous intensity. New EXLUX 6001 luminaires also feature a design that is considerably more compact, stable, and torsion-resistant than their EXLUX 6000 predecessors. While more than one million of the long-proven EXLUX 6000 lights have been deployed worldwide over the last twenty-odd years, the new generation now meets increasing user demand for a similarly economic, yet enhanced product with improved technical features reflecting the most current state of the art. Depending on their performance class, the 6001 luminaires are a quarter to a third lighter than their predecessor models and many competing products. In many cases, this amounts to a decisive extension of the application range that saves costs by making extra specifications unnecessary. In order to facilitate a step-by-step exchange of existing EXLUX pendants, the installation of the new units remains fully compatible to the predecessor series. Moreover, swiftly removable replacement parts ensure quick and easy maintenance. Like before, the new lights are available with customer-specific modifications on request. In addition, R. STAHL provides especially cost-efficient standard models with a power consumption of 18 W, 36 W, or 58 W that are available at short notice. Featuring 4 mm² cage clamp terminals, 5-core through-wiring, and a full-phase safety shutdown, these models are adequately equipped for the majority of
all typical applications. The new series fully complies with the requirements of all current industry standards. Notably, the new silicone-based foamed gasket has been optimised for maximum durability, as stipulated by IEC 60079. This sealing solution, which is resistant to various chemicals as well as UV radiation, the fitting’s hinge, and a newly designed central lock reliably ensure IP67 protection over many years. 6001 series lights are available as of now. However, more products are due to follow in the new EXLUX generation: in 2013 and 2014, the program will be extended both by optional accessories, such as pole mount adapters, and by additional models such as emergency lights, lights with an address module, and T5 lights for use in zone 2. Moreover, LED lights from R. STAHL will also be available soon, though these will be based on a completely different housing and equipped with materials and features optimised for LED technology.

solution had a ready-made template for this micro PLC was a great advantage,” says P-A Claveroth, Sales and Marketing Director at Triplesign. “We simply connect the Netbiter unit to the Millenium 3 and all parameters show up immediately in a web browser.” A Netbiter EasyConnect gateway is connected to the Millenium 3 micro PLC in the field. The Netbiter gateway communicates with a cloud-based data center called Netbiter Argos. This data center collects and stores the data from the field equipment. By logging in to Netbiter Argos, users can see the exact status of the Millenium 3 and thereby their own devices in a web dashboard. They can also get alarms and notifications whenever something happens.“This combined solution will be very useful for applications in segments such as air conditioning, access control, heat pumps, water and air treatment, waste treatment, lifting and handling, medical equipment and pump management,”says Henrik Arleving, Product Line Manager, Remote Management at HMS. “These segments are very suitable for remote management and Netbiter offers users and service engineers a quick way to improve control of the applications and reduce costs.” “In the frame of remote management, HMS’s Netbiter solution contributes to make the most out of the Millenium 3 Smart logic controller as it gets it connected from anywhere, anytime, 24/7.
Thanks to these new additions, users of SensoPart’s subminiature F 10 series can now cover numerous applications with just one model. Not only are different functional principles available (proximity switches with adjustable background suppression, fixed focus proximity switches with background suppression, throughbeams and retro-reflective light barriers), but there is also a choice of several light sources (laser, red light LED, blue light LED).
Crouzet and HMS present joint solution for monitoring the Millenium 3 logic controller over the web. Crouzet, a leading manufacturer of automation control components, has decided to use HMS Industrial Network’s Netbiter as remote management solution for their latest generation of micro PLCs – the Millenium 3 Smart. This provides users of the micro PLC with instant access to data on their field equipment over the web. An example of an early adopter is the Swedish-based company Triplesign who uses the solution to monitor alternating billboards. With Netbiter, they can see the status of each billboard and even remotely control which message to display. “I have been working with the Millenium 3 Logic Controllers for some time and the fact that the Netbiter
which means it can be adjusted to different objects and applications without modifications. Its maximum scanning range of 70 mm is unique for this sensor size. Fixed focus proximity switches – also equipped with background suppression – are also available with scanning ranges of 15mm, 30 mm or 50 mm. Background suppression in F 10 sensors from SensoPart is based on distance measurement using an ASIC array. This functional principle enables highly-accurate spatial resolution so that objects can be reliably distinguished in front of light backgrounds or reflective machine parts – whatever the colour and surface finish. Measuring just 21.1 x 14.6 x 8 mm3 and weighing only 3 g, the tiny proximity switches can be mounted directly on a robotic gripper and are therefore ideal for pick-and-place applications. They are perfect for space-saving installation in handling systems, assembly robotics and highly-integrated machines or as a low-cost alternative to fibre-optic systems. In addition to the aforementioned proximity switch with red transmitter LED, SensoPart also offers a blue light version (fixed focus 30 mm). The F 10 blue light has been specially developed for detection of strongly light-absorbing objects such as solar cells. Another new member of the F 10 series is the LED retro-reflective light barrier FR 10-R with a high operating range (up to 1.6 m) and teach-in function.
LED proximity switch FT 10-RH: small enough to fit on every gripper SensoPart has expanded its subminiature sensor series. The range now offers LED sensors, in addition to laser sensors, including a proximity switch with adjustable background suppression and a blue light version for strongly lightabsorbing objects. The LED proximity switch FT 10-RH is a special highlight amongst the new sensors: it offers adjustable background suppression

Success principle flexibility: photoelectric and ultrasonic sensors with the same design
The U500 ultrasonic sensor completes Baumer’s new performance category.
T
he story of the new performance class continues to be written. With the U500 sensor, Baumer now expands the portfolio of NextGen sensors to include ultrasonic technology. The new sensors are identical in design and size with their series O500 electronic counterparts. This OneBox design also applies to every available sensor principle and offers the user maximum flexibility during the planning phase. Not only that: Also with subsequent modifications in a system’s requirements profile, the sensors can be exchanged quickly and easily without any additional conversion measures. In addition to the U500 and O500, the smaller O300 completes Baumer’s new performance category for applications with limited space. While the photoelectric sensors are predestined for applications with very small objects and high speed thanks to their precise light spot, the great advantage of ultrasonic sensors is that they detect almost every object.

They do not depend on color, characteristics or transparency, even under harsh conditions with large amounts of dirt.
The U500 has a special place in the range of ultrasonic sensors due to its versatile performance. With 1000 mm, it offers the longest range in its class, with many application possibilities. The fast response time also increases flexibility in applications. A further advantage is the narrow, symmetrical sonic beam. It has a diameter of only 80 mm at an object distance of 500 mm. This allows the U500 to be used in applications with very cramped spaces. Furthermore, the sensor is distinguished by extraordinary reliability, which is based on large excess gain. Reliable operation is therefore guaranteed. The robust housing (IP67) and new transducer also contribute to making the U500 an extremely resilient sensor. It is unaffected by dirt, water droplets or even cleaning agents. The versatility is also shown by the availability of the U500 in three sensor principles: As a proximity switch, distance measuring sensor and reflective light barrier.
