Rue Mapp promoting the Outdoor Experience
Campground operators attending thist week’s KOA Convention and Trade Expo in Las Vegas will be the first in the country to see Cavco’s newest off-grid, solar-powered park model cottage.
A University of Wyoming survey finds that 78% of visitors to America’s national parks and forests are white, compared to 9% Hispanic and 7% black.
“This is the first of a new generation of off-grid, solar powered park models,” said Joseph Stegmayer, president and CEO of Phoenix, Ariz.-based Cavco Industries Inc. The company’s newest unit is “the most environmentally friendly park model cottage on the market,” he added.

The association will continue to exhibit at shows in Chantilly, VA (Washington, DC), Richmond, Va, and Timonium, MD and will move its participation from a show in Hampton Roads, VA to a show in Virginia Beach, VA. a big plus for VCA,” said President Karl Littman. “We are able to extend our marketing reach in a very cost effective way. The value of the Virginia Campground Directory and the strong attraction of camping in Virginia are proven and this additional presence at the shows is sure to draw more campers to Virginia,” said Littman. In a somewhat historic move, the association elected a number of new board members including Virginia State Parks Director Joe Elton. Six Virginia state parks have become full members of the VCA and National ARVC and each was represented at the VCA

While there is no specific guarantee of a board seat for a state park representative, the members felt that adding State Parks Director Elton to the board will assure that the new partnership between VCA and the state parks will start off on solid ground. It is expected that during the coming year, the association will work to further expand camping promotion in surrounding states and within Virginia in order to capture a larger share of the region’s camping and RVing visitors. In addition to Elton, other new VCA Board Members include Phil Upton of the Best Holiday Travel Park/Best Parks in America, Virginia Beach; Kim Beveridge, Hidden Acres CG, Bowling Green, VA; and Kathi Martin, Deer Trail Park, Wytheville, VA. Serving with Karl will be Vice President Ray Barker, Secretary Kristina Crall, Treasurer Phil Upton, and Board Chairman Steve Albrecht. In other actions at the annual meeting, the membership discussed adding a Richmond-based lobbyist to assist the association in achieving some legislative and regulatory objectives including addressing inconsistencies in state submetering rules, monitoring and containing increases in state license, permits and other fees, expanding road signage rules and keeping logo sign costs under control, and in working to increase state funding for tourism promotion targeted towards attracting RVers and campers to Virginia. The membership voted to establish a task force to survey all Virginia members for their opinion on engaging a lobbyist and to develop a issues agenda and then to interview candidates for the position. The announcement came during the first day of the annual KOA International Convention in Las Vegas, Nevada. Monday's announcement by Schleib and Sutherland is the result of a longstanding operational relationship between the two world camping industry leaders. "In the next 24 months, we're both going to work to make KampSight even better for KOA, and that will also mean many improvements and advances for our parks in Australia," Schleib said. He said he expects 600 campgrounds will be using the improved operating system worldwide within the next two years. "It's all about making managing campgrounds quicker, easier and ultimately better for our owners and our guests," said Sutherland. "By pooling our resources from two different parts of the world, we'll be able to accomplish that goal."
The award came on the first day of KOA's annual International Convention at the South Point Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. The Rising Star Award is presented annually to a KOA owner who has been part of the Kampgrounds of America system for less than five years, yet exhibits all of the superior business habits and practices of a much more seasoned owner. "We welcome dozens of new owners to the KOA system every year," said KOA Vice President of Franchisee Operations Jef Sutherland. "It is truly a big

PRESS RELEASE
ARVC launches Online Members Only Magazine DENVER, Colo., Nov. 3, 2011 – The National Association of RV Parks and Campgrounds (ARVC) has moved to the forefront of member communications with the ARVC Voice, an online members-only magazine that features news stories as well as embedded videos that highlight best practices and innovations in the campground business. “We’re using cutting edge technology with one of the leading online magazine companies,” said Paul Bambei, ARVC president and CEO, adding that the inaugural issue of ARVC Voice was emailed to the association’s members on Monday. ARVC Voice, which replaces the ARVC Report newsletter, will be emailed to association members 11 times a year, with a single issue for the December/January period. Each issue of ARVC Voice will be produced by Evanne Schmarder, a videographer and digital marketing expert who previously reported and edited the ARVC Report. “ARVC Voice is not a newsletter, but an online magazine,” Bambei said,

adding that it is being produced in a flipbook format using Zmags software. “This format is very easy to read, easy to navigate and very intuitive,” he said. “We think ARVC members will be pleased.” While ARVC Voice is delivered in an electronic format, individual pages, sections or the entire issue can be saved, downloaded and/or printed. It also has a built-in search function to enable members to search for particular words or phrases. Advertisements are hyperlinked to each advertiser’s website, which is a desirable benefit to companies interested in marketing their products and services to campgrounds, RV parks and resorts across the country, Bambei said.

the best content from the previous four months. Look for this first printed issue next spring,” said Bambei.
“While media experts claim electronic publishing is clearly the most efficient and widely adopted method of trade industry communication today, we recognize many members still like a printed version from ARVC. For that reason, we are committed to sending our members three printed issues of ARVC Voice in 2012, recapping a collection of
“We are asking ARVC members to consider shooting video at their parks focusing on their own unique innovations and breaking news,” Schmarder said, adding that a section of ARVC.org is being developed where members can upload content they would like to be considered for publication in ARVC Voice.
Schmarder said each issue of ARVC Voice will be developed to provide news stories that are not available elsewhere in print or online publications serving the campground industry, with a heavy focus on human interest stories and best practices about ARVC members themselves. It will also contain useful information about member benefits, green initiatives and the latest information involving

ARVC Conference to feature experts in staff training and organizational psychology DENVER, Nov. 7, 2011 – Campers want entertainment. Management wants profits. So how do we discover the sweet spot where these two goals meet and create staff training models that meet both ends? That will be the topic of Karen Brucoli Anesi’s seminar on human resources training at the Outdoor Hospitality Conference & Expo, which takes place Nov. 30th to Dec. 2nd in Savannah, Ga.\ “I’m going to ask them to apply information differently so staff changes how they see their jobs and their performance,” said Anesi, a regent and instructor of guest relations and conflict management at the National School of Campground Management who co-owns Lock 30 Woodlands RV Resort and Campground in Lisbon, Ohio. One of the things she’ll discuss is formalizing and reinforcing “lessons of the day” through team huddles. “This isn’t significantly different from what WalMart uses to pull ‘associates’ together with a cheer when they send their diverse slate of teens, senior citizens, mid-level managers and seasonal part-time help all down the same road together to sell bananas, skateboards,
snow tires and shampoo,” Anesi said. “Every campground has that which unites its staff in the overall mission. Yet training seldom embraces that. I’m hoping my class will be able to demonstrate the value of playful, recreational, ongoing staff training.” And if the human resource challenges at your park need more than a different approach to staff training, you might also be interested in attending Dr. Becky Winkler’s seminar on team development.
seminars, more than twice the number of any previous ARVC conference. Other seminar topics will include marketing through social and mainstream media, Google analytics, risk management and prevention, employment and cyber liability issues,
as well as electric car charging and other green opportunities for campgrounds. It will also feature the campground industry’s largest tradeshow, with vendors showcasing the latest products and services for park operators across the country.
A Charlotte, N.C.-based organizational psychologist, Dr. Winkler plans to demonstrate exercises that can help staff members improve their communication with each other without hurting each other’s feelings or creating tension in the work environment. One of the biggest problems in any business, she said, is a lack of communication or a failure to communicate effectively. Dr. Winkler’s session will empower park operators to improve communication among their various team members. Held at the Westin Savannah Harbor Resort & Spa and the Savannah International Trade and Convention Center, ARVC’s Conference and Expo will feature 43 educational

Study says Outdoor Industry is worth $1 Trillion According to a press release by Southwick Associates and the National Fish & Wildlife Foundation (NFWF), a study by Southwick commissioned by the foundation reveals that the great outdoors and historic preservation generate a conservative estimate of more than $1 trillion in total economic activity and support 9.4 million jobs each year. “As a former Secretary of the Interior, governor, senator, and mayor, I have witnessed firsthand how historic preservation, conservation and outdoor recreation result in tremendous benefits to our nation’s economy,” said Dirk Kempthorne. “This study is a valuable tool for reaffirming and quantifying those benefits.” Highlights from the report include: • In 2006, according to the Outdoor Foundation, the total contribution from outdoor sports in the United States was nearly $730 billion per year, generating more than 6.4 million jobs and $99 billion in federal and state tax revenues. This includes hunting, fishing, wildlife viewing, hiking, camping, snow sports, paddle sports and bicycling.

• In 2006, the combined spending effect of hunting, fishing and wildlife watching associated with National Forest Service land totaled $9.5 billion in annual retail sales, supported 189,400 jobs and provided $1.01 billion in annual federal tax revenues. • Every million dollars invested in residential historic rehabilitation generates approximately 36 jobs, $1.24 million in income and nearly $200,000 in state and local taxes. This should come as no surprise in Idaho where outdoor recreation is a way of life, but when you start seeing the word "trillion" tossed out, it should get more people's attention how important outdoor recreation is to the state and national economy. http://voices.idahostatesman.com

Surprising New sources for Carbon Dioxide A recent Nature Geoscience article by David Butman and Peter Raymond of the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies reports that rivers and streams in the United States are releasing an estimated 100 million metric tons of carbon each year. This would be an amount equal to the carbon emissions from vehicles burning 40 billion gallons of gasoline. The estimate is credible, in that it is based on data from the U.S. Geological Survey of water chemistry in 4000 streams and rivers, as well as data from the EPA and other sources. “How can this be? The answer is that the water flowing into rivers flushes carbon from the soil and plants that decompose, giving off carbon dioxide. What is to be made of this new information?

Carbon dioxide in large amounts is nothing new for the planet. Carbon dioxide is necessary for the growth of vegetation, not a disputed fact. We all exhale this gas with every breath. It has been known for some time that for years after lakes are created they give off carbon dioxide in large amounts because of the vegetation that decomposes when the water covers over grass, plant life and trees. Is this new data cause for alarm, indicating that the production of carbon dioxide is even greater than feared by those who subscribe to man-made global warming theories? Or is it confirmation that the earth has always produced high amount of this gas without disastrous effects? Why did not the extraordinary amount of vegetation of the globe kill off animal life back in the prehistoric times?
