Growers say African mahogany (Khaya senegalensis) has plenty going for it. It’s a fast grower, it doesn’t need much irrigation and it can survive bushfires. And plantation growth is promising – African mahogany on the better sites has shown average heights of 7 m at 42 months and average diameters of 10.15 cm. As well, termite tolerance and survival are high. The species has proven that in a plantation setting it can produce a high quality attractive timber

MORE than 30 scientists, growers and investors gathering in Darwin this week for a landmark forum on African mahogany plantations will demonstrate how the dark red ultra-high value timber is a high-return solution to the diminishing supply of Australian hardwoods for the specialist wood trade. “The forum will be a ‘defining moment’ in northern Australia’s forest industry,” says Geoff Dickinson, the leader of Queensland’s African mahogany research program. The forum and field tours will show how the Northern Territory and Queensland governments and private investors are driving the industry which has seen mahogany plantations increase
