editor’s NOTE
If you could travel back in time three centuries, you’d encounter the last of Louis XIV’s wars for domination of the Europe, Benjamin Franklin publishing Poor Richard’s Almanack, and James Watt inventing the steam engine. This was a world during the Renaissance Age (14th to the 17th century) and a bridge between a period of European exploration and the age of machines. But what if we could look 300 years into the future? What would Earth look like in 2300? For starters, what will the weather be like? Will artificial intelligence have taken over the world? Will we have established the first human settlement on Mars? Depending on whom you ask, the year 2300 will either be very futuristic or an inferno of conflicts. Some experts suggest that by the 2100s, we will have begun using automation as a new means of outsourcing. We will begin harnessing atmospheric water to give the planet one more chance against a global water crisis. We will finally become a species harnessing the entire sum of Earth’s energy. Either way, the future looks quite impressive indeed. What other technologies will shape the future? Will humans travel in starships? Will we reside in both lunar and Mars colonies? Where will we go from here?

Darknet Drug Markets Grow Bigger and B o l d e r S i n c e A l p h a B ay Market Bust The law enforcement may have shut down AlphaBay Market, but the darknet drug markets are alive and even booming in the very same niche. In ten days following the AlphaBay bust, the dark web is teeming with dozens of new markets and thousands of new dealers serving growingly anxious AlphaBay refugees. Some of these online entities promise to offer greater product reliability and less risk of doxxing than AlphaBay. According to Dark Web researcher and Carnegie Mellon computer science professor Nicolas Christin, the site was estimated to have average sales of between $600,000 and $800,000 a day on contraband items. AlphaBay refugees will need to migrate to other black markets for drugs because they prefer a constant supply of their drugs using non-violent ways. Some of them are now turning to invitation only centralized markets selling high-quality cannabis, cocaine, or LSD. Including drugs, a host of contraband items and service are for sale, including money laundering, secret foreign bank accounts, hacking techniques, forged techniques, spam tools, and weapons. Fraudulent listings frequently appear on some of these lesser used underground, online networks. Furthermore, desperate users on the Technowize Magazine | august 2017

darknet have now taken to selling their accounts on sites like Hansa Market for a sum as small as 0.03 Bitcoins. The AlphaBay bust has also led to a crisis of confidence. Vendors and buyers have realized that despite the anonymity-providing infrastructure, one tiny operational mistake can turn out to be costly. Moreover, the number of people posting about getting scammed has shown that not all anonymous marketplaces are without risk either. Police forces worldwide must now add Tor-hidden sites, Pyramid Market, Hansa Market, and Dream Market. Invite or referral only markets like T*chka Free Market, The Trade Route, House of Lions, Zion Market and Wall Street Market exist too.

Hacker Steals $7.4 Million in Ethereum during CoinDash ICO CoinDash, a blockchain startup focusing on cryptocurrency social trading and portfolio management platforms, was scheduled to begin its ICO on July 17, 2017. The very same morning, it sent out an urgent warning to investors regarding alleged hacking of its cyber security. The e-trade for blockchain was hacked on Monday and $7.4 million was stolen from investors trying to participate in CoinDash ICO. CoinDash ICO went terribly wrong The unknown hacker stole $7.4 million worth of Ethereum in just under three minutes. At the time of the CoinDash ICO, the e-trade for blockchain posted a string of characters which represented its wallet address for investors. Apparently, the hacker tricked users by replacing the official Ethereum address to a fraudulent Ethereum address on the compromised website. Early participants then sent ETH to the fraudulent Ethereum address rather than the CoinDash’s official address. CoinDash has now left a warning on its token funding page advising investors to stop sending funds. Its funding page reads: “This is an emergency message delivered to you in order to stop you from sending your money to an unauthorized ETH address. It seems like our Token Sale page was tampered and the sending address Technowize Magazine | august 2017

was changed. Please stop from sending your funds to any of the addresses until we say otherwise. We are currently examining the situation and will shortly send further instructions. CoinDash ICO was scheduled to last 28 days or until it reached a $12 million limit. The platform said it raised $6.4 million from keen investors. A rapid surge in prices of coins of Ethereum, around $300 from $8 at the start of the year. This surge had caught the fancy of many investors. According to Coinmarketcap.com, Ether (ETH) traded at $174.88 on Monday. One Reddit user had informed CoinDash about their slack three days before the ICO. It looks like CoinDash chose to take it lightly or not acknowledge it at all. Meanwhile, skeptical investors now believe that the people behind the project are scammers. This is probably because CoinDash didn’t actually whitelist their solidity code before the ICO. Investors have every reason to draw suspicion on CoinDash and its founders. Alon Muroch, the CEO and co-founder of CoinDash, was a lead developer for an old company Getgems which has an ICO and scammed $1 million from initial investors.

Disney looking for technical experts As a kid, we were never scared of mice as Walt Disney made sure that they were put forward in the friendliest way possible. What began with a cute love story between two mice went on to become a pioneer in the world of animated entertainment. The Walt Disney Co. has earned a name for itself as one of the world’s best houses for feature as well as animated films. This company hosts an annual incubator program every year, as a part of which it promotes new talent. The Disney Accelerator Program provides funding and other such support to the selected candidates. Over the years, Disney has believed that through this initiative, it can pick out talent and they can join their team. This year as well Disney has similar plans and has picked out an interesting assortment of startups and experts that will join the company. Disney has selected eleven companies which will be eligible for the financial grant and any other help provided by the Mickey Mouse originator. Disney Accelerator has picked out companies creating online learning, artificial intelligence, spanning video games, eSports, robotics, location-based virtual reality, messaging commerce, as well as realtime entertainment. In all these eleven companies, Disney is making equity investments of an undisclosed amount. All such grants are solely in order to promote better technological development by the companies. The highlight about this annual event by Disney is that anyone can invest money, but getting into the depth of technical knowhow is what a true expert would do. This is because providing funds is not Technowize Magazine | august 2017

as important as making them more sound in the tech world. For this, experts in the field provide guidance to the companies participating in the event. The Disney Accelerator is a win-win situation for both the parties involved as Disney gets the latest and best talent whereas the companies get a platform and professional guidance. This initiative tends to focus on defining the future of media with the help of these companies along with improving the entertainment industry as well.

Tech giants come together as mosquito repellents Google and Microsoft are two names which have been ruling the Silicon Valley for years at an end. Google dominates on the internet front whereas Microsoft in terms of software which enables smooth functioning of all our computers and laptops. When these two tech giants get together, one would expect that the collaboration would result in the innovation of flagship technology. Instead both the companies are working on a piece of technology for the betterment and protection of human health. Technology is being developed to deal with the age-old problem of diseases caused by mosquitoes. This is due to the growing number of diseases and infections which are spreading among humans through the medium of mosquito bites. And now tech giants like Google and Microsoft are putting their intelligent minds to work to find a solution to these mosquitoes. Both these American tech companies recently signed a pact to collectively fight Zika and other such similar mosquito-borne diseases all over the world. The battle against these mosquitoes will be fought with the help of robotics and automation. Automation and robotics will be tested to find ways to fight against mosquitoes causing any such deadly diseases. Zika is one such disease which can result in long-term disorders that last for life. This is because the Aedes aegypti mosquito which transmits the Zika virus, it results in birth defects. This means that a simple mosquito bite can ruin the entire life of a human right from the time of hisbirth. This itself signifies that a small being like a mosquito can literally ruin someone’s life. Microsoft is trapping such Aedes aegypti mosquitoes to isolate and capture them in Texas. Entomologists will carry out studies on these mosquitoes to give the researchers a head start to predict outbreaks and find a way to deal with them.Researchers have assumed that it might take years to find a permanent solution to these mosquitoes but till then, scientists are looking Technowize Magazine | august 2017

for a way to at least control them. Google and Microsoft believe that now it is time to move on from the traditional ways like pest control and induce technology to face the problem.

E-sports replacing playgrounds A majority of us have memories of our childhood evenings when we would come back home to our mothers crying with a bruised knee due to playing outdoors. As we grew up a little, we would come home and boast about the goals scored in the interschool football match. We made a lot of friends on the playground sweating it out together. But then technology took over our lives and brought an intriguing way to enjoy your favourite sport. Anything novel has its own appeal and same was the case with video games as well. What began as a popular pastime has now become a substitute for outdoor activities. The tiny gaming console with a dot matrix finish screen clarity is now a full fledge gaming system which can cost you thousands of dollars. As technology gets better to improve our gaming experience, the importance of outdoor activity is gradually diminishing. This is because of various factors. The major one is that people enjoy a better gaming experience in the confines of their home with the kind of comfort that suits them. At any time of the day or night, one can indulge in video gaming. Nor do you need to depend on another individual’s company for your own enjoyment. Technology may be a boon but it definitely has its drawbacks, especially in the case of video gaming. Instead of soaking in some Vitamin D and giving your body a cardio, we prefer being a couch potato with a gaming console in our hands. This has an adverse effect on our health in the long run. Along with this, avid gamers are gradually becoming less social as all they prefer interacting with is their gaming system. Psychiatrists have termed compulsive video gaming as a modern-day psychological disorder. This in itself is enough to show how much this addiction is getting out of hand. With the advent of VR in the video gaming world, things seem to be getting out of hand. It is an alarm that this addiction must be taken as seriously as an addiction of any intoxicated substance. Technology has definitely made our lives better but it is in our hands to use it for the right purpose. Technowize Magazine | august 2017

Now the internet giant has decided to try its hand in social media as well which resulted in the launch of Amazon Spark. On viewing this social media app for the first time, it comes across as a combination of Instagram and Pinterest as it is mainly picture-based. The layout of this app holds a lot of resemblance to the home feed of Instagram. This app was publicly launched on 19th July, 2017. Microsoft Path Guide: GPS navigation is a godsend when it comes to tracking down a certain location or finding one’s way out in an unknown city. But this system has its drawbacks. It does not function in an enclosed space which is a little inconvenient as there are a number of huge buildings where it is difficult to find a particular spot. This is where Microsoft Path Guide comes in handy. Microsoft Path Guide is a research-based application which provides plug-andTechnowize Magazine | august 2017

play indoor navigation services at a considerably low cost. The only outside source the navigation app depends on is the “leader. This leader is another user who has already been in the desired location. Due to this, he can guide the other user as well. With the help of the leader, the user need not rely on faulty GPS services or a slow data connection to guide him to the location. This is because walls usually block the GPS signals due to which it only works outdoors. This is just a glimpse of the wide variety of apps that are a touch away for us which strive to make life easier for us. If used for the right purpose and developed keeping the same idea in mind, smartphone apps have the range of making a number of functions possible. These apps are the future of inexpensive technology under our fingertips.

Amazon Fresh: The Blue Apron knock-off is live and kicking!
In the fall of 2016, Amazon.com, Inc. inked an interesting partnership with Tyson and launched Tyson Tastemakers “a line of chef inspired meal kits.” Come 2017 and Amazon is entering the ring for a food fight. This July, retail giant Amazon forged a partnership with Martha Stewart, where Marley Spoon-prepared meal kits will be made available to Amazon Fresh’s customers in New York, San Francisco, Philadelphia and Dallas. The tagline of Amazon’s new kit is quite similar to Blue Apron’s business model: “We do the prep. You be the chef.” As the news of Amazon Fresh meal kits broke, Blue Apron’s went into a tailspin at an all-time low of $6.45 within the trading day – down 35 percent from its $10 IPO price. The growing trend of startups selling meal kits went unnoticed until recently when Amazon launched its own meal-kit competitor. Companies like Blue Apron, Chef’d, Hello Fresh and Planet have been in this business for long, offering customers a box of ingredients along with easy to follow cooking directions. The beauty of this business is that every meal kit comes with ingredients perfectly measures to each recipe. It is quite Technowize Magazine | august 2017

labor intensive and is mostly done by hand. The meal-kits delivery market in the U.S. is big and is growing at an unparalleled rate. It made approximately $1.5 billion in sales in 2016 and is expected to grow to $5 billion over the next five years, according to a recent report by market research publisher Packaged Facts entitled Meal Kit Delivery Services in the U.S. Let’s not completely forget that the meal kit industry has attracted a sizeable fanbase of Millennials and Generation Z who are a

perfect audience for this kind of offering. Analysts believe, meal kits have the potential to be disruptive. The market for pre-prepared food is too small right now, and is estimated to have reached only 5 percent of U.S. households. We are now spending less time in the kitchen than ever. According to a recent Harris Poll, less than a third of all age groups from Millennials to octogenarian and older cook every day, and only 44 percent cook a few times per week. The meal kits industry is teaching people the value of food, nutrition

and cooking in a world where we only see more marketing done for pre-made junk food. Now, there’s the issue of cost. Each meal from a meal-kit delivery service costs around $10 to $16. The meal kits on Amazon Fresh are priced between $8 to $14 per serving. It’s only affordable for families with a certain amount of disposable income. If meal kits are intended to replace meals, shouldn’t they be a little cheaper? Besides, people can always order a meal from a restaurant or a deli and pay much less. The only sticking point right now is convenience. Meal kits come with pre-portioned ingredients and display step by step instructions. That goes without saying that some of the recipes require more than sixty minutes of preparation and clean up. Let’s not deny that these meal kit companies are based on an economical model that is far from sustainable. Then there’s the issue of sustainability – Millennials who are concerned with environmental sustainability might not agree with the kind of packaging used and its impact on the environment. Besides, when you pre-order what you’re going to eat tomorrow or in the future, it removes some level of excitement and fun at meal time. Many of these meal kit companies offer services which require a subscription, or multi-meal purchases, which is another big downside. Very offer discounts such as “get 2 meals free” or “get 50% off your first order” when you sign up – and it makes one wonder how long will it take before these service earn some real profit. The meal kit industry is poised for unparalleled growth. Consumers report that pre-portioned meals are helping them eat healthier, others feel the step-by-step instructions is a good

way to learn cooking, and others simply love sharing the cooking experience with their loves ones. According to a research conducted by BSR on food waste by Blue Apron, it was found that the facility threw 5.5% of food, while grocery stores threw out 10.5% of food. The study, however, did not include the shipping and packaging waste footprint. There is strong evidence that points out that the meal kit

industry is gaining momentum. Analysts at The Food Institute estimate the market could tap $3 billion in 2018, and an even bigger number by the time we reach 2020. Today, more Americans care about nutrition from the food they eat than ever before. Getting the Millennial generation to cook is going to be a challenge, nonetheless it may be worth the effort. We cannot expect schools to reinstate cooking education as a part of the syllabus, it might still be easier to instill the value of food and cooking to ensure people know the basics, to say the least. It may be some time before we see meal kits available across all of the U.S. states, but the competition is already feeling the heat. Before Amazon Fresh was Blue Apron, one of the largest meal kit provider in the U.S., followed by HelloFresh. The question is, how can Amazon Fresh stand out from a company like Blue Apron or others – Plated, Marley Spoon, Peach Dish, Green Chef, Sun Basket, Gooble, HelloFresh, Chef’d, and even traditional grocers. For all we can say right now, Amazon isn’t too concerned about making a profit on meal kits – and that’s one big issue many competitors are dealing with right now. Right now, Amazon’s short-term goal is to take a loss on meal-kits to draw more Prime members. For a $5 billion profit before 2020, it’s worth it, isn’t it?

A Peek into the Year
2300
At the beginning of the year, I decided to give myself a book challenge by working through twenty books which have won the Hugo Award for Best Novel. Seeing Isaac Asimov’s Foundation, I immediately knew which book I had to start with. I devoured the book rather quickly, and went ahead and read the trilogy. The classic and quintessential science fiction goes like this - fifty thousand years in the future, mankind now lives under a Galactic Empire that is on the verge of collapse. A scientist named Hari Seldon has determined that the Galactic Empire’s Technowize Magazine | august 2017

fall will result into a replay of Earth’s Dark Ages on a galactic scale. To save humanity, Seldon is tasked to create two Foundations that preserve the accumulated knowledge of the physical sciences and thereby shorten the 300,000 years of Dark Age that followed the Empire’s collapse to a 1,000year interregnum. This is Isaac Asimov sketching a little saga, and I must say the series is an unqualified triumph. And with that, begs the question – what does our future look like?
The Year 2300 The entire Solar System is now transformed by an ever-expanding orb of influence by artificial intelligence. Every aspect of world affairs on Earth is now controlled by an alliance of super-intelligent beings. Global issues such as climate change and never-ending wars can now be resolved on timescales measured in days, hours and even minutes or less. War, conflict, poverty and deadly illnesses are now history. Knowledge is free to everyone – thus, fostering a culture of trust and cooperation between men. Meanwhile, technology has made traditional forms of Technowize Magazine | august 2017

employment obsolete – leaving citizens of the world to pursue art, music, travel and other leisurely interests, without needing to work. Scientists and researchers will send a wide variety of probes to neighboring star systems. The fastest probes will achieve a meagre of speed of light, requiring only a few years of travel time. Meanwhile, Voyager missions will take as many as thousands of years to reach the stars. After journeying for billions of miles, the probes will successfully reach their destination. They’ll return a trove of data and information on planets and stars, providing a new perspective of humanity and its place in the universe. Plastics, tin cans and waste products will have decomposed now. This will cause significant damage to the environment and Earth’s soil – including injuring millions of fish, birds and other animals. The planet will have a newfound Technowize Magazine | august 2017

sense of cleanliness and order. The air on the planet would smell fresh and pure, as if they were in countryside. Roads would be made of self-cleaning, self-healing materials. Building surfaces, windows and roofs would be resistant to dirt, bacteria, as well as vandalism. Everything will look immaculate at all times. Cities would feature lush, greeneries, and spectacular forms of sculptures. Signs, Lamp posts, and other visual clutter will have disappeared. Electricity will be passed, wirelessly, from one building to another. Room temperature superconductors will be implanted into the ground. All vehicles on the planet, including flying cars will drift silently. People would live in quiet areas, like in earlier times. A lot of places will have robots tending to manual human tasks and might at some point outnumber humans. This might partly help us reduce the world’s population. A lot of people will spend a majority of their time in virtual environments. Virtual reality will serve as man’s best friend, offering knowledge, communication and interaction. using virtual reality to attend the functions. Crime will be almost non-existent, meanwhile surveillance will be everywhere recording every footstep in detail. If ever a crime happens, police will be summoned instantly, with robotic police officers appearing out of nowhere.
THE RISE OF TRANSHUMANS The advancements in nanotechnology has upgraded citizens of the world to transhumans who can perform Godlike feats. The upgraded individual could broadcast electromagnetic pulse ways to disable vehicles, devices and other objects. Cameras are distributed throughout the body as an all-rounder 360° sensor – making it impossible for an assailant to attack them. Thanks to the various biotechnology upgrades, they would never require sleep. They could even survive off the energy of their surrounding environment, which would be photosynthesized into the skin. A lot of citizens of the world will have abandoned their dwelling and taken to a nomadic lifestyle. Technowize Magazine | august 2017

THE VOYAGER By 2310, the Voyager will have reached the inner part of the Oort Cloud to interact with our surrounding Interstellar medium. This would mark the end of Sun’s gravitational dominance, beyond which lies the Alpha Centauri. The Mars will have transformed into a lush paradise. Mankind’s collaboration on a planetwide scale will create new industries and much more advanced technologies. Meanwhile, humans will begin converting carbon dioxide into oxygen. Nanobots in the so-called heat factories will accelerate the process, thus helping humans to regulate the composition of the atmosphere. Frozen lakes and ponds on Mars will begin to form regions. This will be followed by the growing of mosses and lichen that will be genetically adapted to withstand the harsh environment. Seas and oceans will begin to appear in the following century, along with the lush of flora and certain insects. The planet will be declared safe for humans to walk on the surface, unaided. Humanity will have finally created a second home.

Most Exciting Hardware Startups in London Technology is all about innovation. In order to create a technological innovation, it is essential to come up with a new idea with adequate scientific reasoning to back it up. However brilliant your idea might be, it will be useless if it can’t be implemented well with basic scientific understanding. On the other hand, even if an individual has great scientific skill, he cannot put it to use as long as he doesn’t have a good idea to support it. A combination of these two factors with proper implementation by a team of experts in the field results in a productive outcome. These hardware startups in the city of London have excelled in putting together all these skills and redefining innovation in terms of technology.

Kano Even though computers seem to be a device mainly used for professional purposes these days, we must not forget its relevance as it was the first automated machinery which made intellectual tasks easy for
the human. This machinery took a compact look with the advent of the laptop. Even when a smallest error occurs in the computer, we got to call the expert to fix it. But now you can not only fix but even build your own computer. Kano is a UK-based startup which prepares special computer kits

that can be assembled together right from the scratch without the need of any expertise. Founded in the latter half of 2013, this startup has already received the award of the fastest growing one by the year of 2016. You can not only create but also code your computers yourself. The assembling resembles that of Lego and has been proven to be child-friendly as well.
Cubetto Here is another startup which produces hardware related to coding. But it has a certain twist to it. This coding knowledge is specifically targeted on the kids of today, that too the young toddlers. With the involvement of technology increasing in our lives, even kids these days are constantly interacting with various devices for their entertainment purposes. But why not make this interaction fruitful? Parents have a constant complaint of their children getting glued to tablets of gaming consoles. The parents of these children want them to understand basic science without the need of interacting with a screen. Keeping this in
mind, Matteo Loglio along with a partner founded Cubetto in 2013. The sole purpose of this startup is to produce devices that can help children develop an understanding about technology, science, maths, and engineering. The startup has designed cuboid robot made of wood. This tiny robot has combined shapes to represent the strings of code. By playing with such a device, children will get a deeper understanding of programming.
Pi-top Talking about hardware, it is important not to miss out on of those creations that back up a number of major devices that involve complex functions. The essential unit for this is the coding software. This is because this kind of software serves as the raw material which results in the commands given to different parts of the complex machine which is usually a computer. This computer installs coding software depending on the needs of the user. What if you need a microprocessor which is efficient enough and yet not that expensive? This London-based

startup started off as a student project in 2014 but soon became a crowdfunding campaign to sell laptop housing kits. Such a laptop housing kit is designed keeping in mind the demand for a low cost microprocessor. The startup has already gained the value of $6.37 million in the market. This startup produces software according to the needs of the consumer and a body to complement it.
Elvie Fitness has become an issue to worry about as people are becoming conscious about their health due to the increasing spread of diseases. Talking about various ways to make sure one is fit, people usually concentrate on the external appearance of the body. But we often miss out on giving importance to the internal system of the body. A startup of London has developed fitness tracker which solely concentrates on the well-being of women’s health. The main purpose behind performing Kegel exercises is
to ensure the maintenance of the pelvic muscles of a woman. But how can one know if her pelvic muscles are getting the exercise it needs or not? This is why Elvie has created a Kegel tracker to keep a check on the same which connects wirelessly to an app. Problems like urinary incontinence take place when the pelvic floor muscles are too tight, weakened, or stretched. The health of these muscles matter as they assist with bladder control, hold the core and abs, and enables sexual satisfaction. This tracker is made of silicone which has to be inserted in the woman’s vagina and shows its results on the app. The startup raised $6 million in its latest funding.

roads. There is a London-based startup which aims to look after the safety of the cyclist on the roads, be it day or night. Blaze focuses on creating products for cyclists based in urban areas which are a perfect amalgamation of technology along with design. The reason behind such efforts of the startup is that cycling is a great way to ensure good health of a person along with a greener tomorrow. This is why the company has designed all kinds of products which will make cycling fancier, safer, and more fun.

Fitness Trackers
Fitness trackers are amongst the most commonly used wearable devices. Advanced versions of these trackers are used to monitor heart rate, REM sleep, brain activity and other fitness-related metrics.
Head-mounted Displays
Head-mounted displays abbreviated HMD are devices that reflect projected images straight to your eyes. Devices like Microsoft HoloLens and Oculus Rift are head worn devices that take you to a virtual world.
Implantables
As the name suggests, these are devices that can be inserted in various forms like pacemakers, tattoos, or defibrillators. Currently, implants the size of a cardboard match stick are used for the purpose of birth control.
Smart Watches
These are the most commonly used wearable devices. Tech giants like Apple and Samsung have already launched their smartwatches which are now being used to make calls and send emails to monitor pollution in the air.
Smart jewelry
The idea of smart jewelry is still nascent. Many well-known jewelry designers have collaborated with tech companies to create smart jewelry that allows users to make calls or text, and send emails when they are unable to access their smartphone. Technowize Magazine | august 2017

The Age of Uncensored Social Media Whoever controls social media, controls the world. In the 21st century cultural landscape, social-media-follower counts far exceed tabloid’s paid circulation. Official announcements or statements are sent to PR companies and major media outlets anymore, they’re directly published by uploading a screenshot to Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. For better or worse, whoever seems to have figured it out has the power to change the world. The Arab Spring is one of the best-known examples of how we can use social media to do some good to the world. Take a look at social justice warriors: photos and videos shared on social media has the potential to be used as evidence of human rights violations and wartime atrocities. Social

media has the power to bring together like-minded people who’re fighting an enormous challenge, such as war in the Middle East or Climate Change. Today, social media has become an important platform for providing an ink and a paper to people who want to participate equally as influential leaders to bring good change to the planet. It has also changed the way we connect to local challenges as well as the way we look at enormous narratives that will affect us as a global community. Back in 2010, a tech nonprofit called Majal launched CrowdVoice. org, a platform that utilizes crowdsourcing and crowd-verification to archive and preserve content create by social movements. The project has since grown, now including unique features such as timelines and infographics. Media outlets like Al Jazeera, The Guardian, and UN News Center have showcased evidence of abuse gathered by CrowdVoice to show a wide range of issues, from the abuse of migrant workers in Saudi Arabia to the conflict in war zones like Syria. The platform has now been censored in Yemen and Bahrain after activists in both the countries began collecting evidence of abuses inflicted by these governments. Media from protests and conflicts is shared across the web prove social media platforms across the world are committed to hosting citizen-generated media with special attention to vigilance and integrity, thereby archiving it in a way that it is easily accessible. We are slowly becoming a global community via social media that safeguards and supports those who take the risk by sharing evidence and allowing anonymity. As we bring more innovation, we’re move towards an era where this evidence will be used to ensure it is used to bring awareness, action and justice. In the western world, the role of social media in criminal justice is growing by leaps and bounds. An increasing number of women are using Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and other platforms for Technowize Magazine | august 2017

justice they cannot find in a court of law. In the past, we’ve covered allegations of sexual abuse against Tor developer Jacob Applebaum, poet Thomas Ellis, porn actor James Deen – exacting public punishment. Meanwhile, accusers are deemed the so called “digital vigilantes.” If nothing else, we’re also using social media to usher an era of social equality movement. Take, for instance, the #FreeTheNipple campaign that encourages toplessness, which at one point led to an Icelandic MP Björt Ólafsdottir getting her breasts out on social media for everyone to see. The movement first began in the U.S. as a retaliation against censorship of the female nipple on the social media. While we can post pictures on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and other social media of us topless, what usually follows is a torrent of abuse. Last year, a student had to take a picture down on Facebook which showcased her and her boyfriend topless. The threats coming her way made her question: Why was she being sexualized? Why was his chest neutral? The campaign gained traction when Miley

Cyrus and various other high-profile women got involved including Cara Delevingne and Rihanna. In addition, television personality such as Chealsea Handler showed their support to the movement by putting various pictures of herself on Instagram. The general rule with social media sites is that you can show your breast in the photo but the actual nipple has to be blurred out. Official Instagram policy about “offensive content” is thus: “If you wouldn’t show the photo or video you are thinking about uploading to a child, or your boss, or your parents, you probably shouldn’t share it on Instagram. Accounts found sharing nudity or mature content will be disabled and your access to Instagram may be discontinued.” The biggest difference between protests from 100 years ago is that there are more social movements, demonstrations and protests today. Thanks to social media, the way we organize movements has greatly changed. People are realizing they’re not as great as Mahatma Gandhi or Martin Luther King, but they themselves are the change that they’d been looking for. It is important to remember that there is a dark side to such movements. Globally, men and women face increasing backlash and torrents of abuse on social media. This also includes threats of rape as well as death, as internet trolls take it upon themselves to police people involved in movements on the internet. With the rise of such movements on social media, it is important that people are protected from all forms of abuse – online as well as offline. Technowize Magazine | august 2017

Is Artificial Intelligence a threat to humanity in the future?
The future has a lot of different potentials. In movies like Ex Machina and Transcendence, what we really see is anthropomorphic interpretations of AI having human qualities. A lot of things need to be clarified first. To start with, what we see in sci-fi movies is simply fiction. Secondly, AI is simply a software. Why would a software have human qualities and emotions? Take for instance IBM’s Watson, it is a type of AI, but all it does it make surmises and give you answers based on some sort of statistical understanding and machine learning. We’re still at the dawn of the AI-Age. We are yet to define exactly what ‘intelligence’ is for humans. How can we define exactly what ‘artificial intelligence,’ is? When it comes to computer programs, they can be taught to learn for a very specific purpose using Machine Learning. Often, people confuse machine learning with human learning. Now, machine learning is simply training the software to

behave in a certain manner based on a statistical pattern. Everyday objects such as self-driving cars, Watson and even image recognition software, are taught to behave in a certain manner and cannot go beyond those limitations. They don’t really pose a threat to humanity. But, is it possible that in a few hundred years software become sentient? It’s possible, but machine won’t be intelligent enough to pose a threat to humanity. You see, a machine would never have the same emotions that we do – anger, greed, envy, etc. Even if a piece of software is highly intelligent, there’s no reason why it would necessarily be a threat to humanity. If anything, the software would be controlled by us. All technologies have both good and bad aspects that can be used for. Take for instance nuclear, which is the most glaring example of this with nuclear bombs and nuclear power The reason why researchers and scientists consider AI to be potentially dangerous is because intelligence could increase to colossal levels. Moreover, it can modify itself to increase its intelligence, and keep doing it until it reaches the apex. Experts believe we have a reason to worry about AI posing a threat to humanity. First of all, it would be very difficult to AI to learn human values. We cannot exactly assume that a machine will be able to think as clearly as humans do. For instance, even if we program AI to have human values, we’ll need to give it some kind of metric to measure how well it is doing. Secondly, humans and chimps are quite similar in intelligence. However, the small gap that exists allows humans to play a species far superior to chimps. We can shoot them with a tranquilizer and put them in a cage. Can you imagine AI using its own intelligence to play a far superior species? Will AI lead in the intelligence gap between us? Technowize Magazine | august 2017

THE NERDIST ‘AI will pose a threat to humanity,’ is nothing more than sciencefiction. There are quite a many compelling arguments that suggest that despite the potential for horrendous outcomes, artificial intelligence will be the single most important invention mankind will have made. The problem is that there’s no way to know right now. Of course, we will, sooner or later, try to create an uberintelligent AI. To cut down on the possibility of AI playing god, we can create what William Gibson called the “Turing police.” This is good AI playing the cop and catching the bad AI. Science fiction is lousy with tales of AI gone wild. The nefarious Skynet from the ‘Terminator’ films, Ultron from Avengers, came close to defeating humanity. But in the real world, we’re moving in a different direction altogether with artificial intelligence. AI is everywhere, from automated industrial systems to self-driving cars and smart gadgets. It is nothing more than a computer with cognitive functions; it employs machine learning to assess information and solve problems. The best example of AI gone wild in the real life is of Microsoft chatbot Tay. The experimental AI tweeted radical messages such as “Hitler was right,” spouting abusive and hatred filled sentiments until Microsoft had to take it offline. To begin with, Tay was simply parroting offensive statements made by millions of users on Twitter. The chatbot was designed to mimic the language pattern of users on Twitter using
Technowize Magazine | august 2017
084
THE NERDIST

machine learning and adaptive algorithms. Unfortunately, Tay was mixing with the wrong kind of crowd. Instead of engaging with people in a fun filled, casual conversation, it was parroting statements made by trolls who were simply trying to provoke the AI chatbot. Artificial intelligence will pose a different kind of threat to humanity. The damage AI will cause because they lack common sense or interpret our commands too literally will create what a “sorcerer’s apprentice” problem. As a matter of fact, it happens all the time. For instance, when someone is misdiagnosed, or when an innocent citizen is flagged as a terrorist, etc. There’s no way we can be certain that we will be able to minimize such errors. Why are we worried that someday computers will take over the world? The biggest problem we’ve been facing is that computers are too stupid for their own good and they have in fact, taken over the world. Artificial intelligence is nothing more than just another advanced technology. It is a tool than can be used efficiently or poorly, by our commands. Let’s not forget that it is the human consciousness who creates and uses the AI to make certain aspects of life better.
