Expanding Business. Expanding minds. by Rachel Goldberg

Ed Nikles is the leading builder of custom homes in Pike County, Pa. Nikles founded the company in 1984 after working in construction for 21 years. Since then, it has grown to include modular homes, design and realty services. They recently built a new 5,000 sq. ft. office to accommodate their expanding business. Nikles’ dedication to green building has made him a trendsetter in the area. Nikles is a certified LEED green professional, and they built the first gold certified green home in Pike County. In 2008, Nikles launched his line of “Green Country Homes,” custom designed to maximize energy efficiency and minimize environmental impact. The four designs, called the Farmhouse, Brookside, Country Cottage and Country Manor, all follow NAHB green home building guidelines. That includes selecting eco-friendly options throughout design, construction and operation, keeping in mind energy, water consumption, building design and materials, and indoor air quality. The houses are designed to be green, down to the smallest details. While preparing the site, Nikles ensures that the lot is designed to conserve water and vegetation, and take advantage of 4 Construction Leaders Today

natural energy resources. The Green Country Homes use more recycled materials and wood products than conventional homes, reducing waste output in construction. Including carpets made from recycled fibers, recycled glass countertops, and paint with no volatile organic compounds. They also offer bamboo flooring, which functions similar to hardwood but grows faster and affects the environment less when cut. Each house is equipped with insulation material that protects from air leaks, moisture and UV damage, as well as more energy-efficient windows. Even after construction is complete, Nikles’ team makes sure that owners are educated in how to optimize the resources of their new green home. In addition to saving the environment, the green homes can save their owners thousands of dollars in energy bills. Earlier this year, Nikles announced that they are so confident in their homes’ energy savings that they will pay two years of gas and electricity bills, up to $4,000 for any new owner that buys their homes. Nikles has received numerous awards for his projects and his outstanding service over the years. In 2008, the National Association of Home Builders named him the Custom Home Builder of the Year. CLT
