ach year since 2002, on the occasion of its centennial, one of the largest and most comprehensive construction firms in the United States has given out the Henry C. Turner Prize for Innovation in Construction Technology. Named after the founder of 109-year-old Turner Construction, the prize serves as “an enduring and visible mechanism to showcase America’s many innovations in construction technology.” Upon accepting the 2007 prize on behalf of Gehry Partners and Gehry Technologies, famed architect Frank Gehry said, “I’ve gotten a lot of awards from the artsy side of the profession, but this one’s from the meat-and-potatoes side, and that’s pretty special.” Indeed, throughout their many magnanimous years in the industry, Turner Construction has come to represent that ineffable, invaluable, something special. Henry Chandlee Turner began the company with a simple $687 project for a concrete vault for Thrift Bank in New York City. A century and change later, the firm’s annual revenue stands at just under $10 billion, and their projects are some of the most iconic, unique and exhilarating buildings that mark the landscape of six continents. From some of the most recognized buildings in the world, including Yankee Stadium, Hearst Tower and Burj Khalifa, which stands as the world’s largest building as of 2010, to projects such as the post September 11th clean-up efforts, Turner Construction is the embodiment of excellence in building. “As a member of the Turner Construction team, you have the opportunity to experience so much in terms of career paths,” said Turner Construction’s

Pre-Construction Manager in Washington, D.C., Ty Pate. “The firm isn’t nearly as narrow in terms of scope and size as many other firms are. As the company is so incredibly large, there are many more positions internally, which allows everyone to experience those unique positions without being stuck in them or being limited in what they can do or where they can go.” With 46 offices across the United States, ongoing projects in over 20 countries and an average of 1,500 projects each year, Turner Construction maintains the integrity, scale and quality that has allowed them to work in nearly every unique market sector imaginable. Through the sheer amount of resources behind the firm, Turner Construction is able to bring many more uniquely developed individuals to a project than most firms. Pate, for instance, worked previously at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility in Newport News, Va. as an engineer in the fields of acceleration, magnetic and electronic circuits. “Turner Construction is the largest green builder in the nation,” Pate said. “However, that doesn’t mean anything if we don’t understand, practice and communicate those sustainable ideals on an individual level. Personally, I see sustainability as a core value which exhibits a practicality that can and should be integrated wherever possible. With the possibilities made available by our firm’s size and dedication, we can personally bring these ideas to a huge amount of clients on an individual level.” Pate’s work with the renovation of the historic Eastern High School in Washington, D.C. is a prime example of these large scale yet highly personal ideals. One of the four original schools built in the nation’s

capitol founded in 1890, the project edge technology and highly sustainable elements.Turner’s work began with the total demolition of the interior, which still left the historical elements of the building intact, followed by extensive hazardous material abatement. This phase was particularly challenging, as the building was brimming with asbestos, mainly throughout the plaster walls. The abatement process began at the end of the school year, allowing the firm just a few short months for the expedient removal of these hazardous materials. During that same abatement process, Turner Construction created a comprehensive swing space, which provided a quality temporary facility that would serve as a suite of classrooms so that the educational process wouldn’t be lessened or halted due to the construction process. Additionally, new construction elements for the project were quickly undertaken. A new foundation for the school was required, along with an extensive shoring and underpinning process. The newly built elements consisted of two interior three-story atria featuring a new landscape planning design that would foster a warmer and more welcoming environment on the campus. Brand new mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems were integrated into the project, alongside a cutting edge security and IT system, new science labs, health sciences and pharmacy facilities, a community health clinic, a day care center, a special education suite, two elevators, a gymnasium, music and art rooms, a greenhouse and top of the line administration suites. The project was successfully delivered on a 19 month accelerated fast track, and has since achieved LEED Silver certification.

The School Without Walls, another Turner Construction project completed recently, is one of the highest ranking high schools in the Washington, D.C. region. Adjacent to the prestigious George Washington University, the 19th century building needed a firm that could expertly renovate and expand the structure without compromising schedule, budget or quality. “Because we construct so many different building types in so many different places around the world, we are always highly sensitive of the unique context and community that exists around each project,” Pate said. “The School Without Walls was landlocked on three sides and was set on a very tight space in a bustling urban community. The extent of the work consisted of traditional rehabilitation endeavors, including extensive work on the foundations and underpinnings, and new sheeting and shoring for the underground and basement levels. However, the tight spaces, tight schedule and the school’s desire to become LEED Gold certified provided a uniquely specialized set of parameters for the scope of the project. Since its successful completion, The School Without Walls has indeed achieved certification as LEED Gold. “The direction we’re heading is unique in that we’re innovative, strong and talented,” Pate said. “Each one of those individual talents is backed by a highly ethical firm founded on teamwork, integrity and personal commitment backed by a vast amount of resources. Through the downturn, we’ve held onto our core of highly seasoned engineers, superintendents, project managers and executives and invested in our future. In doing so, we have a strong nucleus that allows us to serve the industry in all market segments, for an incredible range of clients and building types.” CLT
