hen you are a four-time Grammy winner who is both a descendant of Hollywood royalty (his parents were both TV heavyweights in the ‘70s and ‘80s) and the father of a rapidly rising star (Zoe Kravitz is his daughter), your legend doesn’t need burnishing with your own celebrity spirit. When you find something as special as Nocheluna Sotol, however, you jump at the chance to become part of it. That’s exactly what Lenny Kravitz did in 2022, partnering with renowned tequila and mezcal producer, Casa Lumbre, to introduce a tremendous new spirit to the world. Sotol isn’t as well known as its spiritual cousins tequila and mezcal. It’s made from the Dasylirion wheeleri plant (also known as “desert spoon”), endemic to the Chihuahan Desert in Mexico. In a recent interview with Robb Report about his involvement with Nocheluna Sotol, Kravitz admitted this particular region of Mexico was initially foreign to him. “I’ve been touring for 32 years, and there’s not a lot of places I haven’t been or seen,” he told the magazine. “And here I was being taken to place I’d never been to and learning about a culture that was new to me.” The process for crafting Nocheluna

Sotol is an intricate partnership with nature, which, as the spirit’s website details, “makes the desert our lead craftsman.” Sotol plants typically take between one and two decades to mature. When they are ripe, the core (called the pina) is removed. The pinas are roasted for three to four days (in special brick ovens), then crushed, fermented for up to ten days, and finally distilled twice. This process is 100% artisanal and yields what the spirit’s creators describe as “a dynamic liquid that can be enjoyed by all spirits lovers in a neat pour or in cocktails alike.” It is a spirit whose flavor truly reflects the desert moonlight conditions that are a large part of the plant’s maturity.
(Nocheluna means “moonlight” in Spanish.) The sotol is available in blanco and reposado. The pale yellow blanco is described as having notes of mint, honey, and citrus, with subtle hints of pepper. American oak barrels provide the home for the reposado for six months, lending it a subtly smoky flavor. It was this latter quality, in addition to the wild, unfamiliar but alluring area the spirit is cultivated in, that really attracted Kravitz to join this endeavor. As he said to Robb Report, “We went to the desert and met the people that are harvesting and making it. [Sotol] has the notes which I love, especially the smoke. Whether it’s food, incense, fragrances, or a spirit, I love the element of smoke. It’s always been attractive to me.” Nocheluna Sotol can be enjoyed in a myriad of ways: be it on the rocks, in cocktails, or neat. It has also been used in cooking, especially in marinades that need a piquant kick. ow that the DreamWorks Water Park is open in American Dream, vacationers are flocking to New Jersey for far more than its renowned beaches and boardwalks. Touted as the largest indoor water park on the entire continent of North America, it is one of the main attractions at the mega-destination that resides in the heart of the New Jersey Meadowlands. Riding this wave of excitement is Dream Bar, located on the second level of Court A, offering stunning panoramic views of Garden Staten sunsets. Here, the lively bar’s lead mixologist, Jorge Mejia, thrives on the up-tempo energy that makes what he does so much fun. “There’s something different every day,” said Mejia. “It’s not repetitive. There are concerts, or maybe a 1,200-person event at the waterpark.” The entertainment complex, which opened in 2019, offers a wide variety of shopping, dining, and attractions, including the Big Snow indoor ski facility and skating rink, Nickelodeon Universe, Legoland, and Angry Birds Mini Golf, among others. The recently debuted Dream Bar is an entity of M.A.D. Management, which Mejia has

worked with for the last three years. He helped open their other establishments, including the Highwood Restaurant in Weehawken that showcases the New York skyline, and House of Que in Hoboken, which also has a location in the American Dream Mall. Nurturing a passion for house music, Mejia draws inspiration for his libations from the thumping beats associated with late-night club culture, a creative liberty he said M.A.D. Management has always supported. “I was always into music,” said Mejia, a Hillside resident. “I need to hear it when I am creating menus.” When crafting his cocktail lineup, Mejia plays with flavors and textures using offbeat ingredients like clarified milk punch and bitters. (Milk punch is a European cocktail concept that blends five elements: spirit, sweetener, citrus, milk, and spices.) “It’s about the drink having balance; that’s what makes it taste awesome,” said the mixologist.

f the essence of summer could be captured in a singular image, it would likely feature a drop-top grand tourer floating down a far-flung coastal highway, sun beaming, hair whipped by the ocean breeze. Bentley is a progenitor of the long-distance cruise (the R Type Continental was a groundbreaking concept when it debuted in 1952, achieving a then-wild feat of cruising comfortably at 100mph before Europe even had a modern road network), and late this spring, the British super-marque commemorated the dawn of top-down weather with the announcement of a string of updates for its flagship convertible: the 2024 Continental family (its fixed-roof brethren are also enjoying facelifts of their own). The luxury maker’s Continental GT first debuted in 2003, with the convertible following two years later, billed as a powerful yet deeply luxurious long-haul rider dedicated to the journey over the destination. Two decades later, the platoon has expanded into multiple flavors of Continental, with six different trims available for the convertible alone. For those seduced by the thunderous growl of Bentley’s famed twin-turbocharged W12 block, Speed and Mulliner variants boast 650 horsepower along with 663 lb.-ft. of torque, rocketing from 0-60 in 3.6 seconds. The smaller V8, which feeds the comfort-centric GTC models, still commands a meaty 542 ponies and four-second 0-60 time.

he Italian phrase “Mangia Bene, Fai Bene” translates to “Eat Good, Do Good,” and it served as the driving sentiment behind the latest community venture from prominent philanthropists Lois and Richard Nicotra, the husband-and-wife power team behind The Nicotra Group. Pienza Brick Oven Pizza Café, located in the couple’s Corporate Commons Three building in the booming Corporate Park of Staten Island mega-complex, is a lively, quick-service restaurant, a place for families to gather over a bubbling Grandma Pie, where office colleagues meet for an energizing midday break and regulars stop in to try the chef ’s daily specials. On the surface, it appears a successful, profit-generating business for the Nicotras, whose experience in the food service industry dates back decades, but each plate that leaves Pienza’s kitchen serves a greater purpose: to benefit the Staten Island community. Every dollar of profit earned is given to local nonprofits and scholarship funds. “Our first social enterprise eatery, the COMMONS café, was built on our long history of food service, starting with our first successful worldwide franchise, Everything Yogurt,” explained Lois Nicotra of the quick service café and grill, which became NYC’s first social enterprise eatery when it opened in 2011. “The COMMONS café combined our love of hospitality and our focus on helping our Staten Island
community. We have gifted more than $1 million in grants to Staten Island nonprofits and college scholarships to our employees’ children and grandchildren. With Pienza, we hope to more than double our giving.” Opened this spring, the restaurant was inspired by one of the Nicotras’ favorite travel destinations, the small hilltop hamlet of Pienza in Italy’s Tuscan region. “It’s a beautiful, traditional, delicious environment that allows us to feel an escape, and we wanted to bring the flavors and that special feeling to our hometown,” added Richard Nicotra. Warm and bright (a wall of floor-to-ceiling windows blankets the space in natural light), the ground-level eatery is filled with sleek wooden dining tables and seating for indoors and out. There is a life-size indoor Olive Tree, which extends across the ceiling and even “breaks through” the front window. It was designed and constructed in California. The mold was made from a real tree in the forest. The menu, inspired by the vibrant flavors of Italy, is yet another testament to the Nicotras’ fervor for supporting local. Many of the ingredients that dress the pizzas, antipasti, and pastas were harvested just nine stories from the open-air Nicotra Grown Organic Rooftop Farm, located atop Corporate Commons Three. “The fresh flavors and atmosphere of Pienza is one that transports you without the need to get a stamp in your passport,” said Richard Nicotra. “The Grandma Pie is already a fan favorite. It incorporates fresh tomatoes, basil, arugula, and more from our rooftop farm, which is just an elevator ride away. fresh basil (that is the size of their hand since it was grown in an organic setting), they often say there is nothing like it. Once you taste a farm fresh tomato or the crisp, peppery arugula, you are spoiled.” Starters span a variety of house-made shareables, including house-blend meatballs topped with ricotta, Italian egg rolls stuffed with broccoli rabe and sausage and served with a pool of garlic aioli, and crispy golden Tuscan fries tossed with garlic, herb, and parmesan. A line-up of heroes featuring chicken cutlets or slowly braised roast beef on freshly baked bread or focaccia sandwiches featuring freshly picked garden veggies. Italian imported De Cecco pastas are served Bolognese, Primavera, Vodka, or Alfredo. The namesake pizza is a mainstay; diners can choose between a cheese, pepperoni, classic white, or Grandma base and customize their pie with a suite of toppings. Referring to the community’s response as “overwhelmingly warm and enthusiastic,” Richard Nicotra said bookings quickly came pouring in, from groups of retirees, car aficionados, class trips, local businesses, and more, who enjoyed a tour of the Nicotras’ Farm before their taste of Pienza. Just like their COMMONS café, 100% of Pienza’s profits are donated to an array of local nonprofits that serve Staten Island and its residents, including scholarship funds, community building organizations, youth groups, faith-based groups, food banks, literacy programs, and more. The Nicotra Group is a longstanding partner of Staten Island University Hospital as well, as both organizations are committed to the betterment of the borough. “We have supported Staten Island University Hospital throughout our career and at one time Richard sat on the board of the hospital,” said Lois Nicotra. “We have partnered on many successful fundraising efforts. Many people say health is wealth but like any good financial return you have to make small investments along the way, and we believe that by investing and supporting Northwell, we are ensuring that our community has access to the healthcare we all need. Northwell has made a commitment to us and our community that they
will continue to bring world-class physicians and healthcare to our community, and in return we feel an obligation to support that vision. We can’t expect the healthcare we need to be there when we need it if we do not plan to invest and support their efforts.” When asked about future plans, Lois and Richard Nicotra playfully called on a quote from their favorite song, “How Do You Keep the Music Playing?” famously performed by Barbra Streisand. “The lines, ‘How do you keep the music playing? How do you make it last? How do you keep the song from fading too fast?’ all speak to our plans for the future, which is to live each day together doing what we love with each other and surrounded by our team and community. We want everyone we interact with to know that we are devoted to the relationships we are building, the community we serve, and the bright, healthy future we know we can all enjoy together when we support each other.” I

For this New York success story, developing people is the key to tackling the many stressors that come from operating a business. “I believe the most appreciable asset of any organization are the people that work for that organization,” he said. While other business owners might speak about “developing people” in generic terms, Carrozza’s insight is far more nuanced. In his businesses, his aim is not to hire people for specific jobs and then try to guide their talent along these narrow paths; rather, it’s about trying to find the talent within each new employee and then figuring out the best position for them to excel. “Developing people in the area of their giftedness is at the core of everything we do,” added Carrozza, who’s also a certified pilot. I was a student-athlete growing up and throughout college, so that kind of forces you to manage your time wisely. WHAT IS YOUR GO-TO FORM OF WELLNESS OR SELF-CARE? I start my day with a workout, whether it’s 45 minutes, 30 minutes, 15 minutes, or an hour. I make sure to use that time for myself. It has to be done in the morning, so that’s usually about 6 a.m. while the kids are still sleeping and I have that free open window. WHO IS YOUR CELEBRITY HEALTH OR FITNESS ICON? I’m a big Peloton fan and one of the instructors, Robin Arzon, is one of the key leaders of Peloton, and she’s also a mom. So, right now, she’s pregnant and about to give birth to her second baby, and there’s nothing like going through that and having someone coach you who’s also going through it themselves.

The Council of Jewish Organizations of Staten Island (COJO) has a simple motto: “Am Echad B’Lev Echad – One Nation with One Heart.” COJO President Mendy Mirocznik has sat at the helm for the past ten years, overseeing that simple mission to serve the people of the community – and serve them well. Upon moving to Staten Island from Brooklyn 25 years ago, Rabbi Mirocznik began volunteering with the organization. Fifteen years later, he moved into the role of president while his friend and mentor, Scott Maurer, became CEO and executive vice president. COJO has historically been one of the largest food pantries on Staten Island, and in Mirocznik’s time as president the organization has expanded its role as an umbrella organization for social services on the island. Mirocznik, a perennial member of the Staten Island Top 100, noted he’s proud of being newly appointed by Mayor Adams to the first-ever Jewish advisory council. Under Mirocznik’s guidance, COJO coordinates hate crime seminars, volunteer events, food drives, and community events. Within his Le Malt Hospitality group live some of the most exciting and successful locales for enjoying high-end food and spirits in the state, namely Le Malt Lounge, Le Malt Royale, Le Malt Imperiale, Wine Chateau, and Meximodo. Wine Chateau is the recipient of the rare 5-Star Rating by Social Spirits, and Le Malt has the kind of European elegance and sophistication that has attracted a constellation of stars, from Beyoncé and Jay-Z to Sofía Vergara and Joe Manganiello. Though all share commonalities like sweeping sea views, buzzy restaurants and cafés, and historic architecture, each town carries its own distinct persona, offering a mood for every type of vacationer (beach lovers should include a stop in Maiori, for instance, as it’s home to one of the only sandy beaches in the area, while solitude-seekers will revel in the tranquility of Sant’Agata). From the neckcraning verticality of the limestone cliffs to the gemstone hue of the Tyrrhenian Sea, plus fields of vineyards, olive groves, and lemony yellow wildflowers, the scenery here feels like a page from a storybook.
KNOW BEFORE YOU GO The Amalfi Coast is set on the southern edge of the Sorrentine Peninsula along the Gulf of Salerno, originating in the town of Nerano and culminating in Vietri Sul Mare. The closest international airport is Capodichino in Naples, about 40 miles north. Though not technically part of the Amalfi Coast, the clifftop town of Sorrento is the most popular starting point, set on the northern edge of the peninsula and accessible via train on the Circumvesuviana rail line. Filled with winding narrow alleyways, 14th century churches, and a lively historical center, Sorrento is worth an overnight stay. From there, the only way to access the Amalfi route is by bus or car, but note that recent restrictions were placed on rental cars to limit the amount of traffic during the peak travel period of July through September. Summers here are hot, with highs hovering in the mid-80s, but cool coastal breezes offer respite from the sun, and many visitors choose to cool off in the sea or their resort villa’s private plunge pool.

t’s been months since HBO’s Emmy-winning drama Succession wrapped, but at one Upper East Side penthouse, a small piece of the show lives on. A five-bedroom, 5,500-square-foot apartment recently listed at $29 million can boast the unique distinction of having served as Kendall Roy’s apartment in the hit show. For potential buyers, this is a property with a Hollywood pedigree. Succession garnered praise for its juicy portrayal of the lifestyles of the rich and famous, chronicling the squabbles of the Roy family as aging patriarch and media mogul Logan Roy’s declining health created a power vacuum in both the family and the business. This is a show about the top of the top, and any apartment chosen for the show was going to have to be truly spectacular to make a convincing backdrop for the drama. Gold trim adds accents without tilting into the gaudy. As in the world of Succession, this is an apartment where luxury is a given. The property at 180 East 88th Street was developed and designed by Joe McMillan’s DDG in 2019, and holds the distinction of being situated at the highest elevation north of 72nd Street on the Upper East Side. (For a penthouse, that distinction is critical in delivering that floating-in-the-clouds feeling.) The building’s aesthetic is described as “pre-war style inspired detailing refreshed to meet modern luxury expectations.” Those expectations? Eight floors of amenities, including a fitness studio, double-height basketball court, soccer pitch, playroom, game room, residents’ lounge, and a catering kitchen, and 24/7 doorman and concierge services, of course. The penthouse itself is defined by its “loggias,” spaces that open on one or more sides to the many terraces and rooftop spaces. As the tallest penthouse around, this is a property very much built to be enjoyed inside and out with the utmost privacy. The outdoor space of the property tallies up at 3,500 square feet across all three levels, nearly doubling the interior space and offering unrivaled flexibility for entertaining, relaxing, and savoring the skyline. The roof terrace, itself a staggering 2,100 square feet, is divided into two substantial areas for maximum versatility. The property is built on the principle that indoor and outdoor are meant to be enjoyed together, whenever possible. The interior spaces are largely open plans that lean into that relaxed-yet-luxe aesthetic. Soaring ceilings abound, and the living room, dining room, and great room feature floor-to-ceiling windows. The property’s Carnegie Hill neighborhood is known for its upscale residences, prominent museums, and, of course, proximity to Central Park. t was approaching spring this year when a seemingly benign exam took a dramatic turn at Staten Island University Hospital. A patient arrived with minor jaw pain, only to have Joshua Segal, DDS, MD, MS, detect an unsettling anomaly. Swiftly collaborating with radiology, a CT scan was ordered, exposing significant erosion in the patient’s lower jaw. Dr. Segal and his team urgently performed a same-day biopsy, ultimately

uncovering a life-threatening, cancerous lesion. “Fortunately, being here at SIUH grants us access to exceptional resources for managing such cases,” said Dr. Segal, a board-certified surgeon and former program director of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residency program at Long Island Jewish Medical Center. Every step of the process, from diagnosis to jaw reconstruction utilizing advanced computerassisted technology, took place within SIUH. “Typically, such procedures can span weeks,” he explained. Dental Medicine to operate with a completely digital workflow. “This allows physicians to better predict results and decrease appointment time,” he explained. “Advancements in imaging give us the ability to perform more accurate procedures that take less time and are often safer for the patient.” What’s more, physicians now have access to an abundance of information prior to surgeries. Computer-assisted technology has revolutionized oral surgery, providing surgeons with extensive pre-planning capabilities for enhanced precision. In the past, addressing fractures in the eye socket or orbital bone required invasive procedures to shape plates or materials. Operating in such a confined and critical space was challenging. “Now, with computer technology, we can create an exact replica of the unaffected eye, producing a meticulously contoured titanium mesh that perfectly fits the patient’s unique
anatomy,” said Dr. Segal. Tapped to lead the department this spring, Dr. Segal took the reins at an exciting period in the program’s 53-year history. Previously helmed by Donald Ratcliffe, DDS, for 17 years, SIUH’s Department of Dental Medicine has expanded into a prominent teaching program, dedicated to training the next generation of dental professionals in addition to providing world-class patient care. For the New York City native, training and education has always been a cornerstone of his practice. “At SIUH, I am deeply committed to establishing our residency program as a sought-after destination in the tri-state area and beyond,” said Dr. Segal, who holds a unique distinction among his peers as one of the few physicians in his field with an MD and DDS from Stony Brook University and a master’s degree in education from Hofstra University. “We strive to be recognized for delivering top-notch education,

He originally intended on following the bioscience research route, but while completing his undergraduate degree at Northwestern University, he was introduced to microsurgery and found his calling. A board examiner for the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Dr. Segal sits on several education committees, including the AO CMF Education Commission and Osteo Science Foundation. He is also an assistant professor at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra Northwell and is the assistant investigator at the Institute of Bioelectronic Medicine at the Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research. In his leadership role, Dr. Segal will continue fostering collaboration between SIUH departments. For example, one of his goals is to team up with the OBGYN Department to support low-resource patients in family planning stages to prevent complications that can occur through dental infection during pregnancy. He’s also referred several oncology patients after a seemingly routine dental exam yielded tumors and other life-critical ailments. At SIUH, oral cancer screenings are a routine part of the department’s comprehensive approach, successfully detecting oral cancer in patients time and time again. “The key is prioritizing the holistic well-being of each patient,” said Dr. Segal, adding that his team conducts thorough evaluations, taking into account medical history and any potential factors that might impact a patient’s dental treatment. “Our care philosophy extends far beyond focusing on oral health – that is how we’ve managed to provide the best care.” I

nyone who thinks they can pigeonhole Elizabeth Banks is in for a surprise: the dynamic, Emmy-nominated actress is never going to let that happen. Not at the rate she’s going, anyway. She’s managed to forge a career that grants her the option to be an actress, a director, a producer, even a game show host. Heck, thanks to her work on What to Expect When You’re Expecting, she’s even got her own page on Discogs.com, although if we’re to be honest, the heavily autotuned version of “The Hormone Song” is probably not going to score her a solo recording contract. But we digress. Born and raised in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, Elizabeth Irene Mitchell changed her last name to Banks when she joined the Screen Actors Guild, owing the fact that Elizabeth Mitchell – probably best known for playing Juliet on Lost – got there first. Banks attended the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco, an education she took so seriously that she passed on a role on the NBC soap opera Santa Barbara because it would’ve forced her to quit school. (Plus, she’d already taken out the loans for it, anyway.) As a result, Banks didn’t make her on-camera debut until 1998, appearing in the indie film Surrender Dorothy. A few TV gigs soon followed, including an episode of Sex and the City (“Politically Erect”), but the film that really put Banks on the map was 2001’s Wet Hot American Summer, where she held her own in a cast of some of the funniest comedians in the business. She also has a decidedly memorable make-out scene with a fellow up-and-comer at the time: Paul Rudd. “We both went into it knowing that we were just going to do the most disgusting kissing that we could imagine,” Banks told EW in 2011. “There was nothing romantic about it at all at that point. It was just, ‘I’m going to eat your face and you do the same and we’ll see what happens.’ It was a lot of licking. I was trying to make as many obnoxiously loud noises with my tongue as possible.” It’s at this point in her career when Banks quickly turned into an in-demand actress, one who was capable of bouncing between comedy and drama without hesitation. She picked up a recurring role throughout Sam Raimi’s trilogy of Spider-Man films as Betty Brant, worked with Guy Ritchie (Swept Away) and Steven Spielberg (Catch Me If You
Can), and picked up her first Screen Actors Guild Awards nomination as part of the cast of the 2003 film Seabiscuit. Fast forward to 2005, and she once again cemented her comedy chops by appearing in Judd Apatow’s The 40-YearOld Virgin, this time alongside Steve Carell. “Here’s my problem: I am a character actor stuck in a leading lady’s body,” Banks told CBS’s Sunday Morning in 2012. “The industry keeps sticking me in the character roles!” Still, the good news about being a character actor is that you’re rarely without work, which is why Banks continued to secure as much work as she could handle, splitting her time between film and TV with impressive results. From 20062009, she had a recurring role on Scrubs as Dr. Kim Briggs, eventually giving birth to Dr. Dorian’s child, after which she picked up a recurring role on 30 Rock from 2010-2012 as Avery Jessup, where she married Jack Donaghy (Alec Baldwin) and had his baby. “I like to play Avery as though she is Jack Donaghy with boobs,” Banks told The A.V. much most things when it comes to the issues, how things are done, and ambition, and take-no-nonsense, and all of it. I just think they really enjoy each other.” It was at the tail end of her stint on 30 Rock that Banks began to shift her career focus to include more work behind the scenes. After dabbling in production on the 2009 Bruce Willis film Surrogates, things really took off when she worked on 2012’s Pitch Perfect as a producer, a gig which led to Banks making her directorial debut on the second installment of the franchise. Having been on set throughout the filming of the first movie, the experience wasn’t nearly as daunting for her as one might think. “I went into it with my eyes really wide open,” Banks told Collider in 2015. “The first day of shooting, I was just so excited to finally be doing it, because you do prep for so long. It was just like, ‘Oh, thank God, we can finally just go to the set and work with the actors and get the raw materials that are gonna make this movie. So I was really happy the first day. I was not ever really scared of this process at all.” That absence of fear behind the camera has continued: she also directed the 2019 reboot of Charlie’s Angels and, perhaps more notably, helmed this year’s most buzzed-about film, Cocaine Bear. Big names are attached to this summertime comedy starring Broadway’s Ben Platt (Dear Evan Hansen) and Molly Gordon (The Bear) as overly dramatic camp counselors. The film, which won the U.S. Dramatic Special Jury Award, is set at a youth theater camp in upstate New York founded by Joan (Amy Sedaris, The Mandalorian). When Joan gets unexpectedly sidelined, her bumbling son (Jimmy Tatro) must step in as all try to salvage opening night. Platt is one of the producers, along with Will Ferrell.
Society’s worst fears about Artificial Intelligence are fleshed out in spectacular fashion in this sci-fi thriller set ten years after robots unleash a nuclear weapon on Los Angeles. John David Washington stars as Joshua, a former special forces agent grieving the disappearance of his wife, who must find and kill the Creator, the elusive architect of advanced AI who has developed a powerful weapon. But when Joshua discovers the Creator “is a kid,” he ends up fighting to save it. Directed by Garth David Edwards.
BUCKY F*CKING DENT AUGUST (UNRATED) David Duchovny, the actor and New York Times bestselling author, wrote the 2017 novel of the same name about fathers, sons, and baseball, particularly the 1978 Yankees/Red Sox pennant race. The poignant black comedy is centered on an aspiring novelist who, when he learns his dad is dying, enlists his son and a group of friends to convince Dad his beloved Red Sox are winning. Duchovny plays the dad, and Logan Marshall-Green (Big Sky) is son Ted.
BARBIE JULY (RATED PG-13) The only question remaining about this much-hyped film that transforms plastic dolls into real people is whether it will live up to its press releases. Actress turned filmmaker Greta Gerwig co-wrote and helms the production, which allegedly caused a worldwide shortage of pink paint, and became the catalyst for a new HGTV special series chronicling the creation of an actual Barbie Dream House. Margot Robbie plays Barbie while Ryan Gosling becomes Ken, fake abs and all. A bevy of stars are aboard for the rollicking ride – John Cena, Helen Mirren, Rhea Perlman, Kate McKinnon, Issa Rae, Dua Lipa, America Ferrera, Simu Liu, and Will Ferrell as the CEO of Mattel.
OPPENHEIMER JULY (RATED R) The sensitive subject matter underpinning this biopic about physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, who had the misfortune to go down in history as “the father of the atomic bomb,” challenged the cast, headed by Irish actor Cillian Murphy (Peaky Blinders) as Oppenheimer. Christopher Nolan directed and co-wrote the screenplay. Marquee co-stars include Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., Emily Blunt as Oppenheimer’s wife, Rami Malek, Florence Pugh, Tony Goldman, Kenneth Branagh, Alden Ehrenreich, Josh Hartnett, and Gary Oldman as President Harry Truman. Shot in IMAX and based on the 2005 Pulitzer Prize-winning book American Prometheus by Kai Bird, who also co-wrote the screenplay.
MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE - DEAD RECKONING PART ONE JULY (UNRATED) Another installment in the franchise promises more extreme car chases, bigger explosions, and deathdefying stunts by the seemingly ageless Tom Cruise as IMF agent Ethan Hunt. And that’s just Part One! The world is coming after Ethan as he and the IMF team hunt another deadly weapon threatening humanity even more severely than those previously vanquished. A June trailer unleashed a harrowing scene between Cruise, a motorcycle, and a scenic cliffside. Captain America’s Hayley Atwell and Pom Klementieff of Guardians of the Galaxy are joined by Esai Morales, Ving Rhames, Cary Elwes, and Simon Pegg. Set to play in IMAX and standard theaters.
BLUE BEETLE AUGUST (RATED PG-13) Cobra Kai heartthrob Xolo Maridueña is Jaime Reyes, who becomes a superhero after he opens a box containing a shining blue scarab which quickly attaches to his face and expands into a full-body suit equipped with a Siri-like voice. Following the origin story format, we see Jaime strive to understand and control his new powers, wreaking havoc and leaving flaming wreckage in his wake, much to the consternation of his worried family. Susan Sarandon is villain Victoria Kord, hellbent on procuring the blue exoskeleton. Comic relief comes from the suit’s inner voice (Becky G) and George Lopez’s Uncle Rudy, who labels Batman “a fascist.” The latest from DC Comics was filmed for IMAX.
