STEADY GROWTH AT RS COMPONENTS, DESPITE THE IMPACT OF COVID-19

Scott Philbrook foresees many opportunities for the business heading into the next quarter and beyond

Despite COVID-19 and its impact on the cost of freight, RS Components has maintained steady growth in taking on new customers while its digital platform has performed strongly.

“I would say it’s been a solid year,” says Scott Philbrook, Acting MD for RS Components. “Why I say that is because we’ve performed well in the current economic climate.”

“It’s really been driven by customer acquisition through our digital platform. But we really feel that there’s more market share to be had,” he tells Industry Update.

RS Components has operations in 32 countries and offers around 600,000 products through the internet, catalogues and at trade counters to more than one million customers, shipping more than 44,000 parcels a day.

Its products – sourced from 2500 leading suppliers – include semiconductors, interconnect, passives and electromechanical, automation and control, electrical, test and measurement, tools and consumables.

Before the recent COVID-19 circumstances, RS Components ANZ took initiatives to focus on the local market in the industrial PPE space. That includes everything from footwear and workwear through to hygiene and janitorial products.

One new relationship is with iconic Australian brand Blundstone, which provides tradies and manufacturing staff with hard working, reliable and durable boots. Already, they have become one of RS Components’ top sellers.

“It’s been one of the big recent partnerships we’ve joined,” says Scott. “By working alongside a trusted Australian brand such as Blundstone, we’re providing a more holistic approach to worker protection and safety by expanding our footwear PPE range.”

“For us in our position it’s really about expansion through different industries we’re targeting,” says Scott. “So it’s a lot around transportation, defence and obviously manufacturing is a big part of that.”

He foresees many opportunities for the business heading into the next quarter and beyond. A key of which is taking a more strategic partnership approach to the large manufacturing organisations.

“Whether it’s a procurement solution or taking a total ‘cost of ownership’ approach to their account, we’re looking at ways we can glean some cost solutions and benefits to their business,” he says.

“It’s about working out where their pain points are and then coming up with solutions to meet their requirements.”

RS Components is continually seeking to expand and diversify. This includes several acquisitions that are yet to come into the Australian and New Zealand markets.

IESA, a UK-based provider of valueadded outsourcing services to industrial customers, was acquired in 2018. This partnership is a full procurement and inventory management system for RS customers.

Another acquisition was in the manufacturing space of Monition in early 2019. It is a global pioneer in the design, development, and application of reliability and condition-monitoring systems.

“Monition is about reliability and condition monitoring,” says Scott, and supports its strategy of building a range of differentiated value-added solutions such as connected factory and IIoT solutions for customers.

“So that’s really starting to position ourselves as more of a technical expertise company and starting to help with solutions for industry 4.0 and predictive maintenance.”

Manufacturing is widely recognised as a key driver of global economic growth. As a result, one of the main objectives of industry 4.0 is to make manufacturing faster and more efficient, with an increased customer focus.

Technology such as robotics and AI are enabling rapid prototyping, individualisation, flexibility, customisation and increased production reliability in manufacturing, improving both products and processes. Advanced manufacturing is therefore not about what manufacturers make, but how.

“Monition is tailored to where we’re going as more of a solutions provider,” says Scott.

He adds: “where we try to differentiate ourselves is the main piece of our omnichannel approach”.

“So really have a mix between our inperson and digital capability and we really look at what the customer needs.”

Through its steady growth and focus on emerging platforms and technologies, Scott hopes RS Components will continue to be at the forefront of the market.
