Few Australian manufacturers can boast selling their wares to the world’s manufacturing powerhouses, but Gold Coast load pin specialist Delphi Measurement counts US and Chinese producers among its international customers.

The company has carved a niche using old-fashioned Australian ingenuity to provide customised load and measurement solutions for a wide range of industries – from boutique food manufacturing to large scale mining operations.

Delphi products can be found throughout south-east Asia, Papua New Guinea, New Zealand and the South Pacific, the Middle East, several African nations and North America.

The company uniquely designs and manufactures its own premium quality components in-house, employing a highly skilled work force that is increasingly difficult to access in Australia.

Co-owner Mike Leonard says the key to Delphi’s success in a sector cruelled by overseas imports is applying its expertise to solving each clients’ unique challenges and its emphatic commitment to quality.

“We don’t just sell components, although we do that too,” Mike says. “We actually partner with our clients to come up with the best solution for their operation and follow through until it’s 100 per cent right.”

While Delphi’s main business is custommaking load pin cells, its staff are also highly qualified in calibration, electronics and specialist software development.

The company is approaching its 40th year in business and remains highly valued by its clients for providing old-school service.

“A lot of our work is fixing problems where businesses have gone with imported equipment that’s let them down,” Mike says.

“We design and manufacture solutions for a wide variety of force monitoring and measurement applications – big or small – and the people who use us invariably come back because they know we’ll do what it takes to solve their issues and our components will last.”

As well as designing and manufacturing specialist load and lifting sensors and components, Delphi offers solutions for conveyor belt tensioning, mining, manufacturing, CNC machining, calibration and repair work, among other services.

“It’s very important for us to keep these bespoke services available in Australia,” Mike says. “Our clients understand that too.

“We need to be there for other Australian manufacturers and keep championing industry in this country.”

Delphi services large and small scale operations including construction and heavy industry, the maritime sector, oil, gas and mining, cranes, lifting and towing businesses, chemical processing and food and beverage manufacturing.

“Anyone can order a part online but once customers use us and see our commitment to providing a quality solution that’s just for them, they always come back,” Mike says.

“We’re very proud of what we do, our quality and our service, and we’re always very happy to fly the flag for Australian manufacturing.”

Transporting a large amount of office documents and crates has always been a challenge – but the X-Cart from MHA Products solves those problems thanks to its unique design.

The X-Cart is a collapsible trolley that can be used in the workplace, schools, home, office, hospitals, courier services, shopping malls, nursing homes and more.

Manual Handling Australia (MHA) general manager Daniel Ovenden says the cart’s unique features make it one of the most versatile on the market.

“There’s no assembly required and folds completely flat and you can put in the boot of a car with the push of a button,” he says. The wheels can be removed and stored underneath for compact transport and storage.

Despite weighing just 8.4kg, the lightweight aluminium trolley can hold a 75kg load, thanks to its sturdy x-shaped design.

“There is a product on the market that’s similar, but this is bigger,” Daniel says, adding that his company tweaked the design to enable it to fit Australian-made stack and nest crates.

The basket easily fits foolscap suspension files which is great for transporting documents throughout the office. The front and rear wheels have a high-performance roller ball bearing, which gives the user an exceptionally smooth operation.

A foot pedal brake allows the X-Cart to be locked in position while loading or unloading and the injection-moulded plastic and aluminium design means that while the X-Cart is lightweight, it is still very robust and has a great carrying capacity.

The X-Cart comes with one collapsible basket which will lock into place on either the top or bottom platform. The top platform can be folded back to allow larger items to be transported.

Extra baskets can be purchased for use on both platforms and up to four baskets can be stacked on the bottom platform.

MHA has the largest range of manual handling and workplace materials handling equipment in Australia. This includes thousands of workplace and storage items suited to every workplace and lifting equipment and trolleys for almost every application.

Its products aim to eliminate or reduce manual handling effort in the workplace, while boosting productivity and ensuring workplace safety.

LAMPO TRAILER MAKES EMERGENCY RESPONSE QUICKER AND EASIER

Ever been in an emergency response situation where you need multiple pieces of equipment collected and transported to site in a hurry?

A burst water main urgent call-out at midnight Monday night requires a mobile pump with a mobile generator and lights.

A two-week project of night-time tunnelling on a busy road requires again, a transportable pump with a generator, lighting tower, and a compressor.

Repairs to damaged storm water pipes on Thursday, delayed until after hours due to high traffic area means a pump, some heavy tools and the power to drive them – perhaps a trailer-mounted generator, and some kind of safe night lighting to carry out the works.

A collapsed footpath on Friday needs a generator and compressor; it might need a pump but will need to be assessed at the site.

Coordinating equipment to each site and vehicle can become problematic, along with the amount of staff required to get all gear to the site.

However, there is a multi-purpose emergency response trailer that could be hooked up to just one vehicle.

The new Lampo Emergency Response Trailer is designed to speed up and simplify the deployment of emergency response equipment for municipalities, emergency services and contractors.

The Lampo is equipped with customisable options covering the four most used requirements:

• LIGHTING TOWER 6m high, guaranteed enough light to operate in safety during the night – powered by the onboard generator

• ELECTRICITY GENERATOR 3x400V and 230V both available, for various electric tools, 3-phase or single-phase – diesel driven with and additional variable frequency drive

• AIR COMPRESSOR for pneumatic tools such as impact wrenches, grinders, cutters, hammers • A rugged and reliable Gorman-

Rupp MOBILE PUMP unit with customisable capability for cleaning and draining, during and after the operation

• An optional HYDRAULIC POWER

PACK to power hydraulic tools required, to avoid the use of electrical tools near wetted areas

The Lampo also comes with a discharge hose reel, suction hoses and a robust mounted toolbox fitted to the trailer. The trailer is an Australian heavyduty built hot-dip galvanized double axle trailer.

The cleverly designed unit can light up a work area while operators set up the self-priming pump or operate numerous electric tools from the power generator. The VFD allows for soft starting electrical equipment, including the pump, and can vary the speeds of these machines to suit the duty at hand. While all this is happening, the compressor can be driving air nibblers, air-operated nail guns, wrenches or tyre inflators.

NEW PLASTIC PRODUCT TO REPLACE MINERALS IN CEMENT

Polyrok is a new sustainable alternative to minerals used in concrete, and is going to form part of the foundation for a carpark installation for Coles in Horsham, Victoria.

The concrete slab carpark will be made partly out of the recycled soft plastics product. The innovation is being led by Victorian recycling RED group and Replas, in partnership with Coles.

The carpark is the first commercial construction project in Australia to make use of Polyrok.

Made from plastic bags and soft plastic packaging recovered from the REDcycle program, Polyrock has the potential to divert 105,000 tonnes of soft plastics from landfill each year, if used in commercial concrete projects across Australia.

Coles state construction manager Victoria Fiona Lloyd said this was the first time the product had been used in a commercial environment.

The project will help repurpose 900,000 pieces of soft plastic, to be used in the carpark at the soon-to-be-competed Coles Horsham redevelopment.

RMIT University is also an active partner throughout the whole development process.

Polyrok reduces the carbon footprint due to the reduced thermal mass it provides.

This tackles the plastic problem, in addition to carbon reduction, while being fit for purpose.

Federal Assistant Minister for Waste Reduction and Environmental Management Trevor Evans welcomed the collaboration to find innovative and practical ways to reuse soft plastics.

“There is huge potential and opportunity for infrastructure projects to help us build a more circular economy,” Mr Evans said.

“This is why the federal government has prioritised the development of new national standards and guidelines to encourage the use of recycled content in roads and other projects.”

Since the partnership began, Coles and its customers have diverted more than 1.3 billion pieces of soft plastic from landfill.

CUSTOMISATION THE STANDARD FOR BOMAC ENGINEERING

We have all had that experience where we find an off-the-shelf product that almost – but not quite – meets our need or solves our problem.

In that situation, what are the options? You can just do the best you can with the standard item or try and tweak or change the item.

You could make something different or find someone who makes something tailored to your needs. That is really expensive as a one-off, right? But not when the standard product itself is able to be tailored.

This is the thought process behind Bomac’s flagship product, Altrac, a lightweight, lowmaintenance, adaptable and safetytested rail system that can be tailored to almost any application.

Altrac is extruded from aluminium extracted and smelted in Australia. Each batch is NATA certified, having undergone chemical and mechanical analysis to ensure the highest quality.

The T slots along the top of the rail allow brackets to be easily attached and adjusted on the spot during installation. The track can also be easily extended with the extension kit.

Altrac can be cut to length and paired with a range of standard bracketry to form jib cranes, gantry cranes, monorails and mobile cranes.

“Bomac’s ethos has always been to look at how one part can be made to accommodate several applications,” according to Director of Engineering, Tate McFarlane.

“This allows us to provide our customers with greater flexibility with the design, without blowing out the production cost.”

Altrac is used by hundreds of organisations around Australia in industries as diverse as manufacturing, tourism, education and construction.

Recently, Bomac was approached by a door manufacturing company, Nexdor Systems, with an aim to increase its production. It had already discussed its needs with two other crane companies. going to take up valuable floor space and potentially limit ongoing growth of the business.

The engineers from Bomac were able to sit down with the customer to understand their specific needs and their specific production layout.

The solution they came up with not only met the current need, but would easily allow for future expansion of the system. It also ended up being more cost-effective than the off-the-shelf products offered by others.

“Bomac was the only company that looked at the problem in a different light, offering us what we needed and not just what they wanted to sell us,” said managing director of Nexdor Systems, Russell Murray.

By taking the time to listen to and understanding the needs of the customer, Bomac is able to offer better value with a truly tailored solution from a high-quality product.

“We really enjoy building a relationship with the customer and get great satisfaction from delivering a solution that absolutely meets, and often exceeds, expectations.”

CAN YOU FIX A BOTTLENECK WITH AUTOMATION?

As food and beverage manufacturers strive to achieve greater efficiency in their manufacturing operations, they often assume that the panacea lies in adopting the automated manufacturing of the ‘factory of the future’, or Industry 4.0. magnify the effect of them, and building automation into a flawed system is more likely to create new bottlenecks than solve existing ones.

Finding bottlenecks

As manufacturing and its associated processes evolve, bottlenecks can appear, or move to a different part of the process. Manufacturers may have designed their business not to have any, but each time they add new technologies, machines, people, recipes, ingredients, capacity or suppliers, a potential issue may be introduced.

The best way to solve this issue is to identify what areas have become bottlenecks by evaluating metrics such as throughput, capacity, and wait time. Then evaluate the consequences of those bottlenecks. What operations are being delayed as a result? Thirdly, manage those bottlenecks. What can be done immediately to solve them? Using automation to resolve bottlenecks

Having many interconnected devices makes it easier to identify faults, and existing bottlenecks can easily be eliminated with the implementation of a good ERP system. If there is a blockage, an ERP system will find it. If there are ways to improve efficiencies, an ERP will reveal them. Every piece of data collected provides even greater insight into the way a factory is operating.

To reduce the pain that comes with eliminating either production, people or supply chain bottlenecks, food and beverage manufacturers need strong ERP project management with careful planning to steer the change management process. For most producers in the food and beverage sector, change does not happen easily, but it can be achieved more efficiently if they have a structured view of their whole organisation. This will help them to easily make changes because they can see the logic of how processes, systems, data and organisational hierarchies are designed.

REDUCE MAINTENANCE COSTS

After all, Industry 4.0 will connect whole systems, from supply chains to factory floors and machines, all the way through to business intelligence and analytics. Through technologies such as digitalisation, automation and data exchange, food and beverage companies can benefit from fully integrated and collaborative systems that respond in real time.

In smart factories, alerts are sent before systems fail so that manufacturers can proactively fix equipment, prevent bottlenecks, automate with precision and much more.

Industry 4.0 will automate a range of common food and beverage manufacturing processes, including identifying and re-ordering missing ingredients instantly, automatically picking ingredients and filling machines in FEFO order, maintaining machinery on an ongoing basis rather than waiting for a breakdown, centralised systems that speak to every connected machine, device, supplier and stockist and real-time data reveals performance minute by minute.

Food and beverage manufacturers across the Asia Pacific region face the challenge of providing a wide range of products that must be safe to consume. With short expiry times, tight timelines, and a need to be cost competitive, even relatively minor bottlenecks can have a significant impact on productivity and profitability and therefore they need to be quickly found and then fixed.

To understand what needs to be fixed, manufacturers need to identify their bottlenecks and manage them. Many bottlenecks have similar root causes, such as staff underperformance, problems with a machine, supply chain issues, poor ingredients planning or poor machine layout on the factory floor.

To find out what is causing any inefficiencies in their system, operations managers need to start by evaluating existing production metrics, because identifying the symptoms will help to find the underlying issue.

Industry 4.0 is revolutionary technology, but will it solve bottlenecks? No. Simply installing the technology required by the future factory will not fix inefficiencies. In fact, if preparation and planning is poor, Industry 4.0 will only

Solving for a specific bottleneck can quickly reveal and fix others and the same data that identifies where the problem is will also give help to identify the cause of future bottlenecks and know what needs to be done to solve them.

NEXT ISSUE

As we head towards the end of 2020, we approach the New Year in the manufacturing sector with renewed optimism.

The is supported by a lift in consumer confidence in November to its highest level in seven years, according to Westpac data, and a significant drop in the number of loan deferrals with the major banks. The Commonwealth Bank of Australia reported a 75 per cent reduction in the number of loans in deferral as at June 30.

Certainly, the federal government’s JobKeeper and JobSeeker programs have played a role in maintaining high confidence levels, but it is the federal government’s $1.5 billion Modern Manufacturing Initiative that has driven industry optimism for 2021.

POWERED TURNTABLE STRETCH WRAPPER. 2 TONNES CAPACITY

It simply doesn't make sense to wrap a pallet of goods with stretch wrap, whilst the operator is pulling on the film to stretch it, and walk backwards at the same time. It invites strains, aches and trip hazards. It's far easier and safer to load the pallet onto the Rapid Wrapper, hold the film dispenser, push the foot switch, and let the powered turntable do the hard work, whilst the operator tensions the film and overlaps it as required. She/ he can also pass the film under the corners of the pallet, for a more secure load.

RAPID WRAPPER NOW FEATURES:

• Big 2000kg working load. 8rpm rotation speed. • Large 1220mm diameter checker plate turntable. Only 280mm high. • Can be moved around using a standard Hand Pallet Truck. • Engineered notched fork sleeves enables secure stowing on pallet racking. • Can be loaded / re-located / stacked, using a walkie stacker or forklift. • Heavy duty, low voltage (24V) foot control with 3 metre cable and removable plug. • Fitted with a 240v socket. Just plug any extension lead into it. • Finished in Safety Yellow.

Rapid Wrapper is around half the price of basic masted semi auto stretch wrap machines. It is perfect for small businesses and as a stand by for larger businesses for when their expensive stretch wrappers fail, and they have to wait for them to be repaired. When not required, the notched fork sleeves enable the Rapid Wrapper to be stowed on pallet racking, with no fear of falling off. The cables can be unplugged, so there are no trailing cables to worry about. This enables the best use of your work space. Bring down the wrapper only when you need it! With no mast, there is no limit to the size of the load to be wrapped, so long lengths of pipe, or pallets full of bumper bars present no problem to the Rapid Wrapper. PACK KING
