BUDGET CUTS WILL HAVE GRAVE CONSEQUENCES FOR INDUSTRY, WARNS SENATOR CARR The federal government’s decision to axe key innovation programs will have grave consequences for industry, Shadow Minister for Industry and Innovation, Senator Kim Carr has warned. In an exclusive interview with Industry Update, Senator Carr said the federal government, with its drastic Budget cuts, has abandoned a 10-year agenda to foster innovation. “The government has turned its back on a sector that employs nearly a million Australians, he said. “Australia’s future growth, as well as its present prosperity, is at stake.” Senator Carr claims Australia’s Department of Industry has lost control of industry policy.

Senator Carr said programs such as “That role has been taken over by the Commercialisation Australia, Enterprise Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet.” Connect, the Enterprise Solution Program, At a Senate estimates hearing last month, “demoralized” department staff confirmed that Industry Innovation Precincts, the Innovation Investment Fund, Australian Industry two officers had been seconded to PM&C Participation Plans, and Textile, Clothing and to prepare a new industry statement, Senator Footwear co-investment faced cuts totalling Carr said. $845 million. “Industry Minister Ian Macfarlane has been “On top of all this, $1 billion has been left presiding over a department with not much slashed from skills and training programs, to do and – after a whopping $2.5 billion has including the Workforce English Language been ripped from industry and innovation All Mitsubishi lasers feature next generation cross-flow resonators. and Literary Program, the Workforce programs in the federal budget – too few This exciting, new technology results in outstanding savings on maintenance and running costs, whilst still delivering the class Development Fund and the Alternative resources to do it with. leading performance that you expect from Mitsubishi. and research are more effective in creating long-term growth and employment than corporate tax cuts or even infrastructure spending. Senator Carr said the “biggest furphy of all is the announcement of a $155 million “growth fund to compensate for the demise of the local automotive industry. “Calculations for the fund were based on the estimated consequences of the carmakers leaving Victoria and South Australia but ignored the impact on components manufacturers in other states, he said. “And when the funding profiles are projected to 2020-21, $155 million pales beside nearly $1 billion in cuts from auto industry programs. Senator Carr said cuts to these programs “did not have to happen. “Instead of dismissing the car makers as a cabal of rent seekers, an astute government might have followed the example of the UK,

said Senator Carr. Since the 1980s in the UK the automotive industry has moved away from high-volume car production towards niche products, especially in engine production. “Japanese manufacturers were encouraged to enter the market – not always with subsidies – and a once-languishing industry has been saved and transformed. “With a similar strategy Australia’s auto industry could also rise, phoenix-like from the ashes. But that is a vision the government refuses to see. However, Industry Minister Ian Macfarlane has strongly defended the Government’s new budget measures, saying that industry policy is at the heart of the Government’s economic strategy. “The Australian Government is setting a new direction for industry policy focussed on new jobs, new investments and making Australian industry more competitive, Mr

Macfarlane said. Mr Macfarlane said the budget focused on creating the right conditions for investment and jobs growth. “Industry policy will no longer be an overlapping plethora of small grants and entitlements, he said. “This new approach is setting the right economic environment by reducing red tape, equipping businesses with key market information and the opportunity to expand or export, and reigniting the Australian spirit of entrepreneurship. Mr Macfarlane said the Government is consulting closely with industry on the implementation of the Entrepreneurs’ Infrastructure Program. “This consultation will ensure the program is targeted to industry’s needs. “The feedback from industry has been positive and there has been an understanding of the need to make hard decisions in the Budget to deal with the previous

Government’s legacy of debt and deficit. Mr Macfarlane said the federal government program to build new industry infrastructure has been received with great enthusiasm. “By strengthening the Budget we will strengthen the economy and boost business confidence. ALCOHOL KILLS ONE PERSON EVERY 10 SEC Alcohol kills 3.3 million people worldwide each year, according to the World Health Organisation. This is more than AIDS, tuberculosis and violence combined – and the WHO warns that booze consumption is on the rise. Including drink driving, alcohol-induced violence and abuse, and a multitude of diseases and disorders, alcohol causes one in 20 deaths globally every year, the UN health agency said. This translates into one death every 10 seconds. The research follows a previous study by Monash University in Melbourne which found that about half of male manufacturing workers (49 percent) drink alcohol at risky levels and more than one in four smoke (27 percent). The WorkHealth study involving 500,000 workers found that male manufacturing workers are the most likely of all Victorian workers to have a high risk of type 2 diabetes – due mainly to excessive alcohol consumption and

smoking. This is a real worry considering 75% of workers in the manufacturing industry are male. WorkHealth Ambassador, Wayne Kayler-Thomson, said resistance among males to head to the doctor and be proactive about their health was a factor in these results. “WorkSafe research shows that time, cost and a ‘she’ll be right’ attitude are the major stumbling blocks when it comes to getting a health check, with males far less likely to have a preventative health check than women,” Mr Kayler-Thomson said. Drinking is linked to more than 200 health conditions, including liver cirrhosis and some cancers. And alcohol abuse also makes people more susceptible to infectious diseases like tuberculosis, HIV and pneumonia. The WHO study is a wake-up call for the entire manufacturing industry. Alarm bells have been ringing for far too long – it’s now time for action.

BAC Vertical Drawer, Racking & Shelving

The Federal Budget has delivered a mixed bag for Australian manufacturers. While there have been cuts to nearly all of the Labor Government’s major innovation programs, new initiatives have been announced in a bid to revive key industry sectors. The planned axing of the Australian Renewable Energy Agency and severe cutbacks to the CSIRO has understandably caused much angst in science and technology circles. Likewise, the dismantling of assistance programs such as Enterprise Connect, Commercialisation Australia and the Innovation Investment Fund has created shockwaves in many industry circles. As a compromise, the government has announced cuts in company tax rates – music to the ears of many struggling SMEs. One shining light in a tough Budget has been the establishment of a Trade Support Loans Program to encourage more young people to complete their apprenticeships. Under the new program apprentices will receive a loan of up to $20,000 over a four-year apprenticeship.

BAC High-Density Drawer Storage

The new scheme will be targeted at occupations on the National Skills Needs List, including plumbers, diesel mechanics, electricians and fitters. It replaces the Tools for your Trade program that gave cash to apprentices to buy equipment needed for their work. The government has also announced the establishment of an Industry Skills Fund, providing $476 million over the next four years. This comes at a price. The government has announced it will axe the longstanding Workplace English Language and Literacy (WELL) program. This a real concern. Kate Carnell, the newly appointed CEO of the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI), Australia's largest and most representative business organisation, says the “free-fall” in apprenticeship numbers is deeply alarming. Industry and government must work together to restore incentives and reduce the cost for employers to take on apprentices, she says. We couldn’t agree more.

HOW THE FEDERAL BUDGET WILL BENEFIT INDUSTRY Ian Macfarlane MP, Minister for Industry The 2014 Budget has set the future direction for the way that Government and industry work together to support Australian business and the Australian economy. It is part of the Government’s Economic Action Strategy. The role of Government is to provide the framework that will give Australian manufacturers, businesses and innovators the environment to grow, create new opportunities and supply new markets. The Budget gives small and medium sized businesses the resources they need to successfully diversify and improve competiveness in a global market. We are simplifying and streamlining the programs we deliver and the way we deliver them. These programs are now easier to understand and easier to access, through the new Single Business Service that will be run by my department. This means that businesses can get the information they need online, via phone or email and through a face-to-face business network. The service will provide access to new Budget programs, like the $476 million Industry Skills Fund, that leads the move to training and support services that are focused on the needs of employers. This program will deliver around 200,000 targeted training places and support services, over four years, which are designed to fill skills gaps quickly from January 2015. This will ensure that workers have the qualifications and skills, including support

for language, literacy and numeracy, to make Australian industry more flexible and successful. We have tackled the high apprenticeship drop-out rate and the impact this has on the supply of skilled labour. At the moment apprenticeship completion rates sits at around 50 percent. That’s why we are introducing Trade Support Loans. These loans will target apprentices in occupations in the greatest demand, including plumbers, diesel mechanics, electricians and fitters. Apprentices in these fields will receive loans of up to $20,000, to help with the costs of learning and completing apprenticeships. As an additional incentive, apprentices who successfully complete their apprenticeship will have the amount of their loan reduced by 20 percent. In addition, the Government has committed $5 million to continuing targeted mentoring support to help apprentices stay in training. We are also supporting businesses to support themselves with the new $484 million Entrepreneurs’ Infrastructure Program from July 1. This program will drive business competitiveness and promote economic growth through supporting business improvement and the commercialisation of new ideas. It will equip small to medium enterprises with the management and business skills to

lead change and expansion. Businesses will have access to market and industry information and business management advice from experienced private sector providers with links to supply chains. It will also bring research and business together to develop and commercialise home-grown ideas, with the support of specialist expertise in intellectual property and private capital. The Government is also committed to businesses transitioning from traditional manufacturing to higher value and growth markets, with a new $50 million Manufacturing Transition Grants Program. Grants of up to $10 million will be awarded to manufacturers moving to knowledgeintensive or niche manufacturing sectors, where they can gain a competitive advantage. The Prime Minister’s Industry Investment and Competitiveness Agenda will focus on our strengths, create jobs and exploit our competitive advantages. When the Agenda is released later this year it will include initiatives to promote national competitiveness and productivity by reducing the costs of doing business, encouraging innovation, boosting investment and business growth. By building on the success of our industries this Budget gives a framework to encourage the next wave of entrepreneurship and investment in the industries of the future.

STRONG RESULTS FROM NMW 2014

This year’s National Manufacturing Week (NMW) in Sydney in May delivered solid outcomes for participants. More than 300 exhibiting companies made new links within Australia's fast-changing manufacturing industry following another successful show. Preliminary figures reveal that about 6,300 trade visitors attended NMW 2014, taking advantage of a host of new features to build very strong links with industry suppliers. A notable feature of NMW's visitor base was the high quality of visitors. More than 40 percent of visitors were executives with purchasing power – representing an increased ratio of decisionmakers in the visitor mix. This included engineers and Directors/ CEOs/GMs/Owners and equivalent from Government, Defence, the resources sector and other large-budget organisations through to innovative smaller businesses seeking out high-value new technologies. Also notable was the success of new programs designed to spark closer interaction between exhibitors and visitors. The popular NMW Solutions Theatres provided a rolling program of discussions on strategies for boosting innovation,

productivity and speed to market. The presentations – from 35 experts across four different hubs on the exhibition floor – offered new ideas and interaction with exhibitors. NMW also saw the introduction of Oneto-One Meetings, which gave exhibitors and potential buyers the opportunity to be paired for focused discussions. Some 60 meetings were held, resulting in solid leads for exhibitors including Russell Brinkworth from Leussink Engineering. "I had opportunities for several meetings - and one, in particular, was just outstanding. I was able to meet with the GM of Production of a company that has 12 welding bays, and who commented that our gear solved all his problems with fixture changes. He's someone who might not have stumbled across Leussink without the meetings service - and for our company, he's a great new lead," said Brinkworth. A major Networking Event at the end of Day 1 on May 13, plus two Speed Networking sessions in the Solutions Theatres – brought dozens of participants

In the swing … at Golfzon in Sydney you can choose from 200 world class courses

face-to-face, resulting in some stellar connections. Among contacts made were with buyers from a major Defence organisation, visiting NMW to scope new ideas and suppliers. NMW 2014 also introduced a Passport Competition, with visitors collecting details from 10 nominated exhibitors. This meant they could enter a draw to win a trip for two to Fiji. Competition winner Harry Pannekoek of WA-based company Swivelpole (makers of high-safety lighting) noted that he had flown in with four of the company's directors and spent several days researching new ideas at this year's event. NMW Exhibition Director, Anthony

Reed said NMW had once again helped create real opportunities for participants. "It is always fantastic to see people from so many different industry sectors making new connections and talking about new ideas. There was a real buzz across NMW 2014 – which I am sure will translate into real opportunities in the weeks and months ahead," Reed said. NMW 2015 will be held in Melbourne from May 26-29, co-located with Austech and the SMART Supply Chain & Logistics Conference & Expo. 3D PRINTING BOOM SHOWS NO SIGN OF SLOWING DOWN With significant advancements in technology in recent years, 3D printing is set to soon overhaul traditional methods of product development and manufacturing. Research released earlier this year found that additive manufacturing/3D printing has grown by an average of 32.3 percent each year for the past three years. Wohlers Associates, a research consultancy focused on additive manufacturing and 3D printing, has been tracking the industry for more than 25 years. Its latest research shows the market for 3D printing, consisting of all products and services worldwide, grew to $3.07 billion last year. Compared with an averaged 27 percent growth rate over the past 26 years, the compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 34.9 percent is the highest in 17 years. The CAGR for the past three years (2011–2013) was 32.3 percent. Wohlers Associates believes the industry will continue strong growth over the next several years, fueled by sales of under $5,000 “personal” 3D printers, as well as the expanded use of the technology for the production of parts, especially metal, that go into final products. One person who is not surprised with the meteoric global growth of 3D printing is Ido Eylon, Stratasys’ South Asia General Manager. The word is spreading fast throughout the world about the benefits of 3D printing. “Asia-Pacific is the fastest growing market in the world for us,” Eylon told Industry Update during a recent visit to Sydney. “We are committed to the Australia and New Zealand markets – we see a lot of potential here.” Based in Singapore, Eylon was in Sydney to inspect Stratasys’ impressive display at the National Manufacturing Week exhibition in May. Stratasys sponsored the event’s inaugural

Additive Manufacturing product zone – a star attraction for NMW visitors. Eylon says shows such as NMW play a key role in educating the market (mainly manufacturers) to the benefits of 3D printing technology. “As industry leaders we (Stratasys) play an important role in educating the market … and people are starting to understand the benefits, he says. “Education is a big part of our marketing strategy – it is key.” Has Australia been slow to embrace 3D printing technology? “It’s all about making people more aware of the technology … sometimes it requires stepping out of your comfort zone,” Eylon says. Eylon believes 3D printing offers many advantages over traditional manufacturing. Though 3D printing will not replace traditional manufacturing “anytime soon”, it is revolutionizing the way people make things. With 3D printing technology, manufacturers can: • Save production time and put products into the marketplace much faster • Reduce the cost of error • Become more creative and • Maintain confidentiality by producing prototypes in-house rather than outsource Why choose Stratasys technology? “Stratasys offers the widest range of options and solutions, says Eylon. “If companies are looking for a general purpose solution, then we are the best choice they can make.” Stratasys, says Eylon, invests heavily in R&D and leads the way in innovation. The company recently launched the new Objet500 Connex3 printer – the first multimaterial, colour 3D printer. The Connex3 is the only 3D printer that creates brilliantly coloured prototypes with a range of multi-material components including rigid, flexible, clear and durable.

The Objet500 Connex3 lets you incorporate as many as 46 colors into one prototype, from true jet black to sunny yellow to shocking magenta and hundreds of blended hues. With the Connex3 you can build rigid, rubber-like and clear parts into one model and offers hundreds of composite materials, blended right in the 3D printer. Manufacturers can produce prototypes that will resemble the actual end product. “You don’t want to make a decision on a prototype that is very different from the end product, says Eylon. “That’s why we are striving to get our products to produce prototypes that are nearly identical to the real product.” Eylon says 3D printing is now being used by industry sectors across the board. This includes defence, aerospace, medical, automotive, consumer goods and electronics. “Anybody who makes a tangible product is a potential beneficiary.” Growth areas include the education and medical applications including body parts and dental. As well as exhibitions like NMW, Stratasys’ education also involves institutions such as universities. “It is our job to educate the market and make sure the right message is out there,”

he says. “NMW is part of the education process. It’s a big show. This year was the first time Stratasys has had a major presence at an Australian trade show. “Many of the people who attend are our potential customers – beneficiaries of the technology we offer, says Eylon. “We are here to spread the word and make sure everyone is aware of the benefits.” “We are looking to interact with them to explain and educate about this new revolution.” Stratasys will also be one of the major exhibitors at the new Inside 3D Printing Conference and Expo, to be held in Melbourne on July 9-10. Run by Mediabistro (formerly WebMediaBrands), the expo debuted in New York’s Javits Centre in April last year, with follow-up shows at San Jose and Chicago before being held in Singapore for the first time last October. “We are looking forward to that show to further spread the message,” says Eylon. So will every home have a 3D printer in the future? “It’s hard to predict the future, says Eylon. “But what I can say is that 3D printing is becoming more accessible and more affordable for the masses.”

MELBOURNE MANUFACTURING GETS A BOOST More than 65 new manufacturing jobs will be created in Melbourne’s north by the first project to be funded under a new investment and innovation program targeting the region. In April, Minister for Industry Ian Macfarlane and Victorian Minister for Manufacturing David Hodgett announced the first grant of $1 million under the joint Commonwealth/State Melbourne North Innovation and Investment Fund (MNIIF). Epping business New Age Caravans will receive the grant to undertake a $3.7 million project to establish an advanced robotic manufacturing centre. The new centre is aimed at improving the productivity and quality of its caravan and mining accommodation unit manufacturing activities to meet rising demand. It is the first of many projects to be funded under MNIIF, a tripartite agreement between the Commonwealth Government, the Victorian Government and Ford Australia. “This project is a great example of an innovative company in a growing market that is driving real improvements in productivity for the business, said Mr Macfarlane. And the jobs that will be created by the new project would be suitable for ex-Ford and automotive supply chain workers, with only minimal retraining required. “Australian manufacturing is repositioning

to take advantage of new markets and new jobs. Using the existing skills base and knowledge of local workers is a priority in this process as we move into a new era for Australian industry,” Mr Macfarlane said. Mr Hodgett said that this was the first of a number of projects that would help grow manufacturing jobs in the region. The Geelong Region Innovation and Investment Fund (GRIIF) and the Melbourne’s North Innovation and Investment Fund (MNIIF) are competitive, merit-based grant programs. The funds are based on a tripartite agreement between the Commonwealth Government, the Victorian Government and Ford Australia. The federal government will contribute $30 million, the Victorian Government $9 million and Ford Australia $10 million. Of the total $49 million in funding, $24.5 million will be made available to the GRIIF and $24.5 million will be made available to the MNIIF. The funds were set up to help Ford manufacturing employees who will lose their jobs following the closure of the local manufacturing facility in 2016. Ford contributed $10 million to the fund and plans to further help employees identify new opportunities at a jobs fair at its Broadmeadows facility in April.

SIX FOOLPROOF STEPS TO DEVELOPING A QUALITY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM By David Gray

In a climate of increasingly demanding customer expectations, how does an engineering business provide outstanding quality without hurting profit and growth? With expectations high, businesses must focus not just on what they do but how they achieve their outcomes. Delivering an impressive customer result is often linked to the quality of a company’s internal operations. While most businesses understand this synergy, many fall short of having a strong quality management system (QMS) in place. It’s surprising that most organisations continue to operate without implementing an effective quality management system, especially when failing to do so can be detrimental to both reputation and profit. The consequences may include ongoing operational delays, budget overruns, and a waste of precious resources. As a result, both a business’s reputation and profit may be at serious risk. Additionally, some employees responsible for quality management morph into the role without any official training or education. In some companies quality management can land on the lap of an employee who hasn’t undergone any training whatsoever. While this may have been a natural step within the business structure, it may be detrimental to overall performance. An efficient quality management system, managed by a qualified staff

member, improves performance and internal efficiency, identifies inconsistencies and problems and recognises ways to resolve. As a result, staff morale and productivity is increased and consumers are given confidence in the business. Quality managers looking to improve need to evaluate their skillsets in accordance with recognised standards such as ISO 9001, the international benchmark for any employee looking to implement a Quality Management System. SAI Global’s Auditing Quality Management System training course provides a portable qualification that provides the necessary knowledge and skills in accordance with the standard. Remotely accessible, the 8-10 hour course is cost effective, flexible and attractive to time-poor businesses. Based on the official ISO 9001 standard, here are my 6 foolproof steps to instill quality processes in your business: 1. Document your business model As a first step, ensure there is a person responsible for quality management. This person is to ensure the company has a policy in place that defines its ‘quality promise’, underpinned with stated objectives and targets for employees. Be sure to include instructional documents as well as a defined ‘roadmap’ to guide employees through to fulfilling that promise. This information is to be

accurate, accessible to those that need it, and detailed to a sufficient level. 2. Build relationships Have a clear understanding of your point of difference in the marketplace – this means you must know your competitors. Know your customers, too, and what they value most about your products and services. Communicate this information to your employees, ensuring they understand what is needed to ensure happy and satisfied customers. 3. Enable and empower your people Engage employees by delegating responsibility and authority to deliver the promise of quality made by the organisation to its customers. Remember if you spell out these aspects of operation, employees understand what is expected of them. Without these fundamental guidelines, employees will not understand the rules and they will develop their own which may not align with the expectations of the organisation or the customer. You must also ensure that employees have the knowledge and skills to perform their work with confidence. 4. Deliver on your promises Make sure all operational aspects of the organisation are working cohesively to deliver the promise of quality, ensuring not to forget those aspects that are outsourced to external third-party providers. Do they understand what your promise of quality is, and their role in

keeping this promise? 5. Evaluate and seek improvement Objectives and targets are of little value, unless they are used as the baseline to gauge success. Monitor and measure performance results to determine whether the promise of quality was achieved. And if not, determine why not. Using these results, seek to understand what needs to change in your business roadmap and operations. 6. Apply the wisdom Up to now you’ve assessed the possible roadblocks to quality. Now you must remove them through controlled changes in your operations. If you have a sufficient quality plan in place you will be able to assess which process is most appropriate to the issue and apply the solution in a timely manner to achieve results. David Gray is a trainer and quality expert at leading business improvement organisation SAI Global. For further information on quality management visit www.saiglobal. com/assurance

WAKE UP CALL: ARE SMARTPHONE WORKERS BEING EXPLOITED?

An investigation into the electronics industry has revealed 97 percent of companies fail to pay factory workers producing electronic devices enough to cover their basic needs. The findings, unveiled recently by Fairfax Media, have renewed concerns about workers in developing countries being exploited in the production of mobile phones, tablets and televisions. The Electronics Industry Trends report, released by Baptist World Aid, examined 39 companies’ efforts to stamp out oppressive conditions in their supply chains. Researchers relied on publicly available information and feedback from the companies, of which about half took part, to rank them on policies, transparency and worker rights. The report’s co-author Gershon Nimbalker said minimum wages in manufacturing countries such as China, India and South Korea often failed to cover basic living costs, which was "critical in empowering individuals and communities to overcome poverty."

The report also found that 18 per cent of tech companies had only partial knowledge of where their raw materials were sourced, which Mr Nimbalker said increased the likelihood of slavery and child labour. Mr Nimbalker said most of the 21 million victims of forced labour worldwide worked for companies supplying goods to countries such as Australia. He said modelling showed that increasing workers’ wages to meet their basic needs would add $2 to $9 to the retail cost of a smartphone. So the big question is: Would you pay $9 more for your smartphone if it guaranteed better working conditions for the person who made it? Staff at Industry Update all say they would pay a little more for a mobile smartphone if it helped to prevent the exploitation of workers in developing countries. Our production and design manager Angela Hankinson said she would happily pay an extra $9 or even more. “If we can afford the luxury of buying a

smart phone we can definitely afford to pay a little bit extra, Angela said. “We would easily spend $9 on a coffee and a treat, lunch, drinks after work and so many more unnecessary things so it's without question that paying an extra $9 can easily be done.” “This could make a big difference to someone who is working below a minimum wage. It may be the difference between eating or not.” Finance and Accounts manager Michelle Alcock agrees. “I would definitely pay an extra $9 for a smart phone if I knew the workers would benefit from it.

“I guess some people would be interested to know where the phones are made and where the materials come from, but if I was buying a phone I probably wouldn't give it much thought.” Our advertising sales manager Sean Fletcher had the last word: “I would happily pay $9 more over the lifespan of the phone if the information was available when purchasing the phone. “People nowadays just want the best price or best deal on a phone, but they don't necessarily do any research or ask any questions as to how or where the product materials are sourced.”

Manufacturing jobs now represent about 9-10 percent of total employment compared to 25 percent in the mid-70s. The demise of Ford, Holden and Toyota did not come as a great surprise to Professor Borland. Nor did Alcoa’s plant closing and crises at Cadbury and SPC. Australia simply can’t compete with low wage economies when it comes to labour intensive manufacturing like car making or textiles, clothing and footwear (TFC). “But we are clearly still competitive in some high end manufacturing areas, such as food processing,” says Professor Borland. “Manufacturing in Australia has always been at a bit of a disadvantage,” he explains. A relatively small domestic market, as well as our distance to the biggest world markets places us at a disadvantage. “Manufacturing in the 20th century has been about large-scale production to gain economies of scale, says Professor Borland. “With our small population and distance from the richer world markets we have never had access to the size of market that is needed to underpin large-scale

production.” However, Australia has been fortunate to compensate manufacturing “losses” with a robust mining sector and other high productivity industries. In the 1980s many industries were protected by Government subsidies and tariffs. “Once Government withdrew significant amounts of protection it became inevitable those sectors would fall because of the strength of international forces, Professor Borland says. Because of high labour costs, Australia has been forced to change its focus on industry that is not labour intensive. The fact that a change in focus has resulted in job losses is regrettable, Professor Borland says. But Australia is not alone when it comes to a decline in the manufacturing sector. Other “high wage” economies like the US and UK have been in the same boat. But US manufacturing has been boosted by the strong emergence of its IT industry, which has helped to compensate for job losses suffered in the past three decades.

THE CHANGING FACE OF AUSTRALIAN MANUFACTURING

In his research, Professor Borland found the composition of manufacturing employment has undergone significant change in the past three decades. And there has also been a substantial convergence in the relative importance of manufacturing between states. “In 1985 one in five jobs in Victoria was in manufacturing and only one in 10 in manufacturing jobs were in Queensland, but today basically every state has the same share of its jobs in manufacturing industry, he says. “So while there is a lot of focus on the decline in Victoria and South Australia, in fact all states’ fortunes depend to pretty much an equal degree on manufacturing.” Victoria and NSW have seen their aggregate share of manufacturing industry employment decline from 69.5 per cent to 57.7 per cent. At the same time Queensland’s share has grown from 11 per cent to 21 per cent. Professor Borland’s analysis shows the food products sector has come to comprise a much larger share of manufacturing industry employment in the past three decades. At the same time the textiles, clothing and footwear sector has seen the largest fall in importance.

INTRODUCING TURBOSHIELD: THE NEXT GENERATION OF SAFETY FACESHIELD The face of safety has changed with the introduction of the Honeywell Turboshield extra high impact rated faceshield. Workers dealing with chemicals, molten metals, hot solids, or high level impact risks need a faceshield they can always rely on. Honeywell Turboshield delivers superior quality protection at a competitive pricewithout compromising on safety. Features include: • Increased safety protection • Better all-day comfort and ergonomics • Quick and simple visor exchange • Groundbreaking hard hat adapter • Compatibility with a wide range of other personal protective equipment. The Honeywell Turboshield visor provides 50 per cent more chin coverage than a traditional style faceshield, without the need for any bulky additional accessories. When safety equipment is comfortable to wear, it gets worn by workers. The Honeywell Turboshield’s suspension has tripled the contact area with the head compared to traditional suspension, eliminating pressure points for maximum

comfort throughout the day. Dual material technology cushions the head, and the breathable headband is removable and washable. Honeywell Turboshield is also adjustable for a wide range of facial structures with easy-to-use ergonomic adjustment knobs that can even be operated while wearing gloves. Honeywell’s visor exchange system allows visors to be released from the Turboshield with the push of a button and securely attached within seconds. Visors are sold separately, allowing you to select the correct one for your safety needs. Turboshield visors are available in clear, for most indoor applications – Shade 3.0, a welding shade for torch brazing applications and Shade 5.0, a welding shade suitable for cutting operations. The clear visors are additionally available either uncoated or with anti-fog Hardcoat for extended visor life. The toric lens provides for stunning clarity of vision and an increased field of view. The hard hat adapter is compatible with

most major hard hats, including the entire Honeywell hard hat range. Only full-brim hard hats cannot be used in conjunction. Featuring the same innovative visor exchange system as the faceshield, the Turboshield hard hat adapter combines a smooth pivot action with a positive-locking hinge to keep the visor securely in place, either raised or lowered. Hard hat accessory slots are left free for additional personal protective equipment, and an integrated brim guard protects against falling debris, providing a gap-free fit. The visor slides 170mm back when worn with the Turboshield hard hat adapter, improving weight distribution and balance. The dual hinged design of the hard hat adapter also increases clearance up to 100mm. Also, the Honeywell Turboshield is compatible with a wide range of personal protective equipment available from Honeywell Safety Products, such as Howard Leight by Honeywell helmet-mounted earmuffs, Honeywell disposable respirators,

GOOD OIL: GREAT FOR MACHINERY, BUT NOT FOR HANDS We’ve all heard it before: ”a bit of grease never hurt anyone.” Unfortunately, this is not true, because commonly used grease and lubricants are capable of causing health complications that range from contact dermatitis up to those more serious, including a variety of cancers. Engineering oil and the oily liquids used in machine maintenance aren’t harmless. They are chemicals, and the chemical reaction they cause can harm workers the same as any other chemical. Oil is a combination of many substances, including powerful neurotoxins, which can cause a range of symptoms including nausea, headache, euphoria and dizziness. These symptoms are signs that the nervous system of those exposed to oil is being damaged. “An added risk of oil exposure can be a lack of grip when trying to adjust greasy machinery where injuries can be sustained when hands slip. When workers are focused on getting the job done, it can be tempting to see gloves as an impediment to completing the task”, said Ansell marketing manager, David Nicholls. “Even on sites where it’s mandatory

for gloves to be worn, many workers take them off, thinking that this will improve their dexterity and speed. However, in doing so, they are unaware that oil, dust and small, sharp pieces of debris can be a nasty combination added to the surfaces that comes into contact with exposed skin. Getting a firm hold on a slippery surface can be quite a challenge but when other materials are added that can dig into hands and make one’s grip less sure, it can protract the time taken to complete a job. “Oil is used heavily in the majority of mining sites and associated maintenance

areas and wearing gloves is the best way to keep one’s hands away from this potential skin contamination. “The Ansell AlphaTec 58-430 and 58435 gloves address the need for protection against chemicals found in oils, as well as the common problem of wet and oily grip. When discussing needs with industry representatives, it was a common response that people wanted to improve their glove’s grip,” Nicholls said. The importance of safety in the workplace is second to none. Keeping your greatest assets safe is a primary objective. An important part of a safe workplace is the presence of safety signs. Being able to operate machinery or manoeuvre through a factory or construction site safely is a crucial aspect in every work environment. Though sometimes viewed as a legal requirement rather than a practical safety tool, the reality is that safety signs are used every day by your employees and visitors to identify hazards and prevent accidents and injury. Signs that instruct the use of personal protective equipment; locate first aid, fire and safety equipment or guide people to exits in an emergency are equally important. Mastercut Technologies Managing Director, Mr Jim Cove, warned that companies who install insufficient signage are taking a great risk. “Employees and visitors are at risk of injury every day, having signs to warn them of any hazard or danger is an important aspect to keeping them safe,” Mr Cove said. “There is a huge difference between a quality sign and a makeshift one, you can certainly tell the difference just by looking at them, but durability is important too.”

BREATHE EASY AND CUT COSTS WITH HONEYWELL RESPIRATOR KITS Respiratory protection just got simpler with Honeywell Safety Products’ Respirator Kits. These conveniently packaged kits take the hassle out of selecting, transporting, and storing respirators, along with filter and cleaning wipes. The kits are available in both a welders’ and a spray version. The spray kit, which is suitable for spray painting, roller painting, and agricultural spraying, protects against organic vapours and particulates. The welders’ kit, recommended for woodworking, welding, and sanding, is suitable for dusty, particulate filled environments where nuisance levels of organic vapours or acid gases are present. The inclusion of filters in the convenient and easily distinguishable lunchbox kits means it’s always easy to have the right protection for the job at hand. Honeywell Respirator Kits also feature numerous innovations to improve worker

comfort and productivity. A latex-free half mask means that the respirator is appropriate for all workers, including those with latex allergies. Less dead air space in the mask provides for an increased flow of fresh air, increasing worker productivity. Additionally, strategic placement of the exhalation vents prevents exhaled breath from remaining in the mask, leading to a cooler, more comfortable mask. Honeywell’s expertise in superior-fitting personal protective equipment has also contributed to the comfortable design of the Honeywell Respirator Kits range. The sealing area of the mask is of variable thickness, providing greater comfort while flexing to conform to the bridge of the nose, without risking collapse of the mask. All Honeywell Respirator Kits are certified to AS/NZS 1716:2012. For selection advice, consult AS/NZS 1715 and if contaminant levels exceed workplace exposure standards, a higher level of protection should be considered.

INTEGRATED DRIVE SYSTEMS A ‘SNACK’ FOR SEW-EURODRIVE The choice between fully integrated systems or a mix and match approach can be a difficult one for engineers seeking to optimise drives and control systems. By selecting from different suppliers, they can match each component in the system to their overall design. Alternatively, integration offers simplicity, guaranteed compatibility and the advantages of dealing with a single supplier. In a recently installed snack food conveyor system, an integrated system of MOVIFIT drives was implemented without compromising the design objectives. A quick check of the local supermarket shelves gives a clue as to the complexity of the snack food manufacturing process. The variety on display is enormous. Everything from high-energy breakfast alternatives and morning pick-me-ups to chips and party foods is readily available. Imagine then, the logistical exercise of continuously moving all these different snack foods through a clean manufacturing plant, where hygiene, energy efficiency and reliability are the priorities. To achieve the tight production schedules, all these items must be boxed in their various manufacturing zones and moved along sophisticated conveyor lines to the appropriate packing and despatch areas. Design of the conveyor systems and

The layout of the snack food plant called for a complex system of conveyor lines

the motors and drives that power them is of critical importance in this environment. According to Jason Thompson, Director of Contech Engineering, there was no need for compromise when designing the drive system for a recently installed snack food conveyor system in Sydney. By choosing integrated and flexible motors and drives from a single supplier that was able to meet the technical requirements for the entire system, his design team had the best of both worlds. While the mix and match approach had worked well in the past, the opportunity to source suitable drives and electronics from a single supplier, SEW-EURODRIVE, produced the optimal result at the snack food manufacturing plant. The layout of the snack food plant called for a complex set of conveyor lines, feeding into the despatch area like a multitude of tributaries flowing into a major river. From the manufacturing line, each snack food carton is placed on a conveyor that joins other lines before moving at a steady rate to an upper level in the manufacturing plant. To achieve this, and to keep the snack food production targets on track, the design incorporated a number of high grip and inclining conveyors. At the upper level, these lines feed into a single conveyor that carries the cartons to the

distribution area. Thompson had a clear goal in mind when planning the project. “We were looking for a reliable and integrated system of drives to keep the conveyor belts moving,” he says. “We wanted simple drive operation and decentralised installation, to save on space and cabling costs.” To accomplish this goal, Thompson deployed 34 SEW-EURODRIVE MOVIFIT FC, 0.75 kW variable speed drives. “The decentralised control units of the drive systems required less cable and fewer cabinets in the field, and that was where we made most of the space savings,” he says. “This reduced the design complexity and overall costs, while allowing for easy diagnostics and maintenance. The simplified design also reduced possible sources of errors in the wiring-up stage.” The decision to close couple the gear motors to SEW-EURODRIVE decentralised motor controllers was a significant step, says John Gattellari, National Industry Specialist Food & Beverage, with SEW-EURODRIVE. Gattellari says that the MOVIFIT solution allows for flexible topology, which simplified the design process for the snack food conveyor system. This was aided by built-in local intelligence and local control functions.

Isolators are also local, providing an important safety feature. Additional protection devices were not required for the snack food application. This is typical of such projects and applies to wet areas as well. Energy efficiency was another important consideration in the design of the snack food conveyor system. “The energy efficiency of the drives reduces costs, while also complying with new energy efficiency laws,” says Thompson. Despite the complexity of the conveyor system, Thompson says that because of the system design and the equipment chosen, disassembly and reassembly on site were easily implemented. The integrated design approach, with all drives sourced from a single supplier, allowed Thompson’s team to reduce the complexity of the conveyor system by minimising the number of different components. At all phases of the project – planning, design and implementation – this approach proved to be cost effective and fulfilled all technical requirements. For the snack food conveyor system, integration of the drives was achieved without compromising the design objectives. SEW-EURODRIVE Pty Ltd Ph: 03 9933 1000 www.sew-eurodrive.com.au

Users can now select three of the five programming languages from the International Standard IEC61131-3; Function block diagram, Instruction List and Ladder

New software … Pilz PSS 4000 now with Ladder Diagram

Diagram, providing a higher level of usability and flexibility. All the programming languages can be combined with the innovative PASmulti editor to simplify the design of complex programs – a feature unique to the Pilz model. The introduction of the Ladder Diagram programming follows from the release of Ethernet/IP connectivity in the previous release of PAS4000. The Pilz safety and standard control system can communicate with the common systems via ModbusTCP, Profibus-DP and Ethernet/IP natively, and utilising the additional gateway modules, CANopen and Ethercat. According to Scott Moffat, Pilz Managing Director, the incorporation of the new Ladder Diagram programming now means it’s even

easier for users to pick up the software tool and get to work without any specialist training. “Ladder Diagram, or what is also known as loader logic, is the most common programming language used in Australia, so it’s an important step in the evolution of the PSS 4000 as a complete safety and automation solution. “What’s more, the Ladder Diagram is easy to follow when you’re fault finding a program so it’s great for troubleshooting or diagnosing faults,” said Mr Moffat. Coupled with the PASmulti editor, the PAS4000 Ladder Diagram editor makes setting up a safety PLC system a breeze. The PSS 4000 is versatile enough to be either used as a combined standard and safety PLC or as a standalone Safety PLC. “Pilz has invested heavily in communication

protocols to integrate with a variety of other manufacturers’ control systems. With the raft of communication protocols available we can communicate to the majority of systems on the market today, reliably and robustly,” said Mr Moffat. PSS 4000 has been implemented in solutions for mining, manufacturing, railway, bridge control, cable cars, oil platforms, hospitals, building fire protection and amusement rides. Pilz released the first programmable safety system (PSS) in 1995, and since then it has been a market leader with the safety programmable logic controller (PLC). ADVANTAGES OF TECNOMAGNETE LIFTING MAGNETS In the past, electromagnets used for heavy steel lifting applications have required large amounts of energy to operate. In addition, large battery back-up systems were required to retain the load should a power outage occur during a lift. These back-up systems were cumbersome, heavy, occupied valuable space, and were another item requiring maintenance and attention.

Today, permanent-electro magnets, with no need for battery back-ups are replacing older lifting magnet systems. Permanent-electro lifting magnets rely on electric power only momentarily to energise or de-energise permanent magnet cores. The lifting and load-carrying is done by permanent magnets which support a load indefinitely until intentional de-energising of the permanent magnets. The de-energise

action can only occur after the load is at rest. Distributed in Australia and NZ by Serpent & Dove – Applied Magnetics Pty Ltd, tecnomagnete lifting magnets are available to suit steel plates, slabs, billets, tubes and coils. Serpent and Dove Pty Ltd Ph: 02 9971 7577 www.serpent-dove.com

DEMATIC ROLLS OUT NEW MODULAR CONVEYOR SYSTEM

With the recent release of its new lineshaft conveyors, Dematic has completed the launch of its Modular Conveyor System (MCS) – an integrated family of conveyors suitable for a wide range of applications with varying throughput and product handling requirements. MCS provides a complete range of pre-configured modules to provide highly efficient materials handling functions such as transportation, accumulation, merging, diverting and sorting. Offering exceptional operational versatility, Dematic MCS is suitable for handling a diverse range of products such as cases, totes, trays and parcels in high throughput distribution, manufacturing and 3PL operations. With significant effort having gone into reducing cost, improving flexibility, and simplifying service and maintenance, MCS’ wide-ranging functionality and applications flexibility makes the technology a cost-effective way to provide highlyefficient material flow in both existing and new facilities. A key feature of Dematic MCS is the system’s universal side channel and the use of standard components for all modules, making it possible to change the function of a conveyor without needing to replace entire conveyor sections.

Highly efficient … Dematic’s new modular conveyor system

For example, a section of roller conveyor can be quickly and easily converted to a belt conveyor for handling a wider range of loads. Transportation conveyors can be easily upgraded to accumulation conveyors or vice versa. A right angle transfer can be simply inserted into a section of

conveyor without impacting operational performance. Dematic MCS’ modular design delivers even greater flexibility when relocating or reconfiguring conveyor systems, typically saving many thousands of dollars in complex changeovers. With MCS, conveyor system relocations can now be done quickly, easily and cost effectively. Clever design provides MCS users the benefits of standardisation with the same carrier rollers, motor-driven rollers, segmented belts, electronic sensors, motor controls, zone control logic assemblies, drive belts, and other components used throughout all modules. Dematic MCS also offers more drive options, using AC drive motors, DC low voltage motor-driven rollers, or a combination of both. With this dual offering, the most appropriate drive system can be applied to any conveyor system layout. For example, with long runs of conveyor, it is more cost-effective to use one AC motor instead of multiple motor-driven rollers. These versatile drive solutions not only extend the range of applications, but also offer low energy consumption and high levels of reliability. Dematic MCS features quiet operating rollers and belted conveying surfaces. High strength, one-piece vulcanised belting is used in zone segments to allow precise carton control or for applications that accommodate light weight or poly bagged items. The segmented belt conveyor, driven by motor driven rollers, features automatic tracking and tensioning. Electronic sensing devices are used for load detection. Dematic MCS can be easily integrated with other devices such as scanners, sorters, label printing and application devices, case sealers, in-line weigh scales, palletisers and robotic picking and packing systems. Dematic MCS lets you handle a wide variety of items. With an all belt surface, it is possible to handle both large and

small items simultaneously. Even many irregularly shaped, difficult to convey items can be handled with precision, delivering greater accuracy, throughput, flexibility and productivity. Motorised roller conveyors are designed to transport and accumulate cartons and totes over a wide variety of applications including transfers, curves and inclines. Motorised rollers allow for on-demand operation only powering the rollers or zones when cartons are present, making their operation energy-efficient. Accumulation conveyors are used to temporarily stop, hold and release materials; a common requirement in both manufacturing and warehousing materials handling systems, and enable goods to accumulate along a line without pressure buildup. With the ability to drive multiple conveying functions such as transportation, zone-routing, merging, diverting and sortation, as well as curves and transfers, lineshaft conveyors provide economical, reliable performance across a wide range of applications. Significant effort has gone into reducing cost and simplifying service and maintenance. MCS lineshaft conveyors’ modular design and wide-ranging functionality and applications flexibility makes them a versatile materials handling solution, which can be easily and cost-effectively upgraded whenever requirements change. MCS offers a range of diverting mechanisms including: • Right angle transfer • High speed right angle transfer • Steerable wheel divert • Positive belt divert Benefits include: • Extensive applications flexibility • Easy to re-configure layout • Simple to change functionality • Simplified servicing • Reduced parts inventory • Conveys extensive range of load types • Excellent product control • Uses fewer drives • Improved energy efficiency • Low operating and maintenance costs Dematic Pty Ltd Ph: 02 9486 5555 www.dematic.com.au

SIPPEL AIRSKATE FOR SAFETY AND SIMPLICITY This simple Four AS22-HP Airskate System (pictured) from the Sippel Group can be set up to move equipment weighing up to 16-tonnes. It floats a load suspended by controlled air passing into and then out from under the diaphragms. This allows almost frictionless movement from A to B in a relatively short time. The tiny air gap between diaphragm and floor emits a controlled airflow, which is not fast enough to blow out a lighted match held close by. Two Airskate Hovair diaphragms are visible on the left, with the flat top steel load interface shown on the right, with optional

attachment tapped holes. The Yellow Hose Coil (20m or more) connects to the Pipe (silver) Manifold then to the Air Supply. The Manifold connects via green coiled tubing (4) to the Airskate Modules (4). The Manifold Inbuilt Control Valve is controlled by the Handheld Deadman (yellow tubing connections). The diaphragms when signalled from the Manual Deadman Control gently lift the load. Then it is just a matter of a slight push or pull and observation over or around the load for careful easy movement to the desired location, on a suitable horizontal surface. Ramps can also be negotiated.

The Deadman is there to stop the load in an emergency or it completes the job by gently depositing the load where required. To set up each Airskate Module is usually just matter of placing or sliding each skate under the load in an appropriate position. You then simply hook up the airlines to the designed Manifold Deadman Combo – and hey presto – most loads are ready to move. Adequate vision around the load and along the selected path ensures optimum safety. A supporting floor such as a steel trowelled factory floor is all that is needed

with sometimes a slip sheet of thin steel or lino if floor surface is below par. Timber and grid floors have also been negotiated with the Airskate Hovair. Sippel Group Ph: 02 9567 4889

GAME CHANGER: WILL DRONES TECHNOLOGY BE THE NEXT BIG THING IN MATERIALS HANDLING? Plant and warehouse managers may have to add “Air Traffic Controller” to their list of job duties in the near future. That’s because companies like Qimarox of the Netherlands continue to work up new ways to use drones in the material handling field. Qimarox, a leading manufacturer of components for material handling systems, has launched a study into the possibilities of using drones for product palletising. Manufacturers of consumer products can use these flying robots to design a very compact, flexible and scalable palletising process. Qimarox is continuing along the path embarked upon by mega online store Amazon.com and others. Amazon.com and parcel carriers UPS and DHL in the US have announced they would like to start using drones to distribute parcels to consumers. The drones could slash delivery costs for consumers who order goods online. There are already several videos on YouTube showing the first test flights of drones collecting packages in a distribution centre and flying them out towards residential areas. Qimarox specialises in the manufacture of, among other things, palletisers and vertical conveyors. It is constantly on the lookout for innovative concepts. The company believes drones may soon offer a cost-effective and scalable alternative to traditional palletizing methods. With little superstructure or extensive hardware to install, a drone-based palletizing solution could be deployed rapidly, and should be capable of a relatively high sustained load throughput. Although the current limitation on their usefulness is clearly the weight of the carried load, this is not seen as insurmountable in the medium term. And interest from companies like Amazon will continue to drive battery and control development. While, farmers in the US are already starting to use drones to do things like survey their fields, drones and quad copters are still trying to find their niche in industry. The big question is: Will drone technology be the next big thing in

manufacturing? And how can this innovative technology advance the manufacturing industry? After using drones for external logistics processes, the next step is to use them for internal logistics processes. According to Qimarox Operational Manager Jaco Hooijer: “Because of the limitations in terms of capacity and ergonomics, using people to stack goods on pallets is no longer an option for most manufacturers of Fast-Moving Consumer Goods. “Using drones, they can fully automate the palletising process, while retaining the much greater level of flexibility and scalability entailed by using real people.” The great thing about palletising with drones is that the process can be redesigned at any time without having to move or adjust any of your machines. All that is needed is to change the coordinates in the software that controls the drones. Another advantage is that capacity can easily be increased or decreased by simply switching more drones on or off. It is even possible to use a single drone to operate multiple end-of-line packaging lines. The biggest limitation is currently the weight that a drone can carry. Currently, drones are being tested that can lift products of up to 2.3kg. However, the technology is developing so rapidly that weights of up to 10kg should be possible within the foreseeable future. Qimarox doesn’t expect palletising systems using drones to be the ideal solution for every manufacturer of consumer products. But for small material handling jobs, this innovative, ultra-fast solution may hold the key to the future. www.qimarox.com

Catalog items may be designed to operate in any or all of the three product ranges, which greatly facilitates an efficient workflow. Emulate3D technology was designed to save time for companies wanting to produce high quality presentations of their automation solutions, perform accurate analyses of their operation, and create robust controls for their functioning systems. With Sim3D technology you can analyze system throughput, identify bottlenecks, dimension layouts accurately, and test out different operational modes to increase your understanding of how a system responds to changes. Bring “what if?” scenarios to life and compare results to select the best configuration and functional parameters for your requirements. Sim3D helps you to reduce the risk associated with your project decisions. Emulate3D allows you to test and develop your control system offline, without the constraints, dangers, or inconvenience associated with site work, and before the real system is even built. Emulate3D Controls Testing was the winner of the Queens Award for Enterprise – Innovation 2014 in recognition for the development and advancement of its “offline industrial controls testing” product. KONECRANES GIVES B&D DOORS A BOOST Konecranes, a world leader in cranes and lifting, has delivered a complete materials handling package to B&D Doors and Openers’ manufacturing facility in Sydney. The Konecranes team replaced 11 single girder cranes with more efficient, low maintenance and high safety types. Initially, Konecranes carried out Crane Reliability Survey (CRS) reports on the old cranes, which ranged from 2T to 6T. They then determined with B&D it would be more viable to supply 11 new cranes than to pay for maintenance and upkeep of the ageing cranes. “Of course price was a major factor in the decision to upgrade, says B&D Maintenance Supervisor, Brian Allen. “Konecranes gave us great value for money – but it was the professionalism, expertise and efficiency of the Konecranes staff that made us feel confident we’d made the right decision.” Established in Australia for over 50 years, B&D manufactures high quality commercial and residential garage doors at their facility at Revesby in Western Sydney. The company prides itself on engineering ingenuity and innovation and

invented the original roller door. B&D also place a high emphasis on efficiency, safety and standards compliance, for which Konecranes performed additional upgrades. These included modifying one existing crane from 2 to 3.2t to meet B&D’s requirements and upgrading four power supply systems to the Koneductor down shop power supply system, as the previous ones did not comply with the latest standards. Koneductor is Konecranes’ conductor bar system for crane power supply. It is a method of conducting electricity from the power grid to the crane. The absence of plug connectors provides an extremely smooth connection that minimises brush wear on the connector trolley. The system’s structure is very sustainable and safe, avoiding problems associated with added resistance at joints and increased voltage drop characteristics when joints loosen or corrode. “Konecranes was really good when it came to compliance, said Mr Allen. “They recommended inspections, surveys and upgrades without being too pushy about it. Since Konecranes was given the

service contract for the upkeep of our cranes about 12 months ago, we haven’t had any problems and I can be confident that everything meets the rigorous safety standards of the industry.” The Konecranes Group – which has more than 420,000 cranes of all makes under service contract worldwide – utilises RailQ and RopeQ surveys on crane componentry vital to reliability and safety. The technologies use laser alignment verification of the rails or runways on which overhead cranes must run smoothly and safely, and real time monitoring of the wire ropes vital to the safety and reliability of all lifting equipment. For B&D, Konecranes recommended a RailQ inspection on five crane runways,

which varied from being hook bolted to welded rail types. After this was carried out, Konecranes followed up with the repairs and modifications required to have the rails comply with the latest standards. All of the upgrades, and the installation of the 11 new cranes, were undertaken according to an agreed program that provided the minimum downtime and disruption for B&D. The success of the operation has also involved Konecranes obtaining the maintenance agreement for the ongoing service of the cranes. Konecranes Ph: 1300 937637 www.konecranes.com.au

QUALITY MACHINE COMPONENTS CUT RISK OF SYSTEMS FAILURE To meet the need for high quality component parts for a wide range of industries, an established Australian conveyor component manufacturing company has entered into a partnership with the highly regarded German conveyor component manufacturer MarxRollentechnik GmbH. Now the recently launched MRT Australia has introduced a comprehensive new range of conveyor component parts and roller assemblies, which are targeted at those companies seeking quality and reliability. Sydney based MRT’s key service proposition is to address the day to day needs of Australian industry by bringing together German design expertise and Australian product engineering ingenuity. According to company director and joint founder of MRT Australia, Paul Johnson, the company only focuses on supplying machine components of the highest standard. This range of products includes roller assemblies and replacement parts for machine and conveyor manufacturers, as well as service providers. Part of the service provided is also assisting in the sourcing of unusual components for imported machinery or hard to get items requested by design engineers. “If you’re an engineer whose responsibility it is to ensure the production plant remains

operational, or if you build conveyors and machinery, you only want to offer reliable components to your customers, said Johnson. “Not having the right components or running out of replacement parts can turn into a nightmare. “Further, if you are unable to quickly source a reliable local supplier the consequences of the resulting downtime can mean a very expensive drop in production throughput.” Of course if everything is running smoothly, it is easy to overlook the fact that all mechanical systems are composed of a complex interaction of sub-assemblies, all working together to keep things moving. If any one of those components become unserviceable, or reaches the end of its service life, taking risks with unreliable suppliers or poor quality components is a disaster waiting to happen. So whether it is in the maintenance of an automated warehouse relying heavily on a network of conveyors, or managing the day to day operations of a remotely located gold mine, having a systems failure back-up strategy is vital. Therefore, unless companies choose to hold a contingency stock of replacement parts, they must source a local supplier who can be trusted to provide quality components off the shelf in order to rapidly respond to an

unexpected systems failure. With a lifetime of experience in the manufacturing and commissioning of complex conveyor systems, Paul Johnson is aware that time is of the essence when it comes to providing his customers with conveyor components. He was, however, not always happy with alternative supplier’s response times or the standard of build quality of the parts supplied. “We came to learn that quantifiable performance characteristics, reliability and good quality components were fundamental to efficiency and the reputation of our product brand. The cheapest parts, often from dubious sources, were not reliable enough and had limited life expectancy which became economically counterproductive due to the increased frequency of replacing dysfunctional components.” Based on a basic expectation of design prerequisites which typify German engineering expertise, such as tighter tolerances, better quality material specifications and often with unique design features’, MRT Australia intend supplying and servicing its customers as the company’s business partners have for over the past 30 years. The new company will now enable engineers to buy direct from MRT, thereby

eliminating the middleman, which gives the company direct control over costs while at the same time giving its customers better value for money and direct access to its knowledge base. In the main, bearings, sprockets and drive assemblies are found to be the components most in demand. Because of the flexibility of MRT’s core range, management has the ability to mix and match different variations, which allow the company to build combinations that can run into the thousands. While off the shelf items can be supplied in a matter of 48 hours, urgent components can generally be shipped on the same day. “We’ve never had a failure with the German range of components”, says Johnson. “MRT Australia backs up its confidence in the long service life of its components by giving customers product performance guarantees unequalled by all other industry suppliers.” MRT Australia Pty Ltd Ph: 0419 803 619 www.MRTAustralia.com.au

ENERPAC MEGA GANTRIES RISE TO THE OCCASION Enerpac has introduced a new 5000kN hydraulic lifting gantry to deliver industrybest standards of safety and stability when lifting heavy loads to heights exceeding 12m. The MBL5000 lifting gantries – the latest product in the Enerpac Integrated Solutions’ portfolio – are engineered to operate in confined areas. They feature roller track self-propulsion

34

to reduce the footprint load of the gantry by more than 50 per cent compared with regular steel wheels. The new MBL5000s combine and extend upon product features that Enerpac introduced with the previous SBL series of gantry lifters. The SBL series is widely proven in lifting heavy plant, machinery and components in applications such as mining and energy

developments, oil and gas plants, bridges and civil engineering and ports and infrastructure. By designing the hydraulic system within the assembly, no trailing hydraulic hoses are exposed in the working area – only an electrical power connection is required. To ensure safety and provide certification, all MBL gantries are tested under the supervision of an independent

third party (Lloyd’s) at 120 percent secure workload, 2.5 percent side load and not more than 80 percent of the overturning moment will be allowed (110 percent, 1.5 percent and 90 percent respectively are allowed by the regulations). Enerpac Ph: 02 9743 8988 www.enerpac.com.au

HOW EUROCRANE CAN GIVE SMEs A LIFT For small to medium sized crane manufacturers, the process of quoting, provisioning and manufacturing cranes can be a difficult ant time consuming process. And for small to medium sized crane providers, the process of component selection and structural member sizing for new crane proposals has been a hit and miss affair. It takes years of industry exposure, trial and error and costly mistakes to be able to confidently select the ideal customer solution. In fact, the process can be so time consuming and frustrating that most sales people approach prospects with a degree of gut feel and optimism all the while hoping that the customer doesn’t ask too many technical questions about the proposal. Buyers are increasingly seeking out suppliers that can give them detailed product specifications and drawings of what’s being offered to them. A buyer can visualise what they are buying when they receive a drawing at the proposal stage. They are more likely to understand what is being offered to

them when they are presented with a detailed specification and generally more appreciative of the finished product when it’s supplied to them as they expected it to be. Unfortunately this isn’t an affordable luxury for the small to medium crane manufacturer to have at their disposal. To be competitive in the marketplace while producing a quality product takes a fair bit of innovation, careful product selection and reliable suppliers. Buying “one size fits all” end carriages and hoists from the typical channels does not give you a point of difference or an advantage over anyone. Making your own components or sub assemblies will help, but in most cases the effort in this outweighs the advantages. One thing that rings true for both of these scenarios is that your supply chain will be both long and fragile. In fact, no less than 15 different suppliers may be involved in one build! The effect of one delayed delivery could bring the job to a grinding halt. By law any new machine must be supplied with operator instructions and

maintenance manuals. Quite often the mechanical equipment that is purchased for the construction of a new crane doesn’t come with manuals, assembly instructions, electrical drawings, spare parts lists or operator instructions that could be considered adequate. As the supplier of the final product, the responsibility falls on you to supply all of this documentation to the end user. Buyers can save valuable time and money by dealing with experienced companies offering strong support services. Eurocrane Australia is the exclusive agent in Australia for the famous French brand of lifting equipment Verlinde. Eurocrane Australia are suppliers of industrial lifting equipment including Verlinde wire rope and electric chain hoists, belt hoists, light weight system cranes up to 2 tonne and crane kits up to 250 tonne capacity. HONEYWELL AND DEXION ADD SOME SPARKLE TO SCHWEPPES WAREHOUSE inefficiencies caused by an out-dated paper based picking system, Schweppes Australia decided to implement a fully integrated voice-operated system to deliver a comprehensive picking solution. Schweppes Australia’s National Logistics Execution Manager, Danny Murphy said the main goal was to build a fully integrated system that would eliminate the double handling of pallets and non-value add repetitive tasks. The company was also keen to provide its managers and supervisors with visibility in the workplace, thus creating a safer workplace for pickers. Schweppes Australia engaged Dexion to implement a multifunctional paperless solution that would control the physical and operational aspects of Archerfield’s distribution centre. Dexion partnered with world leader in voice enabled solutions, Vocollect by Honeywell, to deliver a paperless, efficient and accurate picking system. According to Dexion Australia’s Systems

Iconic brand Schweppes has been delivering premium quality non-alcoholic beverages to Australians for more than 150 years. Today, Schweppes Australia is a beverage powerhouse, boasting 1800 employees, 11 manufacturing sites and 12 distribution centres across the country. It manufactures some of Australia’s most loved and popular drinks including Schweppes, SOLO, Cottee’s, Spring Valley, Pepsi and Gatorade. Working closely with its customers, Schweppes Australia distributes and delivers beverage products to over 30,000 customers nationally. One of its largest distribution centres, the Archerfield site in Queensland services a large majority of the state’s market. Over 40 employees pick up to 16,000 cases daily, which are then delivered to more than 5,000 customers. Until recently, the site operated using a paper based picking system. The process of planning each load could take the picker up to 15 minutes. To combat the inaccuracies and

Sales Manager, Mike Dowd, the Dexion Real-time Distribution System (RDS) was used as the platform to facilitate process improvements and integration with the Schweppes ERP system SAP. “The RDS provides a flexible and cost effective solution to provide coal face functionality and practicality with minimal impact on the Host system,” said Dowd. A key consideration in rolling out the new solution was to establish how the pallets would be built according to order size. In contrast to the old model, in which all work was completed on paper with numerous SAP transactions, Dexion’s RDS provided a single real-time interface to Schweppes Australia’s existing systems, aggregating multiple features for the varying functions within the distribution centre. Dexion’s RDS has resolved the issue of product identification, previously a major challenge for the Archerfield warehouse. Under the paper-based system, pickers had to identify 400 different products in the warehouse – some of which have markedly

similar packaging, such as Pepsi and Pepsi Max. Under the new automated voice solution, a picker is provided with a pallet label. They are then directed to the correct picking location via the new Vocollect SRX2 Wireless Headset. The location is confirmed by the use of a check digit upon arrival – removing any manual direction or confusion about location. The voice system advises the picker how many cartons they need to pick and the picker repeats the quantity back to the system. Given the success of Archerfield, Schweppes Australia’s General Manager of Logistics and Customer Service Operations, Ian Gatenby, has plans to roll out the new technology nationally. Some manufacturers may be exploiting the term “Australian Made”, an industry leader claims. Mr Michael Pawson, managing director of ReCoila, a leading hose and cable reel company, says industry needs to learn more about the term Australian-Made. “The importance in supporting Australian-Made can never be understated, yet the term itself may need some closer investigation,” he says. Mr Pawson says his company, which supplies products locally and overseas, constantly battles fierce competition from imported products, many of which are inferior to locally manufactured items. “Companies in Australia only have to show 50 percent local content to qualify as ‘Australian-Made’, but it is at this point that term becomes muddied, he says. “The term ‘Australian-Made’ has some hidden realities that aren’t properly understood or they are open to exploitation.” Mr Pawson says the 50 percent component allows some companies to claim items such as tools used in assembly and cardboard packaging and overhead expenses within the framework of the definition. “So this is where the process is, in a way, being abused. “But this near-spurious 50 percent component regularly qualifies so-called ‘Australian-Made’ equipment that is then being purchased and used within many sectors of Australian industry without the consumer realising. “With the overall local component of manufacture effectively disguised, end-users are exposed to potentially inferior products on the belief they are in fact quality locally made product.” This can lead to unexpected maintenance costs, warranty costs and failure costs as well as “other headaches.” Mr Pawson says education should be encouraged about the true stipulations of Australian-Made and how it is potentially open to various degrees of exploitation. “Local industry should buy local product, he says. “It is our obligation for the future success of local industry, local employment and technological advancement in the global market. Those supporting this ethical approach to succession should have faith that when purchasing Australian Made it truly is Australian Made and the buck stops here.” Australian Made Campaign Chief Executive Ian Harrison says the green-and-gold Australian Made kangaroo logo is Australia’s registered certification trademark for country-of-

Mr Harrison said the specifications for making a countryof-origin claim on a manufactured product in Australia differs by product category. “But two rules remain constant – it must be substantially transformed in Australia and 50% or more of the cost of production must be incurred in Australia as well, he said. “While goods may contain some imported components, they must have been manufactured or processed in Australia – not simply packaged or assembled – and a significant proportion of the cost of making the product must be incurred in Australia too.” As a certification trademark, the Australian Made logo is governed by a Code of Practice, which sets out the guidelines for its use. Companies must agree to comply with the Code of Practice in order to be issued with a license, and each year the product’s licence must be reviewed and approved. The Australian Made Campaign also engages in random audits annually, and all complaints are investigated. If necessary, a company using the logo unlawfully will be taken to court. Fines for misuse of country-of-origin claims can exceed hundreds of thousands of dollars. To learn more visit: www.australianmade.com.au

AUSTRALIAN MADE CAMPAIGN APPOINTS NEW CHAIRMAN Mr Glenn Cooper, the executive chairman of Coopers Brewery Ltd, has been appointed as the new Chairman of Australian Made Campaign Ltd. The Australian Made Campaign is the not-for-profit organisation that administers the famous green-and-gold Australian Made, Australian Grown (AMAG) logo.

The organisation is directed by a national board consisting of 10 directors who in turn are elected by the Australian Business community from the Australian Chamber of Commerce Network and the National Farmers’ Federation. Allyn Beard, Marketing Director of Sydney based mattress manufacturer A.H. Beard, was elected as Deputy Chairman, and Neil Summerson, who recently completed a five year term as Chairman of the Bank of Queensland, was re-elected as treasurer. “Australian Made welcomes Mr Cooper to the position and we look forward to his leadership in directing this very important campaign to help businesses promote their genuine Aussie products both locally and internationally,” said Australian Made Campaign’s Chief Executive, Ian Harrison. Mr Cooper has served on the Australian Made Campaign Board of Directors for seven years and has a wealth of experience in a range of positions, including as the former Chairman of the Adelaide Fringe and

Adelaide Convention and Tourism Authority, as well as a former member of the Australian Logistics Council. “I am very passionate about local manufacturing and look forward to working with my Board colleagues and the team at AMCL over the next few years to lift the profile of this important campaign even further,” Mr Cooper said following his election. “The famous Aussie Made logo is a very valuable tool for Australian consumers and businesses – our job is to spread that message.” Mr Cooper said the Campaign owed an enormous debt of gratitude to David for his four years as Chairman and even longer term as Deputy. “It is not easy being chair of a national board out of Perth, where travel alone takes up so much time, but David did this with boundless commitment and enthusiasm,” Mr Cooper said. “He was a great Chairman and ambassador for the Australian Made logo and therefore all the products carrying it,” Mr Cooper said.

The AMAG Board of Directors now comprises: • Glenn Cooper AM (Chairman), Executive Chairman, Coopers Brewery Ltd (Adelaide) • Allyn Beard (Deputy Chairman), MD, A.H. Beard Pty Ltd (Sydney) • Neil Summerson FCA (Treasurer), Director and Former Chairman, Bank of Queensland (Brisbane) • Peter Anderson, CEO, Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) (Canberra) • Nicki Anderson, MD, Demo Plus (Melbourne) • Alf Cristaudo, Former Chairman of Canegrowers Australia (Townsville) • Robert Gerard AO, Executive Chairman, Gerard Corporation Pty Ltd (Adelaide) • David Gray AM (Chairman), MD, David Gray & Co. Pty Ltd (Perth) • Robert Hutchinson, State Manager, Queensland, ParexDavco (Australia) Pty Ltd (Brisbane) • Michele Levine, CEO, Roy Morgan Research (Melbourne)

INDUSTRY URGED TO ‘GET THE AUSTRALIAN ADVANTAGE’

The Australian Made campaign has launched a new initiative to promote country-of-origin branding as a vital part of every Australian business “tool kit.” The national campaign, to run throughout June, will call on businesses to Get The Australian Advantage and leverage shoppers’ preferences for buying Australian products. Australian Made Campaign chief executive, Ian Harrison, said while many businesses were suffering under fierce competition from cheap imports, those making and growing genuine Aussie products had a card up their sleeve that could help them get ahead.

“Research shows that country-of-origin branding has a direct impact on purchasing behaviours, in Australia and overseas – and our reputation for making and growing products and produce is strong on both fronts, Mr Harrison said. “The Australian Made, Australian Grown logo is by far the most recognised and trusted country-of-origin symbol for Australia. “So we are encouraging businesses to use the logo in their marketing efforts, providing of course that their products are eligible.” Mr Harrison said country-of-origin branding could reinforce corporate philosophies – boosting staff morale and

demonstrating corporate social responsibility – and open up new business opportunities when tendering for government contracts and major projects. “The power of country-of-origin branding should not be overlooked,” he said. Mr Harrison said the Australian Made, Australian Grown logo is effective in making the important connection with quality Australian products. “It is inexpensive, and it is a great asset available to our farmers, processors and manufacturers. We are urging businesses to ‘Get the Australian Advantage’ by leveraging this powerful marketing tool.” To find out whether your products

A new clean energy system has been developed to deliver cost savings in electricity generation for remote mining and industrial sites and rural communities. The new system, which is designed to produce electricity and heat for onsite use, is a collaboration between Granite Power Limited, the University of Newcastle (UON), Newcastle Innovation, the Newcastle Institute for Energy and Resources (NIER) and the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA). The new technology was demonstrated at Wallsend Swimming Centre, near Newcastle. The GRANEX demonstration plant comprises a 200-kW field of parabolic solar collectors plus related power block and thermal storage elements at The City of Newcastle's Wallsend Swimming Centre. Invented by Professor Behdad Moghtaderi and Dr Elham Doroodchi (UON) and developed by Granite Power, GRANEX is a heat conversion technology that generates low cost, zero carbon emission electricity from any available heat sources, such as industrial waste heat, solar and geothermal energy sources. Professor Moghtaderi said the project provides a working proof that this breakthrough technology generates electricity for commercial use or sale into the Grid, improves productivity and quickly pays for itself. "This project demonstrates the financial

Innovative … Professor Behdad Moghtaderi and Dr Elham Doroodchi rewards of the GRANEX technology in a market searching for productivity gains and where rising electricity costs are a constant threat to commercial competiveness, he said. "GRANEX has the potential to reduce fuel use for remote industrial sites currently reliant on diesel power generation including mining and the oil and gas sector and to maximise solar thermal power generation. "Alongside the tangible cost saving benefit to industry, this technology will have widespread social impacts in reducing the need for diesel generation in remote Australian communities." Managing Director and CEO of Granite Power, Stephen de Belle said the operating plant is working proof of the efficiency and financial benefits of GRANEX technology at low marginal cost and requiring minimum maintenance. "The plant shows the higher efficiencies of GRANEX technology as well as its wide

NEW NILFISK SWEEPER TOUGH ON DEBRIS, GENTLE ON ENVIRONMENT Nilfisk’s new SW4000 ride-on sweeper ticks all the right boxes. It is designed for maximum performance, reliability, improved ergonomics, minimum environmental impact and low total costs of ownership. The SW4000 is ideal for indoor and outdoor use in industry and manufacturing, warehouses, distribution centres, schools, shopping malls, parking areas, sport centres, recycling facilities and multi-storey car parks. One Touch Sweeping is one of the key features making it easy, economically and safe to operate. With this cleaning system, all functions – main broom, side brooms, vacuum fan and the optional DustGuard – are activated and terminated simultaneously so that no brooms or fans are running needlessly, when the sweeper stands still. The side brooms have no belts that can

break or need change, thus reducing wear and costs of ownership. And with minimized energy consumption, recyclable materials, dust control and low noise level, the SW4000 is gentle to the environment. The retractable, spring loaded side brooms, spring away on impacts, which means that they do not break or damage inventory when touched. The optional DustGuard misting system adds to the dust free sweeping improving the environment for operator as well as the surroundings. The high hydraulic dump ensures safe handling and fast dumping increasing the high productivity level and reliability of SW4000. Maintenance is easy as no tools are needed for broom and filter removal. The SW4000 provides easy access to

application to energy sources – solar, waste heat or a hybrid mix of the two – for low cost, zero carbon electricity generation. "Its existence is already facilitating sales into export markets in Asia, Latin America and the USA, and well illustrates the importance of direct funding of reference sites for the process of commercialisation of improved technology," Mr de Belle said. What began as a small-scale consultancy project by Professor Moghtaderi for Granite Power through Newcastle Innovation (the UON's commercial arm), GRANEX is now a commercially licensed, patented technology with wide application and huge potential. "GRANEX is a great demonstration of how through a strategic commercialisation process, scientific lab-developed concepts can transform into innovative solutions to industry challenges," Acting CEO of Newcastle Innovation, Chris Kelleher, said.

Environmentally friendly … the Nilfisk SW4000 ride-on sweeper all components, making maintenance and service fast and uncomplicated. The foamfilled wheels do not go flat or need refills, but add to reliability and comfort. The retractable hopper can be closed from the operator compartment allowing the operator to drive away immediately after dumping into a container. The comfortable compartment is easy to access, has adjustable seat and provides an unobstructed view of the brooms and working area. The power source for the Nilfisk machine is battery, LPG or petrol (only outdoors). The maximum sweeping path with two side brooms is 1250 mm allowing a capacity of 8750 m2/h. NEW TECHNOLOGY GIVES BUSINESS A CUTTING EDGE Sydney-based 600 Machine Tools, a leading supplier of state-of-the-art machine tools, acknowledge that manufacturers throughout Australia must harness the best of the latest technologies to stay competitive – domestically and internationally. When a group of rival workshops are vying for a major contract, the firm most likely to get the order is the one with the most upto-date portfolio of machinery. The reason is simple: the client wants the job started quickly, on machines with optimum accuracy and reliability, with early delivery of in-spec batches, and rapid completion of the order. Any one of these elements is commendable, but it is the integration of all of them that produces the desired results. Such exemplary service cannot be achieved by machines that arrived in Australia while Bob Hawke was the PM, or by using technology that was introduced about the time that Dawn Frazer won an Olympic Gold. That’s why the team at 600 Machine Tools and its network in Australia’s major industrial centres is continually seeking updates on the capabilities of the latest machines. The expert team can show clients how state-of-the-art technology can be deployed to gain a competitive advantage. This was one of the principal reasons

High tech … the Electrox application Laser Laboratory

why two of the company’s senior engineers – Peter Griffiths of Queensland and Pat O’Doherty of NSW – have just returned from England – home of the world-renowned 600 Group – after completing two rigorous training courses. The duo went first to Hertfordshire to see the new range of laser-marking workstations by Electrox – a 600 Group subsidiary – recently exhibited with great success at the biennial machine tool exhibition, MACH 2014, at the vast NEC in Birmingham. “The new family of laser markers offers significant benefits, not least of which is eliminating consumables, said Mr Griffiths. “Such operating costs as purchasing replacement lamps and filters are a thing of the past, right across the new range – from the entry-level EMS 100, through the selfcontained EMS 200 with integrated laser and wrap-around door, to the large enclosure EMS 300 for more complex applications.” The Electrox design team have studied the needs of end-users, and increased the capability of the new family, but not only in speed and accuracy. These machines have traditionally been used exclusively for engraving, but further refinement of the laser’s already exceptional performance means that these workstations can now cut, too. Mr O’Doherty added: “Australia’s industrial companies are now able to permanently mark their products, and eliminate the possibility of a decal or label fading or falling-off and irritating their global customers. “Another thing we saw in the manufacturing plan in Letchworth, Hertfordshire is the substantial increase in output of Electrox systems, meaning that customers in Australia now have much shorter lead times for the latest laser-marking technology.” Heading north, the second stop for the duo was Heckmondwike in Yorkshire to visit the head office of 600 Lathes, home

Quality and reliability … Pat O’Doherty (left) and Peter Griffith with the new Colchester Tornado EL lathe

of the Colchester and Harrison lathes that have been the cornerstone of workshops throughout the world for more than a century. “After a factory tour of the fullyrefurbished facility, which has created a new beginning for one of the oldest machine tool builders in the world, we were introduced to the new Tornado EL series of CNC lathes which is built on site, said Mr O’Doherty. “The Tornado EL is a typical Colchester product, with quality and reliability stamped all over it. The new series is a CNC lathe that is competitively-priced for the Australian market. The visit focused on developing product knowledge and servicing skills, and was very informative.” The requirement of end-users for turning and mill-turning with speed and accuracy influenced the design of the newcomers. The four machines in the series can have full C axis interpolation, spindle disc-brake, and driven tooling, making such tasks as radial and axial milling, drilling, boring, and tapping easier than they’ve ever been before. Mr O’Doherty noted that even the smallest member of the family, the two-axis Tornado T2, was very capable. It has a swingover bed of 440mm, giving an improved maximum turned length of 420mm and max turned diameter of 215mm. The T2’s bar capacity is 46mm. “A massive 60° slant-bed and an unstressed, fabricated and ballasted plinth

ensure unrivalled levels of strength and vibration-damping in a lathe 20 percent heavier than comparable machines, Mr O’Doherty added. The genial managing director of 600 Machine Tools, Cliff Purser, said the handson knowledge gathered by 600 engineers on such visits to OEMs is passed-on to workshop managers and skilled tradesmen all over Australia. “Irrespective of whether a workshop services ‘big stuff’ for the mining, construction, and earthmoving industries, or produces tiny components for the electronics or aviation industries, the Electrox and Tornado machines are designed to enhance the competitiveness of their users.” In his view, the four factors of capability, capacity, accuracy, and speed – in combination – give factories and workshops an edge while retaining existing customers and, importantly, when responding to enquiries from prospective new ones. “Peter and Pat have returned to Australia now, having completed intensive courses that have advanced their product knowledge and its deployment in Australia’s industrial scene – which, I might add, is visibly returning to robust health,” Mr Purser said. 600 Machine Tools Ph: 02 9674 4738 www.600machinery.com.au

WHERE TO FIND COST EFFECTIVE METAL PRESSING SERVICES Is it more cost-effective long term to obtain pressed metal parts and components in Australia or from off shore? One of Australia’s leading Metal Pressing companies, Swift Metal Services advises local manufacturers to explore all avenues in Australia before taking manufacturing of products or parts offshore. Short to medium runs of metal components, pressed steel parts and stamped componentry, can be produced in Australia on automated machinery for similar nett costs, with greater accuracy, consistent quality and vastly shorter lead times, than some imported components. Australian and New Zealand manufacturers need to consider the complete cost cycle when using imported parts. Hidden costs that may not be considered include, exchange rate fluctuations, international payment charges, freight including road freight from wharf to customer, import duties, customs clearance charges, additional warehousing expenses and increased inventory required to ensure imported parts on inevitable long lead times

do not adversely impact production. Then there is the problem if the parts arrive faulty. Many companies that have trialed importing components from countries with lower labour costs than Australia have had the inevitable batch of faulty parts – typically after 2 or 3 shipments of good components. Established Australian manufacturers such as Swift Metal Services, provide a 3-way guarantee called DIFOTIS – Delivered In Full On Time In Specification. THE MITSUBISHI CUTS EVERYTHING, EVEN YOUR COSTS.

NOW THAT’S APPLIED THINKING.

WANT LONGER TOOL LIFE AND FASTER PRODUCTION? Because of its high strength-to-weight ratio, titanium remains in high demand for precision components such as turbine blades in aircraft engines and power plants and frame components in aircraft structures and race cars. Shops know machining titanium and other high-strength/high-temperature alloys is a significant challenge, unlike milling steels or aluminium. With about 25 percent longer tool life, the new KCSM30 milling grade from Kennametal directly reduces cost-per-part for shops working on titanium. With a fine-grained carbide substrate for strength and stability together with a TiAlN

Longer tool life … the new KCSM30 milling grade from Kennametal

PVD coating for excellent wear resistance, not only are tools lasting longer, shops are also able to increase cutting speeds, up to 230 sfm (70m/min). Due to titanium’s high strength, thermal management is extremely important in managing and prolonging tool life. KCSM30 is also available in Kennametal’s proprietary Beyond Blast composition, where integral coolant channels deliver coolant through the insert precisely to the cutting edge under the chip, where it does the most good reducing heat and friction while increasing productivity. Also, coolant is only delivered in the insert quadrant that is doing the actual cutting, allowing the inserts remain indexable for maximum use. Demand for higher-strength, higherperformance components in the world’s critical industries (aerospace, energy, automotive, medical, and others) will only continue to expand, along with the pressures on manufacturers to increase quality and reduce costs. KCSM30 from Kennametal is available in face milling, copy milling, and shoulder milling platforms. www.kennametal.com

SLASH RUNNING COSTS WITH MITSUBISHI LASERS Applied Machinery, one of the oldest and most respected dealers of new and used machinery in Australia, has been appointed the Australian distributor for Mitsubishi Laser and their new range of cross-flow laser cutters. Mitsubishi Electric has been a leading developer and supplier of laser cutting machines to the global sheet metal processing market for over 30 years. The company enjoys a global market share in excess of 15 percent, with over 10,000 laser processing systems sold

worldwide. Mitsubishi’s cross-flow resonator design is state-of-the-art technology in laser cutting machines. The new range offers outstanding features and benefits, including substantial savings on running and maintenance costs. The cross-flow low velocity design leads to a decrease in the energy required to excite the laser gas. This means less gas consumption and lower power usage. And no turbine is required. Also, the larger cavity size results in

more gas being available at any one time, therefore less gas is required to be blown throughout the system by the fans. Power consumption during standby is drastically reduced along with reduction of electricity consumption provided by juston-time discharge. As a result of this technology, an extremely efficient 3L/h laser gas usage is achievable, along with a 90 percent energy saving in standby mode. Operators can also expect a 30 percent reduction in CO2 emissions compared to a traditional laser with axial flow resonator, thereby assisting companies endeavouring to reduce their overall carbon footprint. And with no glassware and a greatly reduced number of o-rings, maintenance is further reduced leading to more up-time and greater productivity. Other benefits of the cross-flow technology include an increased stability of beam mode due to the slow gas flow. The machines also provide unprecedented accuracy with thin, medium and thick workpieces in a wide range of materials.

30/08/2011 5:25:30 PM

This is particularly noticeable, for example, in the roundness of corners, eliminating the need for any postprocessing. Mitsubishi Electric’s Brilliantcut technology delivers surface finishes and quality previously only associated with grinding processes. “Whilst these remarkable machines can cut practically all metals, we must also remember that they have a wide range of applications in other areas including plastics and composite material processing,” said Applied Machinery Sales Director, John Goodrich. An extensive range of eX series machines is available from 2.7kW through to 6.0kW laser power, with sheet capacities ranging from 2400mm x 1200mm, through to 6000mm x 3000mm. Applied Machinery will also offer a premium2.5kW Mitsubishi Fiber Laser – the ML-3015 NX-F. Applied Machinery Australia Pty Ltd 03 9706 8066 www.appliedmachinery.com.au

IT’S CURTAINS FOR HARMFUL DECIBEL LEVELS

SIN441–Clear tubes ad 74x155.indd 1

7/11/11 12:06 PM

Every year noise costs Australian industry millions of dollars in employee stress and downtime. Also, many businesses face costly legal claims and litigation for failing to comply with government legislation regarding hearing protection for workers. Noise not only can damage hearing, it creates danger if workers are unable to communicate or hear machinery or warning signals. It is paramount for employers to protect their workers

56

industryupdate.com.au

from harmful workplace noise. A person without hearing protectors can be safely exposed to 85dB of noise for eight hours (similar to the sound of a front-end loader). But by increasing noise levels by a mere 3dB (85 to 88dB), it cuts that time to only four hours. And by increasing it again by a further 3dB (eg a lawn mower), an unprotected worker is at risk of hearing damage after just two hours. Flexshield is a leading manufacturer, supplier and installer of noise control and soundproofing products. This includes: • Flexible acoustic curtains and machine enclosures • Acoustic walls and barriers • Attenuators • Baffle silencers

• Modular acoustic panels • Flexible noise control barriers All Flexshield products are designed to reduce or completely subdue potentially harmful noise – and to comply with Government and workplace safety laws. High quality Flexshield products can be supplied quickly in kit-form and are easy to install. Flexshield can design and install a customised, effective solution that will reduce or completely eliminate the offending noise. Contact Flexshield for a free no-obligation on-site decibel consultation. Flexshield Ph: 1300 799 969 www.flexshield.com.au

World’s first lithium battery powered MMA welder AccuPocket from Fronius is the world’s first MMA welding system with a highperforming lithium-ion rechargeable battery and a low overall weight. Released in Australia by distributors SMENCO, the new technology gives users unprecedented freedom of movement in manual electrode and TIG welding. AccuPocket is the first welding power-source manufacturer to tap the concentrated power of lithium-ion technology for use in welding equipment. Until now, remote repair-welding in mountainous regions, field erection jobs in the country or welding work at exposed locations involved costly and timeconsuming preparations. But long mains supply leads or big, heavy 8 kVA generators are now no longer

necessary. And mains power is no longer required nearby. Now jobs needing up to six 3.25 mm electrodes or up to 18 X 2.5 mm electrodes can be welded autonomously. For more substantial welding applications, a small, compact 2 kVA generator is sufficient to provide unlimited welding power or reduction in arc quality. Thanks to AccuBoost Technology, AccuPocket welds extremely reliably and utilises its built-in power reserve to achieve perfect ignition and welding properties. Its advanced functional design – with very small dimensions, low weight and rugged build – makes AccuPocket ideal at any field worksite. AccuPocket has won two international awards for its new design, the prestigious

FLIR, a global leader in thermal imaging, has launched a new range of handheld thermography cameras to help streamline thermal inspections. The new T-Series cameras are ideal for intensive electrical, mechanical and utility predictive maintenance programs. The line-up includes the updated T420 and T440 with 320x240 thermal resolution, and the featurerich T620 and T640, both of which offer FLIR’s best handheld thermal detector resolution at 640x480 (307,200) pixels. Every model includes FLIR’s patented MSX, enhancement that highlights thermal images with key visible details in real time for easier recognition. Flexible ergonomics, fast communication from the field and a holistic thermal imaging solution for greater workflow efficiency set these T-Series cameras apart.

A major advantage is FLIR’s unique rotating optical block that allows users to easily aim overhead, under equipment and from other tough angles while keeping the large LCD in comfortable view. And to help reduce fatigue, the new T-Series cameras include AutoOrientation which automatically keeps onscreen temperature measurement data upright for easier viewing whether the camera is framed for landscape or portrait imaging. FLIR has further simplified T-Series’ touchscreen tools, making it simple to access menus, add temperature measurement spot meters and area boxes, change colour palettes, set parameters, and switch imaging modes. Using the free FLIR Tools Mobile app, thermographers can import, analyse and share images and reports immediately directly from

the inspection site. In addition, the app can stream live video to nearby devices for safer monitoring. Wireless connectivity also extends to FLIR MeterLink test instruments that can send readings directly to T-Series cameras via Bluetooth, automatically embedding electrical load and other critical data into radiometric thermal images as they’re captured. NEW NEMA CABINET COOLERS RESIST HEAT AND DIRT EXAIR's new small NEMA 12 Cabinet Cooler Systems keep electrical enclosures cool with -7°C (20°F) air while resisting heat and dirty environments that could adversely affect the internal components. This durable cabinet cooler system provides a low cost, easy to install, maintenance free solution for enclosures in hot, remote and/or dirty environments. The cooling capacity of up to 275 Btu/ hr is ideal for small electrical enclosures with problematic overheating. Models with higher cooling capacities are available. EXAIR Cabinet Coolers circulate -7°C (20°F) air throughout the enclosure to prevent high temperature malfunctions. They mount through a standard electrical knockout while maintaining the NEMA 12, 4 or 4X rating of the enclosure. Cabinet Cooler Systems include an automatic drain filter separator to ensure no moisture passes to the inside of the electrical enclosure. An optional thermostat control minimises compressed air use and keeps the enclosure at ±1ºC of the setting.

HOT WATER CASCADE SYSTEM FOR STERILIZATION OF LIQUIDS A new hot water cascade system enables liquids in closed receptacles made of glass or other temperature-resistant materials (such as ampoules) to be sterilized quickly, reliably and gently. Developed by MMM Münchener Medizin Mechanik GmbH, the new system plays a major role in pharmaceutical/ biotechnology production. GEMÜ valves are used to regulate the filling of the sterilization chamber during the process. This is first filled up to a defined level with deionised sterilization water. This water then circulates through

a steam-heated heat exchanger and cascades over the item being sterilized at a continuously rising temperature of up to 121°C. In the subsequent cooling phase, the sterilization water flows through the now water-cooled heat exchanger and cools the item being sterilized down to a specific temperature. Pneumatically actuated GEMÜ 554 globe valves control the filling of the sterilization chamber with water and the way in which the heat exchanger is heated by steam and cooled using water.

By contrast, GEMÜ 490 butterfly valves are used in the circulation line, as these have significantly more compact installation dimensions yet very high flow rates in comparison with pneumatically operated angle seat globe valves of the same nominal diameter. Further, to meet these stringent requirements, they are fitted with highly resistant TFM plastic and FDA-approved silicone as a sealing material. GEMÜ www.gemu-group.com

SNEAK PEEK AT EXAIR’S LATEST SUPER AIR NOZZLE EXAIR’s new PEEK 3/8” Super Air Nozzle has been engineered to produce the highest performance attainable. The protective aerodynamic slots guide the airflow to a single point of convergence for hard-hitting force and dramatic noise reduction over typical blowoffs. Its PEEK plastic construction provides non-marring protection to production items and excellent resistance to damage from harsh chemicals. And, it operates in temperatures up to 160°C (320°F). The PEEK Super Air Nozzle is suitable for blowoff, cooling

and drying applications located in general industrial or corrosive environments. The Model 1104-PEEK 3/8” Super Air Nozzle provides a strong blowing force. High amplification of airflow produces a blowing force of 850 grams (1.9 pounds), with air consumption of only 35 SCFM at 80 PSIG. Safe operation is assured since the airflow of the CE compliant Super Air Nozzle cannot be blocked, which meets OSHA dead-end pressure standard 29 CFR 1910.242(b). Sound level is very low at 82 dBA and meets OSHA noise requirement 29 CFR 1910.95(a).

Available from Compressed Air Australia, the 1104-PEEK Super Air Nozzle is designed to easily replace existing wasteful nozzles or open pipes. The 3/8” Super Air Nozzle is also available in Type 316 stainless steel and zinc aluminum alloy. Other PEEK thermoplastic air nozzles are available in M4x0.5, M5x0.5, M6x0.75, 1/8” and ¼” thread sizes. High performance … EXAIR’s new PEEK 3/8” Super Air Nozzle
