Mr Vains says workplace safety can be greatly improved with the use of sensors. “Through the introduction of sensors we see that machines can detect who is about to operate a machine and if they are not trained the machine will literally shut-down,” Mr Vains says. This sensor revolution extends to imbedded devices in clothing or uniforms. The sensors can communicate directly to machinery or vehicles so that clear safety

information is available to all workers, regardless of whether they are employed on a casual or full-time basis. “We see a future where there will be no need for a yellow line or barrier stopping workers from doing their work, Mr Vains says. “Sensors will detect if the employee is qualified to operate equipment – and if they are wearing safety goggles – an image will appear as a hologram to provide clear safety instructions.” Australian Industry Group (Ai Group) Director, Mark Goodsell applauds Siemens efforts in addressing industrial safety and says that Australia’s safety effort needs to lift to keep us inline with the best in the world. “Australia is still only ranked 7th in the world for workplace safety – we know that with all the resources and intelligent technology available that there is no reason why we can’t be number one,” says Mr Goodsell. continued page 2

Over the past 25 years Safetech has grown from one original product to a complete range of materials handling equipment. This includes hydraulic lift tables, goods lifts, pallet dispenser, pallet inverters, tilters and other levelling products. Safetech also manufactures stretch wrappers, lift trolleys and turntables. Safetech leads the way with large scissor tables and other materials handling equipment by being able to design and manufacture equipment to suit customer-specific applications. Recently, Safetech was selected as the preferred manufacturer to supply and install two large 25 tonne capacity scissor lift tables for lowering trucks, 11m underground to a basement loading bay. The scissor lift tables are designed to maximise space for a major Melbourne retailer. Safetech has added many large capacity custom scissor lift tables to its range over the years for specific projects.

New sensor technology set to revolutionise Australian workplaces

Workplace fatalities and a marked rise in industrial injuries is costing Australian companies over $57 billion a year in medical expenses, lost hours and compensation, according to a new safety research study. The Picture the Future 2030 Safety, released by technology leader Siemens, shows that workplace incidents equate to one death per working day – that is 280 deaths per year. Agriculture, construction, transport and logistics and manufacturing industries account for the majority of safety-related incidents in Australia. To reverse the alarming trend, safety education is vital – particularly with the current growth of casual labour in the workplace, says Chris Vains, Head of the Picture the Future 2030 Safety research. “With over 25 per cent of Australia’s workforce made up of part-time or casual workers, we need to step up the standard of safety education with continuous and on-the-spot training.”

It’s time again for reflection Wow. What another challenging year! For many Australian manufacturers 2011 has been a year of tough competition, cheap overseas imports, a skills shortage, the US and European financial woes and the rising Australian dollar, to name just a few. Whilst some sectors of industry have thrived others have suffered. Small businesses across the nation have been particularly hard hit by the constantly changing landscape. Adding to what at times seems like an overwhelming litany of impossible challenges, Australian businesses must now deal with ever-changing employment laws introduced by the Rudd/Gillard governments. One really does need a law degree or have a full time solicitor at hand to keep up to date with the current employment requirements and not fall off the pendulum that swings

so dramatically between the change of governments. As I have been out and about speaking with many of you, one of the overwhelming issues facing business is the difficulties they now face with new employment laws. While the laws are designed to protect the rights of the workers, they now offer employers little or no protection. As a result, many companies, particularly small and medium sized businesses, are now hesitant in taking on additional staff. This is adding further pressure to an industry already pressed to the limit. The new workplace reforms are also making us a less competitive nation. I spoke positively in my last column and gave full support to the government’s initiative to set up a special focus group aimed at assisting manufactures to get through the hard times

ahead. But the government must review its draconian employment legislation and provide more assistance to business in the management of workplace employment reforms. And they must act now! For those who have prospered, well done! For those doing it tough our thoughts are with you. As we now move into holiday mode and enjoy the Christmas and New Year celebrations, it is a great time to reflect and remember that although times are tough, overall we are a wealthy nation. We are in a great position to weather the storms we have been forced to endure. Let’s keep in mind that much of the world’s population is wondering where their next meal will come from. I encourage everyone to do something this year that you may not usually do. Make a donation or buy a food hamper and donate it to a charity.

If you can’t make a financial gift, volunteering is always an option and you will truly feel great. Remember, Christmas is all about ‘Christ’/mas. And whether you are a believer or not, whether you celebrate Christmas or not, you can still get involved. Doing good in our community will always leave positive footprints. Looking forward to a brighter year ahead The past year has been another tough one for Australian manufacturers. Local industry has been reeling from the impact of a robust Australian dollar, cheap overseas labour, cheap imports, chronic skills shortages and more recently the European debt crisis. This has put enormous pressure on many businesses to survive. The Federal Government decision to push ahead with a price on carbon has added to the pressure. While the resources industry is going gangbusters, the manufacturing sector has been up against the ropes. And while strong commodities prices are good news for our mining regions, for manufacturers they spell higher costs as the

price of raw materials soar. The mining boom has brought with it a mass exodus of factory workers – lured by bulging pay packets that can’t be matched. This has resulted in a severe shortage of skilled workers to take their place. Struggling Australian manufacturers are now being urged to be innovative and better tap into the resources boom. A number of new Government initiatives have been launched to help achieve this goal. For many manufacturers the downward spiral began in 2008 with the outbreak of the global financial crisis. As manufacturers began clawing their way back from the brink, they were hammered again by a steadily rising Australian dollar. Since the GFC the Aussie dollar has leapt

more than 40 per cent in value against its US counterpart, placing enormous pressure on manufacturers – particularly exporters. To add to industry woes, steelmakers BlueScope and OneSteel dropped a bombshell with the combined sacking of more than 2000 workers in the September quarter due to difficult trading conditions. The decision sent shockwaves through the manufacturing sector with union bosses warning this is “just the tip of the iceberg.” For many Australian manufacturers, it has become a desperate fight for survival. National Australia Bank chief economist Alan Oster said while he hoped the manufacturing sector would not contract any more, the responsibility was on manufacturers to change.

By Tim Michael editor@industryupdate.com.au

To survive they must be internationally competitive. They must adapt to changing times. But manufacturers are a resilient mob. They have shown in the past they can weather the most turbulent storms. In true Aussie spirit, manufacturers are refusing to go down the count. Many have been forced to completely revise their business operations, with more funds being invested in R&D and innovation. We look forward to a prosperous year ahead.

From front cover

“Injuries and fatal incidents in the workplace should be reduced in tandem with our efforts to address the marked decline in productivity we are facing across many industries in this country. By addressing safety in conjunction

with productivity, we can see both outcomes improved.” Siemens expects the advanced sensor technology identified in the research to be made available within the next decade.

SEW-Eurodrive thinks BIG for the future Leading global industrial drives manufacturer SEW-Eurodrive has acquired a new building to house their Industrial Gears (IG) division. Situated adjacent to their existing 27 and 29 Beverage drive headquarters, the new addition at 31-33 Beverage Drive, measuring 10,000 sqm, will be fitted out to produce and service the largest drives available in Australasia. The $10 million investment will be further complimented with a state of the art fit out including cranes capable of handling 50 tonne loads, automated two-pack paint line and storage capacity for in excess of 3000 pallets. “The company is very upbeat about the future and this investment will consolidate our future growth expected within the heavy industrial drive sector,” says SEW-Eurodrive Managing Director, Robert Merola. “Stocks will be increased therefore reducing time to market,” Mr Merola says. Reducing lead time by weeks or even

months now allows SEW-Eurodrive customers to become even more productive. “You can imagine two months production in a mine is a significant amount,” Mr Merola says. The philosophy of centralised assembly and decentralised service will be rolled out over the next 12 months.

“Our goal is to officially open the new complex in conjunction with the 30th anniversary next year,” Merola says. “We can celebrate two magnificent milestones in Australia.” SEW-Eurodrive Ph: 03 9933 1000 www.sew-eurodrive.com.au

Senator Kim Carr

Striving for excellence The decisions we make today will make the difference In 1949 Prime Minister Ben Chifley launched construction of the Snowy Mountain Scheme. He called it “the greatest single project in our history”. His message to the nation was simple. “What we want, perhaps more than anything else, is a spirit of faith in our nation, not only among our industrialists but also among the workers who will have to do the donkey work. With such a spirit to spur us on, and with unlimited opportunity, coupled with an economy, the soundness of which has never previously been equalled in our history, our future is assured.” That message brought more than 100,000 workers to the Snowies, from more than 30 nations. In 25 years, they accomplished one of the largest and most complex hydro-electric projects ever attempted – on time, and to budget. It remains one of the marvels of modern engineering. But they did not carve their legacy on the land alone. The true legacy of the Snowy generation was a new society – more skilled, more diverse and more confident

than ever before. It is not the fashion to speak of ambition today. But what do people see when they look at Australia? A $30 billion agreement to turn Olympic Dam into the world’s biggest mine. A broadband network that will make us the most connected continent on the planet. A carbon price and emissions trading plan, backed by more than $20 billion in measures to transform industry. A strong bid to host the Square Kilometre Array, a multi-billion dollar telescope network with a 5000km baseline. These projects are every bit the equal of the Snowy Mountain Scheme – in their ambition, their scale and their global appeal. Whether we like it or not, this country will be a very different place before the decade is through. The direction we take is up to us. We can be the back-room in our own transformation – shuffling the papers and out-sourcing the jobs. We can mandate local

content and shelter firms from the need to compete. Or we can build firms with the strength to endure when the projects that launched them are done. The decisions we make today will make the difference. That is why this Government has placed such emphasis on Australian Industry Participation Plans for the past four years. We respect our firms. Give them a fair go, and they should compete. If they aren’t up to the mark, that’s a problem we need to face. Just as we train our elite athletes, I say we can lift the performance of our firms. There are always disputes about the level of local content. There are always people who want to talk down Australians firms. But whatever the level, and whatever our strengths, we can do better. This was the clear message of the Jobs Forum in Canberra earlier this year, and it is the mission of the Manufacturing Taskforce the

By Senator Kim Carr Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research

Prime Minister will lead in the months ahead. We will not stand idle while that work proceeds. The Government announced last month that major federal grants of $20 million or more, including grants to the States and Territories, will be contingent on maximising opportunities for Australian businesses. We will also require future project developers to publish more details on opportunities for local firms if they want to receive tariff concessions under the Enhanced Project Bylaw Scheme (EPBS). They will detail the opportunities for Australian firms on a public website, and they will report regularly on the outcomes of their Australian Industry Participation Plans – or they will not feel the benefits of EPBS support. Every ambition has donkey work attached, as Chifley always acknowledged. If we will not shoulder it today, it will crush us tomorrow. The world sees the opportunities in our country – it’s time they saw the quality of our people.

Moving heavy loads safely By Jenn Schneider

Rubbermaid Commercial offers a wide range of materials handling solutions

You’re in the market for a material handling product, something that can help your employees move those loads quickly and safely. You surf the web and flip through catalogs, but how do you start to narrow your choices? The same way best-in-class manufacturers create innovative products—research, testing and knowledge. The R&D behind a material handling product starts in the field — it’s how engineers “get smart” about the consumer and an industry need. “It’s important first and foremost to research the end-users and gain knowledge into the marketplace you’re trying to penetrate. It’s about listening to the needs of your customer,” says Scott Singleton, Global Business Team Leader — Material Handling at Rubbermaid Commercial Products (RCP). “We go directly to our end-users and get their take on what would work for them and what wouldn’t. We listen, watch, ask, and

listen some more,” adds Singleton. “Once you know your customer, that’s when you’re in the position to identify any unmet needs that may affect productivity, efficiency and ease-of-use.” “Through our interviews and research, we recognized early-on that our expanded and redesigned heavy-duty material handling product line needed a handle that could significantly reduce the risk of fatigue and on-the-job injuries,” said Bob Tokash, Senior Product Engineer for Rubbermaid Commercial Products. “And that’s what led us to an integrated variable grip-height handle—it was designed to not only improve maneuverability, but to help reduce muscle strain regardless of your height; this is just one example of how product research can have an impact on worker safety.” “For our line of material handling solutions, we spent days at various home centers

investigating different ergonomic handle styles on lawn mowers, tilling machines and other types of pushing devices with handles,” said Tokash. “The result, a combination of different handle aspects were chosen and combined to establish the final handle designs for our trucks and carts.” According to Tokash, there was a laundry list of testing that ranged from not just weight load thresholds, but to examining several different sizes of power drills to establish a drill holder feature that would accommodate just about all drill sizes. Our research also led to obvious deficiencies among metal and wood material handling decks. “As a result, our Duramold decks were engineered for all of our heavy-duty trucks,” said Tokash. “Our Duramold decks are formed from a precision engineered resin and metal composite structure that is lighter then typical metal and wood products without sacrificing strength, allowing end users to put their effort into moving their payload not their truck.” “And from the maintenance side, our Duramold decks won’t warp, dent, splinter, rust or rot,” added Singleton. “And virtually maintenance-free, its resilient surface absorbs impact and is resistant to most chemicals, impervious to water damage and easily cleaned.” When it comes to testing material handling products, it’s all about being able to endure the harshest environments under heavy loads, and providing a product that’s rugged, durable and tested tough from static loads, fatigue, and

impact/drop tests to cycling/wear tests. Endless hours are spent testing various weight-loads on product, as well as caster performance in a variety of environments. Some manufacturers have been known to use more than 136,000kg of weight to test a product line. For instance, “threshold” testing (a test designed to simulate going over a threshold as you would move materials around a facility) for one product can take up to 10,000 cycles — that equates to 24km of actual distance on one unit. And partnerships are everything — know what you’re buying and from who. When looking to purchase material handling equipment, it’s always smart to go with an industry-leading manufacturer you can trust — one you can count on for breakthrough innovations and with a history of long-lasting products that can meet your most demanding needs. Those material handling manufacturers are the ones that have invested the time in research and testing to not just develop a product, but a set of solutions to help you succeed at your work and in your career. *Jenn Schneider is a member of the material handling marketing team at Rubbermaid Commercial Products, LLC.

Business, Finance, Legal & Marketing for Manufacturing

Surviving tough times It’s time to think outside the square Australia is lucky to enjoy abundant natural resources. This has meant we have been able to sustain standards of living that other economies cannot. However, the current resources wealth has identified issues of micro economic importance. Many manufactured items that are consumed in Australia, are made overseas. Increasingly, our ability and skills to make things is being eroded. This is due to a number or factors – like global sourcing and internationally competitive wage rates. Australia’s manufacturing sector has become less competitive as wages and costs have risen. Cheap power, abundant natural resources and a highly skilled workforce were contributors to Australia’s success in the past. Direct costs are rising. Indirect costs are rising. Government regulation is increasing. Market competition is strengthening. All these contribute to a less feasible business and industry model. Investment returns are being eroded. New investment is difficult to find. Although Australia continues to reap rewards from the mining and resources industries, our manufacturers and other high employment industries face more pressure. In addition, business and industry are facing a new environment in government activities. Some larger employers, industries and companies are being assisted to make adjustments. Small and medium sized businesses are confronted by costs and revenue pressures. Collectively, industry associations offer some assistance in lobbying, consulting and referral, especially in IR. Neither managing individual businesses nor altering the macroeconomic trading environment is within their realm of influence. Large and small business can act. What can you do? Businesses must address all areas of their activities, from operations to staffing and management. In good times, companies may not pay attention to detail. In tougher times, improvement can be critical. Marginal improvement may not be enough. Radical change may be save the business. From a management viewpoint and for proprietors, the best thing is to conduct or commission a professional, structured annual review of the business. Members of your company’s workforce also have a real interest in this, as they too are key stakeholders. Sales and Marketing Businesses operate to make money to pay tax, suppliers, staff, management and owners. Customers and what they purchase are the source of revenue. Critical evaluation of the sales and marketing activities of a business must address, among other things: Page 10

is assisting business. Environment and water, Consulting through Enterprise Connect, Commercialisation Australia for startups are just a few. Most crucial is the R&D tax concession/rebate program, especially as it has been refocused from 2011 with new legislation. Any company engaged in or potentially exporting should get a good plan before making a claim and before spending their valuable marketing dollars. The world is often overlooked as a key market, since it may all seems too hard, when sales are just around the corner. • Products • Market definition • Sales and promotional activities • Pricing • Competition • Distribution • Customer service. Product definition/development Is the business providing the right products and services? Is there value in the add? Can the product be improved – price, value, functionality, cost? Systems and procedures What are the systems and procedures? What are the resources used? What assets are employed? Are improvements in any or all of these possible for the business? Supply Who are suppliers? What do they provide? Who else can provide the same things? Is costing appropriate? Are appropriate contracts in place? All supply elements should be critically reviewed. Workforce Is the workforce properly skilled? Are people motivated and contributing? Do you have enough staff or too many? Can people be more productive? Do they need more support? The people in the business are often seen to be the biggest assets and yet there is a national culture of conflict. Ensuring that workforce members are part of the business and enjoy common goals is the best way to operate in a productive and harmonious work place. Conflict is not the standard to apply. Systems and processes All business activities should be operated in these terms – systems and processes, procedures, responsibilities and resources. Australia can improve all industry activities by continuing to develop and deploy smarter ways of doing things. Business must ensure that they have their intellectual property imbedded in their systems and processes. Otherwise it will walk out the door each

afternoon and may not return one day. Administration Is administration efficient and effective? Are all reports up-to date? Are accounting records properly maintained? Are purchases, sales, payments, receipts all properly managed? Are tax returns and activity statements filed and complete? If the administration is not up to speed, complete and accurate, it can cause major problems. Management Management must be competent. It must be efficient and effective. Skills appropriate to an industry must include general management, business process management, administration and finance, investor and government relations and media management. Management must include the whole business structure and organisation. Proper devolution of responsibilities and flatter structures tend to motivate but steeper models offer sometimes tighter control. All management functions and responsibilities must be reviewed and considered in terms of the overall business goals and objectives. Inefficient or excessive management tends to add considerable costs and diminishing returns. Business performance Business Performance must be considered. In terms of relative returns on investment, competitor analysis and continual improvement, each business should be critically evaluated. This, like all the other areas of review must be carried out on a regular basis. Monthly reporting is essential for proper business management. With today’s information systems, there should be no excuse for inadequate reporting. Business management and directors must have regular, documented meetings to ensure the business is continuing in the right direction. Each product, functional area and the performance overall must be subject to assessment. Government grants access If your business is not accessing government programs, there may be a good reason. However, there are many ways that government

Business model? As every business is different, there are many ways to operate. Business owners and managers must continually consider whether this is the right business model. Can things be outsourced? Can more be done in-house? Are we in fact, in the right business? Business funding Business funding often makes or breaks an enterprise. It is an area that is often neglected by business owners and managers. If there is inadequate funding, then costs and customer service may suffer. If the funding is all debt, it may be too expensive. If the working capital and assets secure the funding, is the cash flow hiccup likely to bring down the house of cards? Capital is often neglected or not even measured. It is an area where businesses often do not take advantage of their success. Grants and debt options must be evaluated within the mix. A critical review and restructure of funding will often allow a business to become more successful and secure. There are different levels of sophistication and methods or approaches to review and analysis of businesses. The questions raised here should help stimulate owners, managers and staff of businesses in manufacturing and other industries to seriously consider getting a critical appraisal of their operations, functions and overall business. EFIC DID MORE THAN FINANCE MY EXPORTS

THEY GOT BEHIND THEM. Bob Wright, Chief Executive Officer, Environmental Systems & Services

When we won a contract to install advanced satellite tracking ground stations with the Polar Research Institute of China, it should have been a dream come true. The complication was that as a new client, they wanted reassurance that we could fulfil the contract. With our reputation gaining momentum in the region this was a contract integral to our growth. We needed a solution that enabled us to support our ongoing business while pursuing overseas opportunities. EFIC provided more than just a financial solution, they took the time to get to know our business and considered

our performance risk as well as our experience in delivering on past projects. EFIC supported us with an advance payment bond as well as a performance and warranty bond, enabling us to reassure our buyer and successfully fulfil the contract. EFIC were focused on helping us realise our export ambitions. This deal transformed our business, and we’ve gone on to win multiple contracts in the region.

Lead generation: it can make you or break you As a B2B marketing consultancy, the most common thing we’re asked to look at is lead generation, which is how it should be because nothing happens without an enquiry for your product or service. The correct treatment of leads generates more sales and maximizes the effectiveness of your marketing spend. The first question we ask before we spend clients’ money is: “Do you have a sales problem or a marketing problem?” That is, are you in enough deals but have a poor conversion rate or do you have a satisfactory conversion rate but are not in enough deals? It still amazes us how many companies can’t answer this question. Without knowing this basic information we are working from a vague starting point and might be just throwing good money after bad. You might need sales training or a different sales manager rather than lead generation activities. The next major stumbling block is not knowing where your current leads come from. When a company understands exactly where it’s best sales leads come from, it can confidently make decisions about how and where to target it’s marketing spend. It can also accurately measure the impact and effectiveness of its marketing lead generation activities. Companies that get this right have a culture and discipline around lead generation and management, usually driven from the very top. I know of a former CEO of one of Australia’s

great capital equipment companies who was known to call his branches to test if the correct questions were asked when he made a hoax enquiry. If not, formal warnings were given, because he understood the value of knowing where his sales leads were coming from. Many companies with unreliable lead management processes want to blame the marketing activity for lack of sales, but sadly they have no idea what works and what doesn’t. Enquiries from websites can give the ultimate in lead generation intelligence. Through simple tools such as Google Analytics you know exactly which website the enquirer came from, words they used to start their search, where they went on your site and for how long. This information makes decisions around online expenditure simple. All companies use terms like “leads are gold” but most don’t treat them like something of value. It often amazes us how long a company can take just to make that initial contact with an enquirer. We run a call centre for our clients for the main purpose of generating leads. Our policy is to send the lead to the client within minutes of receiving it. We encourage clients to treat leads with the same urgency. I can’t think of a bigger waste of money and brand killer than a lead not being followed-up by a salesperson. The discipline required to ensure this never happens is another issue that needs to be driven from the very top. Every company should have a policy detailing expected sales lead follow-up times, follow-up actions and

By Karl Boothroyd

reporting requirements. This information must be regularly fed back to marketing managers and, ideally, the advertising agency, so the source and quality of sales leads can be analysed and assessed for future marketing spend decisions. It should be noted that when asking an enquirer about why they’ve called your company you need to be careful of misleading answers. For example, a TV or radio campaign might generate great interest but the source of the lead might be recorded as Yellow Pages or Internet if the correct questions aren’t asked. This is because many people don’t jump on the phone as soon as they see or hear an ad, but will later go to their preferred information source to gather more information and get your contact details. So in the case of the enquirer answering “Yellow Pages” to the question “How did you find out about our company/product?” you should then ask: “What prompted you to find us in the Yellow Pages?” The answer will probably be “I heard your ad on the radio.” Too much is also made of the percentage “response rate.” If you usually generate two leads a week and a new marketing activity doubles that, does it matter if the response rate was below one per cent? What’s more important is cost-per-lead, which has to be relative to your conversion rate and value of order. We’ve known of many companies over

Karl Boothroyd the years that would rather have their highly paid selling staff driving around to hopefully find a customer because they don’t want to spend money on marketing activities. It’s easy maths to show how costly that lead generation method is versus a well targeted, and managed, lead generation program that provides selling staff with an ongoing stream of quality, qualified sales leads. In summary: • The CEO needs to be passionate about sales leads • The company needs a culture of treating leads like gold • There needs to be a system and discipline in place to ensure accurate identification and reporting of lead sources • Cost-per-lead is more meaningful than response rates • Policies and management discipline are required to ensure the correct follow-up of leads • The company needs to ensure selling staff close the information loop by providing to marketing and then the agency, the resulting action from each and every lead. Enterprise Connect gets local business back on track

Tim Farrah (left) at the Milspec Manufacturing factory with owners Wendy and David Cooper

Many small and medium Australian businesses in the manufacturing industry have faced tough times over the last few years. The Australian Government is providing support through a range of connected programs to help businesses develop strong strategies to survive and thrive in a rapidly changing business environment. A prime example is family owned business Milspec Manufacturing Pty Ltd, located in Albury in southwest NSW. Milspec is a precision engineering company engaged in contract manufacturing of Page 12

industrial, commercial and military products. While owners Wendy and David Cooper knew their business had great potential, they were struggling to realise that potential. The firm had a solid customer base, good forward orders and a diverse manufacturing capacity that could support expansion into other markets. Despite this, the business was not producing profits in line with the level of investment and risk that David and Wendy had committed. The workforce was unhappy and they had a very high level of staff turnover. “It was hard going – the business was taking a lot out of us personally,” says Wendy. “We were stumbling along and we didn’t know what to do next,” she says. “We hadn’t really ever had a plan, but we knew that if we kept going, doing things as we were, we would fail.” Help came in the form of Enterprise Connect Business Adviser, Tim Farrah who took the time to understand the business, the issues and provide the advice Wendy, David and the Milspec management team needed. “Tim was very professional in his approach. He could see that we were struggling and he

did the best he could to send resources our way. He helped us crystallise our thoughts and set achieveable goals – he steered us in the right direction,” says Wendy. Tim explained that Milspec “lacked a solid business management structure and it was hampering the business’ ability to reduce costs and increase margins.” Tim connected Milspec with local government organisations and encouraged them to link into industry networks. He also encouraged Milspec to apply for a $20,000 Tailored Advisory Service grant so they could bring on a consultant to assist in creating and implementing a robust strategic plan. The plan has helped focus the business on profitable projects and markets, install effective administrative processes, improve communication between the sales and manufacturing teams, and position the business for growth into the future. Milspec also addressed inefficiencies by enrolling the entire workforce in a two year competitive manufacturing training program. The results were profound. Staff turnover reduced dramatically from 55 per cent to 1 per cent, and net losses turned into a solid gain.

Delivery performance also increased from 60 per cent to an impressive 95 per cent. Milspec now provide a full end to end service, offering clients a range of solutions, from the inception of an idea, welding and fabrication, research and development, prototyping, production support and post production analysis. To provide quality products to its customers, Milspec have incorporated Lean manufacturing principles such as 5S, Visualisation and Flow and have made significant improvements in production efficiency such as reducing lead time from 26 weeks to seven weeks for the rifle range. Milspec also work on exciting niche projects like The Nulka Missile Decoy Project, reconditioning old canisters used to fire decoy missiles. They are now exporting various products into the US, New Zealand, South East Asia and Europe. With the right support, advice and a willingness to change, Milspec have gone from strength to strength and they don’t look like slowing down any time soon. How to deliver customer service – and cut costs Genchi Genbutsu (Go to the Source). When it comes to the nuances of transport, getting out to the warehouse or contacting customer service staff and speaking with the people that deal with carriers on a daily basis can open up a wealth of knowledge. This knowledge can sometimes be the difference in being able to truly interpret the requirements or making significant errors if a sourcing event is conducted without a clear specification. 3. Transport task segmentation – to understand and to align requirements to capability:

Logiworx Operations Director David Irvine explains how to maintain high levels of service in transportation and still meet vital cost saving goals ...

The Australian transport industry boasts 40,000 businesses, employing more than 100,000 people. In the past 12 months this vital industry, which generates $36 billion a year in revenue, has experienced some difficult times. With a downturn in general freight, consolidation within the industry players, increases in key cost drivers, as well as the continuing cost of compliance, transport vendors have struggled to survive. The industry has also felt huge pressure from customers desperate to cut costs by aggressively going to market in procurement driven tenders. Hard rates-based negotiations have sliced deeper into diminishing profit margins – particularly in the wake of the Global Financial Crisis. As a result, transport companies are now challenged to maintain the basic standard of service consistently. So how does an organisation ensure high levels of service to customers, meet corporate cost saving goals and manage the risk associated with chain of responsibility and compliance? In this article I have outlined four practical and operationally focused steps to ensure transport can be understood and options identified before going to market: 1. Understand the spend and very importantly who is in control of the spend: • This task is often easier said than done and on occasion requires similar skills to that of a forensic accountant! There are plenty of fantastic spend classification tools available if the spend is complicated with multiple systems,

Page 14

industryupdate.com.au

divisions, languages, locations and vendors. However, the starting point objective is to simply identify and classify the vendors that relate to transport spend. You must then determine who is currently in control and if the spend is under contract or not. • A simple starting point is to follow the financial classification trail and to request the general ledger view of all transport and logistics related vendors, as well as any specific site entities and profit and loss reports that usually classify spend as well. This does not always mean it is entirely correct yet it can be a very good place to start. • Once this is completed it is extremely important to understand who controls this spend. Again a starting point can be to identify how and who signs off invoices at the end of the month. 2. Understand cost, service and value drivers – identify the key carriers and determine what services are required or provided: • Location is one of the key carriers that must be determined and information needs to be gained to profile and analyse the transactional consignment level required. Another must do principle is to study the details in the freight companies invoices. Freight invoices can give an insight into the entire business operation. If interpreted correctly, they can paint a picture of customers, order profiles, service requirements and how this translates to costs. • Transactional data and spend reports are an important part of this process and provide a profile of requirements. However, while working on a large project at Toyota I came across a great term Toyota use to understand exactly what is going on at the ground level –

• With a strong understanding of the functional requirements, developing a specification of what is required is extremely important so that a comparison if required can be used in an apples-to-apples sense. Further profiling and task segmentation is suggested to understand the mix of requirements the business has. Some simple rules to follow to segment freight, may include the following combinations: - Order size/product profile/unitisation – this may include the delivery profile such as cartons, pallets, bulk loads and containers. - Safety, handling and service requirements – this may include specific loading or unloading deliveries or hazardous goods requirements. - Distance, geography, lanes – generally grouped into local, near local, regional and interstate with any other lane specific functions. - Method and mode - this can include methods such courier, route, linehaul, network distribution as well as modes such rail, road, sea and air. - Customer segments – this typically fits into the classifications above however can help with internal stakeholders. • With Australian being such a vast geographic space, a one size fits all approach does always apply and true segmentation should be aligned to the industry capability and to the requirements your specific business has. In order to do this well, having a foundational understanding of who’s who in the transport space and who does what well is important. 4. Determine the best approach to go to market (if at all) • To develop a robust sourcing strategy it is important to identify the What and How to go to market ahead of time. In a nutshell, identify the options, risks and expectations to enter the process with your eyes wide open. Know what you need, what options that are available and understand the best fit in the industry to

service. • Before even going to market, a reasonably good idea is to talk to your incumbents. I am continually surprised how little this is done on a regular basis. Being the customer, it is generally your right to ensure suppliers take the time to listen to you. And yes, I completely agree. However, if the organisation’s goal is to serve its own customers well, and transport is an integral step, it is sometimes wise to hold the olive branch – take the time to listen to your provider. • Benchmarking can provide a simple assessment of an opportunity if it exists. However, a key mistake that is often made is requirements and expectations are not clearly understood when sourcing transport services. This can lead to service impact or cost blowouts. Incumbents carriers are always very happy to list all of the value add services they provide. This can be important if what they provide as part of their standard services is costed as an extra by alternate suppliers. Finally, understand what you have and what you need. You should clearly understand the requirements before entering into a sourcing event. If services are documented and tasks segments are aligned with industry capability, you will increase the chance of delivering cost savings as well as ensuring risks are managed. *Before joining Logiworx David Irvine gained extensive operational experience with large organisations including most recently BlueScope Steel. David’s consulting experience includes project management of multiple client engagements and extensive knowledge of supply chain network modelling, transport modelling, inventory planning and procurement including logistics services outsourcing. www.logiworx.com.au

EFIC finance guarantee for coal export terminal Export Finance and Insurance Corporation (EFIC) is providing a US$100 million export finance guarantee to help finance the construction and operation of a $3 billion coal export terminal in North Queensland. The Wiggins Island Coal Export Terminal (WICET) in the Port of Gladstone, is being developed by a consortium of coal companies to provide additional export port infrastructure to meet the demand for coal primarily from Asia. Eight coal companies – Xstrata Coal (on behalf of the Rolleston Joint Venture), Bandanna Energy, Yancoal Australia, Caledon Resources, Cockatoo Coal, Aquila Resources, Northern Energy Corporation and Wesfarmers Curragh – will be the owners of WICET. The terminal is expected to be further expanded in later stages. There are 19 domestic and international financial institutions providing finance to the project under the senior secured loan facilities. In addition to their participation in the financing, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC) will provide additional funding with the benefit of a US$100 million export finance guarantee from EFIC. Peter Field, Executive Director, Origination and Portfolio Management, EFIC, said: “This is an opportunity for EFIC to fill a gap in

the financing of an Australian based export infrastructure project that will support the development of the coal export industry in Queensland. Where previously EFIC has not been called upon to support domestic projects, continued constraints in the credit markets have led to EFIC being asked to work with a consortium of commercial financiers and other export credit agencies to support this transaction. Phil Breaden, Commercial Director, WICET, said: “This project will facilitate the timely development of important coal infrastructure. Given the large financing requirement and the current volatility in financial markets, we are very pleased to have the support of EFIC and SMBC to complete the financing package. Stage 1 of the terminal is expected to be complete by mid-2014. Once completed, the Wiggins Island Coal Export Terminal is expected to provide more than 80Mtpa of additional coal export capacity through the Port of Gladstone. Machinery, Tools and Metal Working

Wind power helps drive FES

Wind turbines drive strong growth for FES

Old fashioned customer service, a belief in Australian industry, and the booming wind tower manufacturing sector are combining to give one local metalworking firm a competitive advantage. Mike Dye, founder of Fabrication Equipment Supplies (FES), is seeing wind tower manufacture driving strong growth of his DAVI range of plate rolling machinery. Clients like Haywards in Tasmania, RPG in South Australia and Major Metals in Queensland are fabricating wind turbines cones with the

DAVI MCB 3060 wind tower lines. According to Dye, these companies are seeing significant production efficiencies as a result. “DAVI has a patented materials handling system and when you’re rolling 10 or 12 metre long plate which is 50mm thick that’s where you make or lose money in the materials handling,” says Dye. “We can roll a wind tower conical section well within 20 minutes.” Worldwide DAVI holds 80 per cent of the wind tower manufacturing sector.

Dye has been in the machine tool business since 1997 and has been marketing DAVI since 2002. As well as the from the wind turbine sector, FES also supplies DAVI machines to hot water system company Rheem and Tasmanian ship builder INCAT. Dye is a passionate advocate for Australia’s manufacturing sector. “Another side to my company trying to source machinery made in Australia. I’m doing the marketing for Scalen in Perth, who make fabrication machine tools. How many other Australian machine tool manufacturers are there? They’ve all gone broke. I hate seeing our country going down the tube,” he says. Dye supports machine tool peak body AMTIL’s advocacy for Australian manufacturing. “They’re pushing the bandwagon to try and buy local, he says. “So many things are being manufactured overseas and our workers are getting the chop. “ There’s no confidence in our industry anymore. Manufacturers are not taking on apprentices or investing in capital machinery and that affects all of us. “With our dollar at 77 to the Euro and about parity with the US dollar it’s hard to export. It is a very tough environment and people are saying it will get tougher still.” Dye says that despite a tough business environment FES has had one of its best trading years. “I keep my costs down and my company’s strong. Last year was the best year I’ve ever had and 2012 is shaping up to be very strong well as well,” he says. Dye believes his focus on service rather than price has allowed the company to prosper in difficult conditions. “I don’t get involved in Dutch auctions. I sell high-ticket items where there are some margins,” he says. “In my business when the customer rings there is an instant reaction and I’ll work day and night to make sure we come up with the

solution they’re looking for. It may not be a DAVI machine, it maybe a machine at a lesser price which I will source for them. I’ll look after them no matter what the enquiry, I treat them like gold.” After sales service forms a key part of Dye’s business philosophy. “Parts have to come from overseas and usually a customer is on his own once he’s bought a machine. I say to my customers when you’ve got a problem you ring me,” says Dye. “When you’ve got a breakdown, like in wind tower production, it’s 10,000 dollars a day minimum. I identify what the problem is, identify what the part needed is and I buy that part that day and it’s sent that day via DHL. I get parts sent from Europe direct to the customer quicker than from say Melbourne to Perth.” Dye said this wouldn’t be possible without a committed OEM. “DAVI know what I sell and they support me accordingly, and the support is exceptional,” he says. 600 Machines looks to the future

(From left) Dalby State High School Deputy Principal Jason Marini inspects the 600 Machines equipment with Peter Griffith and Steve Begley

Aware of the future need for a new generation of engineers and tradesmen in the fast-growing region of Darling Downs in Queensland, Dalby State High School secured a Federal government grant to establish a Trade Training Centre. Clearly, equipment was needed that was affordable and used current technology. Of course it would also have to be suitable to teach teenagers and, above all, had to be safe to operate. And teachers at the high school were well aware that the skills taught had to be relevant to industry needs. So the teachers consulted with local manufacturers and engineering companies – potential student employers – for advice. Their suggestions were then incorporated into the school’s purchasing program. “In many respects, our workshops are a mirror image of local industry, with the same machines and ancillary equipment,” says Head Engineering Teacher Bruce Burt. The pupils, aged between 15 and 17, could learn skills that could lead to a job in industry after leaving school, which would assist in combating a local skills shortage. “In part, our youngsters are striving to produce identical components to those being manufactured locally by experienced craftsmen – and succeeding,” says Mr Burt. The school’s Trade Training Centre has been designed and equipped to comply with current industry specifications. For its machine tool requirements, the school turned to 600 Machine Tools, which has a branch in Brisbane with staff experienced in specifying 3:43 PM

and supplying the right type of machines, along with training, and a maintenance program. Machines selected include a CNC-equipped Colchester-Harrison Alpha 1350 XS lathe, and four Liouy-Hsing LA 430 x 1100 precision lathes capable of heavy-duty turning. In addition to the training program, senior pupils can also gain work experience at local factories. “For example, the companies involved with the Centre have from one to five ‘trainees’ on the workshop floor for five days, says Mr Burt. “ Each pupil either follows a component through all states of its manufacture, or is ‘apprenticed’ to a senior tradesman to polish specific skills. “When the pupils have finished their course at the Centre, they will be placed to complete Certificate II in Engineering and Manufacturing Technology, and be workplace-ready.” The 600 Group’s machines are noted for their high build-quality, accuracy, reliability, excellent L10 (expected) life, and value for money. In Australia, 600 Machine Tools has a sound reputation with company owners and workshop managers throughout industry for the quality of its machines, and exemplary service and training programs. The machines selected for the Dalby Training Centre have been installed and commissioned. Engineer Peter Griffin, from 600 Machines Brisbane branch has assisted in the training for operation of the machines and the programming of CNC controllers. Machine tools specialist at the branch, Steve Bagley, said: “The establishment of a trade school will be good for the area, providing

a steady flow of well-trained young people who can either become an apprentice in local industry or continue their studies to obtain an engineering-related degree at university.” “The young people trained on machines provided by 600 Machinery will become the new blood required by the harvesting, processing, manufacturing, and engineering industries of the region.” Managing director of 600 Machine Tools, Sydney-based Cliff Purser, was delighted with the outcome. The Alpha XS Manual/CNC range was the ideal choice for the centre, he said. “It is available in five versions with a choice of various ‘swing over bed’ and ‘distance between centres’ dimensions for optimum versatility in a wealth of turning applications. “Fast, easy set-up times and simple operation in all modes are the keys to the Alpha XS Series’ continuing success. These very affordable machines benefit from the ultra-high speed 21i TB CNC control. “These virtues are added to high-quality repeatability and accuracy for turning small-tomedium sized batches, superb surface-finish and, most importantly of all, significantly lower component production costs. “For teachers and pupils in Australia’s trade schools and other educational establishments, the versatile and reliable Alpha XS is fast becoming the benchmark for lathes in its class.” 600 Machine Tools Ph: 02 9674 4738 www.600machinery.com.au

AMTIL wins skills grant

AMTIL is helping to supply skilled labour

Melbourne-based Australian Manufacturing Institute Limited (AMTIL) has won a $2.5 million grant to develop critical skills and up-skill existing workers to meet demand in the advanced manufacturing sector. AMTIL won the grant through the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) as part of a $28 million program to create new training programs. The new Federal Government program is aimed at reducing critical skills shortages facing resource, construction, infrastructure and renewable energy sectors. Under the banner Enabling Critical Industries – Supply Chain Skills, Training, more than 300 new and existing workers around the country now has the chance to upgrade their skills and gain higher level qualifications across a range of manufacturing companies, supplying critical products, parts and components to key industry sectors. “The project will train 313 workers in 27 companies from Certificate III to Diploma relating to Advanced Manufacturing,” explains AMTIL’s Project Coordinator David Creighton. “Involving our Advanced Manufacturing Capability Alliance including RMIT University, Swinburne University, Vative and Leadership Management Australia, we ensure flexible

training delivery to workers.” The project aims to up-skill shopfloor staff for qualified trades and management jobs and to provide training for existing workers and people willing to enter the workforce. “To remain competitive, industry needs to maintain its advantage through continuously developing highly skilled workers with effective and strategic nationally accredited qualifications,” says Project Manager Greg Chalker. “Industry is demanding highly skilled workers and this program will support employers to improve the capability of their workforce allowing them a good chance of achieving sustainable growth in their business.” AMTIL CEO Shane Infanti adds it was important that industry and employers took advantage of this project to address their skills in demand. “This funding agreement reiterates the Government’s confidence in our organisation to help deliver the skill level our industry needs in order to compete with the best in the world,” he says. “We have members that see the up-skilling of their staff as an investment in their business and we are very pleased to assist those members in the funding of specific training relevant to their needs.” Minister for Skills and Jobs, Senator Chris Evans, last month announced successful projects under the $200 million Critical Skills Investment Fund (CSIF). The goal of the Fund is to help increase the supply of skilled labour for enterprises in critical industry sectors. To achieve this, the Fund supports many different projects such as AMTIL’s, that train and place job seekers into available positions, and that up-skill existing workers to meet new demands. The successful projects under Funding Round 1 are co-funded by industry contributions and together are worth more than $41 million. Latest innovation and trends on show at Austech 2012 Following the success of innovateAustralia 2011, Austech 2012 in Sydney will again host a special stand promoting innovation and opportunities for Australia’s advanced manufacturers. Organisations will display typical manufactured components in their industry, providing Australian component manufacturers, precision engineering firms, toolmakers, advanced manufacturers or general engineering companies visiting the stand with a unique opportunity to discuss their manufacturing capabilities and to network. “At innovateAustralia 2011 Thales was able to showcase its supply base, but it was a great opportunity to also discuss our supplier strategy in the broadcast workshop forum,”

says Alistair Beaton, Industry Engagement Director, Thales Australia. “This interactive approach was very effective in getting key messages out there about the capabilities we are looking for in our Global Supply Chain, not just in Australia,” he says. More investment in intelligent manufacturing techniques and prioritising key technologies are crucial if Australia is to avoid losing its competitive edge in manufacturing, innovateAustralia organiser AMTIL (Australian Manufacturing Technology Institute Limited) points out, and innovation will play its part in ensuring Australia’s manufacturing productivity. “Innovation is more than just the generation

of novel ideas or the dissemination of knowledge,” says AMTIL CEO Shane Infanti. “It is about making a change or doing something in a new way. Innovation is a key driver of our economy and innovateAustralia 2012 will once again provide a forum for visitors to connect with government and industry and find out about some of the major projects that Australia is currently involved in.” According to Mr Infanti, Australia’s advanced manufacturing sector is moving into new cutting-edge industries, including aerospace and defence, medical, as well as nanotechnology and renewable technologies. Sustainably manufactured products are

increasingly important to consumers, and manufacturers who respond effectively to environmental challenges will have the advantage of being at the forefront of this new trend. The innovateAustralia showcase will be located within Australia’s premier advanced precision manufacturing and machine tool exhibition held at the Sydney Showground, Sydney Olympic Park, from May 8-11, 2012. Energy efficiency is today’s buzzword, in all countries across all industry sectors. The Federal Government’s Clean Energy Future sets to cut pollution by at least 5 per cent compared with 2000 levels by 2020, which will require cutting net expected pollution by at least 23 per cent in 2020. The Australian Government has also committed to a long-term target to cut pollution by 80 per cent below 2000 levels by 2050. Similarly, by adopting the Kyoto Protocol, the European Union has undertaken to reduce CO2 emissions by at least 20 per cent by 2020. To achieve this climate goal, the EU adopted the the ErP Directive (Energy-related Products Directive). This new directive helps with studying the savings potential of numerous energy-related products and stipulating minimum requirements. These new regulations mean that up to 50 per cent of existing electrical fans will need to be upgraded. Limits for fans were defined in June 2010 and are valid now. Fans are used in many areas of manufacturing and in many in-design products, so the EU changes could be longlasting in cutting CO2 emissions – not only in Europe but also in other countries like Australia. Machine tool-based mist extractors use fans and therefore will be subject to these new directives. REVEN GmbH can deliver from now on all of its air cleaners with fans and motors that already fulfil the ErP directive. All of these air cleaners, also known as mist extractors, now wear the green ErP ready sticker. Victorian based Dimac Tooling now offers the German-made REVEN Recojet oil mist separators Ultra Cleaners and Rejet-A air cleaners, which are highly efficient mechanical air filtering units using the mechanical separating system X-Cyclone. Air pollutants and contaminants from oil, emulsions and other fluids are separated from the ambient air as aerosols to a very high extent. Many manufacturers in Australia benefit from Reven products because they require almost no maintenance and low power consumption. Dimac Tooling Pty Ltd Ph: 03 9561 6155 www.dimac.com.au

World class clamping systems from SEI Carbide For about 25 years OML has been committed to the design and production of clamping systems and equipment for machine tools. The high technological level and the specialization of the proposed solutions are the winning cards of the Pavia Company. Thanks to its streamlined and flexible organization, coupled with state-of-art productive resources, OML offers a wide range of innovative and extremely functional clamping equipment that can satisfy all requests. This exclusive range is now available through SEI Carbide Australia. Starting from standard products, the technical department can also develop special solutions to meet customers’ specific needs. The development of special equipment standing out for high technological content has a strategic value because the superspecialization represents the best way to deal with a market characterized by growing complexity, where numbers decrease and competitors increase. For this reason, innovative and technologically advanced proposals are becoming more and more important. In terms of products, if we evaluate the technical-functional aspects, OML’s greatest commitment is aimed at optimizing fast and precise clamping solutions, which assure real flexibility to the end-user. Due to the market’s trend towards the reduction of production batches and the rise of the manufacturing mix, the availability of solutions allowing an easy retooling of the machine tool and, consequently, a significant reduction of downtimes becomes strategic Page 22

for the customer. For this reason the design activity carried out by OML is organised according to modalities that pursue a strict collaboration with the customer, in order to share the specific know-how of the application for which the equipment is intended. The company’s range of standard clamping systems is constantly growing. The catalogue of OML standard products, now available from SEI Carbide Australia, has been widened from 15 pages in 1985 to the present 450 pages. OML has developed a series of joint ventures over many years with outstanding US, German and Japanese manufacturers for a mutual exchange of products. As well as vices, OML has directly designed and manufactured a broad variety of products.

This includes the innovative system Zero Point APS and the new vice Genius, studied for 5-axis machine tools. Other notable products include the new clamping Vari-clamp fixtures, which allow clamping of the most irregular components, and Touchdex, mechanical indexing tables. APS (Automatic Positioning System) is included in the category of the so-called Zero Point products. With its new system with three clamping jaws, this represents an innovation in the specific sector. The system is a universal interface among the machine tool, the clamping equipment and/or directly the piece to be machined. The flexibility of the APS system permits the positioning and the clamping in a single

OML offers a wide range of innovative clamping equipment

operation with repeatability exceeding 0.005mm. APS uses compressed air (6 bars) to unlock while the clamping is performed by springs. Therefore it does not need any power supply in the clamping phase. Once introduced the pins (A;B;C) into the clamping equipment or directly into the piece, the same are integrated into the APS system. Setup times are so decreased by 90 per cent, providing notable advantages in terms of productivity and production costs. Other relevant technical characteristics include the pneumatic system, the 3-jaw clamping, the mechanical locking with geometric coupling of the pin with double irreversible wedge, the self-centring by means of conical pin, the 3000 N clamping force reached thanks to the turbo effect (that’s to say the clamping force of springs is further enhanced by compressed air). And the Pavia company also specialises in the in-house production of tombstones (modular piece-holders made of steel, aluminium or cast iron) which offer high-quality solutions for a broad range of applications. Since 1998 OML has become part of the Italo-German group SMV Autoblok. This was an important step in the company’s evolution, allowing it to create technological and commercial synergies. That takeover has opened new markets to OML. The company now exports 60 per cent of its production to a vast number of countries, including Australia. New certification scheme a wake up call for industry Toyota recalls a series of models with safety problems, an E coli outbreak kills over 30 people in Germany, hundreds of manufacturers caught up in a food safety crisis involving plasticiser DEHP in Taiwan – recently found in Australian food products and a full list of product recalls in Australia from motor vehicles to baby strollers. These headlines make the announcement of a new certification scheme designed to prevent and manage product recalls very timely. Developed by the international certification organisation RABQSA, the International Product Recall Coordinator (RABQSA-IPRC) certification program will recognise the important strategy, risk management and communication capabilities that managers of consumer goods companies need to prevent and manage incidents, reduce the impact of recalls and prevent crises. Product recall expert Steve Hather, who chaired the certification scheme committee and who is also on the international working group developing a new international standard for product recall, believes the certification scheme is overdue. “This scheme will ultimately lead to safer products for consumers and an enhanced reputation of companies that have certified

recall coordinators on staff, says Hather. “It sends a clear message that the company is serious about developing systems and processes that reduce the risk of incidents occurring but when they do, that fast effective action is taken to reduce risk to consumers and damaging the reputation of the company and its brands.” Hather is Managing Director of RQA Asia Pacific Pty Ltd, the region’s only specialised product recall consulting company. After 13 years of working with some of the most trusted names in consumer goods industries to reduce risks associated with product recalls, RQA have captured some very valuable lessons. “All responsible companies will continue to strive for incident-free operations, Hather says. “ Despite that, suppliers will have a problem, mistakes will be made, a process can fail, regulations change and people – and sometimes the media, respond in surprising ways to issues and incidents. A crisis however is not inevitable. In the context of products, crises occur through poorly managed incidents and recalls.” While it is inevitable that a company will have an incident, whether it escalates to a crisis comes down to a company’s ability to:

• Quickly investigate a problem • Make decisions based on solid information and robust analysis • Understand and manage a range of stakeholder expectations • Take fast effective action to reduce risk • Get back into business quickly and • Learn from the experience “Where we see problems is not necessarily around the mechanics of a recall – often the focus of most plans, but around how a company assesses risk, develops strategy, engages with key stakeholders and communicates, says Hather. “RQA is incorporating those lessons into very practical training courses that will help managers improve their capabilities for preventing and managing recalls and prepare them for certification as an International Product Recall Coordinator. “RQA is proud to announce the launch of RQA Product Risk Institute – a training company dedicated to improving product risk management, product recall planning and implementation and crisis prevention for consumer goods companies. The Institute will offer a range of short courses in product risk management, incident investigation, recall planning and

implementation, preventing and responding to malicious tampering, business continuity and crisis management. “We believe enhancing knowledge and skills through effective training and recognising those skills through the RABQSA-IPRC certification scheme will ultimately lead to safer products and an enhanced reputation for the companies that produce them.” For further information on the RQA Product Risk Institute, see www.rqainstitute.com In each of the next five editions of Industry Update, Steve will be selecting one key lesson from previous recalls and providing some additional information about how to prevent incidents escalating into crises. In the next issue, Steve will talk about how ineffective traceability caused what should have been a small scale recall to escalate into the recall of a whole product line and risking the reputation of the brand. Steve is also happy to answer your questions on product risk, recall and crisis management. Contact Steve on info@rqainstitute.com

Cavotec unveils latest Vahle product Next year Vahle, a leader in quality mobile electrification systems, celebrates its 100th anniversary. But the company is by no means resting on its laurels with the development of the new E-RTG System (Electrification of Rubber Tyred Gantry Cranes). As the sole Australian agent for the Vahle range of products, Cavotec Australia is spreading the word about this Vahle product developed for container terminals. Most RTG cranes run on diesel-powered generators, which can be costly with high fuel prices. By using the Vahle system, cranes can be driven between work bays as required in support of the ship to shore cranes. So how does it work? A telescopic horizontal arm is mounted to the RTG containing all the equipment required to power the RTG and integrated into the computer system via a PLC. This PLC

also controls the steering to maintain the correct working distance from the powerail system, which is mounted on a steel structure over the length of each bay. The RTG Electrification System reduces the diesel consumption per RTG by about 90 per cent by utilising the Vahle Powerail System in each bay that the RTG can drive in and out. Thus the diesel powered generator is only required when travelling between bays. The system can be mounted back-to-back accommodating two bays on one structure – subject to port layout. The Vahle RTG Electrification System has a very short payback period at most busy ports with an expected life of 25 years. Maintenance is minimal. Belden has extended its Hirschmann product range with a 9-port version of its Octopus OS20 series. The Hirschmann basic software is installed on this layer-2 switch, which meets the requirements of protection class IP67. The new Fast Ethernet ports (10/100 BASETX) have vibration-resistant M12 connections in D-coding, a robust metal housing and an extended temperature range from -40° to +70°C. The Octopus’s redundancy method and a redundant voltage supply guarantee high network availability. It also meets EMC and fire protection requirements for use in rail vehicles. The switch is designed for wall mounting, can be quickly put into operation with plug and play. “I can see increasing applications for IP67 switches, located in situations that may have airborne particles be they fluid or solid, indoor or outdoor, says Adam Callender, Outbound Marketing Director Asia-Pacific for Belden. “Other challenging applications may have high vibration, such as trains, trams or

buses, or tough conditions in mining and manufacturing.” With the new Octopus OS20 series 9-port switch, Belden has added another variant to the Hirschmann IP67 switch family, which now includes more than 20 different devices. New high temperature tolerant rubber tyres from QHDC

High temperature applications requiring wheels like rotary baking ovens, powder coating ovens and smoke houses call for tough materials. They must not only withstand the heat, but also load and impact in those conditions. Traditional materials used in the manufacture of wheels for these applications include machined steel, cast iron, fibreglass reinforced nylon and resin (sometimes

known as phenolic resin or Bakelite). All these materials are very hard – and unforgiving – especially on prepared floors and surfaces. Constant use of these hard wheels not only abrades and damages the flooring, but can it transmit shock and vibration through the trolley causing fatigue and failure of the trolley parts. Shaking and rattling trolleys can also cause annoying noise for workers and shoppers. A more recent development is a high temperature tolerant rubber tyre compound available from QHDC Australia, that will handle a constant 260°C or a maximum of 300°C intermittently. Moulded on to an aluminium centre hub and assembled with sealed precision bearings these wheels can be mounted on an axle or assembled into castor frames that can be bolted or welded to trolleys. The wheels are now available in the most common size (100mm x 36mm with an 8mm bore) with larger sizes to be released soon. Options include stainless ball bearings and stainless castor frames – all factory assembled using high temperature grease.

Arc flash safety Sperian is now Honeywell

What are the best available options?

Are you safe from Arc Flash? There’s an increased awareness of the dangers associated with working close to electrical circuits because many serious accidents have occurred. With so many employees now working in close proximity to electrical equipment, these employees are potentially at risk from serious injuries, especially if the correct Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) is not selected. If you have electrical equipment operating at 50V or higher, you should take every precaution to protect your company’s most valuable assets – your employees. There is currently a challenge in Australia for companies, which want to maintain a comprehensive electrical safety program, in that there is no Australian Standard available which gives companies a complete overview and direction on electrical safety. Standards Australia is currently working on producing a standard for safe work practices when working with high voltage electricity, however this could be some 12-18 months before a draft is available. While ASNZS 4836: 2011 (Safe working on or near low voltage electrical installations and equipment) was recently published, this standard is lacking in that it provides advice for appropriate PPE, but does not give any direction on how to select the right level of PPE.

Page 26

industryupdate.com.au

For instance, table 9.1 of the standard outlines personal protective equipment which should be used by workers working on or near exposed energised conductors or live conductive parts. The table lists that an arc flash suit and hood rated to a minimum of 40 calories (cal) should be used. This is a high level of protection and a 40 cal rated suit is quite bulky and not really necessary if the arc flash potential is only 12 cal in which case a lighter weight suit could be worn providing increased comfort and mobility for the worker. The standard does not provide any methodology for calculating an arc flash potential which is important as the potential calorie rating for the system being worked on needs to be known so the appropriate and most comfortable PPE can be selected. While it is good to have some direction, PPE that is more targeted to the application would be more applicable. In the absence of a complete Australian Standard, NFPA 70E can help to protect your valued employees and create a safe working environment. The NFPA 70E standard is a comprehensive guide to electrical safety and covers establishing an electrically safe work condition, (ie working de-energised where possible, lock out/tag out),

determining approach boundaries, knowing your Hazard Risk Category (HRC) and determining the proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for each category. NFPA70E lists a wide range of equipment and common tasks performed, and provides hazard/risk category ratings (ratings from 0 to 4) to help select appropriate PPE. For example, if the equipment was metal clad Switchgear 1kV though 38kV and a worker was working on control circuits with energized electrical conductors and circuit parts 120V or below exposed. The standard classifies this task as a hazard/ risk Category 2 and states rubber insulating gloves and insulated hand tools are required. A task classified as a hazard Risk Category 2 has a calculated incident energy level of 4 to 8 cal. Table 130.7 of the standard then outlines the type of PPE required for each hazard risk category. NFPA 70E also includes calculation methodology, which can be used to determine the incident energy (potential calorie rating) of an arc flash, so the correct level of protection can be selected whilst ensuring workers will be as comfortable as possible. Over the years, PPE has changed and advanced due to worker demand and technological advancements. The industry has begun to understand the importance of not only developing and implementing an electrical safety program under NFPA 70E, but they have also come to understand the difficulty in ensuring the worker is actually using the issued PPE while in the field. It is important to understand that where there is a potential for an arc flash and the incident energy (calorie) rating has been determined, products must be selected which will provide adequate protection against this rating. For example, if the incident energy level has been calculated at 8 calories, then a faceshield should be worn which has a calorie rating of 8 cal or higher. A clear polycarbonate faceshield, goggles or eyewear will not provide sufficient protection and will be likely to result in significant burns as well as melting to the wearers face if they were exposed to an arc flash. Face shields were once the major complaint for most workers. In the past, arc flash protection face shields were typically dark and color tinted, making wire color identification and tasks performed in dimly lit areas, all but impossible. Also, while wearing an arc flash protection face shield, a worker needs to lift his/her face

By Michael Carolan

shield from time to time. Most face shields don’t lock into position when lifted or lift high above the worker’s head creating work hazards and lower productivity. Salisbury by Honeywell has developed a new face shield that addresses these issues and more. The Salisbury by Honeywell AS1200 is a face shield that stows in a balanced position, centered over the top of the hard hat, creating a comfortable and locked “up” position for the worker. This unit is easy to use and wear and can increase worker productivity. The unit also utilizes nanotechnology to provide a clearer, more transparent visor for improved visibility and can be used in applications where a faceshield up to 12 cal/cm2 (NFPA 70E HRC 2) is necessary. The industry is always looking for more comfortable electrical PPE solutions for their workers so they may perform their tasks safely. Technology is keeping pace with manufacturers developing new and better products every day, and while we eagerly await the release of an Australian Standard for direction on electrical safety, industry should continue to consult the NFPA 70E standard to ensure employees are fully protected with the appropriate PPE when working in low and high voltage applications. * Michael Carolan is Senior Product Manager at Honeywell Safety Products

Bottlechock: new word in cylinder safety Safe and secure storage of high-pressure gas cylinders is an ongoing safety issue for many workplaces. The demands for convenience and ease of access often collide with the necessity of reliable, secure storage. With these constraints in mind, VISIONSafe has recently expanded its already wide range of products with the addition of the Bottlechock, a unique cylinder restraint system. The Bottlechock has been purpose designed to keep cylinders secure, protecting staff and

often valuable gauges and equipment. The clamp grips around, maintaining full contact with the cylinder to restrict both horizontal and vertical movement. As flexibility is one of the VISIONSafe watchwords, the unique clamp design allows a range of different cylinders diameters to be held by the same clamp. Bottlechock is available in complete kits that can hold from one to four cylinders in separate, individual chocks contained in a single bracket. This provides a compact, easily accessible

storage solution without compromising on the safety of the workplace. The Bottlechock is an Australian made product, tried tested and designed for the harshest of outback conditions. It is suitable for anything from securing a gas cylinder in a work ute to frequent use industrial applications. VISIONSafe Ph: 08 9295 0624 www.visionsafe.com.au

Safety in the workplace

High tech: Designing roof fall arrest systems Designing a safe system for working at heights on domestic or other small-scale buildings has always been a challenge for architects and engineers. Like all construction projects this must be done quickly, with a minimum of cost. But there is much to be considered. There are now a number of new products available to make the task easier and safer. In most cases the aim of a Fall Arrest system is to provide safe access for staff. There should be distinct points on the roof, usually mechanical equipment or the edge of the roof, to enable the cleaning of gutters and the like. Owners are generally not keen to have the appearance of the building downgraded by walkways or horizontal lifelines. The first step is the provision of safe, easyto-use access. When regular roof access is required, there is a range of fixed ladder systems that can be permanently installed. These range from conventional appearing ladders, to ladders like the Miller Pivotloc – a ladder that folds in on itself. This means a ladder can be provided, which is effectively invisible when not in use. For situations where a temporary ladder is used there are also surface mount brackets that will secure the ladder while the climber ascends. In the case of some of the newer models, this provides a rated fall arrest anchorage point.

As the worker reaches the edge of the roof, they should now be able to reach the next anchorage point, so that as they climb onto the roof they are connected through the entire movement. The development of surface mount fall arrest anchorage points for metal roofs, has resulted in a very compact and low profile unit complies with AS/NZS 1891 (Part 4). Some units can be used as simple individual fall arrest points, bases for permanent horizontal lifeline intermediate supports or end anchorages for temporary horizontal life lines. When specifying these units it is necessary to make sure that they are compatible with the roofing profile. Technical files for surface mount anchorage points such as the MILLERFIX available from the manufacturer. These surface mount units come with a closed cell neoprene weather proofing seal, they are usually also fitted by using heavy duty mandrel style rivets (also fitted with a weather proof seal). The positioning and orientation of the rivet lines will be set out in the instructions and should be closely followed. Providing the positioning of Fall Arrest anchorage points for fall areas such as the edges of roofs, must be done very carefully. It is generally recognised that the safest method for this type of work is Restraint, (see AS/NZS 1891-4 Appendix F and Miller Working

in Restraint Guidelines AUNZ 1000/2009). When positioning an anchorage point for Restraint work near an edge, it is recommended that the shortest distance between the edge and the anchorage point is 1m longer than the lanyard the operator will be supplied with (assuming the anchorage is at foot level). For example, if the worker was to be equipped with a 2m Lanyard the anchorage point should be 3m from the edge. Technically this is known as Total Restraint. The next level up the hierarchy is Restraint Technique. This is where the lanyard has length adjustability, and the operator is sufficiently trained so that he can be relied upon to adjust his lanyard to the appropriate length to keep him out of trouble. All of the above is assuming that the surface the person is working on is effectively level and there is not any contaminate such as saw dust, water, grease, oil or ice that would affect his footing on the surface. While it is always desirable and preferable that the anchorages are positioned so that a person connected to them will always work in Restraint, there are times where the system design has to take in the possibility of a free fall. In this circumstance the employer has an obligation, to make sure that a suitable rescue plan is in place. If there is a risk of free fall, usually the safest method of connection between the operator’s harness and the anchorage point is a compact fall arrester. The reason for this is that the compact fall arrester (such as the Miller TurboLite or the Miller Scorpion), will continuously monitor the about of material that is paid out, minimising the amount of slack material in the connection. This will minimise the degree of the freefall. If there is a risk that during the fall the connection part of the fall arrester may come in contact with sharp edge. There is a range of compact fall arresters

that are designed to sustain the impact even if the person falls over a sharp edge. These have been tested against the new European Standard for Fall Arresters – a stringent test that simulates the line of the fall arrester being drawn across and along the sharp edge. If there is a need for the roof worker to walk along the roof, even going around structures on the roof, and there is a fall risk where he is walking. Consideration should be given to installing a permanent horizontal lifeline. This is a 8mm stainless steel wire that is supported along its length, usually just off the roof surface. Operators can connect to the line and walk along next to it, where the line is supported. The intermediate is designed to let the operators shuttle pass through. There are both internal and external corner units so the wire and the operator’s path can be directed around equipment or obstructions on the roof. Permanent lines like this have the advantage of being very low profile – not creating an eyesore. There is some engineering involved in establishing the required strength of the structure supporting the line. Typically the intermediate supports must sustain a force of 12kN, while the end posts and corners should be twice the in-line force. Each system manufacturer can provide either a program or a spreadsheet to allow the calculation of the in-line force. Selecting the right system and parts to provide a safe and secure working environment for working on roofs is vital. Manufacturers of fall arrest and other safety equipment can supply, technical files and other expert information to assist. Sync entices usage – to deliver protection from noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) on the job or at home.

Get into the safe zone In a move designed to encourage workers to observe hand protection procedures in the workplace, Ansell has developed a technique that creates relief zones in the glove structure. Called Zonz Knit Technology Ansell says this new liner knitting technology reduces hand fatigue by providing stress release in the knuckle area through a patented knitting process with a varying stitch design that enhances glove stretch for maximum flexibility and dexterity. Comfort is also enhanced by an additional knitting process that drops down the little finger. With the upper palm portion below the middle-three fingers knitted separately from the rest of the palm, and the little finger joint mounted lower than the rest, independent movements are enhanced resulting in a better-fitted glove. “Gloves that lack comfort and dexterity are often removed by workers to perform some tasks, leaving them open to risk of injury,” says Ansell’s Asia Pacific Head of Marketing, Greg Plemmons. “Discussions with many users of gloves for industrial applications have shown a positive response to this advance in glove design,” he says.

Why employers must have a social networking policy Social networking in the workplace is here to stay – despite an increasing number of organisations preferring to ban the activity. According to a recent report, WorkLifeWeb 2011, 33 per cent of workplaces have banned or discouraged social media in the office. (Up from 20 per cent last year). But what many employers don’t realise is it doesn’t really matter if you ban it in the workplace – employees will still have access to social media outside the physical office. That means they can still post comments that may be detrimental to work colleagues or may tarnish an employer’s reputation. Therefore it is vital to educate employees about the appropriate use of social media and at the same time have a strong social media policy in place. Recent high profile court cases have highlighted the need for social networking and ‘IT use’ policies to cover activities outside the workplace as well as within the office. Social networking is one of those rare

occasions when social change occurs rapidly – without regulation. Organisational policies and criminal law are all lagging behind the rapid technological and social changes that have occurred with the advent of mass social networking. If you don’t write your policy with the end in mind you could be wasting your time. Workplace policies are written to guide and advise staff on acceptable standards of conduct within the workplace. Mostly, staff never need to refer to policies – commonsense and practical problem solving are sufficient to resolve most issues – but not all. When things get difficult and complicated employers and employees fall back on written policies to dictate how a matter should be dealt with. Investigators, lawyers and the courts are guided by these documents too. Giving an investigator a well-written and clear policy regarding social networking will make any investigation more efficient and more specific in its findings. Challenges facing decision makers are lessened when a proper investigation process has been followed and clear findings made – and so is the time and stress in dealing with employee misconduct. In times of rapid change, as we are seeing with the development of social media, it is critical to stay ahead of the game. You must

determine what is OK and what is not OK for your organisation – and put it in writing. Of course “putting it on paper” is not always sufficient – as numerous other articles will attest – but it’s a good start. Education, information and upholding policy is also critical to maintaining the desired conduct within your business. Many people are closely monitoring new cases as they emerge from the courtroom to determine what is acceptable and what is not. But you don’t have to wait for this often slow, inadequate process. While legal precedents provide excellent guidance, in the end each case is decided on its own merits. So even being presented with a seemingly identical set of circumstances won’t guarantee the same outcome in court. The only way to ensure that your staff conduct themselves appropriately is to make decisions about the conduct – write a good policy and enforce it. The courts will enforce your staff policy provided you have observed procedural fairness and developed a fair policy with good education. In the recent case of Damien O’Keefe v Williams Muir’s Pty Ltd T/A Troy Williams The Good Guys (2011) FWA 5311 (August 11, 2011) an unfair dismissal application was dismissed in part because of the strong policies held by the Good Guys company.

By Harriet Stacey

The employee had been sacked for serious misconduct after posting derogatory comments about the employer on his Facebook page. And despite the employee making the comments on a personal computer outside of work hours, the court found in favour of the Good Guys. This was largely because the company had a clear and comprehensive employee handbook covering the way staff should communicate with each other as well as firm bullying and harassment policies. There’s a compelling message there for all employers. * Harriet Stacey is the co-founder and principal of Wise Workplace Investigations. Harriet specialises in investigations and disciplinary processes assisting workplaces to become free of bullying and improve professional conduct. Harriet has personally conducted numerous investigations and supervises a team of investigators and mediators engaged across Australia on behalf of government, corporate and not for profit organisations. Experts go for Gorman - Rupp During a recent Water Operators Industry Association conference, Hydro Innovations, authorised Australian Distributors for Gorman-Rupp pumps, surveyed teams of operators from 17 water authorities, councils and businesses. Operators were asked whether GormanRupp self-primers offered any OH&S benefits over using submersible pumps at wastewater pumping stations. The results where overwhelming. All 17 groups came back with between 16 and 27 tangible OH&S benefits that using GormanRupp pumps could offer.

Gorman-Rupp self-priming pumps offer many safety benefits

Because Gorman-Rupp self-priming pumps are mounted on the surface (compared with submersibles being located in a 6-7m deep pit), operators pointed to the elimination of falling risks and risks associated with working over water. They also noted that confined spaces risks and the associated paperwork and equipment were also eliminated. Repairing, maintaining and monitoring

Gorman-Rupp pumps is done at ground level and without cranes. Operators contrasted this to repairs on submersible pumps, which required lifting devices and sometimes cranes. This they said introduced the dangers of dealing with overhead power lines, heavy swinging weights and vehicle hazards. Operators found Gorman-Rupp pumps choked less and were easy to access and service, using fewer personnel and less time spent on the job. This meant a greatly reduced risk of injury from the work and from contamination such as “sharps.” Valves of Gorman-Rupp pump stations are also located at “ground level”, and usually at around waist height compared to submersible valves, which are located in a shallow below ground pit. Operators said that this reduced slipping and falling risks and risks associated with bending. Also, unlike above ground stations, below ground vaults were sometimes home to snakes, spiders and mosquitoes because of their damp nature. Operators said that pinching hazards were also greatly minimised by waist height valves. Many water authorities, councils, general industry, and engineers are already using or are reviewing the use of Gorman-Rupp self-priming pumps to improve safety, lower operating costs and improve reliability. Sippel’s versatile weigh-packer The locally developed and manufactured, Sippel Hi Tech 2000 Electronic Weigh-Packing Machine can handle a broad range of products – from talc to 10mm river gravel. The standard machine features an all-stainless steel product flow, providing improved wear properties and anticontamination of product. For moist or corrosive environments such as salt, the entire machine and control cabinet can be stainless. These machines are ideal for use with food, chemicals, minerals, cements and some corrosive products. Fine dry emulsions, pastes, powders, granules and mixtures of these can be handled by the stainless auger feeder or even some with moisture/fat content and certain gravel mixtures. Solid accuracy and hygienic performance with minimal maintenance and quick interchange parts for variations in pack sizes from 2kg to 40kg is possible, depending on bulk density and container availability. Good output can be achieved at rates up to six per minute or even higher for smaller pack weights. The machine’s versatility enables a large variety of containers to be weigh-packed efficiently. This includes plastic, woven, paper or a combination of these materials. Filled packs or containers can be open-top bags, valve bags, drums, large cans, tote bins, cartons or boxes. Open-top bags can be closed after weighfilling by sewn closure. One Sippel client uses an attachment to fill a bulk container used during its production process. And a number of machines have been supplied with castors for easy mobility

between hoppers. Clean-out between products/batches is enhanced by easy access and exchangeable hoppers or other change parts. This can save time and avoid risk of different batch or colour contamination. Change parts are limited to between 1 to 4 easily accessible bolts or screws for exchanging items in only a few minutes. Design is compact allowing for good operator and all round access. Narrow width allows ganging for multi-spout operation. Sippel Group Ph: 02 9567 4889

Let FLIR put you in the picture In the food industry, it’s essential to carefully control the temperature of perishable goods throughout production, transportation, storage, and sales. Repeated warnings about illnesses due to tainted and improperly cooked foods highlight the need for tighter process control. Because this almost always involves a human factor, food processors need tools that automate crucial operations in a way that helps minimize human error while holding down costs. Thermal imaging cameras are such tools. Using FLIR thermal imaging cameras, you can make automated non-contact temperature measurements in many food processing applications. Analog video outputs can be viewed on video monitors, and digital temperature data, including MPEG4 video outputs, can be routed to a computer via Ethernet. Especially in the food industry, production engineers and technicians are faced by the demand for higher production output at a constant quality and at lower cost.

Strong year for EFIC Export Finance and Insurance Corporation (EFIC), the Australian Government’s export credit agency, performed strongly last financial year despite ongoing volatility in financial markets. In 2010-11, EFIC provided more than 100 facilities worth $593.1 million supporting exports and overseas investments valued at over $3.4 billion to more than 40 countries. EFIC’s 2010-2011 Annual Report, tabled in Parliament earlier this year, reports EFIC’s profit on its Commercial Account as $30.2 million, reflecting the continuing strength of the underwriting of new transactions and the repayment of existing facilities. The strong results came in a year of significant volatility, higher appetite for debt to finance large-scale resource projects and related infrastructure, as well as an increased demand for SME products against an uneven recovery in the global economy and commercial credit markets, and a high Australian dollar. Demand for bonding lines from companies involved in international construction and infrastructure projects saw EFIC deliver over 45 per cent of its signings in dollar value to the construction industry. This was followed by ship building and repair services at just under 18 per cent. EFIC’s SME team had another year of strong growth, responding to the continuing challenges that Australian SME exporters face in financing their export opportunities.

There were 90 facilities signed with SMEs worth $136.7 million across a wide range of products and sectors. EFIC CEO and Managing Director Angus Armour said that with volatile world financial markets and bank funding issues in Europe, demand for finance from both the large corporate and SME sectors is strong. “We are continuing to adapt our products and approaches in this environment to help Australian firms win new export contracts and protect their offshore investments. Notably, EFIC also is increasingly being asked to deliver cornerstone components of financing for large projects. Mr Armour also commented that EFIC’s results reflected the credit quality of EFIC’s portfolio, which remained strong despite uncertainty around the global economy. On the year ahead, Mr Armour predicts that EFIC and its services will continue to make a difference to Australian companies facing financing barriers when doing business overseas. “Markets remain uncertain and credit conditions overseas will remain tight in the year ahead. As a result, we anticipate increased demand for EFIC to support Australian exporters.

Dazzling 3D display from Objet Objet, a leading supplier of high quality, cost effective inkjet based 3D printing systems, was invited to play a key role at a Test Lab session of Wired Magazine’s inaugural conference in London earlier this year. “3D printing was set to be a hot topic at WIRED 2011, so we wanted to bring someone on board who could demonstrate some of the most exciting applications of the technology,” says Peter Giblin, curator of the Test Lab. “When we heard about Objet’s unique multi-material printing capability we were determined to include Objet Connex technology in the session.” WIRED 2011 Together with O was a knowledge-sharing conference to express new ideas and showcase new innovations. The Test Lab session provided an opportunity

for delegates to explore new technologies, as selected by Wired. “It was a bustling hive of activity with robots interacting with crowd, 3D cameras recording the event and model helicopters threatening to endanger the chandeliers of The St Pancras Renaissance Hotel – not to mention the 3D printing,” says Objet UK Sales Manager Chris Baker. Delegates were treated to 3D printing presentations earlier in the day from Chris Anderson, Wired’s US Editor-in-Chief, and Lisa Harouni, MD and Co-Founder of Digital Forming. The Test Lab provided an opportunity to see the process first-hand with the recently introduced Objet260 Connex multi-material 3D Printer. “The Test Lab was a great success and

we were delighted with the contribution from Objet, says Peter Giblin. “It was great to see the bewilderment and excitement on the faces of those new to 3D printing when they saw models printed during the session, in one build, with moving parts, multiple materials and no assembly required, and they started to contemplate the possibilities.” Objet’s 3D printing systems and 3D printing materials are ideal for any company involved in the manufacture or design of physical products using 3D software or other 3D content.

Safetech has developed a new automated container loading system in conjunction with CLS, the suppliers of the proprietary SLC Seafreight loading chassis. The challenge for Safetech was to provide a system that could elevate a 20 tonne load and then push it into a waiting container. To add to the complexity of the task it was also essential that the scissors lift and pusher be able to traverse a 20m pit. The task initially involved designing a 20 tonne scissors lift with a 9m long platform. This scissors lift was then placed in a 20m pit. At one end of the pit the scissors lift is loaded with a full container load carried on an SLC. The entire load and lift table then traverse the pit to the other end where an empty container waits. The pusher frame on top of the scissors lift then pushes the SLC with its load on to the waiting container. More than 24 tonnes of force is needed to move the load into

the container yet this is all accomplished safely, simply and efficiently by the Safetech CL system. The end result is that an operation that previously took between 2-3 hours and required forklifts and several staff can now be completed in about 20 minutes or less. And there is no risk of injury to operators, no need to tie up forklifts and a the container is packed securely. This was made possible with the combination of the SLC and the Safetech Traversing scissor lift and container pusher. Applications include any products freighted by SLCs – particularly where there is a high volume of containers or a need to load containers quickly and safely. Major coup for Global Track cranes Global Track, manufacturers of the award winning Global Track overhead bridge crane system, has pulled off a major coup with the signing of a lucrative contract with US industry giant ESCO. Global Track will supply 30 bridge cranes to ESCO facilities in Queensland and Dunedin, New Zealand. ESCO, founded in 1913 in Portland, Oregon, is an independent designer, developer and manufacturer of highly engineered wear parts and replacement

Global Track pivotal crane

products used in surface mining, infrastructure development, power generation, aerospace and industrial applications. Global Track, based in Melbourne, has developed the world’s first pivotal crane up to 15m in length – the longest bridge available. The pivotal crane uses fixed side rails with an oscillating, articulating and pivoting bridge via a unique ball pivot and u-hanger. The bridge located between the upper and lower pivots reduces sway usually found in cranes with pivoting side rails. The shorter end carriage allows the crane to move in close to walls and little effort (one hand) is required to

“push” global track because the pivot system allows the end carriage to work independently. The loaded carriage will move with the opposing end remaining motionless until the inertia of the bridge starts it moving. When the loaded carriage stops, the pivot system absorbs the inertia as the bridge comes to a slow standstill. The long travel rails are directly mounted to the roof support or a standalone structure eliminating any need for support rods or pivot side rails. Toyota leads the way Toyota Material Handling Australia (TMHA) has increased its investment in skills development for forklift technicians, and the industry overall, by hiring a further 15 apprentices. The 2011 national apprentice intake means there are now 38 apprentices in the TMHA network, as well as 370 fully qualified technicians. TMHA’s National Training Facility at Moorebank in western Sydney recently hosted a two-day event for all the new apprentices and their branch mentors from across the country. National service manager John Pearsall convened the event, which culminated in the apprentices and their branch mentors from across the country. “Investing in the skills of our future technicians helps keeps Toyota head of the other makes in customer service,” he said. But we also see it as part of our role as the forklift market leader – to set the benchmarks for technician skills and industry safety. The Training Facility is supported by MAS National, a specialist provider of free services to its members and employers who take on apprentices and trainees. 1 24/03/11 12:28 PM Mr Pearsall says it’s important that technicians maintaining the machines are well-trained and observe the highest standards of workplace safety. “Last year Toyota Material Handling conducted 53 training courses nationally

to ensure TMH stays at the forefront of reliability and safety standards and exceeds customer service expectations.” Courses include Toyota Step 1,2 and 3 factory-endorsed training, LPG and CNG installation, e-learning, customer service training, pre-delivery training and driver training and licensing. Mr Pearsall says the overall goal of the National Training Centre is to create a career path that led the industry. “We’re also looking to encourage more women into technical roles in the traditionally male-dominated forklift industry,” he says. Meanwhile, a NSW forklift apprentice has won an educational tour to the US in Toyota Material Handing Australia’s (TMHA’s) annual National Skills Competition. Andrew Borsato from TMHA’s Coffs Harbour branch won the apprentice section of the contest, which culminated in a two-day practical and theory test at the company’s Moorebank (Sydney) headquarters. His prize is a study trip to Raymond Forklift Corp’s headquarters in Greene, New York State. Toyota Material Handling Ph: 1800 425 438 www.toyotaforklifts.com.au

Support crucial during final years Targeted support for apprentices completing the final years of their training will help boost completion rates and ensure small businesses retain skilled workers, says the Minister for Skills and Jobs, Senator Chris Evans.
Launching a new report From Apprenticeship to a Career: An Employer Perspective on Workforce Development Strategies, Senator Evans said it was clear small business faced a number of challenges in retaining apprentices during the final years of their training.
The report, commissioned by the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry funded by the Australian Government, confirmed the need for investment in mentoring programs.

“The report highlights support in the final stages of an apprenticeship is important not only for individual career development, but also for business survival and growth, Senator Evans said. “That is why the Government committed $100 million this year to mentoring programs to ensure people choose the apprenticeship that is right for them and are given individual support to complete their training.

Senator Evans said the report also highlights that employers must ensure apprentices see a career path beyond their training.

“Employers need different strategies to assist apprentices to move from the final stage of an apprenticeship to a rewarding career in industry, he said.

“The report found many employers do not have a systematic approach to addressing these issues as their resources are limited and they are inexperienced in developing workforce development plans. This is very common in small businesses.

“Improved workplace productivity will be achieved by employers maximising the skills and capabilities of their workforce.

Senator Evans said the report’s findings were in line with the Australian Government’s Apprenticeships for the 21st Century Expert Panel.

Treotham has all the right moves From small welding robots to large palletising robots, energy chain specialist igus has developed a new “RSP” adjustable retraction system for secure cable guidance, which can also be used for large arm sizes and very complex movements. Available from Treotham Automation, the RSP’s (pneumatic retraction system) force is generated by a pneumatic cylinder. The retraction force of the system is adjustable by changing the pressure in the cylinder. igus says the force progression remains constant, which ensures secure

retraction of the energy chain in the most complicated fillings, with cables and hoses in any position. The RSP can be attached quickly and easily to various robot models by means of compact mounting brackets. The systems with various extension lengths (from 500 to 1,000 mm) are space-saving and lightweight.

Kockums gives valve distributor a boost Zetco is a national valve distributor that has been sourcing products from Italy for more than 40 years. The company is committed to product innovation, high levels of safety in operations, and achieving the best levels of productivity. Eighteen months ago Zetco contracted Kockums Bulk Systems to supply Tawi vacuumassisted lifting systems for improved handling of boxes and cartons of valves. Zetco was aware of the need to improve handling operations when a shipping container arrived into the warehouse for unloading. The main purpose was to minimise the dangers during the manual lifting of these boxes, and to improve productivity. Typically, when a container is unloaded, the packing list needs to be checked to confirm model and part numbers. There are generally 20 pallets in the container, each holding 30 boxes, and each box weighing an average of about 26kg. For this purpose a Tawi system was installed at the unloading location to move the boxes from the pallet. The vacuum-assisted lifting system offers great ease when picking a carton and relocating it quickly, without any physical effort.

Wall mounted Tawi unit at dispatch

Introduction of the Tawi system resulted in a dramatic improvement in productivity. Previously it had taken two staff two days to achieve the task. Now, one person can complete the same job in about a day. The contrast in staff attitude is also uplifting. Employees now seek the task, instead of being “busy” on other work when they were

faced with the laborious manual system. As well as improving staff safety, Warehouse Manager Steve McAndrew says the new system guaranteed that urgent product requests could be delivered the day the container arrived – a general improvement of two days. The new system is also used to repack valves into Zetco boxes, before being stacked on a pallet. For this application a 40kg lift model was used with a 5m swing arm. And another system was installed at the dispatch location. The recently introduced Cobra model suits these applications best, allowing high speed grab and movement. The operator is able to automatically control the Cobra balance, which is ideal when there are differing masses to lift. And Crown Wave machines at the facility have replaced ladders. Zetco is a prime example of how a health and safety upgrade can deliver significant productivity increases. Kockums Bulk Systems Ph: 03 9457 8245 www.kockumsbulk.com.au

Nissan forklifts reach new heights The increasing demand for high performing narrow aisle reach trucks has led to Nissan developing its first pantograph style reach truck. Following a highly successful US launch, the new SRX Platinum Series is now available in Australia. The SRX Platinum Series is offered in three capacities ranging from 1360kg – 2000kg. It was developed from intensive operator input to ensure its acceptance into the highly competitive reach truck market in the US. This input has resulted in outstanding operator safety and comfort features. Entry and exit is simplified due to a low step height. The side stance design provides comfortable forward or reverse driving and includes a gently sloped floorboard, which sits atop four vibration isolators, offering a relaxed driving position throughout a standing shift. Combined with its cushioned floor mat, the SRX Platinum Series provides a smoother, more enjoyable ride. A dual spring suspension system in the caster design adds to the smoothness and offers a more stable operation over uneven or rough driving surfaces. Operator comfort is further enhanced with thick padding located beneath the operator’s arm, a height adjustable cushioned backrest

and knee pad. A rear overhead guard post and high operator backrest on the SRX Series provide added protection for the operator, which is especially important when working in tight areas around racking. Nissan’s intuitive, multi-function handle is ergonomically designed to reduce operator effort, resulting in precise control. Operational commands including drive, lift and lower, horn, reach, and sideshift (or other auxiliary function) can be performed by this single handle. The dash includes an LED display to communicate truck status and warnings to the operator including: travel speed, battery capacity, hour meter, parking brake warning and steering wheel position. The SRX Platinum Series’ standard safety features include a mast lock (automatically locking mast lift and tilt) when the operator presence pedal is released, lift control (restricting lift speed at faster travel speeds), reduced travel speed at high lift heights, and ramp hold (automatic parking brake) ideal for trucks using push-back racks. The overhead guard’s design incorporates wide slots for maximum upward visibility during high reach operations allowing for easier load handling and increased operator efficiency.

As a further safeguard, all AC motors and controllers on the SRX have thermal protection as standard. In the event that overheating occurs, a warning will alert the operator, immediately followed by a reduction in the truck’s performance level. Two charity events organized by SEW-Eurodrive have raised $110,000 to help those suffering from mental illness. About 300 guests attended a dinner at Melbourne’s Etihad Stadium earlier this year in support of the Mental Illness Fellowship of Victoria. Guests were treated to a smorgasbord of entertainment, fine dining and dance.

The dinner was coupled with SEW-Eurodrive’s charity golf tournament held in September, which was attended by more than 130 players/ donors at Southern Golf Club. In total, the two charity events amassed $110,000 for MI Fellowship Victoria. SEW-Eurodrive’s chairman, Andrew Mansour and managing director, Robert Merola, presented a cheque to the chief executive of MI Fellowship Victoria, Elizabeth Crowther, at the dinner. A highlight of the dinner was the charity auction conducted by Bill Karp of Barry Plant Doherty Real Estate – a long-term supporter of the charity event over its 14 years. The auction saw fast and furious bidding for items such as a Chris Judd replica Brownlow Medal, a guitar autographed by all four members of the Rolling Stones, a Toshiba wide screen TV and a variety of jewellery. Comedian Peter Dee kept the large crowd entertained with madcap jokes and parody songs.

Guests also enjoyed a silent auction, raffle and selection of door prizes, meaning there were very few guests who went home emptyhanded. The night also presented a serious side, with a touching speech from guest speakers Ben Rinaudo and Mel Kelleher, who present community radio program, Brainwaves, on station 3CR. The radio show is one of the many programs supported by the MI Fellowship. The audience heard how their donations directly assist Brainwaves participants. Every person involved in the production and delivery of Brainwaves has a lived experience of mental illness, and is connected to Mental Illness Fellowship Victoria. Over the past 14 years, SEW-Eurodrive has raised more than $1.5 million to sponsor this important work. “Your donations here tonight directly helps

MI Fellowship Victoria find employment, provide education and housing for mental illness sufferers,” said Elizabeth Crowther. “We couldn’t achieve anything like we do without you and SEW-Eurodrive.” SEW-Eurodrive Ph: 03 9933 1000 www.sew-eurodrive.com.au

Handle with care: Porsche gets a gentle lift

Safetech’s three tonne scissor lift

Big boys toys still need love and attention. So when a Sydney Porsche car collector needed a hoist to safely lower his cars down into his basement he chose Australia’s leading scissor lift – Safetech. One of the obstacles for private car collectors can be the space needed to safely store their valuable collection. One solution is to build a basement car park and then use a scissor lift to move the cars between the drive and the basement. Scissor lifts offer a number of advantages for car lifts. They can easily lift many tonnes and the platform can be customised to suit the site. And they are extremely reliable. For this Porsche lover a three tonne scissor lift with a custom 6.2 x 3m platform provided a perfect access solution for his basement garage.

Belden has a new I/O module in its Lumberg Automation range specifically for the decentralised Fieldbus system, LioN-Link. The IP67 module has four digital M12 slots with a higher limit on the output voltage permitting 2A per line and 6A in total. These outputs are designed for safetyrelated applications up to performance level D making this I/O module particularly suitable for failsafe control of actuators or – following a complete switch-off of the 24V output power supply – reliable emergency OFF functions. Terminal equipment can be connected directly to the I/O module so there is no need for terminal boxes, which are comparatively expensive and complicated to install. Depending on the selected LioN-Link bus coupler, this I/O module can be used in Profinet, Profibus, DeviceNet or CANopen networks.

Objet Ltd, a leader in 3D printing for rapid prototyping and additive manufacturing, has launched a new High Temperature Material for use on Objet Connex500 and Eden500V 3D printers. The High Temperature Material (RGD525) is capable of simulating the thermal performance of engineering plastics and provides outstanding dimensional stability for static 3D models and prototypes. Objet plans to make the High Temperature Material available on additional platforms during 2012. The High Temperature Material (RGD525) follows Objet’s launch of Bio-Compatible material (MED610) in September and transparent VeroClear, VeroWhitePlus and ABS-like Digital Material in April this year. “We are very excited to release the latest addition to our growing range of materials for simulating engineering plastics, says Zehavit Reisin, Head of Consumables Line of Business for Objet. “The High Temperature Material allows our customers to perform genuine thermal functional testing of 3D printed parts and prototypes, says Mr Reisin. “The models created in this material are more resilient in diverse environmental conditions, whether in transit or under strong exhibition lighting.” Both the High Temperature Material and ABS-like Digital Material were on display at

this year’s EuroMold, a World Fair for Moldmaking and Tooling, Design and Application Development show in Frankfurt, Germany. The High Temperature material produces 3D models and prototypes combining high thermal functionality with outstanding dimensional stability. The material’s temperature resistance makes it highly beneficial for thermal testing of static parts such as hot air-flow or hot water-flow in taps and faucets. When jetted off the Objet Connex multimaterial 3D printer, the High Temperature Material can be simultaneously printed with Objet’s Tango family of rubber-like materials to simulate over-molded parts such as airflow vents used in automotive, defence and household appliances. In addition to its high thermal functionality, the material features exceptionally smooth surfaces, making it ideal for post-processing applications such as gluing, painting, metal coating, vacuum metalizing and master models for silicon molding. The new Objet High Temperature Material (RGD525) has a Heat Deflection Temperature (HDT at 0.45MPa) of 65°C (149°F) out of the printer and 80°C (176°F) after a short ovenbased, post-thermal treatment. With these new additions, the number of Objet 3D printing materials is brought to a total of 68, including 51 composite materials (Digital Materials), enabling a wide range of rapid prototyping usages, from realistic product visualization to advanced functional testing. Objet is a leading provider of high quality, cost effective inkjet-based 3D printing systems and materials. Objet’s 3D printing systems and 3D printing materials are ideal for companies involved in the manufacture or design of physical products using 3D software or other 3D content.
