MANUFACTURERS FINALLY SEE LIGHT AT END OF TUNNEL

With the federal election now behind us, there has been a dramatic bounce in business confidence. With political stability restored, the landscape for business in Australia has changed.

GEARING FOR THE CHALLENGES AHEAD FEATURE PAGE 14

The newly appointed Coalition government has vowed to move quickly to boost the economy by cutting taxes and building new infrastructure. Prime Minister Tony Abbott has also promised to scrap government taxes on carbon emissions and the profits of large mining companies, introduced by Labor. Two recent surveys show the change of government, low interest rates and the falling Australian dollar will deliver growth this year. More than 600 business surveyed by National Australia Bank have displayed a surprising level of optimism about the months ahead.

The monthly confidence index increased by its sixth-highest ever level in August – from -3 to 6 in net terms. And another survey released by recently by Citi shows the falling Australian dollar is already boosting confidence among exporters. Citi's Scott Southall says companies are forecasting much higher export volumes this year. “This quarter’s report underscores that manufacturing workers have a real sense of optimism about the number of career opportunities that exist today,” Mr Southall said.

SMARTWASHER: THE SAFE WAY TO CLEAN ChemFree Corporation is a global leader in the manufacture of bioremediating parts washing systems. Its systems are sold in more than 40 countries worldwide and are renowned for their bioremediation capabilities. For 20 years the SmartWasher, OzzyJuice and OzzyMat products have been greatly reducing or eliminating the generation of liquid hazardous waste and waste hauling. For the past 18 years Centralised Pumping Systems has distributed the SmartWasher system in Australia, New Zealand and South East Asia.

With the support of Chemfree and a strong distribution network, Centralised Pumping Systems branded as Smarter Clean Green, has been providing a safe and healthy alternative to hazardous solvent use and is easily integrated into any company’s "green initiative" program. up the unit with OzzyJuice when it is low and changing the OzzyMat once a month, to rejuvenate the microbes, is all that is needed to maintain this environmentally friendly and environmentally responsible parts washing system. OzzyJuice degreasing solutions are Clean Air Certified (AQMD), NSF certified and have numerous approvals. SW6.8 is specially formulated and approved for use in military and weapons cleaning and some aircraft cleaning applications. SAFETECH AND TIEMAN MERGE

An entrepreneurial Neil Tieman turned his trade skills into a growing enterprise supplying tanks, vats and stainless steel tankers to Australian business. In 1972 Tieman Industries expanded into the emerging materials handling industry and very quickly established itself again as a market leader. Thirty years after Neil had started his corporate success story a second materials handling company was born. This time the location was regional Victoria. Safetech started from a simple concept designed to prevent injury in workplaces and subsequently grew into the first regional Victorian company to win the National Telstra Business of the Year award. These two companies became fierce competitors in the Australian industrial lifting market. For many years they were the source of heartburn and anguish to

each other but along the way a mutual respect was created. They recognised in the other strong core values and design and manufacturing excellence. Worthy opponents. In 2013 an exciting new joint venture has arrived in the form of a merged Safetech and Tieman Materials Handling – STS Safetech Tieman Solutions. STS will be headquartered east of Melbourne with sales offices in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth. It maintains an experienced team of seven design engineers who have built lifting equipment for all industries and all major Australian companies. Design and manufacturing facilities in Victoria are complimented by partnerships in the US, Thailand and China – providing high quality products at the most efficient pricing. The STS range includes Australia’s largest array of dock equipment, freight hoists, pallet handling equipment, workstation cranes and scissor lifts. Recent custom scissor lift projects include two of the largest scissors ever built in Australia – the 25 tonne, 14 x 7m platform truck lifts for the Melbourne Emporium as well as multiple large lifting solutions for Australia’s premier miners. When you shop at Coles, Woolworths, Aldi, K Mart, Target or almost any store in Australia chances are that your purchase will have passed over dock equipment from STS. The new company inherits the strengths and pedigree of its two founding family companies and a drive to excel as the undisputed market leader in the Australian dock products and lifting market. STS is without peer for its experience, design skills and market knowledge. And no Australian industrial lifting company can match its range of products and international partnerships.

Continued from cover

Why STS was created and how you benefit The past 10 years has seen an enormous structural change in Australian industry and the world economy. It has become apparent that scale and critical mass are vital if companies are to prosper long term. STS is now an obvious first choice for dock products, lifting solutions, freight hoists, pallet handling equipment and many other products in the Australian market. As a new force in Australian lifting solutions, STS has the size and skills to serve the diverse Australian customer base. From supplying the major retail chains with quality, modern dock solutions to designing and building specialised handling equipment for the resource industry in the Pilbara, there is no other company with a similar depth of talent and experience in Australia. The Tieman Materials Handling and Safetech joint venture is a perfect match. One company’s strengths compliments the others weaknesses: • Where Tieman were strong in direct sales Safetech were lacking • Safetech’s focus on engineering delivers STS an enviable engineering resource that has proven itself with the recent design build and installation of the Emporium scissor lifts • Safetech has developed a strong web presence and web lead generation • Both companies have long and trusted international partnerships that offer both product and manufacturing sourcing. STS is a company designed from the ground up to serve the future needs of Australian industry. It has scale, skills, supply options and a focus on the customer at its heart.

FAIR WORK ACT NEEDS EXTREME MAKEOVER

PROMISES, PROMISES … IT’S TIME TO DELIVER

The previous Labor Government under Julia Gillard’s watch promised to modernise workplace awards for the benefit of employers and employees. By replacing multiple state and federal awards, Ms Gillard assured us it would lessen the burden on business. But talk to any small business owner today and they will tell you the reverse is the case. Labor’s new Fair Work laws have brought greater complexity, greater uncertainty, greater inflexibility and greater costs. The regulations are so complex that most employers can't work them out. In short, they’ve been a disaster for job security and job creation. They have effectively strangled employers and killed any incentives to employ additional full-time staff. There is now a growing number of skilled people who can't find full-time work because 40 per cent of new jobs are casual or contract. And horror stories are emerging where small businesses are being forced into bankruptcy or are suffering severe financial strain because of vexatious and

often spurious claims by “aggrieved” employees. The new Fair Work laws have caused an explosion in litigation. In the law's first full year of operation, the number of formal cases lodged with Fair Work Australia leapt 110 per cent to more than 37,000 cases. Under the new laws, the onus of proof has been reversed – employers are GUILTY until proven INNOCENT. The only winners are industrial lawyers, whose numbers are mushrooming daily. The Australian Industry Group, set up to protect the interests of Australian industry, has identified some 120 areas where union power has increased under the Fair Work Act. Chief executive Innes Willox has repeatedly warned Government that the bill fails to address issues of real concern to Australian business. Mr Willox says the absence of any attempt at balance is glaring. Senator Eric Abetz, while opposition spokesman on industrial relations, was an outspoken critic of the legislation. Now, as Minister for Employment in the Abbott Government we urge him to review this divisive legislation as a priority.

“We look forward to the new Government now putting its words into action..” Industry Update congratulates the Coalition on its election victory. During the election campaign PM Tony Abbott pledged his support for Australia's manufacturing industries. The Coalition remains committed to a strong Australian-based manufacturing sector, said Mr Abbott. He has promised to “remove the shackles that are holding the sector back” and is "confident that manufacturing will again start to expand.” With a healthy majority, the Government has been given a clear mandate to now put its policies in place. We welcome the appointment of Ian Macfarlane, an experienced campaigner, to the key Industry portfolio. Mr Macfarlane was Minister for Industry, Tourism and Resources in the Howard Government from 2001 to 2007. He won the portfolio at the expense of Shadow Minister for Industry Sophie

Mirabella, who narrowly lost her Victorian seat of Indi to Independent Cathy McGowan. And senior liberal Andrew Robb, the Shadow Minister for Finance in Opposition, has been rewarded with the newly created portfolio Trade and Investment. Mr Macfarlane and Mr Robb will be tasked with driving a new wave of investment in Australian manufacturing, resources and agriculture. At the core of its policies the new Government plans to abolish the carbon and mining taxes to give industry some much needed breathing space. The Coalition has also pledged to cut red tape to the tune of $1 billion a year and lower company taxes by 1.5 percent. It has also promised to provide an initial $50 million in export market development grants and put $50 million into a manufacturing transition fund. A review of Fair Work laws and tougher anti-dumping laws are also on the agenda. It’s an ambitious program and we look forward to the new Government now putting its words into action.

BACK ON TRACK With the proposed abolition of mining and carbon taxes, mining executives are also exhibiting a “new sense of optimism.” And consumer confidence climbed sharply in September. The Westpac/ Melbourne Institute Index of consumer sentiment climbed 4.7 per cent in September from August to 110.6 points – above the 100-point level that means optimists outnumber pessimists. Many of the Coalition’s pre-election policies are designed to stimulate manufacturing and small business, including: • A promise to cut the company tax rate by 1.5 percent. • Slashing red tape to save small business $1 billion a year. • Making Small Business a cabinet portfolio within the Treasury department.

Continued from cover

• C reating a new ministry for Trade and Investment • Establishing a manufacturing Transition Fund to provide grant funding of up to $10 million for “new and expanding manufacturing sectors.” • Restoring funding to Export Market Development grants, to assist SMEs. • Creating a new $80 million HECSstyle apprenticeship support scheme. These new measures will be welcomed by manufacturers who continue to struggle, despite recent sharp falls in the Australian dollar. Manufacturing activity has contracted for 26 months up until August, battling headwinds from the strong Australian dollar, tough overseas competition, cheap imports and a shortage of skilled workers.

MEGA LIFESCIENCES OPENS NEW $8M PLANT Pharmaceuticals company Mega Lifesciences Public Company Ltd has expanded its Australian business operations with the opening of a new $8 million manufacturing plant in Pakenham Victoria. Mega Lifesciences Public Company Ltd, which employs over 4,000 people worldwide, established the first soft gel capsule manufacturing plant in Thailand and was granted its TGA license in January 1994. It is now one of the largest facilities in South East Asia. It is becoming a major player in the pharmaceutical industry with a presence in over 20 developing countries with a focus on manufacturing prescription and OTC pharmaceuticals, healthcare and dietary supplements for marketing and distribution in Australia, South America, the Middle East, CIS Countries, Asian markets and Germany. Mega Lifesciences Public Company Ltd was established in Thailand in January 1982 and opened its first Australian manufacturing plant in Dandenong in 2002. The business has gone from strength to strength with increased investment bucking the current trend of Australian manufacturing taking production offshore. Mega Lifesciences Australia Pty Ltd Managing Director, John Farley

said global growth and demand for the company's soft gel (liquid filled) capsules had prompted the decision to relocate most manufacturing of its tablets and hard shell capsules from Thailand to Melbourne. A new manufacturing facility is also being constructed in Thailand. Other manufacturing services to be undertaken at Pakenham will include new product development and unit packaging, with a major feature of the new plant being its increased packaging capability for bottles, sachets and blister packs. Mr Farley said the decision to invest in Pakenham was based on Australia's excellent reputation for manufactured health care products in overseas markets and the commercial success of Mega Lifesciences' Melbourne-based manufacturing business. The new Pakenham plant is expected to increase local production and exports by at least 50 per cent over the next four to five years.

JAPAN CAR MAKERS GOING GREEN Four of Japan’s leading manufacturers – Toyota, Nissan, Honda and Mitsubishi – plan to expand sales of next generation green vehicles by cooperating on thedevelopment of electric charging stations. They say there is a critical need to develop infrastructure in Japan for vehicles that can be charged from a power point, such as plug-in hybrids and electric cars. The car makers said they will work with the Japanese Government to more than double the number of charging outlets to at least 4,000 quick chargers and 8,000 regular chargers. The manufacturers will temporarily bear part of the installation and maintenance costs that are not covered by government subsidies of 100.5 billion yen ($1.1 billion) announced for 2013-14. They said an expanded charging network would maximise the electric only driving performance and combined fuel economy of plug-in hybrids.

Detect overheated fuses

It would also enable motorists to extend the driving range of electric vehicles, which do not produce any tailpipe emissions. Normal chargers would be installed in commercial facilities, such as large shopping malls or highway service areas where motorists typically stopped for long periods. Quick chargers would be installed for shorter duration stops at highway parking areas, convenience stores and fuel stations. The Japanese government wants sales of next generation cars accounting for 15 to 20 percent of new-car sales by 2020.

Stratasys Chairman and Chief Innovation Officer, Scott Crump, was awarded the Rapid Technologies and Additive Manufacturing (RTAM) Industry Achievement Award by the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME). Francisco Medina, manager of the University of Texas at El Paso's W.M. Keck Centre for 3D Innovation, presented the award to Mr Crump. Established in 2008, the Industry Achievement Award annually recognizes one individual, team or company for outstanding accomplishments that have had significant impact within the additive manufacturing industry or in any industry through the application of additive manufacturing technologies. Mr Crump has served as the Chairman of the Board since Stratasys Inc's inception in 1988. Since the company's merger with Objet and formation of the new entity – Stratasys Ltd – Crump continues as full-time Chairman as well as Chief Innovation

Officer. Crump along with his wife Lisa H. Crump, invented Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) technology. Meanwhile, Stratasys Ltd and MakerBot, a leader in desktop 3D printing, have completed their merger. The merger enables Stratasys to now offer the world’s most popular desktop 3D printer. Stratasys, established more than 25 years ago, is a pioneer in 3D printing for prototyping and production. SUSTAINABILITY A ‘TOP PRIORITY’ FOR INDUSTRY When it comes to sustainability, Australian manufacturers are leading the way. A recent survey has found the government and services sector is substantially lagging behind manufacturing in the provision of many sustainability practices. The 2013 Corporate Environmental & Sustainability Governance Survey was conducted across 19 different industry sectors. These included heavy industrial, food, resources, construction, the government and the service industry sector and manufacturing. Released recently by leading independent standards company BSI incorporating NCSI, the biannual survey found 100 percent of manufacturers surveyed indicated they have environmental and sustainability policies, conduct energy audits, and implement energy efficient processes. Significantly, only 69 percent of government services organisations undertook energy audits, just 85 percent

have energy and sustainability policies, while 82 percent implemented energy efficient processes in 2012. “There are exceptions to these findings, with government and services performing more robustly than manufacturing in the delivery of environmental procurement policies (73 percent against 43 percent) and sustainability reporting (79 percent against 63 percent),” says Nick Koukoulas, Managing Director of BSI incorporating NCSI. “Given the greater energy consumption of manufacturers, it’s not entirely unexpected they have all undertaken energy audits and implemented energy efficient processes. “However this doesn’t absent the government and services sector from addressing issues of environmental and sustainability governance, and that there is such a gap to manufacturing is quite surprising in light of the current level of political debate about the environment.”

DEB UNVEILS NEW $15M MANUFACTURING PLANT Almost every week a manufacturing business in Australia closes – or moves operations off-shore. But the Deb Group has defied the trend with the opening of a new $15 million, state-of– the-art manufacturing, warehousing and office facility in South Western Sydney. Deb, a world leader in occupational hand hygiene and skin care, will use the new 5000 sqm facility at Moorebank as its base for the Australian and SE Asian markets. NSW Premier and Minister for Western Sydney Barry O'Farrell, attended an opening ceremony recently with Ned Mannoun, Mayor of Liverpool City Council and Melanie Gibbons, Member for Menai. Deb managing director Steve Saboune said: “At a time when many companies are closing their doors in Australia – and are moving their manufacturing facilities to Asia, this investment in a world class facility and expected staff growth of 10 percent per annum confirms our commitment to the Australian market and

its role in growing Deb’s presence in the Asia Pacific region.” Deb’s commitment is not only healthy for the Australian economy and local employment – it is also opportune for the health of Australian workers. With flu season expected to impact on some 58 percent of Australia’s workers, resulting in lost time, decreased productivity and costly errors, Deb hand hygiene products have a proven track record in successful infection control. Epidemiology Associate Professor at the University of NSW, Dr Mary-Louise McLaws says workplace hygiene “should be an institutional priority.” The National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System identified a large increase in recorded influenza cases in Australia last year, compared with previous year’s figures and this trend is predicted to escalate. The cost to business in Australia each year through absenteeism is estimated at more than $175 million. International scientific research proves that hands are the most effective vehicle for the spread of germs that cause

State-of-the-art … Deb’s new manufacturing facility in western Sydney

common illnesses, through touching everyday surfaces like telephones, lift buttons, door handles, desk surfaces, keyboards and pens – even by hand shaking. Deb’s broad range of hand sanitisers help to prevent and control the spread of infection. A number of infectious diseases such as golden staph and flu can be spread from one staff member to another by contaminated hands.

Infection control in the workplace aims to prevent ‘bugs’ from coming into contact with a person in the first place. Employers are obliged under the Occupational Health and Safety Act (2004) to provide a safe workplace for their employees, including the provision of adequate infection control procedures and the right equipment and training. An estimated three million Australians in key work sectors use Deb products daily.

GEARING FOR THE CHALLENGES AHEAD For the Australian CAR industry to survive it must change its business model By John Wormald, Managing Partner of Autopolis, (www.autopolis.com) a strategy consultancy specialising in the automotive industry. He has worked in most sectors of the industry and on government policies for the industry, and in most regions of the world, including Australia. This article is published courtesy of the Society of Automotive Engineers - Australasia Autoengineer Journal (www.sae-a.com.au)

Jaguar Land Rover has taken its global brand and prestige models to new markets – including the new Range Rover Sport shown at the Shanghai Auto Show. The company opened an office in Singapore in March to support its growing sales success in the Asia Pacific region.

In 2004, we published a book called Time for a Model Change – Re-engineering the Global Automotive Industry. Then we suggested the industry’s business model was not sustainable. The same can be said of Australia’s automotive industry today. Figure 1 shows Australia’s production volumes (blue columns, left hand axis) from 1999 to 2012 and its share of world vehicle production (red line, right hand axis).

From 1999 to 2003, Australian production increased by over a third and its share of global production increased by almost a third. This generated a good deal of optimism and a determination to support the national industry by means of a considerable injection of public funds, through the Automotive Competitiveness Investment Scheme (ACIS) and then Automotive Transition Scheme (ATS), even as import tariffs were taken down to negligible levels. These schemes have clearly failed. There has been no real strategy, as there has been no clearly defined viable end state to which to transition the industry. Production in 2012 was down was almost 50% from the peak and share of world production fell by well over half. Mitsubishi abandoned production in Australia and Ford is now to follow. What went wrong? What are the options now? The high Australian dollar exchange rate and high labour costs have not helped, although the impact of the former has been mitigated to some degree by importing more

14

industryupdate.com.au

components. Australia is not a low cost country, but its automotive labour costs are no higher than Germany’s. The problem in Australia is not lack of government support. Per car produced, the Australian industry gets reasonable public money compared to others operating in an open market. The problem is lack of scale and ill-defined strategy. Figure 2 shows frontier curves between profit and loss. The higher the locally produced volume, the higher local content can be. Thanks to higher price realisation and gross margins, the curve for speciality vehicles lies below that for volume vehicles. (see Figure 2) There are in fact two automotive industry business models in Australia. Toyota Motor Corporation Australia builds a global product on a global platform. The development and updating/replacement costs are amortised over global volumes, with only limited engineering capability required within Australia.

OPINION •

Facing increasing pressure... GM's assembly line.

Figure 2 – frontier curves between profit and loss.

The Altona plant competes with other plants in the worldwide Toyota production network and this will continue for as long as Toyota needs its capacity and it is competitive. About two thirds of production is exported. Local content appears to have been reduced in recent times to cut cost. The Toyota model doesn’t require or justify a full local engineering capability. However, Toyota has based one of its global Technical Centres in Melbourne. On the other hand, GM-Holden builds the Commodore on an Australian developed and maintained platform. Commodore is produced at speciality vehicle volumes, but tries to sell at volume vehicle prices, leaving

Holden’s manufacturing operations firmly exposed to the loss zone. Reduced local content won’t get it out of trouble. It’s not clear what GM gains by having Holden assemble the Cruze at a low local content, compared to simply importing it, except as a prop to its loss making local manufacturing operations. GM Holden also operates a major design facility in Melbourne. Ford Motor Company of Australia does the same with the Falcon and Territory. Ford evidently could not justify developing a new Australian product. Nor did local assembly of a global one – switching to the Toyota business model - look financially plausible at very low volumes. Ford has said it will continue its Melbourne based design operations. As the Australian market has become more sophisticated and with increased purchasing power, the traditional Australian designed cars have simply lost their local brand prestige and market following. The sales of Australian designed product in export markets has been too small to compensate for the lost domestic volumes. The drop in local content severely hurts the Australian supplier sector and makes its own cost position worse. Unless massive government subsidy is continued, Australia is on course to lose the whole sector with its employment and technical capabilities. Wishing volumes up is an illusion. Trying to defend the status quo simply has not worked. This leaves one last possibility. Try to recreate a

distinctive Australian platform and family of vehicles built on it, with a strong innovation and technology content, plus a solid local brand image and following, plus sufficient export potential, which can justify premium pricing and thus survive at modest volumes. There is an example of such a revival – Jaguar Land Rover. Jaguar is a true up-line specialist, with a distinctive positioning and image within passenger cars, building some 75,000 per year. Land Rover occupies much the same position within SUVs, building 300,000 per year. Also speciality vehicles are not limited to passenger cars, as Land Rover shows. Australia should be looking at all non-volume vehicle sectors. Volvo Cars is another possible example. Volume manufacturers have almost universally had a miserable track record in trying to enter the premium speciality sector. Ford let go of these two brands to new Asian owners. Should Holden have a new owner? There are no easy or simple answers. What must happen now is a dispassionate and independent review of the history, current position, apparent prospects and options for the Australian automotive industry in its global context. The industry needs to clearly define what its defensible future position might be, without indefinite subsidy, and a plausible trajectory for reaching set targets, including possible overseas partners. This review must cover both the vehicle and component sectors.

FUTURE OF AUSTRALIAN CAR INDUSTRY ‘MUST INCLUDE LPG’ Gas Energy Australia, the national peak body representing the LPG autogas industry, has called on the major political parties to factor Australia’s abundance of gas into their transport and manufacturing policies. Increased use of indigenous transport fuels could reap significant environmental, energy security and community benefits, they claim. "We welcome the commitment of Labor and the Coalition to maintaining a robust vehicle manufacturing industry", said Mike Carmody, CEO of Gas Energy Australia. "It is in everyone’s interests to have a healthy manufacturing base." "The LPG autogas industry is looking for the major parties’ commitments to include LPG. There are half

a million Australians driving LPG vehicles, and putting more on the road will help save automotive jobs, improve the environment and cut motoring costs for families." The Association calls on a newly elected Government to commit to: • Mandating that Government fleets buy Australianmade vehicles that deliver budget savings and environmental benefits, and use indigenous alternative fuels such as LPG. • Maintaining funding for Commonwealth grants that help motorists buy new LPG models or covert existing cars. (The current scheme is due to expire in 12 months.) • Regulating that vehicles imported into Australia must be capable of converting to LPG.

• R emoving LPG vehicles from the recent FBT changes. • Supporting an industry task force to plan for a viable Australian LPG autogas industry including strategies to increase the take-up of new and converted LPG vehicles. "Commitment is crucial. Right now there are 2000 businesses involved in converting and servicing LPG vehicles and they are doing it just as tough as the car manufacturers." Gas Energy Australia has provided a detailed budget submission to the major parties and is working with other peak bodies and the Government on a strategic industry development program to increase the take-up of LPG vehicles.

NEED NEW INDUSTRIAL BRAKES? … SO WHAT'S STOPPING YOU? The Australian market now has a new supplier of industrial heavy-duty brakes with Deanquip launching the KTR-STOP range of brakes at AIMEX 2013 in Sydney earlier this year. A leader and innovator in mechanical power transmission, KTR has now designed an optimum braking system to cater for industry needs. The end result is the high quality KTRSTOP range of callipers. While sharing the same design principals of typical heavy-duty industrial brakes, KTR-STOP has some key differentiating features. The shafts on which the floating callipers slide, are fully encapsulated with seals that eliminate the common problem of the callipers sticking. Also, a key feature helping with operating costs, the design allows 100 percent wear of the brake pads, eliminating the need to change out the pads before all the friction material has

been used. This gives longer pad life and, more importantly, less frequent need to stop plant for maintenance. KTR-STOP is available in both active and passive braking systems with pads in both organic and sintered materials. Importantly, KTR pads are fully interchangeable with the Svendborg pads on all main models of Svendborg callipers. KTR sintered metal pads are also available with the option of square blocks filling the entire braking surface as well as the traditional round puk style pieces of wear material on the braking surface. The KTR-STOP brakes fit well with KTR’s existing product lines of brake disks and couplings which have a long standing presence, and are viewed as market leader, both globally and here in Australia. KTR, a renowned supplier of power transmission components, has built an enviable reputation for German engineering excellence and quality.

Engineering excellence … KTR-STOP brakes from Deanquip

It has a proud heritage beginning with the invention of the curved tooth coupling, which became known as BoWex, and the jaw coupling known across the industry as ROTEX. Deanquip has represented KTR in Australia for almost 40 years.

ADVATEK INVESTS IN FUTURE GROWTH Kevin Edmonds, Production Manager at Advatek recently invested in two Makino F5 machines from family owned Australian company Headland with surprising results … Nearly eight months ago, Advatek installed two new Makino F5 machines as part of their workforce, replacing two older machines more than 20 years in age. “It was nice to get in some new machines that were easy to operate, offer better tool life and a new control panel,” says Mr Edmonds.

“One of the great things was that we were awarded the Clean Energy Grant from the Government so it certainly helped when financing the machines.” Mr Edmonds worked closely with the Headland team who managed the Clean Energy Grant from start to finish. “It was great to have someone to manage this for us that were experienced and knew what details to add to get it over the line,” Mr Edmonds said. With the new machines Advatek has

achieved an increase in production of 48.12 percent, based on how long it takes to machine the same part. “We have also seen a great reduction in energy consumption,” he said. Mr Edmonds said the Advatek shop has previously consisted mainly of Makino machines, so it was at the top of the company’s considerations list. www.advatek.com.au www.headland.com.au

NEW TRAINING CENTRE HELPS TO EASE SKILLS CRISIS

Faster measurement is achieved by using a coarser thread which feeds the spindle by 2mm per revolution of the thimble instead of the standard 0.5mm. This increase in thread lead has been made possible thanks to new high precision thread-cutting and test techniques. Trials show that a reduction in positioning times of 60% and measuring times of 35% can be obtained, compared with a conventional micrometer.

If it is to expand, thrive, and prosper, industry in Queensland must have a continuing supply of skilled workers. Evidence of this came last year, when a Department of Education, Employment & Workplace Relations report identified many skills shortages throughout the state, including mechanical engineers, metal machinists, sheet metal workers, metal fabricators, welders, and several related categories. One of the country’s many institutions for Technical & Further Education, the Central Queensland TAFE has risen to the challenge. Its sole purpose is to skill the people of Central Queensland, and it is leading the way in its use of technologies to deliver its education and training in the classroom, to workplaces, and to businesses across the state. The institute has four main regional campuses at Rockhampton, Gladstone, Emerald, and Mackay – and it is in Mackay that captains of industry have seen the construction and implementation of something new and exciting. Just completed is a trade training centre to replace existing premises, and it is located beside the CQ University premises. Rather than recycle or transfer existing machinery and ancillary equipment, it was decided to go for an “all new” approach. Among the suppliers was 600 Machine Tools, the UK-based manufacturer that has been designing and building world-class machinery since Queen Victoria’s reign, and is now the biggest manufacturer of turning machines in Europe. The institute selected 20 training lathes from the Colchester-Harrison range – along with 12 Erlo drilling machines by 60-year old Erlo of Spain, and four mills from 70-year old Lagun of Spain. The Faculty Manager of Engineering Services at the CQ TAFE, Steve Bird, explained: “The teaching teams were given the opportunity to select the machines. Understandably, they had specific requirements associated with training resources, and these guided them when finalising their selection. “In addition, they had a focus on reliability, support, safety, and longevity when determining specific machines. After careful analysis of the available

options, the teams selected a variety of machines that reflect industry expectations.” Managing director of 600 Machine Tools in Australia, Cliff Purser, said: “The machines chosen by the team at CQ TAFE are ‘best in class’ – from manufacturers with an exemplary track-record – and we are confident that every machine will meet or exceed the expectations of the teaching team over a long working life.” The new training centre was fitted out, the machines installed in a herringbone pattern, and the doors opened for the first-ever class in mid July. A lot of painstaking work had been completed before opening day, with high-precision machinery and ancillary equipment being installed with all the necessary care. Next came the important process of commissioning, followed by a familiarisation process for the teaching staff – both tasks performed by engineers from the Brisbane office of 600 Machine Tools. The students at the centre are mainly male and female apprentices, still in their final year at school and seeking apprenticeships in industry – helped by guidance from CQ TAFE staff with expertise in career development. The 600 Machine Tools company will demonstrate how education institutions can benefit from its products and services at the AusTech exhibition in Melbourne from May 7-10 next year. 600 Machine Tools Ph: 02 9674 4738 www.600machinery.com.au

• COOLING & FANS – PART

DON’T LOSE YOUR COOL IN THE WORKPLACE

Employers have a duty to take every reasonable precaution to ensure the workplace is safe for the worker. This duty includes taking effective measures to protect workers from heat stress disorders if it is not reasonably practicable to control indoor conditions adequately, or where work is done outdoors. Certain steps can be taken to reduce discomfort. These include:

• U sing fans, air conditioning or evaporative cooling • Open windows • Building insulation • Direct sunlight control • Wearing light, loose fitting clothing • Taking more frequent breaks • Drinking cold beverages (ones that do not have caffeine or alcohol) • Allowing flexibility to permit less

physically demanding activities during peak temperature periods • Using screens or umbrellas to create shade. According to Safe Work Australia workers carrying out work in extreme heat must be able to carry out work without a risk to their health and safety so far as is reasonably practicable. It is important to distinguish between a condition that threatens health and safety, and a feeling of discomfort. Heat strain can arise from working in high air temperatures, exposure to high thermal radiation or high levels of humidity, such as those in foundries, commercial kitchens and laundries. This condition is potentially fatal, Safe Work Australia warns. Both personal and environmental factors should be considered when assessing the risk to workers’ health from working in hot environments. Personal factors include the level of physical activity, the amount and type of clothing worn, and duration of exposure. Environmental factors include air temperature, the level of humidity, air movement and radiant heat. Work should be carried out in an environment where a temperature range is comfortable for workers and suits the work they carry out.

Air temperatures that are too high or too low can contribute to fatigue and heat or cold related illnesses. Thermal comfort is affected by many factors, including air temperature, air movement, floor temperature, humidity, clothing, the amount of physical exertion, average temperature of the surroundings and sun penetration. Optimum comfort for sedentary work is between 20° and 26°C, depending on the time of year and clothing worn. Workers involved in physical exertion usually prefer a lower temperature range. The means of maintaining a comfortable temperature will depend on the working environment and the weather. If it is not possible to eliminate exposure to extreme heat, the risk of heat strain and heat exhaustion must be minimised so far as is reasonably practicable. Immediate assistance should be provided if any worker experiences any of the following symptoms of heat strain: dizziness, fatigue, headache, nausea, breathlessness, clammy skin or difficulty remaining alert. An employee always has the right to refuse unsafe work. If they believe that the degree of heat stress being experienced may be hazardous to the health and safety to themselves or a co-worker, then a work refusal could be initiated.

THINK BIG: THESE FANS DELIVER BIG ENERGY SAVINGS With rising temperatures and soaring energy costs, it is paramount to find an efficient cooling solution that delivers cost savings without compromising on productivity and employee comfort. The obvious answer is a ceiling fan. A ceiling fan is a ceiling fan, right? Well, no, not quite. Big Ass Fans has reinvented the ceiling fan for large industrial, commercial and even residential spaces. Big Ass offers the latest technology in air movement and thermal comfort solutions. Their fans are custom-engineered for quiet operation and energy efficiency. The Big Ass range provides costsaving solutions to manufacturing plants, offices and warehouses. aerofoils at low speed, thus minimising power consumption. Big Ass Fans have as many as ten aerofoils that slowly revolve to create a large yet gentle air movement in all directions. And because they are moving large volumes of air they can create a cooling effect over a large area. High volume, low speed fans have a wide range of applications and are proven in reducing or eliminating the cost of cooling large spaces. With nearly 40 engineers driving innovation and product development, Big Ass Fans owns the world’s only research and development lab. Based in the US, it was built specifically for testing large-diameter fans. At the forefront of research and development in air movement and thermal comfort solutions, Big Ass Fans are now used in more than 80 countries worldwide.

So how do they work? It’s simple. They are able to move larger volumes of air with aerodynamic

HEAVY DUTY AIR CURTAINS FOR THE GREAT OUTDOORS Industrial air movement specialist Fanquip has unveiled a heavy duty Air Curtain specifically designed for either indoors or outdoors. Unlike many others, Fanquip’s Australian-made air curtain is a long-wearing technology that is weather proof and can thus be mounted on an external site wall. This rugged unit is specifically made for harsh installations, such as those above doorways to repair workshops and storerooms commonly operating in the mining, quarry and engineering sectors as well as agricultural and rural businesses. Fanquip Air Curtain is an ideal solution for a dust free working environment that replaces the unreliable option of placing plastic cover strips over doorways. Maintenance on the new Fanquip unit has been reduced by about 80 percent, as only six screws need to be removed from the fascia to gain full access to the mechanics of the unit.

Also, the Fanquip Air Curtain is easier to install than traditional air curtains – and are more cost-effective during operation. The equipment is heavy duty, centrifugal configuration, supplied in galvanised construction. A modular direct drive set-up simplifies the overall system, ensuring there are fewer moving parts to wear out. The typical Fanquip model Air Curtain is constructed and supplied with IP56 moisture protection. Fanquip Ph: 1800 224 308 www.fanquip.com.au

BIG ENERGY SAVINGS USING AGE OLD PRINCIPLES EcoMESH is a unique mesh and water spray system that improves the performance of air cooled chillers, dry coolers and refrigeration plant. The good news is it can reduce your energy consumption by up to 40 percent. EcoMESH has been fitted to units worldwide. Its patented water spray technology has helped companies to reduce their energy intensity without having to resort to significant capital expenditure. And once fitted, it is virtually maintenance free. EcoMESH is based around proven principles that have been known for millennia. The use of water and airflow to cool has been used by ancient Chinese, Roman and Persian societies. Many Australians are familiar with the widespread use of evaporative air conditioning in homes, where water is added to a pad through which air is drawn to reduce the temperature. EcoMESH simply uses water and a ‘smart controller’ to reduce the

temperature of air before it is drawn into the heat rejection coil of an air conditioner. In so doing it reduces the duty to which the air conditioning system is subjected. Lower temperature at input means lower energy costs converting the air to the required temperature. This simple principle is called adiabatic cooling. SBH Solutions is introducing EcoMESH to Australia for the first time. With electricity costs on the rise, investment in an EcoMESH system will see rewards within the same cooling season, with a quick payback period. The system is easy to install, and is sold as a kit to suit the application. Savings are based on your location and the air conditioning or refrigeration system you have installed. EcoMESH does not affect equipment warranties. SBH Solutions 1300 075 638 www.ecomesh.com.au

HOW COOLING CAN INCREASE PRODUCTIVITY The Fanmaster range of cooling and ventilation products are designed for industrial and commercial applications, with the comfort and safety of workers paramount. Lack of productivity in the workplace increases exponentially during the summer months in Australia as temperatures soar. It is not uncommon for some workplaces to hit the 40°C mark. If a heatwave hits, worker productivity levels can drop dramatically – as well as increased stress levels. Studies have found productivity can drop by 20 percent during the summer period. The need for increased ventilation and cooling during these periods is therefore essential. To lessen the impact Fanmaster provides an extensive range of industrial wall and pedestal fans, designed to suit every market. From their small, effective and quiet 450mm range to the largest pedestal and wall range on the market the 850mm, Fanmaster can provide a cooling solution. This season, Fanmaster has also introduced the first in a range of Safety Fans. This includes a 750mm pedestal fan with a high visibility yellow colour,

wide span base and non-slip feet. The 750mm safety fan has a long 5m power cord and integrated wrap, combined with a generous 4800 L/S output. Coupled with its range of Misting Fans and Mancoolers, you can’t go wrong with Fanmaster. And for larger industrial factories, Fanmaster manufacture high quality roof and wall ventilation products. When combined with the airflow from the fan range, this will significantly increase worker comfort. So next time you see your workers struggling in the heat, think about the affect it is having on your business. Fanmaster Ph: 1300 900 345 www.fanmaster.com.au

Oldfields CoverGripTM Drop Cloth

Flexicon FPAS flexible conduit

The Oldfields CoverGrip™ is an ingenious new drop cloth that provides protection, safety and convenience. Manufactured with thousands of tiny, rubberized dots which are firmly attached to the underside of each cloth, once pressure is applied to the drop cloth, the rubber dots grab and hold firm. And because they’re rounded the dots continue to hold, gripping tight even when under a shifting load. The rows of dots enable the Oldfields CoverGrip™ drop cloth to easily fold and conform to surfaces, like stairs, into corners or anywhere they’re needed. Once positioned, they hold and stay in place, so no more exposed surfaces. Although Oldfields CoverGrip™ holds fast, there’s nothing “sticky” about the dots. MARKETING •

INCREASING YOUR ‘NET’ GAINS

By Karl Boothroyd

For B2B organisations seeking qualified lead generation, social media can be a powerful marketing tool that allows you to drive thought-leadership and build credibility around a strong online market position that will engage your target audience. But which social network is the best for B2B marketing? Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google+ and YouTube each offer B2B marketers value, so let’s take a look and see how they stack up. Google+ This is Google’s version of Facebook and has over 350 million active users, so it certainly has reach. And power, because content placed on Google+ can rank highly in the personal search results of your Google+ circles and feature-rich content such as online video ultimately gains more exposure. With Google+ you can also have a business page, which allows people to follow and engage with your business on a personal level and creates opportunities for the relationship development crucial to B2B sales. Another major plus as a B2B social network is the Google+ Hangout real-time video application which allows video conferencing through a webcam. It’s a quick and easy way to keep business professionals talking on Google+ and sessions can be published directly to YouTube. Being a Google product, Google+ will doubtless be integrated into developing applications supporting content marketing and organic search – such ‘social signals’ are pure gold for any B2B marketer.

LinkedIn Created to facilitate and develop business relationships and now boasting 225 million active users, LinkedIn is the ultimate social networking tool for business professionals. The most compelling feature of LinkedIn for B2B is the ability to view professional details of target prospects and determine appropriate introductions. Paid features like Lead Builder and Profile Organiser also offer valuable CRM capabilities and on a company level LinkedIn enables on-on-one engagement plus networking in Groups and in the context of comments and status engagement. Opportunities as a marketing tool include personal branding for executives, sales development for business development professionals and marketing opportunities via targeted, real-time lead generating advertising. Additionally, a marketer can run targeted ads by location, industry, title, company and other specific demographics and ads can capture leads on the fly. However, LinkedIn networking and marketing doesn’t necessarily work on its own; it’s crucial to take your relationships offline, whether on the phone or in person, to close the deal. Twitter For busy business professionals, marketers and CEOs, Twitter is the easiest way to get a message out, enabling quick information output that links back to important conversion sites such as your website and blog. The mobile app for Twitter and ability to tweet 24/7makes Twitter the place

where news breaks and where real-time conversations happen and also makes it a great place for B2B marketers to find and engage with targeted media. Twitter is also the best social media tool for covering and marketing the conferences, workshops and seminars that are crucial to the success of any B2B organisation these days. On the downside, any article shared on Twitter will rank lower in organic Google results than it would on Google+ and while Twitter makes it easy to reach out to others it doesn’t guarantee a reply, with followers less ‘substantial’ than welldeveloped LinkedIn connections. YouTube Online video, done correctly with the brand top-of-mind and well planned for target engagement, should be a crucial component of any online marketer’s social media program. YouTube, as a Google product and video-serving platform, is an opportunity for B2B social networking because compelling videos, when shared appropriately, can certainly drive qualified inbound leads. YouTube video links can also be embedded and shared on websites such as SlideShare, another valuable B2B online marketing tool. These videos can then become visible to target connections on important B2B social networking sites including Google+, LinkedIn and Twitter. As a standalone B2B social network, however, YouTube doesn’t really offer lead capture or strong relationship development. Facebook Facebook is certainly the number one

B2C social media network. As a B2B social media tool, Facebook primarily serves to convey information about client services, online promotions and event announcements. At the same time it does offer B2B organisations the ability to gain opt-ins for e-mail marketing on a business page. However, B2B marketers who turn to Facebook as a social media tool will need to heavily engage in target and organisational groups and pages to get the most out of Facebook as a marketing tool. The best B2B social network. LinkedIn is the best social network for B2B marketing, being the only one that was developed purely to enable direct sales relationships for B2B marketers. Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and YouTube should also be in the toolbox of any serious B2B marketer, but if you have limited time and resources and want to increase your bottom line, invest wholly in LinkedIn. *Karl Boothroyd is the founder and CEO of IMA, a specialist B2B marketing agency. CUSTOMER SERVICE THE NEW MARKETING

By Mitchell Mackey

Marketing used to be the art of communicating a brand message about your product or service to, hopefully, the right audience at the right time and place. However, today, whilst the business of crafting a brand hasn’t gone away, marketing is now a ubiquitous 360-degree game focused on the quality and relevance of the customer experience. In our social media world there’s no value in communicating a blue sky brand promise, but delivering thunder and lightning thanks to ad hoc internal disconnections. Leading analysts say there is a powerful correlation between customer ratings of

“useful,” “easy,” and “enjoyable” and their loyalty If customers find a product or service useful, usable, and enjoyable, they will want to buy it again, and are less likely to switch to a competitor. Simple words aren’t they, useful, usable and enjoyable? However, few companies deliver. Customer experience guru Bruce Temkin of the Temkin Group sums up the challenge: “No matter how much money you spend on advertising, you can’t convince customers that you provide better experiences than you do. It’s amazing how

little discipline companies have in their approach to customer experience while at the same time acknowledging it as both critical and broken.” Regardless if you are a small metal fabricator in the outer suburbs or are a big league multinational, your goal must be to deliver and sustain differentiated experiences that nurture loyalty. The quality of your product or service is simply the price of entry into the race. Today any technical differentiation is highly unlikely to be sustained for long. Therefore, authentic brands must be more than just marketing slogans.

Of course the basics – training, technology and processes etc – must be synchronized. The core focus has to be on your management culture and organisational health. And whilst efficiency is vital, it is does not necessarily mean that your customer experience is effective. An experience is not effective unless it is remembered, branded and contrasted. For more insight into the changing world of marketing you can subscribe to Mitchell’s blog: Disrupting the Marketing Game at www.mitchellmackey.com.au

EMPLOYERS SLAM APPRENTICE WAGE RISES The Fair Work Commission's decision to substantially increase the wages of new apprentices has been welcomed by unions and slammed by employers. The decision, handed down last week by the Fair Work Commission doubles pay rates for some apprentices employed in a number of trades. The Commission maintains increased apprentice wages are of benefit for both apprentices and employees. But business groups said trades such as building, plumbing and electrics would be hurt by the increases, as well as hairdressers and butchers and bakers employed on retail awards. Australian Industry Group chief executive Innes Willox said manufacturing would be affected. First-year wages for an apprentice who has finished year 12 will rise by $31 a week to $398.50 and $44.13 to $470.93 for second year apprentices. The pay rises will be brought in over two years, with the wage of a

first-year apprentice electrician who has completed year 12 jumping from $289 to $398 a week. A first-year adult apprentice electrician, aged over 21 when starting their trade, will double from $289 to $579 a week. Although not due to come into force until January 1, 2014, and due to be phased in over a year, “there is a risk that the higher rates will have negative employment effects”, Mr Willox said. “Hopefully the big increases which will apply to first and second year apprentice wage rates from next year will not impact on apprentice numbers which are already under pressure." To lessen the burden on employers, the increase will only apply to apprentices who start training next year and not the 515,000 apprentices currently in training. Employers will be able to pay the increases in two instalments, on January 2014 and from January 2015. Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry employment and training

director Jenny Lambert said the decision was further evidence the industrial relations system had swung too far in favour of unions. Master Builders Australia chief executive Wilhelm Harnisch said pay rates for new first and second-year apprentices would rise 20 per cent, “locking thousands of young Australians out of rewarding careers . . . over the next decade.” However the union movement has welcomed the decision. ACTU secretary Dave Oliver said the increases were a great outcome for apprentices and the broader economy. “Current wages see apprentices barely able to meet living costs; they are considerably less than other job options and barely more than the Newstart allowance,” he said. The decision would result in more people completing vocational training and boost the skill level of Australia's workforce.

Electrical Trades Union (ETU) secretary Allen Hicks says research has identified low pay rates as a major contributor to low retention rates, resulting in 40 per cent of apprentices failing to complete their training. “When a first year apprentice is earning just over half the pay of a workers at a fast-food restaurant, there’s no surprise that many are forced to drop out of their training,” Mr Hicks said. Mr Hicks said the pay decision is wonderful news for existing apprentices, or anyone considering entering a trade.

EDUCATION, TRAINING & APPRENTICES •

Brought to you by

FIVE REASONS TO CHOOSE APPRENTICE GROUP TRAINING By Nick Couper for their next step into a career. We do this through career days, guest speaking, mock interviews, work experience capabilities, and a fantastic program called “Try-A-Skill.” • At the forefront of workplace safety Safety is a vital part of doing business. Safety matters, safety saves money and, more importantly, safety saves lives. Though I have listed this as point five it does not mean it is any less important. I want this to be the last point read so it will be remembered first.

Group Training excels in the employment of apprenticeships and traineeships. There are many benefits of using Group Training, but here are five excellent reasons: • Apprentice management The most important person in any apprenticeship is the apprentice or trainee. They are the reason why we are all working together in the first place – host companies, Group Training Organisations (GTOs), Registered Training Organisations (RTOs), schools and parents. Group Training provides a combination of safety nets to apprentices and trainees through various methods, including the advantage of having just the one employer and being able to choose from a vast choice of industries.

• Providing a human resource function to companies A Group Training Organisation holds the contractual employment obligations when employing an apprentice or trainee. It covers all aspects of the employment needs and services that many companies, whether small or global organisations, may not have time to do. A national Group Training organisation like MIGAS, the largest employer of apprentices and trainees, does all the coordination. It will do all the running around to manage your apprentice, so you can focus on what you do best – running your business. • Group Training Organisations act as a monitoring service We constantly field questions from

mums and dads regarding this industry and how it fits in. It is after we talk our way through the two above points that parents often comment that they are happy companies like MIGAS exist. They feel secure that they have an external party looking out for their son or daughter. • Group Training is knowledgeable in a wide range of industries During the cycle of an apprenticeship and traineeship we also offer schools a great service. With the diversity of industries we employ in and the large geographical areas we cover, we can offer a range of advice and opportunities for students. Basically give MIGAS a date, a topic and an audience, and we can talk to students on making the right choice

Our dedicated and coordinated teams are at the cutting edge of safety, constantly reviewing and updating our needs for equipment and processes to maintain the best possible standards. MIGAS receives the latest information and, with our industry partners that have the same safety culture, we ensure all measures are in place so your sons and daughters get home safely. A DRUM BUND IS MORE THAN JUST A PIECE OF PLASTIC Ensure that the bund is made from an appropriate material 100 percent polyethylene bunds are themost suitable for our climate and the rough and tough treatment they encounter. An increasing trend in an attempt to lower production costs is to use foaming agents, which lower the amount of polypropylene used to make the bund. The result is substantially reduced impact strength and a much more brittle product which will crack or chip very easily with even the slightest knock.

An increasing number of quality issues associated with drum bunds, IBC bunds and spill pallets are catching unsuspecting buyers off guard. When bunds do not meet basic strength and UV resistance standards required for Australia’s harsh conditions and tough work environments, the potential for an oil or chemical spill escalates dramatically. With quality and fit-for-purpose in mind, the following guidelines will help you find the best drum bund or spill pallet to ensure your workplace is incident free:

Ensure the material used to make the bund is UV Stabilised and of a suitable colour It would be unlikely the raw material used to make a bund would not have a UV stabiliser added. However, the more carbon contained in the material the better the UV stability. Black material is by far the best colour to make a bund as it has a much higher carbon content than any other colour.

Check where the product is made Many products sold in Australia are from overseas manufacturers, some of which are not suitable for Australian conditions. Is the product Australian Made? Make sure the manufacturer is experienced, has a long history of manufacturing these products and does not cut corners.

The pigments added to natural polyethylene to create colours often require additional chemicals to stabilise the colour. Some colour stabilisers such as phthalocyanine cause stress and distortion in the material, which results in collapsed bunds. Blue and Green pigments generally require more colour stabilisation than do other colours. Check the weight of your bund As a general guide, heavier bunds are stronger as they contain more plastic Check that your bund has been tested for structural and weight bearing characteristics A good quality bund will have been tested in a NATA accredited lab. The UDL (Uniformly Distributed Load) should be readily available. Check that your bund contains no less than 110 percent of the largest container on the bund Bunds made to Australian Standards require the bund contain 110 percent of the largest container held on the bund. If the bund is undersized for the container, place the container on a larger capacity bund. For example a 1000L IBC will fit on a 4 drum bund which is only designed to contain approximately 220L being 110 percent of a 200L drum. The IBC should be placed on a bund capable of containing a minimum of 1100L. Check the compatibility of the bund and the liquid being stored Typically, 100 percent polyethylene is compatible with most oils, fuel and industrial chemicals Check if your spill pallets can be aggregated to form a large work platform To create a large platform from a number of bunds they must be able to

36

industryupdate.com.au

be securely locked together for strength and to aggregate the containment capacity to meet the 110 percent largest container requirement. Only buy ancillary equipment (e.g. bund covers, filter bags) that has been matched to the bund For example, a bund cover is designed to neatly fit over a bund holding drums and partly down the sides so that the bund will not fill with water when it rains. In cases where it is a matter of quality over price, it is rarely a good idea to choose the cheapest option as this could very well cause rain to fill the bund with a loss of containment capacity. Global Spill Control supplies a comprehensive range of environmental products, including drum bunds (Bunded Spill Pallets) and Bulk Container Bunds (IBC Bunds). These are important for maintaining a safe workplace, and for ensuring you meet EPA regulations. Global Spill Control drum bunds can come in a 4 Drum Bund, 2 Drum Bund, 3 Drum Bund, 6 Drum Bund, 8 Drum Bund and a Bulk Container Bund or an IBC Bund. Both Low Profile Drum Bunds (Bunded Spill Pallets) and Standard Drum Bunds are also available. A proud Australian Made supplier, Global has offices in Melbourne, Sydney, Tuggerah (NSW), Brisbane, Townsville, Adelaide, Burnie (TAS) and Perth as well as a large network of distributors and resellers throughout Australia and New Zealand. BEHIND AUTOMATION: HOW INDUSTRIAL NETWORKING ELEVATES PLC FUNCTIONALITY

How to improve production quality and reduce operating costs By Cameron Dwyer – Managing Director of TURCK Australia The days where manpower served as the brain and brawn in manufacturing are long gone – human-machine interaction has become commonplace on the factory floor. One prime example of this is the Programmable Logic Controller (PLC), which has been taking on the role of the workhorse in automation and manufacturing industries across the board. By interfacing with everything from sensors and machine guards to motion control devices, PLCs ensure operations run smoothly. Through the flexibility offered with PLCs, manufacturers can manage multiple machines at once, achieving a higher level of integration and process automation machines and improving production quality and cost of operation. The benefits of the PLC are well known with their contribution towards efficiency enhancement and the behind the scenes support of industrial Ethernet, making this heightened control possible. Together, these technologies make communication between man and machine a seamless, profitable combination. Consisting of various protocols, industrial Ethernet was developed with deterministic capabilities to provide a cost-efficient alternative to legacy automation systems. With the advanced capabilities, sophisticated functionality and simplistic installation, PLCs are a cornerstone of modern manufacturing. However, to effectively utilize these devices, users must understand the crucial role

networking plays and the individual requirements that must be considered for an effective solution. Together, they form a unified infrastructure that can extend from the administrative to the control- and floorlevel networking that offers inherent scalability to continue to meet growing industry demands. PLC technology breakdown Since their inception, PLCs have become a keystone of industrial automation, often serving as a vital link between human and machine. As control architecture continues shifting and network technology keeps advancing, these changes support integrated HMI-PLCs that leverage an established and portable programming environment. As a universal controller, PLCs can be programmed to perform a variety of tasks, from switching on and off a motor to mathematical computing operations, through its memory input. With the processing power, data storage and communication capabilities of today’s modern computers, PLCs offer an intelligent, rugged solution that offers field-level application control. PLCs are designed to act as miniature computers that can deliver reliable operation in a variety of challenging environments, such as extreme temperatures, electrical noise, vibration and shock. During operation, PLCs read data from devices and equipment they are connected to. Utilizing input interfaces, PLCs perform the control program that was stored through user-defined parameters. Typically, these programs are created in ladder logic, which is a language that closely resembles a relay-based wiring schematic. Finally, based on the program, the PLC "writes", or updates output devices via the output interfaces. This process, also known as scanning, continues in the same sequence without interruption, and changes only when a change is made to the control program. PLC advantages Implementing PLCs offer numerous performance and benefits, such as reduced hardware requirements, increased efficiencies and less waste. With today’s technology, PLCs are highly customized

solutions that can be tailored to individual control applications, while consuming less real estate on the factory floor. As a built-in controller, PLCs offer a simplified installation that utilizes less cabinet space to free up valuable space. Further, its visual display offers unparalleled opportunities for machine/ operator interaction that increases production efficiency with display instructions for machine operators and data entry that can provide alarm monitoring or recipe management via an easy-to-use interface. Designed for easy maintenance and troubleshooting, repairs are reduced to simply replacing modular, plug-in components. The likelihood of faults and the time needed to fix these errors is significantly reduced, eliminating the need to rewire panels and devices. Now, errors can be corrected by retyping the logic. Additionally, fault detection circuits and diagnostic indicators, incorporated in each major component, can tell whether the component is working properly. With the programming tool, any programmed logic can be viewed to see if input or outputs are on or off. Expanding PLC functionality with networking Though PLCs opened the door for onthe-floor visual communication, it was their integration with networking devices that offered manufacturers a whole new level of visibility and control by combining realtime Ethernet with visualization, control and communication capabilities. To meet the growing operation needs of industrial automation, networks continue to expand, offering monitoring and control capabilities in areas not previously possible. Device networks are now utilizing fieldbus-to-Ethernet integration to develop enterprise-wide control networks. Merging networking functionality with PLCs enables users to off-load main processor tasks for distributed control in the field, placing control-level devices closer to the action. Additionally, by combining control with distributed I/O, manufacturers lower their total cost of operation by streamlining data acquisition, communication and factory-wide connectivity.

Networking First and foremost, in order for PLCs become a networking tool, users must have the necessary bandwidth that allows realime industrial Ethernet. Since connection and communication requirements are expanding, PLCs are required to increase support for multiple network technologies. While there is no “one size fits all” industrial network for all of the advanced I/O solutions, by accommodating multiple protocols, PLCs can connect the enterprise layer to the plant for as needed. Since network protocols add functionality, PLCs are a necessary component to drive and support these additional functions. One key component to ensuring these integrated system continue functioning, is maintaining the industrial automation networks. A reliable network is paramount; therefore, maintaining network availability is crucial. This requires the system to support the necessary bandwidth and high data transmission rates to meet application specifications, as well as data protection during maintenance operations and fast recoveries post connection failure. Along with speed and availability, redundancy is important for continued performance and reliability. As prolonged periods of unplanned system downtime can become a potential threat to plant productivity, redundancy technologies not only provide millisecond-level network recovery, but they can also substantially reduce costs for deployment. Distributed control Using distributed control allows parts of the automated system to be decentralized and dispersed through the system. This means that certain portions of the system are be controlled via separate controllers that are located close to the area of direct control. This allows multiple different form factors for a wide variety of application requirements. Further, by spreading the I/O data across the application as appropriate (either in-cabinet or onmachine), manufacturers are able to reduce their footprint and the number of components necessary, and ultimately, provide the most cost effective solution. Distributed control enables users to implement a flexible modular design with the exact amount of I/O expansion to

be added when necessary, providing an inherent scalability for fast, cost-effective updates for future expansion. Distributed intelligence reduces any additional load on the PLC, and also allows the system to accommodate future functional requirements—enabling expansion while still using the same PLC to control automated applications. This means users can enrich their systems by expanding the size and functional capabilities, and still be standardized on PLC systems. During off-loading, some of the control functions from the main processor (either PLC or PC-control) to the distributed I/O, which are located either on-machine or in-cabinet, reduce network traffic. This occurs because through the distributed I/O, the main processor does not need to ‘make requests’ of the remote I/O for status of inputs or to initiate an output, as the distributed I/O system with control/ programmable functionality can handle certain tasks, relegating communications to supervisory or status data to the main processor. By enabling remote I/O configurations, manufacturers can achieve high-level connectivity with only a few I/O points required—even in widespread areas— providing a cost-effective control solution for diverse industries and applications. In large facilities where extensive monitoring and control is necessary, it is not practical or cost-efficient to have a controller at each site. This would require a tedious and expensive installation process that would require each I/O point to be hardwired with cable running over long distances. For example, remote I/O systems can be used in acquiring data from remote plant or facility locations. Information such as cycle times, counts, duration or events, etc. then can be sent back to the PLC for maintenance and management reporting. Additionally, hardwiring increases the likelihood of errors, such as mis-wiring, which can cause excessive downtime to correct. Advanced I/O capabilities Networking technology has expanded beyond standard DI, DO, AI, AO to advanced I/O such as identification technologies like RFID, SSID for motion and serial inputs, for example, for datalogging or barcode/2D matrix identification systems. Smarter, more advanced I/O produces greater amounts of data and higher-lever diagnostics that integrated PLCs must be able to deal manage. Now, typical factory environments are looking for tighter control of their manufacturing process, which results in a need for more than discrete I/O. This means that PLCs are experiencing more bandwidth consuming advanced I/O types like analog, temperature and RFID.

For example, PROFINET uses three different communication channels to exchange data with Programmable Controllers and other devices. The standard TCP/IP channel is used for parameterization, configuration and acyclic read/write operations. The Real Time (RT channel is used for standard cyclic data transfer and alarms. RT communications bypass the standard TCP/IP interface to expedite the data exchange with Programmable Controllers. The third channel, Isochronous Real Time (IRT), is the high-speed channel used for motion control applications. Combing Networking and PLCs in the Field Remote I/O Dealing with hazardous work environments, the oil and gas industry depends on precision and reliability. For an application that not only needs dependable performance, but also must adapt to changing requirements and increasing demands, traditional control solutions are not ideal, and instead require an modular solution that enables disassembly and transportation. For oil and gas industries, it is essential to utilize innovative connectivity solutions that allow for communication across great distances without sacrificing performance or being susceptible to environmental elements. These demands require a reliable marriage of control devices, such as PLCs, and networking protocols. With these plants, the challenge is overcoming the widespread design of the facility, which requires the network to accommodate a large number of signals and still reduce the wiring footprint while maintaining spare floor capacity. Utilizing distributed I/O systems that feature a hazardous area quick disconnect wiring system provides a cost-effective answer to a complex problem. The easy-toconfigure systems deliver remote I/O functionality for processing applications. A single Ethernet cable is capable of handling high traffic volume, transferring as many

as 150 signals back to the PLC from the various remote sections of the plant. Using a sophisticated connector system to terminate to process instruments in the field consolidates those signals at a junction box for enhanced efficiency. Further, by implementing twisted shielded pair cables for signal transfer from the junction blocks to the PLC cabinet, and armored single twisted pair cables to connect the junction block to the instruments. There is no longer the need to run all the cables back to the PLC individually, but instead what used to be eight wires has been combined into one single cable. Because of the small size of the home run cable receptacles, the size of the PLC cabinet, where all the signals eventually terminate was also reduced, this results in an additional cost saving. Additionally, to meet the individual needs of the oil and gas market and their hazardous locations these devices must be mounted. Options are available that include Ethernet protocols with Division 2/Zone 2 approval, consolidating the temperature, 4-20mA and discrete signals and send them at high speeds to the PLC. Enhanced automation In a coal production plant, there are extensive transportation systems that run through the entire facility in order to transport the coal from its repository to the coal mills. This transport system must be reliable at all times in order to promote continued plant productivity. Due to this, automation is an obvious choice, but this requires countless sensors and actuators to be installed through the factory that must be managed and maintained. In order to meet these specific demands, utilizing a modern fieldbus system for the signal transmission between the PLC and sensors/actuators can provide the level of automation, control and durability necessary. Implementing a proper fieldbus system, one that features a modular design and offers rugged protection, will not only provide interference-free communication

between all devices involved, but also a high degree of data integrity, protection against vibration and extensive diagnostic functionality. In a coal plant that incorporates two transport stations, two coal mills and a coal bunker from which the coal dust is blown into the burning kilns. Between these stations, the coal is transported through multiple conveyor belts, so it crucial to keep detailed records as the product moves though the various steps. Each conveyor belt features its own control cabinet that incorporates connectors, motor-circuit switches and the distributed I/O. The modular I/O stations transfer all the analog and digital signals to higher level PLCs that reflect the transport system’s status, such as rate of feed, offset, distension, cracks or fill level data, through a networking protocol, such as DeviceNet, After evaluating the obtained data, the PLC submits the plant’s status to the management information system (MIS). All this control can be implemented with just two fieldbus networks. Manufacturers are assured continuous transportation of coal, with the reliable, efficient and flexible fieldbus technology that provides error-proof combustible production. Using a n IP67-rated fieldbus system, this solution meets the high demands of the coal production industry, with simple maintenance and fast diagnostics, combined with easy and error free installation and low wiring costs — ultimately, ensuring the efficient and safe plant operation necessary, even in harsh environments. Conclusion No two manufacturing environments are the same, but share the common drive to produce a high quality product while maximizing efficiency, productivity and profitability. The integration of control devices like PLCs and enterprise networking capabilities offers up a proactive strategy for achieving these objectives.

AUSTRALIAN MADE CAMPAIGN GROWS IN QLD The Australian Made Campaign is now in Queensland, to provide the Queensland business community with access to a local resource for information about the Australian Made, Australian Grown (AMAG) logo. An Australian Made Campaign representative, Matt Roberts, has been appointed to the Chamber of Commerce and Industry Queensland (CCIQ). Matt Roberts is working with CCIQ to help educate manufacturers and growers of genuine Australian products about the benefits of leveraging country-of-origin as a marketing tool. The iconic green-and-gold AMAG logo is the only registered certification trademark for Australian country-of-origin claims. “The Australian Made Campaign is proud to be working with CCIQ to make the Australian Made, Australian Grown logo

more accessible to Queensland businesses,” Australian Made Chief Executive, Ian Harrison said. CCIQ CEO Stephen Tait said: “As a foundation member of the Australian Made Campaign we are delighted to be supporting the initiative in Queensland. The Australian Made Campaign helps drive recognition and awareness of the fantastic products made, grown and produced across Queensland.” Used by more than 1800 companies on more than 10,000 products sold here and around the world, research shows it is the AMAG logo that gives the vast majority (88 percent) of Australian consumers strong confidence that a product is Australian. Call 1300 731 988, or email matt.roberts@ australianmade.com.au to learn more.

DOES YOUR BUSINESS QUALIFY? To proudly display the iconic Aussie Made symbol on your products your company must meet the following criteria: • Australian Made: The product has been made in Australia and over 50 per cent of the cost of production cost has been incurred in Australia. • Australian Grown: All significant ingredients are grown in Australia and almost all processing carried out in Australia. • Product of Australia: All of the product’s significant ingredients come from Australia and almost all

GOVERNMENT URGED TO SUPPORT COUNTRY-OF-ORIGIN BRANDING The Australian Made Campaign has called on the Federal Government to strongly support country-of-origin branding. “The Australian brand is one of the most powerful assets available to our businesses in global markets, but unfortunately the value of this seems to have been consistently underestimated in government and bureaucratic circles for many years,” Australian Made Campaign Chief Executive, Ian Harrison, said. “A stronger focus on country-of-origin branding using Australia’s registered country-of-origin trade mark – the Australian Made, Australian Grown logo –

would help support manufacturers, farmers and processors producing genuine Aussie products.” The iconic green-and-gold kangaroo logo has been used by thousands of businesses to identify genuine Australian products and produce, in Australia and overseas, for nearly three decades. “In an environment where increased costs and a high $AUD have seriously undermined the competitiveness of many Australian products, country-of-origin is an asset we should be driving much, much harder,” Mr Harrison said. “There is more than enough public

benefit associated with the Australian Made, Australian Grown logo to justify a much deeper, strategic partnership between the Government and the campaign behind the logo.” Australian Made has also called for steps to reduce the unacceptable level of confusion among Australian consumers about the country-of-origin labeling laws in Australia. “It’s important that we rebuild confidence in the system and add marketing value to the manufacturing, growing and processing of products in this country,” Mr Harrison said.

CONSUMERS CARE ABOUT BUYING LOCAL: NEW RESEARCH Buying Australian-made products has become more important to Australian consumers, according to new research. The research from Roy Morgan, commissioned by the Australian Made Campaign, found consumers regularly buy local – even if it comes at a cost. More than half of the respondents surveyed (55 percent) said that buying Australian-made had become more

40

important to them in the last 12 months. Only 12 per cent of respondents said they would not buy Australian products if they were more expensive. The results are encouraging, says Australian Made Campaign Chief Executive, Ian Harrison. “The research confirms that people are becoming more conscientious about buying local. They are aware of the benefits of buying Aussie products, and of

the impact that their purchasing behaviour has on jobs, local business and future opportunities,” Mr Harrison said. Australia’s unemployment rate rose from 5.3 percent in July 2012 to 5.7 percent in July 2013 and it is projected to rise further. “Concern is mounting over job prospects in this country, but research like this indicates a proactive effort by consumers to turn things around.”

Ian Harrison … ‘commitment’

“We are lobbying the Government to work together with us on this.” “Jobs, better career opportunities and an improved future for all Australians will be the outcomes of such a partnership,” Mr Harrison said.

The Australian Made Campaign recently launched its new website, www. australianmade.com.au, to help consumers find genuine Australian products and produce. Featuring more than 10,000 products from thousands of Australian manufacturers, processors and producers, the Australian Made website enables consumers to quickly and easily find locally made, grown or caught products. BEWARE: DOES YOUR STEEL STORAGE SYSTEM COMPLY? Manufacturers who buy imported steel storage products that do not conform to strict Australian safety standards could face legal action or exposure to health and safety risks. This warning comes from the Australian Steel Storage Manufacturers Group (the Group) which has expressed concern at the growing amount of “noncompliant,

Safe option … Australian made high density, narrow-aisle pallet racking installation.

uncertified and untested” steel storage products now available in Australia. An initiative of the Australian Steel Institute (the ASI), the Group was formed in 2010 by leading manufacturers Dexion, Dematic, Macrack, Commando and APC. The Work Health and Safety Act 2011 (WHS) places significant shared responsibility on all stakeholders in operating in construction steelwork, specifically naming managers, designers, manufacturers, importers, suppliers and installers. The Act and its linkage to compliance of steel storage products have been firmly established through a “Questions answered” document prepared by the ASI in collaboration with Workplace Health and Safety Queensland. The document can be downloaded free from the ASI website: http://steel.org.au/key-issues/compliance/ whs-2011/ It also provides further resources on the compliance initiatives undertaken by the ASI. Establishing product compliance is a duty of care that must be addressed, says the ASI. Dexion’s CEO and chairman of the Group, Peter Farmakis says it is difficult for buyers to trace the material used and the manufacturing methods adopted by internationally procured steel products. Such products are beyond the reach of Australia’s legal and regulatory framework. “The Australian manufacturing market is mature. It’s one that’s established a high-level of quality over many years, so that customers are insured against unsafe, non-compliant products by the very fact that they are purchasing locally manufactured products from within a strict WHS compliance regime,” said Farmakis. The Group warns that accountability is lost when steel manufacturing is taken offshore and it’s both the procurer and the supplier who bear the repercussions of non-compliance in Australia. It’s not uncommon for international suppliers to claim they’re meeting the standards when in fact they’re not. “The Group’s primary objective is to ensure the health and safety of Australian businesses, Farmakis said.

42

industryupdate.com.au

“Mitigating potential risks is paramount to the work we do, so we aim to raise awareness within the steel community of the issues associated with imports.” According to the ASI, a number of major Australian steel projects have recently reported quality concerns and even fraudulent importer behaviour (such as falsified test certificates). The ASI’s national manager and manager of the Group, Ian Cairns acknowledges this growing trend. “Over the past five years, the ASI has seen an increase in the number of complaints in relation to non-compliant imported steel products. “In particular, we are seeing a trend towards businesses procuring material such as steel plates, structural sections and metal castings from outside of Australia that are often found to have some issues in meeting local specifications,” said Cairns. Accordingly, the Group works towards ensuring that all steel storage products and installations comply with an increasingly tight compliance regime. Maintaining Australia’s capability in the efficient design, safety, and supply and construction of steel storage structures are the key objectives of the Group. Collaborating closely with key industry stakeholders, the Group assists businesses meet the requirements of Australian laws and regulations. Some of the recent initiatives undertaken by the Group in collaboration with other key industry stakeholders include: • WorkSafe Victoria’s pallet racking operation and maintenance guidance notes developed on the advice of the Group • The ASI’s code of practice for rack safety inspection Initiatives such as these are designed to increase safety awareness and assist companies better meet Australia’s (rightly) rigid standards. However, it is incumbent on the procuring business to inform itself of these (often changing) laws and regulations, and to understand their implications. Knowledge is implied and ignorance will not protect against the law. Australian Steel Institute www.steel.org.au

WHEN Respirators CAN LET YOU DOWN Workers involved in “fracking” are being exposed to levels of carcinogenic silica up to 10 times the US recommended limit, a study has found. The US study of worker exposures during hydraulic fracturing (fracking) operations found that the most commonly used type of respirator, the half-mask air-purifying respirator, might not provide enough protection for workers. Fracking, or hydraulic fracturing, is the process of extracting natural gas from shale rock layers deep within the earth. US researchers examined worker exposure to crystalline silica during directional drilling and fracking operations, a process to access oil or gas captured in rock.

44

industryupdate.com.au

“Certain work in this industry requires employees to be in areas where respirable silica levels may exceed defined occupational exposure limits like the OSHA Permissible Exposure Limit or the NIOSH Recommended Exposure Limits [RELs],” said researcher Michael Breitenstein. “Our study found in some cases, full shift personal breathing zone exposures exceeded 10 times the REL.” Co-author Eric J Esswein added: “Although half-mask, air-purifying respirators are most commonly used at hydraulic fracturing sites, due to the magnitude of the silica concentrations measured, half-masks might not be sufficiently protective. In some cases, silica concentrations exceeded the maximum use concentration for that type of respirator.”

CUT INJURIES SLASHED WITH ANSELL SAFETY GLOVES For more than 60 years, West Australian manufacturer Kounis Metal Industries has been supplying sheet metal products for mining and commercial construction projects. Central to the company’s success has been the special emphasis it places on safety. “Occupational Health and Safety is integral to our vision and values,” said safety consultant for Kounis, Jennifer Butler. “We have more than 150 operators working in fabrication and electrical assembly, and in the fit shops, paint shop, despatch and transport areas – so safety is always our top priority,” says Ms Butler. “We work with sharp objects and hazardous substances so protection against cut and piercing injuries and chemical exposure is critical.” Ms Butler says choosing the correct personal protective equipment (PPE) for each task is essential. “We’re grateful for the guidance provided by Ansell in this area, she says. “They have a huge range of safety gloves to choose from and they help us identify the type of protection we need for each task.”

This collaborative approach has led to a 50 percent reduction in cut injuries. “When it comes to safety, sometimes you only get one chance and we would rather be proactive than reactive”, she added. “We have managed to halve our injury rate simply by choosing the correct glove for each task.” Ms Butler found the Ansell HyFlex 11624 is ideal for warehouse work. It offers advanced (ANSI 2) cut resistance for handling sharp objects, and provides a bare-hand like sensation for workers operating machinery and equipment. The tight fit is essential for avoiding entanglement within machine areas. The excellent dexterity, comfort and breathability also mean operators don’t sweat in the gloves so there are no dermatitis issues. “We chose the Ansell ChemTek 38-514 for weld cure as it provides the best resistance to the most aggressive chemicals without compromising dexterity or comfort, said Ms Butler. “It also has that extra-long length hand protection and less

risk of allergies due to the absence of latex. We also use Ansell’s AlphaTec 58-530 and AlphaTec 58-535 for superior grip and chemical resistance, especially on oily surfaces.” The company says it uses Ansell’s ActivArmr 97-001 Electrician Gloves in electrical assembly areas because it provides full protection against wire punctures, cuts and abrasions. “Our electrical teams spend hours wiring units so they need a bare-handed feel,” Ms Butler explained. “The gloves have an adjustable wrist closure for comfort as well as an ID nameplate, which is good for hygiene.” Kounis Metal Industries conducted glove trials on site with the various brands across all PPE. “We also came up with a photobased matrix to help workers, supervisors and managers quickly pinpoint the appropriate PPE for each task, and to easily understand how to use each item, Ms Butler said. “Visual displays are more meaningful than theory. They save

WORKERS URGED TO GET MORE SUNLIGHT body’s ability to absorb calcium. A diet deficient in calcium can lead to osteoporosis in later life. One in three Australian adults are vitamin D deficient and over a million people suffer with osteoporosis nationwide. Office workers are encouraged to “take a D-Break” and step outside for their required dose of daily sunlight to achieve optimal Vitamin D levels. Rather than having lunch at the desk, workers should consider an outdoor café. And team meetings can be held outdoors whenever possible.

The large number of forklift related injuries within Australian warehouses each year, enforces the importance of safety when operating these powerful machines. Adaptalift Hyster’s ForkTrack Safety System delivers a solution to common causes of forklift accidents, helping to improve safety in the warehouse. Features within ForkTrack such as the Digital Weight Indicator and Lift/Tilt Lockout assist in preventing accidents caused by overloading the forklift. Such safety features provide operators with overload warnings, delivering control of mast movements when a forklift is nearing its rated capacity. Further, other causes of accidents, such as speeding and improper parking, can be prevented through Speed Zoning and Handbrake Control. And ForkTrack’s Seatbelt Interlock feature ensures that operators wear

While the sun's UV rays are a hazard to outdoor workers too many Australians, who spend all their working day indoors, are not getting enough Vitamin D. The first National Vitamin D Awareness Day was held earlier this year aimed at raising awareness about vitamin D deficiency in Australia. According to research by vitamin supplement provider Ostelin, more than half (54 percent) of the Australian workforce stays indoors all day during winter. And one in five of those workers leave for work or home when it is still dark. Research shows that low Vitamin D is linked to reduced employee work productivity. It’s also associated with some minor conditions that can result in “presenteeism” where employees are present at work, yet demonstrate reduced productivity or performance due to not feeling well. Insufficient sun exposure and low vitamin D can adversely affect your

HOSE HANDLING INJURIES ARE A ‘REEL’ CONCERN Industrial hoses are a common cause of workplace injuries and strains. The root of the problem, more often than not, can be attributed to the non-use of a reel to safely operate and store them. The mining sector, dockyards, engineering sites, the energy industry, construction and building sites, food manufacturing – just about any heavy industry – often sees payouts for employees hurt in activity that would not be a problem if hose reels are being used. Mr Michael Pawson, Managing Director of ReCoila, an Australian company specialising in manufacture

and supply of industrial hose reels across the industry spectrum, says the potential problems are so obvious to the trained eye and so preventable. “The problem with industrial hoses on worksites is that management often ignores this sort of equipment, often assuming that a hose has little or no chance of leading to a workplace injury,” says Mr Pawson. “But the problem is you have a bulky item that is often a lot heavier than it looks, so people always try to move it manually and this is leading to back strains and spinal injuries, rotator cuff problems on shoulders and general arm injuries.

“The fact that hoses are often naively left dormant, snaking around the feet of workers for convenience-of-use also creates danger, and when you look at industries such as mines, quarries, docks and foundries, slips and falls can be very serious. “The key step to solving this workplace menace is simple: the installation of hoses on appropriate reels will almost certainly eliminate the trip hazard potential.” Ergonomic injuries are minimised – and in some cases eliminated – when a hose reel is used rather than manually carting a hose around and it provides the ultimate in safe, convenient storage as well.

Identity card to improve overhead lifting safety

LEEA, the international trade association for the overhead lifting industry, has launched a new registration and identity scheme aimed at lifting the standards of technicians working on overhead lifting equipment. The registration and identity scheme, applying from August 1 this year, is for workers qualified to test, examine and maintain overhead lifting equipment. LEEA will issue Team cards to employees of 31 member companies in Australia who have passed the association’s internationally-recognised Diploma examination.

It is urging all employers in the region to insist it is shown by anyone intending to work on overhead lifting equipment such as cranes, hoists, slings and load lifting attachments. Already in use in Europe, Africa, Asia and the Middle East, the LEEA Team card incorporates a photograph of the holder and lists the specific elements of the Diploma examination that he or she has passed. It is supported by a logbook that details the holder’s practical work experience on overhead lifting equipment. As a result, the Team card enables employers to quickly and easily identify workers with the right competencies for the overhead lifting equipment they are responsible for. All the personal details on the card can be verified by contacting

LEEA’s headquarters in the UK. Launching the new scheme, Stephen Batten, Managing Director of Redfern Flinn Lifting Equipment and Chair of LEEA’s regional committee in Australia, said: “Overhead lifting is increasingly recognized as a potentially high risk activity that demands rigorous standards of professionalism. The effective testing, examination and maintenance of all lifting equipment is an essential element of any safe work program, and it is vital that these procedures are only conducted by genuinely competent staff. “The launch of the Team card in Australia is a major step forward in terms of reducing the risk of death or injury as a result of sub-standard, poorly maintained or defective overhead lifting equipment.” To support the introduction of the

Each different type of laboratory has its own set of hazards. These hazards must be assessed before appropriate control measures can be put in place to minimise risks and ensure a safe working environment. As such, good laboratory practice will vary from laboratory to laboratory. Pro-Visual Publishing, alongside Science Industry Australia, has released its latest edition of the Laboratory Guide to Workplace Safety. This guide is aimed to help achieve health and safety awareness, and contribute to the wellbeing and safe practices of all involved in a laboratory environment. This year’s guide provides laboratory managers and technicians with advice and information on laboratory WHS. Laboratory safety begins with a safe attitude and, with a little planning, some basic rules and good housekeeping practices, many hazards can be greatly minimised. Risk assessment, WHS harmonisation rules and regulations, and housekeeping are prominent topics and relevant areas for managers and

workers to scrutinize when having to identifying hazards and maintain safe work practices. Workplace hazard identification in the laboratory sector is an ongoing process, with the responsibility shared between employers, supervisors and employees. This guide presents the importance of this ongoing process within its poster-like form and easy to read layout. SOME UPLIFTING SOLUTIONS TO IMPROVE WORKPLACE SAFETY making and productivity. Uplifting Solutions is an Australian company that’s been producing and sourcing new products from around the world for over ten years, to support optimal set up of a wide range of workplaces. Computer monitors Computer screens are an essential part of many tasks, and being able to move your screen easily can prevent neck and eye strain. Articulated monitor arms can mount single computer screens, through to large displays of several screens for a control room environment. These range from gas articulated arms through to virtual miniscaffolding systems.

Versatility and practicality … height adjustable desks

Most workplaces involve repetitive tasks. In many jobs that means using a computer, either in an office environment, a production line, a warehouse or a laboratory. Other roles involve different repetitive tasks. Some involve standing, or working at high surfaces, others involve sitting for extended periods. Humans are not machines. We're not well-equipped for a limited range of

movements, especially if they’re awkward or difficult. The overall idea of ergonomics developed in World War II, when the cockpits of fighter planes were redesigned, to make it easier for pilots to make quick decisions under pressure. Most of us work in less stressful environments than wartime fighter planes, but it is still true that a well designed work environment will support better decision-

Adaptable desks In many workplaces people need to work at standing height. While fine for part of the day, it can get very tiring after several hours. Uplifting Solutions provides a huge range of desks and seating for any situation. Height adjustable desks, both hand-wind and electric, are now hugely popular in Australia. First introduced into Europe over ten years ago, they are now a standard office requirement in many countries. Height adjustability allows different users to vary the desk height, as well as lets them change from sitting to standing throughout the day. Industrial chairs Industrial chairs typically need a wider range of movement than office chairs to cope with different shifts, tougher conditions and a wider range of physical movement than in the office.

Sit-stand and drafting chairs also help people work comfortably. They are particularly useful in production and industrial workplaces, as well as in laboratories where people are using microscopes or other specialized equipment. Chairs for wet or dusty environments need to have suitable glides or nonslip castors to prevent unintended rolling. Glides or castors for electrostatic discharge can be essential for workplaces handling flammable materials. Uplifting Solutions has a wide range of chair bases, including spider bases incorporating foot-ladders and nonslip foot rings. Prolonged sitting A multi-adjustable operator chair is also essential for control rooms. For 24-hour operations each person on shift needs to be able to adjust the chair to suit their preferred working position. The AMB Lab chair features specially treated vinyl upholstery to hinder the growth of bacteria. It also combines functionality with a comfortable moulded seat. Underneath the seat pan the mechanism of the chair is covered, to prevent bacteria and small particles from accumulating.

Other features include easy adjustment of the chair height and back rest angle, an extra strength adjustable steel foot ring, a high gas lift and soft castors for working on hard floors. New Neon Industrial chair After years of research and design in Europe, the Bimos Neon chair is now available in Australia. It’s the latest addition to the Uplifting Solutions range of seating for production, ESD and laboratory environments.

Neon combines excellent ergonomics with rugged durability. The seating surface is available in a range of materials to best suit the requirement. The backrest and seats are easily removed for cleaning, replacement or customisation. Neon can be configured with or without a foot-stand for working at variable heights. It’s also the first workplace chair to receive the German Blue Angel eco-label for its sustainable materials and modular approach.

Nilfisk, a global leader in professional cleaning equipment, prides itself on its internal training program. Having a highly trained expert team is a major benefit to its large client base. With its head office in Denmark, Nilfisk Australia is dedicated to delivering professional cleaning equipment that meets and exceeds the expectations of its customers. Andrew Carrick, Nilfisk’s senior group product manager for highpressure cleaners, visited Australia recently for a series of product training sessions with the local sales team. Carrick, an expert in high pressure cleaning technology, is based at the small town of Hadsund, Denmark – Nilfisk’s main centre for Research and Development. During his visit he spent three days at Nilfisk Australia’s headquarters at Blacktown in western Sydney showcasing the company’s latest high pressure

cleaning products to key sales representatives. “It is very important for them to understand how the technology works and how it differs from our competitors,” Carrick said. Eight members of the Nilfisk sales team from various states as well as two members of the technical team were treated to in-depth presentations during a three-day period. The training included a team building exercise at a Sydney cooking school, where team members were given an opportunity to display their culinary skills. Carrick travels about “six weeks out of every seven” briefing Nilfisk staff members across the globe. He aims to visit Australia at least once a year as part of the company’s Asia-Pacific training program that covers Japan, Korea, China, Singapore, Thailand, Philippines and Indonesia. Nilfisk sales representatives derive immense benefit from

Carrick’s presentations, gaining an in-depth knowledge of each product. “They get tips on how to give professional demonstrations to clients and how to ‘show’ machines, Carrick said. “They also get valuable tips on how our machines compare with our competitors – our main points of difference.” As well as focusing on the product, Carrick also demonstrates different cleaning methods designed to optimize clients’ cleaning processes, to improve efficiency and reduce costs. Carrick’s visit coincided with the launch of Nilfisk’s new range of petrol driven cold water electrical mobile pressure washers – the Poseidon 5,6,&7 range. The Poseidon range is ideal for applications where there is no power source. This includes construction, agricultural and rental applications – in fact anywhere where there is a significant amount of dirt that needs clearing. Carrick says the new models are robust and highly maneuverable to tackle harsh environments. Nilfisk markets its high pressure cleaners through the well-known Gerni brand – a division of the Nilfisk-Advance group. Nilfisk-Advance Pty Ltd Ph: 1300 556 710 www.nilfisk.com.au

SEW OFFERS THE PERFECT GEAR FOR HYGIENIC AREAS Food and beverage and pharmaceutical industries place high hygienic demands on their production facilities. MOVIGEAR from SEW-Eurodrive can meet and often surpass these operating requirements with its hygienic surface design. MOVIGEAR, a mechatronic drive system, sets entirely new standards with respect to efficiency and functionality. The hygienic surface design finished with “teflon-like” coating minimises cleaning efforts, which leads to reduced cleaning and system downtimes and ultimately reduces operating costs. Inherently the smooth surface design prevents the build-up of debris – the units are virtually self-cleaning. The totally enclosed mechatronic drive system applies the principle of surface cooling, eliminating the need of motor fans. Buyer beware … can you spot the differences?

NHP Electrical Engineering has warned buyers to beware of inferior quality imitation copies of its LOCKDIN captive Din-T locking device range that have recently appeared in the market. The inferior copies pose a genuine safety risk and should be avoided at all costs, NHP warns. The imitation product can be identified by the following attributes: The plastic base is fabricated from a flexible material. As a result, the metal arm can flex around the MCB toggle so that it can be easily defeated, even when padlocked. It is also very easy to remove entirely, padlocked or not. This poses a serious safety concern.

The base moulding cannot accommodate the auxiliary filler accessory due to incorrectly formed cavities. The bottom of the base moulding (see image) is not rounded. This design change was introduced in 2012 to facilitate the fitment of a Lock-Din/MCB combination to the NHP NC chassis. NHP’s staff can assist in identifying any non-conforming items. Future models will include the NHP logo to assist buyers. NHP Electrical Engineering Pty Ltd Ph: 1300 647 647 www.nhp.com.au

FLIR THERMAL IMAGING USED TO KEEP DEER IN CHECK Australia is not alone in trying to control its feral animals. In the UK, it is estimated there is a need to cull at least 500,000 deer every year to keep the national herd healthy, minimise death by starvation, disease and traffic collisions. County Deer Stalking was formed by Peter Jones who is a professional Deer Stalker in the South East of England. Jones manages the deer over a variety of beautiful countryside locations in Hampshire, Surrey and Sussex; counties which have large populations of Fallow, Roe and Muntjac Deer. As a professional stalker he has all the relevant Deer Management Qualifications (DMQ) and is a DMQ Approved Witness for the British Deer Society and British Association for Shooting and Conservation. Besides managing deer over around 2000 acres, County Deer Stalking also offers accompanied Deer Stalking of wild, free-ranging deer to both the beginner and experienced hunter. Typically the standard equipment for deer stalkers is a rifle with telescopic sight, a pair of binoculars and a knife. “For the last two years I heard and read more and more about using thermal imaging cameras for outdoor applications,” says Peter Jones. “I was really keen to get my hands on one to

ROBOTS ARE MORE COST EFFECTIVE THAN YOU THINK Have you ever thought that robots are too expensive, or too complicated for your small business? Well, all that has changed... Perhaps the most common use for robots outside the automotive industry is in palletizing. Whether it is stacking boxes, bags or some other product, onto a pallet, there are some distinct advantages in putting a robot to work on this task. First and foremost is the safety of your workers. If stacking product on pallets day in day out, it’s only a matter of time before someone gets injured. Because of this, the OHS Regulations call for the elimination of the risk of musculoskeletal disorders, like those caused by stacking bags or boxes, as far as is reasonably practicable. In the past, it wasn’t reasonably practicable for small manufacturers to implement expensive robotic solutions. These companies would instead implement pallet lifters, and vacuum lifting hoists to assist workers to minimise, but not eliminate the risks.

However, here’s the question: What if there was a robotic solution that cost as little as $38,000 per year, was simple to use, reliable and suitable for a wide range of product types and sizes? We think that such a solution would be reasonably practicable for a huge number of businesses, currently stacking product manually. What do you think? Talk to a Robotize representative to learn more. ENFORCER FORKLIFTS ARE ON THE RISE Enforcer forklifts is heading for another record year of forklift sales this year. The company has already broken its 2012 record and is on target for 38 percent year-onyear growth. According to ForkForce, the distributor of Enforcer Forklifts, this year’s strong growth has been underpinned by a marked increase in electric forklift, walkie stacker and reach truck sales. This is due in part to its popular Rent To Own program. Enforcer was launched in 2010 and

in just three years has become the top selling Chinese forklift in Australia. “Enforcer forklifts have become increasingly popular of late and we are picking up a lot more referral business and repeat customers, said ForkForce director Adrian Martin. “Having now been in the market for nearly four years they’ve proven that they are not only great value, but high quality and durable." Enforcer forklifts are sold with a 5-year parts and labour warranty.

“Being an Australian owned and operated forklift dealer has meant that even if a machine does breakdown our response time is quick and replacement parts are considerably cheaper than other brands,” said Mr Martin. He expects 2014 to be ForkForce's best year yet. ForkForce Australia Pty Ltd Ph: 1300 423 675 www.forkforce.com.au

DEMATIC ON CREST OF A WAVE

Champion Australian ironman Kendrick Louis with Dematic’s innovative new roller rack system at Newport SLSC

industryupdate.com.au

Dematic, a leading Australian logistics systems provider, has developed an innovative solution for an age old surf life saving problem. By combining standard pallet racking components with clever, roller-mounted shelves, Dematic engineers developed a new containerised storage system that provides additional storage for a large numbers of skis and boards when a club runs out of room. Several innovative concepts are used in the new storage container system. The first is standard pallet racking

uprights that are fixed to the inside of the container. These uprights support beams, with rollers mounted at intervals so the skis are stored securely. An important aspect of the unique design is the integrated roller system that facilitates easy loading and unloading of the craft into the container. Not only does it make the job easier, it minimises damage to the craft and is highly configurable. Dematic CEO and keen surf lifesaver, Glen Borg, drove the innovative engineering and donated the first solution

of its type to Newport Surf Life Saving club. Working closely with Mal Reid, another Newport SLS member, the pair looked to provide a scalable, flexible and modular solution that was simple to install. “Dematic is very excited about helping Newport SLS with this new idea, said Glen. “We are delighted to be able to help make our beaches safer.” Dematic Pty Limited Ph: 02 9486 5555 www.dematic.com.au
