The transition from summer to fall always seems to happen slowly in the Midwest, and then suddenly, all at once. This week as we’re finishing the October issue, the temperature has started to change, and the mornings are downright chilly.

Although I knew this seasonal change was coming, I was caught unprepared this year. Or, I should say, my kids’ wardrobe was caught unprepared: They have zero pants that aren’t highwaters right now. (On the bright side: I guess even though they aren’t prepared for fall, they are prepared for a flood?) So the last couple of days, school outfits have been shorts and hoodie jackets, until I can swing by the store and pick up some pants that will fully cover their ankles.

That shift from shorts to pants signals that we’re at the start of something good: fall! For some people, this is a time to wind down from all of the summer activities. But if you’re like me, the activities are just beginning. There are just so many fun things for families to do in Indianapolis right now, and you’ll find a great example of that in our Fall Fun Guide on page 18, as well as our October Calendar of Events on page 47. Fall festivals, corn mazes, haunted houses… you’ll find all that happening and much, much more around town.

If you ask me, autumn is the most wonderful time of the year — especially in Indianapolis. Take advantage of the season!

Game Night Fright: The Children’s Museum Guild’s Haunted House

Gather your games and deal out the deck, because you’re invited to The Children’s Museum Guild’s 58th Annual Haunted House: Game Night Fright. A wacky and twisted world of games awaits!

From October 12-30, dare to enter the Witch's Creepy House of Games, where you’ll quickly find that nothing is as it seems! Make your way through ginormous game pieces blocking your route, and navigate through the Delusional Dominos just to battle the Wretched Rooks. If after all of that, you start to feel a little hungry, perhaps you’ll enjoy a visit through Corrupt Confections. Beware of every bite — who knows what creatures are also snacking there!

The Orchard School students on the cover are following in the footsteps of their great-great grandmother, Mary Carey Appel, who was one of Orchard's nine founding mothers in 1922.

As one of the oldest non-sectarian, independent pre school-grade 8 schools in Indiana, Orchard celebrates 100 years of Progressive education in Indianapolis. In honor of this historic achievement, the school is hosting a Centennial Celebration Weekend Sept. 30-Oct. 2, featuring the Centennial Celebration at The Eiteljorg Museum, whose founder established the Orchard Woods, and Founders Day Festivities, when a time capsule from more than 30 years ago is opened by some of the alumni and teachers who completed it.

The Junior League of Indianapolis (JLI) invites you to attend their 51st annual Holiday Mart from November 17-20 at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. Holiday Mart is the JLI’s largest annual fundraiser, raising vital funds for community projects, community grants and women’s leadership programming. Holiday Mart offers a unique shopping experience, featuring small businesses selling everything from clothing to jewelry, art and children’s items.

This year, the JLI has shifted its focus to support foster youth and kinship care in the Indianapolis community. As the league extends this focus to its Holiday Mart programming, you can expect to see children and families more prominently featured throughout this year’s event. The JLI partnered with The Villages, a nonprofit agency committed to ensuring every child in Indiana has a safe and stable home, to feature seasonal art work from children in their network at this year's event. The kids were challenged to submit drawings and paintings depicting their “perfect winter day.” The winner will be

featured in Holiday Mart printed materials, and all submissions will be displayed during the event.

The JLI has also introduced Enchanting Entrepreneurs, an exciting new opportunity for young proprietors ages 5-17 to bring their business to Holiday Mart, selling their handmade products during special showcase hours:

Your Family Will Love These Halloween Game Night Ideas

Have you noticed that family game nights are making a comeback?

“After being stuck at home during the pandemic, many families really seem to have gotten back into playing games together,” says Molly Winkler, co-head witch of The Children’s Museum Guild’s 58th Annual Haunted House.

If you’re looking for some creative, simple and memorable Halloweenthemed games to play with your little ghouls and goblins this season, the Guild Witches recommend you give these four games a try.

Spider Race

Your little ones will love this. Each participant gets a tiny plastic spider and a straw. The first one to blow their spider across the finish line wins!

Soup Can Monster Bowling

This game takes a little bit of prep ahead of time, but your family will have fun showing off their creativity! In preparation for this game, you’ll need to save 10 soup cans (empty canned vegetable cans would be fine, too). Wash them and

remove their labels. Once dry, your family can paint scary faces, like Frankenstein’s monster, ghosts, or Jack-O-Lanterns. Once they’re nice and dry, set your boo-tiful creations up like a bowling alley. Grab a small plastic or rubber ball and knock them all down!

Halloween Bingo

Have everyone fill their bingo card squares with Halloween stickers. Each participant crosses off the items on their card as they see them on Halloween night. The first one to get BINGO wins!

Scoop Shack

Ice cream shops are often associated with warm summer days. But those in-the-know understand that sweet treats should be enjoyed year-round. Scoop Shack on the Northeast side at 71st Street and Binford offers a welcoming spot to connect, through ice cream, coffee, and more in comfortable seating, free Wi-Fi, games and events.

It all started after owners Sonja and Nicole found themselves wishing for a friendly ice cream spot to sit, relax and enjoy. Unfortunately, the neighborhood just didn’t have the tasty treat shop they were craving…so they decided to create it themselves. With the help of friends, family, and neighbors, Scoop Shack was established in August 2021.

Their rotating variety of ice creams are made locally by Sundaes, a 25+ year old staple from the Geist area. Scoop Shack keeps about 12 consistent favorites on the menu, and the other 12 rotate, and might include Graham Central Station,

Key Lime Pie, Blue Moon, Sticky Chewy Chocolate, Lem-Oreo, and Hoosier Buckeye flavors on any given day.

Light and crispy waffle cones are made daily—right before your eyes. Crispy broken bits of those cones are used for Ice Cream Nachos— topped with scoops of ice cream and accoutrements. They’re also used for homemade drumsticks –where the waffle cones are lined with hardened chocolate or caramel with ice cream – topped with nuts and sprinkles.

What to Do With All That Halloween Candy

For most kids, there’s no such thing as too much candy or too many sweets. But adults will probably want to prevent their little goblins from ingesting that big bucket of sugar for months on end. Not to worry: There are organizations that will gladly accept your excess Halloween candy donations — for a good cause!

Operation Gratitude

This organization honors the service of military and first responders by creating opportunities to express gratitude. Halloween time is the only time that Operation Gratitude accepts candy donations. Find out more about their Halloween Candy Give-Back program at operationgratitude.com .

Operation Shoebox

Operation Shoebox sends a bag of candy inside every care package they send to service members deployed across the world. They accept any and all kinds of candy, and it can be sent at any time of the year. Visit operationshoe box.com to learn more.

Soldiers’ Angels Treats for Troops

This is a Halloween candy col lection program that sends treats to deployed service members and veterans. Ronald McDonald House Charities

The Ronald McDonald House helps keep severely ill kids and their parents together during treatment. Many locations accept donations of unopened candy for the families they're helping after Halloween. More Candy Options

Other options for all that excess candy include calling the local homeless shelter, food pantry, or nursing home to see if they accept Halloween candy. You could also save it to stuff a birthday pinata, or take it to the office and leave it in the office kitchen.

WHY PRESCHOOLERS NEED ENRICHMENT CLASSES

You may have considered enrolling your preschooler in an enrichment program, but have hesitated because of obstacles such as cost, time commitment or the timing of the program. While these are all valid and understandable concerns, here are some things to consider when weighing the pros and cons of enrichment programs.

Gain Social Skills

Enrichment programs are one opportunity for preschoolers to learn valuable social skills that will help them throughout their lives. They will learn how to interact with peers in small group settings, and follow instructions from grown-ups other than their

caregivers in a structured environment. They also will learn more about the importance of sharing, taking turns, being respectful and kind, and how to follow directions to complete the task at hand. While it may take some time to learn these valuable skills, this is a great age to begin.

Expose Them to Challenges

Enrichment classes are not only enjoyable, they also offer your preschooler exposure to new challenges. Maybe it’s trying something new, or facing a fear, such as meeting new people. Maybe it’s learning how to behave in a structured environment, or how to participate in

group activities. Whatever it may be, challenging situations are not easy, but we know they build character and help us to learn grit - even at this young age.

Try Something New

There are a plethora of enrichment classes offered for preschoolers. And the incredible thing about these classes is that they are designed to be both playful and fun. If you look online for the types of classes offered to preschoolers, the names of the classes alone says it all. From Little Scientists to Alphabet Art to Bug Bonanza — there is something for everyone. Some of the opportunities include physical activities, science, math, art, nature, music, learning a new language, playing an instrument, reading, stretching and so much more. The time commitment for most classes offered to this age group is usually only a few weeks at a time, so it’s a great opportunity for your little one to learn more about what they like, and don’t like, without a lengthy commitment.

Find the Program That Fits Your Needs

Cost, driving distance, time commitment, class hours and class size are all things to consider before choosing a program. There are preschool enrichment programs offered at all times of day, so be sure to find the one that fits your entire family's needs. Classes

usually have a maximum number of participants, which is great to look into for those kids who do well in smaller groups.

If cost is a concern, know that some programs offer financial assistance. If you want to have your child involved, but finances are tight, look around until you find the program that is best for your family. There is no need for the enrichment program to break the bank. If driving is a concern, consider signing your child up with a friend and carpooling. It will save both time, and money. Plus, how fun is it to ride to class with a buddy?!

Develop Lifelong Passions

It might sound silly to think of your 3, 4 or 5 year old developing lifelong passions, but it is definitely possible. Some kids are drawn to physical activity, others to learning. Some may discover they love to create things with their hands, while others find an instrument they pick up and can’t put down. Each of us is wired differently and are driven by different things — and preschoolers are no exception. How cool is it that they can find something that will continue to bring them joy throughout their lifetime at such a young age?

Indy Parks Hosts Three Haunted Houses this October

Indy Parks will host three haunted houses this Halloween 2022!

The first is the Haunted Conservatory at the Garfield Park Conservatory on October 27. This one-night event from 7-9 p.m. will feature scary music, decorations, and ghouls, and is recommended for ages 8 and older. Note that strobe lights and artificial fog will be used at this location.

Then, two haunted houses will share Halloween weekend on October 28-30: The Brookside Park Haunted House and the Indy Island Haunted House at Raymond Park. The Brookside Park Fa.m.ily Center will transform its auditorium into a walk-through haunted maze designed to surprise and frighten! And Indy Island will transform its Aquatic Center for spook-tacular fun! Treats and goodie bags will be given to those children brave enough to make it through.

Both haunted houses will have lights on from 5-7 p.m. for those who scare easily, then lights off from 7-9 p.m. for those who don’t. The Brookside Park and Indy Island haunted houses are both suitable for children ages 5 and older.

All Indy Parks haunted houses are $5 for admission. Admission is paid at the door.

Local Spotlight: Indy Reads

As you peruse this article, you probably took for granted your ability to read, not remembering the effort it took to develop those skills. But 49,000 adults in Marion County are illiterate, a handicap which leads to many missed opportunities. And if those adults are parents, their children are 72% more likely to be at the lowest reading levels.

Indy Reads began with the mission of 100% literacy for all “to empower adults and families to reach their full potential.” Initially they served English-speaking adults through one-on-one tutoring, but have evolved as the Indianapolis population has grown and changed to serve both native and non-native English speakers through group classes and other services. Many locals know of Indy Reads as a downtown bookstore, but that is just one small facet of the organization. The Indy Reads Bookstore’s existence is purely to support the mission of the nonprofit, directing its sales profits directly back into literacy programming.

Indy Reads offers a variety of programs to aid adult learners, such as literacy classes, High School Equivalency programs, English learning classes, various certification courses, and a

customer service skills program — all free of charge. No one’s level of education or knowledge is too low, and they are welcome to participate in classes until they have achieved their goals.

“The more educated you are, the more possibilities you see for yourself,” says Ruba Marshood, Indy Reads chief executive officer.

“I love the personal stories of our students. They are impactful.”

Last year, Indy Reads had 339 students. Many of the referrals they receive are from connections with former or current students who have recommended the program. And it’s no wonder the program comes highly recommended, more than 80% of participants see literacy improvement.

And while Indy Reads provides services to adults, they know that children in these families will benefit by having literate parents. Adults who receive their High School Equivalency Diploma earn, on average, $8,000 more per year than those with no diploma, and have better continued career options. The generational impact is significant.

After the recent relocation of the Indy Reads bookstore to Fountain Square, the nonprofit has increased, focusing on utilizing the space for the community. “We are starting to integrate the bookstore programming with our students and our classroom,” says Toby Stark, Indy Reads chief development & communications officer. “We want them to be interrelated — we love for students to come to the bookstore to get reading resources and bring their children for family

As a small organization, Indy Reads relies heavily on the time and talent of volunteers, either as tutors or working at the bookstore, and generous donations, either financial, book donations on the first Friday of each month, or simply by visiting Indy Reads for your book shopping. Volunteer opportunities are very flexible, and there are even family-friendly volunteer roles in which you can engage your children.

Helping Kids Through Horsepower

This not-for-profit in Carmel offers physical, occupational and speech therapy on horseback.

Children’s TherAplay in Carmel is an organization that offers therapy for kids with disabilities — with horsepower. And by horsepower, that is exactly what they mean. The not-for-profit pediatric outpatient clinic offers hippotherapy, a form of therapy that uses horses as a tool for treatment.

Indy’s Child spoke to Emily Sigler, communications manager at Children’s TherAplay, to learn how this unique form of therapy is helping some children with disabilities develop life skills and achieve their goals.

Tell us about Children’s TherAplay.

Children’s TherAplay is a pediatric outpatient clinic where licensed therapists provide children with disabilities physical, occupational and speech therapy, which uses the movement of a horse as a tool to accelerate physical, emotional and behavioral development, in a safe and caring environment.

For over 20 years, TherAplay has been treating kids 18 months to 13 years with a variety of diagnosis and developmental delays, and we have grown to become the largest facility specializing in hippotherapy in the country. Diagnoses can include Down

syndrome, autism spectrum disorder, cerebral palsy, spina bifida, developmental delays and others.

The horse can provide a therapeutic input that cannot be replicated in any other type of therapy. These inputs have allowed our clients to see transformational outcomes, such as children with mobility limitations taking first steps, non-verbal children saying their first words, children learning to feed themselves independently, and dress and care for themselves more independently. The list goes on!

How do families get started with this form of therapy?

Families interested in services for their child first need a prescription from their child’s physician. Once a prescription is secured, parents

or caregivers can visit our website to fill out a new patient form, which will lead to scheduling an initial evaluation with a physical, occupational, or speech therapist. In the evaluation, the therapist and caregiver work together to determine if TherAplay is a fit for the child, and if so, create goals aligned with the caregiver and physician’s recommendations. We currently have a waitlist for occupational therapy and speech therapy services, and are accepting new patients for physical therapy. If the family joins the waitlist, our patient advocate will stay in contact and reach out when a spot becomes available.

What else should families know about hippotherapy and Children’s TherAplay?

Hippotherapy allows parents an effective alternative or supplement to medicinal therapy for developmental, behavioral and emotional delays in children. The horse can provide a therapeutic input that cannot be replicated in any other type of therapy. We also provide a child-focused, sensoryrich clinic with state-of-the-art equipment and technology to help children hit their therapy goals.

Play is the work of a child. The combination of hippotherapy and our sensory-rich clinical therapy allows our pediatric clients to work hard while they play. Children with disabilities often spend countless hours in and out of doctor’s offices. Coming to Children’s TherAplay feels like fun because of our relaxed barn feel and sensory-rich facility.

Do you accept insurance?

Yes! We accept all major medical insurance, including Indiana Medicaid. We also have scholarship and financial aid opportunities for families facing burdensome copays or deductibles.

At Children’s TherAplay, kiddos have experienced many “firsts”: first steps, first words, first time tying shoes, first time buttoning a coat, and so much more. These “firsts” give our clients and their families confidence and hope for an independent future.

Navigating Difficult Conversations with Your Child

Discussing hard topics is a fact of life with teens.

Sex. Drugs. Alcohol. Parties. Friendship. Social media. Do you hear these words and feel a small knot begin to form in your stomach? These are the topics we know we eventually need to discuss with our tweens and teens, but when is the right time? How do we even begin to say the words? We may dread having these conversations, but the reality is that they are important, and necessary, conversations for us to have.

Some parents may find it beneficial to have these conversations in places where you would usually talk to your teen. Talking while in the car, at night before bed, or someplace where you are able to naturally converse in a relaxed and familiar manner may help get the conversation going and take away the awkwardness that may come with the topic at hand.

You also will want to consider the time of day, and what is happening in your teen’s life at the moment. If they are tired or worn out from a busy week of school and activities, or you know they are not a morning person, keep those things in mind. You want to look at extenuating circumstances and decide whether the timing is right to start the conversation.

To help us better navigate the terrain of teens and difficult topics, licensed psychologist Shana Reece, Ph.D, has answered some questions that can give us the confidence we need to enter into these conversations in an open and effective manner with our tweens and teens.

When is the right time to start having these conversations?

Honestly, every child and situation is different. If you begin to have open and honest communication and conversations with your child early, then having more difficult developmental conversations are not seen as forced or fleeting. Instead, they are seen as more of a common conversation.

How do I begin the conversation?

Provide a safe and comfortable atmosphere for the child, instead of surprising them with a "let's talk" moment. Another important factor is listening to your child, and not competing or retreating from what they are trying to tell you. The world is much different, especially within these social aspects, and when parents try to compare their childhood to that of their child’s, it deflates the child's sense of trust and willingness to be transparent with the parents. Your initial reaction sets the tone for the continuation of the difficult conversation.

What if my child doesn't want to talk?

Talking is difficult for some teens, but again it’s important to have an open door policy in which your child feels safe to come to you when they are ready. Checking in on them in a healthy, consistent manner helps them to feel that you are in their corner and are ready, whenever they are, to talk.

If you start to have a conversation with your child and feel the timing isn’t quite right, it’s OK to stop and try again later. And while these topics aren’t easy to address, in the long run, they will help facilitate your relationship with your child and you will have peace knowing the information they are receiving is accurate, as opposed to learning these things from their peers.

Battling Bullying

Bullying is unwanted aggressive behavior — observed or perceived imbalance of power — and it can be direct or indirect. We know that bullying happens in many places, including at schools and online. Research shows that bullying can lead to or worsen feelings of anxiety, isolation, despair and depression.

What To Do About Bullying

If your child is dealing with bullying, here are some steps you can take to deal with the situation.

Have intentional conversations with your child. Initiate casual and curious talks when driving them around, before or after homework, over dinner, or when doing something fun with them. Ask open-ended questions. Showing that you trust them and are willing to listen can mean a lot to your child.

Initiate the conversation. It’s important to start the conversation because our children who experienced or witnessed bullying may not know how to bring it up, even if they want to talk about it. Bring it up gently, and let them know they’re not in trouble, and there’s nothing to be ashamed about.

Stay calm. Ask about their experience, be supportive, and determine if you need to talk to the school about it.

We, as parents, can help prevent bullying by encouraging our children to continue to do what they love, modeling love and kindness, and seeking help if they are being bullied or know others who are being bullied.

If you notice major changes in your child’s life, including lower academic performance, differences in eating or sleeping patterns, isolation, health complaints, substance use, or loss of interest in things they used to enjoy, seek help from a mental health professional.
