Introducing

LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER

Cheers to 40 Years!

ow! It's hard to believe that Indy's Child is celebrating its 40th anniversary this month. Our very first issue was published in November 1984. I had just graduated from college and was still living with my parents when my mom returned from a wedding in Austin, Texas, with her new idea. While she was there, she came across a copy of Austin's Child Magazine. She thought it was an amazing resource for parents in Austin and wanted to launch a similar magazine in Indianapolis. I was just beginning my job hunt when she recruited me to take on this incredible journey of publishing Indy's Child Magazine.

The world has changed a lot since we published that first issue. In 1984, we didn't have email, fax machines or cell phones. All of our business was conducted by a landline phone, mailed letters, and lots of driving to get ad approvals from advertisers. I was so excited when the fax machine came out in the late 1980s … that was a game changer. When the internet emerged and email became a way to communicate in the 1990s, our business model totally changed. Our team has been amazing at keeping up with the ever changing world of technology and innovation. It would only be possible to be celebrating 40

years with so many wonderful partners and support from the community. Many of our partners have been with us for many years and we truly wouldn't be here if it weren't for them. I would also like to thank our readers who turn to Indy's Child each month to keep up with all of the wonderful offerings and fun happenings taking place in central Indiana.

Most importantly, we would not be here without a strong team doing all of the hard work behind the scenes. Currently, we have a total of seven team members, many who have been with Indy's Child for many years. They all have young children (except for me) and are very active in reviewing new playgrounds, openings, and fun family activities around town.

I am sure that Indy's Child will be around for many more years to come but I'll probably be retired by the time our next forty years comes around (I would be 102). Cheers to our 40th, our readers, our partners and our team!

INDY’S CHILD COVER KIDS: WHERE ARE THEY NOW ?

A look back at a few of the kids (now adults!) who have graced our cover the past 40 years.

Since our first issue in 1984, Indy’s Child has featured hundreds of kids on our magazine covers. We reached out to a few of those child cover models — who are now adults, some with their own kids! — to catch up on how they’re doing.

Age During Photo Shoot

I think I was 11 or 12.

What This Cover Kid is Doing Now

I am raising four little boys in Indianapolis while growing my career in cyber security.

Fun Cover-Kid Memories

We did the photo shoot in my grandparents' pool. The photographer needed me to swim underwater and come up with my eyes open, and smile. I felt like a true professional when I pulled that off with water in my eyes!

Age During Photo Shoot

My brother, JT, and I were on the cover together, but I don’t recall how old we were!

What This Cover Kid is Doing Now

I am a business manager at a general contracting company. I am currently in Japan and love traveling with any free time off; I have traveled to over 35 different countries. I recently got certified in scuba dive and have enjoyed doing that as a hobby on my vacations. I have been married to Alexander Stipp since 2022.

Fun Cover-Kid Memories

I really loved dressing up as a police officer with my brother. I remember all the cool accessories we had. We even had fake mustaches, and I loved putting them on. I loved being with my brother in the shoot — we had the best time!

Age During Photo Shoot

I was an infant, less than a year old, I believe. I was just able to sit up.

What This Cover Kid is Doing Now

I am at the end of a seminary program, aiming to become a spiritual resources chaplain with a niche in contemplative practices, like meditation and prayer.

Fun Cover-Kid Memories

Unfortunately, I was too young to recall! But my parents remember it fondly because I was humorously nude. I was apparently in a bad mood, but then became all smiles when they tried this tactic.

Age During Photo Shoot

I was 7 years old, and I was on the 10th anniversary cover.

What This Cover Kid is Doing Now

I now work at Indy's Child magazine, alongside my mom, Mary Cox. For the past 14 years, one of my favorite parts of my job has been to plan the covers of each magazine. I love going to the photoshoots and watching as the future cover kid gets to be a model for the day, and ends up with their own cover!

Fun Cover-Kid Memories

Growing up, Indy's Child has always been a big part of my life. I remember going to my mom's office at Keystone at the Crossing when they still had the big conference room, and they would lay the whole magazine out on big boards each month. Before I made my cover debut, I was often used as an in-house model when articles called for stock photography. Once, my mom dressed me up in "rags" (her words) and put charcoal under my eyes to use for an article.

Top Kid-Approved Toys of 2024

he holidays are just around the corner, and shopping for little ones can be a daunting task. There are thousands of choices and even more questions about how to know what is safe, what is educational and what children might actually want.

The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis is coming to the rescue with its annual Kid-Tested, KidApproved event, which provides kids and adults the perfect opportunity to see what is on the market, and better yet, a handson opportunity to play with toys to determine what is most popular with kids themselves.

More than 30 toys were set out, and each child was given a few ballots to place in the boxes of toys they liked best. Store employees then counted the slips of paper to make a list of the toys that scored the most votes from little experts. The museum’s educators add value by sharing ideas on what learning goals each of the toys might help accomplish. The results are posted on the museum’s website at childrensmuseum.org

Some of the toys that were tested included zip string, playsets, board games, pretend play items, bendable crayons, foam that comes alive, a tower challenge, puzzles, a transformative car, eco-friendly bricks, clay dinosaurs, anatomy stamp set and a space rocket set.

WORDS BY KIMBERLY HARMS , THE CHILDRENS MUSEUM OF INDIANAPOLIS AROUND

Educators look at key factors to determine the learning values of the toys. “I suggest parents and caregivers consider toys and activities that promote collaborative and cooperative play so the whole family [or friends] can partake,” says Elyse Handel, early childhood education manager at The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis. “This creates opportunities and experiences in which

the child can practice important social-emotional and language skills, and be able to apply them in fun, familiar or developmentally appropriate ways. Many of the games and activities featured on the Kid-Tested, Kid-Approved list will encourage children to apply foundational math and science concepts, while others support a child’s creative play, critical thinking and

problem-solving skills as well as fine and gross motor skills.”

Other things caregivers, aunts, uncles, grandparents and friends might consider when buying toys include how well the toy will capture the child's interest and keep them engaged, in addition to the versatility of the toy in terms of if it offers different levels of complexity. Along with that, pay attention to if the toy is made from sturdy materials that can withstand enthusiastic handling and avoid small parts that may be a choking hazard for little ones. Some toys have safety marks, such as the CE symbol, which indicates that the toy has been assessed and meets the safety, health, and environmental requirements of the European Union (EU), UKCA mark, or the British Toy and Hobby Association's (BTHA) "Lion Mark."

Books are always a sure bet to give as a gift because they foster a love of reading and develop language skills while improving vocabulary and listening skills.

Whatever you choose, make sure you enjoy it along with your children. It goes a long way to helping you bond with your little one and create memories for years to come.

The Circle City Sidewalk Stompers Clown Band

This local musical group has been delighting Hoosiers and people all around the country since 1976.

f you’ve visited the state fair or other big events in the Circle City, the chances are high that you’ve heard The Circle City Sidewalk Stompers Clown Band perform.

Back in 1976, Steve Sutherland, the founder of the musical group, had a dream that he formed a band with his brothers and sisters, likely inspired by a similar group he’d seen at Ohio’s Kings Island the day before.

“He came home and envisioned himself doing something like that and having a group similar to that with his family involved,” says Bryan Sutherland, Steve’s son.

In present day, the band Steve once dreamed about is named The Circle City Sidewalk Stompers Clown Band, and has been performing for Hoosiers and beyond for more than 47 years. The band's performance is executed with the help of 12 musicians and is a 15-minute choreographed show, followed by a musical strolling through the crowd with familiar pieces. The performance itself is fastpaced, packed with upbeat music and musicians dressed in colorful clown costumes. Performers further entertain the crowd with comedic interaction and fancy footwork.

Growing up, Bryan always knew he wanted to be part of his father’s band.

“When the opportunity came around for me to play at 13, I greatly enjoyed it,” Bryan says. “I grew up around it my whole life. I played the trumpet. I got to travel with the band through my high school years and into adulthood. It’s been something that has been a dream of mine, now I hope to see it keep going for my dad. He’s aging and continues to play with the group, but I’ve taken over a lot of additional management roles to help keep it going.”

The Circle City Sidewalk Stompers Clown Band has performed all over the world and performs for crowds outside of Indianapolis. Locally, the band has performed for the Indiana Pacers, the Indianapolis Colts, and various events at the state fairgrounds and the Indiana Convention Center. They’ve performed at small town festivals, weddings, birthdays and corporate parties.

“Throughout the United States, we’ve played at a lot of state fairs,” Bryan says. “One of our highlights is playing at the Great American Brass Band Festival in Danville, Kentucky, and then of course the San Diego County Fair. The band has been to France once and China twice, and we went to Alaska, too. We played at the Alaska State Fair.”

Over the course of the band's nearly 50 years of existence, The Circle City Sidewalk Stompers Clown Band has had close to

200 band members. Currently, the band has nearly 25 people that are part of the group on a regular basis. The performance itself requires 12 people.

“This is a part-time, fun gig for everybody,” Bryan says. “We are all pretty semi-professional musicians. We all have fulltime jobs outside of this.”

The biggest difference between The Circle City Sidewalk Stompers Clown Band and other bands, in addition to its colorful costumes, is its flexibility and ability to be mobile within a crowd.

“We’ll wander through the event we’re at, and we’ll play music while we walk,” Bryan says. “We can be very flexible, and not many other bands have the ability to do that. We also memorize all of our music, whereas a lot of other bands read music from the page.”

FOSTERING: A Guide for Beginners

Information and insights for starting your fostering journey.

Fostering a child can be one of the most rewarding experiences you'll ever have. It's a chance to make a real difference in a child's life while bringing new joy and purpose to your own. Of course, it can be challenging too, but with the right resources and support, many families find it incredibly fulfilling. If you're curious about what it takes to become a foster parent in Indiana, from licensing requirements to the emotional and financial support available, this guide will walk you through the basics to help you get started.

Becoming a Foster Parent: Steps to Licensure

There’s a lot to think about when starting the foster licensing process. In Indiana, you need to be at least 21 years old to become a licensed foster parent. Beyond that, here are some other requirements to keep in mind:

• You must live in Indiana and either own or rent a home that meets safety standards.

• You can be married, single or cohabitating. (If cohabitating, the relationship with your partner, including same-sex partners, should be est ablished for at least one year to show stability.)

• All adults in the house hold must pass a criminal history and background check.

• You must demonstrate financial stability.

• All adults in the home must be in good physical and mental health.

• You should have a strong support system of friends and family who are willing to help during and after the licensing process.

• Provide positive personal reference statements.

The Indiana Department of Child Services requires all applicants to successfully complete 10 hours of pre-service training before their initial licensure, and an additional CPR and first aid training. Once the application is submitted, a home study process begins, including reference checks, a medical exam, background checks and a home assessment. The entire licensing process usually takes around 3 to 6 months.

Financial Help for Foster Families

Foster families receive financial support to help cover the costs of caring for a child placed in their home. Each month, they receive a tax-free reimbursement, known as a "per diem," which is calculated based on the child's age and specific needs. This per diem is designed to help cover everyday expenses like food, clothing and other essentials. In addition to this, medical care for foster children is often covered by Medicaid, ensuring they have access to necessary healthcare without the burden of extra costs.

Beyond the monthly per diem, foster families may also qualify for other helpful resources. For example, working foster parents or those attending school can often apply for childcare assistance to help with daycare or babysitting costs. School-aged children in foster care typically qualify for free or reduced-price school lunches, and families may see school fees for activities, field trips or sports programs waived. For younger children, programs like WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) can provide additional nutritional support.

Community involvement also plays a big role in supporting foster families. Many churches, local organizations, and service groups step in to offer extra help. This can come in the form of home-cooked meals, transportation to appointments, or even assistance with household chores like lawn care. On top of that, foster families might receive free or discounted tickets to recreational activities like amusement parks, museums, and local events, helping to create fun and memorable experiences for the children in their care without stretching the family’s budget.

Supporting Family Connections

A lot of kids in foster care still keep in touch with their biological families, usually through visits that are arranged by the court. As a foster parent, you might help facilitate these visits and work with caseworkers to make sure there are healthy boundaries in place. It’s all about supporting the child’s connection to their family in a way that feels safe and comfortable. When foster parents and biological families can build a positive relationship, it often leads to better outcomes for the child, helping them feel more secure during a tough time. Fostering a child is a complex but profoundly impactful way to make a difference in a child's life.

Emotional Support and Resources

Foster parents do so much more than just provide a safe and loving home — they’re also there to help kids navigate the tough emotions that come with being separated from their biological families. This can mean helping children cope with trauma and big feelings, which is no easy task. Luckily, foster families have regular visits from social workers, plus plenty of training and emotional support to lean on. If foster parents need a break, respite care is available, whether it's planned or for emergencies. To keep their license, foster parents also need to meet ongoing requirements like training hours, safety certifications, home inspections, and staying up to date with rules.

the Magic of Music

Introducing tunes to tots, toddlers and preschoolers can benefit them in many ways.

Explore Instruments

Toddlers and preschoolers are naturally curious, so playing with instruments is a perfect activity for them. Set up a mini music corner with simple percussion instruments like drums, shakers and bells. Allow your kids to experiment with creating different sounds and rhythms, which in turn is great for fostering their creativity and sensory development.

Have a Dance Party

usic has a way of making us feel emotions, sparking creativity and bringing people together. “Music benefits children by influencing their cognitive, emotional, social, and physical growth,” says Emma Robinson, marketing and communications manager for the Indianapolis Children’s Choir. “Parents can encourage musical activities by creating a musical environment in the home and incorporating music into their daily routines. Playing music in the background, singing together, using simple instruments or household items to explore sounds and rhythms, incorporating repetition, and attending a music class together are all effective ways to encourage your little ones through music.”

What better way to introduce the benefits of music to our little ones than through musical activities tailored especially to their needs? Here are a variety of fun and educational music activities that will entertain young kids and also help in their development.

Make Story Time Musical

Incorporating music into story time can make the experience even more fun for young children. Gather your kids around for a musical story time session where they can clap, sing and dance along to the rhythm of the words. This activity not only enhances their listening skills but also introduces them to musical elements in a playful way.

Nothing gets children moving and grooving like a dance party! Create a playlist of upbeat, kid-friendly songs and encourage your little one to dance. Dancing is a great physical activity, and it also helps to improve your child’s coordination and sense of rhythm.

Play Musical Games

Playing games, like musical chairs or freeze dance, is a great way to explore music with your toddler. These games can be fun while also introducing them to music concepts like tempo and rhythm.

Sing Your Heart Out

Music and singing go hand in hand, so sing-along sessions are a fantastic activity for young children. Choose

popular nursery rhymes or simple songs with repetitive lyrics, and encourage your child to sing along. Singing helps children improve their language skills, memory and confidence.

Listen to Music

This one is probably obvious! Play a variety of music styles for your toddler to listen to, such as classical, jazz or world music. Talk to them about the different sounds they hear.

Attend Music and Movement Classes

Enrolling toddlers and preschoolers in music and movement classes can be a structured yet fun way to introduce them to music. These classes typically involve singing, dancing and exploring different musical concepts, all while interacting with kids around their own age. Music and movement classes help kids gain social skills, improve their coordination, and foster a love for music from an early age.

These activities, among many others, provide a wonderful opportunity for young children to engage with the world of music in a meaningful and enriching way. The key is to make music activities fun and interactive, which will encourage their love for music from a young age.

The Benefits of Music Therapy

Music has the power to help kids of all ages and abilities.

ave you ever heard a song and felt like you were being transported to another place and time? Have you ever been overcome with an emotion, like grief or joy, while you listen to music, or felt an irresistible urge to tap your feet, swing your arms or dance around because the music is just that good?

There is no question that music moves us, and not just our bodies. Music has a way of connecting with something deeper inside each of us. It is used to calm us at the spa, make us dance at the wedding reception and cry at funerals. Music is good for the soul and that is one of the many reasons why music therapy is an exceptional tool for healing, not only psychologically — but physically, too.

What is Music Therapy?

According to Psychology Today, music therapy is a form of treatment that uses music to help accomplish the patient’s individualized goals. This evidence-based approach involves techniques such as listening to, reflecting on, and creating music under the guidance of a trained music therapist. You don’t need to have a musical background to benefit from music therapy. People of all ages, from children to adults, might find it is a good fit for their therapeutic needs.

Music therapy is often performed one-on-one, but can also be performed in group settings, including family-centered music therapy where everyone gets involved. It is also best when used in conjunction with other forms of therapy and/ or medications if necessary.

How Does It Help?

Have you ever heard a song played that you haven’t heard for years, but still somehow can recite every one of the words from memory? Maybe you can’t remember what you had for dinner last night … but that song is still in there. It may not come as any surprise to you then that music therapy can help to improve memory and cognitive function. In addition to memory, music therapy can also help physically to reduce stress, lower blood pressure, improve sleep and lower your heart rate, too.

There are many emotional benefits to music therapy, as well. It can help to lift someone’s mood, reduce anxiety, alleviate depression, increase joy and awe, regulate difficult emotions, facilitate self-reflection and assist in trauma processing.

Who Benefits from Music Therapy?

Anyone can benefit from the effects of music therapy, but it has been shown to be particularly effective for people with autism spectrum disorders and depression.

According to Autism Parenting Magazine, “Various autism research studies show music therapy is beneficial for tackling challenging behaviors, reducing anxiety, and improving a child’s attention. Research also shows that music therapy can improve confidence, social inter action, independence, concentration, attention and motivation.”

In addition to these things listed, music therapy can help children on the spectrum learn to express and regulate their emotions, cultivate social skills and enhance communication as they learn to express their emotions and thoughts through rhythms, song and non-verbal cues.

If music therapy is something you are interested in pursuing for your child, seek a professional music therapist who has a degree in music therapy. Once you find a therapist, the goals will be documented and discussed so that you can see the progress that is being made. You can also take the skills learned in therapy and apply them at home, such as playing instruments, singing songs or exploring different rhythms to help with communication, emotional connection and of course — having fun!

TEENS & TWEENS

Local Volunteer Opportunities for Tweens and Teens

Fun ways that kids can make a difference in their community.

nyone who has a teenager, or has ever been a teenager, probably knows the teenage years can be a bit self-absorbed. This is normal for this time of life when they are experiencing changes in their hormones, bodies and relationships — and all with social media at their fingertips.

We know all of this, but as parents, we still hope to help our children learn to look beyond their circumstances to others in their school, home and community. We want to try our best to instill in them that the world does revolve around them.

So, how do we help our children begin to look beyond themselves and out at the world around them? One way is to encourage your tweens and teens to volunteer. This can be done individually, with friends or as a family. Volunteering has many benefits for teens, including skill development, personal growth, development of a strong work ethic, an increase in patience, respect for others, leadership, a better understanding of diverse cultures and communities, and a remarkable reduction in risky life behaviors and substance abuse.

If this all sounds great to you, then here are some local places you and your tween, teen, or family can begin to look into. Hopefully, you will find something that works for you!

The Indianapolis Zoo

The Zoo Teen Program is an exciting way for high school students ages 14 to 18 to explore career opportunities, meet new friends, gain customer service skills, and much more. The Indianapolis Zoo seeks responsible, reliable, enthusiastic students who are interested in learning about animals, can interact with Zoo guests, and can be role models for their peers. Students of all academic levels will be considered for the program. Students must fill out the application, attend one of two open houses in January, participate in a

small group interview, and attend the orientation and training sessions. Zoo Teens will be asked to volunteer one day per week throughout the summer or two one-week time blocks, one shift per month during the school year, and one shift at ZooBoo or Christmas at the Zoo.

Indianapolis Humane Society

The Parent & Me program is an ongoing program for children at least 8 years old and an adult who is at least 21 years old. Parent & Me Volunteers help with care of animals held in adoption kennels. To start volunteering, you must submit an application online and complete the required steps of training.

Pack Away Hunger

Every day, people in every corner of the globe go to sleep on empty stomachs, including millions of malnourished children. Pack Away Hunger fights this reality by providing a hands-on way to create meals for families around the corner and around the globe. Their meal packing programs are a fun and inspiring way to make a tangible difference in the fight against hunger. This is also a great opportunity for families to serve together. You can visit their website to find out when the next local public pack is happening, and get your family signed up today.

Adopt a Family for the Holidays

With the holidays around the corner, you and your family may consider adopting a family in need. The Salvation Army Angel Trees are usually located in the Greenwood Park Mall and Castleton Square Mall. You can also contact your school, local food bank or church to see if they know of any families that are in need of being adopted for the holidays. In addition to adopting families, many churches, schools and food banks also host annual food drives and clothing drives at different times throughout the year.
