isions of sugar plums have been dancing in my head lately. No, I’m not coming down with the flu. (Knock on wood!) It’s because of this time of year. We are entering a sweet spot filled with Nutcracker plays and Christmas movies and holiday events. ‘Tis the season when the holiday magic starts to happen!
I know, I know. We haven’t even sat down for Thanksgiving dinner yet, and here I am talking about the holidays. But November — especially late November — is a month to celebrate. Because it’s when you can get excited of what’s to come, without having to start thinking yet of your long to-do list and all of the shopping that needs to be done once the holidays ramp up. This is a time to just let yourself revel in the merriment of the season.
We want you to get pumped about the holiday season, so turn to “Holiday Sneak Peek” on page 15 to find out about some of the festive fun happening around town. From plays and trains to festivals and lights, this season is packed with many events that will guarantee to put you in a merry mood. And that article is just the tip of the iceberg! You’ll find even more wonderful events happening this month in our Calendar of Events on page 34.

Glen Helen Raptor Center
len Helen in Yellow Springs is Ohio’s largest most-visited private nature preserve and is connected on its southern edge to John Bryan State Park. A highlight of visiting Glen Helen is a stop at the Raptor Center.
What to Expect
The Raptor Center features over 20 native raptors and birds that can be viewed in outdoor enclosures. It’s an opportunity to see up close the birds that occupy our skies. On Saturdays and Sundays, the indoor classroom offers a more interactive experience.
Who You’ll Meet
The Raptor Center’s Meet the Birds web tab ( glenhelen.org/ raptor-bios) provides short introductions and pictures of its current raptor ambassadors. The ambassadors are unable to live in the wild and live at the center year-round. It’s a great educational tool to use before or after a visit.
Saving Lives
The Center is also an important community resource, providing treatment and rehabilitation for orphaned, sick and injured raptors, admitting about 200 annually with a goal to release as many as possible back into the wild.
Programs & Support
Group programs are offered on and offsite. Funding for the Center is provided through visitor donations, bird sponsorships and program fees. The Raptor Center also keeps an up-todate wish list on its site including Amazon and Chewy links.

The holiday season starts on Thanksgiving weekend! Mark your calendar for November 29, when the Dayton Holiday Festival kicks off family-friendly fun in downtown Dayton. Watch the holidays light up during Dayton’s traditional tree lighting on Courthouse Square, followed by a nighttime parade for children, sparkling with more than 100,000 lights. Also enjoy live entertainment, live reindeer, a gingerbread house contest, a street fair, horsedrawn wagon rides, kids activities and lots more. Best of all, the Dayton Holiday Festival is free!

Positive Parenting With Tired Kids
s your child having a rough time recovering from the Daylight Saving Time change? If you’ve been noticing more behavioral problems or tantrums in the home than usual, you’re not alone! Scientists have found that there is a strong relationship between sleep habits and behavioral health problems. When kids don’t get enough rest, it can lead to challenging behaviors, such as:
• overreacting
• impatience and trouble waiting
• being less cooperative
• whining
• falling asleep during the day
• having more meltdowns or tantrums over seemingly small situations
“Sleep is so important to a child's well-being because it influences how they manage stress and regulate their emotions,” says Emily Weitz, children’s mental health expert. “As a parent myself, I understand how challenging it is to help your child when they’re overly tired. Understanding and addressing behaviors when your kid is overly tired with compassion not only nurtures your child’s rest but also adds to the supportive home environment you are creating.”
Because sleep and behavior are closely linked, you might be wondering if your approach to parenting should change

when your child is overtired. According to the On Our Sleeves experts, the answer is “Yes!” They’ve shared some tips on how to practice positive parenting while being mindful of your child’s fatigue.
Provide support. When children are tired, they might have less patience and will need more support. If this is a tough time, try helping your child with their homework or doing a calming activity together, like doing a puzzle or coloring. Avoid engaging in activities you know will get them excitable, like video games.
Start wind-down time earlier. If you start your bedtime routine about a half hour earlier, this can help some kids decompress. You can try starting bath time earlier than usual, reading extra books together before bed, or, if your child is older, encouraging them to

relax in bed and read on their own. Try to find ways for them to catch-up on sleep, even if it means saying “no” to other activities and events. You can share with them, “I can tell you are needing more sleep. We are going to move our family movie night to tomorrow so that we can catch up on sleep. This is not a punishment, but just a way to help you be healthier.”
Stay calm and respond, don’t react. While it can be tempting to get upset during a tantrum, try to encourage a calm-down period instead. Instead of saying “Stop crying and get over it!” or giving in to what they want, try saying: “I can see you are upset right now. It is not OK to yell and scream. I am going to ask you to take a deep breath and try to calm your body down. Then we will be able to talk about your feelings.” Once they are able to calm down, offer them compliments and encouragement for their efforts.
You can say, “I like the way you were able to calm your body down. Now we can talk about our next steps.”
Remain consistent with boundaries. If you ask your child to do something and they push back, it’s easy to want to just let it go. But staying consistent is really important for their growth. Try saying something like, “I get that you don’t feel like cleaning up your toys, but it’s something we have to do. If you don’t, then you won’t be able to play with them after school tomorrow.”
Focus on self-care. When your child is tired, it can be exhausting for parents, as well. After putting your child to bed, give yourself permission to relax and unwind. Watch your comfort show or movie, read a book or take a bubble bath.
If your child is experiencing ongoing sleep disturbance or long-term issues with sleep, consider reaching out to your pediatrician. There might be an underlying health condition contributing to their lack of sleep

e pass by signs every day. They guide us. They inspire us. They’re part of our pop culture and history. The American Sign Museum (ASM) brings all of this together with almost 100 years of signs displayed in a family-friendly experience that informs, delights and entertains.
How did the American Sign Museum get started?
David Dupee, executive director of ASM: The Museum was founded by Tod Swormstedt back in 1999. Coming from a family with a long history in the sign industry, Tod opened the first location in Walnut Hills in 2007. He quickly outgrew the space and the Museum purchased our current building in 2012. The Museum has continued to grow to become the largest public sign museum in the country.
What’s new at ASM?
We recently completed a $5.7M campaign that doubled the Museum's footprint to over 40,000 square feet. Having opened just this past July, the expansion extended the unique Main Street experience and collection while also adding a theater, a 300-person event space and dedicated classroom for K-12 programming.
What are the top five signs people should look for when they visit?
With a collection that spans 100 years of sign history, different signs resonate with different people. Whether it's local signs like Big Boy and Suder Arts or signs from other parts of the country like Howard Johnson, the bright lights of Americana have something for everyone.
Tell us about Neonworks of Cincinnati.
Neonworks is the only fullservice neon shop within a 100-mile radius. A longtime tenant of the Museum, Neonworks was acquired by the Museum as part of the expansion. In addition to public demonstrations on Saturdays, Neonworks offers corporate team-building workshops. It's also the place to go for custom neon signs and repairs!

Make Story Time Musical
Incorporating music into story time can make the experience even more fun for young children. Gather your kids around for a musical story time session where they can clap, sing and dance along to the rhythm of the words. This activity not only enhances their listening skills but also introduces them to musical elements in a playful way.
Explore Instruments
Toddlers and preschoolers are naturally curious, so playing with instruments is a perfect activity for them. Set up a mini music corner with simple
percussion instruments like drums, shakers and bells. Allow your kids to experiment with creating different sounds and rhythms, which in turn is great for fostering their creativity and sensory development.
Have a Dance Party
Nothing gets children moving and grooving like a dance party! Create a playlist of upbeat, kid-friendly songs and encourage your little one to dance. Dancing is a great physical activity, and it also helps to improve your child’s coordination and sense of rhythm.
Play Musical Games
Playing games, like musical chairs or freeze dance, is a great way to explore music with your toddler. These games can be fun while also introducing them to music concepts like tempo and rhythm.
Sing Your Heart Out
Music and singing go hand in hand, so sing-along sessions are a fantastic activity for young children. Choose popular nursery rhymes or simple songs with repetitive lyrics, and encourage your child to sing along. Singing helps children improve their language skills, memory and confidence.
Listen to Music
This one is probably obvious! Play a variety of music styles for your toddler to listen to, such as classical, jazz or world music. Talk to them about the different sounds they hear.
Attend Music and Movement Classes
Enrolling toddlers and preschoolers in music and movement classes can be a structured yet fun way to introduce them to music. These classes typically involve singing, dancing and exploring different musical concepts, all while interacting with kids around their own age. Music and movement classes help kids gain social skills, improve their coordination, and foster a love for music from an early age.
These activities, among many others, provide a wonderful opportunity for young children to engage with the world of music in a meaningful and enriching way. The key is to make music activities fun and interactive, which will encourage their love for music from a young age.
Culp's Cafe

rand new at Carillon Historical Park is Culp’s Café, which also features an eat-in restored 1903 Barney & Smith Interurban railcar, reminiscent of the soda fountains and lunch counters of Dayon in the early 1900s.
The last name, Culp, is not unfamiliar in Dayton. Charlotte Gilbert Culp was a young widow in 1902. To support her six young children, she started making baked goods for them to sell door-to-door. This expanded into a stand at the South Main Street Market and then into the Arcade at three lunch counters selling poultry, eggs, cheese and dill pickles. Their full Arcade cafeteria was serving 5,000 customers a day in the 1940s and was sold in the 1960s.
On the Menu
Culp’s focuses on breakfast and lunch, and offers a variety of favorites sure to satisfy even the pickiest eater. Breakfast offers pancakes, waffles, corned beef hash, buttermilk biscuits and sausage gravy, eggs benedict and more. Sandwiches include
a smash burger, egg, tuna and patty melts, and can be ordered in a soup and sandwich combo with the soup of the day or potato leek soup. Kids menu items include buttermilk pancakes, grilled ham and cheese, a kid’s burger and chicken tenders. Soda fountain classics include an ice cream sundae, ice cream float, scooped ice cream, milkshakes, malts and sodas and phosphates.

Fostering a child can be one of the most rewarding experiences you'll ever have. It's a chance to make a real difference in a child's life while bringing new joy and purpose to your own. Of course, it can be challenging too, but with the right resources and support, many families find it incredibly fulfilling. If you're curious about what it takes to become a foster parent in Indiana, from licensing requirements to the emotional and financial support available, this guide will walk you through the basics to help you get started.
Becoming a Foster Parent: Steps to Licensure
There’s a lot to think about when starting the foster licensing process. In Ohio, you need to be at least 18 years old to become a licensed foster parent. Beyond that, here are some other requirements to keep in mind:
• You can be single, married or cohabitating.
• You must live in the state and either own or rent a home with at least two bedrooms.
• You need to have a stable income that meets your household needs.
• All household members over the age of 18 must pass background checks.
• Each child must have a separate bed, and children of opposite genders over the age of five must have separate bedrooms.
• Foster parents must be in good physical and mental health, free of any conditions that could endanger a child.
• Homes must be free of hazardous conditions and pass a fire inspection and safety audit.
• At least one person in the home must be able to read, write and speak English, or be able to communicate effectively with both the child and the agency.
In Ohio, pre-placement training, including CPR and first-aid certification, is required to become a licensed foster parent. This training takes 24 hours to complete and helps prepare potential foster families by increasing their knowledge of parenting children who have experienced abuse or neglect. Once the application is submitted, a home study process begins, including reference checks, a medical exam, background checks and a home assessment. The entire licensing process usually takes around 3 to 6 months.
Financial Help for Foster Families
Foster families receive financial support to help cover the costs of caring for a child placed in their home. Each month, they receive a tax-free reimbursement, known as a "per diem," which is calculated based on the child's age and specific needs. This per diem is designed to help cover everyday expenses like food, clothing and other essentials. In addition to this, medical care for foster children is often covered by Medicaid, ensuring they have access to necessary healthcare without the burden of extra costs.

School-aged children in foster care typically qualify for free or reduced-price school lunches, and families may see school fees for activities, field trips, or sports programs waived. For younger children, programs like WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) can provide additional nutritional support.
Community involvement also plays a big role in supporting foster families. Many churches, local organizations, and service groups step in to offer extra help. This can come in the form of home-cooked meals, transportation to appointments, or even assistance with household chores like lawn care. On top of that, foster families might receive free or discounted tickets to recreational activities like amusement parks, museums and local events, helping to create fun and memorable experiences for the children in their care without stretching the family’s budget.
Supporting Family Connections
Beyond the monthly per diem, foster families may also qualify for other helpful resources. For example, working foster parents or those attending school
A lot of kids in foster care still keep in touch with their biological families, usually through visits that are arranged by the court. As a foster parent, you might help facilitate these visits and work with caseworkers to make sure there are healthy boundaries in place. It’s all about supporting the
child’s connection to their family in a way that feels safe and comfortable. When foster parents and biological families can build a positive relationship, it often leads to better outcomes for the child, helping them feel more secure during a tough time.
Emotional Support and Resources
Foster parents do so much more than just provide a safe and loving home. They’re also there to help kids navigate the tough emotions that come with being separated from their biological families. This can mean helping children cope with trauma and big feelings, which is no easy task. Luckily, foster families have regular visits from social workers, plus plenty of training and emotional support to lean on. If foster parents need a break, respite care is available, whether it's planned or for emergencies. To keep their license, foster parents also need to meet ongoing requirements like training hours, safety certifications, home inspections and staying up to date with rules.
