ust five minutes north of Nashville sits a 55-acre tract of land in the small town of Bean Blossom. It was there, in the 1960s, where Bill Monroe, also known as the Father of Bluegrass, visited and fell in love with the beauty of the place, which offers the scenic pastures and rolling hills characteristic of Brown County, that attract thousands of onlookers each year. In 1965, Monroe had top-billed the world’s first multi-day bluegrass event, and he wanted to host his own events. The land in Bean Blossom, which the Kentucky native purchased soon after first visiting the area, offered the perfect spot to do it. In 1966, Monroe began his own bluegrass event, the Bill Monroe Memorial Bean Blossom Bluegrass Festival, which now stands as the oldest, continuously running bluegrass festival in the world and will see its 47th year this June. Each year, thousands from around the world converge on the area to camp, commune and celebrate the history and tradition of bluegrass music. The event, which features more than 50 bands, musical workshops and a bluegrass camp for kids, is only one of approximately a dozen annual music festivals and events that take place at the park each year, but it is the

most well-known—and it’s certainly known to Brown County natives. For many, like musician Don Ford, the park was influential on them as young children. “My favorite time of the year as a kid in the early ’70s was bluegrass festival time in Bean Blossom,” Ford says. “I never did stay at the campgrounds because we lived so close. As a youngster in bib overalls and no shoes, loving to dance around ‘hillbilly’ style, I would go at it until I would almost fall over. “There was a certain togetherness that came from everyone at the festivals,” Ford recalls. “When I go there now for shows it’s like coming home, and that same togetherness exists still today.” Beyond the Bean Blossom Bluegrass Festival, the historic music park boasts is the home of the Brown County Jamboree and the Bill Monroe Bluegrass Hall of Fame & Museum. The museum, which houses historical photos, instruments, performers’ costumes and has a Hall of Fame room, brings drop-in guests on a

daily basis, says Nancy Sumpter, park manager. The events are well-known to locals and guests the world-over, but what many don’t realize, Sumpter says, is that guests can come to the park to camp yearround, and the beautiful setting offers visitors a place to host outdoor weddings, receptions, reunions and picnics. “Believe it or not, there are plenty of locals who do not realize we have all that acreage, that we have all this camping,” Sumpter says. “It amazes me how many people are from the county who don’t realize what we have.” The park offers more than 300 electric and water hookups and both rustic cabin rentals, as well as primitive tent sites. Both wooded and open sites are available, and the campground offers showers, restrooms, coin laundry facilities and two dump stations. Guests can also make use of the playground, stocked fishing lake, walking trails and assorted picnic tables, fire rings and barbecue grills. “It’s beautiful property,” Sumpter says. “It’s conveniently located, but once you get back in the property you feel like you’re really out there. Common Grounds Iris Gearhart gives her sister, Melita Holler, all the credit for getting her into the coffee business. “It was mainly my sister who had the big idea for a coffee shop,” Iris explains. Melita cooked up these wild ideas about coffee in 2004, her sister explains, and by 2005, the pair had opened their first shop, called Common Grounds, in The Commons community center in Columbus. “It was a nice run,” Iris says. “We had plenty of space to hang out, we had an openmic night, and we got to be a part of the special events going on in The Commons.” But the “run” was relatively short-lived. The Commons eventually closed for renovations in 2007, and the sisters, who Iris says were learning the ins and outs of the coffee business daily, packed up and found a new space to start again. The second time around, the women set up shop in Nashville, where they expanded their offerings with a larger selection of drinks and snacks and by bringing other merchandise, like antiques and collectibles, in to attract customers. They brought so much more in, Iris says, that they ran out of room. In 2010, the women moved again, this time to their current space in Nashville’s Old Colonial Building at 66 N. Van Buren St. It’s here, Iris says, where she will stay. Melita, who passed away almost two-and-a-half

years ago, is now honored for her influence on the business with a portrait of the sisters that hangs on the wall of Common Grounds. Elsewhere, customers will find a wealth of handmade items, collectibles and vintage offerings for sale, along with organic and Fair Trade coffees, loose teas and specialty drinks. Hungry guests can also choose from an ever-changing menu that includes quiches, gluten-free breads, soups and sweets, such as homemade cookies, cinnamon rolls, brownies and scones. Regulars frequent the shop for these treats, as well as for the atmosphere, Iris says. “You can come in, sit down, be comfortable and make yourself at home,” she explains. Though Iris no longer hosts official openmic nights, the shop does house a piano, she explains, where high school-age patrons regularly play. As for her home-base in Brown County, Iris feels “being in Nashville is the ultimate,” she says. “It’s fun. I really enjoy what I do.” And she has her sister, Melita, to thank for it.

Muddy Boots Café Owning Muddy Boots Café could be called a labor of love for Betsy and James Oblack—for a number of reasons. The main one? They “met and fell in love” at Muddy Boots in 2009. “I would hang out here with my computer, and he would come in,” Betsy recalls. “We saw each other in passing, and I thought he was so cute. Eventually he actually talked to me, which now I know is pretty incredible because he’s so shy.” That same year, Betsy says, the coffee shop, located on North Van Buren Street, went up for sale, and the couple decided to buy it. “We knew nothing about owning restaurants,” Betsy says, but that didn’t matter. Their commitment to the café and to one another was great, and since taking over, the pair, who eventually married in December 2010, has worked tirelessly

to make the shop a place to hang out. “We love it,” Betsy says. “It’s very much a locals’ hangout. We are only closed on Christmas Day. We even have a pitchin dinner here on Thanksgiving.” The quirky shop offers a “locals” table where regulars come for fellowship every morning and where they’re encouraged to stay as long as they’d like. The shop offers a “bottomless” cup of coffee to also entice guests to hang around. “We don’t ever really think you should leave,” Betsy says. “We try to be here as many hours as we can so the shop can always be available to customers.” Now, four years into owning their coffee shop, you can say the couple know a thing or two about owning a restaurant—so much so that they decided to go in on the purchase of the Pine Room Tavern with co-owner Jody Bonifield in 2012. Now, they’re making changes at the Pine Room to keep locals coming in for more entertainment, drinks and good eats—and each new investment, Betsy says, gives the

couple a way to support the local scene. Muddy Boots offers live music seven days a week, she explains, and the walls of the shop are decorated with local art for sale, including works by James, also an artist. The Oblacks had a stage built in the coffee shop to allow musicians a place to play nightly. They also work to offer the best coffee and baked goods they can find. Muddy Boots features a special house blend that the Oblacks source from the Brown County Coffee Co. “We also have a dark roast,” Betsy says, “as well as espressos, cappuccinos and everything. We were just talking about how we baby our espresso machine. It even has a filtration system for the water.” Also on the menu—beyond the undeniable community-minded atmosphere—are an ever-changing array of homemade baked goods, including pies, gluten-free cobblers, muffins and vegan and vegetarian offerings. And if that’s not all: Breakfast is served all day.

The Daily Grind The oldest coffee shop in town, The Daily Grind, got its start in 1977. But its current owners didn’t take over the reins (and the coffee machines) until 1994. Prior to purchasing the shop, Hal and Karis Johnson had been living in Georgia. The Johnsons had been to Brown County to visit because Hal had family in the area, he says, and, because of those visits, his wife, Karis, “fell in love with the place.” Eventually, Karis hoped to move to Brown County, and when the chemical plant Hal worked for shut down, the couple felt they had good reason for a new start. Hal also thought it was a good time for a career change, and when he heard word that The Daily Grind was up for sale, he decided owning a coffee shop might be as good a choice as any. “We got wind this place was for sale, and we figured if anyone could do it, we could do it,” he says. And he was right. “We had to learn on the fly—a manager came with the place, and he told me a lot,” Hal says. “I’ve also learned a lot on my own.” Hal says he and his wife researched everything when they bought The Daily Grind, and experience has gone a long way to teach the owners, too. Whatever the lessons, the Johnsons have taken the town’s oldest coffee shop and turned it into a long-standing popular stop for both locals and area guests. Hal explains that oftentimes visitors to Brown County make a point of stopping in when they come to town. “I get people from out of state who always come in when they’re in the area,” he explains. “We’re the first place they come to when they come to Nashville, and we’re the last place they come to before they leave.”

Over the years, business has grown. “We sell more coffees than ever,” he says. What they don’t sell in the store, the couple market through the Web. “We mail coffee out all the time,” he explains. “We have a website and a 2-pound minimum order. We sell so much coffee that way—it’s crazy.” For food, The Daily Grind is known for its “Belgian waffles and eggs,” Hal says, Hours: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. We’ve been blessed” in the coffee business, the humbled owner says. “I thought I’d be rich by now. That doesn’t seem to be happening, but we sure do get a lot of good people who come in here.”

Brown County Coffee Co. Nick Schultz picks up the phone to discuss his coffee-roasting venture, Brown County Coffee Co., which he and his wife, Audrey, started approximately six years ago, and he quickly explains that he’ll be multitasking during the conversation. “I’m in the last minute of a roast,” he says. What does that last minute entail? “We’re trying to amplify the smoke flavor, so we shut off the air supply and let the bean absorb its own smoke,” he explains. “(The end result) tastes leathery and smoky. You can smell the smoke when you’re brewing.” The Schultzes, both coffee enthusiasts prior to starting their business, began roasting their own beans in 2005 because they were already making their own espressos at home and roasting the beans was another way “to own the process,” Nick explains.

“We were having issues finding wellroasted fresh coffee in the area.” In 2007, they turned coffee roasting into a business because the couple “needed a night job,” to bring in more income, he says, “because we had some serious medical bills from the birth of our two children.” That night job has quickly turned to a day job, and an evening job, and a weekend job for the entrepreneurs. Their success has come in part due to the quality of their products, but—in the beginning—it developed simply because Nick hit the streets. He went doorto-door to local restaurants to market the coffee beans they were roasting. As the couple have grown their business, they had to move to a larger location on Greasy Creek Road to roast and store their beans, approximately a ton of which is delivered to the warehouse each week. And all the coffee that comes in goes out quickly. “We try and never sell a product that’s over a month old,” he says. “We’re the only people in Indiana who put dates (of when the coffee was roasted) on our bags.

“Fresh-roasted coffee with a date on the bag makes all the difference from a consumer’s perspective,” he explains. “Coffee is more like a bread product as far as how quickly you want to consume it. People are conditioned all over the world to accept stale coffee. Get your hands on something that is hours off the roaster. It has an amazing complex flavor. There’s nothing else like it.” Brown County Coffee Co. supplies customized house blends to local restaurants and cafes, like Muddy Boots Café and The Hobnob, and it also sells to Bloomingfoods Market and Deli in Bloomington, where shoppers can buy beans by the bag. During warmer weather, the Schultzes also do big business at the Bloomington Farmers Market, where lines form quickly to get a fresh cup of their brews. In the end, Nick says he has always felt entering into the coffee-roasting business was a good plan. “We knew that there were all these people who had never had a truly fresh coffee product,” he says. “We knew their reaction would be like ours was … like ‘Where has this been all my life?’” •

Snow-capped hills of winter, vibrant greens of spring and summer, and the brilliant autumn leaves make any season a special time of year in Brown County, which is why so many visitors continue to flock to the area. And, if you ask us, sometimes there’s nothing better than slowing down to take it all in. And, by that we mean slowing way down—to trotting speed. Trail rides, pony rides and hayrides are all available at the Brown County Saddle Barn, located inside the north gate entrance to Brown County State Park (off State Road 46; 812-988-8166). The Saddle Barn is open Monday through Saturday through Nov. 4, and guests can come between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. daily to choose from a 3.3-mile trail ride (approximately one hour; $25 per person), a 2.2-mile trail ride (approximately 35 minutes; $15 per person) or a hayride for $3 per person (children, 3 and younger, ride for free). Parentassisted pony rides are available for kids at $2 per lap, and children must be at least 7 years old to ride on the trails. Make sure to bring your own horse if you’re hoping to take a self-guided trek along one of Yellowwood State Forest’s designated horse trails (772 S. Yellowwood Road, 812-9887945). Approximately 10 miles of horse trails wind through the forest. If you wish to stay overnight, 12 primitive horseman camping sites (no outlets; no water hook-ups) are centrally located and are available year-round. Each site has room for six horses, says Katie McPherson, forest secretary, and the sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis. But don’t worry: “That campground is very rarely filled up,” McPherson says, because most riders don’t want to travel with their equine companions. When you arrive, go ahead and set up your campsite, she adds, then head to the office to register and pay—it costs $12 a night per site. As if you don’t have enough reason to visit the Story Inn (a cozy inn, a charming restaurant, a quaint basement bar and a good ghost story or two), it abuts a horse trail in picturesque Brown County State Park. With a place to tie up your horses and a 5- to 6-acre pasture where they can run, the inn (6404 State Road 135, 800-881-1183) makes it “very easy for people to have their campfire breakfast, saddle their horse, have lunch or a beer and then ride out,” says Kevin Allen, acting manager at Story. If you’re itching to take a longer ride than what the adjoining trail in the park offers, there are plans in the works to offer guests a ride that starts 60 miles to the south of Story, Allen says. “People would start there and do an all-day ride, Photo by Kathy Rondomanski

pasture their horses here, water them, take care of them, have dinner, (stay the night and then) they have breakfast, we hand them a brown bag lunch and they’re on their way.” At press time, the details for such a ride were still being finalized. What Allen could tell us: Spaces are available to board approximately eight horses per night in 12-by-12 stalls ($40 a night per horse; water is also available for horses, though you will need to bring your own hay or grain and a release form from your veterinarian showing your horse has all its shots). You can also stay the night at Rawhide Ranch (1292 S. State Road 135, 812-988-0085), where horseback rides are the real deal, says Derek Clifford, ranch manager. “The ranch is a beautiful piece of property. The atmosphere is familyfriendly,” he explains, “and when they come here, it’s a real cowboy or cowgirl that takes you on a trail ride.” A maximum of 10 horses are taken out for each hour-long ride ($20 for overnight guests; $30 for the public) through the ranch’s 54 acres of land. “We offer rides at 10, 11, noon, 2, 3 and 4 p.m.,” Clifford says. But you want to make reservations and arrive early for your scheduled time. “We demonstrate to you how to ride before you go, how to steer your horse, where to sit in the saddle,” he says. “You see how it’s done from someone who has knowledge and experience.” Brown County Almanack Visitors Guide | Spring 2013

These lessons are important, Clifford stresses, because the ranch has an impeccable safety record—one the owners would like to keep. “2013 will be our 12th year of business that we’ve never had an ambulance here due to horses,” Clifford says. “That’s a claim we’re really geared to keep.” With safety in mind, children under 7 aren’t allowed to ride alone, the tours are walking guided rides only, and— though the ranch is open year-round—if weather isn’t optimal, rides will be canceled. “If we don’t feel it is safe enough, we’re not going to take anybody,” he says. “It’s also for our horses. We can’t let them get hurt.” For $5 each, even the littlest of guests (children under 7) can also take “pony rides,” Clifford says—though the “pony” isn’t a pony at all. “We don’t use ponies. They’re terrible critters. They have a short-horse complex,” he explains. Schooner Valley Stables (2282 W. State Road 46, 812-9882859) caters to people who have ridden horses before and want to go faster than just a walk, as well as to young kids who are too young to ride by themselves, says Luke Robertson, owner. But things haven’t always been at such a controlled pace. Luke’s Grandpa Charlie Robertson, the man who started this family affair, “had a farm here, and he got this wild hare to build a racetrack out front,” Luke says. never raced horses on that track, what Charlie did do was offer guests rides around the track on a few ponies and horses—of course, for a small fee. Eventually, Luke explains, Charlie grew his business and blazed a trail through Yellowwood State Forest to lead rides there. “I hear stories all the time about crazy trail rides that Grandpa gave,” Luke says. “From what they say, he had people riding wild mustangs … this was back in the days when lawsuits were not really a possibility.” These days, when guests’ safety is of upmost importance, Luke says trail guides can increase the pace for more experienced guests only. “We pick it up to third gear, I guess you could say,” explains Luke, who took over the family business four years ago. Hour-long trail rides cost $30 a person; it costs each guest $45 for an hour-and-a-half and $60 for two-hour trails. Rides are available at 11 a.m., and 1, 3 and 5 p.m. seven days a week. From Thanksgiving through the second weekend in March, Schooner is open only on the weekends by appointment. Reservations need to be made 24 hours in advance, he says, “and (the temperature) has to be above 33 degrees.” Even better: There’s more to just riding at Schooner. the Indiana Wine Fair has grown to become the largest event featuring Indiana wines. The Story Inn provides the first 4,000 participants with a free keepsake wine glass. Parking is free, with priority given to those vehicles with three or more passengers. The Story Inn also provides free shuttle service to and from this event, with buses leaving the Nashville Courthouse every 15 minutes, starting at noon.
