Old Meets New in a 100 year old home
NaNcy crocker is the proud innkeeper and owner of the Olde Magnolia House Inn and 4th Sister Vintage store. She bought the over 100 year old home back in early spring of 2013 and has been busy redecorating the upstairs bedrooms to match her “Make something old, something new” philosophy. Whether you are coming to browse her extensive collection of vintage and repurposed items in the store or spending the night in one of three themed guest rooms upstairs, she always has a big smile, a warm hello and a story to share for or just relax. Each room is named after everyone. Nancy knows no strangers. an artist that was living during the era the house was built. Cable Smart TVs, pod coffeemakers, lots of extra blankets and pillows make each room comfy yet modern.
The Renoir Room is one of the three guest rooms in the Olde Magnolia House Inn
Nancy had the help of her sisters, daughter and niece, who spent months cleaning and de-cluttering the house after she purchased it. They brought the history laden home into the technological age but still maintained its original charm. One guest said “It’s like being in my room and my grandmother’s room at the same time.” There are three separate bedrooms upstairs for overnight guests, each with their own private, locked entrance and bath. There is a common area where guests can gather to play a board game, read a book

4th SiSter ViNtage Store on the main floor is Nancy’s true passion. She named the store in honor of being the 4th sister…the youngest, who for the most part received hand-me-downs from her three older sisters. She began up-cycling at an early age with some of her sisters’ Christmas present boxes and the desire continued to grow over the years. She becomes obsessed with certain items and styles: outdoor tables and chairs, movie themes, magazine racks, and chairs. Once she finds the perfect item, she brings it back in her big red truck (Cliff), and begins the refurbishing process in her newly built garage in the back. It is already overflowing with found objects which she is willing to custom design just for you! 213 South Jefferson Street OldeMagnoliaHouseInn.com 4thSisterFurnitureCo.com 614.638.8849

Cinnamon Toast Crunch flakes as shingles. M&Ms as fallen leaves, strewn about the chocolaty yard. Seeing a room full of Brown County cabins made entirely out of edibles has a way of making you look differently at food. That creativity has captured the imagination of dozens of locals and visitors for the past three years. Starting Sunday, Nov. 24, the fourth annual Create it with Gingerbread Log Cabin Competition will delight a whole new audience of admirers, at a new location: The Brown County Inn. Local food entrepreneur Mary Howard — co-founder of Hootie Doot salad dressing company — came up with the idea after watching the National Gingerbread House Competition in Asheville, N.C., on TV. Why not do one in Nashville, Ind., with a twist? “This is such a great county, full of log cabins and culinary art and different kinds of architecture, these are things we should promote,” she said.

“This is such a great county, full of log cabins and culinary art and different kinds of architecture, these are things we should promote.” —Mary Howard
Each year, more than two dozen adults, teens and children from throughout Indiana have rolled, stacked, frosted and sprinkled to build a wide variety of edible — and very detailed — houses. Icing carefully festooned along the banisters of a rustic porch. Stone fireplaces delicately crafted with individual rock candies. Ma in her apron, complete with makeup and heels, painstakingly constructed from fondant.
The local judges give more points for those who build actual cabins as opposed to flat-walled houses, and to those who actually build them out of gingerbread as opposed to ready-made “logs,” like pretzel rods. That’s tough, Howard knows. “My daughter and I made one — of course, we didn’t enter it — and we had to bake it a couple of times before we could get it to stand,” she laughed. “That makes me appreciate the people who compete even more.”
Sheri Gow and her two sisters travel from the Valparaiso area each year to enter their cabin. Gow, an autumn Brown County visitor for more than 25 years, learned about the contest a few months before the inaugural year, in 2010, when stopping by the Brown County Visitors Center. Sister Vicki had been making gingerbread houses for 20-plus years, but had never entered a contest. Sheri told her about this one, thinking they could do it for the following year.

“Why wait until next year?” Vicki told her, and the three sisters started to work. They were awarded an honorable mention in 2010. Sheri has followed up that honor each year since, with second-place, Best Interior and first-place awards. The group started construction on their 2013 house on Oct. 16. Sister Sandy makes a mock-up out of cardboard and foam board — sometimes more than one if revisions are needed.
This year’s creation is an homage of sorts to their 90-year-old father. It’s based on an old photo they found when preparing for his birthday in the spring, of a general store they think his family operated in Kentucky. “The Mercantile” will include all sorts of tiny, edible details that have become the sisters’ trademarks. Sheri shops all year long for candies that might become house parts. This year, she’s excited to try a new
product — “sugar sheets” — as bolts of cloth in the mercantile’s inventory. Howard said participants spend anywhere from one evening to an entire year planning and building their entries, and at least $50 for the materials, “depending on how clever you are.” But someone who’s never held a frosting gun needn’t be discouraged. An expert from Wilton food crafting company will conduct a workshop for

children ages 6 to 12 Saturday, Nov. 16 at the Brown County Inn. For $25, all supplies will be furnished for budding bakers to construct a flat-walled gingerbread house, and decorate it. The Gingerbread Log Cabin Competition includes a children’s division for entrants 11 and younger. The first-place teen winner in Nashville’s 2011 contest enjoyed the experience so much, she went on to place second in the national contest the next year, Howard noted. The Gow sisters plan to make a weekend of the contest in Brown County — shopping downtown, gathering ideas for next year’s log cabin creation at the exhibit, and taking them back home to begin it all again. It’s become a new family holiday tradition. “We’ve talked about going other places, but we really like the whole atmosphere,” Sheri said.

The original Big Woods Brewing Co. on Molly’s Lane is a popular hangout for locals and visitors alike.
Quaff ON! Jeff McCabe is sitting at a table in Big Woods Pizza, watching construction workers outside. They’re tossing roofing tiles three stories down onto a spread-out tarp. At some point, they’ll start work on a new project, which McCabe calls Big Woods Village. But that is in the future. Right now, he’s talking about the company’s newly completed brewing facility, Quaff ON!, housed in a building which was once the local historical society. He goes through the stats: Two 930-gallon brew tanks. Two 465-gallon brew tanks. New bottling equipment. A huge grain separator and cooking vat. This expansion makes Big Woods Brewing Co. one of the largest single employers in Brown County, and that is good news for beer drinkers near and far. “Right now we’re brewing at a rate of about 4,000 barrels a year,” McCabe said. “And now, our task is not as difficult as it was four years ago, because we’ve developed a culture here. Our big strength right now is that we have a strong, core group of people.”

Big Woods Beer fans from around the state can soon find their favorite beer even after leaving Brown County.
Big Woods Brewing Co. already sells beers at many local stores, like Hoosier Buddy in Nashville, Big Red Liquor in Bloomington and Cork Liquor in Columbus. The new facility on State Road 135 just north of town will allow for even wider distribution across the state. For local visitors, that means a wider variety of beer in Brown County, and a better chance of finding a Big Woods brew when they go home. This year, the brewery has a handful of seasonal beers for fall and winter. For the autumn season, look for Hunter’s Moon Pumpkin Ale. Going
into winter, Big Woods will be releasing Sadie the Goat Brown Ale. McCabe says this beer is an homage to women everywhere, and is named after a river pirate named Sadie, who was known for head-butting men. Big Woods is a homegrown Brown County enterprise formed in 2009 by McCabe and business partners Ed Ryan and Tim O’Bryan. In downtown Nashville, the company includes two restaurants where Big Woods beer is served: at the original brewery in Molly’s Lane, and at Big Woods Pizza on Van Buren Street across from the courthouse.

Cedar Creek Winery Across town, there’s a new face on the Nashville wine tasting scene. Cedar Creek Winery opened on Labor Day and has been quietly stirring things up with a selection of sweet wines. Store manager Alyssa Elsner says as fall continues, visitors should check out the company’s Rhapsody Red Merlot. For winter time, she recommends the Twilight White Pinot Gris. The 3-year-old company ferments with grapes imported from New York and California. However, the owners are currently working to expand their own vineyards near Martinsville to allow them to make wine from their own grapes. “Next August, we’ll have our first harvest, and we’ll be making a Traminette and Catawba,” Elsner said.

Bear Wallow Distillery There’s a long tradition of moonshining in Brown County, and the Spagnuolo family plans to capitalize on this market — in a legal way. By next spring, they’ll be operating the first commercial stills in Brown County, in Gnaw Bone. Bear Wallow Distillery will focus on all varieties of hard liquor, from “moonshine” to rum. However, they plan to specialize in whiskey. “Obviously, we’ll be starting with unaged products, like moonshine,” said Adam Spagnuolo, the elder statesman of the family business. “Then, we’ll move on to barreling and aging different whiskeys.” His wife, Susan, said the company plans to use only Indiana produce for their product. “A lot of Indiana corn goes to Kentucky to make Kentucky bourbon,” she said. “We’d like to trap a little of that Indiana corn and make Indiana bourbon.” But don’t expect to see any Bear Wallow Distillery products this season. The government shutdown put many of the company’s permits on hold. In spite of this setback, the Spagnuolo family plans to start bottling sometime in spring, and offer tasting rooms in Gnaw Bone and Nashville.

can cause cabin fever, and a new year can bring resolve you hope remains by the time warmer weather returns. If you want help with a cure for both, you might want to try the Winter Wellness Weekend taking place in Brown County State Park Jan. 17, 18 and 19. The schedule is comprised of three events: the Winter Hike, the Frosty Trails 5-Mile and Warm Up From Within (WUFW). The weekend offers an array of indoor and outdoor activities such as yoga, running or walking a 5.2-mile course, and listening fireside to an expert talking about the outdoors.

WUFW
Organizer Lee Edgren says Warm Up From Within is designed primarily for adults seeking a new way to support a change in their life. It’s also for people who really enjoy sessions on stress reduction, nutrition, dance, yoga and a long list of other methods of exploring mind, body and spirit. “It’s fun! And, it may even be meaningful,” Edgren said. The classes and short workshops take place in the Abe Martin Lodge all three days of the Winter Wellness Weekend. The WUFW portion of the event is in its third year. Edgren called it unique for a number of reasons. “The concept, the pricing, the organization are all unusual,” she said. New Year resolutions often fall to the wayside shortly after being made. A goal of the event is to stop that from happening. “One of my hopes is that WUFW will help deepen the motivation, as well as add practices that will actually lead to achieving the changes we know would improve our lives,” she said. Edgren sees “deep inner motivation” as an essential part of changing a behavior. Her programming – from private sessions about addiction to sound meditation to learning about one of the world’s oldest medical systems – reflects that belief. “A lot of popular information on change encourages deprivation, and it just doesn’t work. So, this is an opportunity to joyously explore information and practices in your own sweet way, without anyone looking over your shoulder,” she said. New to the lineup are Tai Chi, Qigong and an Addiction Recovery Support meeting. New sessions include “Deepening the Journey: Stepping Through Obstacles and Fears on the Path to Your Dreams,” “The Meanings of Our Life: How Words Shape Beliefs, and Beliefs Shape Us,” and “For Whom and When Is Something Healthy?” which is an introduction to Ayurveda, an ancient system of thought about maintain-

ing health. Participants will also explore mandala painting and mystic poetry. Two sessions have been offered all three years — “Shake Your Soul” dance with Kathy Anderson and “Healing Meditation” with Janiece Jaffe. Edgren said for a reasonable rate, she brings in outstanding teachers from a 100mile radius of Nashville. The early bird cost for the weekend is $50, until Dec. 25, when it increases to $65. “The teachers get most of the money. I hope we go on for a long time, because there are so many good teachers and so many exciting combinations. I want this to be a win for the participants, the teachers, and the community,” she said.
The hike and run
Jim Eagleman, interpretive naturalist for Brown County State Park, said the Winter Wellness Weekend formed from a single
event more than 13 years ago. The Winter Hike began as a way to get people outside into the winter wonderland in the park, which, like all state parks and reservoirs, stays open year-round. Just as they still do, Boy Scouts served hot chocolate and interpreters along the trails passed on knowledge about the outdoors along two self-guided trails. The event, in the past, offered breakfast and lunch and usually wrapped up by noon. In recent years, Edgren and Bill Bartley of the Indiana Running Company in Bloomington approached Eagleman about adding wellness activities and a run now called the Frosty Trails 5-Mile. “The three activities give people a nice choice in an otherwise quiet time,” he said. The event coincides with the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, so families have time off from work and school to participate. Hundreds attend each year, but
weather impacts those numbers. Eagleman said many love to run and hike with snow falling, but fewer folks like cold and rainy weather. Eagleman encouraged people to attend as a good way to test new winter gear and explore their limits – “Know how far you’re good for a walk,” for example. “Be sure to bring water and sunscreen and enjoy nature in winter,” he said. Admission into the park costs $5 for in-state residents. To run on Saturday, Jan. 18, the cost is $25 a person. The hike the same day is $1. For more information, contact Edgren at River Light Yoga at 812-988-9642, Bartley at bill@nrunco.com or Eagleman at the park’s Nature Center at 812-988-5240.
