The story behind the spelling of ‘Almanack’. Well, it’s a tradition. “Kin” Hubbard, creator of those cartoony figures you see around Nashville, drew “Abe Martin of Brown County” for the Indianapolis News from 1904-1930. The Abe Martin character offered wit and wisdom with a questionable grasp on English, but a firm root in old-time practicality. Hubbard published five “Almanack”s full of Martin’s sayings, intended as parodies of “Poor Richard’s Almanac” or the “Old Farmer’s Almanac.” Brown Countian Tom Hensely published the first Brown County Almanack in 1965, retaining the Hubbard spelling and sensibility. The Brown County Democrat revived the tradition in the early 1970s, and has carried on quarterly ever since.

each
year—on the Saturday after Thanksgiving—the Nashville Express Train rolls through town with a special guest, Santa Claus, sitting atop its engine. The ride serves as Santa’s big introduction, kicking off a series of “Santa Sightings” weekends during which Father Christmas, and his wellknown wife, Mrs. Claus, settle into a spot in front of the Brown County Visitors Center to greet holiday revelers. There, Santa and Mrs. Claus welcome and encourage little (and sometimes not-so-little) guests to sit on Santa’s lap and to share with him their greatest holiday desires. Sitting in Santa’s seat is a big job, says Tom Vornholt, local real estate agent and president of the Brown County Economic Development Commission—and he should know. Vornholt is about to enter his fourth season donning the red suit. He has been pulling holiday shifts in full Santa gear for more than a decade, but there are only “a select few who know I’m doing it here in town,” Vornholt says. He plays the role of Santa the entire first weekend of the “Santa Sightings” series. For each weekend after, fire department volunteers help handle Santa’s duties. As for Vornholt, he says he got his start dressing as Santa for his nieces and nephews. “My sister had a Santa Claus suit, and they asked if I would be willing to do that,” he says. “It was one of the most amazing experiences I’ve ever had.” Vornholt credits the surprised responses of his younger relatives for making him fall in love with playing the role. Since those early appearances, he regularly gets asked to attend private events and holiday parties as Santa, and he’s always ready to hop the train into town to spread good cheer.
16
Brown County Almanack Visitors Guide | winter 2011
But Vornholt is quick to point out that he doesn’t make money from his efforts. “I don’t think Santa should get paid,” he explains. “Santa should offer his jolly and joy at his own cost.” Vornholt often surprises his guests when he refuses payment. “People are really taken aback by that,” he says. “Every year people think I have to charge them to have their pictures taken with me. I tell them: ‘Here in Nashville, Santa is free.’” Getting to see the expressions of his littlest fans is payment enough, he explains. Each day, Santa and Mrs. Claus take a break from their post at the Visitors Center to stroll through town together. “We walk into restaurants and get people singing. We go into stores,” he says. “Kids see us walking through town, and they go bonkers. They come running up to tell us what they want for Christmas. “One of the more fun things, though, is not only seeing the kids’ faces, but seeing the elderly people who want to come and sit on my lap,” he adds. “They can’t wait to tell Santa what they want for Christmas. It’s like they’re kids again.” And as for what people want? “I had one lady who told me: ‘I need a new husband,’” he says. “I said, ‘Well, I’ll see what I can do.’ You get a lot of neat requests. I had one kid bring me 10 pages of computergenerated printouts of what he wanted. I also had one girl who wanted a new mom because her mom had passed away. That really rips at you.” Vornholt says Santa has a specific gift on his wish list, too. “If there was one gift I wish I had in this world,” he explains, “it would be that, when they ask me for a gift, I could pull it out of a bag and just hand it to them.”

[Cold Cases] what to do and wh ere to go We’ ve solved the mystery on . en it’s beyo nd chi lly out side in Brown Cou nty—e ven wh
Just because it’s nearly freezing (or, more than likely, below freezing) outside doesn’t mean you need to hibernate in your home. Convinced there is still plenty to enjoy around Brown County during the cold weather months, we asked Jamie Newton, the communications director of the Brown County Convention and Visitors Bureau, to help us compile a list. “Many people assume that the county just shuts down during the winter time, and that’s not the case at all,” Newton says. “Shops are still open, restaurants still have delicious food (including chili, my favorite fall/ winter food), live music still goes on, and there’s a lot to get into in the snow!” Here, with a little help from our friend, 10 things to include in your winter-weather schedule. emperatures have plummeted, we’ve huddled in our cozy homes and the holiday season has showered us with a seemingly endless supply of sweet treats. Sounds lovely, doesn’t it? The good news is that winter is a lovely time of year. We can build snowmen. We can toast to our family and friends. We can celebrate the close of another year. And we can eat. And eat. And eat. Which leads us to the other news: On average, Americans gain between five and seven pounds each winter. The truth hurts—but it doesn’t have to. Year-round Pilates and yoga classes and open gym and fitness center sessions are the norm at the Brown County YMCA, but during the winter months membership increases, Executive Director Kim Robinson says, and—because of that—the YMCA offers more programs to meet the county’s needs. Robinson quickly runs through a long list of programs and classes to get members moving this winter. “SilverSneakers is a big thing,” she says, referring to the program that helps older adults take greater control of their health through physical activity. A Medicare supplement for patients, the customized SilverSneakers program helps older adults improve their strength, flexibility, balance and endurance, and seminars educate them on how to better care for their aging bodies. Another popular option with older adults is pickle ball, Robinson says. Offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., pickle ball requires a 3-foot net, a wiffle ball and rackets. “It’s all the rage in Florida at retirement cen-

ters,” she explains, “and it’s pretty fun; it’s like playing ping-pong on the floor.” Beyond the YMCA’s offerings for seniors, the 34,000-square-foot facility— complete with its fitness center, swimming pool, gymnasium and more—plays host to a number of events for middle-age adults and children. Open gym nights feature volleyball sessions on Mondays and basketball on Wednesdays, and the first Saturday of every month is a free community day, Robinson says, where everyone is invited in to get fit for free. Scheduled for Dec. 3, the YMCAsponsored “Reindeer Romp” enters its 12th year and “has really taken off,” Robinson says. “We had over 200 participate last year, and it just keeps growing.” The Romp features an 8K Run and 5K Run/
Walk through Brown County State Park and proceeds from the event go toward the YMCA’s scholarship program for reduced membership fees. Also specific to the season are the Children’s Day Camp, offered to keep kids occupied each day of their schools’ Christmas breaks, and the Parents’ Night Out event, which takes place on Dec. 9 and gives mom and dad a rare “kid-free” evening. For $10 per child, parents can drop their little ones at the YMCA for games, snacks and activities from 6 to 10 p.m. As for 2012, Robinson says new zumba classes and mini-marathon training sessions are in the works, along with a Bodyfor-Life weight management program.
Just in time for New Year’s resolutions, Body-for-Life teaches participants about nutrition, exercise and health—lessons we suspect might help us avoid gaining that extra winter weight in the first place.
