NCDOT TO HOLD PUBLIC MEETING FOR THE PROPOSED WIDENING OF I-40 FROM I-85 TO THE DURHAM COUNTY LINE IN ORANGE COUNTY TIP PROJECT NO. I-3306A The N.C. Department of Transportation will hold a public meeting regarding the proposed widening of 11.4 miles of I-40 between I-85 and the Durham County Line in Orange County. The interstate would be widened by one lane in each direction to bring the highway up to three lanes each way, improving traffic flow along that corridor and helping relieve heavy congestion that develops during commuter times.

The project would also improve the N.C. 86 exit and sections of that highway for several hundred feet both north and south of the interchange.

The meeting will be held on Thursday, January 24 at the Passmore CenterGreat Hall located at 103 Meadowlands Drive in Hillsborough from 4-7 p.m.

The public may attend at any time during the meeting hours. Please note there will be no formal presentation.

At the meeting there will be maps of the proposed plans as well as project team members who will be available to answer your questions and receive feedback.

All comments will be taken into consideration as the project progresses. The opportunity to submit written comments will be provided at the meeting or may be done via phone, email, or mail no later than February 8.

Pennywise, Pound Foolish Last week, Leigh Tauss reported on the Wake County Board of Commissioners’ decision—at its first meeting after two new commissioners were sworn in—to sell land the county had purchased for $4 million just last year for a park in the Crooked Creek neighborhood.

Former county commissioner Erv Portman, a park supporter who lost a contentious primary last May, writes in to voice his dismay: “The decision by the new leadership of the Board of Commissioners is disappointing in so many ways. First, they claimed the process to buy the parkland was rushed—two years of review and public discussion. Their decision came about during three weeks over Christmas with two new board members who admit to knowing little to nothing about the purchase. Second, the motion to sell is a direct violation of the board’s own rules for reconsideration. Why this was allowed I don’t understand. There were no new facts or changes, just a desire to legitimize the lie they created that the purchase was ‘crooked.’ Third, the ability of the board to lecture the citizens about privilege was over the top, but not surprising, as they have been implying it for a year.

“Fourth, to issue a call for public comment, then listen for six hours, then read a position that was written before anyone commented, confirms that minds were made up before the first citizen spoke. They conducted a charade of asking for input.

This is not good government but rather a new low for Wake County. Fifth, those who lost the vote last year railed about how a 4–3 decision is wrong, but their rushed 3–4 decision is somehow justice?

“Sixth, chairwoman Jessica Holmes’s comment after the vote was subtle but stunning. The board had just voted to sell land they deemed surplus through an upset bid procedure. The law for upset bids exists to be sure the taxpayers get the highest price for the sale. After the vote, the chair said she did not plan to sell the land to the highest bidder, contrary to the motion she just voted for. She did not disclose this distinction during her comments before the vote, implying she has yet another plan that she has not disclosed.

“This is a new low for Wake County.”

“Seventh, the board’s first action as a new board is contrary to the voters’ approval [in November] of a $120 million bond package for new parks and open space.

“Finally, how the board can deny the bought-and-paid-for, play-to-pay reality of their primary race, in which a handful of wealthy liberal donors financed the overwhelming majority of both winners’ campaigns, is as bold a deception as I have ever seen in public office. The saddest part is local government was always above this nasty stuff. Now it’s swimming in it.

“The $4 million in sale funds will be gone faster than a raindrop on a hot iron; the land would have served generations to come forever. How’s that for pennywise and pound foolish?”

On Facebook, Susan C. Eaton asks: “What is it with politicians everywhere increasingly acting like spoiled two-year-olds? And why are politicians increasingly willing to be bought and then dedicating their careers to special favors for the largesse from their rich campaign donors over objective governing of all of their constituents?”

“Great reporting,” adds Doug Ahrens.

“Very helpful to know who is funding these sham decisions. I find it funny that Commissioner Greg Ford claims pay-to-play for reps holding a rally for residents who want the park, yet he’s clearly a pay-to-play guy for his big cash-money donors. Please keep tabs on where this property is sold and how much it costs the county—including the legal costs to fight the lawsuits that are surely coming. I’d bet just keeping the land would have been cheaper, regardless of its ultimate use.”

The city council is expected to approve the scope of the commission at its January 22 meeting. After that, the city attorney will start writing bylaws, and the city will advertise seats on the commission.

employee collective bargaining. The council also plans to add raising the statewide minimum wage—currently $7.25 per hour— to $15 per hour. (Ironically, North Carolina was the first state to enact a $15 minimum wage for state government employees.)

While the workers’ assemblies that gave way to the commission will continue, Graham says that having a formal, city-affiliated body is key to ensuring its success. If workers bring their complaints to public forums held by a board that communicates with the city council, employers may feel more pressure to correct problems. Advocates hope it will be a tool to help people organize and seek solutions.

Affiliation with the city also brings resources. The groups behind the commission want a comprehensive study of workers’ rights in Durham, in part to inform the Workers’ Bill of Rights, and the commission should help deliver that. Graham says the commission will also be able to track problems—like alleged wage theft—in a way the informal workers’ assembly can’t.

Forming the commission, Graham says, sends “a clear, official signal” that workers’ rights are a priority in Durham. While the city’s strategic plan emphasizes “shared economic prosperity,” he notes the document has more to say about fostering development than supporting workers.

“If you look at our strategic plan, if you look at the website, if you look at a lot of the language in the city, there’s a lot of emphasis on making Durham a good place for businesses, and there’s been basically none around making it a good place for workers,” Graham says. “We think this is a very clear indication: That is going to change.” swillets@indyweek.com

A Long, Hard Slog

THE DHA IS FOCUSING ITS REDEVELOPMENT PLANS ON DOWNTOWN PROPERTIES, BUT EVEN THAT’S GOING TO TAKE AT LEAST A DECADE BY SARAH WILLETS

N

early a year after the Durham Housing Authority broke ground on the first of its redevelopment projects, the agency’s plans for a full-scale redo of its public housing properties are honing in on downtown Durham.

The housing authority is redeveloping most of its eighteen hundred public housing units through the federal Rental Assistance Demonstration program. The program lets housing authorities convert units from the historically underfunded public housing program to the Housing Choice Voucher program, which has received more stable funding from Congress. The RAD program also lets housing authorities borrow money, which they typically can’t do, and partner with developers to renovate and rebuild units suffering from years of decline.

The agency is looking to convert its properties into mixed-income and, in the case of some downtown developments, mixed-use neighborhoods, with the aim of increasing Durham’s affordable housing stock.

Between its public housing and voucher programs, the DHA supports the housing of about 4 percent of the city’s population.

The first RAD conversions are underway at Morreene Road and Damar Court.

Unlike other properties, those are being gutted rather than rebuilt. At Damar Court, 24 of 102 units were completed by press time, with another 30 set to reopen by the end of next week.

At Morreene Road, however, the timeline has been slowed because, according to DHA CEO Anthony Scott, the contractor struggled to find workers. No units have been completed, but 40 of 224 should be done by the end of the month. (Both sites were initially expected to be complete in April).

The next site to be redeveloped is J.J. Henderson, a senior housing site with 178 units on Duke Street. The DHA had planned to rebuild the adjacent Oldham Tower and Liberty Street developments on Main Street first, but it determined that J.J. 8 | 1.16.19 | INDYweek.com

projects. But because the city will only get one such award a year, the redevelopment of the DHA’s downtown properties alone will take at least ten years. That means it could be a decade before some sites outside of downtown, such as McDougald Terrace, Cornwallis Road, and Hoover Road, undergo redevelopment. (Laurel Oaks, a newer development, will see cosmetic updates beginning in March—work that was supposed to happen last year.)

“The focus has been very narrow on downtown,” Scott says.

Scott says all 447 DHA units downtown will be replaced, but it’s likely more will be added. He estimates that the number of units at the adjacent Oldham Tower and Liberty Street developments could double. There’s also plenty of unused land at the fifty-fiveunit Forest Hill Heights, and Fayette Place— a twenty-acre DHA-owned site south of the Durham Freeway—is totally vacant. All told, the agency owns fifty acres downtown.

Along with other housing authorities, Scott is hoping to convince the N.C. Housing Finance Agency, which administers low-income housing tax credits, to change its rules so that housing authorities can use the credits to redevelop more of their properties faster, perhaps by exempting them from the competitive 9 percent credit application process, setting aside credits for redevelopment projects, or giving the authorities a bonus to boost their chances of getting an award.

Until that happens, the DHA will be forced to drag out redevelopment plans, making residents wait longer for updated housing and driving up project costs.

“There has to be another approach the state is willing to take for housing authorities that are taking a more comprehensive strategy,” Scott says. “The state of North Carolina really needs to figure out a way to support the most vulnerable population of households out there.” swillets@indyweek.com

The End of Silent Sam

J

ust like that, it was gone. All that was left was an empty foundation where the remnants of the most divisive symbol in Chapel Hill had stood for a century. It had been removed without ceremony, by rope and crane and men in construction vests working in the dead of night, a mere six hours from announcement to disappearance.

Given Silent Sam’s long, fraught history, it was almost anticlimactic.

After decades of complaints from students and faculty, after years of escalating protests culminating in the toppling of the Confederate statue in August, after months of handwringing from UNC officials about what to do next—both with Sam himself and with the monument’s base, still in McCorkle Place, its plaques commemorating students who fought to preserve white supremacy in the “War Between the States”—all it took was a moment of courage, or a flash of defiance, or simply having nothing left to lose, to finish a job begun by antiracism activists long ago.

On Monday afternoon, UNC-Chapel Hill Chancellor Carol Folt informed the UNC Board of Governors during a closed meeting that she was resigning at the end of the semester. Nearly six years earlier, Folt had left Dartmouth to become UNC’s first female leader, taking over a school reeling from an academic fraud scandal. In Chapel Hill, she often found herself navigating the state’s increasingly conservative and sometimes hostile political climate. But over the last two years, the turmoil surrounding Silent Sam had taken center stage and become a source of frustration.

She didn’t like the statue or what it stood for—what Ivy Leaguer would? Her students and faculty didn’t either. But her bosses— the General Assembly and Board of Governors—wanted it to stay. Folt was stuck.

But no more. Now she was free.

In announcing her departure, she flaunted that freedom—and also wrote the first line of her obituary: Not only was she

“As chancellor,” she wrote, “the safety of the UNC-Chapel Hill community is my clear, unequivocal and non-negotiable responsibility. The presence of the remaining parts of the monument on campus poses a continuing threat both to the personal safety and well-being of our community and to our ability to provide a stable, productive educational environment. No one learns at their best when they feel unsafe.”

Following the deadly white-supremacist march in Charlottesville in August 2017 and the toppling of a Confederate monument in Durham a week later, pressure had mounted on Folt to do something about Sam. There were round-the-clock protests, counter-protests, arrests, white-suprem-

acist rallies, police in riot gear deploying tear gas, an activist smearing blood on the statue—the kind of tumult over which no university chancellor wants to preside.

Through it all, she seemed paralyzed, saying her hands were tied by a 2015 law that forbade moving so-called objects of remembrance. Even when Cooper offered her an out—a public-safety exemption—she declined, worried about antagonizing the General Assembly and Board of Governors.

Activists viewed her inaction as complicity. Last summer, they took matters into their own hands.

Folt dutifully called the August 20 downing of Silent Sam “unlawful and dangerous.” But she also didn’t seem sad to see it go: “The monument has been divisive for years, and its presence has been a source of

frustration for many people not only on our campus, but throughout the community.”

But that asinine state law was still there, and it still required Sam to be placed somewhere prominent. Folt didn’t want it to be McCorkle Place, UNC’s “front door,” so, along with the campus’s Board of Trustees, she pitched a $5 million “history and education center” to house it in “context.” This pleased no one. The activists who’d pulled Sam down called it a shrine; Confederate fetishists and conservative groups wanted the monument restored to its former glory; last month, the Board of Governors balked at the price tag, and ordered Folt to go back to the drawing board and report back in March.

This time, it was Folt who took matters into her own hands.

Caught unaware, the Board of Governors was enraged at her decision, which “undermines and insults the Board’s goal to operate with class and dignity,” chairman Harry Smith said in a statement Monday night.

(Having angered the board, Folt announced Tuesday that she’d leave in two weeks.)

By then, though, it was too late. The work crews were already on their way.

Folt’s move was legally questionable, according to UNC associate professor of public law and government Adam Lovelady, and the law seems to require its relocation to a prominent site. But it’s not clear who will expend the political capital to enforce that law. Cooper, who praised Folt, isn’t going to do it. Does the GOP really want to?

It’s one thing to preserve an existing statue in the name of history. It’s quite another to re-erect a Confederate monument, with all it symbolizes, in the year 2019. Is that the battle North Carolina Republicans want to take on heading into 2020, when they’ll share a ballot with Donald Trump?

There’s much to be said about Folt’s tenure at UNC. But at the end of the day, it’s quite likely she’ll have been the one to have forever banished Silent Sam from campus.

I

n all of Raleigh, there are few half-miles in more obvious need of a sidewalk than the beaten dirt path that traces the curb along Fallon Park, a tiny strip of green nestled steps away from Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School and a greenway.

Alongside the park runs Oxford Road, which on any given morning is bustling with activity—not just cars whizzing by, but also joggers trotting by dog walkers, and school children scampering by stroller-hauling mothers.

Most everyone is in the street. They don’t have much choice.

“There are constantly people on that road,” says Brent McConkey, who runs along that stretch in the morning. “It’s not always the safest.”

Five years ago, a resident of this tony community sought to change that, petitioning the city to build a sidewalk along the park. Fifteen of the twenty-two property owners along Oxford Road who responded to a survey told the city they wanted a sidewalk, too. City planners thought it was a good idea as well; this, after all, is the kind of inside-the-beltline neighborhood where the city’s comprehensive plan calls for more pedestrian and bicycle connectivity, especially near parks and greenways.

The project got a green light, and over the next four years, the staff developed the sidewalk, going through multiple design iterations, compromising with neighbors about this or that detail, and spending more

than $20,000 on a consultant to help mitigate environmental impacts, as the sidewalk would run near a small creek.

After all that, it took the Raleigh City Council only fifteen minutes last Tuesday to kill the project.

On the surface, the near-unanimous vote—with only council member Nicole Stewart dissenting—against the $523,000 sidewalk may not seem that important. But the decision, spearheaded by council member Stef Mendell, speaks to a larger issue: the council’s willingness to prioritize the needs of a few vocal residents over its own long-term vision. And that could have dramatic implications for how the city handles tricky growth decisions in the future.

That, after all, is exactly what happened here: A handful of residents complained, and the city council reversed course, casting aside its own policies, years of staff work, and, quite possibly, the sentiments of the majority of the neighborhood.

Among those residents opposing the sidewalk was Rachael Wooten, who attended the city council meeting with a handmade sign reading, “No sidewalk.” As with others in the neighborhood, Wooten worried the sidewalk would damage the roots of the old, beautiful trees lining the park. And, she says, narrowing the road and building the sidewalk on the existing street—as the city’s latest design calls for—could cause problems for residents who park on the street.

Walking through the park Friday afternoon, Wooten paused on a pedestrian bridge as children waded through the creek below.

“Those of us who love this park, we love it as a natural oasis,” Wooten said. “Really, we would just like to leave it as a natural woodland.”

The thing is, according to the city’s planners, none of these concerns were real. They could build the sidewalk within the existing roadway, which wouldn’t compromise the trees. The city also offered to hire an arborist to minimize tree impact and a separate consultant to mitigate effects to the nearby creek, which has already cost $21,000. And while narrowing the road would affect street parking, most residents have driveways—and the narrower road would help calm traffic, says city engineer Brennon Fuqua. Construction could have started later this year.

The city’s 2030 Comprehensive Plan lays out fourteen policies prioritizing the construction and updating of sidewalks throughout the city, with an overall goal of increasing pedestrian safety and access, encouraging alternative transportation, and connecting sidewalks to schools, greenways, parks, libraries, and transit stations.

Since 2013, the city has spent more than $7 million on sidewalks. Thirty-two sidewalk projects are currently being designed or constructed, six of which started from resident petitions. Most of these projects go off without a hitch, but about a half-dozen have been canceled due to neighborhood opposition in the two decades transportation planning manager Eric Lamb has worked for the city.

Sometimes, Lamb says, a new sidewalk represents “a disruption of the status quo.”

For Wooten, the status quo is just fine in Fallon Park. She’s lived in the neighborhood since 1976 and recalls hauling her kids in a stroller down Oxford Road with no problem—no sidewalk necessary. Fixing this non-problem could hurt a park that is already just a sliver of green in a sea of subdivisions, she argues.

City staffers went through several design iterations to appease the sidewalk’s opponents, but they weren’t satisfied. They took their concerns to Mendell, whose district includes their neighborhood, and urged her to stop the project. She took up their case.

But McConkey says he and other residents didn’t get the chance to voice their opinion—that the sidewalk is a no-brainer given the heavy pedestrian traffic, the school, and the greenway—because they didn’t know it was endangered. He thought the sidewalk was a done deal after the 2014 petition passed overwhelmingly. So he didn’t go to any public meetings, nor did he email the council.

“Council member Mendell was hearing from a very small subset of folks opposed to the project,” he says. “She wasn’t hearing from people like me that were in support because we didn’t know she needed to be hearing from us, frankly. She made the motion based on that very vocal minority.”

Indeed, the council is particularly receptive to vocal minorities, especially those concerned about issues related to density and affordability. The onerous regulations the council has proposed for accessory dwelling units and Airbnb—issues over which the council has wrung its hands for years, as elements of new and old Raleigh collided— reflect this tendency as well. In both cases, as with the Fallon Park sidewalk, the council has listened to outspoken residents fearful of change, not those eager to adopt and accommodate innovations that have proliferated in cities across the country.

In local politics, as in life, squeaky wheels get grease. And no matter the issue, those who vehemently oppose an initiative are more likely to flood council members’ inboxes and phone lines than its supporters. So it’s unsurprising that Mendell said last week that, while she’d been inundated with

emails from sidewalk opponents, no one had reached out to her in support of the project.

“Let’s spend the money where it will be appreciated and not impose a sidewalk where it’s not wanted,” she said at the meeting. (The survey showing that residents wanted the sidewalk was a few years old, she pointed out, and there’s been turnover in the neighborhood.)

Stewart disagreed, saying she’d spoken to residents who, in fact, wanted the sidewalk. But in the end, she cast the lone vote against canceling the project. While voting with the majority, Mayor Nancy McFarlane said she felt badly about the amount of work staffers had put into the project.

“It’s tough when we spend that much time,” Lamb says. “If we’re going to kill a project, we’d rather know in the beginning and not invest city resources, the time of staff, the money of hiring a consultant to do the work, the time we spend going out into the community, the time the community takes to spend with the project.”

Susan Hatchell, who chairs the city’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Commission, lives in the neighborhood and was stunned by the council’s decision.

“It’s disappointing news to me because I think it would be a good community project,” Hatchell says. “The sidewalk would provide a lot of safety and an opportunity for wellness and not being in the street, and it’s excellent for traffic-calming the road.”

McConkey hopes the council reconsiders.

“Why would someone be opposed to a sidewalk in 2019? The city’s comprehensive plan talks about how we're trying to promote active, healthy, vibrant neighborhoods,” he says. “This sidewalk would do that, and yet we’re going to reject it. o voluminous is the literary ephemera of Allan Gurganus that it required the brawn of several members of the UNC wrestling team to haul sixty-two boxes from his historic home in Hillsborough to Duke’s Rubenstein Library. Gurganus is famed for his award-winning fiction, which sprawls across centuries and generations of characters; included in his archives are numerous drafts of his three titanic novels and four story collections.

Duke’s acquisition of the archive also highlights Gurganus’s life as a visual artist, from age twelve, when he began selling paintings, and continuing through his art12 | 1.16.19 | INDYweek.com

school stint in the sixties and his time on the deck of a Navy ship in the South Asian Sea, where he was drafted to serve during the Vietnam War. This Thursday’s reading at The Rubenstein Library sets up the conclusion of the exhibit Allan Gurganus: A Writer’s Sketchbooks at Power Plant Gallery, which closes two days later. The INDY visited Gurganus at home to discuss his origins as an artist and a writer, the probability of getting struck by lightning, writing as choreography, and his magnum opus, The Erotic History of a Southern Baptist Church, which is slated to be released in two years.

INDY: What came first, writing or painting?

ALLAN GURGANUS: I started out as a painter. It was my safety as a child to go into my room with a pad and a pen and have some control over my life. It was such a relief to have absolute power over something.

My dad was a respected member of the community but a very strict disciplinarian, so he really didn’t approve of my being an artist or that direction of life. He thought I would starve to death on the street and have to sell apples or something. He actively discouraged me from drawing and painting. Of course, that made me all the more adamant to do it. I sometimes wonder,

I’ve been writing it since the seventies.

It’s really been the book. It’s one of those books that you do a chapter, and then you write another book, and then you write another chapter. Every time you talk to another Baptist, you hear about another sexual experience that happened between the choir director and the preacher or the preacher’s son in the back room, so it’s a continuing saga.

At that rate, how do you know when you’re done?

My editor will tell me. I think he’s already told me. I’m finding a new kind of language for the book. It’s very comical, it’s very sexual, and it’s very spiritual. That’s a big, heady mix, like bartender mixology. I don’t know how many bottles I need to make this thing work, but I know it when I hit it. I’m very excited about it.

I’m extraordinarily grateful to Lucy for having given me that book, in a strange way. This novel is often written in the voice of a “we” figure, which is the voice of the congregation itself. Some very canny, very

You’ve said that a relationship with a choreographer changed the way you observe the world. I’m curious as to how your eyes as an artist also shape the way you look at the world.

Yes, Paul Taylor, the choreographer, was my boyfriend for a couple years, and I loved watching him work. I would go with him to his studio in New York, especially when he was making a new dance. He’d have all the dancers in the room, and he would act it out for them and place them and have chosen the music. It’s very powerful to see. It’s like the book of Genesis, in a way.

You have these bodies, and you begin to move them. I found that inspiring.

I’m very interested in creating large crowds of people in which individual moments are highlighted. From Paul, I learned a lot about highlighting specific gestures or doing theme and variation. With painting, I found that Rembrandt and Caravaggio were extremely exciting as examples of people who could create a very complex pattern, a very crowded scene, and have your eye go straight to the central transaction. I’ve learned a lot about that from choreography.

Readers of Local Souls and some of your other books recognize elements of Rocky Mount or Hillsborough. With this new book, what will readers recognize?

FOR VEGAN COMMUNITY KITCHEN’S CHEF, SADIYE SEZENOL, FOOD IS A TWO-WAY STREET TO HEALING AND HAPPINESS BY LAYLA KHOURY-HANOLD

W

hen Sadiye Sezenol arrives at her restaurant, the other storefronts in Apex’s Plaza 55 shopping center—a Mexican grocery store, Enterprise Rent-a-Car, Subway—are dark. 4:00 a.m. isn’t an unusual start time for pastry chefs, but since Sezenol left her job at SearStone, an upscale retirement community in Cary, she’s up this early not to make cheesecake, but to bake “meat” crafted from grains, vegetables, and flour. The slices and patties are destined for kebabs, burgers, and gyros at Vegan Community Kitchen, which she opened in the former Sweetcheeks Bakery space last week.

Opening a restaurant requires a certain leap of faith, but particularly a vegan restaurant in a nondescript suburban strip mall, and one that specializes in Turkish cuisine, which tends to be meat-heavy. But Sezenol has always dreamed of opening her own restaurant, and she believes in the power of her food to heal, make people happy, and bring them together.

In 2008, Sezenol and her husband, Akin, and daughter, Cansu, moved from Bursa in northwestern Turkey to Huntington Beach, California where Cansu pursued additional college education and Sezenol, a former school teacher, enrolled in culinary classes. While the family arrived in the U.S. with money, Sezenol says that because they lost most of it during the economic recession, they decided to move somewhere with a lower cost of living and where she and her husband could retire. After reading a Forbes article about Cary’s ranking as a top place to retire, Sezenol and her husband visited, fell in love with the area, and relocated in 2010.

Fast forward to March 2014, when Sezenol’s husband was diagnosed with a rare, aggressive form of lymphoma. He began chemotherapy the day after his diagnosis, and on his dietitian’s recommendation that he try a protein-rich vegan diet, Sezenol overhauled her husband’s diet. She made him fresh green juice and fruit juice daily and began substituting in seitan (also known as wheat gluten, the main protein in flour) for meat.

Despite Turkish people’s affinity for meat, veganism wasn’t completely foreign to Sezenol. Her sister, Oya Toris, had become vegan a couple years earlier and opened a vegan restaurant, Community Kitchen, in Istanbul in 2012. Here, Toris perfected her seitan recipe, which combines wheat gluten with lentils and seeds, as well as the herbs and spices found in Turkish kebabs, particularly the Iskender kebab which hails from their hometown. The dish consists of thinly sliced meat served atop pita bread and topped with tomato sauce and yogurt, but pleasantly chewy seitan slices stand in nicely and the “yogurt” sauce is made from rice. (It’s also a signature dish on Vegan Community Kitchen’s menu.)

Akin lived for another four and a half years.

“I think the food saved his life,” Sezenol says. “Food can save your life—it’s a treatment.”

But Sezenol isn’t here to evangelize veganism; she wants to nourish people and make them happy, whether they’re vegan or not, by serving freshly prepared, flavorful food that happens to be plant-based.

Plenty of omnivores eat vegetables as part of a balanced diet, and many vegans don’t want to eat something that approximates meat anyway. Turkish food, like other Mediterranean cuisines, also includes several vegan dishes. The first thing you see when you walk into Vegan Community Kitchen is a deli case of bright salads—pink coins of radishes and pickled turnips, a duo of sweet potatoes and beets, and a medley of green beans, chickpeas, and olives. You’ll also find other Turkish staples, such as falafel bolstered with quinoa, and a trio of hummus that includes a silky classic chickpea, one with roasted beet, and another with avocado.

But Sezenol also respects where she lives and how hard it can be to change one’s traditions, so she added more familiar items such as broccoli mac and cheese, a loaded sweet potato, and burgers.

Sezenol also wants to make vegan food more approachable by changing the perception that it’s expensive. She laments

And, she points out, even if the burger at other places is vegan, the bun likely isn’t, and the food is probably prepared in the same space as meat. Food prepared in a 100 percent vegan kitchen is a bonus for many vegans—and because Sezenol’s kitchen contains no animal products, it is also halal, and she has plans to become certified kosher, too.

This is important for members of the international community, many of whom moved to the area for jobs and for whom

meat is not a part of their culture or regional diet. But no matter how or why you come to the table, Sezenol is certain of one thing.

“This is happy food. I see people gathered around the tables, asking each other what they ordered and sharing their experience about vegan food,” Sezenol says. “They’re talking to one another and building community. Food brings people together.”

As is the case with many who work in hospitality, feeding others and making them happy brings Sezenol joy. But I also sense that this journey has been healing for her, too.

In Turkey, the anniversary of a loved one’s death is traditionally celebrated by sharing food to remember them by. This past Saturday, at the end of the restaurant’s soft opening and on the one-year anniversary of her husband’s death, Sezenol gave her customers rice and beans, her husband’s favorite dish. laylakh@indyweek.com

B

efore I can take in the space at The Kitchen Archive of Raleigh, I’m distracted by the smell and sight of meat sizzling in a cast-iron skillet. Andrew Ullom, the owner of forthcoming bakerycafe Union Special, is searing a piece of rib roast, left over from prepping a batch of roast beef croissants for his next pop-up.

Ullom is one of sixty food business owners who rent space at The Kitchen Archive of Raleigh, an 18,000-square-foot commissary kitchen with gleaming stainless-steel counters, professional-grade stoves, and rows of prep tables and storage racks, that opened in May 2018. It’s the second location for owner and Durham native Will Pettis, who opened The Kitchen Archive of Durham in 2017 as a resource for food trucks. Pettis himself ran the gourmet burger food truck Will & Pop’s for nine years, so he knows firsthand the need for—and limitations of—renting space in a typical commercial kitchen.

Instead of renting time by the hour, which can be cost-prohibitive and challenging to schedule based on fluctuating demand, at The Kitchen Archive, businesses rent shared or private space for a monthly fee and have 24/7 access to communal stoves, prep areas, dish rooms, storage, and more.

Whereas the Durham location is 90 percent food trucks, Raleigh’s mix is more diverse—and offers a glimpse into some of the food trends that will shape what and how we eat in the Triangle in the coming year.

Meal Delivery Is Taking Over As diners want to eat what they want, when they want it, Pettis has seen a boom in the prepared meals industry. Meal delivery businesses such as Fresh From the Kitchen and Tastefully Served deliver healthy, personal chef–cooked dinners—think Spanish paella and vegetarian stuffed peppers—to your door. That “do it on purpose” requires some ambition and bravery, but as Parton has proved over and over again, the rewards for that can be immensely fulfilling. Do you want to wear outrageous ensembles and tease your hair to the clouds? Do you want to make it to the top of your chosen field? Go for it—just make sure to stay kind along the way.

BE ADVENTUROUS In addition to a stunning career as songwriter and performer, Parton’s stardom also includes several big-screen roles (Steel Magnolias! The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas!), a short-lived variety show, an amusement park, and a generous handful of TV specials and movies. Not that you have to do all of that, but maybe you could try challenging yourself from time to time with things that seem like they might be impossible.

KNOW YOUR WORTH After Parton released “I Will Always Love You” in 1974, Elvis Presley expressed interest in recording and releasing his own cover of it. The tradeoff, though, was that Parton would have to sign away half of all of the song’s publishing royalties to Presley. Parton refused. It was her song, after all, so why should someone else get half of her publishing in perpetuity? Though everyone told her she was making a huge mistake, Parton got the last laugh several years later, when Whitney Houston’s cover of it for The Bodyguard became a super-duper-mega-smash-hit.

Both women made a boatload of money. This is all to say: Trust your gut and don’t let some man take your money for your hard work.

For more than fifty years, she’s been a gleaming fixture on the country and pop charts—almost literally, given her predilection for rhinestone-encrusted everything—as well as a larger-than-life personality. She’s in on every joke about her; she made up most of them herself. Behind the big wigs and heavy makeup has always lived a talented songwriter and businesswoman.

Along the way, Parton has maintained her magnificently sharp sense of humor, donated millions to nonprofit causes near to her heart, advocated for the LGBTQIA community, and made herself a wholly inimitable part of pop culture. The second Django Fest is coming to the Cat’s Cradle Back Room, organized by musician and educator Gabriel Pelli. Pelli launched the festival last year as a way to organize a community around the music popularized by Reinhardt. The history of the Roma and Sinti people is complex and includes long periods of

persecution and oppression. During WWII, it was reported that Reinhardt was able to survive only due to the precarious protection of occupied forces that he and some other favored musicians were able to maintain. It’s estimated that between 200,000 and 500,000 Roma and Sinti died in the Holocaust.

The style of music popularized by Reinhardt was a mixture of Roma and Sinti folk musics, American swing, and the French waltzes known as Musette, and is played mostly on smaller stringed instruments, favored due to their portability. Reinhardt was a particularly compelling figure with a

backstory worthy of a shiny biopic (indeed, one was released in 2017 to middling reviews). Born in Belgium in 1910, Reinhardt received his first instrument, a banjo-guitar, at age twelve; he was making a living as a musician by fifteen. At eighteen, Reinhardt was almost killed in a caravan fire, and after recovering from traumatic burns, was able to teach himself to play again despite damage to his left hand that left him with only two fingers to use on the fretboard.

His technique and virtuosity as an adult was formidable and unique, and led to great renown as a musician in France until his early death in 1953. After a decades-long period of relative obscurity, a celebratory festival in Reinhardt’s final home of Samois-sur-Seine, France began a revival that continues to grow today.

But despite the focus on the genre’s most famous figurehead, one of the enduring draws of “Django music” is that it is accessible and community-centered.

“It’s really folk music,” says Pelli, noting that in many ways the musicianship and culture are comparable to bluegrass. “It’s pretty approachable in its easiest forms, and, of course, it can get as complex as any other type of music.”

Each day at this year’s festival at the Cat’s Cradle, guitarists, violinists, and other musicians can attend workshops by members of the headlining groups in the conventions and sound of the genre, with the goal of leaving with one or two songs prepared for a culminating facilitated jam. Pelli hopes to continue to grow the festival in future years to include more European musicians, those who can act as cultural ambassadors for the music and man he and so many others hold dear. music@indyweek.com INDYweek.com | 1.16.19 | 17

The bleak and bludgeoning cop drama Destroyer features Nicole Kidman in a mode we've never seen. Directed by Karyn Kusama (Girlfight), it pushes the violent antihero template into startling new territories and provides a brilliant, if unsettling, cinematic experience.

Kidman is unrecognizable in the role of Erin Bell, an LA detective who looks like she just crawled back from the grave and straight to the bar. Since an undercover assignment went extremely wrong seventeen years ago, Erin has been improvising a kind of long-form suicide, punishing herself with dedicated cruelty. Through a tangled series of narrative switchbacks, we learn what happened then—and why she's gone full psycho now in pursuit of a demonic LA crime figure.

Kusama has delivered an entirely effective piece of filmmaking, but wow, it's rough on the stomach. The violence is designed, in both image and sound, to produce maximum visceral effect. That's the right choice for a film this heavy, but know that this isn't a cartoon heist-film shoot-‘em-up, or even a glammed-out bullet fest in the key of Michael Mann. The physical violence is driven by severe emotional violence, and that's where Kidman does the most damage. Her transformation is just this side of impossible.

When filmmakers put their characters (and their audience) through this kind of trauma, they're obliged to deliver a worthwhile payoff. Kusama and Kidman provide it with a family subplot concerning Erin's teenage daughter, which doesn't fully resolve until the final scenes. Several thematic knots untangle in a procession of surprisingly graceful images. The harrowing journey becomes worth it. The Little Art Gallery that Could A FAMILY-OWNED ARTS-AND-CRAFTS CORNERSTONE SHUTS ITS DOORS AFTER FIFTY YEARS IN RALEIGH

That saga comes to an end on Wednesday, January 16, its last day of business before its owner retires.

Raleigh native Ruth Green had long wanted to open a gallery. After her husband died prematurely, she realized her dream and started Little Art Gallery in the old North Hills Mall in 1968, one of its first tenants. About twenty years ago, the gallery relocated to Cameron Village, a warmly lit oasis with colorful paintings and frames covering almost every inch of its white walls. Although Ruth, who died in 2016, participated in the gallery’s workings for as long as she was able, her daughter, Roseanne Green Minick, took over ownership and operational responsibilities for much of its time in Cameron Village.

During this time, the gallery grew, adding hundreds of local, regional, and national artists with contemporary, abstract, and traditional talents as well as craftspeople specializing in pottery, jewelry, glass-making, woodworks, and more. “To love what you do and what you are selling in a retail environment makes everything worthwhile,” she says. “I enjoyed my days with my artists and customers. I learned that the way you spend your days is the way you spend your life, and you don’t get time back. Even though I will miss the gallery greatly, I know I’ve made the right decision. I am at peace.”

The Little Art Gallery has come to an end, but its history will endure. Those of us left behind—the friends, artists, and customers—are lucky to have had something worth missing. So we reluctantly say goodbye to Roseanne and the Little Art Gallery.

You will be missed. We thought you would be here forever. We were wrong.

“My mom opened the gallery when I was just eleven years old, so I have grown up with it,” Roseanne says. “I hope I have been true to her philosophy of art and operating a retail business. She wanted the arts to be affordable and accessible to everyone in a non-threatening way, regardless of one’s level of appreciation. AN OMNIBUS OF REJECTED PLAYS PROVES THE NAYSAYERS WRONG IN THIS DOESN'T END WELL

I

t takes an incredible amount of resilience to be a playwright. When actors audition, at least they get to make their case in person, with their own bodies and voices. Though writers see and hear their characters just as clearly, scripts for stage traditionally list only the characters’ names, genders, and ages, along with the briefest of descriptions of their personalities. All the rest depends on the imaginations of competition judges and literary managers to flesh out the dialogue and scenes.

Give South Stream Productions artistic director Brook North full marks for chutzpah, then, with This Doesn’t End Well, his omnibus of seven (and a half ) ten-minute plays at Sonorous Road Theatre. When your show’s publicity and playbill clearly state that “theater companies have rejected all these plays,” your production is then obliged to finish that sentence with the words, “and this is why they were wrong.”

North gets first-class help in making that argument from blue-chip actors Julie Oliver and company cofounder John Honeycutt; notable up-and-comers Katie Barrett, Lou Campbell, and David Thomas; and solid midcareerists Natalie Turgeon and Ben Apple.

The good news? At least seven shows made their case. (I missed the “half” North

added to the mix, a brief, cold-open bit appropriately named Meta, because a Wade Avenue collision delayed me and other patrons on opening night.) Barrett and Thomas brought wit and a couple of lovely chills to their high-school-student characters in the evening’s most deft piece of stage work, Information, and a sextet made Lunch Break a dark, crisp, just-longenough burlesque of office life (and death).

Though the tells tip us off early in two works, Inside Job is a compelling crime procedural, with graceful work from Oliver and Campbell. Honeycutt, Thomas, and Oliver array the gritty racetrack tale Railbirds with poignancy and gravitas.

Trekkies get a send-up in a sci-fi spoof, Clover, and the anthropology-meets-commerce farce, Misplaced, is strictly played for laughs.

Though momentarily kludgy staging, not fully integrated performances, and a metaphysical conceit repeated once too often reduced the impact of the semi-sentimental closer, The Stream, I was still glad enough that I saw it and its cohort to conclude that the evening’s title fails the truth-in-advertising test. Repeatedly, this engaging septet ends very well indeed. arts@indyweek.com

Disasters make us look for anything that salvages the experience: a lesson, a meaning, a context through which we can try to comprehend (and limit) absolute devastation.

As the garrulous avant-garde actor and Mabou Mines cofounder Frederick Neumann developed dementia in the last months of his life, his son and caretaker, dancer/ choreographer David Neumann, was tempted to consider it his final performance. When the condition worsened during and after Hurricane Sandy’s brutal assault on New York City in October 2012, a disoriented, larger-than-life character raging at the tempest suggested nothing less than King Lear. Over subsequent years, David gradually overlaid the absurdities and pain of losing both parents in the same year onto reports of other catastrophes, from the hubris-laden real-time reports of Weather Channel meteorologists during natural disasters to the chronicles of Noh theater, which gives this work of dance, theater, and song much of its frame. —Byron Woods

For some, the term “world music” acts as a slack catch-all that lumps together any non-Western music, regardless of its origin. But for institutions like Mississippi Records, it’s more of a mandate to scour the globe for every kind of music it has to offer. Based in Portland, Oregon, Mississippi Records has been an esteemed purveyor of obscure and oddball albums since 2003. The label’s discography has included LPs of African guitar music, American folk oddities, Thai psychedelia, Filipino buskers, and plenty more. Now, the label is hitting the road with records in tow—for sale and for dancing to, courtesy of Golden Wilson from Portland’s Olvido Records—short films of performers from all over the globe, and a presentation from label founder Eric Isaacson about the history of music, going all the way back to the oldest star in the universe. The label’s stop in Chapel Hill a great opportunity to nerd out with some of the best in this very specific business. —Allison Hussey

WHAT ELSE SHOULD I DO?

MONDAY, JANUARY 21 Actors Ian Bowater and Paul Deblinger were thrown together as a pair of deranged vaudevillians in Little Green Pig’s striking production of The Changeling last May. In what they’re billing as a “one-man show,” the two return to the boards with their own material for an improvised evening of comedy, comment, and autobiography. While running lines last spring, the pair realized that both were writers who had done improv overseas, Bowater as a part of a long-running comic double act in London, Deblinger during his years in Prague. Both revered the is-nothing-sacred comic sensibilities of the late, great National Lampoon. “Our view of the absurdities in our culture and our lives linked up pretty well too,” Deblinger says. Their first public evening of improvisational work is based on current events and developments in their own lives, some comic, some serious.

“We’ll be breaking the fourth wall—and some of the furniture,” Bowater cautions. “But not always for the laughs,” Deblinger adds. —Byron Woods

RESONANCY: JON MUELLER

During the last two decades, the drummer Jon Mueller has harnessed a reputation for high volume. You can hear it in his triumphant marches and ecstatic cymbal splashes as the backbone of intricate post-rock explorers Pelé, Collections of Colonies of Bees, or Volcano Choir. You hear it in his solo work for drums, electronics, and voice: Metals, from 2007, reimagined the athletic art of heavy metal drumming as a bleak landscape ravaged by seismic sonics; on the hypnotic Tongues, he spun multi-tracked hums and yelps over relentless pulses. But on the transfixing Canto, due in April, Mueller turns down, moaning through a sustained ripple of gongs and chimes or tapping a bass drum as droning tones slowly accrete around it. Mueller has responded to a world of mounting distraction and noise by diminishing his signal, forcing you to lean toward it.

Both abound in the trio’s music: Abstract melodies are marked by meandering melodic basslines and eerie, amorphous vocal effects, and they serve as launching points for progressive excursions into odd-metered improvisations.

Richmond’s Night Idea and Durham’s Blanko Basnet, the latter a solo vehicle for Hammer No More the Fingers guitarist Joe Hall, provide complementary ideas.

On “Song About A Girl” they sing “I think about lying down with you/I’ve got nothing better to do,” while “Timothy” is a sing-songy kiss-off to a former friend that sounds more like a love song than a burn. melody to the group’s folksy jams. Around the time Jones moved from Columbus, Ohio, to Philadelphia, she began recording lonely and sweet missives reminiscent of Grouper, all under the name Yowler. On last year’s Black Dog in My Path, Jones’s guitar strumming is tentative and messy, her voice open and rich, with just the occasional soft drum beat or spot of woodwinds for company.

Picked by Billy Joel himself to star in Movin’ Out, Michael Cavanaugh earned Grammy and Tony nominations—and surely enough money for a Cadillac—after a three-year run on Broadway as the piano man. This weekend, he’s joined by the North Carolina Symphony to perform a program of Joel’s greatest hits. Mandolin virtuoso Chris Thile has worn many hats over the years—a child prodigy, an adult star, a MacArthur “genius”—but in more recent years, he’s dedicated a bulk of his time to Live from Here.

The program is the successor to Garrison Keillor’s A Prairie Home Companion: Thile took over from Keillor in 2016, but the program underwent a heavy rebranding following Keillor’s fall from grace in the wake of shocking sexual harassment allegations in late 2017. The new format is more millennial friendly, and Thile’s guests in Durham include Death Cab for Cutie, returning to the Triangle after an extended spell away, and the ebullient New Orleans party band Tank and the Bangas.

This five-act fracas pushes an insane amount of air: Raleigh’s Mega Colossus and Madison’s Lords of the Trident spice up new wave of British heavy metal tropes with swords-andsorcery silliness; Wilmington’s Thunderlip shreds snarling punk that has a little metal heft; Washington, D.C.’s A Sound of Thunder throws down classic power metal riffs; Chapel Hill’s Swineherd’s brutal deathcore is aggressive and abrasive. —Patrick Wall THE MAYWOOD:

Mo’ynoq

[$10/8:30 P.M.] “The Collector,” the advance cut from Raleigh atmospheric black metal outfit Mo’ynoq’s Dreaming in a Dead Language, is full of hell, but it doesn’t release its aggression all at once. Recorded in Greensboro by metal master Kris Hilbert, the song builds around a jagged, dissonant guitar theme, pounding and pummeling in half time before piling on thrilling accents in odd meters. When it explodes into black metal ballast, it’s only briefly; soon enough, there’s a left turn into a thick, Mastodonic groove. “The Collector” stitches a lot of dynamic elements together, but the seams never show.

To celebrate the release of Dreaming in a Dead Language, Mo’ynoq plays the record front to back. Suppressive Fire and Arghast open. —Patrick Wall

The pride of Garner, Scotty McCreery makes an almost homecoming stop on his tour supporting Seasons Change, his 2018 album that’s reminiscent of nineties country while showcasing more mature songwriting. It’s straightforward, endearing, and heartfelt—his best work yet. After spending the past decade writing hits for Nashville’s biggest names, last year’s solo debut from Heather Morgan proved she’s plenty worthy of attention in her own regard. Burgeoning radio star Jimmie Allen also joins.

Starting in 2010, Oakland’s The Soft Moon released several albums of mostly instrumental no-wave and post-punk steeped in the thumpingly intense sounds of Bauhaus, Joy Division, and The Cure. Now living in Italy after a stint in Berlin, frontman Luis Vasquez continues to explore bleak soundscapes and expunge pain through his recordings. With 2018’s Criminal, things have steered things decidedly into the genre of industrial. Vasquez’s voice, a conspiratorial and spooky hiss, maintains strong order over punishing drum machines and sleek samples. With HIDE. —Josephine McRobbie MOTORCO:

The JonDoe is a Durham based quintet, contributing to the area’s unique hip-hop fusion jazz scene in a similar vein to local favorite Zoocrü. Vocalist Myk’l Hanna brings a silky tone to the ensemble’s presence, with the subtlety of jazz but the spirit of gospel—cemented together by the effortless piano playing of Chuckey Robinson. Also playing are The Afronauts, incubated by Pierce Freelon’s Blackspace, and drum ensemble Africa Unplugged.

WILLIAM PAUL THOMAS: DISRUPTING HOMOGENY In this interminable political moment, when violent bureaucracies are processing people on the basis of their identities, artists are turning to portraiture as a means of resistance. A picture makes a person visible even if policy denies their humanity. And if you can see them, you have to deal with them as an individual with a life like yours, not a representation of an identity category you’ve marginalized as some dangerous other. For some portrait artists, formal concerns drop away from the existential fact of their subject matter. The work is more about the person pictured than how the artist presents them. But William Paul Thomas’s portraits of black men are different. Faces are rendered with wonderful realism, but they float against a single-color field, disconnected from body and place. The space within the painting is not a real space; it’s a political space, which is abstract. Thomas explains identity politics as real people trapped within an abstraction. You see the stakes, for his subjects, of simply existing. Thomas is a recent resident artist at the Durham Art Guild’s Golden Belt Artist Studios and Power Plant Gallery, and a current resident at Duke’s Rubenstein Arts Center. After this opening reception at 21c Museum Hotel’s Vault Gallery (with craft cocktails inspired by the work), Disrupting Homogeny runs through the summer. —Chris Vitiello

WHERE WE FIND OURSELVES Hugh Mangum, born in a newly incorporated Durham in 1877, was a traveling portrait photographer in North Carolina and Virginia whose open-studio policy resulted in an unusually diverse array of subjects during the Jim Crow era. After Mangum’s death in 1922, his glassplate negatives were forgotten in a tobacco barn on his family farm for half a century, only to be rediscovered when the barn was about to be torn down. Now Mangum’s portraits, worn by time in aesthetically surprising ways, are the subject of the new book Where We Find Ourselves: The Photographs of Hugh Mangum, 1897-1922.

Coauthored by Center for Documentary Studies faculty members Margaret Sartor and Alex Harris, the UNC Press publication (forthcoming in early February) is coordinated with an exhibit opening at The Nasher on January 19, preceded by this January 18 kickoff event featuring a talk and book signing by the coauthors.

BAMBOO WIND: AN IMMERSIVE MULTI-ARTS PERFORMANCE “Being in a bamboo grove has a very different spiritual feel from being in a hardwood forest.

It’s so very vibrant and green.” For Southern poet and sculptor Coke Ariail, the groves of his childhood sparked a 2004 poem in seven cantos about the sexual longings and desires of two people who keep appearing in a mythical bamboo grove in each other’s dreams. But Ariail’s first visit to The Fruit got him thinking about radically expanding the work through collaborations with artists in other genres. He gave the poem to photographers Catherine Carter, Lynne Feiss Necrason, and Wojtek Wojdynski. After Ariail began work on a labyrinth made of hanging bamboo sculpture, he turned to choreographer ShaLeigh Comerford to devise an evening-length performance integrating spoken word from actors Dorothy Brown and Mike Foley. A diverse group of dancers brought diverse views on love and sexuality to the mix. “We identified and devastated the archetypes associated with love by placing them in a frame that reveals their humanity,” Comerford says. The immersive, experiential multimedia installation and performance runs this weekend only. —Byron Woods

In the process, he is persuaded by Ava, a young entrepreneur, to set his sights on a VR startup, a venture that takes him through the ambitious, twisting worlds of both rap and startup culture.

Featuring recognizable spots like Trinity Market, Bulldega, and The Durham Hotel, and a cast starring local music fixtures such as Willie Raysor, Andie Morgenlander, and Well$, the ten-episode web series seems primed to make good its promise to offer “one visual perspective in a conversation about the area’s future.” The release party will be hosted by Phonte Coleman (Little Brother, The Foreign Exchange) and celebrated with performances by Well$ and Zensofly, among others, plus a VR experience presented by Runaway and Lucid Dream VR. —Sarah Edwards

There is really only one rule to Sudoku: Fill in the game board so that the numbers 1 through 9 occur exactly once in each row, column, and 3x3 box.

The numbers can appear in any order and diagonals are not considered.

Your initial game board will consist of several numbers that are already placed. Those numbers cannot be changed. Your goal is to fill in the empty squares following the simple rule above.

Money to buy land for a new library building was donated by physician and businessman Dr. Stanford L. Warren. * On January 22, 1816, in his letter to a NC Congressman, Thomas Jefferson recommended the Italian Antonio Canova as a sculptor to create a statue of George Washington for the NC State Capitol. The Carrara marble sculpture arrived in Raleigh in 1821.
