a federal judge in California ruled that the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department had violated thousands of inmates’ constitutional rights by holding them on ICE detainers. (Andrews didn’t respond to an email from the INDY asking why all ICE detainers are honored and if he would keep that practice if re-elected.)

Birkhead says that, if elected, he would have a more open dialogue with the agency’s critics and would allow members of the public to tour the jail “in a controlled manner.”

Building trust with Durham’s Hispanic and immigrant communities would be part of a larger effort to increase transparency and public engagement that would also include the establishment of “an office that is a liaison to all people,” particularly communities of color.

“I think the main difference I will bring is having conversations with those who want to protest,” he says.

Birkhead served as Duke’s police chief from 1998–2005, when he became chief of police in Hillsborough. He left that post in 2010 to run for Orange County sheriff but was unsuccessful. (A few months later, it was made public that the Hillsborough department was being investigated for improper recordkeeping at the direction of an accreditation manager during Birkhead’s tenure.)

He was associate vice president of safety and security at Queens University until 2012 and has worked as a security consultant since. In the 2014 primary, Birkhead won about 39 percent of the vote, to Andrews’s 56 percent.

If he becomes sheriff, Birkhead says he will only honor detainer requests that come with a judicial warrant or an outstanding warrant for arrest.

“If the federal government wants to criticize us for not honoring detainers, I’m OK with that, because I think the community at large will be appreciative of that approach and appreciate us being good stewards of local resources,” Birkhead says. “There’s nothing in the federal law that says I must participate.”

The change would bring Durham County’s policies more in line with Orange County, which, since Sheriff Charles Blackwood took office in 2014, has not honored detainer requests “unless continued custody is supported by probable cause to believe that a criminal violation of federal immigration law has occurred”—for example, by a judicial or outstanding warrant.

“Enforcement of federal laws should be accomplished by federal actors and not by local law enforcement,” Blackwood says. “I am committed to being responsive to the needs of all members of our community regardless of a person’s immigration status.”

Blackwood is also up for reelection this year and faces a Democratic challenger in Tony White, a former investigator with the Orange County Sheriff’s Office whose platform emphasizes reforms within the agency.

Blackwood began his law enforcement career with the OCSO in 1980 and retired as major of operations in 2012 to run for sheriff.

In a statement, he identified emergency services infrastructure, opioid use, racial disparities in the criminal justice system, and school safety as challenges he’d like to address.

White worked for the Orange County schools’ transportation department for nine years before joining the OCSO in 1997, serving in the resource officer and patrol divisions before joining criminal investigations.

He retired in 2016 for personal reasons, on which he declined to elaborate.

White told the INDY that he would cut spending, engage more with local youth, work to prevent drug overdoses, and “have more of a diverse department” if elected. “I would ensure that everyone—regardless of who they are, where they live, what color, what race or religion—that they get treated the same,” he says.

On immigration enforcement, White says he isn’t fully familiar with the OCSO’s current polices, but he is “totally against the ICE program.” He says he would have to look into his obligation to honor detainers with administrative warrants, but he would only honor requests accompanied by valid warrants with which the Sheriff’s Office is obligated to comply.

The primary is May 8. There are no challengers from outside the Democratic Party in either the Orange County or Durham County sheriff’s race. swillets@indyweek.com

An Accidental Contender

WHEN ALLISON DAHLE CHALLENGED DUANE HALL, SHE DIDN’T EXPECT TO WIN. THEN EVERYTHING CHANGED. BY JEFFREY C. BILLMAN

“W

e’re getting into a sticky wicket,” says Allison Dahle, a Democratic candidate for the General Assembly. “I do not want to run on my opponent’s failings that have been publicized. As a woman, I’m troubled that this is still going on and I think we need to be very careful in how we communicate with people and listen to what they’re saying.”

She pauses. “How’s that for side-stepping?”

Dahle signed up to run against state Representative Duane Hall before she knew she might have a chance. Hall was, until a few weeks ago, a rising party star. Everyone assumed he was running for lieutenant governor in 2020, and who knows what after that. He had money in the bank, loads of name recognition, a pragmatic record, and a winning smile. In his Democraticleaning District 11, he was all but invincible.

So when Dahle filed to run in the May 8 primary, she didn’t expect to win. After President Trump’s election, she began working to organize Democrats in some Wake County precincts, but she’s hardly a player on the party’s stage. Still, she says, she wanted to get her perspective out there—that of a woman, a lesbian, in a political system dominated by white male lawyers—and perhaps set herself up for another campaign down the road.

And then everything changed. On February 28, the last day of filing, the progressive website NC Policy Watch published a story detailing accusations of sexual misconduct against Hall. Hall emphatically denied the allegations, but Governor Cooper, state party chairman Wayne Goodwin, House Minority Leader Darren Jackson, and other top Democrats called for him to step down.

Hall remained defiant, accusing Policy Watch of having a vendetta against him and going so far as to allege that Policy Watch had violated its nonprofit status by interfering in an election.

Since then, Hall’s path hasn’t gotten any less rocky. The Young Democrats of North Carolina turned on him, pressuring his campaign donors to donate to NC Women United and maintaining a public list of the politicians who have—and have not—called for his resignation.

And last week, the third person in District 11 primary, Heather Metour, dropped out, citing family issues. That leaves Dahle as Hall’s sole c h a l l e n g e r.

Allison Dahle He’ll have to win with an outright majority, despite the opprobrium he faces. And that means Dahle has a chance—if she can rally progressives outraged at Hall’s alleged behavior.

“It’s generational,” says a Democratic operative who asked not to be named. “The younger operatives, they’re not having it.

And they’re the ones [Hall] was friends with. … It may not be a slam dunk for Duane.”

In an interview Tuesday, Hall told the INDY he’s kept quiet in recent weeks because he’s in a no-win situation. “My immediate response [to the allegations] was to try to talk about everything,” Hall says. “But any response I gave upset people more.”

He insists that the Policy Watch reports misrepresented what actually happened.

In one example, in which he was accused of forcibly kissing an unnamed Democratic Party official at a party function, Hall says he and the woman—who he says declined to talk to the media—have been friends for twenty years; she went to kiss him on the cheek, like a sister. He thought it would be funny to turn his head and catch her on the lips.

“It wasn’t,” he admits.

But he says he meant no harm.

“The media took that incident and portrayed it in a very different light,” Hall says.

He points out that he and the woman are still friends, and that she recently went to lunch with him and his fiancé.

(There was a separate reported incident in which Hall was accused of forcibly kissing a woman at an Equality NC gala. That woman, who remains unnamed, did talk to Policy Watch and confirmed the story.)

Asked about the party officials who have demanded his resignation, Hall says, “I was upset that friends would do that that quickly. I feel like they acted with the best intentions but without the facts, without having heard my side.”

As much as this race will turn on whether the voters of District 11 believe the allegations against Hall—and as much as Hall’s alleged foibles have given Dahle an opening—the challenger says she doesn’t want the allegations to define her campaign.

Dahle is a Raleigh native, born at Rex Hospital. She earned a bachelor’s degree in theater and speech at the University of South Carolina, then worked as a stage manager before transitioning to a career helping people with disabilities find jobs.

She moved back to Raleigh about thirteen years ago, to be closer to her mother, and worked as an office manager for a law firm.

That’s not quite the stuff that political careers are built on, but Dahle thinks her background could prove advantageous in the legislature. She wants better funding for schools and health care and for the state to finally expand Medicaid—all boilerplate Democratic positions. She also argues that, operating in the minority, she’ll be able to effectively work across the aisle.

“I think compromise is not a dirty word,” Dahle says. “I think being a novice in the political system will help me. I don’t have any bad blood out there.” jbillman@indyweek.com INDYweek.com | 3.21.18 | 7

I

n the fall of 2017, Danny, a twenty-nineyear-old from Durham, stopped by the office of Carolina Behavioral Health Urgent Care in the middle of an acute mental health crisis.

Danny, whose real name the INDY is not sharing for medical privacy reasons, was homeless and suffering from a major depressive disorder with psychotic features. When Danny arrived at Behavioral Health Urgent Care, or BHUC, he was paranoid—so much so that he was not able to ride the bus or stay in a local shelter; instead, he was living in the woods. For Danny to manage his condition, he needed to be looped into mental health services as soon as possible—medication, therapy, and outpatient care.

Danny’s success with long-term treatment had not been great. Over the years, he’d bounced around various mental health agencies, but, likely due in part to a combination of his homelessness and his mental health 8 | 3.21.18 | INDYweek.com

This time, though, was different. Danny felt his symptoms worsening and getting in the way of his ability to function. He believed he needed to be back on his meds, but he didn’t have insurance.

When Danny walked through the doors of BHUC, he had no idea that the program supporting him was new, set up to help people just like him. It’s the only service of its kind in North Carolina, in fact, located in an unassuming building off Durham-Chapel Hill Boulevard.

The yearlong pilot program, which launched in July, was created to fill a gap in the local mental health care system. It’s best thought of as the psychiatric version of an urgent care clinic—a destination for patients who may need their medications refilled or want to be seen by a clinician for anxiety or depression, but don’t necessarily need to go

to the hospital or a higher-level crisis facility.

In the past, a patient like Danny may have ended up in a hospital’s emergency department—a destination that is becoming increasingly common for patients in need of mental health care in North Carolina. Compared with other states, North Carolina sees nearly twice the rate of patients with psychiatric needs who opt for the emergency room each year, according to The Charlotte Observer. The system is costly for hospitals, which have to absorb much of the cost for people who are uninsured or covered by Medicaid, and ineffective for patients, who can end up waiting for hours before being seen—or days before being admitted to a state-run psychiatric hospital.

Those problems will likely be exacerbated as mental health funding declines in North Carolina.

This year’s budget made cuts to publicly funded mental health organizations,

also known as local management entities or managed care organizations, or LMEMCOs, which cover the costs for mental health services for people on Medicaid or without insurance. In North Carolina, there are seven LME-MCOs. Alliance Behavioral Healthcare, which serves Cumberland, Durham, Johnston, and Wake counties, was hit with a $19 million cut for fiscal year 2019.

(Alliance received about $495 million last year, most of which came from Medicaid.)

The total funding for the seven LME-MCOs was reduced by $90 million.

“Unfortunately, North Carolina has been cutting mental health care services through the money of the LME-MCO system consistently these past few years,” says Nicholle Karim, the interim executive director for the National Alliance on Mental Illness-North Carolina. “One in five people are affected by mental illness in a given year. That’s about twenty percent of North Carolinians who

are dealing with a mental health diagnosis. When mental health care is not funded adequately or there’s not an array of services available to folks, then we see people lose their jobs or people end up in the emergency room because they don’t have access to the care that they need. Or people may end up in jail, or prison, experience homelessness, or die by suicide.”

With services already strained, BHUC is trying to ease the burden on local emergency rooms. Although the ER is often the first— and only—stop for patients seeking psychiatric care, it’s not always the best choice, BHUC clinic director Marissa Holsten explains.

“A lot of times it’s just not appropriate,” she says. “Everyone goes for a lot of different reasons. They estimated the wait to be about six hours. Anecdotally, it’s never that quick. A lot of times, people can spend the whole night in the emergency department waiting. And then in the morning, someone is like, ‘Hey, you might be better served by Behavioral Health Urgent Care.’ We’re hoping that we would fill this gap in the crisis continuum.”

The process for a patient like Danny, walking through BHUC’s doors for the first time, is relatively quick. Clinicians see clients ages four and up who live in Alliance’s coverage area and who either have Medicaid or are uninsured and are eligible for state mental health funds because they meet or fall below an income threshold ($71,550 for a family of four). Services for eligible patients are free.

BHUC provides safety assessments, crisis counseling, medication, and connections to further mental health care. Patients come in for a range of reasons, Holsten says.

“We see people who are like, ‘I’m in crisis, I might feel suicidal, and I need support— crisis counseling and appropriate referrals because I am going to need more than what you can provide here,’” she says. “And we also see people who are like, ‘I’m about to run out of my medication and I can’t see my psychiatrist for a week. I’m not in crisis yet, but if I stop taking my medication there’s a high likelihood I can go into crisis.’”

When Danny stopped by BHUC, he fell into the category of patients who needed help with medication. He did not have Medicaid, but the program was able to connect him with state funding for services while he waited to get his Medicaid activated. Now he has a therapist, a caseworker, and a community support team that will bring him to BHUC for his medication appointments—an injection once a month. His community support team, meanwhile, sees him about once or twice a week. (During a particularly cold snap, BHUC got the paramedics to deliver him a sleeping bag and a toiletry kit).

It’s possible those services have helped prevent Danny, who had previously been in

and out of jail, from cycling back into the criminal justice pipeline. Since his first visit with BHUC in the fall, he has become a regular client, and he’s currently waiting on Medicaid approval. Occasionally, he’ll just pop in to BHUC say hello.

One of the reasons this model may be successful for patients like Danny is because it brings providers directly to them, an approach common in urgent care centers.

“The way the model is set up, the urgent care model where an individual comes into a clinic, stays in the room, and then the providers come to that individual, that’s pretty unique in the behavioral health community,” says Margaret Brunson, Alliance’s director of hospital relations.

On a Thursday afternoon at BHUC, a receptionist calmly answers patients’ questions while a handful of people wait to be seen. Holsten files past patients in the waiting room and gives a brief tour of the space.

There are eight clinic rooms in total, including a play area for patients’ kids, decked out with books and toys. The rooms are painted white, decorated with potted plants and colorful paintings of trees.

The goal is to make the patients comfortable, Holsten says. “We want to bring our services to them.”

The program came about after Alliance reached out to a group of therapists and social workers at the mental health organization Carolina Outreach and asked if they’d be interested in teaming up on a pilot project.

Carolina Outreach concurred. The program is funded by Alliance, which covers the costs of uninsured patients who aren’t on Medicaid.

Patients are often referred from their primary care providers, hospitals, mental health courts, and schools. BHUC is also working with crisis intervention officers at the Durham Police Department to help set up a guide for officers about when it would be appropriate to send patients to the clinic instead of an emergency department or crisis facility.

So far, gathering clients has been a bit of a slow burn. The question for service providers and other state-funded care organizations that cover counties outside of Alliance’s purview is whether the program is working well enough to continue or be replicated elsewhere. It’s as yet unclear if BHUC has achieved its goal of reducing emergency department admissions. Alliance is still in the process of figuring that out, Brunson says.

“We know anecdotally that people are choosing this facility over the emergency department at times,” she says, “but we don’t have any clear data at this point, not yet, to see how much we’re diverting people from the ED and if we’re impacting ED admissions. And I think that’s something that will probably come over time as well.”

Holsten says the program’s numbers aren’t where she wants them to be—the clinic typically sees about six to nine clients a day, though it has the staffing to serve twelve. (On slow days, when the weather is bad, it can see as few as two or three clients.)

Even without the clinic operating at full capacity, Brunson says keeping BHUC’s doors open after the pilot program expires at the end of June is a priority. Alliance plans on supporting the program for the 2019 fiscal year, although it does not know exactly how much money it will be able to set aside for patients without insurance. After the year is up, it will reevaluate its support for the program on an annual basis.

program’s services. About half said they would or may have gone to an emergency room if they hadn’t gone to BHUC. Ninetyfive percent said their needs were met after their visit—a success rate Holsten chalks up to the strength of “the clinicians and how they engage the client.”

Clients hail from beyond Durham, too. As the word slowly trickles out, BHUC is seeing patients from across the four counties Alliance serves—some even driving more than an hour for a visit. But the long haul is worth it, especially for clients who need BHUC’s help with medications. Sometimes, a patient may run out of medication before his or her next appointment with a

Commissioners plan to set aside $750,000 in this year’s budget to create their own version of BHUC. “We have seen what our neighbor is doing and observed how effective it has been, and we want to try to improve our outcomes in Wake County,” says Commissioner Matt Calabria. “This is a tremendously exciting program because there is a huge unmet need in the community, and this is an opportunity to be very proactive about it.”

He continues: “A lot of this stems from the state not doing its job. We are constantly battling a state that underfunds behavioral health care.”

So far, BHUC’s clients seem satisfied with the care they’ve gotten. Since launching in July, BHUC has served about seven hundred patients; 98 percent of them, according to a survey the clinic conducted, said they were extremely satisfied with the

doctor, and BHUC will provide “medication bridges”—enough to get the patient through a potential crisis before the next appointment with a provider, which, in a strained mental health system, happens more often than you might expect.

“We have people who go in and are seen by a psychiatrist somewhere else, get started on a med, go to fill it, and can’t afford it,” says Holsten. “But for some reason, and I think it’s the volume, they cannot get back in to get that addressed or changed in a timely manner. So they come to us and say, ‘I am trying to get this medication filled, but I can’t afford it,’ so we can offer different options. A lot of times, thankfully, there are different types of medication that have a similar effect that could be cheaper, and sometimes it’s just linking them to the right pharmacy and helping them do some of that legwork or calling around.” ehellerstein@indyweek.com

THE IMPOSSIBLE BURGER IS A VEGGIE BURGER THAT ALMOST BLEEDS

ow do you want that cooked?”

This is a normal question to hear when you’re ordering a cheeseburger. But I haven’t eaten a real cheeseburger in four years. What I’d ordered was a veggie burger, and those are usually just a matter of heating until warm. It’s not like you have to worry about E. coli if your black bean patty comes out too pink.

“Huh?” I asked.

“How do you want that cooked?” the lady

at the counter reiterated. I was at the allday cafe on the ground floor of the Unscripted Hotel in Durham, ordering the newest vegan addition to the menu: the Impossible Burger, supposedly the closest thing to animal flesh you can find without having to kill a cow.

“Uh, medium-rare, I guess.”

The standard order at the allday comes with vegan cheese and mayo, which I subbed out for Gruyere and real mayo, as well as avocado, spinach, and tomato ($10).

Down the street at Bull City Burger and Brewing (which had sold out on my visit on a recent Sunday) or in Raleigh at Fiction Kitchen and Remedy Diner, you can find the Impossible Burger prepared similarly, though with some accompaniments swapped out. At Remedy, you get veganaise and mustard, no avocado; at Fiction, it’s Gizmo stout braised onions, malt-vinegar slaw, pickles, Green Man IPA mustard, and housemade vegan cheddar.

But wherever you get it, the main draw is a vegan patty that tastes and looks and feels decidedly non-vegan. The burger bleeds juices when you bite; the “meat” looks indistinguishable from the real thing.

“It’s not geared toward actual vegan customers,” says Hans Luther, the general manager at Unscripted. It’s too close to meat for many vegans’ comfort. Its real value lies in giving carnivores a plant-based alternative and getting them to “think about the impact of the meat we eat,” he says.

Bringing the Impossible Burger to Unscripted was his idea. Luther primarily eats a plant-based diet, and before taking over Unscripted he lived in New York City, where he watched the Impossible Burger go from a handful of restaurants to hundreds of restaurants within a year—“an explosion,” as he describes it. He wanted to be the first in the Triangle to get it, but he had to settle for being one of the first.

The Impossible Burger, according to Impossible Foods, its manufacturer, is the result of five years of research into what makes meat taste like meat and figuring out a way to replicate it with plants. The patty uses standard veggie-burger ingredients such as wheat, potatoes, and coconut oil, Impossible Foods’ website says, but the secret is heme, an iron-containing compound that is “uniquely abundant in meat” and makes meat “smell, sizzle, bleed, and taste gloriously meaty.” Heme is also found in plants, which means makes it possible to create a food that has all the characteristics of meat but has no animal products and generates considerably less wear and tear on the environment—according to its maker, at least.

Does it, though? For the most part, yeah.

The burger is delicious—quite a bit like I remember actual hamburgers tasting, and quite a bit closer to that goal than even the best veggie burgers around. food@indyweek.com

THE BULL CITY VEGAN CHALLENGE RETURNS The fifth iteration of the Bull City Vegan Challenge kicks off next month, with chefs at ten meat-centric restaurants in and around downtown Durham competing to see who can create the most popular plant-based specialty dish, as judged by diners’ votes.

This year’s participants are Dos Perros, Parizade, Pompieri, M Kokko, Juju, Guglhupf, Counting House, Jack Tar Diner, Unscripted, and Grub.

At M Kokko, known for its Korean fried chicken, you can order Biang Biang noodles with soy-braised shiitake and ground tofu. Pompieri, a pizza restaurant, will offer a pie with a base of eggplant, house-made vegan mayo, and house-made vegan mascarpone, topped with arugula, vegan mascarpone, roasted shaved fennel, and mushroom oil. Dos Perros will feature chile relleno, a roasted poblano pepper with brussels sprouts and sweet potatoes, with esquites tradicionales— fresh corn off the cob, lime, vegan mayo, and poblano and chile peppers.

The idea, says Leeanne Siart, who organizes the challenge, is not only to showcase Durham eateries and proselytize a plant-based lifestyle, but also to show “how popular and in demand vegan options are” and encourage restaurants to keep vegan items on their menus year-round.

The competition has three categories: Best Overall Entrée, Best Appetizer, and Best Use of Theme, which this year is sustainability—things like sourcing local, organic seasonal produce and not using plastic straws.

The chef who wins Best Entrée will receive a two-night staycation at the Unscripted Hotel. Other local companies donating prizes include Green to Go, Global Breath Studio, Seven Stars Cycles, Bulls of Durham, Crossfit Durham, Bull City Records, and The Pinhook.

DUKE PERFORMANCES’ INAUGURAL BLACK ATLANTIC FESTIVAL PUTS CARIBBEAN, AFRICAN, AND SOUTH AMERICAN CULTURES IN CONVERSATION

I

n the seventeenth century, a ship of enslaved people from modern-day Nigeria were shipwrecked on the Caribbean island of St. Vincent. Knowing they were fated to work at plantations or mines if they were discovered, they hid among the Arawak, indigenes of the region.

The communities began to intertwine; legend has it that the Arawak taught the West Africans how to fish and the West Africans taught the Arawak how to dance.

Over the next four hundred years, through multiple encounters with colonial powers— some peaceful, some violent—this new group of people moved across the coast of Central America, always evading the threat of slavery. Through these migrations, they developed a language melding Arawakan, Spanish, French, English, and broader Caribbean influences. Now this language and culture, called Garifuna, can be found in Honduras, Belize, Guatemala, and Nicaragua.

The history of the Garifuna people is just one of the stories of the intercontinental transactions of people and cultures across the Atlantic Ocean. Duke Performances celebrates that history with a festival that begins Monday. Over the course of the weeklong festival, six artists representing Mali, Venezuela, Honduras, Haiti, and the Dominican Republic will perform in Durham.

“We know that there is a cultural passage that exists that opened up very tragically,” says Duke Performances executive director Aaron Greenwald, referring to the transatlantic slave trade that trafficked an estimated fifteen million enslaved Africans to Europe and the Americas. “But then we know that there’s a constant generation of musical exchange across these communities and it doesn’t move in one direction, it’s dynamic. There’s a back-and-forth.”

Over the years, Duke Performances has incurred a track record of hosting international performers from Africa, the Caribbean, and South America, but the festival is an occasion to bring these different performers and their musical communities into a common conversation. Greenwald consulted Laurent Dubois, a scholar of the Atlantic world, and Jonathan Henderson, a musician and PhD student in ethnomusicology, among other enthusiasts and experts to create a festival he plans to make an annual event.

(In fact, while I was visiting his office, he received an email confirmation from an artist for next year’s festival and pumped his fist.)

“One theme that I think music of the Black Atlantic has is that its performance serves as much a social function as it does a concert function,” Greenwald says. “The music is woven into the fabric of people’s daily lives. There is some intentionality about participation.”

The festival begins with performances by Joan Soriano, from the Dominican Republic, and Emeline Michel, from Haiti. Both artists are from the divided island of La Hispaniola, but despite growing up about three hundred miles apart—roughly the same distance between Durham and Baltimore—their sounds could not be more different.

Soriano is a bachata singer from the countryside, known for his steel-string guitar work. Michel has been called the “Queen of Hatian Song,” working across genres in her popular multi-decade career. Soriano sings in Spanish, Michel in Creole and, occasionally, French and English.

“Diego El Cigala really speaks to these routes of travel that music has taken,” Henderson notes.

The Black Atlantic festival is not defined by a unidirectional flow of influence, but by a continuous exchange.

“I don’t think it’s all running through Africa, then going to Latin America and the Caribbean,” Greenwald says. “It’s all going back and forth, wrapping around.”

Duke Performances has also partnered with the Forum for Scholars and Publics to host a series of conversations on the Black Atlantic during the festival. They commence with a keynote conversation between Ned

On Wednesday night comes Venezuelan group Betsada Machado Y La Parranda El Clavo, Malian group Trio da Kali on Thursday, and Honduran Garifuna artist Aurelio on Friday. Each of these artists comes out of a long tradition of refuge and resistance within their countries.

Machado and her band grew up in a jungled region in Venezuela where escaped Africans settled hundreds of years ago.

As Afro-Venezuelans who come from a community of landworkers and a history of slave rebellions, their songs often have a political bent.

In Mali, religious extremists have seized parts of the country and outlawed music, but groups like Trio da Kali continue to play.

Its members, all children of canonical West African musicians, are practically musical royalty in Mali. They represent the current generation of the griots—a traveling group of musical storytellers who performed oral histories carried down across generations.

Today, Trio da Kali continues to sing those histories as well as make new ones, such as their Bambara version of Mahalia Jackson’s “God Shall Wipe All Tears Away.”

Aurelio Martinez, the Honduran musician better known as simply Aurelio, will play Garifuna music on Friday evening. The week concludes with global icon Diego El Cigala, a Spanish artist who made his name in flamenco, then expanded into tango and salsa. In 2014, he fled Spain to become a citizen of Dominican Republic. His latest album was recorded in Spain, Puerto Rico, Colombia, Cuba, New York City, and Miami, taking up the salsa canon across continents.

Sublette and Michael Veal, moderated by Dubois. Dubois and Sublette will also moderate a conversation between Soriano and Michel on La Hispaniola at Motorco Tuesday evening. The festivities throughout the week include bachata lessons, a demonstration by Batsayada at Cocoa Cinnamon, and a parrande (a traveling street performance similar to caroling).

Given its many pieces and dynamics, the connections that form the foundation of Black Atlantic are difficult to define in any rigid way.

Though this group of artists has a broad shared heritage as part of the African diaspora, their musical output spans several styles.

“While I think it may be impossible to find a single common thread that connects all these bands, I also deeply believe that there is some shared ineffable spark that lays at the heart of it all,” Henderson says. “These musical cultures all share a story of resilience and profound genius in the face of unimaginably difficult circumstances. But perhaps they are connected not just by a shared history but also by their future-looking visions for freedom and musical invention.”

The Black Atlantic festival doesn’t seem to be trying to answer this question; instead, it seems to be trying to ask it in inventive ways.

“We don’t have any Cuban artists, we don’t have any Brazilian artists, we don’t have any southern African artists, we don’t have any American artists performing this year,” Greenwald says. “But this can be drawn in numerous different ways, and we hope that different kinds of resonances and answers will come out of this festival each year.” music@indyweek.com INDYweek.com | 3.21.18 | 19

ndie-rock chameleons Of Montreal have cycled through plenty of styles over the years. On their latest album, the sprawling White Is Relic/Irrealis Mood, the Athens, Georgia, band takes cues from extended eighties dance remixes on tracks like the Prince-goes-goth “Paranoiac Intervals/Body Dysmorphia” and the dreamy new-wave sugar fog “Writing the Circles/ Orgone Tropics.”

White Is Relic/Irrealis Mood comes with an introspective essay by Of Montreal majordomo Kevin Barnes about the album’s backdrop. There’s a lot to chew on: he forgave himself for his divorce, fell in love again, and came to some seismic realizations about race, culture, the media, and oppression.

Barnes writes that he’s turned to a variety of great minds and strong voices—including Angela Davis, Noam Chomsky, and Ta-Nehisi Coates—for inspiration. But despite the essay’s hints of turmoil and change, Barnes says Of Montreal is in a healthy place, thanks to a solid lineup and a cooperative mentality.

“It’s almost like an art collective now,” he says of the band, adding, “There’s so much love coming from the stage and the audience as well. It hopefully is a very communal experience, and not just a voyeuristic one.”

We caught up with Barnes last week, while he was out walking his dog. The wideranging conversation covered music and Of Montreal’s two-plus-decades on the road and Barnes’ approach to pushing the band toward the future.

INDY: Of Montreal has always been very synth-oriented. What drew you to eighties extended dance mixes for this record?

KEVIN BARNES: I think rediscovering that concept of editing songs for clubs and for dance halls. It’s cool because it’s less focused on the lyrics and the vocals and more focused on a groove. Reading about the songs that Arthur Russell used to make for the dance club that he used to d.j. at, I guess it 20 | 3.21.18 | INDYweek.com

Sometimes you get so in the weeds on something, you lose all perspective. It helps to get that outside opinion.

Definitely. And working with [multiinstrumentalist] Zac Colwell, he’s just an insanely good musician. I basically just said, “Here’s all the songs, I want you to do something, anything. Something small, something big. Whatever you want to do.” He added a lot of things I think are the most exciting moments of the record.

Of Montreal PHOTO COURTESY OF GIRLIE ACTION helped me focus in on how beautiful music is, and how fun and exciting music can be instrumentally, and then trying to incorporate that into the pop structure.

I like working with longer arrangements because it gives me more opportunities to expand the vision and keep it unpredictable and interesting for the listener, and also for the composer.

You worked on your own or remotely with other musicians for White Is Relic/Irrealis Mood. How did that change the sound and execution of the album?

I used to sit in my parents’ house in high school. I had a cassette four-track, and I would basically go straight home from school and just work. It’s kind of the same approach I’ve had forever. But working alone definitely has its upside and downside.

The upside is that I don’t have to compromise at all, as far as letting other people contribute to something if I don’t really like what they want to do. That can be a problem with bands if people aren’t all totally on the same wavelength. No one’s really happy because everybody has to compromise their vision on some level.

On another level, it’s definitely more work, which I don’t really mind, because I think of it as going into my laboratory, losing touch with time and space. It’s almost like a meditative process. But I still like working with other people because they’re able to contribute things I wouldn’t have thought of. I like the idea of the situation [where] I do as much as I can by myself, and then when I start to hit a wall, [other people] can contribute something that is really special and totally different from what I would do.

Of Montreal’s first tour for White Is Relic/Irrealis Mood kicks off this week.

In light of the fact you have so many issues and topics on your mind, is there anything in particular you want to convey with these songs and concerts?

We never really want to be heavy-handed about anything. I never felt like that was my role. We definitely try to create an atmosphere of inclusion and love and positivity and support. What we try to do with our live show is create an atmosphere that’s fun and exciting and gives people an opportunity to role-play and experiment with gender-bending and dressing up and wearing costumes.

It’s sort of like a holiday. I think of it as something in between Halloween and New Year’s Eve. At this point, how do you choose which songs to play? Of Montreal’s catalog is so huge.

We try to mix it up every tour. What we’ve been doing for a couple tours is to create almost like a Broadway musical or something. We’ll do basically the same set every night, but it’s all very choreographed and sketched out with the theatrics and props, the costume changes. HollowayBurrell’s Black Ops Theatre Company has been creating spaces for African-American performers in the Triangle since 2015, and the Bull City Black Theatre Festival shows she won’t be letting up any time soon. But the Bull City Black Theatre Festival shows that Durham is more than ready for the opportunity for the biggest stage.

In addition to more amazing art to digest this weekend, there will also be a variety of chances to get involved and learn. Black Ops aims to educate and inform our community through workshops for playwrights, actors, and improvisers. This weekend also features one discussion with PlayMakers’ Kathryn Hunter-Williams and another with Monét Noelle Marshall on her recent, impactful show Buy My Soul and Call It Art. There’s lots on offer for anyone who wants to write the next James Baldwin play (not that anyone will ever equal James Baldwin).

The Bull City Black Theatre Festival is meeting the increasing need for theater artists of color in Durham to work in nontraditional formats. As Church Da Poet proclaimed during his talkback, “We don’t do theater like other people. We do theater our way.”

I left feeling invigorated about what is to come for the Durham arts community and for the festival itself. F

or every question I ask Ginger Wagg, she poses five more.

“What’s the point of me? What am I doing? Is it serious? Is it not serious? Is what I’m trying to accomplish really frivolous?” she asks by way of explaining her new performance installation, Frivolous Artist, which premieres at the Fruit in the Durham Independent Dance Artists season this weekend and next.

These rhetorical questions erode the conventional relationship between journalist and subject, roles that, in Wagg’s sun-filled Carrboro home, come to seem first insignificant, then nonexistent. We are two people exploring a cloudy constellation of questions about the place of artists in society, 22 | 3.21.18 | INDYweek.com

“You have agency. You can make choices.

Do you want the responsibility?” the value of art, and the hard-to-define power of improvisation.

This is apt. Wagg’s creative practice, which centers on dance but also involves music, performance art, and more, is built upon deconstructing dichotomies between participant and observer, audience and artist, serious and silly. She invites us to perform alongside her, to respond to her movements and to one another’s, and to become attuned to the reasons why we find certain motions funny, troubling, or beautiful.

There is comfort in knowing the “rules” of a dance performance. (She is the dancer; I am the seated audience member.) There is comfort in having clear criteria by which to judge it. (That is a difficult arabesque, so it must be praiseworthy.) But Wagg prefers discomfort. While some of her improvisations might carry a trace of the conventional elegance of ballet, which she studied in high school and college, her performances disrupt assumptions about quality and meaning.

“I do go into realms that are hard to understand—wriggling, writhing, rolling in odd ways,” she says. “I’ve been thinking about why those gestures are more or less available than a ballet gesture. What makes that wriggling or writhing have any value?”

Traditional artists are often after clarity, even obviousness. They want a certain emotion to be accessible. Wagg is less direct, more searching. She performs unfamiliar or grotesque moves to make us think critically about our impressions and assumptions and recognize our interpretive responsibility.

“I’m definitely asking the question, what would you like to bring to the table?” she says. “How are you standing? What direction is your head looking? Could I stand like you? Are you fiddling with your phone?

What if I made that same gesture and now we’re doing the same thing?”

Wagg’s past performances have involved sound art (wailing horns, hiccupping electronics), props (mirrors, scrap metal), and collaborative dance. She’s hesitant to describe the form and content of Frivolous Artist in too much detail lest she limit our interpretive possibilities.

“It’s a site-specific, mobile audienceand-performer interaction,” she concedes.

“We’re going to move in multiple spots in and around the Fruit. We’ll all be moving together, and there will be different things to see and experience and hear.”

The title Frivolous Artist speaks to Wagg’s good-humored and self-critical view of an artist’s role—especially that of an experimental artist. But it also speaks to how central the audience is in her work.

“I’ve been asking, how is the audience relevant?” she says. “And for this work, I’ve been like, well, that’s the only thing that’s relevant. So how am I relevant?”

Making viewers aware of their agency and complicity is not merely a deconstructive gesture. It’s an empowering one with implications for sociopolitical life.

“I think a lot of us feel unempowered to make choices right now and feel like other people are just ruling, in a way that doesn’t give us agency, doesn’t give us the ability to make changes,” Wagg says. “I think this really simple idea is almost a radical idea.

Two Steps Forward

PLAYS ABOUT LGBTQ HISTORY ARE PLENTIFUL IN THE TRIANGLE. WE NEED THEM ALL. BUT ISN’T IT TIME TO ALSO LOOK AHEAD?

W

e know we can get things good, fast, or cheap, but seldom all three at once. Likewise, when it comes to plays with queer themes in the Triangle, it seems we can get them new, relevant, or well-attended.

If you want something writ large on season brochures, you need a few decades of distance. I’m talking about your classic “gays in crisis” plays, such as Bent (set in the 1930s), Perfect Arrangement (the 1950s), and The Normal Heart (the 1980s), all recently seen in the Triangle. And Justice Theater Project will bring I Am My Own Wife, a major play about a transgender woman, to the main stage next season.

Like Bent, which JTP also staged, Wife takes us back to Nazi Germany. But if you want to talk about trans persecution and Nazis roaming the streets, you can just look to 2018.

We see fewer queer plays that deal with modern young people’s day-to-day struggles. As an exception, Colman Domingo’s Dot, staged at PlayMakers last Christmas, is about a family that includes gay characters. This factors into the story as it would in many families. But it’s not a play “about gay themes.” No gay character is dying or commits suicide. We don’t see them prancing about the countryside of a weekend, reveling in their gayness, something to which today’s queer kids cannot relate. If a bunch of drama geeks can take over the national narrative on gun control and intimidate Congress, they certainly deserve to see themselves on the stage.

This year, Burning Coal Theatre Company immaculately produced Larry Kramer’s classic AIDS drama, The Normal Heart, whose protagonist would be in his eighties now. It’s not that it’s irrelevant. Trump has no Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS, no strategy. He seeks no input from experts and pushes legislation that will result in death.

Burning Coal artistic director Jerome Davis says he wishes that a play about the Reagan administration killing off its queer citizens wasn’t still so topical; he’d prefer AIDS crisis plays to “come to be thought of as quaint period pieces.”

Actor Brent Blakesley, who recently played gay Berliner Rudy in JTP’s Bent, worries about the endless revivals of Angels in America and Rent.

“There’s a risk that the audience doesn’t realize that these do not reflect the current HIV experience,” Blakesley says.

The quality of the plays and productions, not just the content, matters. We need works relevant to all in the queer community, not just white gay men in crisis.

Mashuq Mushtaq Deen’s Draw the Circle at PlayMakers was the rarest of gems, a brand new and strikingly resonant play about a transgender person of color. But this premiere was given “second stage” status, playing only a week in PlayMakers’ smaller Kenan Theatre.

Still, there are glimmers of hope in the Triangle. In addition to cautionary crisis plays, we’ve recently seen several “gay today” works: The Cake, Mothers and Sons, Dot, and Space Girl all have queer authors and/ or believable queer themes. They’re new, relevant, wellattended. Quantity and quality.

There has been one notable absence. Given the international attention surrounding the HB 2 debacle, the local stage’s silence on it has been conspicuous.

“I'm shocked we didn’t have a major [new play] centered on trans issues,” says local producer Glenn Greggs, who reads new-play submissions regularly.

So whose job is it to get us on track? Artistic directors must lead the way, but a top-down approach does not always work.

Season selection is usually akin to the selection of a pope.

Unless you’re on the inside, you just have to wait to see the smoke. If companies are concerned about representation, letting the public into the process couldn’t hurt—especially if taxpayer dollars are in play. I can’t imagine a lesbian theatergoer being too excited about seeing Lillian Hellman’s hyper-tragic The Children’s Hour again. Sometimes lesbians just go to the grocery store and argue about salsa. Not every conversation need end in suicide.

For its inaugural production, coming up in April at Raleigh’s VAE, Star Pocket Theatre chose A Member of the Wedding, which illustrates the pressures of gender conformity on young people.

North Raleigh Arts and Creative Theatre and Manbites Dog Theater have proven that gay leadership can result in more gay stories on stage. When I pointed out to Timothy Locklear, artistic director at NRACT, that six of his 2017– 18 shows featured queer characters, he was surprised. Not everything he chose was deliberately a “gay play.”

“It is important for [theater] to mirror society,” he explains. Queer characters are just part of that landscape.

By contrast, he’s going all-in next season with a littleknown satire Gay Card: The Musical.

Manbites Dog has long led the charge on producing queer theater, even festivals. Theatre in the Park and Raleigh Ensemble Players did their fair share of the early heavylifting. The News & Observer theater critic Roy C. Dicks posits that theaters like TIP and REP flourished because Manbites proved that “the subject matter seemed to be not only accepted but well-attended.” You aren’t going to lose money because a play is queer—at least not in our area.

So it’s not that queer content cannot be found. You just have to dig for it sometimes. Or, better yet, create it yourself. Burning Coal has commissioned a new play by a lesbian author for next season. But not every company can go that route, nor does it have to. It’s all out there; it’s just not always reaching the stage.

Katy Koop’s lesbian-driven The Amazing Cunt and L’il Bitch Take Raleigh needed a New York City workshop and a Minneapolis queer-festival appearance before anyone in the Triangle would touch it.

“If the Women’s Theatre Festival had not happened,” Koop says, “I doubt the play would have been produced in North Carolina at all.”

None of this is to say that productions of gay history plays are inherently lacking value. Many have meaningful messages, tell stories of other marginalized groups, and can be very entertaining, bringing in much-needed funds for smaller theater companies. We do need stories of the past. But we get bogged down in gay heritage. We need stories of past, present, and future.

Mixed Feelings

DARK COMEDY AND WEIRD TRAGEDY COMPLEXLY BLEND IN JAPANESE FILM OH LUCY! BY GLENN MCDONALD

ost movies operate by generating primal feelings: fear, joy, anxiety, amusement. Elicit these in various proportions and your movie will fit into a broad genre, whether it’s horror, comedy, or drama. That’s the usual routine.

But some films look past primal feelings to focus on more complicated emotions.

They paint with different colors, you might say, mixing and swirling the hues to elicit complex, uncomfortable feelings.

Oh Lucy!, a Japanese-American production from first-time feature filmmaker Atsuko Hirayanagi, is the latter type. It’s funny and disturbing, comic and tragic, weird and wonderful. It generates feelings that we don’t even have names for.

The film follows Tokyo office worker Setsuko (Shinobu Terajima), a middle-aged woman in the grips of profound ennui. The workplace scenes are funny and familiar, like a Japanese version of The Office. But darkness lingers just beneath the surface. Hirayanagi holds scenes a beat longer than usual, suggesting the cruelty behind the laughter.

When we see Setsuko’s tiny Tokyo apartment, it looks like the utility closet of Japan’s saddest thrift shop.

Setsuko’s world is abruptly overturned when she meets expat John (Josh Hartnett),

an English-language instructor who employs an unusual pedagogical technique. John encourages his students to assume new personas, complete with ridiculous wigs, and speak with big American confidence.

Setsuko, who adopts the name Lucy, discovers that she rather likes the options afforded by her new identity. More funny bits ensue, including a running goof on that mystifying American ritual of the hello hug. When Lucy follows John to southern California, her world flips again.

On one level, Oh Lucy! is a dark comedy about identity, the roles we choose to play, and the radical escape fantasies we all entertain from time to time. On another, it’s about despair and the sort of bitter laughter that bubbles up when things aren’t funny at all.

I like that the movie takes the time to let a moment land, allowing the full complexity of an exchange to resonate. Terajima’s lead performance, nominated for an Independent Spirit Award, is utterly arresting.

And I don’t think I’ve seen anyone who looks cooler smoking a cigarette since Robert De Niro circa 1979. I don’t know why, but that seems relevant to a film that doesn’t feel like anything you’ll find at the multiplex. Find it at the Chelsea in Chapel Hill. arts@indyweek.com

Abigail Washburn is an equally enthusiastic scholar of the Southern United States and the farthest reaches of East Asia, and she uses music to examine the deep connections between the two seemingly disparate worlds. Her preferred instrument is the banjo, which she uses to pluck out fiery tunes from Appalachia like the Coon Creek Girls’ “Banjo Pickin’ Girl” and the Szechuan folk song “Taiyang Chulai.” One of her frequent collaborators is Wu Fei, a Beijing native who now lives in Nashville. Fei’s weapon of choice is the guzheng, a Chinese zither that has a history dating back nearly three thousand years. As a team, Washburn and Fei bridge and bend their respective areas of expertise into unique multicultural music. Expect plenty of pretty songs and a side of scholarship, but be prepared for a little weird wiggle room, too—the pair isn’t afraid to splash around in stranger territory. —Allison Hussey

Woods first convened this colloquium of dance, music, poetry, and scholarship in order to gather, celebrate, and share the work of women artists, particularly women of color, during Women’s History Month. The festival was “a way to say, ‘Hey sister wimmin artists, I see you out there working away, and I want the best for you as I do for myself,’” Woods wrote on her SOULOWORKS dance company website. This year’s assembly includes host and spoken word performer Kimberly Gaubault, choreographer Dorothy Clark, slam poet Ashlee Connors, the Winifred Garrett Quartet, singer-songwriter Jasmé Kelly, and the Kristen Taylor Collective.

There’s a small handful of musical instruments that suggest heavenly and celestial bodies in their timbres: harps, organs, French horns. But allow us to make a case for the pedal steel, which, in the right hands, can expel some of the most gorgeous, dreamy tones you could ever hope to hear.

One of the finest practitioners of this sort of music is Susan Alcorn, who builds spacious, reverberating landscapes that are equally splendid and peculiar. A student of Pauline Oliveros’ esteemed Deep Listening Institute, Alcorn’s expansive compositions tap into all kinds of heady emotional spaces: moments of delight, of sorrow, of quiet meditation, and the thoroughly varied gray areas in between.

In the nineties, Anna Quindlen won a Pulitzer Prize for Commentary for her column in The New York Times, so it’s no surprise that, in her many novels, she’s no fantasist, but rather taps into current events and the temper of the times. In her latest, Alternate Side, a parking-rage incident throws a tony, tight-knit Manhattan community into crisis and division, the two defining states of our American times. The narrative centers on a working mother who gets tangled up in her own good intentions. In its generally favorable review, USA Today missed Quindlen’s “trademark warmth in depicting family life,” which is secondary to sharp commentary about social privilege—but who’s feeling very warm these days? “Well-meaning people of the world who enlist others to clean their homes and nanny their children, prepare to be made uncomfortable by Quindlen’s astute observations about interactions between the haves and have-nots, and the realities of life among the long-married,” the review went on.

Last summer, dance theater shocker Betroffenheit—choreographer Crystal Pite and playwright Jonathon Young’s dark, carnivalesque ride through the underworld of loss—left audiences at the American Dance Festival buzzing. Its show-biz protagonist kept unbearable grief at bay with cirque moves, ruthless stage management, and a little Vegas-style razzle-dazzle. This week, we’ll see what Pite and Young have been up to since. Nederlands Dans Theater, the dazzling contemporary troupe that first brought Pite to our attention, presents The Statement at Carolina Performing Arts. It’s a psychodrama whose characters’ Machiavellian maneuvers around a corporate boardroom table prove that business is simply warfare pursued by other means. Twenty years since they first redefined American noise rock, Providence, Rhode Island institution Lightning Bolt remain the cult noise act that so many others still aspire to be. As a spare bass-and-drums two-piece, they would often play on the floor of venues, inspiring the sort of fear and reverence usually reserved for biblical characters. At The Pinhook, Horizontal Hold celebrates the release of its new LP, The Silence, where the band puts a new collective spin on the signature heft of some of its members’ other projects. The Recording Academy seriously snubbed Big K.R.I.T.’s 2017 release, 4eva Is A Mighty Long Time—a twenty-two-track double album that never lets up on its energy—by passing it over for any Grammy nominations. In an age of monthly mixtapes, EPs, and viral unmastered SoundCloud singles, K.R.I.T. released a thoughtful project that powerfully displayed his ability to cover vast amounts of ground. He brought the blues roots of Southern rap music to the forefront of his tone and writing, all the while balancing the new and old styles of his rhyming flow that earns him fans in varying hip-hop camps.

[$15–$17/8 P.M.] Drawing from the vast and fecund wellspring of the world’s variegated guitar musics — the Eastern modalities of Hindustani classical music, the deep spiritualism of Gnawa, the melancholy drone of Portuguese fado, the guitar calisthenics of American Primitivism—guitarist Steve Gunn pushes at the boundaries of six strings, weaving dizzying tapestries through jammy guitar freak-outs. His solo albums, like 2016’s Eyes on the Lines, are loose and rangy; his experimental instrumental work, like the Gunn-Truscinski Duo’s rumbling Bay Head, are exploratory, conjuring windswept vistas through crystalline melodic lines that explode into noisy orbits.

Sometimes a band’s name tells you most of what you need to know about what you’re getting into, which is more or less the case for Nashvilles Thelma and the Sleaze. The band slings scuzzy, sneering garage rock that’s ferocious and fearless, not unlike the women who inspired the band’s name. “Secretary,” one of the band’s newer numbers, is a surprisingly gentle song from the ensemble, but it still sizzles with an undercurrent of tension. Over the past several days, vast floral arrangements began appearing in trash cans across Raleigh, turning eyesores into exuberant works of art. They were part of the North Carolina Museum of Art’s pop-up campaign for the fourth-annual Art in Bloom, an exhibit that features the work of more than fifty floral artists from across the country. Each created a piece inspired by a work in the museum. This year’s featured florist, Arthur Williams of the acclaimed Babylon Floral in Denver, Colorado, works with the natural structure and dynamics of organic materials to create intricate, animated pieces. He’ll be showing Influenced by the East—Elements of Sogetsu Ikebana, a collection of work influenced by Japanese design, on March 23. More than a dozen related events, including a floral meditation session, a body botanicals master class, and a Bonsai for Beginners workshop, accompany the exhibit. —Nick Gallagher

Becoming a Woman in the Age of Enlightenment: French Art from The Horvitz Collection: We’re in more of an “emperor wears no clothes” age than one of enlightenment, but the feminine gender is being dissected more forcefully than ever. Visitors will surely take this into consideration when viewing exquisite works from the Horvitz Collection of eighteenth-century French art. Most are by well-known male artists such as Boucher and Fragonard. But several talented female artists are also represented, though they were relegated to the gentle medium of pastel instead of oils. Antoine Vestier’s “Allegory

of the Arts” (1788) is a marker of changing times, a lovely portrait of the artist’s daughter sitting at a desk and drawing a sculpture. She is an active subject, not a passive object, and scholars believe that she painted her own drawing on the canvas. Several works show the duplicitous demands placed on women: to be a saint, but also an embodiment of sexual desire; to be in a profession, but only a socially acceptable one; to be both strong and weak. Bob Trotman delights the eye and dazzles the mind with satirical figures from the world of big business, wrought with a master craftsperson’s panache. Some of the works include motorized mechanisms that are triggered by motion sensors, implicating the viewer in the vast, mysterious whir of late capitalism, but even the stationary sculptures are so charged with life that you might think you glimpse them moving in the corner of your eye. Solidary & Solitary: The Joyner/ Giuffrida Collection: The most famed names in postwar abstract art—Mondrian, de Kooning, Pollock, Rothko—had very different ways of pushing painting past representation.

They also had something in common: all were white. Of course, it isn’t that African Americans weren’t making vital contributions to the course of art history; it’s that the white male canon-makers didn’t as readily embrace them. This touring exhibit at the Nasher is a spectacular corrective, highlighting the Africandiaspora abstract artists who refined this new way of seeing. They range from midtwentieth-century Abstract Expressionist Norman Lewis to contemporary iconoclasts such as Theaster Gates and Mark Bradford, whose twentyfive-foot-tall sculpture anchors

Marc Bamuthi Joseph knows our pain. In /peh-LO-tah/ (the pronunciation of the Spanish word for “ball”), the nationally renowned Haitian-American writer, dancer, and performer probes his complicated lifelong love affair with soccer. ONGOING LAST  Ain’t CHANCE Misbehavin’: The Triangle’s African-American stage artists have a bench deep enough to fill multiple iterations of works by August Wilson and Lorraine Hansberry, but the scarcity of such roles still leaves many of them benched. Director Liz Grimes Droessler underlines this fact by double-casting this NRACT production. Though it’s a welcome gesture, uneven abilities and a troublesome sound mix on opening night limited the success of this tribute to Harlem Renaissance jazz pianist Fats Waller. The

women had the advantage—not entirely surprising, as veteran Tina Morris-Anderson was revisiting her role from Theatre Raleigh’s 2007 production.

Opening night jitters can make any singer pitchy, but the men, Spencer Jenkins and Juan Isler, rarely seemed as vocally comfortable. Production values were uneven as well, with an inexpensive-looking speakeasy set. But impressive ensemble numbers still sent an appreciative audience out humming. $17-$20. Thru Mar 25. LAST Boléro: As composer CHANCE Maurice Ravel himself admitted, Boléro, his most famous work, is musically minimal: seventeen nearly identical iterations of the same theme, with little variation or development, aside from the number of instruments gradually joining in the march toward an inexorable climax. Yet the suite has repeatedly fueled the imaginations of choreographers and Olympic ice skaters. What does Carolina Ballet guest choreographer Lynne TaylorCorbett hear in it? These clues come from the subsections in the playbill: “The Couple,” “The Sun,” “The Sea,” and “The Wind.” $32-$91. Thru Mar 25.

about online-gaming culture, Allan Maule wrote this threeperson comedy for his master’s thesis at UNC-Chapel Hill. But even after an upgrade that flips the genders of the two main characters, it still feels like an earlier, lessdeveloped work. A Chicago glassworker named Terry bursts into his neighbor Jacob’s apartment with a renewed lust for life. Why? Someone just took a shot at him and missed. Terry, who’s a bit of a noodge, takes a sudden interest in Jacob, his nearest fellow human. That could be a problem, as Jacob’s actually the professional killer hired to take him down.

Working in Terry’s favor are Jacob’s unlikely philosophical misgivings about his line of work. Under Ira David Wood IV’s direction, this serviceable production doesn’t rise far above the dark-sitcom trappings of the script. Fine comic actor Lorelei Lemon engages as the manic Terri, but the paper-thin tough-guy persona of Patrick Whalen was as unconvincing as the flimsy, convenient ending. $20-$25. Thru Mar 25.

RYAN H. WALSH Not long after “Brown Eyed Girl” became a hit, Van Morrison was living in New York with dubious immigration status and fretting about the mob, which had taken over his record deal. So Morrison and his then-wife fled to Boston to lay low. There, he began writing the material that would become Astral Weeks.

But Ryan H. Walsh’s new book, Astral Weeks: A Secret History of 1968, is about much more than the creation of a famous record. It also sweeps up the unique aspects of the counterculture movement that flourished in Boston, a historically uptight city that became ground zero for the LSD explosion in the U.S. and birthed an influential semi-cult led by Mel Lyman.

There aren’t any interviews with Morrison in the book, but Walsh colors in the gaps with American spiritualism, occultism, and all kinds of little-known music history. This week, Walsh reads from the book at Bull City Records, followed by a discussion with INDY music editor Allison Hussey. —Brian Howe

For all the films that rightly persecute the food industry for disregarding environmental and ethical issues in the name of profit, there are not many that consider the dangerous assumptions activists might ensnare themselves in if their ideology begins to overtake the scientific consensus. In the age of fake news, Food Evolution, a documentary by Academy-Awardnominated director Scott Hamilton Kennedy, parses the complicated and polarizing GMO debate with views from both sides of the aisle. The always insightful and uncompromisingly data-driven astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson serves as the film’s narrator. His now-famous quote on Real Time with Bill Maher, “The good thing about science is that it’s true whether or not you believe in it,” could serve as the film’s symbolic center. A panel discussion with Anastasia Bodnar, Fred Gould, and Michelle Schroeder-Moreno, all experts in the field of food science and bioengineering, will follow the screening. —Nick Gallagher

He lets it rip in this directorial debut about the high-stakes world of L.A.’s underground poker scene. Rated R. ½ The Post— Spielberg’s film about The Washington Post and the Pentagon Papers is a filmmaking master class and an ode to the free press.

Rated PG-13.  The Shape of Water— Guillermo del Toro’s fable of the love between a mute janitor and a strange undersea creature is like a children’s book for adults, beautiful but morally simplistic. Rated R. ½ Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri— Maybe the Coen brothers could have pulled it off, but Martin McDonagh has tonal problems with this vengefulmother tale. Rated R.  A Wrinkle in Time— Ava DuVernay’s adaptation of the classic novel is bold and messy, but with its diverse cast, it could be a touchstone for today’s twelve-year-olds.
