NBA ACADEMY NBA ACADEMY ABOUT
WHAT IS THE NBA ACADEMY? NBA Academy is a year-round elite basketball development initiative that provides top high school-age prospects from outside the U.S. with a holistic approach to player development and a predictable pathway to maximize their potential. The NBA Academy program includes six academies across Australia, China, India, Mexico and Senegal for top prospects from their respective countries and continents. The NBA identifies prospective athletes through a global network of scouts, relationships with local federations around the world, the mobile basketball training application HomeCourt, and the league’s other international basketball development programs: Jr. NBA, NBA Basketball School and Basketball Without Borders. Prospective NBA Academy athletes are evaluated based on skill level, character and long-term potential.
6
The program focuses on health and wellness, character development and life skills, and gives prospects the opportunity to learn the game from coaches who the NBA hires with professional, collegiate and international coaching experience. Depending on the location of the academy, participants can receive academic support, including attending a local public school, receiving a scholarship to a local private school, or using an NCAA-approved virtual learning program. As part of the program, the prospects compete against top competition throughout the year and have an opportunity to be selected for travel teams that play in international tournaments and exhibition games.

WHAT ARE THE NBA BASKETBALL SCHOOLS? NBA Basketball School is a network of tuition-based basketball development programs open to male and female players from outside the U.S. ages 6-18. NBA Basketball Schools have been launched in Brazil, China, Greece, India, Mexico, Uruguay and the UAE. PROGRAM PHILOSOPHY The NBA Basketball School philosophy is to share the game of basketball with young athletes across the world by teaching skills, values, and wellness in a positive and fun environment. The holistic approach is intended to strengthen the culture of youth basketball, teach life lessons, and empower young athletes to succeed both on and off the court. NBA Basketball School believes this philosophy leads to developing complete and well-rounded basketball players and individuals.
36
PROGRAM OVERVIEW The mission of NBA Basketball School is to inspire young athletes and to provide a unique development opportunity through exposure to established coaches with proven training techniques. The coaches will introduce and familiarize all student-athletes with NBA Basketball School elite training methodology and techniques. • With input from NBA coaches, former NBA players, and player development experts, NBA Basketball School developed a comprehensive basketball curriculum approved by the National Basketball Coaches Association that will be introduced in partnership with school coaches. • The program provides on-court training, strength and conditioning exercises, and basketball education for young athletes between the ages of 6-18 who are interested in playing basketball. • The program is executed by trained NBA Basketball School coaches approved by the NBA. • The program is led by teams of foreign and local coaches with NBA regional heads overseeing all training operations.
BASKETBALL CURRICULUM The NBA Basketball School curriculum has been developed to help players, parents, coaches, and organizations better understand the process of improvement. The curriculum is a developmentally-based progression that depends on players mastering new skills before advancing to the next level. It’s not based on a player’s age, but rather on his or her proficiency at key skills. In the first four levels of the curriculum, coaches will focus on teaching student-athletes the basic fundamentals of the game of basketball, and will use a skill progression checklist that helps players advance through developmental levels. As they progress through each level, players will be challenged by increasing the level of difficulty and intensity of the drills. This approach helps players to continually develop and enjoy the positive reinforcement of mastering new skills. After completing the first four levels, student-athletes advance to an elite level of player development. This second stage focuses on the advancement and mastery of basketball skills learned throughout the first four stages, while placing significantly more focus on team concepts and competition. Coaches will introduce more complex basketball techniques, concepts and tactics that are commonly used in elite high school, university, and professional basketball programs.
