Group GSA was engaged by the Georges River Council to provide a detailed construction design for Former Bowling Club Site. The aim was to implement the Plan of Management’s Landscape Master Plan by creating a welcoming community garden and engaging play space. The new play tower combines viewing platform making use of the existing topography to create a range of play experiences.

SITE CONTEXT - The former Oatley Bowling Club Site is located at 35 River Road, Oatley; adjacent to Myles Dunphy Reserve. The project site itself is an area of approx. 11,000m2. The site was previously the host of Oatley Recreational Bowling Club, and in October 2018, was closed to the public due to increasing concerns over the stability of the site and contamination.

PROJECT BOUNDARY

Transport for NSW is acting on behalf of City of Parramatta Council (the Proponent) for the Robin Thomas Reserve Civic and Cultural Precinct (the Proposal). The Proposal includes upgrades to Robin Thomas Reserve including a new amenities building, car park and landscaping. As part of the upgrades, heritage interpretation is proposed which recognises, celebrates and integrates the historical layers that have shaped Robin Thomas Reserve and Queens Wharf Reserve, including its indigenous, natural and river heritage.

The proposed location for the tramway garden is in the eastern extents of Queens Wharf Reserve, adjacent to George Street – where the steam powered tramway originally ran. The proposed location is within a garden bed situated between the QWR shared path and footpath recently installed as part of Parramatta Light Rail. This is an ideal location as there is an existing interpretation sign for the George Street tramway that is in need of repair, and tie in and enhances the existing City of Parramatta Council heritage trail.

The proposed walls integrate salvaged stone and bricks, and provide a base for the signage to be attached and etching of imagery. Parramatta NSW, Australia 2022
