ABOUT
The city of Porto is known for a certain type of characteristic building: the bourgeois house. These constructions, which date back to the period between the late XVII century and mid XIX century (Oliveira e Galhano, 1992), have largely been abandoned. This has, in turn, led to many properties succumbing to an ever increasing state of advanced degradation, which should dictate a need for immediate intervention so that these buildings can be requalified. Being mostly concentrated in urban centres, rehabilitating such undeniably valuable estate would undoubtedly contribute to the revitalizing of neglected sections with huge habitational potential. In this context, a proposal for such an intervention is hereby presented, to be installed in one of the aforementioned XIX century bourgeois houses. The proposal in question is intended to capitalize on the building’s history while improving its

infrastructure and altering its functional, living or usage conditions in such a fashion that it would not only improve its present worth as a cultural space but also facilitate an improved capacity for response to any future needs or wants that may arise, including event hosting. Tied in with the intervention on the building, a proposed line of devices and furniture designed to fit such varied necessities and functions is designed in each individual compartment of this cultural space. This project is looking to contribute to an incremental increase to the attractive cultural and artistic motifs that the city of Porto is increasingly known for. This has, directly or indirectly, resulted in an increased frequency and return of population towards the urban center.
CULTURAL SPACE - casa viva
The building is located on Pra;a Marquês do Pombal nº 167, in Porto - Portugal. The XIX century building belongs to a group of 10 houses, equal except on the depth, which varies according to the depth of the land on which they were built. Each of them served initially for the dwelling of a bourgeois family of the time, being thus traditionally co-known by “Bourgeois Houses” and nowadays is ocupied by a project named “Casa Viva”, witch welcome initiatives and events, in a community spirit.
intervention The approach in this intervention was to maintain the exterior image of the building as it belongs to a set of houses, and intervene only in the interiors of the house. Inside the house the intervention went through a transformation and resizing of the interior spaces aswell the addition of new sanitary facilities per floor, located next to the stairs, in order to free space for the compartments. In an attempt to change the atmosphere of the house caused by deterioration of the infrastructure and the lack of lighting of the spaces, a demolition of the intermediate walls was made, resulting in a division into two spaces separated by the

stairwell, which are now naturally illuminated by windows on the facades. Based on the spaces established in the program and the intervention on the interiors of the building, was posible to make the distribution and location of each of these inside the house. As in the XIX century bourgeois houses, where the level of privacy increased as one went up, there was also the intention here of hierarchizing and distributing the use in function of this same concept of reserve and privacy, locating the more public spaces in the more accessible floors, reducing the frequency of access as it progresses to the spaces located on the upper floors.

Within the general concept of the building was also developed a concept that varies by floor that can share the same material, color, shape or constructive system. The adjacent body of the building ( where the Kitchen and Bar are located) only shares the general concept. It was intended to use wood as the main element for the construction of the devices, since this is the basis of the buildings in the bourgeois houses.

A general concept was designed for the building, which is a unique object that will populate each of the spaces and that aims to satisfy all the needs of the uses and functions of the different zones. Each of these devices was created to locate in the space defined, since it takes advantage of the characteristics, dimensions, angles and accesses.

GROUND FLOOR
The ground floor is where the more public areas were distributed (common area, exhibition, kitchen and courtyard). As such, it was intended as a concept to design a line of organic furniture, with a light, fun, comfortable and flexible appearance, with foam as the material, other than wood. This material has the advantage of being easily sculpted and therefore be more flexible in creating organic shapes.
In the common area was created a continuous device, which runs along the perimeter of the walls with it’s elements, and which frees a passageway to the rest of the house. These elements are divided into several pieces of sofa, benches, tables, and a service desk for the reception. They have openings along the pieces to use as storage (such as board games, letters, newspapers, magazines and documents). The exhibition area starts in the hallway and extends into the room, where a simple expository system, through gutters, is used to cover the perimeter. It was designed a device, in this organic line, which is a sofa, centrally located in the room, allowing the user to move around or to sit and enoy the art. It’s shape creates a space inside and outside the piece itself, allowing a greater number of seats.
This kitchen intends to receive communal meals, reason why it was thought an open and wide space, locating the counter and the fixed infrastructures in a corner, releasing the rest of the space for the movement and the big meals. The tables and benches designed have to allow large meals and for that reason, was thought of two tables, with two benches each, in plywood, that can be joined on these occasions, making them into one. In the courtyard, another continuous device was developed, a sofa, that creates several areas so that different people can enjoy the space (and the sofa), while creating a separation between them. Each of them have their own table and space.

FIRST FLOOR
The first floor is intended to be, in it’s entirety, a store space. On one side we have Loja Viva shop, a community shop that allows users to leave, exchange and take items of clothing and footware, and on the other side of this floor is another shop to sell smaller designer pieces, like decorative objects. The devices here share the same line, material (plywood and glass), constructive system and central location in the compartment. The location of the element causes it to influence the movements and the user’s path in the space. It also creates passage spaces and wider spaces.
The device designed for Loja Viva shop, intended to use the characteristics of the space for it’s design, such as the fact that it’s on a floor with a high height, a narrow width, a big depth and not straight walls. From these came a U-shaped device, with irregular dimensions and angles, facing the entrance of the space. It’s composed of three elements, each pierced with openings of various sizes, in which some of these elements can cross the entire width of the element, while others are only accessible from one side of it. These openings serve as shop displays. The form creates an interior space within the shop, used as a fitting room. The constructive system of these elements is based on structure and boxes in plywood, that will define the openings in the piece, being sheathed in mirror. This material creates an illusion that the space extends beyond the walls, while making a set of reflected lights, giving it greater light. In the other shop, the piece was drawn in the form of an open hexagon, making it possible to be inside the device itself. It’s composed of 5 faces of irregular sizes that present diverse openings. As this element is for selling pieces of designers, it’s openings are smaller. Since, as it’s a sales space, a table with folding top and leg was created in one of the openings. In the bar, within the concept of a single object, and in order to free a lateral passageway and access to the interior and exterior of the house, the device that was drawn is continuous and composed of 4 tables and 8 benches. All are interconnected by the platform and the back of one bench of the other, constituting a single device, leaning against the side wall.

second FLOOR
The concept on the second floor is not perceptible, as it happens in the others. Here the devices were inspired by the design of scenic elements. A scenic element creates and organizes the space where dramatic actions are to take place. Scenography is a very important part of a show, because it develops environments and contributes to illustrate imaginary space. On this floor it’s located the show hall and an amphitheater, where the red color is the constant factor, referring, in the case of the hall, to the large theater and cinema rooms, with their large curtains in Red velvet.
In the shows hall was designed, in addition to a stage, which gives continuity to the pavement, a set of red curtains, that can change the room’s atmosphere, feel and visual appearance, depending on the show it receives (concert, play or a dance show). There are a large number of solutions in the position of the curtains, which will cause different sensations to different people at different times. The curtains can all be closed, hiding the walls, the windows and the door, or all open, allowing the viewer to enjoy the characteristics of the space. In the amphitheater, a space to receive different types of lectures, conversations or other events, was projected a bench. Given the dimensions, characteristics and light inputs of this compartment, this device was placed in the center of the space. The sculptural element was thus highlighted, facing the wall, freeing space all around. This allows the access to both the bench and the terrace. This element, besides having on the back hangers, allows the possibility of separating irregularly into two different benches, creating different dynamics in the space, positioning them face to face or side by side, for a particular purpose. The constructive system of this element is based on a structure of wooden red bars. This structure will be visible in the device, and will establish the connection with the show hall.

THIRD FLOOR The third floor of the house is for the work spaces, with an office and a library. The concept present on this floor, passes through the negative and positive of the devices. When one side is filled by the part of the device, the other is empty, and when the latter is full, the other is empty. A design of a chair was created to be located on the work spaces, using the same concept characterized by the presence of straight lines.
The office is a workplace for the employees of the cultural space. From the general concept of a unique object for each space, it was drawn a continuous work table, which runs along the perimeter of the room, with irregular shapes, taking advantage of the angularity of the space itself, releasing a volume in the center. This form allows access to several work zones along the table and even a table for meetings with an hexagonal shape. It is a closed element, whose access to the interior is made from one of the articulated tops. It also has the peculiarity of having two tops, spaced apart. The first is to support the storage of documents and other materials and the second is the tabletop where you can work effectively. The table legs are placed at each vertex of each top separation, forming different angles. They will cross the two tops until they are visible on the top, creating a more attractive design. In the library was created a device constitued of shelves, placed all around, and a table in the center of the compartment. The element of shelves make openings in the stereotomy, for the accesses, the entrance door and the windows. The shape of the table is the joining of three irregular hexagons, in plywood. The legs are placed in each vertex of the top and cross the top until they appear in it. The fact that the table has this shape causes each face of the hexagons to receive a user, delimiting an individual space.

ABOUT “Farmville” is a village for artists and businesses, located in Paredes - Portugal. Artists moving to “Farmville” will live in one of 10 Live-Work residences, for a period of 6 to 12 months. All of these creative residences have a “mini-ateliers” inside the building and are neighbors of an incubator of companies of design furniture.
Each of the Interior Design master’s students was in charge of one of the artistic residences, projecting, designing and developing a line of pieces of furniture for the interior of the building. The buildings have 3 floors: the ground floor is the work space, the first is the living area and the second, and last floor, is the bedroom area. The concept for this line of furniture started with the design of the chair, that influenced the rest of the line, either by the material, color or constructive system. On the ground floor, there is a wooden structure of shelves along two of the walls, that support a desk and a chair. Both chair and desk share the same constructive system. The shelves have a porch that allows the user to enter into the working space and also separates it from the entrance / hall area of the building. They are secured by rods of colored steel and the same color, red, appears also on the structural piece of the desk and work chair.
02 FARMVILLE RESIDENCES ACADEMIC WORK | 2014
Moving up to the first floor of this residence, you will find the living area. There is no separation between the living space and the kitchen, besides the kitchen counter itself. The dining table is located next to the stairwell, which is covered with a glass panel. The sofa is located in the corner with a triangular shape, in order to take the maximum advantage of the whole space. A sofa is a moment of relaxation, his shape and material, a red cushioned coat, suggest a cozy space, just like the idea of a niche. Coming to the last floor, the bedroom area, there is a very strong element that is the bed. This has a wooden headboard that fills almost the entire wall, where there is also a mirror. The bed takes place on a higher level, made up of drawers and shelves, that make a platform where the mattress is supported. There is also a small relaxation area, next to the mattress, a small bench, so that the user can contemplate the view from the balcony. There is a sanitary installation, located on the wall that separates it with the room. On that wall, is a set of steel rods that support 2 shelves and also a support for the clothes.

ABOUT This project aims to rehabilitate an old thread-reel factory, Efanor, transforming it into a Museological space, to show part of the collection of Paulo Parra, the permanent collection, and also to integrate temporary collections. The factory is located in Senhora da Hora, Porto - Portugal, and has two distinct buildings, two “ships”, of different dimensions. The concept for this project had the elements light and path present, that together helped to form the general interior space as well the exhibition one. Was opted to divide and separate the permanent collection from the temporary ones, in order to organize better the space in the interior. There was the intention of preserving the pre-existence of the buildings, it’s industrial appearance, updating it only through the technology of concrete and rehabiitating some parts of it, like the roofs and framing of the windows. With that purpose in mind, the existent factory machines, which are located on the ground floor, were left on the space, to help to create that vibe. Some new floors were added, as well as a whole new complex building on the

right, to host facilities such as the bar, sanitary installations and office space for the museum workers. The smaller “ship”, the one on the left, serves as the entrance to the museum, as a n historical exhibition of Efanor factory (in the subterranean floor), intended to be a space where the visitor knows about the industrial and development context of the zone, and as temporary exhibition space, on the new added upper floor. On the bigger “ship”, the one on the right, was designed a new and majestic object, to host the permanent exhibition with collectible items from Paulo Parra. This object, a set of concrete helical ramps, has a enormous impact on the space due to his size, and was thought not to touch the building itself, just simply being inserted into the interior of the building, in a way of not interfer with the pre-existence. The exposition route is made around the object, going up through the helical ramps, that create an inner box of the ramp, divided into layers, which serve as an auditorium space and as a continuation of the bigger items of the permanent collection.

ABOUT Rehabilitation of a XIX century building in Alcântara, Lisbon - Portugal, transforming it into an old Portuguese tavern. “Taberna Saudade” is inspired by the old Portuguese taverns of the end of the XX century and seeks to recreate this spirit, in the environment and in the decoration, with carefully designed furniture and details, including some illustrations and typical objects from that period. In that sense, this project seeked only the used

of “typical tavern ” and “Portuguese” materials, such as lioz stone (for balconies, pavements and wainscoting) and hydraulic mosaic (on pavements). The exterior of the building didn’t go through major changes, besides the new window frames and entrance door. This project was carried out during my internship at Genoma Urbano Architects in Lisbon, with the collaboration of the other team members.
ABOUT This project was made during the Master’s Degree in Interiors, where it was intended to choose a building with an eclectic Architectural style and to model and render it, using the program 3D Studio Max. The chosen building is Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II in Milan - Italy, from the XIX, with a Neo-Classical style.
