Movie Theater under construction

In response to my article under the title “Movie about Canada’s Big Band leader - Moxie Whitney” in our Jan. 28th edition of iNews Cayman, I received a very nice email from Paul Whitney who is making the movie called MOXIE. He told me some very interesting details about Moxie and his close Cayman connection. Moxie and his wife Jennifer left Toronto in 1973 and moved to Cayman with their son Paul. They lived here for about 5 years before music brought him back to Canada. Moxie and partners owned the old Royal Palms Hotel. In fact he brought in 25 Royal Palms from Miami and then renamed the hotel as it used to be called La Fontaine... after the

fountain that was in the middle of the parking lot. He had originally thought of buying the Pageant Beach Hotel until someone mentioned La Fontaine on a beach seven miles long. Then they renovated the pool, as the water seldom worked in the rooms. Every time the water went off Moxie would offer free rum punch to his guests in the pub downstairs. Paul thinks that’s where the term ‘stinking drunk’ came from! Moxie was an amateur projectionist and loved the movies. When he discovered there was no movie theatre here he brought down a 19mm projector, some old movies, draped a table cloth over a tree branch and showed the films. That was in Matilda’s Corner.

It was so popular, he and some local businessmen built the first indoor air conditioned theatre. He also built the condominiums, Island Pines, right next to the Royal Palms. Sadly the Moxie’s Royal Palms Hotel burnt down in 1991 after it was bought by new owners, the Kirkconnell family. Moxie also went into partnership with Sam, a local fisherman and a great sailor, but they only caught one fish together (the one in the picture). Moxie also worked at promoting Cayman talent in Canada that included the Barefoot Man (George Nowak). Don’t forget Paul is looking for investors in his movie about Moxie. Penn named ambassador

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) — Actor Sean Penn has been named ambassador at large for Haiti in recognition of his humanitarian work since the 2010 earthquake. The Hollywood star received the honor from Haitiian President Michel Martelly at a special ceremony Tuesday evening at the National Palace. Martelly thanked Penn for keeping the spotlight on the Caribbean nation. The president joked that the “only downside” to Penn’s new position is that he can no longer call the actor by his first name. Now Penn will be called “Ambassador.” Penn’s J/P Haitian Relief Organization was set up a few months after the Jan. 12, 2010, earthquake to oversee a settlement camp where thousands of people displaced by the disaster lived.

Continued from front page The 200-member audience heard that “affiliated” meant far more than citizens and passport holders: Anyone with a Green Card, with US property, a business, a bank account, with authority for a US account – whether power of attorney or merely a signature – or a dual citizen is liable. Anyone who spends a minimum amount of time in the US – whether for medical treatment, holiday, business or otherwise – or owns stocks, bonds or other financial instruments, anyone born of US parents, whether they or their parents are resident or not in the US is liable. Listeners heard that liability extends even to ‘accidental’ citizens, described by one adviser last night as someone whose mother may have suffered complications during pregnancy and gone to the US to give birth “and the child never spent another day in the US”. “We think we may be able to get a change in that,” he said, conceding, however, that, for now, it remained law.The FATCA efforts, widely acknowledged to result from trillion-dollar US budget deficits, were launched in March 2010, seeking to recover money in overseas bank accounts. to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

Already the Union Bank of Switzerland has suffered heavy financial penalties and given up its list of US account holders. Washington is similarly threatening banks worldwide with a 30% withholding tax on their US assets if they fail to report. In some cases, banks have refused US deposits because of potential liabilities. A financial services adviser to government, requesting anonymity, said Tuesday that Mr Bush hoped to meet US Senator Carl Levin, who has led both FATCA and “anti-tax haven” legislation. The Cayman Islands was the first foreign government to meet US tax authorities on FATCA, he said, and had raised the “accidental citizens” subject. “We acquitted ourselves very well,” he said, pointing out that Cayman already had extensive tax agreements with the US, and that new laws demanding greater disclosure could threaten Cayman Islands laws limiting release of information. “We are hoping we may be able to change it so [disclosures] are government-to-government, rather than local institutions-togovernment,” he said. US tax attorneys and accountants Shawn Wolf, former Cayman Islands resident Patrick Hackenberg and Martin Karges addressed Tuesday’s

audience, detailing what is expected under the new laws. “One bad apple has spoiled the bunch,” Mr Wolf said, echoing Mr Karges description of the requirement on all US-affiliated persons to file notice of their foreign bank accounts. If the aggregate value of those accounts reaches US$10,000, the US Treasury demands a report. “They are not just looking for tax evaders,” Mr Wolf said, “but are after the guys laundering money or the next Al-Qaeda general moving money around outside the US. “You may not be Al Capone, but they want to know you’re not Al Capone,” he said, alluding to the notorious 1920’s Chicago gangster, ultimately jailed for tax evasion. Advising the audience to consult tax experts, the three said some exemptions applied to overseas earnings, but were hemmed in by regulations regarding an individual’s circumstances, including intentions, timing, physical location and marital status. Depending on those details, penalties ranged from $10,000 per year per bank account to imprisonment to $100,000 fines. “As a general matter,” Mr Wolf said, “if you have never filed, you need to go back six years in your records, and there is some discussion now of eight years.”

Postal workshop gets stamp of approval

The Cayman Islands Postal Service hosted a sectorial awareness and strategy workshop for Permanent Secretaries (PS) and Postmasters General (PMG) within the Caribbean Postal Union (CPU) on 19-20 January. The Caribbean Postal Union spearheaded the two-day workshop, which had participating delegates from Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Aruba, Barbados, Bermuda, Cayman Islands, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines,

Trinidad and Tobago, and British Virgin Islands. The aim of the workshop was to raise awareness among postal authorities about the challenges confronting the Caribbean postal sector and for them to develop an action plan and set out the necessary steps to ensure the objectives were met. Additionally, the forum focused on quality of service, market knowledge and customer needs; postal reform and sustainable development, cooperation and interaction with

industry stakeholders. Universal Postal Union’s (UPU) Caribbean expert Gerard Power said, “At the UPU we are gratified to see the high degree of interest in these topics and the commitments made by countries in the region to furthering the work through a series of specific actions. These include the examination of the regional logistics network and establishing a working group to identify and address barriers to the exchange of electronic money orders and postal remittances.”

Jamaican jailed for 12 years for $454 robbery Paul Kennedy paul.kennedy@ieyenews.com

An illegal immigrant from Jamaica has been jailed for 12 years after an armed robbery at a gas station netted him just $454. That means Norval Barrett will spend a year behind bars for every $37 he stole during the raid at Shedden Road Esso. He was only caught after a quick thinking police office spotted Barrett at George Town Hospital and recognised him from CCTV footage taken at the petrol station. Jailing him for 12 years for armed robbery – plus six years to run concurrent for possession of a firearm – the Honourable Mr Justice Charles Quin said Barrett had terrified staff at the gas station. Judge Quinn told Barrett, who had used an imitation gun during the robbery: “Whether the weapon is an imitation firearm or a real firearm makes very little difference to the victim because the fear and terror caused by the production of such a weapon will be to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

the same.” The court heard how Barrett, who had entered the Cayman Islands illegally by boat, held-up the petrol station in August 2010. He threatened to shoot cashier Maxine Gardner if she didn’t hand over the money. Judge Quin said: “By sheer chance, a few days after the incident, the investigating officer, DC Ronald Francis, was making enquiries at George Town hospital in an unrelated matter, when he recognised the accused as the man he had seen on CCTV coverage of the robbery. “DC Francis then cautioned and arrested the defendant and took him into custody. The defendant said he did not have any passport and he had come to Cayman on on a boat.” Both the cashier and another member of staff at the gas station positively identified Barrett as the gunman. Judge Quin added: “There was no guilty plea, no evidence of remorse and no evidence of any cooperation with the police. Furthermore, neither

the money, nor the imitation firearm has ever been recovered.” The court heard that Barrett has completed an anger management programme while in HMPS Northward and made a pledge to make positive changes towards his life. Judge Quin said: “Employees working in small businesses and petrol stations are extremely vulnerable. The Court recognises that there has been a marked increase in violent robberies over the past two years. “Employees and the general public must be protected from violent robberies of this type and persons committing such crimes must understand that if they are apprehended and convicted they will receive lengthy terms of imprisonment.” Judge Quin also praised the detective who spotted Barrett at the hospital adding: “Had it not been for DC Francis’s prompt action, the defendant may never have been apprehended and brought to justice.”

Putin says he may face runoff in Russia’s election MOSCOW (AP) — Prime Minister Vladimir Putin says he could face a runoff in Russia’s presidential vote in March — his first acknowledgment that he may fail to muster enough support for an outright victory. Putin’s statement Wednesday signaled that he might be willing to accept a less dominating father-of-the nation image if he fails to win more than 50 percent in the first round on March 4, rather than risk igniting more public outrage through blatant vote rigging. Evidence of fraud in favor of Putin’s party in December’s parliamentary election triggered the largest

protests since the Soviet collapse two decades ago. Putin said at a meeting with election monitors that “there is nothing horrible” about a runoff and he’s ready for one, according to Russian news reports. But he also warned of the dangers of a second round, saying it would lead to a “certain destabilization of the political situation.” The need for stability in Russia has been the mantra of Putin’s campaign. Putin won his previous two presidential terms in 2000 and 2004 in the first round. After moving into the prime minister’s job due to term

limits, he has remained Russia’s top political figure, but has seen his support dwindle amid growing public frustration with his rigid controls over the political scene, rampant corruption and rising social inequality.

Los Angeles teacher charged with molesting 23 LOS ANGELES (AP) — Detectives say the elementary school teacher told the children it was a game. Once inside his third-grade classroom, he blindfolded them, gagged them and set cockroaches crawling on their faces. And then, Mark Berndt photographed them, creating hundreds of images that would eventually lead to his arrest. On Tuesday, Berndt, 61, was sitting in jail on charges that he committed lewd acts on 23 boys and girls, ages 6 to 10, between 2008 and 2010. None of them complained about Berndt’s behaviour, authorities said. Police and school officials only learned of it when a film processor

found Berndt’s photos more than a year ago. Since the discovery, the school district fired Berndt and police put him under surveillance. “If it wasn’t for the film processor, this could still be continuing today,” said Lt. Carlos Marquez of the Los Angeles County sheriff’s department. Berndt was arrested Monday at his home in Torrance and was being held on $2.3 million bail. Some parents picking up their pre-kindergarteners at the school on Tuesday complained that officials at Miramonte Elementary School in South Los Angeles should have notified them when the photos were found. The probe began after the film

processor, who is required by state law to report suspicions of child abuse and molestation, turned over some 40 photographs to authorities.

World Trade Center design flaw could cost NEW YORK (AP) — The agency building the new World Trade Center says a design flaw could add millions of dollars to the cost of the complex’s signature tower. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said Tuesday that the loading dock under One World Trade Center won’t be finished in time for tenants to move their equipment into the 104-story tower. So it’s building five temporary loading bays above ground. A temporary station that was built for the Port Authority Trans Hudson subway is blocking access to the underground loading area. The station to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

can’t be dismantled to make way for underground freight areas until crews finish the permanent station. “Several years ago there was a design miss,” Patrick Foye, executive director of the Port Authority, told reporters Tuesday. “Should it have been caught? The answer is, probably.” The temporary loading bays will add millions to the cost of One World Trade Center, the glass and steel spire previously known as the Freedom Tower. The building is now 90 stories high. “We and the other concerned stakeholders believe this will be a short-term issue and will not impede

completion of the site or tenants moving into the buildings,” Foye said. He spoke after giving a speech to the Association for a Better New York. The Wall Street Journal on Monday reported that the cost of One World Trade Center has soared to $3.8 billion, $700 million more than the last publicly released estimate in 2008.

OPINION

The Editor Speaks A taxing editorial

Colin Wilson

Big brother is certainly looking down on you, especially if you colin.wilson@ieyenews.com were born in the USA. As “The Economist” once wrote, “The national anthem calls America ‘the land of the free’. Great reformers from Abraham Lincoln to Martin Luther King have urged America to live up to its ideal of “freedom”. When a group of French Americanophiles wanted to flatter the United States, they sent the Statue of Liberty.” I wonder what these reformers would think now? In the same article it mentions how the American legal system has seemingly lost any sense of proportion. It cites the case of Christopher Ratte, a professor of archaeology, who tried to buy his seven-year-old son a bottle of lemonade at a baseball game. He was handed a bottle of Mike’s Hard Lemonade, an alcoholic drink, by mistake. Officials noticed the boy sipping the drink and immediately whisked him off to hospital. He was fine. But the family was condemned to legal hell: the police at first put the seven-year-old into a foster home and a judge ruled that he could go home only if his father moved out. It took several days of legal wrangling to reunite the family. If this seems to be just a one off case think again. At

iLocal

Tuesday (31) night’s tax seminar it was reported that anyone who lives in the Cayman Islands who are US citizens, green card holders or even just have spent more than 183 days in any calendar year in the United States, are all required to file tax returns in the US, as they may be liable to pay tax there. According to US tax expert Shawn P Wolf, filing tax returns did not automatically make the individual liable to actually pay tax as certain exemptions or exclusions applied, particularly for those people who truly lived and worked outside the US. The only way to apply for such exemption is to file a return in the first place. Even Cayman residents who have spent over 183 days in the US for medical purposes, such as for cancer treatment, are also required to file tax returns. The USA is only one of three countries in the world that taxes its citizens when they live and work abroad. “If the IRS gets to you first they have the ability to deny you the Section 9-11 exclusion,” attorney Shawn P. Wolf said at the same seminar. Section 9-11 exclusion applies to people living and working outside the US and permitted to earn US$95,100 this year before becoming liable to pay tax, but Wolf confirmed that this figure was not fixed and changed annually. So wherever you live, and you are in any way an American, you are not as free as you think you are.

Premier welcomes new appointments In a message disseminated to the Civil Service, Premier McKeeva Bush welcomed the appointments of Mr. Franz Manderson and other senior civil servants today. The Premier’s welcome message was as follows: “As Mr. Franz Manderson takes up his appointment today in the role of Deputy Governor, I wish to express a hearty welcome to him in my capacity as Premier, and to express the confidence of the elected Government, that his tenure in office will be a progressive one. We have noted, too, that all civil servants may look forward to the enhancement of the civil servant’s perceived value, under Mr. Manderson’s leadership. You may expect a heightened recognition of the value of the great service you all offer to the public of the Cayman

Islands, as well as to our many shortand longer-term guests. He will no doubt call on you to keep to or exceed those standards. Mr. Manderson is a dedicated, capable, and hard-working civil servant, and goes out of his way to facilitate the application of similar qualities by those in public service. We wish him every success in this, as we face our emerging challenges, and as we place renewed emphasis on pulling together for the common good. We know Mr. Manderson will be a great asset as we strive to attain, and sustain, the dynamism and reliability, the insight and the foresight, that are necessary to establish peace, order and good government amongst and for the people of the Cayman Islands. In the mutual interests of that call to service, I welcome him.

Today also marks the appointment of a first Chief of Staff to the Premier. I am particularly pleased at Mr. Donnie Ebanks’ announcement of Mr. Leonard Dilbert’s appointment to this position. I have worked closely with Mr. Dilbert, and have watched his entire career. No better or more capable person could have been chosen from within the civil service to support and assist me in the performance of the policy leadership role that falls to me as Premier; and to take forward the good governance of our Islands, working in conjunction with all Chief Officers. I am also most pleased to note today the appointment by the new Deputy Governor of three new Chief Officers; three capable men, who we are confident will bear well the large responsibilities assigned to them.

Pioneer of rap reggae, King Stitt, dies at 72 KINGSTON, Jamaica (AP) — King Stitt, a pioneer in rap reggae, died Tuesday in his Caribbean homeland of Jamaica. He was 72. Stitt died at his home in the capital of Kingston after a long fight with prostate cancer and diabetes, said Jamaican musicologist Bunny Goodison, who was a close friend to the performer for more than 50 years. Stitt had recently been discharged from a public hospital. The entertainer known offstage as Winston Sparks started his musical career in the late 1950s on Kingston’s circuit of sound systems, a sort of portable disco. Stitt is credited as one of the earliest performers of “toasting,” a vibrant form of Jamaican deejaying that directly inspired hip-hop music. He is best known for songs like “Paradise Plum” and “Fire Corner.”

He was a close collaborator of the late music producer Clement “Sir Coxsone” Dodd, who ran the celebrated Studio One and guided Stitt’s career for years. Born with disfigured facial features, Stitt, who was also missing numerous teeth, dubbed himself “The Ugly One.” “Without being disrespectful, Stitt made a mark vocally and visually. Because of his image everyone knew him,” Goodison said Tuesday. Big Youth, a veteran Jamaican deejay whose real name is Manley Augustus Buchanan, said he vividly recalled his times as a boy watching Stitt’s unique performances in the 1960s. “He was the first king. Stitt really did a lot for the music, always had a nice vibe,” Big Youth said. Stitt is survived by a daughter.

Philippine military helping accused general MANILA, Philippines (AP) — An international human rights watchdog said Wednesday it has information that sympathetic Philippine military personnel were thwarting attempts by civilian authorities to capture a former army general accused of kidnapping two student activists. Retired Maj. Gen. Jovito Palparan has been on the run since he was charged in December with kidnapping two left-wing activists in 2006. The students remain missing. Palparan, a former congressman who was close to former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, has denied any involvement. He is the highest-ranking military official to face allegations of abuse that human rights groups say has long been tolerated in the Philippines. Rights groups and a U.N. investigator have blamed security forces for the deaths and disappearances of about 1,000 activists between 2001 and 2010, when Arroyo was president.

Human Rights Watch said civilian officials told the group that Palparan is being protected by some military personnel and business owners who benefited from his heavy-headed tactics to suppress a long-running communist insurgency. “There are concerns that the military may be interfering in the civilian judicial process,” the New York-based watchdog said in a statement. Military officials have denied allegations of sheltering Palparan and two soldiers accused with him, and they have promised to cooperate in the investigation against them. In December, however, a group of active and retired military officials publicly defended Palparan and warned that his prosecution was causing “demoralization in the soldiers’ ranks.” The other soldiers charged, Lt. Col. Felipe Antado and Staff Sgt. Edgardo Osorio, have surrendered. A court has allowed them to be transferred from civilian to military

custody despite protestation from Justice Secretary Leila de Lima, who said the army failed to inform her where the two are being held, or if they are confined at all. The conservative military has often acted as an influential power broker, and its members have launched several coup attempts since 1986. The deputy Asia director for Human Rights Watch, Elaine Pearson, called on President Benigno Aquino III to put officers and soldiers on notice “that if they block civilian authorities in arresting Palparan, they too face legal consequences.” “President Aquino should get the message to the military that the years of protecting Palparan for grievous abuses are over,” she said. Aquino’s government has said it wants justice for the missing students, Karen Empeno and Sherlyn Cadapan, as part of a push to improve the Philippines’ human rights record after a decade of

rampant abuses during Arroyo’s administration. Arroyo gave the military a free hand in what it had called an all-out war against communist rebels. About 5,000 rural-based communist guerrillas known as the New People’s Army continue to attack military and police outposts, extort money and raid business establishments it accuses of exploiting workers. It is listed by U.S. and European governments as a terrorist organization, but has been engaged in peace talks with the Philippine government.

Valentine’s Day flowers, truths and myths Georgina Wilcox georgina.wilcox@ieyenews.com

For hundreds of years lovers everywhere have celebrated Valentines Day. Where did this tradition start and why do we exchange Valentine’s Day flowers and candies with each other? I have already had published here a full article on the accepted history of St. Valentine but there are some other interesting stories that go along with this tradition. Some may be true and others may be myths but they are all fascinating. So here we go with what might have really been the beginning of sending Valentines Day flowers on Valentines Day.

Why was St. Valentine so important? About 8 hundred years before Valentines Day was established a man named Claudius II was in power in Rome. He felt that marriage was a bad thing because it made poor soldiers out of men. So, he banned marriage from his empire. A Christian soldier called

Valentinus (Valentine) did not agree with this rule, so he would secretly marry couples that came to him. Valentine was caught and soon after he was stoned and then beheaded. His martyrdom caused him to be made a saint.

Valentine Traditions In Wales wooden love spoons were carved and given as gifts on February 14th. Hearts, keys and keyholes were favourite decorations on the spoons. The decoration meant, “You unlock my heart!” In the Middle Ages, young men and women drew names from a bowl to see who their valentines would be. They would wear these names on their sleeves for one week. To wear your heart on your sleeve now means that it is easy for other people to know how you are feeling. In some countries, a young woman may receive a gift of clothing from a young man. If she keeps the gift, it means she will marry him. Some people used to believe that if a woman saw a robin flying overhead on Valentine’s Day, it meant she would marry a sailor. If she saw a sparrow, she would marry a poor man and be very happy. If she saw a goldfinch, she would marry a millionaire. (Darn. Where can I find a goldfinch before the 14th?) A love seat is a wide chair. It was first made to seat one woman and her wide dress. Later, the love seat or courting seat had two sections,

often in an S-shape. In this way, a couple could sit together -- but not too closely! No matter what is true and what is myth, Valentines Day has become big business for the flower, card, and candy companies. Many exist only because of this one day a year. If you’re man and you have a wife or girlfriend (or both – very naughty), and you let Valentines Day go by without getting her flowers or candy, you are going to be in big trouble. Take my advice and put some effort into your gift, too. A carefully chosen Valentine’s Day card will take you a long way; take it from a woman who knows. However, Valentines Day flowers are still your best bet. If you’re lucky enough to have someone who loves you on Valentine’s Day, then you should show him or her how much they mean to you. Those who give Valentine’s Day flowers certainly do contribute to the big money making machine for the florists but this day allows those of you who are not always able to show their loved ones how much they care-how much they really do. I hope the tradition will always be with us no matter how much it costs.

Experts say Gingrich moon base dreams not lunacy

Republican presidential candidate former House Speaker Newt Gingrich

The moon which could become a US state

WASHINGTON (AP) — Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich wants to create a lunar colony that he says could become a U.S. state. There’s his grand research plan to figure out what makes the human brain tick. And he’s warned about electromagnetic pulse attacks leaving America without electricity. To some people, these ideas sound like science fiction. But mostly they are not. Several science policy experts say the former House speaker’s ideas are based in mainstream science. But somehow, Gingrich manages to make them sound way out there, taking them first a small step and then a giant leap further than where other politicians have gone. Gingrich’s promise that “by the end of my second term we will have the first permanent base on the moon” got amped up in a recent debate in Florida, which lost thousands of jobs with the end of the space shuttle programme. By then, the lunar base had become a colony and even a potential state, and his moon ideas were ridiculed by rival Mitt Romney. Returning to the moon and building an outpost there is not new. Until three years ago, it was U.S. policy and billions of dollars were spent on that idea. Staying on the moon dates at least to 1969, when a government committee recommended that NASA first build a winged, reusable space shuttle followed by a space station and then a moon

18

outpost. In 1989, President George H.W. Bush proposed going to the moon and staying there. Sixteen years later, in 2005, his son, President George W. Bush, proposed a similar lunar outpost, phased out the space shuttle programme and spent more than $9 billion designing a return to the moon programme. George Washington University space policy director Scott Pace, who was NASA’s associate administrator in the second Bush administration and is a Romney supporter, said the 2020 lunar base date Gingrich mentioned was feasible when it was proposed in 2005. But it is no longer, felled by funding cuts and President Barack Obama’s decision to cancel the programme. Pace said it would be hard to figure out when NASA could get back to the moon, but that such a return is doable. What kept killing return-to-the moon plans were the costs, starting in 1969. The proposal died 20 years later when the price tag was released: more than $700 billion in current dollars. The second President Bush’s plans started running into problems due to insufficient funding. After a special commission said those plans were not sustainable, Obama cancelled the return-to-the-moon programme. Instead, he ordered NASA to aim astronauts toward an asteroid and eventually Mars, something many space experts say is even more ambitious. “Some of you may like it and you

may dislike it, but I gave the boldest explanation of going into space since John F. Kennedy in 1961,” Gingrich said this week in Florida. “I believe in an America of big ideas and big solutions. I believe if we unleash the American people we will rebuild the American dream.” In Florida, nearly all the Republican presidential candidates promoted private companies sending astronauts into space. Several companies are building private spaceships. Commercial space companies taking over the job of getting Americans into low Earth orbit is a cornerstone of the Obama space plan. But, again, money has been an issue. For example, NASA received $406 million in its current budget for private space programmes. Obama had asked Congress for $805 million. Neal Lane, former head of the National Science Foundation and White House science adviser during the Clinton administration, said Gingrich’s proposals aren’t crazy, although he may disagree with some of them. Gingrich’s ideas and actions are “very pro-science,” said Lane, who credited Gingrich with protecting federal science research from budget cuts in the 1990s. “He’s on the edge of mainstream thinking about big science. Except for the idea of establishing a colony on the moon, it’s not over the edge,” added Syracuse University science policy professor Henry Lambright. to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

Accent tables Georgina Wilcox

georgina.wilcox@ieyenews.com

Accent tables are the perfect completion to any room in your home. You can use them to update the style of your room from contemporary to classic or modern to elegance. Whether it is a table for your living room, bathroom, or library. Few pieces of home décor offer home owners the ability to express themselves like accent tables. It is not only their look, but also they have a great deal of functionality. Most of the time people use accent tables to express themselves. Because of the great number of accent tables out on the market, home owners can purchase tables that are different sizes and shapes. Some of the best places to find these great accent tables are on the Internet. Internet dealers offer the same service as some of the large jewellry warehouses, but they do it at a fraction of the price.

to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

These days, home owners don’t have to settle for the old styles of accent tables that their parents probably had. Everything about homes has become much more modern and that includes the tables. New look accent tables are usually more readily available online because furniture warehouses are always much slower to adjust to the new trends. A quick search for accent tables will yield results about a number of different styles that can all look good in a modern home. Though these things might look a little bit out of place in a traditional home, they are absolutely perfect for new style homes. One of the most popular accent tables on the market today is the modern Nelson bench. This bench is actually more like a coffee table and it provides a great look for any home. The design is simple, as it features wooden connecting bars to hold it

together and provide the table top surface. Since manufacturers realise that home owners have different needs depending upon their home structure, this item and many other accent tables are made in different sizes. The smallest size that one will find is the 48 inch by 18 inch table, while larger tables can be as big as 72 inches by 26 inches. Meridian accent tables are another popular design. These tables are a little bit less sturdy and being smaller, they cannot put up with some of the abuse that other tables can handle. These accent tables are low to the ground and they have a glass table top. The look is absolutely modern and many young home owners are looking to items like this in order to dress up their living room. Riverside accent tables are also very popular with many very different styles including Stone Forge that has ornamental metal legs supporting the highly polished wooden tops. Accent tables are an excellent way to dress up your home, while adding functionality and value. In today’s home market, look is very important in determining the value of a home. Some nice pieces of décor can make all of the difference in helping to push the value of your home upwards and desirable. In addition, you can enjoy the beauty and function of great accent tables every single day. Whether you live in a modern or traditional home, there are wonderful looking accent tables available at reasonable prices. Prince Harry’s duty: Beach volleyball in Rio LONDON (AP) — Prince Harry will combine sports, military exercises and meetings with school children and locals on his first-ever trip as an official representative of Queen Elizabeth II, palace officials said Wednesday. His destinations sound pleasant, at least to Brits freezing in the February cold. The red-haired prince will travel to Bahamas, Belize, Jamaica and Brazil, where he will find the time for a few games of beach volleyball in Rio de Janeiro. He also plans a visit to Usain Bolt Stadium in Jamaica, where he hopes to meet the Olympic great. Most of the trip is connected to the queen’s diamond jubilee celebrations in British realms throughout the world. While Harry prepares for this jaunt, his older brother Prince William is about to start a sixweek military deployment to the Falklands Islands, where he will serve as a search and rescue helicopter pilot. Officials have not confirmed William’s departure date because of operational security concerns amid indications that his departure

Prince Harry meets children during a visit to Barbados last year

is imminent. Tensions over the disputed islands — claimed by both Britain and Argentina — have risen in recent weeks. Argentina refers to the islands as Las Malvinas. Palace officials Wednesday confirmed that William and his wife, the Duchess of Cambridge, recently acquired a black male cocker spaniel who is expected to keep the former Kate Middleton

company while William is on military duty. The puppy is several months old and was part of a litter known to the royal couple through a family connection. The queen, in a rare concession to her advancing years, has asked her children and grandchildren to attend jubilee festivities overseas, and she asked Harry to travel to the Caribbean on her behalf. She and her husband, Prince Philip — who is 90 and has heart problems — will limit their jubilee travels to the United Kingdom. Harry also plans to travel to Brazil at the tail end of the trip at the request of the British government on a trip to promote ties and emphasize the transition from the upcoming 2012 London Games to the summer Olympics to be held in Rio in four years time. Hence the beach volleyball in Rio. Officials won’t say which beach has been chosen, but it won’t be Copacabana or Ipanema, the city’s two most famous. The matches also may disappoint photographers longing for the chance to catch the prince playing sports with female volleyball stars. Officials say it is likely to be a men’s only game. Harry will also take part in a polo match while in Brazil. Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton,

Harry’s private secretary, said Harry is excited about the trip. “Prince Harry is really bouncing about this tour, that’s the first thing to say. He’s hugely, hugely looking forward to it,” said Lowther-Pinkerton. “The tour’s itinerary reflects, with its mixture of formality and informality, Prince Harry’s wish to pay personal tribute to his grandmother the Queen but also to spend time wherever possible with young people in all three countries.” The prince is expected to arrive in Belize on March 2. The diamond jubilee festivities in Belize will include a raucous street party, Lowther-Pinkerton said, and Harry will also have a chance to tour a Mayan temple and meet with school children and military forces. In the Bahamas, officials say Harry will give a speech chronicling the royal family’s links to the islands and take part in a maritime security operation. He plans a number of events in Jamaica, including a stop at Usain Bolt Stadium. Officials say they hope Bolt is able to meet with the prince, despite the sprinter’s intense training schedule, and may be willing to offer Harry a few pointers about how to get a quick start in a race. to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

Many turning points for Giants, Patriots

“The Cancer Society staff truly care for cancer patients” New England Patriots running back Kevin Faulk

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — One game, one play, one moment can turn a team’s fortunes in the right direction. The opposite seems to be the case for the New York Giants and New England Patriots, who recognize many turning points on their way to Sunday’s Super Bowl. Oddly, the victory that put each of them on winning streaks that have not ended came against the New York Jets. Yet few players, coaches or even the teams’ owners pointed to that as a critical juncture in their chase for another NFL championship. Some even believe the path to the Super Bowl was set by off-field situations, including having key players get healthy or developing team chemistry. Outside of destiny or fate, the Giants and Patriots offered up just about every reason imaginable for their success during Tuesday’s media day — without getting too specific. “I don’t think you can point to one thing,” Giants cornerback Corey Webster said, “but I do know when you develop good chemistry, when you don’t have anyone pointing fingers, it does not matter what happened the week before. We reached that point, we kept fighting and fighting to win on the field, and we are here today.” Here being Lucas Oil Stadium, a place the Giants (12-7) couldn’t see for all the losses they experienced after going 6-2. They dropped four in a row — three to eventual division winners — and five of six before that “road” game against the local to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning

rival Jets. By then, the Giants knew each week brought an elimination game. They’ve won all of those to reach their second Super Bowl in four years, against the team whose unbeaten season they wrecked in the 2008 title game. “When we came out of the Dallas game (a 37-34 victory to break the slide), I thought that would be it,” Giants owner John Mara said of turning the season around. “Then we come out so flat (against Washington). So that wasn’t it.” The Giants dropped to 7-7, then manhandled the Jets with a fierce defense. That victory coincided with important players such as DE Justin Tuck and LB Michael Boley getting healthy enough to play up to their usual high standards. Defensive end Osi Umenyiora also was close to returning from an ankle injury. “We came together against the Jets and we started playing very well as a defense,” Umenyiora said, “but definitely health had something to do with that. Obviously, we had a lot of guys who are key components who missed a lot of games. The minute we were able to get everyone together, we all took off.” Health also was a major factor for the Patriots (15-3), who took off following a home loss to the Giants. They went to the Meadowlands and routed the Jets in a much-hyped game — just as the “Battle of New York” would be ballyhooed seven weeks later — and kept right on going, straight to Indy and their fifth

Super Bowl with coach Bill Belichick and quarterback Tom Brady. New England took particular joy in that victory over the Jets, but found even more satisfaction in piling up the wins while undermanned. “Not sure there’s a turning point as far as one game or anything,” linebacker Jerod Mayo said. “I think that it’s just having the same group of guys out there as the past couple of weeks. We’re finally coming together and getting guys healthy.” Still, there must be a hallmark moment. A Brady touchdown pass, perhaps. A Rob Gronkowski catchand-plow-over-a-defender score. Nope. Not even Sterling Moore’s stripping of the ball from Baltimore receiver Lee Evans in the end zone, a pass that if completed would have lifted the Ravens into the Super Bowl. “I don’t think about it,” Moore said when asked about a turning point. “I think there’s a lot of plays that helped us get here. (Brandon) Spikes’ interception and the way Vince (Wilfork) played that game; I’m just glad I had an opportunity to make a play.” So, for all the spectacular plays, crucial wins and dramatic moments in their seasons, nothing truly qualified as a trendsetter? “That’s not the way a season goes,” Giants left guard Kevin Boothe said. “There’s lots of twists and turns, sure, but even with the streak of losses we had, we still had all our goals in front of us. That’s all you can really ask for.”

Hamilton pledges to put problems behind him Lewis Hamilton says he is confident he has resolved the problems which blighted him for much of last season. The McLaren driver admitted 2011 was his worst in F1, but believes a winter away has led to a more positive mindset as he approaches the 2012 campaign. “I feel very fresh,” the 27-year-old former world champion said at the launch of McLaren’s new car. “Whichever issues I had I’ve worked hard to clarify and make sure I come into this year without any worries.” He added: “I feel very clear in my mind so I feel I can arrive on the right foot.” Hamilton spent the winter training in the Rocky Mountains in Colorado, USA. “It feels fantastic to be back,” he said. “I have been training an incredible amount over the winter but just in the right way - I gave myself plenty of time to recover and recuperate.” He had an up-and-down time in 2011, with three wins interspersed with numerous on-track collisions and

some off-track controversies. Asked what he had learned from his travails, he said: “I think I’ve just matured. I’m 27 now. It’s the way you behave, the way you handle yourself, ways you interact with the team. “There are definitely things I can pay more attention to and work harder on. Most important is focus, to be world champion again. “The car looks great. I saw it for the first time three days ago. I think it looks beautiful. Last year’s car looked a bit different - this one looks like a real car. “It’s very clean at the back, and that’s not fake. That’s how the car is. I hope it drives as well as it looks.” The McLaren will run for the first time with test driver Oliver Turvey at the wheel in a brief aerodynamic test in Spain at the weekend, before Hamilton’s team-mate Jenson Button takes over for the first two days of the first official pre-season test at Jerez from Tuesday. Button was bullish about the team’s prospects of taking the fight this year

to Red Bull and Sebastian Vettel, who dominated last season on their way to winning the drivers’ and constructors’ titles for the second consecutive year. “I feel there’s not an area we haven’t really worked on, so we have no excuses,” Button said. “F1 is a very competitive business at the moment in terms of the drivers - six world champions - but also the teams. “Red Bull, Ferrari, ourselves, Mercedes will be strong. But for us, we go out there to win the championship and that has to be our aim from the get-go.”

Olympic Stadium 16 parties interested West Ham FC are believed to be one of the 16 parties to have expressed an interest in moving to the Olympic Stadium after the 2012 Games. The Championship club had looked set to move into the venue but a deal with Newham Council collapsed in October. The government opened a tender process on 20 December and bidders have until 23 March to submit

22

full proposals. The Olympic Park Legacy Company (OPLC) revealed the numbers after the 30 January deadline passed. A spokesperson for the OPLC said: “There have been 16 registrations from parties interested in bidding to use the stadium after the Games. They now have until 23 March 2012 to submit their full bids.

“The Legacy Company plans to appoint the winning bidders in May 2012 and remains on track to reopen the venue in 2014.” Challenges from Leyton Orient and Tottenham Hotspur, as well as an anonymous complaint to the European Commission, led to fears that the battle for use of the stadium could go on for years. However, after West Ham’s bid collapsed it was decided that a new tender process would be opened in December 2011 for an anchor tenant at the venue and the government revealed the stadium would remain in public ownership. The OPLC also reiterated that the athletics track remaining in place is a non-negotiable part of the process. The spokesperson added: “Each successful bidder will add to the athletics legacy already secured for the stadium, including the new national centre for athletics and host of the 2017 World Athletics Championships.” to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

United turn up the heat after City slip Paul Kennedy

paul.kennedy@ieyenews.com

Sir Alex Ferguson said that Manchester United drawing level on points with Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table was “obviously significant” in the title race. “It’s been a good night,” the United manager said a his side won and City lost at Everton. “But it’s still only the last day in January. I always see March as the important month and we’ve got City away in April.” Ferguson will feel he scored another point over City with the signing of defender Frederic Veseli who was at Old Trafford having completed his switch. The 19-yearold Swiss under-20 international, who has been at City for four years, will initially join up with United’s reserve team. Veseli did not make a first-

team appearance for City and was allowed to leave because he was out of contract in the summer. “United have a long history of younger players coming through and hopefully I can follow and do the same,” he said. Ferguson added that he thought his depleted team had been “terrific” in defeating Stoke. “We kept our composure and were patient,” he said. “OK, we won with two penalties, but the manner in which we played our football was the main thing.” He said he was relieved that Javier Hernandez appeared to be returning to form and that United had suffered a “right nightmare” with goalkeepers Anders Lindegaard and David De Gea both being injured in the same training session which led to a league debut for 21-year-old Ben Amos. “We are hopeful Wayne Rooney

and Nani and Ashley Young might be back for Sunday,” he said of the prospects of United’s injury list shortening before their next league match, away to Chelsea. Stoke manager Tony Pulis said he felt that United might now have the advantage in the title race. “The one thing United have got over City is that they have won the league) before and they get stronger after Christmas,” he added. Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini blamed himself for his side’s potentially damaging defeat at Everton on Tuesday night. The Italian conceded he had been complacent having watched City’s three-point lead at the top of the Premier League get wiped out following a 1-0 defeat at Goodison Park. Former Manchester United midfielder Darron Gibson, whose old club now trail the leaders only

on goal difference, scored the only goal of the game on the hour. Mancini said: “I didn’t prepare well for this game. I thought it was maybe easier. I know here it is never easy, never.” Elsewhere Liverpool took their impressive cup form into the league with a 3-0 win over Wolves thanks to Goals from Andy Carroll, Craig Bellamy and Dirk Kuyt. It moves Liverpool into fifth spot above Arsenal. Chelsea needed a late equaliser at Swansea to salvage a point piling more pressure on manager Andre Villas Boas. It was also another flat day for Fernando Torres who once again failed to find the back of the net. Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp – currently on trial for tax charges – saw his side overcome Wigan by three goals to one at White Hart Lane.

LOCAL

First round results of the 2012 PwC Men’s Invitational It was a fantastic evening of tennis at the Cayman Islands Tennis Club! It will only get better starting on Wednesday at 5:30pm. We have completed the first round of the 2012 PwC Men’s Invitational on Tuesday with the completion of 8 matches. So far, we have only had one surprise in the tournament; unfortunately one of the participants that were coming from overseas had to pull out of the tournament last minute due to an injury. Ilian Nachev, a local pro from the Ritz, benefited by receiving the “injury bye” from Marvin Rolle of the Bahamas. In Tuesday’s action we saw the number one seed of the tournament and last year’s winner, Marcio Torres, take on one of Cayman’s own and 2012 PwC Open Champ, in a closer than expected victory over Mica Koll 6-3, 6-3. Mica showed some good patience in the match and fought a hard battle. It was a great experience for Mica playing one of the ATP ranked professionals in this year’s event. Marcio does look as though he may have some competition this year from the first time comer, Stefano Ianni from Italy. Stefano Ianni is still playing on the ATP Tour currently, played the tough clay court foe of Raul Gurailnick of Chile in the first round. While defeating Raul 6-1, 6-1 the match was much closer than the score would suggest and very entertaining for the crowd that was able to witness it. The Jamaicans that have come to this year’s tournament have all made it past the first round. Yussof Migoko, a Jamaican Davis Cup player, defeated local youngster Alex Leonard in a

long 6-2, 6-2 match and Marcus Malcolm defeated Rob Weins 7-6, 6-3. McCoy Malcolm, a brother of Marcus’, defeated our very own Adam Bayley 6-1, 6-4. This is the third year that the Jamaicans have come back to this PwC Men’s Invitational tournament. “We have a great time coming to this tournament every year! We had a couple of our other teammates that were coming however, they had some last minute details that prevented them from coming but hopefully next year” Marcus Malcolm was quoted. “Yes, Rob, Dale and Adam put on a fantastic show. And I am happy to make it out her for my second run for some prize money. This is a fantastic club and the members are also very friendly and supportive” quoted by Yussof Migoko. The tournament’s third seed from Barbados, who is ATP ranked, Haydn Lewis, defeated our very own Dale Avery 6-1, 6-2. The match was much more entertaining than the score indicates. Andres De

Armas, from Venezuela, faced another local, Nikhil Jha. Andres was victorious in his match winning 6-1, 6-1. The action does not stop here! We will be having the singles quarter finals on Wednesday with two singles matches at 5:30pm and another two at 7pm. We will also begin the 2012 PwC Men’s Doubles competition on Wednesday evening which will follow the singles matches at approx. 8:30pm. The semi finals will be on Friday starting at 5:30pm and then the finals of the singles will be taking place on Saturday at 4:30pm with the doubles final shortly following. Wednesday, Singles Quarter Finals: Starting at 5:30pm Doubles Master Round, Starting at 8:30pm Thursday, All Doubles Round Robin: Starting at 6pm Friday, Singles Semi Finals: Starting at 5:30pm Saturday, Men’s Singles Final: Starting at 4:30pm Men’s Doubles Final, Following the Singles Final The Cayman Islands Tennis Club would like to thank PwC for taking on the primary sponsorship for this tournament for the sixth straight year. Without them it would not be possible. We would also like to thank our first year sponsor Cayman National. The tennis this week will truly be some amazing entertainment and we do hope that all of you can take advantage of the talent that we have here at the moment. There is no cost to watch the matches and throughout the week, food will be provided by Caribos, so bring your empty stomachs and enjoy some terrific tennis!
