STILL MISSING Police release CCTV footage of Kerran, 25 Tad Stoner and Paul Kennedy
These are the last images of missing 25 year old Kerran Baker. The Jamaican born woman has not been seen since Saturday. Her car was found abandoned on wasteland near Pedro’s Castle. Last night police released CCTV footage of Kerran, known as Kerry, shopping at the Fosters Supermarket in Countryside. But senior detectives searching for the Miss Baker, who worked at Dr Ruthlyn Pomares surgery in Rankin’s Plaza admitted they “do not have a clue” where she is. And they said they have a team of 18 officers who are primarily focused on finding Miss Baker. Yesterday Detective Superintendent Marlon Bodden said: “We are very concerned for her safety now. “We have spoken to her associates, friends, residents off island. We have done a thorough forensic exam of the car in situ and a quarter mile into the bushes. “We continue to search using K-9, air support and in water activity to see if any clothing or other articles have been dropped. But he ruled out the possibility that the missing woman may have had a stalker. Mobile phone companies have also been contacted to try and pinpoint the exact location of her cell using telephone masts. But CS Jones admitted: “At the moment we do not have a clue as to where she is. We are doing a finger search looking to find a ring, earring or anything, “We have 18 officers focused primarily on this particular job “As with any missing persons we always carry out an historical background. But there has been no suggestion that she was ever stalked. “She enjoyed a very active social life, she gets out quite often and she has lots of friends. “We have looked at the usual technical means, telephones and cell sites. have explored it fully with both the telephone companies.” A suitcase found in the trunk of her white Honda Civic has also been analysed but police are struggling to find any significance as to why she had it in her car. CS Jones added: “Who owns that suitcase? Do the contents belong to her? At the moment we cannot point to any significance.” The CCTV images show Miss Baker at the supermarket around 6.45pm on Saturday evening. “One of the things that concern us was that none of the perishables from her shopping had been put away,” the leading detective said. Meanwhile an appeal on the social networking site Facebook encouraged residents to help the search for missing Kerry last night. Scores of people gathered at Pedro’s Castle to look for clues that might lead police to her whereabouts.

iStrange Abbey puts ranching operation out to pasture
RICHARDTON, N.D. (AP) — A Roman Catholic monastery in North Dakota is putting its ranching operation out to pasture because it lacks monks with cowboy skills. Abbot Brian Wangler tells The Dickinson Press that ranching has been a part of Assumption Abbey since 1893, when it was in Devil’s Lake. He says raising cattle helped make the monastery self-sufficient. He says two monks now care for 260 cows at the Richardton abbey, but only one has the skills to do it by himself. Seventy-six-year-old Brother Placid Gross has tended the monastery’s cattle for 51 years and says it once had one of the biggest ranching operations in the region. He says he won’t miss the hard work but will miss the cows. Wangler says the abbey will rent its pastures to other ranchers.
Facebook page lists bear sightings
SITKA, Alaska (AP) — Residents of Sitka, Alaska, are using social media to share reports about bear activity in the area. KCAW radio reports the Facebook site “Sitka Bear Report” already has more than 200 followers. The page details bear sightings in the southeast Alaska city, where more bears have been sighted because of a poor berry crop and dry weather. Police report more than 100 calls about problem bears, including one dead dog and some chickens. But police caution that doesn’t seem to be an unusually high number. State Fish and Game area management biologist Phil Mooney says it might just seem like they are more bears around now because of the late spring and a lack of bear activity earlier this summer.

Tropical Storm Emily – Where will she go? WHERE FINE FOOD IS MATCHED BY BEAUTIFUL SCENERY on the waterfront located on the edge of the

Could Tropical Storm Emily be a threat to Cayman? At this stage, it’s uncertain as to which path the tropical storm will take and whether it may be a threat to the residents of the Cayman Islands. Tropical Storm Emily was close to Puerto Rico yesterday morning moving westward at around 12 knots. Clusters of scattered moderate/strong convection were just east of the Lesser Antilles this morning. High rain accumulation is expected in some areas, 2-4 inches in the North Windward Islands and Leeward Islands, 4-6 in Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic.
There is also the possibility of 10 inches in isolated areas. These levels of rain accumulation could cause flash floods and mudslides in mountainous terrain. An upper ridge in the North West Caribbean is anchored West of the Cayman Islands generating scattered showers and possible thunderstorms over the Yucatan. As of yesterday morning at 11:00 am, there were tropical storm warnings for Puerto Rico, Vieques, Culebra and Hispaniola (The Dominican Republic and Haiti). There was also a tropical storm watch for the US Virgin Islands.
The closest path to Cayman had seen Tropical Storm Emily heading over Jamaica and Cuba. The Cayman Islands National Weather Service (CINWS) says there is no immediate threat to the Cayman Islands from Emily but that they do advise people to monitor the system. If there are any threatening changes in Emily’s path the (CINWS) will notify the public immediately. Further wait for crew of stricken vessel Kevin Creary The crew who were miraculously rescued at sea when their boat sank still face an anxious wait before they can be reunited with their families. Miss Janice got into difficulties five hours after setting off from Cayman, heading to Honduras. And after the boat sank, the six-man crew drifted on life rafts for nine days before they were eventually picked up by the oil tanker, CPO Sweden. Yesterday, the boat’s owner Travis Welcome said they were due to dock in Houston late last night. But it’s not clear when they will be able to return to their homes in East End. Mr Welcome said: “We are not sure yet but we are supposed to get to Houston around 7pm. “We have been receiving excellent treatment onboard the CPO Sweden. A few days ago there were some issues with our documentation but that has all been cleared up. “It’s hard to think what the first thing I would say when I get back to my family. I have a photograph of my
wife and I look at it all the time. “Part of the reason I survived is because I have given my life to the Lord for 20 years. It was my prayers and those of other people that helped us get found. “Some of the other crew thought that we were not going to make it. We were in the open sea and their was nothing for thousands of miles. “We prayed and talked to each other to get reassurance. The nights were very cold and we couldn’t wait to see the daylight. “Nobody slept and we stayed awake for long periods of time.” The ship had docked at New
Orleans but the crew stayed onboard and instead of disembarking, headed to Houston. Are Jamaicans still proud of their independence? Kevin Creary
the Afrocentric decorum, which guided Jamaica to their independence, is a tenacious rock. A lingering suggestion that social and economic decline have demoralised Jamaican liberty, is woefully inaccurate. Jamaicans are impermeable and resolute in their advocacy of freedom. They are cognisant of the implications of their poor leadership, and savour the glory of former wealth. But they have not relented, and are still passionate about freedom. Every Jamaican supports their independence today just as much as they did in 1962 when they became independent. The audacious temperament and complexion of their nationalism has no interest in the dishonour of our dear former colonialists. There was no impertinence, malice or disdain for the former rulers. The corruption and imprudence that have almost become synonymous with Jamaican politics is arguably a consequence of slavery. The absence of a steady and strategically schematised transition from “have not” to authority has been sadly lacking. Let’s not be fooled, the credentials of fiscal responsibility and prudence cannot be magically incurred; it requires the meticulous grooming, which was not found in slavery. Our independence was not founded on the premise of synthetic pride or simply to rejoice that we did it. Jamaica became independent for one reason and that is for all the future generations to reap the benefits of a unique heritage. The Jamaican audacity is what is responsible for the phenomenon of Bob Marley, Asafa Powell, Usain Bolt, the World Cup qualifying football team (Reggae Boyz), the sensational bob sled team of 1988, Sean Paul, Shabba Rankin, the national net ball team (Sunshine Merlene Ottey, Mike “The Reggae Boyz” Jamaica’s National Girls), Mcallum, Veronica Campbell, and Football team. Prima facie, independence boasts an attractive menu for political profiling, but is it practical? Pundits employ the Jamaican example to measure the benefits and likelihood of a successful Caymanian independence, without much success. Although miniscule, opinions that Jamaica would be much better off, had it not been for their independence, are intermittently expressed. Prior to their independence, Jamaica, the home of reggae music, was the primary location for Caymanians in search of economic mobility and success. Not only was Jamaica considered to be among the most pristine beauties of the world, but it also had a social and economic environment that was the envy and gem of the Caribbean. Under the distinguished patronage of its Colonial “mother country”, the Jamaican dollar was once stronger than that of the United States. Be it bad timing or poor judgment, the acquisition of independence appeared to have thwarted their economic success, leaving the concept and ideals of governmental liberation through independence something to despise. As an ideal, the coveted status of being self-governed has enjoyed some discreet optimism, however, the evidence of crime and economic hardship in the reggae capital does not do much justice for their signature of pride. But do Jamaicans regret having gained independence? Although the sentimentality of Jamaica’s contribution to the political and social landscaping of the Cayman Islands is dwindling,

all the men and women who have heeded the call to stand up and be counted. An arguable consequence of colonial submission is that it can instigate the idea of monarchial obligation to the colony, which could result in political malignancy and a dependent mentality. Ideally, independence should encompass the responsible and strategic acceptance and will to govern with prudence and integrity. An independent nation is one with an unapologetic commitment to the constructive utility and celebration of freedom. Any definition of government that does not credibly constitute an independent will or political ambit to create, remodel or implement policies that are crucial to its socioeconomic survival, mimics political integrity and governance. Hope that a branch from a politically subdued nation will one day acquire the science of politics is not just far-fetched, but also redundant. A phenomenon of this kind of government is that it allows for enough feeling of leadership to mimic complete authority without creating an atmosphere, which is more conducive to global integrity. This political template recruits and propagates an inferior style of leadership, which confiscates political wisdom. Every Independence Day provides us with a glorious opportunity to reiterate the unequivocal and indestructible fact that Jamaicans have emancipated themselves from mental slavery. “Hardships there are, but the land is green, and the sun shineth. Happy Independence Jamaica!”

Body of 11 year old found in a river STEWARTSTOWN, N.H. (AP) — The body of an 11-year-old New Hampshire girl who disappeared almost a week ago was discovered Monday in a river less than half a mile from her home, authorities said. The death was being considered suspicious. Celina Cass was reported missing July 26. Divers found her body late Monday morning near a hydroelectric dam that spans the Connecticut River between Stewartstown and Canaan, Vt., and removed it from the river Monday evening, said New Hampshire Senior Assistant Attorney General Jane Young.
“We have brought Celina home, obviously not the way we wanted to bring her home,” said Young, her voice breaking with emotion. Authorities had said that Celina, who lived with her older sister, mother and stepfather a mile from the Canadian border, was last seen at a computer around 9 p.m. on July 25 and was gone the next morning. Police said there was no sign of a struggle, and there was no indication she ran away or that someone took her. Young declined to say whether there are any suspects in the girl’s death. “We have made no determination on
where her body was eventually put in the river,” she said. An autopsy was scheduled for Tuesday to determine the cause and manner of death.

The no questions asked gun amnesty has now been extended for another 28 days and two local businesses have partnered with the RCIPS to have an “Operations Cash ‘n’ Guns’ initiative. As DS Bodden has said, “We will do whatever we can to persuade people to hand in their guns”. I still have to question why we need to have a set period for an amnesty? Why not make it yearly? Why not extend it indefinitely? Guns remain on the streets and it seems to me those numbers are growing. Any small time piece of low life seems to have access to a gun. Where are they getting them? In such a small community someone knows? In the UK, there was always the ‘copper’s nark’ – someone who informed on the criminals for a ‘price’. Here people are frightened. The RCIPS have lost the trust of the people and that is going to be a very hard road to mend. The recent revelation of a missing gun(s) and still no word
about what is happening about it –“ongoing enquiries” is the official stance – and the spate of unsolved shootings, even with big reward incentives for information, has not increased our confidence. Even when the police make arrests and it goes to trial the level of wins is one sided – the wrong way! Until the general public feels safe, and the police are showing signs they are winning this battle, sadly it is unlikely those ‘law abiding’ citizens who are illegally in possession of a gun will be handing it in over the next month. A year down the road, when with all the initiatives being put in place start reaping rewards, then the amnesty might produce the results the RCIPS are hoping for. Two Hampshire adventurers are among six sailors attempting to make history by rowing all the way to the magnetic North Pole. Rob Sleep and David Mans – both from New Forest, England have beaten hundreds of rivals to be selected for an expedition led by Polar explorer Jock Wishart. Their crew left Resolute Bay, Canada, Friday (29) night at the start of their 450-mile journey to the top of the world. Their specially designed craft, built by Rossiter Yachts in Christchurch, Dorset, will take between four and six weeks to complete the voyage. Rob a 38-year-old businessman, who was raised in the Cayman Islands said: “I’ve done a few Arctic expeditions with Jock with some of us walking to the magnetic pole, so when he came up with this expedition it seemed like a natural step forward. My biggest challenge – fear if you like – is not knowing what the biggest challenge will be. For all of us,

there’s a sense that we have to be ready mentally and physically for as many things as possible.” Paul Sleep, Rob’s father said, “They are likely to face howling winds that, despite it being the Arctic summer, will bring temperatures down to –15c or 5f. They will also run the risk of being crushed or capsised by moving ice floes.”
An expedition spokesman said: “Jock and his team will brave some of the harshest conditions on Earth. They’ll have to row for hours on end in challenging weather and sub-zero temperatures with little chance for rest or shelter. It’s a feat of extreme physical and mental endurance that has never before been attempted.”

An overview of the Immigration Enforcement Section’s past business year (July 1st 2010 to June 30th 2011) confirms that law breakers experienced a constant flow of arrests, fines and prosecutions. Deputy Chief Immigration Officer, Enforcement, Gary Wong, reports that 198 arrests were made during the period, up from 108 the previous year. The arrests covered 14 types of offences, including overstaying (103 persons) and illegal landing (7 persons). The increase in infringements occurred even though the year kicked off with an immigration amnesty in July 2010 that saw 87 persons (67 males and 20 females) voluntarily depart from Cayman. One individual had overstayed by more than 12 years. While employees are the usual offenders, Mr. Wong says employers are not exempt from enforcement measures. As such, 50 employers were charged for immigration offences while others were warned in relation to this offence. Also, 15 persons were charged with employing foreign nationals without permits, while four were arrested for causing an individual to overstay. Some people faced multiple

charges, and the most common offences were working without a permit or outside the terms of a permit, making false representations and obstruction. A breakdown of nationalities shows that more than half of the offenders (107) were Jamaican, while other top-offending countries were Honduras, Canada, the Cayman Islands, the Philippines, Cuba and the United States. The enforcement option of administering administrative fines resulted in the majority of persons choosing the option to pay monetary penalties rather than go to court. That measure saw the Enforcement Unit collect more than $175,000, a little below the $182,000 of the previous year. Offences such as illegal landing saw all person’s involved prosecuted in court. Boats and other items used for committing such immigration offences were ordered forfeited to the crown. The area of illegal migration also resulted in 40 Cuban migrants being intercepted between July 2010 and June 2011. That was the largest number since 2008, when 207 persons were recorded. “We are continuously working with other agencies to control
the criminal element by targeting and prosecuting those who land illegally, or attempt to do so”, said Chief Immigration Officer Linda Evans. Ms. Evans noted that four Jamaican nationals had been intercepted off North Side in mid-May, during a joint special operation. The operation included contingents from the Royal Cayman Islands Police, HM Customs and Immigration Enforcement Section. The four persons were convicted and sentenced to imprisonment to terms between six and fifteen months for illegal landing and attempted human smuggling. A 32-foot canoe was seized and forfeited to the crown as a result of the operation. Former beauty queen returns to Cayman with exciting new children’s stories Kevin Creary After a period of extensive travel, Cayman Brac native, Rabia Abdul Akim has returned to Cayman to share her worldly experiences through her new books. The intrigue of foreign cultures has inspired the Caymanian writer, former beauty queen, tae kwon do champion, businesswoman and mother of six to write The Kaa Kaa & Tokyo series of books. Growing up in Cayman Brac, Rabia benefited from the camaraderie of island life and after experiencing the uniqueness of life in Saudi Arabia she plans to give back to her country, through the publications. Despite the many hats Rabia wears, she still thinks that there is more she can give, “I always wanted to be a writer, having resided overseas for many years and so I wanted to share my culture with my kids. I am launching a book on the 6th August. It will be the first book of fully developed animated characters for the Cayman Islands.” The former beauty queen admits she enjoyed privileges of representing Cayman, both in her role as Miss Cayman and as tae kwan do champion, but her passion for this dream has always been there. “As an expatriate, residing overseas I recognised the importance of teaching my children about their culture. I have fought vigorously for this dream for 13 years.” Having spent many years away from Cayman’s shores, her wealth of experience has made her more determined to reconnect with her Caribbean heritage. “ I wanted to relay our culture and oral traditions to my children. Instilling in them the love of reading and leaving them with a legacy of literature.” Lady Rabia is the published author of forty-eight short children’s stories and articles for Qkids Comics in Saudi Arabia. Her poetry and photography were featured in a solo exhibit which toured the Cayman Islands for in 2004.

Party Source gave five year old, Diego Quintero a birthday party to remember at the St. George’s Anglican Church Pre-School. Diego, along with his summer classmates enjoyed party bags, a bouncy castle and a Madagascar and Kung-Fu Panda themed day. Party Source owner, Ms. Cherrilin Bodden kindly organised the party when she found out that Diego’s mother, Lelya Quintero, was upset because she could not afford a party for her son this year. Reflections also got in on the opportunity to show their heart by donating a gift to young Diego consisting of bubbles, car set, and beach toys. Ms Bodden said, “We managed to donate all of the decorations, the bouncy castle and the party bags. Normally we give a free party to one lucky child around June or July, but as it happens, we caught wind of this child’s case at the Island Living show
and our heart went out to him. So we decided to do an extra one this year. We are a family run business and we know what family is all about.” Normally Carousel Catering donates the cakes for these bighearted parties, but since this particular party was arranged on very short notice Gina Connolly charitably stepped in instead. Principal of St. George’s PreSchool, Ms. Fernandes said, “Diego is turning five today and I think it is very kind of them to support him. It shows they care for the children and their families to ensure that a child can enjoy their special day.” The generosity of Party Source and Reflections has meant a lot to Diego and his mother who without their help would not have had a party at all. Ms Quintero said, “I am very grateful to get the help from the Party Source because without them
I wouldn’t have been able to give Diego this special day especially being a single parent.” Ms Bodden has also passed her caring and unselfish attitude onto her 11-year-old daughter Erika Bodden. Erika said, “ I work here every school holiday and I really love it. I think its very kind of my family to do this because if I was a young girl and my parents didn’t have any money and someone decided to give me a free party I would be very grateful.” Ms. Gina Connolly, Special Needs teacher with the Early Intervention Programme works with Diego and assisted by bringing cake, pizza and chips to help with the celebration. And as to coming down on our heads, those old warehouses are stronger than you imagine, Miss Lois. Have you never noticed their great beams?” “I have noticed their toppling fronts and their slanting sides, their bulgings out and their leanings in,” replied Miss Lois, nodding her head emphatically. “The leaning tower of Pisa, you know, is pronounced stronger than other towers that stand erect,” said Rast. “That old brown shell of Larrabee’s is jointed together so strongly that I venture to predict it will outlive us all. We might be glad of such joints ourselves, Miss Lois.” “If it will only not come down on our heads to-night, that is all I ask of its joints,” replied Miss Lois. the elder sister, with a distressed expression on her face, but, as usual, not reproving Tita. “It is the little fancy dress the fort ladies made for her last summer when they had tableaux. It is too late to go back now; she must wear it, I suppose; perhaps in the crowd it will not be noticed.” Tita, unmoved, had walked meanwhile over to the hearth, and sitting down on the floor before the fire, was taking off her snowboots and donning her new slippers, apparently unconscious of remark. The scene was a striking one, or would have been such to a stranger. The lower floor of the warehouse had been swept and hastily garnished with evergreens and all the flags the little fort could muster; at each end on a broad hearth a great fire of logs roared up the old chimney, and helped to light the room, a soldier standing guard beside it, and keeping up the flame by throwing on wood every now and then from the heap in the corner near by. Candles were ranged along the walls, and lanterns hung from the beams above; all that the island could do in the way of illumination had been done. The result was a picturesque mingling of light and shade as the dancers came into the ruddy gleam of the fires and passed out again, now seen for a moment in the paler ray of a candle farther down the hall, now lost in the shadows which
everywhere swept across the great brown room from side to side, like broad-winged ghosts resting in midair and looking down upon the revels. The music came from six French fiddlers, four young, gaily dressed fellows, and two grizzled, withered old men, and they played the tunes of the century before, and played them with all their might and main. The little fort, a one- company post, was not entitled to a band; but there were, as usual, one or two German musicians among the enlisted men, and these now stood near the French fiddlers and watched them with slow curiosity, fingering now and then in imagination the great brass instruments which were to them the keys of melody, and dreaming over again the happy days when they, too, played “with the band.” But the six French fiddlers cared nothing for the Germans; they held themselves far above the common soldiers of the fort, and despised alike their cropped hair, their ideas, their uniforms, and the strict rules they were obliged to obey. They fiddled away with their eyes cast up to the dark beams above, and their tunes rang out in that shrill, sustained, clinging treble which no instrument save a violin can give. The entire upper circle of society was present, and a sprinkling of the second; for the young officers cared more for dancing than for etiquette.

The sun is a dynamic fireball with regular 11 year intervals of high and low activity. It is now approaching a solar maximum, a period of high activity; we are in cycle 24 predicted to peak between 2012 and 2013. This year we have already seen some spectacular displays of solar flares and coronal mass ejections which produce streams of highly energetic particles in the solar wind at speeds of up to 600km/ second. These particles can impact the Earth’s magnetosphere and cause radiation damage to satellites and astronauts; on Earth, they produce colourful auroras as they slam into our atmosphere at the north and south poles. In 1859 an amateur astronomer called Richard Carrington, while studying sunspots observed a sudden brightening on the surface of the sun. It appeared to originate from within a sunspot group. Sunspots are twisted knots of intense magnetism generated by the suns inner core. They typically last for a few weeks starting from the equator in pairs, (observed as darker patches on the surface of the sun) before they work their way to the poles where they reverse polarity (usually at solar maximum) before being dragged down to depths of 200,000 km. On the surface of the sun (the photosphere) the energy that is stored from the leftover loops of twisted magnetic fields is suddenly released producing solar flares. A solar flare is a burst of radiation across the electromagnetic spectrum from radio waves to gamma rays, carrying approximately 1 sixth of

GPS, radar, mobile phones etc in our everyday lives. In the case of a strong X type flare spewing out highly energetic particles towards the Earth, the damage to our communications systems via satellites would be incalculable, and astronauts would have only minutes to shield themselves from the radiation. The Earths’ magnetic field and atmosphere gives us some protection. All the world’s an island Innie or outtie Carol-Ann Rudy I’m sure you think I’m talking about belly-buttons. Well, it’s true the remaining evidence of our umbilical cord is commonly referred to as either an innie or an outtie. You may even have a name for yours like “Georgie Girl” or “Brad’s Button”. Until the era of two-piece and bikini bathing suits, a belly-button was not a subject of speculation or conversation. Belly-buttons were even airbrushed out of photos in catalogues for years and years, such was the perception of the delicate nature of the public that we might actually see one in a photo and— what?—be embarassed? We’ve all got one, unless you’re not of this world. Belly-buttons are the last body part to come off the exclusive list called “Private Parts”. However, unlike the other unmentionable body parts remaining on the list, a belly-button has no purpose past the moment of our birth and separation from Mom. Those other parts do, whether in relation to reproduction, elimination, or providing nourishment for one’s offspring. (How’s that for beating around the bush?) It’s unlikely in our lifetime that those other private parts will be off-list and freely available for discussion, comparison, and viewing by one and all, thank goodness. It’s bad enough you might have a “Georgie” or a “Brad” but I wouldn’t want to hear the monikers you might create for the rest of your Private Parts, please! In the meantime, some people have an appreciation for the artistic and practical merits of “the button” as either an attractive or somewhat deformed protrusion on the belly – an outtie – or a lint trap, an innie, possibly rich enough in detritus to grow potatoes. There is another kind of innie and outtie, though; I’m talking about inner and outer dialogue. You know – the internal conversation you have with yourself versus the conversation you carry on with those
Beer Garden around you. Let me tell you about a friend who is unable to contain her inner dialogue, her innie, and instead it becomes an outtie for all to hear whether we want to or not. I’ll call my friend Terry, a nice middleaged single woman employed as a professional in a medical field. I suspect I know why she’s still single. I spent a week with Terry at her place while I made a move from one apartment to another. We were good friends and I expected it would be a fun week. It wasn’t. Whether she was in the kitchen, the bedroom, the hall, or the bathroom, I heard her talking. There was no one else in the apartment, so of course she had to be talking to me. Again and again I responded, walking to her location to hear what she was saying more clearly. Did she need something? “Oh, I’m just talking to myself,” she’d say. Another five or ten minutes and I’d be on my feet again, sure she was talking to me. We’re not talking about an occasional commentary like, “Oh, dear, I’m running out of room to hang my socks.” No, these
were full-blown conversations. “I suppose I could put them on the back of the chair in the dining room but they might leave a white mark. Oh, I know—I could put a towel over the back of the chair first. I think I still have a couple of towels in the closet that aren’t in the laundry. I guess it really won’t matter if it’s a colored towel or not; the color shouldn’t run since they’ve been washed many times. Besides, y’know, the towel might help them dry faster and....” You get the picture. We’re still friends, but that was a lot more than I needed to know. We would do well to listen to children. They frequently express their inner dialogue as an “outtie” like Terry. However, most grow out of it. Children seem enriched by verbalizing their inner dialogue. It may be a reflection of the richness of the dialogue between themselves and their parents. Or not. By the way, I’m an innie—belly and brain— and proud of it. Innies rule!

Lettuce, dressing, and croutons…oh my!

Dody Denman As promised, here is the continuation of our “salad odyssey”. Last column covered the creation of salad dressings. The body of a salad is as varied as the dressings. Most any vegetable or fruit can be added to a salad. A familiar place to start is with the greens. There are several types of lettuce, including looseleaf, romaine, and iceberg. Looseleaf lettuce has mildly flavoured leaves. Romaine is a head-forming type of lettuce with elongated leaves and iceberg is known for its crunchy leaves and mild taste. Don’t stop with the norm… experiment by adding radicchio, arugula, spinach or cabbage. The darker the leaves the more nutrition is found. Although lettuce is mostly made of water, it contains nutrients

such as antioxidants, vitamin C, potassium and fibre. Try making your own mix by tossing several types of lettuce or purchase a spring mix with various greens. After the foundation of greens, add other things like carrots, cucumber, tomatoes, strawberries, nuts, seeds, broccoli, jicama, corn, black beans, artichoke hearts, edamame, sprouts, hearts of palm and an endless variety of cheeses. All of these in your combination make for a wonderful beginning. With the addition of meat, chicken, fish, tofu or other protein you have a complete meal. However, the “icing on the salad” must be the croutons. Just as I prefer fresh salad dressing, the same goes for croutons. Remember; always add croutons just before serving.

1 (15 oz.) can chickpeas, drained and rinsed 2 tsp. olive oil ½ tsp. smoked paprika ½ tsp. cumin ¼ tsp. sea salt ¼ tsp. black pepper Pat chickpeas dry. Combine all ingredients in medium bowl and toss gently to coat. Spread evenly on baking sheet. Bake for 20 minutes at 425 degrees. Stir after ten minutes.

Bread Croutons A very simple way to begin is by cutting day-old bread into ½ inch cubes. Add to bowl and toss with olive oil, salt, garlic powder, and pepper. You can easily substitute olive oil spray and spicy seasoned salt. If you don’t have spicy seasoned salt, add cayenne to seasoned salt and if you don’t have seasoned salt… well, shame on you! Place on baking sheet and bake at 400 degrees for 12-15 minutes.

Chop each half into 9-12 pieces. Place the flour in one bowl, whisked egg in second and seasoned panko in third. Heat olive oil in pan over medium-high heat. Dredge avocado in flour, then egg, and panko, covering completely with breadcrumbs. Cook until golden brown. Place on paper towel lined plate.

The end of the school year is here and savvy moms and dads by now have made all the arrangements for summer. Summer camps and leisurely days at the pool or beach are just a few of the summer rituals for many families. However if you're tempted to let your child play outdoors for even a few minutes without proper sun protection, you might want to think twice. Adolescence and childhood are critical periods during which exposure to UV radiation is more likely to contribute to skin cancer in later life. Children with fair skin, blond or red hair and blue or green eyes are at the highest risk of sunburn. But darker-skinned children also need sun protection. With this in mind, it’s important that parents teach their children how to enjoy fun in the sun safely.
LIMIT OUTDOOR PLAYTIME BETWEEN 10A.M. AND 4P.M.
Apply a thick, even coat to all exposed areas 20 - 30 minutes before your child goes out in the sun. Choose a sunscreen with SPF (Sun Protection Factor) 15 or higher. Make sure it's labeled "broad spectrum," which means it blocks both UVA and UVB sunlight. For your little ones, sunscreen that contains zinc oxide or titanium dioxide should be selected as these compounds are less irritating than others. Sunscreen sticks are best for the face because they are sweat proof and less likely to drip. Don't forget nose, ears, hands, feet, shoulders, and behind the neck; lips can also burn, so apply a lip balm with SPF protection. Reapply sunscreen every 2 to 3 hours, or after sweating or swimming.
COVER FROM HEAD TO TOE. Wearing protective clothing and hats is one of the primary ways of warding off UV damage. When wet, light coloured clothing transmits just as much sunlight as bare skin. Keep your kids covered with dark colours, long sleeves, and pants whenever possible. And don't forget the accessories: sunglasses with UV protection to guard against burned corneas, and hats to prevent sunburned scalps and faces. Protective clothing, hats with wide brims, and sunglasses are just as important for babies. At the beach, bring along a large umbrella.
Parents, you are the best teacher by practicing sun safety yourself. If your child sees you following sun safety rules, he'll take them for granted and follow suit. Teach every member of the family how to protect their skin and eyes. With proper supervision, children can learn to protect themselves and enjoy summer fun without sacrificing the health of their skin.
Avoid unnecessary exposure when the sun's rays are at their strongest. Even on cloudy or cooler days, ultraviolet (UV) rays remain strong. Shady spots can be just as tricky because of reflected light. If your child is playing outdoors during these hours, make sure to apply ample sunscreen.
WATCH OUT FOR MEDICATIONS. Some medications increase the skin's sensitivity to the sun, so make sure to ask your doctor whether your child may be at risk. Prescription antibiotics and acne medications are the most notorious culprits, but when in doubt, ask.

Newcastle midfielder Joey Barton has been “inundated” with interest from Premier League and top European clubs, according to his agent Willie McKay.
Despite having one year left on his contract, the 28-yearold has been told he can leave St James’ Park for free. “We have been inundated with interest,” McKay told BBC Radio 5 live. Barton revealed on Tuesday that he was prevented from training with his team-mates, tweeting: “Made to train alone, how predictable.” Relations between Barton and the club have been strained after contract negotiations broke down in the summer, leading to the midfielder venting his frustrations on Twitter. McKay, who received a call from Newcastle managing director Derek Llambias on Sunday night saying Barton could leave the club, said he was surprised by the decision. The agent said: “I’ve got nothing against [Newcastle owner] Mike Ashley and Derek Llambias and the guys that run the club. They can do what they want but I think it’s suicide what they’ve done. “I’ve probably got the easiest job of any agent in the transfer window.” Despite Arsenal and Tottenham emerging as the early front-runners to sign Barton, McKay revealed that his player was disappointed when talks to remain at St James’ Park broke down. “Joey was disappointed. AKRON, Ohio (AP) — Tiger Woods is back on a PGA Tour golf course for the first time in nearly three months after an injury layoff. Woods returns this week at the Bridgestone Invitational, and he wasted little time on Tuesday at Firestone. He was on the practice range just as the sun was starting to rise, playing nine holes accompanied by swing coach Sean Foley. “I don’t feel a thing,” Woods said when asked about his knee following a nine-hole practice session today. “It feels solid, stable, no pain. That’s one of the reasons I took as long as I did to come back.” On the bag is Bryon Bell, his childhood friend. Woods announced two weeks ago that he had fired Steve Williams, his caddie of 12 years. Woods last played on May 12 when he withdrew from The Players Championship after nine holes because of recurring injuries to his left leg. He vowed not to return until he was fully healthy, and he walked without a limp during practice. Meanwhile Charles Barkley, basketball Hall of Famer, has revealed how Woods is “like a brother” to him, but he is “very concerned” about the star golfer. Barkley said: “One of the keys to being successful is surrounding yourself with people who are always going to be honest.“

Moss spent 13 seasons doing things on his own terms, which is why perhaps the loudest career the NFL has ever seen — both in terms of the roars he induced on the field and the aggravation he caused off it — ended so quietly on Monday. No farewell speech from maybe the most physically gifted receiver to don a helmet. No tearful goodbye from a record-setting performer who changed the way defense is played in the NFL. Just a onesentence statement from his
agent saying one of the most colourful careers in league history was over. “Randy has weighed his options and considered the offers and has decided to retire,” Joel Segal said on Monday. It was vintage Moss, a revolutionary talent who was never very much interested in doing things the conventional way. Fans were awed by his once-in-ageneration blend of size, speed and intelligence. Teammates were charmed by the charisma he showed behind closed doors and coaches were often infuriated by his boorish antics and lack of respect for authority. If this indeed is the end for Moss, he leaves the game with some of the gaudiest statistics posted by a receiver.
