The George Town dump could explode if authorities start a wasteto-energy scheme at the site, which, in any case, is unlikely to provide enough raw material to process efficiently. At the same time, Dart Realty has promised an imminent announcement of a Bodden Town public meeting, addressing local concerns, while distributing a flyer purporting to answer residents’ fears. “A time and date for a public meeting for the people of Bodden Town will be announced very shortly,” Dart told iNews Cayman yesterday as part of a larger statement. The flyer was rejected, however, by the Coalition to Keep Bodden Town Dump Free, leading local opposition to relocating the George Town landfill to a nearby “wastemanagement facility”. Farewell to Deputy Governor

(L-R) Hon. Premier McKeeva Bush, OBE, JP; retiree Mr. Donovan Ebanks, MBE; new Deputy Governor Franz Manderson, MBE and His Excellency the Governor, Mr. Duncan Taylor, CBE.

Hon. Premier McKeeva Bush, OBE, JP congratulates former Deputy Governor Mr. Donovan Ebanks, MBE.

CAYMAN ISLANDS (GIS) – The career of Mr. Donovan “Donnie” Ebanks, MBE – the consummate public servant, Cayman’s first Deputy Governor, and a respected arbiter across official and political lines of government – was lauded at his retirement reception at Government House. Senior officers, colleagues, relatives and friends celebrated his 36 years’ service with gifts, good words and fond memories. They spoke of the many milestones reached as well as the challenges overcome – from budgets to hurricanes. “Not bad for a North Side boy who didn’t wear shoes to school until I was 12, and whose family didn’t have electricity until I was in university,” Mr. Ebanks told the gathering. While paying heartfelt

tribute to the camaraderie of those who assisted and worked alongside him, he said, “However, it’s not about what I accomplished, it’s all about the shared effort.” After first spending 19 “extremely enjoyable” years with the Public Works Department, the engineer became a leading civil servant. As Deputy Chief Secretary he oversaw Cayman’s protective services, including heading the National Hurricane Committee, and he finished his career as the most senior civil servant in these Islands. The son of a politician (the late MLA Mr. Craddock Ebanks), Mr. Ebanks said he understood the two sides of the coin. He was also renowned for being frugal. “I felt it appropriate to spend government’s money as if it was my own,” he explained.

His Excellency the Governor, Mr. Duncan Taylor, CBE, wished Mr. Ebanks “Godspeed and a happy retirement”, and expressed gratitude for his support saying, “You have fulfilled your role very well.” His parting gift was the first flag to fly over the new Government Administration Building. Many other accolades from officials and friends followed. “The calling to public service, properly performed, is a high calling,” said the Hon. Premier McKeeva Bush, OBE, JP. Noting that there have been tremendous changes since Mr. Ebanks’ career began in 1975, the Premier added, “There is a lot we have done right, and the best homage to Donnie would be to maintain such high standards.” New Deputy Governor Franz Manderson, MBE presented Mr. Ebanks with a Caymanite catboat on behalf of his staff, and wished him ‘smooth sailing’. Mr. Manderson thanked Mr Ebanks for his leadership and noted that a fond memory of Mr. Ebanks will be his unique ability to explain a very complicated matter by using a witty analogy.” And, “Mr. Donnie’s” parting advice to the civil service: “Put country before self, work hard, and you will be eventually rewarded.”

“I am not a cancer patient but I have been attending the Cancer Society’s Survivor Dinners over the years with my wife. I appreciate how the Cayman Islands Cancer Society’s staff care for my wife who is a cancer survivor. I have a lot of respect for those people because they treat everyone with respect. They truly care for cancer patients. I pray that the Lord will give them His blessings and the strength to carry on the good work that they are doing. I am happy to be around them as they are a friendly and loving group of people.” ~ Turner Myles 114 Maple Road George Town P.O. Box 10565 Grand Cayman KY1-1005 Cayman Islands

Six organ transplant

FRIDAY, FEB. 10TH, 2012 MARRIOTT BALLROOM

HOLLIS, Maine (AP) — A nineyear-old Maine girl is home after undergoing a transplant of six organs to remove a tumor that was spreading throughout her abdomen. Doctors at Children’s Hospital Boston replaced Alannah Shevenell’s (SHEV’-uh-nehl) stomach, liver, spleen, small intestine, pancreas and a portion of her esophagus in October. It’s believed to be the first-ever transplant of an esophagus and the largest number of organs transplanted at one time in New England. The surgery was necessary to remove a massive and rare cancerous tumor that was overtaking her organs and closing in on her heart. The spunky, bright-eyed girl returned Wednesday to her home in Hollis and is enjoying sledding and her scrapbooks.

Dart response is feeble say protestors

Minister Mark Scotland

Tad Stoner tad.stoner@ieyenews.com

Continued from front page Calling it a “feeble attempt to respond to the coalition’s concerns,” Alain Beiner, a leader of the 75-member group, pointed not only to the Dart brochure, but also to yesterday’s radio appearance by Health and Environment Minister Mark Scotland as spurring “growing support among Bodden Towners to the latest misinformation put out by Minister Scotland, and contained in the recently issued, full-colour flyer, and to the unlimited resources of the Dart/government PR machine. Speaking on Rooster radio’s earlymorning “Crosstalk”, Mr Scotland and Walling Whittaker, appointed by Dart Realty as environmental and wastemanagement consultant, agreed that converting refuse to energy, originally planned for the George Town landfill, was planned neither for the current site nor the proposed 110-acre facility at Midland Acres. “It’s a myth that we will be able to do waste-to-energy,” Mr Scotland said, citing the low caloric value and high moisture content of 40 years of landfill waste. Creating electricity and clean water by burning waste was expensive, inefficient and, while part of master planning for Midland Acres, not contemplated for the near future. “Mining 3,000 tons of waste to get 300 tons for an incinerator is not to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

worth it”, nor were projected supplies large enough to justify the expense, he told the audience, saying no burning would take place in Bodden Town. Mr Whittaker asked the audience to “imagine a dead cow. It’s been dead for 10 months. It’s decomposing, and now you want to open it up. It’s very risky and it’s very dangerous and not widely practiced. Cost is one of the issues, but you have to think about explosions and other hazards” including public health, created by the release of toxic gas and other materials. While neither discussed the details of the Bodden Town facility, both said it would focus on aggregating recyclable material to be shipped overseas for processing. In response to a series of iNews Cayman questions, Dart Realty yesterday underscored the Bodden Town facility was not “a dump”, but a “waste-management” operation and listed discussions with half-a-dozen government and private agencies. “Meetings have occurred with the Department of Environmental Health (DEH), Department of Environment, Central Planning Authority, Water Authority Cayman and the National Roads Authority (NRA)” the statement said, also naming the Caribbean Utilities Company and the National Trust. “Various requested studies will be carried out and final specifications on items such as road access and on-site

management will be made,” Dart said, promising “these processes will be subject to all of the legal and regulatory requirements. Comments and suggestions are being reviewed and once this review process is complete public meetings will be scheduled” Referring to earlier proposals by Mr Scotland to reroute dump-truck traffic around central Bodden Town, Dart said upgrades to the Anton Bodden Drive alternative were part of government plans, but did not say when work might begin. “The Anton Bodden Road [sic], also known as the Belford Estates Bypass, will be upgraded as has always been planned by the NRA,” the statement said. “This road was built specifically to route heavy vehicles away from central Bodden Town. The DEH has confirmed that the number of heavy vehicles which visit the existing landfill on a regular basis is, in fact, very low -- far less than 200 a day -- with the majority of the vehicles being small, private vehicles.” Calling the remarks “entirely false”, Mr Beiner said he was “among the many concerned about the dangers of the proposed dump to the health and well-being of district residents, and to their environment,” while worried about “material damage and depressed real estate values as a result of forcing the dump on Bodden Town.”

Mario becomes new director of Labour & Pensions The Ministry of Education Training and Employment has taken an important step forward to realise its vision for a new Department of Labour and Pensions, with the recent appointment of Mr. Mario Ebanks to the post of Director of the new agency. Mr. Ebanks who has a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) from the University of Miami and Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Tennessee, (as a Bank of America and Deloitte scholar respectively), comes with years of managerial, human resources and consultancy experience from both the public and private sector. He has held esteemed positions such as youngest Chamber of Commerce Manager in the region, youngest Country Manager within Esso Caribbean and Central America and in more recent times has been Senior Consultant and Managing Director of his own company: Premier HR Management Solutions. Minister for Employment, Hon. Rolston Anglin, JP, is delighted to have Mr. Ebanks join the team and had this to say, “Mr. Ebanks will be

iWorld

bringing with him a unique skill set and wealth of experience which, I am fully confident, will enable him to transition this organization into the effective, successful entity that this vital area of service delivery requires.” The Ministry has been working diligently on remedies to what Minister Anglin calls the long-standing “failures and inefficiencies” of the current structure and services for labourrelated functions. Through various studies and assessments of the current situation, it was determined that a restructuring of the Department of Employment Relations and the National Pensions Office was the best way to achieve a more effective and efficient one-stop shop for all labour- related services. This will allow for a system of proactive workplace inspections, which will promote compliance with both Labour and Pension legislation, while at the same time causing good employers minimum inconvenience. Therefore the new Department of Labour and Pensions will maximise resources and achieve

much needed efficiencies, including but not limited to, fostering improved stakeholder relationships, leveraging technology, and delivering timely and consistent solutions. Chief Officer for Employment Mrs. Mary Rodrigues said, “I am extremely pleased to welcome Mr. Ebanks to the overall Ministry team. The timing of his appointment means that, over the next few weeks, he will be able to play an important role in the transition arrangements, helping to prepare his new team to deliver the new department’s mission and vision, and for their move to new premises.” She advised that the new Department has been reorganised within existing budgetary allocations for the

ministry. A recruitment process will commence shortly for a Deputy Post, to oversee the labour functions of the department. A major revision of the National Pensions Law is also nearing completion. In commenting on his appointment, Mr Ebanks stated, “I am delighted to be the new Director of Labour & Pensions, and look forward to the challenges it will bring along with the rewards. I have always been very passionate about these subjects, including during my previous service with the C.I. Government when I was closely involved with assisting Labour Law reform, and also played a pivotal role in the development and eventual passage of the national Pensions Law and Regulations. Labour and pensions are such critical services to our community and I look forward to working with my new team and the Ministry to improving these services. I also look forward to working closely with various professional and trade associations throughout our economy, and with fellow HR professionals, in a partnership to effect transformative strategies which enhances workplace productivity, safety, and tranquillity.”

Red alert as big freeze grips Britain Paul Kennedy paul.kennedy@ieyenews.com

HEALTH officials in the United Kingdom were on standby last night to take action as snow and a killer winter blast hits Britain The bitterly cold weather will see temperatures plunge to -12C (10F) today while tomorrow will bring up to four inches of snow. The Government is preparing to issue a severe Level 4 cold alert because of the risk to life. Prime minister David Cameron could call a meeting of the Cobra national emergency committee to handle the crisis. It would be able to draft in the Army help clear snow and ice and prevent travel chaos. A Department of Health

spokesman: “Level 4 is reached when winter weather is so severe, prolonged or widespread that its effects are likely to extend outside health and social care, such as when it creates widespread transport disruption and/or where the operation of health and social care services is threatened. “A Level 4 alert indicates exceptional winter weather is affecting one or several parts of the country.” The spokesman added: “During this period of cold weather we would advise people to check local weather forecasts for the latest information on weather conditions and staying safe when outdoors. “A Level 4 alert means severe weather conditions affecting one

or several parts of the country over a prolonged period of time - much longer than six days. “It would only be called following detailed discussions between the Met Office, Cabinet Office, the Department of Health and several other government departments. We are not at that stage.” Freezing winds from Russia will make temperatures struggle to get above zero during the day today and bring widespread frost and ice overnight. Kent, the Midlands, the South-east and London are all in the firing line tomorrow for the first heavy snowfall this winter, with the entire country at risk of some snow. Met Office forecaster Helen Chivers said: “We are looking at

a weather front from the Atlantic bringing a mixture of rain, sleet and snow. “It is moist colder air that is likely to fall as snow with the areas most at risk the Midlands, Southeast and London. “We could see temperatures as low as -12C over the snow-covered areas which are the lowest we have seen so far this winter.” Temperatures are set to sink lower than the South Pole with the whole country at risk of ice, severe frosts and days of treacherous road conditions. A Met Office statement warned a “100 per cent probability of severe cold weather” could increase the health risks to vulnerable patients and disrupt health services. to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

Ezzard wants funding for London trip

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office in London

Tad Stoner tad.stoner@ieyenews.com

North Side’s Ezzard Miller is calling for approximately CI$15,000 in donations to fund a late-February trip to London to question policymakers about the Cayman Islands. Accompanied by at least two others, Mr Miller hopes to gain sufficient funding to spend four days meeting the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, the Foreign Affairs Committee, the All-Party Parliamentary Group for the Cayman Islands and Minister Responsible for Overseas Territories Henry Bellingham. “I have appealed to the public for contributions,” said Mr Miller, independent MLA for the eastern district. An outspoken critic of Premier McKeeva Bush, Mr Miller said he hoped to discuss a handful of topics. “I’d like to ask about the Framework for Fiscal Responsibility,” he said, referring to the late-November UKCayman agreement pledging full accounting for borrowing, spending and various local infrastructure projects. “I wonder if it has been effective or not. “I would also like to ask about the CHEC deal,” he said, alluding to government’s imminent agreement with the China Harbour Engineering Company for the $300 million construction of cruise-ship berthing in George Town, a Spotts Landing to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

alternative and a pier at the Cayman Turtle Farm. Mr Miller also hoped to discuss the Dart Realty-government ForCayman Investment Alliance (FCIA) and, finally, he said, “the ongoing investigation into the premier,” a reference to a police-led probe of alleged “financial irregularities” between Mr Bush and Atlanta-based real-estate developer Stan Thomas. Accompanying him to the British capital, Mr Miller said, will be Alice Mae Coe, head of West Bay’s Concerned Citizens group, and Arden McLean, PPM MLA for East End. He hoped PPM leader Alden McLaughlin would join the group. Mr Miller has supported the three in opposition to Mr Bush and various FCIA projects including closure of 3,700 feet of West Bay Road and creation of a waste-management facility in Bodden Town. ”I am a little concerned with Dart, that they can so readily donate money to government and can decide what projects they are donating for. “It may,” he said, “violate section 15 of the Anti-Corruption Law.” He also worried that Dart say they are giving $20 million for education and social projects, but “giving money to the same decision-makers who are negotiating the [FCIA] deal.” “I kind of wonder where we’re heading,” Mr Miller said. He indicated he had not written

the funding appeal that appeared on Thursday on the iNews Cayman website, calling the public to “offer to help pay expenses,” for Mr Miller, Ms Coe and Mr McLean, “since they are travelling on the people’s behalf. “Some of you local businesses that are suffering because of Dart running you out of business,” the writer said, should take “the opportunity to show some support. It is our duty to assist them and help provide enough funds to cover traveling expenses for them to go to the UK, representing the people of the Cayman Islands.” Mr Miller said the funds would cover airfare, accommodation, food, spending needs and transport “because we won’t exactly be visiting dignitaries”. “We plan to leave on a Saturday, spend Sunday acclimatising, then get appointments on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, then come home the next day,” he said, acknowledging it could be delayed until early March “because we don’t know when we are having Parliament,” suggesting Mr Bush had manipulated Legislative Assembly schedules to prevent such trips. “It means you can’t plan your life,” he lamented. Mr Miller vowed to carry on even without public funding. “We’ll have to do what we normally do,” he said, “which is fund it ourselves. I am pretty confident, though, there will be enough people who want this trip.”

Roseanne Barr seeks Green Party presidential nod WASHINGTON (AP) — Roseanne Barr said Thursday she’s running for the Green Party’s presidential nomination — and it’s no joke. The actress-comedian said in a statement that she’s a longtime supporter of the party and looks forward to working with people who share her values. She said the two major parties aren’t serving the American people. “The Democrats and Republicans have proven that they are servants -bought and paid for by the 1 percent -- who are not doing what’s in the best interest of the American people,” Barr said. Occupy Wall Street protesters

popularized the “We are the 99 percent” slogan in their fight against economic disparity and perceived corporate greed. Barr has submitted paperwork to the Green Party for her candidacy. The party’s presidential nominee will be selected at a convention in Baltimore in July. Barr said she has been fighting for working-class families and women for decades. “I will barnstorm American living rooms,” she said in a candidate questionnaire submitted to the Green Party. “Mainstream media will be unable to ignore me, but more importantly they will be unable

to overlook the needs of average Americans in the run-up to the 2012 election.” Barr’s hit TV sitcom “Roseanne” aired from 1988 to 1997 and earned her an Emmy and a Golden Globe.

Khmer Rouge chief jailer gets life in prison PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (AP) — A U.N.-backed tribunal’s Supreme Court lengthened the sentence for the Khmer Rouge’s chief jailer to life imprisonment on Friday because of his “shocking and heinous” crimes against the Cambodian people. The surprise ruling increased a lower court’s 19-year sentence for Kaing Guek Eav, known as Duch. Prosecutors had appealed the sentence as too lenient, and outraged survivors had feared the man who oversaw the torture and killing of thousands could one day walk free. Duch was the first defendant to

be tried by the tribunal. He was commander of Phnom Penh’s topsecret Tuol Sleng prison, code-named S-21. He admitted to overseeing the torture of his prisoners before sending them for execution at the “killing fields.” In July 2010, the tribunal’s lower court convicted Duch (pronounced DOIK) of war crimes, crimes against humanity, torture and murder. He was sentenced to 35 years in prison but had 16 years shaved off for time served and other technicalities. The sentence was appealed both by prosecutors, who called for life

imprisonment, and by Duch, who argued it was too harsh because he was merely following orders. Judge Kong Srim, president of the Supreme Court Chamber, said Friday that the upper court felt the penalty should be more severe because the former jailer was responsible for the brutal deaths of so many.

Obama plans push for veterans jobs programmes WASHINGTON (AP) — In an effort to cut the unemployment rate among veterans, the Obama administration is calling for a new conservation program that would put veterans to work rebuilding trails, roads and levees on public lands. The administration also will seek more grant money for programs that allow local communities to hire more police officers and firefighters. The efforts are particularly geared to those veterans who served after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, a group experiencing an unemployment rate of 13.1 percent versus 8.1 percent for non-veterans. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

said the Civilian Conservation Corps that operated during the 1930s could be viewed as a model for what the administration will try to accomplish through its “Veterans Jobs Corps.” He said that the administration will propose spending $1 billion that would be used to put an estimated 20,000 veterans to work restoring habitat and eradicating invasive species, among other activities. “When one looks back at the legacy of the Civilian Conservation Corps, we take great comfort that those who take on these kinds of activities will leave a lasting legacy for the United States,” Salazar said. The backdrop of presidential politics

is also playing a role in the Obama administration’s new efforts. Several states that will be heavily contested in November have a significant military presence. Veterans will be evaluating specific ways the next White House administration intends to help them.

OPINION

The Editor Speaks Frankenstein mosquitoes and transparency

Colin Wilson

There has been much publicity in the world wide colin.wilson@ieyenews.com press regarding the release of genetically modified (GM) mosquitoes here in the Cayman Islands by the UK firm Oxitec. On Grand Cayman, where we have the Aedes aegypti, a mosquito that carries and transmits the dengue fever virus (although cases reported here are rare). For every natural male, 10 modified male mosquitoes were released, or a total of three million GM mosquitoes. As a result, a wild female is more likely to mate with a modified male, thereby producing selfdestructing offspring. In just four months, the entire mosquito population in the test area was reduced by 80%. Excellent? Yes. But ……….. The GM release here was done with the majority of us living here kept in the dark. Why? The authorities here knew and gave the go ahead. But these GM (referred to as Frankenstein bugs) mosquitoes have mated with the female ones and these female ones can and do bite us! We have seen too many horrific movies about mutant bugs being let loose on unsuspecting humans in remote islands by evil biotech firms concerned with making huge profits from the experiment. They don’t care for the humans being exposed to these Frankenstein bugs they just want to see what happens. I have a horrible feeling that this is why we were all kept in the dark. There would have been an instant cry of “No” because we are not educated enough to understand that the risk is zero. The news of the experiment that took place was not released to the general public until a year after it had happened. The key question is about what scientists may and may not do. Can they simply release flying, humanbiting laboratory-made creatures into the air? And who controls such activity if this is undertaken for a firm that seeks to profit from it? Oxitec already holds the monopoly on GM insects. Companies like them don’t like divulging their plans,

preferring to keep their technology under wraps, particularly when it comes to potential dangers. As Reafael von Bredow in an article on the subject published in SPIEGEL ONLINE says, “the work of biotech companies must necessarily be the exact opposite of what scientific research ought to be: transparent. That’s the crux of the matter.” Guy Reeves, a researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology in Plön, northern Germany, said in the renowned scientific journal ‘PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases’: “The Grand Cayman experiment wasn’t an exception; a mere oversight by muddle-headed scientists that somehow forgot to inform the local population adequately on their way from the lab to the field. Whatever happened in the Caymans is quite likely to be used as a model for releases in your community, wherever you live in the world.” Whilst I have no doubt we were at minimum risk and the experiment will probably result in dengue fever being brought under control, Luke Alphey, a genetic engineer, who dreamed up the idea of the novel insects while he was at Oxford, admits his technique isn’t perfect yet, and GM females may therefore also be released accidentally. And we have to take him at his word that the larva-killing protein definitely can’t be injected into the human blood stream. Unfortunately, like so much else, he can offer not peer-reviewed scientific proof. Alphey claimed that he spoke to people on Grand Cayman (he doesn’t say how many and whom) telling them what he was doing and the “Islanders didn’t even ask me about it. It’s not really for us to tell them what their concerns should be.” Wow. What an attitude and a complete lack of openness. As Guy Reeves summed up, “One has to answer these fundamental questions that most people will have before releasing the animals.” I am sure, like you, I do not want to be used as a guinea pig, without being informed first. I most certainly don’t want to end up as a subject in a movie on the Scifi Channel.

Filipino troops still search for terrorist MANILA, Philippines (AP) — The remains of a top leader of the regional Jemaah Islamiyah terror network have not been found, the Philippine military said Friday, a day after announcing that he had been killed in a U.S.-backed airstrike. Troops on the ground were still combing the jungle camp that was hit Thursday for the body of Malaysian Zulkifli bin Hir, also known as Marwan, said regional military spokesman Lt. Col. Randolph Cabangbang. Military officials said at least 15 people were killed in the dawn strike on a militant camp on remote southern Jolo Island, including two other highlevel leaders. A military spokesman in Manila, Col. Marcelo Burgos, initially reported that Marwan was among them. Marwan’s death would mark a major success in disrupting a militant network blamed for some of the most spectacular bombing attacks in Southeast Asia in recent years. But if the initial report proves incorrect, it would turn a largely successful strike into at least a partial embarrassment for the Philippine military, while burnishing the reputation of the elusive terrorist. The U.S. has offered a $5 million reward for the capture of Marwan, a U.S.-trained engineer accused of involvement in deadly bombings in the Philippines and in training militants. Cabangbang, who is based in southern Zamboanga city, from where the bomber planes in Thursday’s strike took off, said that the military’s announcement of Marwan’s killing was based on information provided by informants. He refused to elaborate, saying it would compromise their intelligence assets. “We are still searching. Our troops are still there,” Cabangbang said. He suggested that the blast could have obliterated Marwan’s body, saying the process of verification linked to the possible disbursement of the reward money to informants will be “more tedious” and could include DNA testing. Two Philippine security officials with knowledge of the airstrike who spoke to The Associated Press also said Marwan’s body was not found, though bombs shattered the house where he was believed to have been. One of the officials confirmed the

deaths of the other two other high-level leaders: Umbra Jumdail, who led the Philippine-based Abu Sayyaf militant group, and a Singaporean leader in Jemaah Islamiyah, Abdullah Ali, who used the guerrilla name Muawiyah. The other official confirmed only the death of Jumdail, also known as Dr. Abu Pula, and his son. Both officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to reporters. Cabangbang said the decision to announce the killings, including that of Marwan, was made by the chief of staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, Gen. Jessie Dellosa, after he was briefed by commanders. “There are details that we cannot divulge because of operational security,” he said when pressed for details. A U.S. official in Washington confirmed the strike on Jolo Island, an impoverished region 600 miles (950 km) south of Manila, and said the Pentagon provided assistance in one of the region’s most successful anti-terror operations in years. The strike debilitated a regional militant network that has relied on the restive southern Philippines — sometimes called Southeast Asia’s Afghanistan — as a headquarters for planning bombings and a base for training and recruitment. About 30 militants were at the camp near Parang town on Jolo, the stronghold of the Abu Sayyaf and their allies from the mostly Indonesianbased Jemaah Islamiyah, when it was bombarded by two OV10 aircraft dropping 500lb (227-kg) bombs at 3am, regional military commander Maj. Gen. Noel Coballes said. “Our report is there were at least 15 killed, including their three leadership,”

he said. “This is a deliberate, fully planned attack coming from our forces.” The rest of the militants escaped and no one was captured, Coballes said. American counterterrorism troops have helped ill-equipped Filipino troops track Marwan for years using satellite and drone surveillance. About 600 U.S. special forces troops have been deployed in the southern Philippines since 2002, providing crucial support for the Philippines’ counterterrorism operations. U.S.-backed Philippine offensives have been credited for the capture and killing of hundreds of Abu Sayyaf fighters and most top leaders since the 1990s. In Washington, a U.S. official, speaking to the AP on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak on the record about the operation, confirmed the Pentagon had aided the strike. He was not specific about the contribution and did not know how many people had been killed in the operation. Marwan’s death would represent the most important success against Jemaah Islamiyah since the January 2011 arrest of Indonesian suspect Umar Patek in Pakistan’s garrison town of Abbottabad, where Osama bin Laden was killed in a U.S. commando attack four months later. Patek and Marwan allegedly collaborated with the Abu Sayyaf in training militants in bomb-making skills, seeking funding locally and abroad and plotting attacks, including against American troops in the southern Philippines. Patek is believed to have returned to Indonesia then gone to Pakistan, leaving Marwan to take charge in the southern Philippines, military officials say. to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

Close up magic tricks Georgina Wilcox

georgina.wilcox@ieyenews.com

Trick 1: The disappearing beaker Show the audience a tray with a small beaker on it. Cover the beaker with a napkin, take hold of the beaker and remove the tray. Suddenly, throw the napkin into the air and the beaker has vanished. The preparation Take a small wooden tray and glue a small plastic beaker to the centre of the tray. Next take a cloth napkin or a handkerchief and sew a small circle of cardboard (the same size as the top of the plastic beaker) into the centre of the napkin/handkerchief. The secret Show the beaker in the centre of the tray, them cover it with the napkin so the cardboard circle is over the top of the beaker. As you lift the napkin, hold the cardboard disc in the napkin so that it looks as if you’re holding the rim of the beaker. As you remove the napkin turn the tray with the beaker away from the audience and stand it against something behind your table. Everyone will think that you still have the beaker in your hand. But when you throw the napkin in the air and catch it, they will know that it has vanished. Trick 2: Beaker through the table A small beaker is wrapped in a sheet of newspaper and then disappears only to reappear under the table. The Preparation Gather together a small beaker, a small object that will fit under the beaker and a sheet of newspaper. The piece of newspaper must be larger than the beaker so that it can be completely covered with extra to spare. The Secret Place the small object on the edge of the table. Place the beaker upside down over the object and finally wrap the newspaper around the beaker. Ask the audience what is under the cup. This will lead them to believe you are about to make the object disappear. Lift the paper and the beaker to show the audience that the object is still on the table. As you lift the beaker, move it slowly towards you until it is just clear of the table. Let the beaker discreetly

18

slip from the newspaper and land on your lap. The audience must not see this. The newspaper should hold its shape so that your spectators assume the beaker is still in your hand. Replace the paper over the object (still maintaining the shape of the beaker). Say the magic words and say the object will disappear. Lift the “beaker” and look puzzled that the object hasn’t vanished. Pick up the object and replace the “beaker”. Tell your audience that you can’t make the object disappear, so you’ll have to try the beaker instead and promptly smash your hand containing the newspaper onto the surface of the table. The newspaper will squash flat and the audience will gasp. You claim the beaker has passed through the table and prove it by bringing it out from your lap under the table. Trick 3: King and Queens Take an ordinary pack of playing cards, and pass it to a member of the audience. Ask them to look through the pack, remove the four kings, the four queens and lay them on the table face upward. Arrange the cards in four pairs, king of clubs with queen of clubs etc and so on; put these four pairs on top of each other to form a packet of 8 cards that is left face down on the table. Ask several people to cut the cards (but not to shuffle them) to give the impression that the cards are mixed. Say your touch is so finely tuned you

can separate the kings and queens just by feel. Put the 8 cards behind your back and moments later display the four kings in one hand and four queens in the other. You claim you can reunite the four pairs of cards, again using sense of touch. Pick up the four queens, place them on top of the four kings and leave the cards face down on the table. As before get a number of people to cut (but not shuffle) the cards. Pick up the cards and put them behind your back. Seconds later produce the cards from behind your back two at a time and lay them face down on the table. When they are turned over, all four pairs have been correctly matched. The Secret Part One: When you put the cards behind your back for the first time, take every second card with one hand and the rest with the other. Or, to put it another way, one hand should take cards 1, 3, 5 and 7, while the other hand takes cards 2, 4, 6 and 8. Due to the way that the cards were ordered before you picked them up, this will always separate the kings and queens. Part Two: When you put the cards face down for the audience to cut before you put the cards behind your back for the second time, the audience should think that you arrange them in a face down pile at random. Make sure both the queens and the kings are in the same suit order. For example spades, hearts, clubs, diamonds because it goes black, red, black, red. Once you’ve picked up the first two queens, the next two will be even easier to put in order. Collect the kings in the same order; spades, hearts, clubs, diamonds. Make sure you collect the cards together so it looks as though you’re tidying up the cards from the way they were left at the end of the first part of the trick. Once you’ve done that, turn the 8 cards face down and get the audience to cut it several times. When you have them behind your back, take the top four cards in one hand and the other four cards in your other hand. Produce the cards in pairs taking the top card from each hand, until all four pairs are on the table. Ask a member of the audience to reveal each of the matching pairs in turn. to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

Valentines Day lingerie Georgina Wilcox

georgina.wilcox@ieyenews.com

Valentines Day gifts should be intimate and special tokens of love. Lingerie is a perfect gift for Valentine’s Day. Lingerie makes the recipient feel special and brings pleasure to the gift giver as well. Sexy lingerie doesn’t necessarily mean skimpy thongs and barely there bras! A woman looks and feels her most sexy in flattering underwear which feels good against her skin, enhances her figure and is clearly high quality. Sensual and chic underwear that can be worn everyday, whether for a romantic meal out or to make her smile at work is a far more thoughtful present than a black feather trimmed baby-doll which will be worn once and then be buried at the back of a cupboard. If you want to make the best of both worlds and buy sexy Valentines lingerie that will also become an everyday favourite why not try a set of beautiful deep red Leavers lace lingerie and add a sexy pair of garters to your order. Fiery red and black coloured lace lingerie will set your partner’s heart beating and if you include matching suspenders and garters he will be at your mercy. The traditional colours for Valentines lingerie are red the colour of lust and passion, (Ilisha, Sara, Samantha, Grace, Fiesta and Greta which was inspired by the fiery passion of the Flamenco itself), white with it’s pure and innocent appeal Rebecca, Marianne, Rowena, Natalie and pink the traditionally feminine colour. Dishin’ with Dody Here’s to a “super” weekend!

Dody Denman dody.denman@ieyenews.com

It’s the time of the year that the world has long awaited! Everyone is so excited…well at least everyone in the states. Actually, the truth is, there are a few people in New York and New England that are looking forward to the… wait for it…SUPER BOWL XLVI. Only kidding, of course, the super

of football games is a thrill for millions of people. Personally, I lost interest in football when the Houston Oilers left for Tennessee. There was a time that I loved watching football, loved the Oilers, loved Dan Pastorini and loved Earl Campbell. I created T’s for my family stating, “I’m a Dan good Earler!”

My eldest, Jeff and I would sit on the floor in front of a 9” television, cheering our team. Problem was as the TV warmed, the picture would shrink horizontally. So, at the pinnacle of the game we would be looking at a field that was 9” wide, but only 1” high. This dampened neither our enthusiasm or excitement. If you have a favourite in this

year’s game, I hope they win. Yes, there will be a Super Bowl party, but my interest lies in the people and the food. A new dish I created would work well for a few or a group. I made butternut squash ravioli and although simple, it is time consuming, but can be made in advance and frozen. Then again, you don’t want to be stuck in the kitchen during the game.

Butternut squash ravioli with brown butter sage sauce INGREDIENTS

DIRECTIONS

• 1 butternut squash 1. Heat oven to 350 degrees. Cut • 1/2 medium onion, chopped squash in half and remove • 2 cloves garlic, chopped seeds. Place cut side up on • 1 cup ricotta baking sheet. Brush with oil, • Wonton wrappers add salt and pepper. • Sea salt 2. Bake for 45 minutes or until • Freshly ground black pepper soft. Cool slightly, remove pulp • Pinch of nutmeg and mash until smooth. Set • 2 Tbls. olive oil, plus more for squash aside. • 1/2 cup butter 3. Add oil to large saucepan over • Ten fresh sage leaves medium heat. Add onion and • Parmesan cheese garlic. Sauté until soft. Remove Toasted pecans

20

from heat. Add squash, ricotta and nutmeg. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Set aside. 4. Place wonton wrapper on work surface. Brush lightly with water using pastry brush. Place one tsp. filling on each wrapper. 5. Fold in half pushing out any air and pressing edges tightly to seal. (Can be frozen at this point by lying flat on baking sheet. After frozen place in

freezer bag.) 6. Add wontons to large pot of boiling salted water. 7. Cook 2-3 minutes. Remove and drain well. 8. In a large sauté pan, melt butter over medium heat. Add the sage and continue to cook until the butter browns. 9. Add ravioli to sauce. Place ravioli in plate. Garnish with parmesan and pecans. to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

Terry removed as England captain, can still play LONDON (AP) — John Terry was removed as England’s soccer captain Friday as he awaits trial for racial abuse. The star Chelsea defender remains eligible to play for the national team at the European Championship. The English Football Association said Terry will be stripped of his captaincy “until the allegations against him are resolved.” Terry faces trial in July on charges of racially abusing Queens Park defender Anton Ferdinand during a Premier League game in October. “This decision has been taken due to the higher profile nature of the England captaincy, on and off the pitch, and the additional demands and requirements expected of the captain leading into and during a tournament,” the FA said. In 2010, Terry lost the captaincy before the World Cup over allegations he had an affair with the former girlfriend of England teammate Wayne Bridge. England coach Fabio Capello was not consulted about this latest decision. The British government backed the FA’s ruling. “It would have been impossible for John Terry to have continued as captain with this charge over his head,” Sports Minister Hugh Robertson said. Capello and the FA had expected the 31-year-old Terry’s trial would take place before the European

But a judge Wednesday delayed the trial until July 9, a week after the Euro 2012 final, after Chelsea said it would be difficult for players to testify during the Premier League season. Chelsea said Terry will remain captain of the club. Terry will miss Sunday’s match against Manchester United because of a knee injury. “It was the FA’s decision,” Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas said Friday. “I don’t agree with it.” Terry has played 72 times for

England since his debut in 2003. Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard is now in line to take over as England captain. Vice captain Rio Ferdinand said Friday he does not want the job again after being dropped from the role by Capello last year. This season has been marred by racism allegations, with Liverpool striker Luis Suarez completing an eight-match ban for repeated racial abuse of Manchester United defender Patrice Evra during a match in October.

Tevez return is possible - Mancini Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini has named Carlos Tevez in his 25-man squad for the remainder of the season and admitted he could pick him again. Mancini said a fully-fit Tevez could wear the sky blue shirt again, despite previously asserting that the Argentina international was “finished” at City. Tevez remains at City after interest from AC Milan, Inter Milan and Paris St Germain failed to turn into a transfer. “If he comes back - and he is fit - it is possible,” conceded Mancini. Tevez, 27, remains in Argentina and, as yet, there has been no indication when the striker may return. “Carlos is not an option at the moment but it is possible in the future

if he comes back,” added Mancini. “I hope for him he has been training in the last three months to help his condition. “There is only one thing on my mind, the Barclays Premier League.” Mancini has confirmed Owen Hargreaves remains available but has struggled to gain any consistent form during his time at City, triggering the deadline-day loan deal that saw David Pizarro move from Roma. “Owen always has these little problems,” said Mancini. “When he came to us in the summer we took a gamble because he had not played for two years. “We thought we could try and get him fit in two or three months and

then he would be able to play. “But, like any player who hasn’t played for two years, when they start to train, every day there is a problem, with his knee or his hamstring. “I hope for him he eventually is able to play all the time. He deserves to.” to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

Unlike Patriots, NFL slow to embrace ‘Moneyball’ WASHINGTON (AP) — It’s advice that sounds like heresy on the gridiron: Go for it on fourth down. Try more onside kicks. Running backs don’t matter much. But to stats geeks, this is the gospel from the spreadsheets. The number-savvy economists, statisticians and refugees from Wall Street who revolutionized much of baseball in a way celebrated in the book and movie “Moneyball” are aiming their calculators at football. But so far they aren’t making much headway. The complex team-oriented game is difficult to break down into interchangeable numbers, and the men who run the sport are even tougher to change. If baseball is in the 10th year of adopting “Moneyball” concepts, football is barely in year one, several sports number gurus say. There is one NFL team that seems to best epitomize an increased amount of numberbased decision-making, top sports statisticians agree. And that team, the New England Patriots, will be playing on Super Bowl Sunday for the fifth time in 11 years. “The Patriots are the ‘Moneyball’ team of the NFL, no doubt about it,” said Brian Burke, founder of Advanced NFL Stats Inc. “The Patriots are in the Super Bowl because they have this system and stick to it. The Giants are in the Super Bowl because they are lucky.” The statisticians are trying to bring mathematics and economics to decisions made on field strategy and player drafting. It’s called analytics and in many, but not all, ways it runs counter to decades of football philosophy. The numbers show that: — Icing the kicker — calling a

last-second timeout to put more pressure on him — doesn’t work. — The cliché that defense wins championships is wrong. — Top first-round draft picks are overvalued compared to picks a bit lower. So says Tobias Moskowitz, a University of Chicago economics professor and co-author of the book “Scorecasting.” Stats guys can spout the numbers proving them right. But when football teams hit the field and general managers compile their rosters, all that doesn’t seem to matter. They punt on fourthand-2 even though they have a 75 percent chance of making a first down. They ice the kicker. And they talk about how it all starts and ends on the defensive side of the line, even though when Moskowitz ran the numbers, the best offense won as many championships as the best defense. The presence of the Patriots in Sunday’s game, and the win by the New Orleans Saints two years ago, show that it’s nonsense to say defense wins championships, said Aaron Schatz, founder of Football Outsiders and a pioneer in the young field. “This year is the most offensively focused of all time,” he said. “These are the two worst defenses to ever play in the Super Bowl in terms of yards allowed.” Sunday’s game also supports another mantra of the numbers geeks: “a running back is a running back is a running back.” Shane Reese, a statistics professor at Brigham Young University, said an average-to-good running back with an excellent line works just as well as a superstar running back. “The running back is an overrated position,” he says.
