At a top-level meeting tomorrow, government officials will seek to discourage divers from cliff jumping near Pedro Castle, hoping to avoid further tragedies after last weeks two drownings.

Included in the Friday gathering at the Crighton Building offices of the Tourism Attraction Board (TAB), which owns Pedro Castle, will be Marine Unit Inspector Clive Smith; Chief Inspector Robert Scotland, in charge of the Bodden Town Police Station: Port Authority Security Officer Joseph Woods; TAB CEO Gilbert Connolly; Minister for Health, Youth and Sports Mark Scotland, also Bodden Town MLA:, and a collection of coastal landowners adjacent to the national historical site.

More than a dozen individuals, some as far away as New Jersey, own sections of the coastline between the easternmost Bill Eden Point, on Old Jones Bay, and Great Pedro Point at the western end of the St James area.

From that point to Pedro Castle alone is 2,700 feet.

Bad weather means Spotts storm

Cruise-ship passengers overran Spotts Landing on Tuesday as foul weather prevented tendering in George Town, sending most ships past Cayman altogether, choking off still more tourism revenue.

High winds drove at least two Carnival ships past Cayman, leaving transport companies to tender thousands of passengers from two other ships to cramped facilities at Spotts Landing, where immigration and transport queues behind hurricane fencing topped with barbedwire turned the area into a prison yard.

Asked about the facilities, one tourist replied: “What else can they do when the seas are so bad? You can either stay on the ship or go along with what they set up.” Asked if it looked like a prison, he said: “Yep. And look at the long queue to get back on the boat.”

Captain Bryan Ebanks, who oversaw tendering services for five years at the Prospect-based foul-weather harbour, pointed out a growing problem: “Look at what happened. Two ships

came in, and every time there is bad weather, the Carnival ships won’t even stop. They just continue to go by.

“Carnival does not want to tender their people at Spotts, and it leaves the question how they are going to get downtown to the stores from there.”

A leading advocate of all-weather docking facilities in Red Bay, Capt Bryan said the proposed docks were less than half the distance from downtown George Town as Spotts Landing.

Even with China Harbour Engineering’s projected $4.2 million of improvements at the pier, “the problem will continue to go on and on and on,” said architect Burns Conolly, another Red Bay supporter.

“The swells in Spotts roll the ships,”

he said, underlining that even George Town cruise berths will not eliminate the need for alternative facilities at Spotts.

“It’s very simple, and what I have been saying, even when the ships come in” braving inclement weather, “they do not want to come at all at Spotts.”

Capt Bryan said that even new berths in Hog Sty Bay mean “we still won’t have a safe harbour and we will still be turning ships away, and it’s because of that ‘wheelbarrow mentality’.

The [merchants] downtown want to roll things off the ships and right up to their front door. It doesn’t make sense. They are not thinking of what is best for the country.”

Baldwin yanked NE

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) — Alec Baldwin’s antics aboard an American Airlines flight have gotten him grounded as a spokesman for a New York-based supermarket chain.

A spokeswoman for Wegmans Food Markets tells Rochester media outlets that the company pulled television ads featuring Baldwin after some customers complained about his behavior that resulted in his being booted from a Dec. 6 flight at Los Angeles International Airport.

Baldwin was removed from the New York-bound plane for refusing to turn off his cellphone.

The TV spots were filmed for the 2010 holiday season. The commercials were supposed to run again for three weeks last month but were pulled a week early after Baldwin’s airline dustup.

Baldwin was hired for the ads after he mentioned that his mother, who lives in the Syracuse area, is a loyal Wegmans customer.

Scorsese to be honored LONDON (AP) — Britain’s film academy is honoring Martin Scorsese for his “outstanding and exceptional” contribution to cinema.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts said Wednesday that Scorsese will receive its highest honor, the Academy Fellowship, at a ceremony next month.

Academy chairman Tim Corrie said the director of “Taxi Driver,” ‘’Raging Bull” and “Hugo” was “a true inspiration to all young directors the world over.”

Scorsese said he was honored to receive the fellowship, whose previous recipients include Charlie Chaplin, Alfred Hitchcock and Elizabeth Taylor.

The British awards, popularly known as BAFTAs, are considered an important indicator of likely success at Hollywood’s Academy Awards.

They will be presented Feb. 12 at London’s Royal Opera House.

“My piece of land is east of Pedro Castle,” said Barry Bodden, owner of Island Paving, “and I would not have a problem if the government wanted to put up signs.

“I have seen people jumping, but I know it wasn’t on our piece of land. I was out fishing around there one day and said ‘holy cow, what’s going on?’

I grew up in that area and I wondered how you get back out of the water.

There was a ledge they climbed on.

They had a rope or something they used to come out and get back on top.”

He was unsure about the effectiveness of warning signs, however.

“If the government wants to put signs on top, it might stop tourists, but most of the locals are likely to know the risks,” Mr Bodden said. “It’s just the sort of thing that, sooner or later, you’re going to get in trouble.”

The Port Authority’s Mr Woods acknowledged the unit had little jurisdiction in the Pedro Castle area, but would offer its experience and advice.

“We mostly look after cargo and ships in the harbour area, and do channel markers and safety equipment, but because we are a small country and we are accustomed to working inter-agency, we’ll attend to hear the discussions and offer anything we can. We do a lot of work with the Marine Authority, the police and the Department of the Environment,” Mr Woods said.

Inspector Davis told iNews Cayman that area landowners were largely immune from potential lawsuits in the recent drowning deaths – Justin Henry, 16, on 26 December, and Adam Rankine, 21, on 1 January – and that, if anything, the boys had been guilty of trespassing.

“They would be liable because they were on private property,” he said, while written warnings would indemnify landowners against future accidents.

Inspector Smith’s remarks echoed similar statements by Mr Scotland, who told iNews Cayman on Sunday that the welter of private ownership in the area limited government’s ability to mandate warning signs and fencing, which, without enforcement, could prove ineffective.

Cat survives two euthanasia attempts

WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah (AP) — A stray cat has survived two attempts by a Utah shelter to put her down.

Andrea the cat had not been adopted for 30 days, so officials at a West Valley City shelter put her in a gas chamber in the first attempt to euthanize her in October. She survived, so they gassed her again.

Shelter officials presumed she was dead when they put her in a plastic bag in a cooler. She was later found alive.

Andrea has since been adopted.

But her case has led animal shelter volunteers to try to change the euthanasia procedure to lethal injection.

Volunteers are expected to argue for the change at a city council meeting Tuesday night.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports that shelter officials aren’t sure why the gassing failed.

Man tried to use $1M bill LEXINGTON, N.C. (AP) — Do you have change for a million-dollar bill?

Police say a North Carolina man insisted his million-dollar note was real when he was buying $476 worth of items at a Walmart.

Investigators told the WinstonSalem Journal that 53-year-old Michael Fuller tried to buy a vacuum cleaner, a microwave oven and other items. Store employees called police after his insistence that the bill was legit, and Fuller was arrested.

Fuller was charged with attempting to obtain property by false pretense and uttering a forged instrument. He is in jail on a $17,500 bond, and it isn’t clear if he has an attorney. He is scheduled to be in court Tuesday.

Obama going to Ohio to challenge GOP on economy WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama is pushing his economic message in Ohio, brandishing his presidential megaphone in a politically important state to make certain his appeal to the middle class is heard amid the boisterous start of the Republican campaign for the White House.

Obama was traveling Wednesday to the most Democratic congressional district in Ohio, a Cleveland suburb, a day after Mitt Romney won Iowa’s Republican presidential caucuses by just eight votes. Obama’s trip signals

the White House’s intent to keep the president in the public eye even as the political world focuses on the GOP’s selection process.

The White House’s choice of Ohio for Obama’s first presidential trip of 2012 underscores the state’s highprofile role in presidential politics. It is a swing state that went for George W. Bush in 2004 and for Obama in 2008.

A top manufacturing state, Ohio has seen its jobless rate follow the national pattern; unemployment was 8.5 percent in November compared with 9.6 percent a year before.

Obama set the tone Tuesday for a White House strategy that aims to maintain pressure on congressional Republicans while promoting an economic plan that serves as much as a policy prescription as it does a political platform for the general election.

Soldier denies knowing of explosives in plane bag MIDLAND, Texas (AP) — A soldier charged with trying to bring explosives on an airplane in Texas told investigators he used them in Afghanistan but didn’t realize any were in a bag he brought back to the U.S. and apparently carried on a flight from North Carolina to Texas.

Authorities say the 30-year-old had a carry-on bag containing C4, a powerful explosive used in Iraq and Afghanistan

According to court documents, Atwater told the FBI he is a demolitions expert who returned from his third deployment to Afghanistan in April.

He said the bag had been in his garage since then and he didn’t see any explosives in the main compartment when he packed for his trip to Texas.

Swiss bank chief profited by dollar trades GENEVA (AP) — A Swiss political weekly says Switzerland’s central bank chief personally engaged in profitable currency deals previously thought to have been conducted by his wife, a claim that could increase the pressure on SNB President Philipp Hildebrand to step down.

Hildebrand (pictured) has yet to comment on the case, which first became public when the SNB issued an unprompted statement Dec. 23 declaring that “rumors” of wrongdoing by its 48-year-old chief were unfounded and its rules against insider trading weren’t breached.

Warnings, interference and being cynical.

Because of the two recent colin.wilson@ieyenews.com deaths at Pedro Castle it would seem that warning signs are going to be the order of the day. With a 21 year old man deciding to risk his life by jumping into the sea there less than a week after a teenager did the same thing and drowned, I am just cynical in my old age that I wonder if signs are going to make any difference?

However, the authorities must do something. They take the blame when people act stupidly but someone must be censured even if they haven’t really contributed to the accident. I have already said enough on the subject but it does make me angry and very sad when lives are lost so unnecessarily.

Another area of anger and cynicism is interference by top officials to cover up, delay or even alter reports from top civil servants that show them up in a negative light. It should never happen and “will not happen on my watch” is the cry but it does and from the very people who are in place to oversee and stop this very thing.

I am, of course, talking about Operation Tempura and the delay in the release of the Tempura report from the former Auditor General, Dan Duguay in 2009. I applaud John Evans, a former Operation Tempura witness who sought

correspondence under the Freedom of Information Law, which revealed that both then, Governor Stuart Jack and then, Deputy Chief Secretary Donovan Ebanks objected to the way the 2009 report’s findings were presented in several areas.

Cheryll Richards, who at the time was Solicitor General, sought to correct several factual inaccuracies in the report and also addressed its potential impact involving the two criminal trials involving individuals arrested during the course of Operation Tempura – former Deputy Police Commissioner Rudolph Dixon and former Cayman Brac MLA Lyndon Martin. However, after the auditor’s report was redrafted, M/s Richards on 14th July 2009 said in her opinion the second draft report, “in so far as the facts cited are within our knowledge, there are no apparent difficulties.”

Mr. Duguay’s report was, however, not released until after the two defendants, Dixon and Martin, were found not guilty of public misconduct in October 2009.

There is no doubt, in my opinion and it is only MY opinion, that there were attempts to bury what happened.

Mr Evans has publically said this on another media house site, so it is not just my opinion....

Take no notice, though, I am just a cynic.

Car catalytic converter fires Georgina Wilcox

An important part of your vehicle’s emission system is the catalytic converter. It is tasked with reducing harmful emissions that pollute the atmosphere and it has been a part of nearly every passenger vehicle built since the mid 1970s. Unfortunately, the catalytic converter can also run very hot and, at the same time, spark ignition of anything that it comes into contact with.

A friend of mine recently parked

his brand new sports car under one of Cayman’s large leafy trees to shade it from the hot rays of the sun before going into his condominium. Less than ten minutes later he heard the sounds of sirens. At first, my friend didn’t give it much thought, but as the sirens drew closer he decided to go outside and investigate. To his utter horror, a car nearby to him was engulfed in flames.

In my friend’s case he had parked his car directly over a small leaf pile that had fallen from the tree providing the shade. It was these leaves that started the fire due to a spark from his car’s catalytic converter.

When parking your vehicle, take care to make sure that no debris is on the ground directly underneath your car.

Even a small pile of dried out leaves can be just enough fodder for a fire.

You may not notice them when parking your car under a shady tree.

Healthy eating and physical fitness go together, but there are no magic foods that cause you to be one hundred percent healthy by just eating the one food. No, you need a variety of foods from each of these food groups each day.

It’s also important to watch the portion size so as not to overeat.

Make your meal times pleasant and relaxed occasions and your healthy foods will work effectively with your healthy emotions to give you a healthy body.

Berries You may like all types of berries or just one or two favorites, but you can never go wrong by adding a few fresh berries as a quick energy snack or frozen berries made into a luscious smoothie in place of calorie laden desserts. Berries are high in vitamin C across the board, but some are high in other nutrients as well. Choose ripe blueberries for vitamin C and heaps of anti-oxidants for the health of your circulatory system.

Gogi berries are less well-known but are wonderfully rich in many of the nutrients your body needs to be nutritionally and physically fit.

Citrus The foods of the citrus family are widely recognized as a valuable source of vitamin C. Choose fully ripe citrus fruits for the best nutritional value and choose citrus as near to the tree as possible. Tree ripened fruits picked at the peak of perfection and consumed with

good nutritional products, but did you realize that flax seeds are brain food--containing critical non-meat sources of the Omega-3 oil.

“The Moment,” was the focus of Elmslie Memorial Church’s Watch Night service.

The congregation all joined together for the first hymn, ‘Saviour Like a Shepherd Lead Us’.

Joan Wilson read the scripture, from the New Testament, 1 Corinthians Chapter 13, verses 4-13: “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonour others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

Preacher, Dr. Yvette NobleBloomfied preached on the theme “The moment.”

That moment was one of decision, of making a new commitment to Christ through a process of introspection and self-evaluation, she said.

“I don’t know why some of us want to come to church tonight – maybe it is out of a tradition. Maybe it is out of a yearning to be with God. Maybe to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

“But whatever your reason for coming, God wants to spend this moment with you. And God calls each of us into a moment of time when we can be reconciled with God, when we can begin to understand what it means to be obedient to God and to be faithful to our covenant with God, and a moment in time when we can know his the blessed assurance that God is with us and we need not fear.

“It is also a moment with yourself.

Many of us are afraid of being with ourselves. We must be constantly surrounded by activities, by conversation, and music and noise, and we are afraid of zeroing in and looking deeply into our souls,” she continued.

“It has to be a moment before God and before self, where we can look at our integrity, look at our consistency, look at our spiritual disciplines, look at how we are with ourselves, and I would hasten to say, it is a moment also with others,” “We must come to recognize that many times when we act we act out of selfish motives, that we tend to enforce on others our desires, and

these are some of the things which destroy relationships. Sometimes even in the church we can force on others our own selfish desires under the guise of being ‘a word from God,’” she said.

After the prayer ministry session, when members of the congregation are invited to come forward for prayer, the final hymn of the evening was ‘O God Our Help In Ages Past’.

Everyone joined in the countdown to the New Year, before joining in a chorus of ‘Auld Lang Syne’.

Clean water is vital to the human body as it is composed of 50 to 70 per cent water. The human body needs a regular supply of clean drinking water to maintain health. We need clean water for cooking and making beverages. Healthy eating and clean water go hand in hand. Clean water is required worldwide.

If we fail to clean water and keep it clean, we will be dependent upon a diet of contaminated food. Not only fish, but other meats, fruits, and vegetables will deliver contamination to us. If we want healthful, clean fish to leap forth from rivers, streams, and oceans, we will have to clean water. If we want healthful, organic produce, we will have to clean water used to irrigate produce.

Clean drinking water is vital to health, yet the UN and the World Health Organization (WHO) report that 1.1 billion people around the globe lack access to clean drinking water. The health consequences are devastating.

The UN attributes 2.2 million deaths annually to poor water and sanitation.

If we clean water, provide better sanitation, and teach people how to keep water clean, future generations can enjoy longer and healthier lives.

A swimmer in clean water is safe from illnesses and diseases produced by contaminated and toxic water. A surfer does not have to fear swallowing water in a wipe out. Boaters and others who use our water for recreation can relax without concern about pollutants.

Yet, 27 years after the passage of the 1972 Clean Water Act, 40% of our rivers, lakes, and estuaries were still too polluted for safe swimming and similar water sports.

We must clean water when there are oil spills, of course, but we must also work to clean water flowing into our oceans, lakes, rivers, and streams. We must clean water for wildlife that does not live in the water, but depends on clean water for health and cleanliness.

The emissions involved in producing bottled water are astounding. Pablo Paster, a Greenhouse Gas and Sustainability Engineer, did a thorough and exhaustive study of the cost of bringing a single liter of Fiji Water to America. He found that bottlers use nearly seven times as much water to bottle it than you actually drink. The total amount of water used to produce and deliver one bottle of imported water is 6.74 kg! In the process of making the bottle, getting water into the bottle, and delivering it to you, 250g of GHG emissions were released. Each plastic drinking-water bottle takes hundreds of years to biodegrade in a landfill. Many plastic drinking-water

bottles litter the countryside. Some will be recycled, but the recycling process is said to pollute the environment with toxic carcinogens. If we clean water so that it is truly free of contaminants, additives, bacteria, and virus, people are less likely to rely on bottled water.

Rain is just one step in the water cycle. Pure rain does not automatically fall through the universe, filtered by the atmosphere and delivered from pure clouds. Neither does pure snow.

The rain, snow, and other precipitation we receive find their way into the sky from bodies of water on earth. If we fail to clean water on earth, we will have increasingly polluted precipitation.

Polluted precipitation is harmful to everyone and everything on which it falls.

Whether it’s your laundry in the washer, your carpet beneath the cleaning machine, or your body under the shower, clean water is necessary for all-around cleanliness. From early preschool years onward, children are taught proper hygiene - and it depends on clean water.

Many have expressed growing concern that water wars are more likely in the future than current battles for oil.

Where access to clean water is the very essence of life, ‘no water’ may mean ‘no peace.’

LONDON (AP) — A British judge sentenced two men yesterday to at least 14 years in prison for stabbing a black teenager to death in London almost two decades ago — a crime that exposed racism within the police and set the victim’s family on a long quest for justice.

The murder of 18-year-old Stephen Lawrence in 1993 shocked the country and came to be seen as a festering racial injustice. It took 19 years before anyone was convicted, and three other suspects remain at large.

Judge Colman Treacy called the murder an evil crime motivated by racial hatred. He sentenced Gary Dobson to a minimum of 15 years and 2 months in jail, and David Norris to 14 years and 3 months.

Dobson’s father shouted out “shame on you” from the public gallery after the sentence was announced at London’s Central Criminal Court.

As the judge stood up to leave after delivering his sentence, a few people began to clap.

Norris gave a thumbs up sign to his supporters in the public gallery as he was led from court. Both men maintain they are innocent.

Treacy said the sentences were shorter than many would have expected as both men were teenagers when the crime took place.

Treacy said that an adult today convicted of a racist knife murder

would get a minimum of 30 years in jail, but as Dobson was 17 and Norris just 16 at the time of the crime, he only had to give them a minimum of 12 years.

He added extra time because of the racist nature of their attack and because neither had shown any remorse.

Outside court, Lawrence’s mother Doreen Lawrence said the killers had received short sentences but “the judge’s hands were tied.”

She said the sentences were “the beginning of starting a new life because we’ve been in limbo for so long.”

“So today we’re going to start moving on, and it’s time to take control of my life once more,” she said.

While sentencing Dobson and Norris, Treacy said the two belonged to a “racist, thuggish gang.”

He said the evidence in the trial could not prove who wielded the knife that killed Lawrence, but he said that whoever used it had done so with Dobson and Norris’s “knowledge and approval.”

Another three men had been initially arrested after Lawrence’s murder but have never been convicted of the crime.

Outside court, Stephen’s father Neville Lawrence said he hoped Dobson and Norris would now identify other members of the gang.

Lawrence was killed in April 1993 by five youths who shouted racial insults and then stabbed him in the arm and chest as he waited at a bus stop with a friend.

Police arrested five young men including Norris and Dobson and charged two with murder. But the state abandoned the case, saying there was insufficient evidence.

Florida was weird as only it can be in 2011

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Did you hear about the giant Lego man that washed up on Siesta Key beach? What about the man who walked into a bar, ordered a beer and disappeared for 30 minutes to rob a bank, only to return and finish his drink? Or how about the puzzling story of the baby grand piano that showed up on a sandbar near Miami?

That’s Florida, where weird is an everyday event.

Over the past year, a 92-year-old woman fired four shots at a neighbour who refused to kiss her, a Delray Beach man cut off a piece of a dead whale that washed ashore — planning to eat it — and an 8-year-old girl gave her teacher some marijuana and said: “This is some of my mom’s weed.”

The piano was a mystery for about a month. On Jan. 1, 2011, the charred instrument showed up on a Biscayne Bay sandbar, a couple hundred yards from shore. A 16-year-old student eventually admitted he put it there as part of an art project. A day after it was removed, someone set up a table with two chairs, place settings and a bottle of wine.

It’s still not clear how the 100-pound, 8-foot-tall Lego man washed ashore.

The local tourism bureau hoped to use Lego man to promote the area, but the man who found it has placed a claim on it. He can keep it if the owner doesn’t collect it before early next year. As for the bar-bank robber, he was arrested at his watering hole, not too long after the holdup.

and fantasy, said the state is an odd place because of its diverse, highly transient population.

“There’s pockets of strangeness all over the country, but here it’s a baseline lifestyle. There, it’s the aberration.

Young people made up a large part of the peculiar tales.

In Palm Beach County, an elementary school teacher opened an end-of-theyear gift from an 8-year-old student’s grandmother and found toiletries and a loaded handgun. A Tampa woman upset with her 15-year-old son’s bad grades forced him to stand on a street corner with a sign that read: “Honk if I need an education.”

A 15-year-old Florida Keys girl who is a big fan of the “Twilight” books and movies was afraid that her mother would get upset by the bite marks her boyfriend gave her after they acted out her vampire fantasy. She made up a story about being attacked; doubtful investigators got her to tell the truth.

Deputies arrested an 18-monthold’s father after they found the man passed out in his mobile home while the toddler was in the yard picking up beer cans and drinking them.

Pasco County deputies said a woman walked into a bank with a 3-yearold boy and robbed it. A homeless man held up a Tampa bank, fled on a city bus and handed out stolen cash to passengers.

And while he didn’t rob it, an unhappy Palm Coast bank customer left quite a deposit. He urinated in a

drive-thru bank tube and drove off.

Animals always account for a fair share of odd news. At the Miami airport, a Brazilian trying to get through security was caught with several baby pythons and tortoise hatchlings in his underwear. A woman found a 7-foot alligator in her bathroom, and a man stored his dead cougar in a freezer.

In north-central Florida, an Ocala ice cream shop got rid of its costumed mascot — a waving vanilla cone — because passers-by kept mistaking him for a hooded Ku Klux Klansman.

In unusual crime stories, two managers of a Lake City Domino’s Pizza were charged with burning down a rival Papa John’s as a way to increase business. Two deaf men using sign language were stabbed at a Hallandale Beach bar when another costumer thought they were flashing gang signs.

And finally, a North Naples man who was pulled over for a traffic violation called 911 and reported a shooting nearby to get out of a ticket. He still got a ticket and was also charged with making a false 911 call.

Williams withdraws from Brisbane with injury

BRISBANE, Australia (AP) — Serena Williams’ Australian Open preparations took a major hit Wednesday when she injured her left ankle and withdrew from the Brisbane International.

In her first tournament since losing the U.S. Open final in September, Williams was serving for the match with a 6-2, 5-3 lead against Bojana Jovanovski of Serbia when she twisted her ankle and crashed heavily to the court.

The 13-time Grand Slam winner lay near the baseline for several minutes while getting medical attention.

She was helped to a courtside chair and had the ankle re-taped before resuming the second-round match and losing the next point to surrender a service break to Jovanovski.

Williams limped through the next game, wincing in pain after at least two points, before securing a 6-2, 6-4 win to advance to the Brisbane quarterfinals in her first trip Down Under since 2010, when she won her fifth Australian Open title.

She withdrew from the Brisbane tournament later Wednesday, saying that tests “confirmed that I have a left ankle sprain (and) that I probably shouldn’t play on.”

“I’m going to take a couple of days off — not too many — and see how I feel,” Williams said in a statement.

Her scheduled quarterfinal rival, Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia, advances directly to the Brisbane semifinals. U.S. Open champion Sam Stosur was eliminated in the match on center court immediately before Williams went on.

Williams hobbled into a postmatch news conference with her ankle heavily wrapped and initially said she was “anticipating it’ll be OK.” “I’m always thinking I can play on, but at the same time I don’t want to stress it out right now,” Williams said.

Even if Williams’ ankle heals, her fitness for the year’s first Grand Slam tournament could be an issue given that she’s only played two matches in four months.

The Australian Open starts on Jan. 16 in Melbourne. Williams missed the 2011 Australian Open while she was recovering from two operations on her foot and blood clots in her lungs that kept her

sidelined for about a year after the 2010 Wimbledon tournament.

She won two tournaments heading into the U.S. Open in August but, after losing the final to Sam Stosur, Williams didn’t play another tournament last year due to injuries.

Williams said her first thought when she sprawled to the court near the baseline on Wednesday was “not again.”

“That’s what I felt,” she said. “I was like, ‘No way.’”

Williams usually wears a protective guard on her left ankle, but took it off during the second set because it was irritating another minor injury on her foot.

Stosur lost to Iveta Benesova 6-4, 6-2 to extend her run of never advancing beyond the second round at her home tournament.

It was the 28-year-old Benesova’s fourth win over a top-10 player.

The No. 54-ranked Czech had never taken a set off Stosur in four previous matches but now finds herself in a quarterfinal match against Australian Open champion Kim Clijsters.

“Hopefully it was just a bad day and I will bounce back next week and the week after,” Stosur said. “I don’t want to dwell on it.

Avoiding pirates, Groupama wins ocean race leg

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — French team Groupama earned its first stage victory in the Volvo Ocean Race on Wednesday, defeating overall leader Telefonica in a sprint to Abu Dhabi to complete the second leg.

The five-boat fleet set off on a 98-nautical-mile sprint from nearby Sharjah to finish a leg that began last month in Cape Town, South Africa. The boats initially

sailed to a secret “safe haven” port in the Indian Ocean to avoid pirates before being shipped to the United Arab Emirates.

Groupama overtook Telefonica shortly before the finishing line to clinch the victory.

“We had one last opportunity downwind but we didn’t really believe in it,” said Groupama skipper Franck Cammas. “Then, with a gust, we managed to overtake them.”

“This morning we were a little worried about the repair,” Cammas said. “Now, I think we were so fast we will leave it the way it is.”

Telefonica extended its overall lead over Camper, which finished

third in the stage. American team Puma was fourth, ahead of Abu Dhabi in fifth.

Telefonica has 66 points in the overall standings, with Camper second on 58 and Groupama third on 42.

The next event will be an inport race in Abu Dhabi on Jan. 13.

Then its seven offshore legs and seven more in-port races before the round-the-world race finishes in July in alway, Ireland.

Captain Michael Clarke batted through day two to score an unbeaten 251 as Australia took complete control of the second Test against India in Sydney.

The hosts began the day on 116-3 and only lost one wicket all day as Clarke added 288 with Ricky Ponting (134).

Dropped by Ishant Sharma on 182, the skipper reached the highest Sydney Cricket Ground score by an Australian.

After Ponting fell, Mike Hussey (55 not out) helped Clarke take Australia to 482-4 by the close, a lead of 291.

Ponting’s place in the side had been increasingly questioned in the lead-up to the series, but he reached his first Test century for 34 innings, having last passed three figures in making 209 against Pakistan in Hobart in January 2010.

He was so nearly run out for 99 after pushing Sharma for a quick single as Zaheer Khan’s throw from mid-on narrowly missed the stumps.

Ponting had to dive full-length to make his ground and, his shirt covered in dirt, acknowledged a warm reception for his first Test ton in nearly two years before eventually holing out to Sachin Tendulkar at point.

But it was local New South Wales hero Clarke who will take the biggest plaudits after hitting 31 fours and a six to easily pass his previous highest Test score, 168, on his home ground.

“I don’t really know how I’m still out there, but Punter [Ponting] and Huss were outstanding and kept me going,” said Clarke.

“It’s nice to make my highest Test score at the SCG, but it’s important to get as many runs as we can in the first innings - if we can get a 350 lead we’ll be in good shape.”

The chance he gave to Sharma was a difficult return catch off the right-arm paceman’s own bowling, but one that will be rued by India as they already face a difficult task to save the game and avoid Australia taking a 2-0 lead in the four-Test series.

Michigan beats Va. Tech in Sugar Bowl, 23-20

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — As Brady Hoke trotted across the Superdome field, his Michigan players celebrating all around him, a big bucket of ice water suddenly came splashing down on the coach’s head.

It had been quite a while since the Wolverines won a BCS bowl and they were going to enjoy it.

“All the tough times we’ve been through makes it even more special,” senior defensive tackle Mike Martin said. “To be the fifth team that ever in Michigan history has won 11 games in a season, it means a lot.”

Brendan Gibbons drilled a 37yard field goal down the middle in overtime, lifting No. 13 Michigan to a 23-20 victory over 17th-ranked Virginia Tech in the Sugar Bowl at the Superdome on Tuesday night.

The victory capped an impressive debut season for Hoke, who has led the Wolverines (11-2) back to prominence with their first BCS bowl victory since the 2000 Orange Bowl.

“I’m just real proud,” Hoke said, noting that only five Michigan teams in 132 have won 11 games in a season.

“Real proud of our seniors, real proud of how they took this football team last January and molded it and did a tremendous job,” Denard Robinson highlighted an otherwise unspectacular night with touchdown passes of 45 and 18 yards to game MVP Junior Hemingway.

“It shows everything we put in from Day One, all the long days, long nights,” Hemingway said, his voice cracking with emotion. “Man, I’m telling you, it feels too good, man.

Too good.”

Virginia Tech gave the Wolverines all they could handle and might have won if not for some key miscues.

“I’m about half-sick right now,” Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer said. “They weren’t stopping us; we were stopping ourselves.”

Virginia Tech (11-3) more than doubled Michigan’s total yards, 377-184, and had 22 first downs to Michigan’s 12, but settled for four field goals in regulation by thirdstring kicker Justin Myer.

However, Myer was unable to connect on his fifth try from 37 yards away in the opening possession of overtime. Robinson finished 9 for 21 for 117 yards passing and threw an interception. He rushed 13 times for a season-low 13 yards.

“I feel like this was a team that didn’t quit and we just kept fighting,” Robinson said. “We held everybody accountable for what we had to do to win.”

Virginia Tech first-year starter Logan Thomas was 19 of 28 of 214 yards with one interception.

Thomas scored Tech’s only touchdown on a 1-yard keeper that tied the game at 17 — after a 2-point conversion — early in the fourth quarter.

Virginia Tech senior receiver Danny Coale had eight catches for 117 yards, and nearly made a spectacular diving catch for a touchdown in overtime. Coale held on to the ball for what was initially ruled a score, but the play was overturned on video review, which showed the receiver narrowly landed on the sideline.

“Danny’s play is so close, and it seemed like there was just quite a few of those there tonight,” Beamer said. The result of that third-down play forced Tech to try for Myer’s failed field goal.

Michigan then used three runs to set up Gibbons in the middle of the field.

As his kick sailed through, Gibbons sprinted toward the Wolverines’ sideline and was mobbed by teammates while the Michigan band belted out the school’s fight song, “The Victors,” while Michigan fans, in rhythm, thrust a sea of maize pom-poms in the air.

Virginia Tech fell behind late in regulation after gambling on a fake punt. Michigan’s Jake Ryan stopped it at the Tech 45, leading to a short drive that set up Gibbons’ go-ahead 39-yard field goal with 4 minutes left. That left just enough time for the Hokies to tie it, even though they had to start at their own 9 after a holding penalty on the kickoff.

Thomas marched the Hokies 83 yards in 3:58, setting up Myer’s game-tying 25-yarder.

Hemingway staked Michigan to a 17-6 lead in the third quarter when he soared over Tech’s Antone Exum for an 18-yard catch in the back of the end zone. The scoring drive was set up by an even more difficult grab by reserve Michigan linebacker Frank Clark, who leaped and reached high over his head to snag Thomas’ pass at close range, returning the interception to the Tech 35-yard line.

“I was just trying to dump it over his head. He timed his jump perfectly and got his hands on it and came down with it,” Thomas said.

“He made a great play.”

KENNY DALGLISH admits Liverpool FC suffered a “harsh lesson” after slumping to defeat at Premier League leaders Manchester City.

Sergio Aguero and Yaya Toure struck in the first half before James Milner’s late penalty sealed a 3-0 defeat for Liverpool FC at Eastlands last night.

All three goals owed much to defensive mistakes with Liverpool FC unable to make the most of a generous amount of possession, most notably when Stewart Downing wasted a glorious chance to open the scoring early on.

And Dalglish accepts the Anfield outfit have only themselves to blame after falling further behind in the race for Champions League qualification.

“I’m not so sure the scoreline reflects how the game went,” said the Liverpool manager. “I’m not saying we deserved to win but the lesson we have learned is that if we are not clinical we are going to suffer.

“There are a lot of things that happened tonight that we can correct ourselves, so we need to go and do that.

“It was a harsh lesson but it will be even harsher if we don’t learn from it.”

Shortly before Milner’s spot kick, City midfielder Gareth Barry had been dismissed for a second bookable offence.

And Dalglish added: “We had a good opportunity to open the scoring, then we lose the first goal from losing possession

and the second goal was a corner when we had the warning just before it.

“Then the third came when they had just gone down to 10 men and we conceded a penalty.”

Pepe Reina was at fault for Aguero’s opener by allowing the Argentine’s speculative effort to bounce in under his body.

But Dalglish said: “They changed the ball just before it so maybe that had something to do with it.

“We aren’t going to sit and isolate individuals. Every member of the squad made a mistake in some way shape or form tonight.”

Liverpool FC were without Luis Suarez after reluctantly accepting the striker’s eight-match for racially abusing Manchester United defender Patrice Evra.

But Dalglish believes the full story has not been told of the incident.

“Luis has made a brilliant statement and we stand by that,” he said. “There are a lot of things we would like to say and could say but we don’t want to get into trouble.

“We know what went on, they know what’s not in the report. And that’s important for us.

“It’s very dangerous and unfortunate that people don’t know the whole content of what went on at the hearing.

“It’s up to the club what they want to do next. But I don’t think we are building

a bigger hole, I just think it’s unfortunate we can’t be more forthcoming.”

Of opting not to wait until after next week’s Carling Cup semi-final first leg at City before starting Suarez’s ban, Dalglish added: “He has to serve the games at some point. It was better to get the situation over and done with.

“But I don’t have any concern with Luis playing in England again.”

Dalglish also moved to defend the decision of Liverpool’s players to wear t-shirts backing Suarez before the goalless draw at Wigan Athletic a fortnight ago, the day after the Uruguayan learned of the guilty verdict.

“They wanted to show support for their team-mate,” said the manager.

“What’s wrong with that? I think it’s a fabulous statement to make, support for a guy who is endeared in the dressing room.

“All his friends in the dressing room could speak up for him.”

Meanwhile, City manager Roberto Mancini was unhappy at Barry’s dismissal after fouls on Jay Spearing and later Daniel Agger.

“I didn’t agree with the second card for Gareth Barry,” said the Italian. “I’ve seen worse tackles that that this week.”

Russia tops Canada (AP) – CALGARY, Alberta (AP) — Canada will not play for the gold medal at the world junior hockey championships for the first time in over a decade.

The Canadians lost 6-5 to defending champion Russia in Tuesday night’s second semifinal despite a four-goal burst in the third period. Canada’s streak of playing in every final since 2002 ended. The Canadians were 5-5 in those games.

Russia will meet Sweden in the championship game Thursday after the Swedes beat Finland 3-2 in a shootout earlier Tuesday in the other semifinal. Canada will take on the Finns for the bronze.

The Russians scored five times in the third period to beat Canada 5-3 in last year’s final in Buffalo, N.Y., and now have a chance for their first back-to-back titles since 2002-03.

Russian captain Evgeni Kuznetsov, the lone returning player from last year’s squad, dominated with three goals and an assist.

Max Friberg had a goal and an assist in the third period and then scored the winner in the shootout to give Sweden a berth in the final. William Karlsson added a goal for Sweden.

Friberg also scored the gametying goal and set up the winner in Sweden’s 4-3 overtime win over Russia on Saturday.

“It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to win a gold medal at the world juniors, so of course I’m excited,” said Friberg.
