Gabrielle Myers and Tad Stoner Police have questioned an exboyfriend of Kerran Natalee Baker in connection with her Saturday disappearance, as divers scour the area between Pedro Castle and East End. Toney-Ann Anthony, 18, Ms Baker’s sister, told iNews that one of her sister’s former boyfriends was “obsessive, manipulative and apparently a liar,” repeatedly pestering the family, seeking to interfere in her engagement and threatening to hurt himself if he could not “have her”.

After extensive questioning, she said, he told her he had left the police station “at 5am on Monday morning”, While officers declined to confirm the interrogation, Chief Inspector Angelique Howell said “every person brought to our attention, any person that had any contact with her [Ms Baker}, we have spoken to.” Ms Anthony described several conversations, as recently as Wednesday.

Baby Jordan Campbell Binckes is desperate for life saving open-heart surgery before his tiny world falls apart.

At just a few weeks old the battling newborn is clinging on to his life as his anxious parents wait at his crib-side.

The surgery can be carried out – but at a cost. And now friends of the family have pledged to raise enough money to send the child to Miami for urgent medical treatment.

Tonight at Lone Star on Seven Mile Beach, where Jordan’s mother worked, a silent auction will be held to help pay for the little boy’s operation.

Jordan was born two weeks ago with a congenital heart defect that changes the normal flow of blood through his major organ.

And it’s imperative the surgery is carried out quickly before the defect gets progressively worse.

Yesterday his father, Michael, praised the people of Cayman for the help and support they have received so far.

Mr Binckes said: “We are incredibly humbled by all the help we are getting.

“No big city in the world would give us the help and support that we are receiving from the people of the Cayman Islands.

“It lets us realise what a special place Cayman really is. It is amazing to see everyone pull together to help us, even people we don’t know.

“Jordan is currently on medication and is a very happy little guy and doing all the things he should be but feeding tires him out.

“As he grows and his body gets bigger the situation will progressively get worse as there will be a bigger need for oxygen. That is why it is so important to get the surgery done as soon as we can.”

The heart has two sides, separated by an inner wall called the septum, with each heartbeat the right side of the heart receives oxygen-poor blood from

the body and pumps it to the lungs.

The left side of the heart receives oxygen-rich blood from the lungs and pumps it to the body.

The septum prevents mixing of blood between the two sides of the heart.

However, some babies are born with holes in the upper or lower septum called Atrial Septal Defect (ASD) and Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD).

Jordan was born with both complaints and experts say he will need surgery within the next eight weeks.

Tonight’s event at Lone Star will hopefully raise money towards the ever-creasing medical costs.

Scott McLean, one of the managers at the Bar and Grill said: “The entire staff at Lone Star has become incredibly close to Alexa over the past few months.

“She, in our eyes is the definition of a happy person. Knowing her and Michael for the short time that we have, we in our hearts believe that no persons on this planet will be better parents.”

Alexa, Mother, was working at the Lone Star Bar and Grill until Jordan was born.

iStrange Man arrested for cutting tree PITTSBURGH (AP) — A Pittsburgh man has been arrested after police say he cut down a city-owned tree, which the man claims contributes to basement flooding.

Thirty-nine-year-old David Harper is charged with criminal mischief and possessing an instrument of crime — his neighbour’s chainsaw.

Police tell WTAE-TV that they charged Harper on Thursday after he cut the sidewalk tree nearly in half.

Harper told them he hated the tree because it buckled the sidewalk, causing rain water to flow into his basement.

Remorseful thief returns woman’s items PLAISTOW, N.H. (AP) — Police say an apparently remorseful thief who stole a woman’s wallet in a New Hampshire supermarket showed up at her door days later to return $90 and a GPS, and brought along an apology letter.

The wallet was stolen from the 61-year-old woman’s cart on July 18 in Plaistow. Her wallet was found at a Massachusetts post office.

Then on July 26, the victim heard a knock on her door. A man said he was sorry, returned her belongings, gave her the long letter and fled.

Canadian Government signs deal over two new airport projects Paul Kennedy

Premier Hon. McKeeva Bush has formed a strategic alliance with the Canadian Government to redevelop Owen Roberts International Airport.

Talks will be held between Bush and the Canadian Commercial Corporation (CCC) to establish a plan of action that also includes major work at the Gerrard-Smith International Airport on Cayman Brac.

The CCC, the contracting agency of the Government of Canada, have a six month exclusive deal to conduct due diligence and develop a proposal for the construction and concession agreements for the projects.

The move – announced by Bush at the Legislative Assembly on Wednesday, dismisses previous suggestions the work would be carried out by the Chinese.

Similar agreements have been signed with the China Harbour Company to redevelop the cruise ship terminal and Spotts Jetty.

It was understood they were inline to win the contract for the airport projects until this latest Memorandum of Understanding was signed with Canada.

Mr Bush said: “This mutually beneficial cooperation will stimulate stronger ties between our countries while allowing our Government access to Canadian expertise and capabilities.

“I am pleased to announce that the Cayman Islands Airport Authority has signed a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding with the Canadian Commercial Corporation to establish

a framework for discussions in relation to the re-development of Owen Roberts International Airport on Grand Cayman and GerrardSmith International Airport on Cayman Brac.

“The Corporation has been granted the exclusive right, for a period of six months, commencing August 1, 2011, and subject to mutually agreed extensions, to conduct due diligence and develop a proposal for the construction and concession agreements in respect of the redevelopment of these

airport projects.”

Mr Bush also pledged that Caymanian Companies and local labour will be used as part of the deal.

And he said he hopes work will start on the projects by 2012.

He added: “As part of this MOU, the Corporation will utilize the services of Canadian Technical companies whose financial and managerial capabilities have been subjected to due diligence by the Canadian Government.

“Caymanian Companies and labour will of course be utilized.

“The Cayman Islands Government in conjunction with the Cayman Islands Airport Authority will now enter into the process and dialogue with the Canadian Commercial Corporation to facilitate the successful completion of negotiations that could result in the commencement of the redevelopment of our two international airports in 2012.”

The CCC is midway through constructing the new Quito International Airport in Ecuador.

What really is an Android?

One of the most recent additions to the Tech Dictionary is “Android” which can be easily defined as “an operating software”. Like Apple’s iOS, Android operating software focuses on efficiency and enhancing the features of mobile devices such as cell phones and tablets.

In 2005, Android, an infant company, was acquired by Google and has since produced a flexible, upgradeable system. The debut Android platform phone, the ‘HTC Dream’, was released in 2008. Brac affordable homes on track

Twelve more affordable houses are to be built on Cayman Brac.

The Sister Islands Affordable Housing Development Corporation (SIAHDC) will apply for planning approval this week, to build eight homes at the West End site and four at Watering Place, said Board Chairman Christine Maltman.

Publishing the application forms and other documents as well as contacting applicants who have already submitted applications will follow.

Working closely with the Ministry of District Administration, Works, Land and Agriculture, SIAHDC is preparing documents for the construction tendering process while the housing administrator’s post has been advertised. “We are on track to begin construction.” Ms. Maltman noted.

Expressing pleasure at the progress of this third construction phase, Minister the Hon. Juliana O’Connor-Connolly, JP said, “I laud the board and Ms. Maltman for staying focused so that construction of affordable housing on Cayman Brac can re-start soon.”

During the December 2008 and April 2010 construction phases, a total of eight homes were completed.

The Minister emphasised that her ministry continues to promote individual home-ownership at the best possible cost. “Given the context of current global economic conditions, I am delighted the board has risen to the challenge of providing construction under prudent financial management,” she commented.

“I spoke with him three times [Wednesday], “ Ms Anthony said.

“He said he saw her [last week on] Thursday and Saturday. He saw her at 12:30pm when she was leaving work. The last time he spoke with her was at 7:30pm, after she left the supermarket, which is strange.

“Based on the conversations, he was manipulative and obsessive. He cut keys to her house and car,” she said.

“One time she and her friends were at her house and he came up and opened the door and went in,” Ms Anthony said.

“He tried to break up her engagement. I never met him but I know him. He has a son with my aunts’ friend. My parents have met him.”

Ms Baker was last seen publicly at 7pm on Saturday as she entered Fosters Food Fair near the airport.

Groceries were subsequently found on her kitchen counter during a Sunday police search of her premises.

“Saturday was the last time our mom spoke to her. She had sent money for me a few days before and was saying the money should be here [Jamaica],” Ms Anthony said.

“We last talked on Thursday via email and text,” she said of her sister.

After he was questioned, the former boyfriend was released by police without charge.

Chief Inspector John Jones said police “had no one in custody, have not arrested anyone”, and conceded “we are not any closer. No one has come forward with any assistance after the Foster’s at 7pm on Saturday night.”

Meanwhile, Ms Baker’s parents, Sarah Anthony and Wilmot Anthony, pleaded for any information.

Verging on tears, Mrs Anthony said “I am begging the people of the Cayman Islands, please, if you see, hear or know anything”, to come forward.

“This is my first child and I am here to know what went wrong, to know where she is. I am her mother.

She is my child, Please someone tell me something. I need her,” she said.

Mr Anthony, a Cayman Islands’ tour-bus driver and employee at Hurley’s between 1999 and March this year, echoed the remarks.

“Everyone knows I’m her daddy,” he said, “and 95% of the people

here know me. Put yourself in our position. If you know or see anything call me. If you are scared to talk to the police, talk to me.

“It is now five days going on six, and we can’t eat, we can’t sleep. I am hoping for the best, but bracing for the worst,” he said, offering his telephone number.

Detective Inspector Marlon Bodden said police had expanded their search as marine units and divers scoured the area between Pedro Castle, where a bloodstain on the rocky shoreline and Ms Baker’s car and keys were found, and East End. While saying evidence was still under forensic examination, he virtually conceded that police had accepted the waterfront bloodstain belonged to Ms Baker.

“We are back in the water,” he said, “and looking at the drift pattern, the ebb and flow of the tides, so there is a lot of work going on. We cannot underestimate that activity with the depth of the currents, which present a significant risk to officers. We are leaving no stone unturned.”

Am I the only one confused?

Colin Wilson We reported yesterday (4) that no work has started on the Spotts Jetty and has been delayed indefinitely. Premier McKeeva Bush reversed his earlier statements that said a start on the jetty would be made late July. “We are waiting for final contracts and some plans to be finalised,” he said.

The China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC), the chief contractor for the $3 million project, told us they hadn’t even submitted construction plans. That seems a long way from being ‘finalized.’

Also yesterday, Mr. Bush announced in the Legislative Assembly (LA) that the Canadian Commercial Corporation (Canada’s official international contracting agency) would find Canadian companies with the capabilities to take on the project of redeveloping the Owen Robert’s airport. We were all led to believe before this announcement that CHEC would be executing

this work. Mr. Bush also announced in the LA that this Canadian Corp. had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Cayman Islands Airports Authority (CIAA). When asked by the opposition when the MOU would be a public document the premier said, “I don’t know. It was signed by the CIAA. I’m just a humble minister.” He also intimated that the CIAA might never release the document as it might contain sensitive material.

As for the speculation that CHEC instigated by comments he himself had made, Mr. Bush said, “There never was an agreement.”

Unfortunately, it is all these confusing statements and secrecy issues that gives rise to most of the negative blogs and comments expressed by an ever-increasing skeptical public.

Tropical Storm drenches Haiti, Dominican Republic PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) — Tropical Storm Emily hovered off the south coast of Haiti on Thursday, causing flooding, damaging hundreds of homes and threatening greater misery for multitudes living in tent camps or the flood-prone countryside.

The storm’s heavy rains prompted the government of the neighboring Dominican Republic to move at least 1,600 people because of the threat of flooding and mudslides.

Emily dropped more than 5 inches (140 millimeters) around the southwestern Dominican city of Barahona and an equal amount was still expected in the area, said Miguel Campusano, a forecaster with the Dominican meteorology office.

In Haiti, about 600,000 people are still in flimsy tents and shanties because of the January 2010 earthquake, strong winds whipped through palm trees in the capital while heavier rains fell further north, damaging homes as well as a cholera treatment center, said Marie Alta Jean-Baptiste, the country’s civil defense director. But there

were no reports of deaths.

In the capital, which has most of those left homeless by the earthquake, the rain was relatively light so far, but the government evacuated a few families from a camp for quake victims to a school that is being used as a storm shelter, said Jean-Joseph Edgard, an administrator in Haiti’s Civil Protection Department.

The storm seemed to pause Thursday morning, then resumed a slow march to the west-northwest off the coast of the island Haiti shares with the Dominican Republic, and

forecasters said they expected it to hit Haiti later in the day. Emily had maximum sustained winds of 50 mph (85 kph).

Forecasters said the storm was likely to cross eastern Cuba on Friday and might touch Florida on Saturday, though the projected track would keep its center offshore.

John Cangialosi, a hurricane specialist with the hurricane center, said up to 20 inches of rain was possible in isolated high-elevation areas. That is enough to cause serious problems in a country prone to catastrophic flooding.

29,000 children killed in Somalia famine NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — The drought and famine in Somalia have killed more than 29,000 children under the age of 5, according to U.S. estimates, the first time such a precise death toll has been released related to the Horn of Africa crisis.

The United Nations has said previously that tens of thousands of people have died in the drought, the worst in Somalia in 60 years. The U.N. says 640,000 Somali children are acutely malnourished, a statistic that suggests the death toll of small children will rise.

Nancy Lindborg, an official with

the U.S. government aid arm, told a congressional committee in Washington on Wednesday that the U.S. estimates that more than 29,000 children under the age of five have died in the last 90 days in southern Somalia. That number is based on nutrition and mortality surveys verified by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The U.N. on Wednesday declared three new regions in Somalia famine zones, bringing the total number to five. Out of a population of roughly 7.5 million, the U.N. says 3.2 million Somalis are in need of immediate

Jamaica slowly started gaining increasing independence from the United Kingdom in 1958. The first steps for this were becoming a province in the Federation of the West Indies and then a Federation among the British West Indies.

The Jamaica National Flag was first raised on Independence Day, August 6, 1962 and it signifies the birth of the nation.

The flag brings to mind memories of past achievements and gives inspiration towards further success.

It is flown on many triumphant occasions, showing the pride that Jamaicans have in their country and in the flag itself.

CALL 926-4415 Emerald Sound opponents said yesterday they would appeal Thursday’s official approval for the multi-million-dollar housing development, and would try to persuade Cabinet to refuse the project.

Speaking after the Central Planning Authority (CPA) nod to the canal-side 81-house development in South Sound Road, Katrina Jurn, a member of the 200-member ProtectSouthSound group said the decision was “very disappointing, but not shocking”.

Lamenting the “narrow focus” of the decision, which opponents claim threatens the area with flooding and pollution, Ms Jurn said they would approach the Planning Appeals Tribunal in hopes of reversing yesterday’s approval.

“ProtectSouthSound is working on behalf of 1,100 objectors [to the plan]. We have high hopes that Cabinet will deny an application for a coastal works licence, and while the Central Planning Authority looks at extremely narrow criteria, the Cabinet is people we elect to represent our interests. They will look at the wider impact and at the environment,” she said.

A Wednesday-morning gathering of the 13-member panel heard arguments from representatives of the objectors and from Emerald Sound architect Burns Conolly and developer R.C. Estates Ltd chief Rene Hislop.

Burns Conolly A press release yesterday from The Burns Conolly Group said R.C. Estates “understands from the Planning Department that the application before the CPA on August 3 has been approved”.

“The low-density development of approximately 81 single-family home lots and 160 apartments, presented a detailed submission to the CPA reviewing all of the objectors concerns and commented ion government reviews of the project as well,” the release said.

The controversial proposal is for a series of 6-foot-deep canals winding among a series of homes, an apartment block and marina, set on 90 landscaped acres raised eight feet above sea level and surrounded by drainage facilities and an access channel cut through South Sound Road to open water.

The road will be moved 80 feet

inland, providing jogging and bicycling paths, while a bridge will cross the new channel.

Objections to the project, initially proposed at least five years ago, pinpoint flooding and storm-surge risks, inadequate flushing of the canals, insufficient drainage, and waters fouled by run-off, pollution and increased boat traffic.

A series of meetings by various opposition groups such as ILoveCayman and ProtectSouthSound have been countered by Mr Conolly’s own efforts to explain the project and mitigate public concerns.

After yesterday’s CPA approval, he told iNews that he would start detailed design work. Construction would start as soon as Planning officials panel gave the nod to R.C. Estates.

“We now go into the detailed design phase and meeting any CPA requirements,” he said. “We can begin construction immediately.

We will have to await the Planning Department’s approval to begin.”

He declined to say how much the development would cost or how many jobs would be created, saying only that “significant infrastructural works of building a new road and bridge would cost “millions of dollars” and yield “over CI$45 million to government in direct fees and import duties over the next 10 years tad.stoner@ieyenews.com

Celebrations’ Event Planner, Jessica Bodden said, “Celebrations are working together with the Marriott to display rental items and different themes, either for Christmas or for all events all year round. We have Crystal Christmas, Tropical Haven and Romantic Splendor here on display.” she said.

Crystal Christmas felt cool - even in summer in the Cayman Islands. There were large spheres, each glowing with a blue light, and an all blue Christmas tree. Four of the blue balls were grouped together, with a sheet of glass on the top to form what looked like a table made of ice. White

sofas grouped around the table completed the cold frost and snow feeling.

In contrast, the other part of the ballroom was filled with rich, warm reds and oranges. “This is the Romantic Splendor theme– there’s lace overlays and lots of roses and red candlelight.” Ms Bodden explained.

There was also a more modern twist on the traditional Christmas feel. “Instead of using our regular chairs, we used our lounge seats covered in orange material.”

Ms. Bodden said. Little orange trees too in the background, gave the traditional Christmas décor that tropical twist.

Even Chaplain Gaston looked in for a moment, and staid an hour; and later in the evening the tall form of Père Michaux appeared, clad in a furred mantle, a black silk cap crowning his silver hair. Tita immediately left her place and went to meet him, bending her head with an air of deep reverence.

“See the child—how theatrical!” said Mrs. Cromer.

“Yes. Still, the Romanists do believe in all kinds of amusements, and even ask a blessing on it,” said the lieutenant’s wife.

“It was not that—it was the little air and attitude of devoutness that I meant. See the puss now!”

But the puss was triumphant at last. One of the younger officers had noted her solemn little salutation in front of the priest, and now approached to ask her to dance, curious to see what manner of child this small creature could be. Aisles were kept open leading to the door, to the windows, and to the hearth, where the ragged armchair stood, and where there was a small parade ground of open floor; but everywhere else the printed thoughts held sway.

The old fire-place was large and deep, and here burned night and day, throughout the winter, a fire which made the whole room bright; add to this the sunshine streaming through the broad, low, uncurtained windows, and you have the secret of the cheerfulness in the very face of a barren lack of everything we are accustomed to call comfort.

The key to beating most cancers is early detection. If you have a concern, make an appointment to see your physician now.

Various cancer screening tests can detect abnormalities before you may be able to notice them or before they begin to cause symptoms. Prevention strategies focus on modifying environmental and lifestyle risk factors which can promote cancer. 50 percent of cancers are preventable.

The following are multiple cancer risk factors: TOBACCO USE Tobacco use is the most preventable cause of cancer, and accounts for 21 percent of worldwide total cancer deaths. Approximately onehalf of all smokers die of a tobacco related disease.

Tobacco acts on multiple stages of carcinogenesis: it delivers carcinogens directly to tissues, causes irritation and inflammation, and interferes with the body’s natural protective barriers. Smoking cessation leads to reduced risk of most tobacco-related diseases and a decrease in all cause mortality.

EXCESS SUN EXPOSURE Over 1 million cases of skin cancer, including basal cell and squamous cell carcinoma, are diagnosed each year.

Radiation from the sun is the primary cause of both types of skin cancer.

All individuals should limit the time spent in the sun, especially between the hours of 10 am and 3 pm, wear hats, sunglasses, and other protective clothing, and use sunscreen. Because the majority of lifetime sun exposure usually occurs during childhood and adolescence, protective behaviors early in life will provide the greatest benefit.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY Decreased physical activity appears to increase the risk for cancer. It is estimated that sedentary lifestyle is associated with 5 percent of cancer deaths

EXCESS WEIGHT Excess weight and obesity are associated with an increase in the risk of multiple cancers including colorectal, postmenopausal breast, endometrial, renal, and esophageal cancer. There are also direct links between obesity and the following cancers: pancreas, thyroid, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, leukemia, and myeloma.

Obesity has been estimated to cause 20 percent of all cancers.

ALCOHOL Excess alcohol consumption increases the risk of multiple cancers.

INFECTION It is estimated that 17 percent of all new cancers worldwide are due to infections.

Multiple links between viral agents and cancer have been established: • Human papillomavirus (HPV) with cervical and other anogenital cancers as well as squamous cell cancers of the head and neck • Hepatitis B (HBV) and C (HCV) with hepatocellular carcinoma • Human T-cell lymphotropic virus (HTLV-I) with adult T cell leukemia • Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV-I) with Kaposi sarcoma and non-Hodgkin lymphoma For some viruses, interventions are available to prevent or delay progression to cancer after infection.

Cervical cancer screening has dramatically reduced the incidence of cervical cancer where screening is widely available.

SCREENING METHODS AND RECOMMENDATIONS Most preventive screenings for cancers can be done during your routine annual physical at your GP’s office.

Breast cancer — Women between the ages 40 to 75 years old should go for regular mammograms also this applies to younger women with family histories of cancer. It is suggested that all women undergo regular clinical breast examinations (CBE).

Some breast cancers are not detected

by mammography; a positive CBE requires further investigation, even if the mammogram is negative.

Cervical cancer: Screening for cervical cancer is routinely done by cytological examination (PAP smear).The best frequency of screening for cervical cancer is not clear, but for women with repeatedly negative findings, screening every 2 years is generally sufficient.

Colorectal cancer: Regular screening should be initiated at age 50 for patients with an average risk for colorectal cancer, and earlier for those with increased risk. Several screening strategies are available, and guidelines differ somewhat in recommended testing, one of the most widely accepted being colonoscopy.Patients should participate in the decision of which test to undergo.

Lung cancer: Avoidance and cessation of tobacco use could potentially reduce the incidence and mortality from lung cancer by about 90 percent.

Prostate cancer: We suggest that screening be performed with prostate specific antigen (PSA) tests at least every 2 to 4 years. We suggest that screening be performed until age 75.

Melanoma is also preventable by taking precautions when exposed to the sun. The importance of wearing sunscreen cannot be emphasized enough.

The most effective way to prevent cancer is to listen to your body and to go for a physical every year. You know your body better than anyone else. If something doesn’t look or feel right, have it seen to- it might just save your life.

What a find, what a treasure Part Two Joan Wilson

Some years after hurricane Ivan almost wiped us out, I was cleaning up our garden and finding little green weeds or whatever they were coming up out of the ground (I could almost hear them sighing ‘at last air’). I later discovered they weren’t weeds at all but beautiful shade trees like the neem, eucalyptus, papaya, bottlebrush, naseberry, and oh so many more I could mention.

I took good care of them because most of them I hadn’t seen in my garden before. In due course I took them up and transplanted them in the Elmslie Church yard. I watered them and took good care of them – they were special – Ivan had given them to me you see. Every day for weeks I went out to the Church to water the plants and wash the windows and walls down cleaning up all the rubbish on each visit from the areas I was planting. Then the most amazing thing was to happen. As I cleaned the area back of the Church near the northeastern door (with my bare hands and fingers) I suddenly felt something very hard in the ground just where I was weeding.

I thought it to be unusually hard and sharp. So I kept digging gently around it and I suddenly realized it was the corner of something.

So I kept on gently digging and removing the earth from whatever it was. I suddenly got a sight of the colour of it. It was grey, it was square and by the time I finished

digging, I suddenly realized I had found a very important tooled piece of stone. Of course I couldn’t lift it so I called my helper and he called three other gentlemen who were working nearby at Margaritaville.

To my great surprise when we lifted it up it was an untarnished, well preserved marble plaque, in perfect condition. There was not a mark on it except what someone had originally planned for it. Why it was abandoned only the good Lord knows. Anyway, in one corner was carved the likeness of a church like Elmslie, and in the opposite corner was carved a boat. What a treasure!

I’m sure you will agree these treasures are not found very often. If you visit Elmslie Memorial Church you will see the finished product on the right hand wall by the door

as you enter. It now commemorates the actual builder of the church.

On another occasion I was on a trip to Jamaica with our Womens’ Fellowship for a conference. We’re in a queue going out of the airport to board a bus when all of a sudden my foot kicked a lump of marl – I almost tripped. However, I took a good look at the lump of marl and the rest is history – another treasure. A lovely ruby and diamond ring was embedded in the marl. It didn’t take me long to get that out, clean it up and it fits my middle finger just right. WHAT A FIND!!!!

All the world’s an island One Good Thing Carol-Ann Rudy We all have days when we walk around with the feeling there is a cloud hanging over our heads like the character in a mid-twentieth century comic strip called Li’l Abner. The character’s name was Joe Bfstplk or something close to it and the cartoonist illustrated Joe walking around with an actual gray cloud hanging over his head, a graphic illustration for the rest of us when it seems trouble follows us all day.

Nate Ransom just couldn’t get a break one day last week. He burned the toast, his fried egg was like rubber, the milk had soured, he had no clean underwear and worse yet, dropped his toothbrush in the toilet. On the way to work, his trusty car blew a gasket. While standing beside it on a busy highway, a police officer pulled up behind him and ticketed him for a smashed taillight he’d been meaning to take care of. After a tow truck hauled him and his car to a service station, he caught a taxi to work only to find out he’d left his wallet at home. After practically signing away his firstborn, he was finally free to walk into his place of employment where he was greeted with cool stares. All day long it was a game of catch-up, a day of apologies for everything being late. On the phone with customers, it seemed every one of them was crusty and having a really bad, really horrible day. Nate figured his misfortunes were rubbing off on them.

His bad luck dogged him; getting a drink from the water cooler, the plastic bottle on top of it picked that time to be almost empty. He had the misfortune to nudge it and sent it flying, spilling what was left in it all over the tile floor. The keyboard of a computer on a nearby desk managed to get doused too,

All day Breakfast & Lunch making Miss Sally Thornton very unhappy. Glaring at him, he knew his dreams of asking her for a date were dashed. Nevertheless, he got paper towels and did his best to clean up the keyboard and the mess on the floor.

Nate knew things couldn’t get any worse, but he was wrong. He got a ride home with a coworker, the only stroke of luck that day.

His key stuck in the lock of his door so he broke a window to get in, setting off the security alarm, and setting off an elderly neighbor. The police arrived, but the situation was quickly resolved when they begrudgingly acknowledged he was a legitimate tenant.

He grabbed his wallet containing his ATM card and took off running six blocks to his bank.

That business completed, he turned towards home only to find himself in a sudden downpour.

By the time he arrived home, he was soaked, cold and shivering.

Climbing back in through the window, he wrapped himself in a towel, fixed hot tea, sat by his broken window and thought about his thoroughly miserable day. He felt like a failure.

Warming up, he went to spend a little time answering email on his computer. In it was a message

from Sally, asking if she could stop by. Answering as fast as his fingers could type, he said yes.

A short time later, there was a knock at the door. He opened it to find a tearful Sally. He invited her in and asked what was wrong.

“I’ve had a terrible day, Nate.

Everything went wrong for me; I dropped my purse on a sidewalk and lost half my stuff down a storm drain, I got to work and my boss yelled at me for something that wasn’t my fault, and I lost important documents when my computer crashed.”

Nate consoled her. “I’m so sorry to hear that. Maybe tomorrow will be a much better day. It was a bad one for me too.”

She looked up at him and smiled shyly. “But Nate, there’s something you should know….”

“Yes?” “You were the one good thing in my whole day. You smiled even though it was a bad day for you.”

Suddenly, Sally became his one good thing. The rest of the day didn’t matter after all.

Agatha Christie, the cheese in the ‘Mousetrap’ Georgina Wilcox She was born 15th September 1890 and died on the 12th January 1976. She has given me the greatest pleasure, leaving me tranquil and craving for more when I am through devouring one of her countless tomes. She is a philosopher of the mundane, a scholar of death, and an exquisite chronicler of decay and decadence. She wrote romances under the name of Mary Westmacott.

She was born Agatha Mary Clarissa Miller and on Christmas Eve 1914 she married Archibald Christie and became Mrs. Agatha Christie, later Dame Agatha Christie. I spend as much time wondering what so mesmerizes me in her pulp fiction as I do trying to decipher her deliciously contorted stratagems.

First, there is the claustrophobia.

Modernity revolves around the rapid depletion of our personal spaces - from pastures and manors to cubicles and studio apartments.

Christie - like Edgar Ellen Poe before her - imbues even the most confined rooms with endless opportunities for vice and malice, where countless potential scenarios can and do unfold kaleidoscopically. A Universe of plots and countervailing subplots that permeate even the most cramped of her locations. It is nothing short of consummate magic.

Then there is the realization of the ubiquity of our pathologies. In Christie’s masterpieces, even the champions of good are paragons of mental illness. Hercules Poirot, the quintessential narcissist, selfgrooming, haughty, and delusional.

Miss Marple, a schizoid busybody, who savors neither human company, nor her inevitable encounters with an intruding world. Indeed, it is deformity that gifts these two with their eerily penetrating insights into the infirmities of others.

Do not forget the death of innocence. Dame Agatha’s detective novels are quaint, set in an Imperialist type Britain that is no more and likely had never existed. Technologies make their debut: the car, the telephone, the radio, and electric light. The very nature of evil is transformed from

the puerile directness of the highway robber and the passion killer - to the scheming, cunning, and disguised automatism of her villains. Crime in her books is calculated, the outcome of plotting and conspiring, a confluence of unbridled and corrupted appetites and a malignant mutation of individualism. Her opus is a portrait of our age, as it emerged, all bloodied and repellent, from the womb the dying Victorian era.

Christie’s weapons of choice are simple - the surreptitious poison, a stealthy dagger, the cocked revolver, a hideous drowning. Some acquaintance with the sciences of Chemistry and Physics is indispensable, of course.

Archeology comes third. But Christie’s main concerns are human nature and morality. The riddles that she so fiendishly posits cannot be solved without taking both into account.

As Miss Marple keeps insisting throughout her numerous adventures, people are the same everywhere, regardless of their social standing, wealth, or upbringing.

The foibles, motives, and likely actions of protagonists - criminals as well as victims - are inferred by Marple from character studies of her village folks back home. Human nature is immutable and universal is Christie’s message.

Not so morality. Formal justice is a slippery concept, often opposed to the natural sort. Life is in shades of grey.

especially when they serve to rectify past wrongs or prevent a greater evil.

Some victims had it coming. Crime is part of a cycle of karmic retribution.

The detective’s role is to restore order to a chaotic situation, to interpret reality for us (in an inevitable final chapter), and to administer true and impartial justice, not shackled by social or legalistic norms.

‘Nothing is as it seems’ is perhaps Christie’s greatest allure. Beneath the polished, petite-bourgeois, rule-driven surface, lurks another world, replete with demons and with angels, volcanic passions and stochastic drives, the mirrors and the mirrored, where no ratio rules and no laws obtain.

Catapulted into this nightmarish, surrealistic landscape, like the survivors of a shipwreck, we wander, bedazzled, readers and detectives, heroes and villains, damsels and their lovers, doomed to await the denouement.

When that moment comes, redeemed by reason, we emerge, reassured, into our reinstated, ordered, Before Christ(ie) existence.

Her novels are the substance of our dreams, woven from the fabric of our fears, an open invitation to plunge into our psyches and courageously confront the abyss. Hence Christie’s irresistibility - her utter acquaintance with our deepest quiddity. Who can forgo such narcissistic pleasure? Not Georgina, for sure! georgina.wilcox@ieyenews.com

The end of the school year is here and savvy moms and dads by now have made all the arrangements for summer.

Summer camps and leisurely days at the pool or beach are just a few of the summer rituals for many families.

However if you're tempted to let your child play outdoors for even a few minutes without proper sun protection, you might want to think twice.

Adolescence and childhood are critical periods during which exposure to UV radiation is more likely to contribute to skin cancer in later life. Children with fair skin, blond or red hair and blue or green eyes are at the highest risk of sunburn.

But darker-skinned children also need sun protection. With this in mind, it’s important that parents teach their children how to enjoy fun in the sun safely.

LIMIT OUTDOOR PLAYTIME BETWEEN 10A.M. AND 4P.M.

Apply a thick, even coat to all exposed areas 20 - 30 minutes before your child goes out in the sun. Choose a sunscreen with SPF (Sun Protection Factor) 15 or higher. Make sure it's labeled "broad spectrum," which means it blocks both UVA and UVB sunlight. For your little ones, sunscreen that contains zinc oxide or titanium dioxide should be selected as these compounds are less irritating than others. Sunscreen sticks are best for the face because they are sweat proof and less likely to drip. Don't forget nose, ears, hands, feet, shoulders, and behind the neck; lips can also burn, so apply a lip balm with SPF protection. Reapply sunscreen every 2 to 3 hours, or after sweating or swimming.

COVER FROM HEAD TO TOE. Wearing protective clothing and hats is one of the primary ways of warding off UV damage. When wet, light coloured clothing transmits just as much sunlight as bare skin. Keep your kids covered with dark colours, long sleeves, and pants whenever possible. And don't forget the accessories: sunglasses with UV protection to guard against burned corneas, and hats to prevent sunburned scalps and faces.

Protective clothing, hats with wide brims, and sunglasses are just as important for babies. At the beach, bring along a large umbrella.

Parents, you are the best teacher by practicing sun safety yourself. If your child sees you following sun safety rules, he'll take them for granted and follow suit. Teach every member of the family how to protect their skin and eyes. With proper supervision, children can learn to protect themselves and enjoy summer fun without sacrificing the health of their skin.

Avoid unnecessary exposure when the sun's rays are at their strongest. Even on cloudy or cooler days, ultraviolet (UV) rays remain strong. Shady spots can be just as tricky because of reflected light. If your child is playing outdoors during these hours, make sure to apply ample sunscreen.

WATCH OUT FOR MEDICATIONS. Some medications increase the skin's sensitivity to the sun, so make sure to ask your doctor whether your child may be at risk. Prescription antibiotics and acne medications are the most notorious culprits, but when in doubt, ask.

CHICAGO (AP) — Yankees star Alex Rodriguez will be interviewed by Major League Baseball as part of its investigation of his involvement in illegal poker games.

Rodriguez also faced questions about his gambling habits in 2005, when the Daily News reported he attended games at an underground poker club in New York. The slugging third baseman later acknowledged “it wasn’t the right thing to do,” and checked with MLB before holding a charity poker tournament the following year.

Now baseball wants to talk to him again.

“We take this very seriously and have been investigating this matter since the initial allegation,” MLB said Wednesday in a statement.

“As part of the investigation, the commissioner’s office will interview Mr. Rodriguez.”

Rodriguez is on the disabled list and wasn’t with the team Wednesday night in Chicago.

“I don’t really have any comment on that,” manager Joe Girardi said before the Yankees’ 18-7 victory over the White Sox. “Let baseball handle those things.”

Star Magazine reported last month that several people saw A-Rod playing in games hosted at Hollywood hotels and residences. His publicist denied that Rodriguez participated.

Rodriguez’s name is not mentioned in any court filings in relation to the games.

iSports Footballer, 34, dies of suspected heart attack Japanese footballer Naoki Matsuda has died two days after he collapsed on the training pitch with a suspected heart attack.

The 34-year-old, who represented Japan at the 2002 World Cup, was rushed to hospital on Tuesday.

He collapsed during a training session with his club, Matsumoto Yamaga, and never regained consciousness.

After an initial diagnosis of heat stroke, he was later confirmed to have had a cardiac arrest. He was unconscious on his arrival at the hospital and showed no response to heart massage.

‘I never got to know Matsuda directly but knew what a great player he was having watched him in the J-League last year,’ Japan coach Alberto Zaccheroni said.

“Chances are really good we’re going to keep him in overnight for observation,” Burkholder said. “He’s there with his wife.

The only thing that we’ve really ruled out, he didn’t have any bleeding in his brain or anything like that. The bleeding that some of you saw was that he bit his tongue, they’ve confirmed that, and they’re running more tests on him right now.

“But he’s very stable. He wants to come back to training camp, but he’s over there being observed, but that’s pretty normal for somebody who has a seizure. Standard protocol says keep him in overnight to watch him and keep some monitors on him and whatnot.”

Patterson’s agent JR Ricket said in a statement that the player is “in no pain and doing well.”

iSports Edwards signs contract extension with Fenway Carl Edwards spurned an offer from Joe Gibbs Racing, and signed a multi-year contract extension with current team Roush Fenway Racing.

The deal was announced yesterday and puts Edwards, the current Sprint Cup Series points leader, in position to compete for his first Cup championship.
