Daring thieves dressed as police officers during the latest armed robbery in Cayman.

Wearing black jackets with the word “POLICE” emblazoned on the back, two men threatened staff at the Texaco gas station on Eastern Avenue.

Monday night’s heist is the latest robbery to hit Cayman. Last Thursday gunmen held up Casanova

by The Sea as diners ate.

And last week Amwescay Fashion was robbed. A woman was pistol whipped during a hold-up in Bodden Town and a man was threatened with a gun in Eastern Avenue for his jewellery.

Now the President of the Cayman Islands Chamber of Commerce has warned that the cost of living could dramatically rise if the robberies are not stopped.

Monday night’s gas station robbery happened around 10pm.

Two masked men entered the premises wearing gloves and the fake police jackets.

Making people look and feel good about themselves is what 64-year old hair and makeup artist Jimmie DeLoach has been doing most of his life. And he loves it.

“It’s a part of me. I’ve been doing this for more than 35 years now.

I love making people pretty and special,” he says.

Another thing Mr. DeLoach loves is his new home in the Cayman Islands and in addition to working in his regular job Mr. DeLoach has used his unique talent and experience to give what he can to the local community.

“I just love giving to Cayman.

I’ve been living here for two years and unfortunately I can’t stay here forever but I do I want to leave part of me here, ” he said.

As soon as Mr. DeLoach, who currently works at La Mer Spa, in the Marriott Beach Resort, arrived in Cayman, he found that his deft skills were in plenty of demand. Since then he has been volunteering with a difference.

“I did the Zombie Driftwood movie makeup. There were lots of special effects prosthetic pieces, like an 8-ball coming out of actor Colin Wilson’s head in the bar scene… when he became a zombie,” he said.

“I started working with theatre productions and children’s workshops.

I wanted to teach them how to make their own rubber noses and prosthetic pieces for their faces to become rabbits and squirrels and weasels. It was just wonderful.”

and beauty has always been part of Mr. DeLoach’s life.

“My father and grandfather had hair salons in Macon, Georgia. I started following in their footsteps, doing hair and hairstyling for men and women. Then I got interested in amateur theatre and doing makeup and time-period hairstyling. I’ve probably done makeup for hundreds of plays,” he said.

Like all artists who strive for excellence, new doors began to open for Mr. DeLouch.

“I was also a reconstructive makeup artist for 25 years, restoring accident victims at funeral homes. I got called to work at funeral homes in Florida, Alabama, and many different cities in Georgia, because of my reputation,” he said.

It was experience that has come in helpful since moving here. Working from photographs of injury victims provided by St. Matthew’s medical college, Mr. DeLoach was able to makeup medical students so they looked just like real-life accident victims, so that other students could see what different injuries looked

like and get used to them.

“I was also able to do the moulage (a French word meaning “moulding”) makeup for the Cayman Island Airport Authority’s First Responders training – I made people look like they’d been in a plane crash,” he said.

From gruesome back to glamour, and Mr. DeLoach is excited with the idea of working with 20 of Cayman’s top models for the forthcoming ‘Fresh!’

Colorado dog celebrated for having such long ears BHarbor has over two feet of ears. Does that make him a 6-foot dog?

Probably not. But yesterday, the black-and-tan coonhound from Boulder, Colo., gets the 2012 Guinness World Records title for “longest ears on a living dog.�

His left ear is 12.25 inches long and his right is 13.5 inches long.

Owner Jennifer Wert says when her 8-year-old was a puppy, he would trip on his ears and roll down stairs.

These days, Wert says people often stop them to ask questions, take photos or tug on his ears.

Tigger, a bloodhound from Illinois who died in 2009, still holds the record for longest ears ever. One was 13.5 inches long, the other 13.75 inches long.

Coonhounds use their ears to help with scent.

Meanwhile a Connecticut man faces several felony charges after being arrested inside a dog pound where his Italian greyhound had spent the weekend.

Walther Scovish had the dog, Missy, taken from him on Sept. 3 after Scovish was pulled over and charged with possession of heroin.

Police say they found Scovish inside the pound just before 6 a.m. on Monday after an alarm went off. Police say Scovish told them his dog had special needs.

Witnesses say the pair were “quiet as lambs” and, if they had not heard the shop assistant’s scream, they would not have even known a robbery was taking place.

The pump attendant, who asked not to be named, said: “They were very professional.

“The entire robbery took just about 3 to 4 minutes to happen. The men came in really silent like lambs.

“It was a small sum of money in the register. The men just ran away with the cash register, I don’t even know if they put it into a bag.

“The men had one of the cashiers in a corner and she just kept on screaming.”

James O’Neill, President of the Chamber of Commerce, said: “The recent robberies are much bolder and dangerous in nature and we must do everything within our power to support the police so that they can capture the criminals and bring them to justice.

“We also need to increase policing and security measures in areas that have high visitor traffic so that we disrupt the criminals from continuing their illegal ways.

NASA launching twin moon probes to measure gravity CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — Four decades after landing men on the moon, NASA is returning to Earth’s orbiting companion, this time with a set of robotic twins that will measure lunar gravity while chasing one another in circles.

Technicians add a payload fairing to the Gravity Recovery And Interior Laboratory (GRAIL) booster.

By creating the most precise lunar gravity map ever, scientists hope to figure out what’s beneath the lunar surface, all the way to the core. The orbiting probes also will help pinpoint the best landing sites for future explorers, whether human or mechanical.

Near-identical twins Grail-A and Grail-B — short for Gravity Recovery and Interior Laboratory — are due to blast off Thursday aboard an unmanned rocket.

Although launched together, the two washing machine-size spacecraft will separate an hour into the flight and travel independently to the moon.

It will be a long, roundabout trip — three to four months — because of the small Delta II rocket used to boost the spacecraft.

NASA’s Apollo astronauts used the mighty Saturn V rocket, which covered the approximately 240,000 miles to the moon in a mere three days.

NASA’s Grail twins will travel more than 2 million miles to get to the moon under this slower but more economical plan.

In an effort that will continue for another two weeks, community activists have already collected hundreds of signatures on a petition to Governor Duncan Taylor, seeking to stop the closure of West Bay Road.

A coalition of West Bay residents’ groups are gathering endorsements on the two-page document, asking Mr Taylor “to preserve the West Bay Road in its entirety in perpetuity as a public vehicular roadway for the people of the Cayman Islands.”

“We have already sent a letter to the governor, outlining our concerns and telling him that this petition is coming,” said Alice Mae Coe, leader of Concerned Citizens, an informal, but tight-knit group of district residents.

“A cover letter will go with the petition, setting out the details of our reasoning because of the road and access to George Town,” she said.

Sentiment has quietly coalesced in the district, opposing plans by the ForCayman Investment Alliance to close a 2,500-foot section of the road – between Trafalgar Place and Yacht Club Drive – and re-route it onto the Esterley Tibbetts Highway, as a precursor to redevelopment of the now-abandoned Marriott Courtyard Hotel.

between Dart Realty and elected United Democratic Party officials, plans a wide-ranging series of infrastructure, community and housing developments, including refurbishment of the Marriott and creation of at least one, and possibly two, more hotels. The scheme calls for investment of roughly $1.2 billion during the next 30 years, $200 million of which is scheduled for the next 12 months.

“People are out there getting pages and pages of signatures,” Ms Coe told iNews, “It is ongoing. We are coming on strong and we will aggressively continue the drive.

We have put people in charge of different areas. We will get into every nook and cranny of Grand Cayman. I already have had two calls from George Town asking to sign the petition, and we haven’t even gone down there yet,” she said.

No date has been set to close the road, but an uneasy coalition has started to crystallise among Ms Coe’s Concerned Citizens Group, community leader and one-time independent candidate Ormond Morgan’s West Bay Action Committee and Captain Brian Ebanks Save Cayman.

Each have separate priorities, but preservation of the West Bay Road along Public Beach is emerging as a common cause.

“This is 2,500 feet of road and Dart is going to build on his

own land anyway,” Ms Coe said, alluding to Dart’s ownership of all the land between the Marriott and the Cayman Islands Yacht Club. “I don’t blame [owner Ken] Dart, he’s a businessman, but this will add thousands of feet of land and it will all become seafront property.”

Opponents – and the Concerned Citizen’s petition -- also cite damage to more than “100 diversified small businesses”, elimination of the last ocean view from the road, restricted access to both Public Beach and the waterfront immediately to the north, potential traffic snarls on the Esterley Tibbetts Highway after accidents or natural disasters, and further commercial development in the area.

Rejecting the concerns, both Mr Bush and Dart have promised full public access to the water, including development of a second, larger public beach, and vastly expanded recreational facilities.

At a 30 August public meeting, Mr Bush went so far as to reject Ms Coe’s efforts: “That little section of the road floods anyhow,” he said.

“You are not going to stop it because it is the right thing for West Bay.” “That is vintage Mac,” Ms Coe said. “These people are our elected representatives and they should not disrespect the people who put them where they are and not ignore what we are saying. We, the electorate, are their bosses.”

We are still keeping an eye on Invest 95L, in the eastern Atlantic about 600 miles to the southwest of the Cape Verde Islands. Rob Lightbown wrote “Environmental conditions are favourable enough for slow development during the rest of this week and this may become a tropical depression or a tropical storm in the next couple of days or so.

“Invest 95L is forecasted to make a general west to west-northwest track over the next 2 to 3 days. After that, the potential track of this system may bring it near the northern Leeward Islands this weekend and everyone in the Leeward Islands and Virgin Islands should closely monitor this system as indications are that it may affect you as a strong tropical storm or a Category 1 hurricane.”

This track will keep Katia east of the US East Coast and the Canadian Maritimes.

Even though Katia will stay well away from the United States and the Canadian Maritimes, it will produce some large swells along the entire US East Coast, Bermuda and the eastern facing beaches of the Bahamas this week. These large swells will cause large surf and dangerous rip currents.

Australian standoff ends with one in custody, girl safe with the man began to crumble, Clifford said.

“Towards the latter part of the time we’ve been here, those negotiations have started to break down and then deteriorate to a stage where police have taken action to break into the premises and take a 52-year-old man into custody,” Clifford said. “He’s currently assisting police with their ongoing inquires.”

SYDNEY (AP) — A man who marched into a Sydney law office with his daughter and said he had a bomb in his backpack was taken into custody Tuesday after a tense, 12-hour standoff with police.

The man’s 12-year-old daughter was released and reunited with her family, New South Wales police said. She was distressed, but otherwise unharmed, police said.

Police Assistant Commissioner Denis Clifford said bomb technicians were examining the backpack to see whether any explosive devices were in it.

Nobel winner urges Japan to abandon nuclear power TOKYO (AP) — Nobel laureate Kenzaburo Oe urged Japan’s new prime minister on Tuesday to halt plans to restart nuclear power plants and instead abandon nuclear energy.

Oe cautioned Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda against prioritising the economy over safety. Noda has said he will allow idled nuclear plants to resume operation when their safety is confirmed.

“The new prime minister seems to think that nuclear power plants are necessary for Japan’s economy, and how to resume their operation is one of his key political agendas,” Oe said. “We must make a big decision to abolish all nuclear plants.”

Oe, who won the Nobel Prize in literature in 1994, said the accident at the Fukushima Dai-ichi power plant six months ago caused the Japanese public to want to reduce their dependence on nuclear power, but that feeling seems to be fading.

He spoke at news conference yesterday about an anti-nuclear petition drive, accompanied by other members of the campaign.

The group, which is demanding that the government decommission aging reactors and promote renewable energy, aims to collect 10 million signatures and submit them to the government next March.

Wildfire destroys nearly 500 homes in Texas BASTROP, Texas (AP) — Calmer winds Tuesday should help firefighters battling a wildfire that has destroyed nearly 500 homes in Central Texas and forced thousands of residents to evacuate to shelters to avoid the blaze, officials said.

Texas Forest Service spokeswoman Victoria Koenig said it is too early to say how much progress was made fighting the wildfire in Bastrop County overnight, but that there were no winds early Tuesday. The fire enveloped at least 25,000 acres Monday.

The Editor speaks Miami advice

My recent trip to Miami exposed the differences in colin.wilson@ieyenews.com police presence compared to here in the Cayman Islands. Whether the method the Dade County Police Dept. adopts produces better statistics than the RCIPS I do not know, as I am not privy to them. I do know their method makes me, as a tourist there, feel safe and my advice to our police force is to at least consider it.

Visiting a restaurant along the area known as “The Miracle Mile” in Coral Gables the first thing I noticed was a police car. It was strategically placed that no one could miss it. A police officer was standing by it watching everyone. Another officer was walking (are you noting I said WALKING) a beat - along one side of the road and then the other. When he returned to the police car he swapped roles with the other officer. Both officers had a friendly smile and a nod if you caught their eye.

The following day I was at a shopping plaza that surrounded a park (the Village of Merick Park). The shops were on three levels and a road went through the centre of the park. Once again there was a police car with two officers carrying out exactly the same procedures as along the Miracle Mile. This time the officer patrolling walked around all three levels.

I do not know whether the stores paid for the police presence but when, a few days later I was down in The Keys, the same thing occurred at all the tourist areas.

In the thirty years I have lived on Grand Cayman I have never seen this, although in my earlier years there were foot patrols in George Town during the day. In those earlier years we never had the crime we have today. A few years ago we had the neighbourly policeman but he/ she has vanished.

Now we have the gun crimes (I can’t say we have more crime because statistics will show we have less) and tourists and tourist restaurants are being targeted.

We are getting a reputation we don’t want. “Cayman is unsafe.” How have we allowed ourselves to get this?

Who is to blame? What can we do?

The first thing is trust. Without that we are doomed.

It has to come from the police first. They have to show we can trust them. With that comes respect. They have to show they are doing something. Racing around in new cars and hovering overhead in a noisy helicopter is not cutting any ice with me. We need to see them physically on the streets and our tourists need to be aware they’re there and they will protect them... And us.

Maybe take some advice from Miami. It’s where most of us play tourist.

The Miss Cayman annual pageant has set its date for September 24th 2011 at the Lion’s Community Centre.

The ten contestants have had training with fashion professionals for several months in etiquette, runway posture, interview techniques and public speaking. They have gained lots of knowledge from this experience, which they are ready to take to the contest.

Committee Chair, Ms. Lynn Bodden applauded the ladies for their dedication and unyielding efforts during this time.

“These contestants are extremely hard working and committed to becoming the next Miss Cayman Islands. All ten of them are true winners in our eyes and we wish them all the best in the pageant.”

The young ladies will next appear at a fashion show fundraiser at Tiki Beach on Thursday September 15th followed by their motorcade on Saturday September 17th.

The pageant’s theme this year is ‘Island Paradise’ which is sure to wow the public.

The doors open at 5:30pm to ensure early seating. General admission tickets are $30 and children’s are $15.

Tickets are now on sale at Sand Angels at Camana Bay, Just Add Water at Governor’s Square, The Ministry of Tourism see Ms. Dawn McLean-Sawney, Miss Cayman contestant and committee members.

Children under the age of 12 will have discounted tickets and VIP is sold out.

Cancer awareness weekend The Cayman Islands Cancer Society is organising Conquering Cancer II – Let’s Fight Cancer Together – a series of cancer awareness activities for both health professionals and the general public on 9th and 10th of September.

Every two years the Society organises such an event and Dr. Sook Yin, Medical Director of the Society, says “Cancer is not selective and as health care providers, we are continuously waging the war on cancer. This weekend is the weekend of cancer awareness and CICS is committed to circulate as much information as possible throughout the community”. The events will include speakers from the Cayman Islands and around the world and attendees will have an opportunity to interact and ask questions of the speakers on a one-to-one basis.

The first event on Friday 9th September will be at St. Matthew’s University School of Medicine beginning with refreshments and registration at 5:30pm; then followed by five presentations beginning at 6:15pm. The evening will be for doctors and allied professions, as well as medical students. Attendees will receive 3 hours continuing education credit. Speakers at this event will be Dr. Troy Gatcliffe from Baptist Health International, Dr. Carlos Suarez and Dr. Abner Landry from ORNOA, Dr. Linda Lee from Johns Hopkins and Dr. Lynn Feun from University of Miami.

The second event is a free event open to the public and will be on Saturday, 10th September from 8:30am – 2:00pm at the Grand Cayman Marriott Beach Resort on West Bay Road. The Society and its partners for the event Baptist Health International, ORNOA, John’s Hopkins, University of Miami are inviting everyone to join them at this day of awareness and education.

There will be twelve educational awareness sessions throughout the day, opportunities to learn about your individual cancer risk and what you can do to lower it and a number of booths promoting cancer prevention, healthy lifestyles and other healthrelated services available in the Cayman Islands. Dr. Yin added that

“the information passed on to health care providers and the public through these educational sessions will serve to keep the people up to date”. She also urges them to “take the initiative to act on everything learned from these awareness sessions”. The Cayman Heart Fund will be on hand to do general health screenings for BMI, cholesterol and glucose. Participants should come fasting for at least 10 hours before the tests. Additionally, there will be vouchers for free Pap smears, mammograms and PSA blood tests for individuals who do not have health insurance coverage for these potentially lifesaving tests.

Refreshments will also be served throughout the day.

Fishing for Purpose is a new programme for boys from John Gray High School, aimed at finding purpose on life’s journey from older male role models - while having fun fishing.

The idea came to Christopher Murray, School Counsellor at John Gray High School, during the summer holidays.

“Fishing for Purpose is aimed at having meaningful relationships developed between positive male role models and teenage boys.

In addition to that, it addresses the dilemma, that in our society most of our boys are not finding their true identity – this is because of poor role models.

“So we are creating an opportunity for them to have a fun, yet meaningful time, as we believe our boys need ‘tour guides’ to help them on the journey of life.

“We will be going fishing two Saturdays per month to socialise and have fun and we hope that we’ll not just catch fish but see that young men will find purpose too.

“We will be taking two boats out on the reef that can hold about 15 persons between them. At the moment, we have five men who are helping with the programme but we are looking for more to join in. We

are especially looking for people with boats they would be willing to let us use.”

15-year old Sidney Jamal Miller was really looking forward to the fishing trips, which begin in just over a week. “I think it’s a good idea. It’s

a good opportunity for us to get out and learn to avoid going down the wrong road in life from someone who’s older. As well as learning a little bit of fishing skills too.”

Eight George Town beauties, pictured right, will be competing for the Miss George Town Festival Queen crown on 17 September.

The competition, to be held at George Town Central Park, Scranton, is open to ladies of 12 years old and above. The winner will represent George Town in the Miss Festival Queen Competition finals, scheduled for Thursday 10 November on the waterfront, George Town, the day before the official kick-off of Pirates Week.

This year, each districtâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Heritage Day Committee will be responsible for selecting their own Festival Queen, who will enter the national

competition and will also gain a place in that districtâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s float parade.

The George Town competition will be divided into four parts, says organiser Dwight McLean. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There will be an opening dance with stingray costumes, followed by a â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Tribute to George Town Heroesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;.

Then there will be another costume section, this time with a Cayman Orchid theme, followed by a fashion show,â&#x20AC;? Mr. McLean said.

Contestant for the George Town competition, 18-year old Nassaria Thompson said that she decided to enter after her aunt told her about it.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;I entered the Mr. and Mrs. Valentine pageant at John Gray High School, but apart from that, this will be my first pageant.

Ms. Thompson selected her great grandparents, Hubert and Maryann Ramoon, as the George Town heroes she will be speaking about, during the second section of the pageant when contestants are required to come on stage in traditional Cayman dress.

Stocks fall sharply as Europe worries deepen

NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks fell sharply in morning trading Tuesday as worries deepened about Europe’s debt crisis and the weak U.S. economy. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note fell and gold rose as investors sought safety.

An hour after the opening bell, the Dow was down 274 points, or 2.4 percent, to 10,961. All 30 stocks that make up the Dow average fell.

The S&P 500 lost 30, or 2.6 percent, to 1,143. The Nasdaq composite fell 56, or 2.3 percent, to 2,424.

Bank stocks fell more than the overall market. Federal regulators filed lawsuits late Friday against 17 major banks, saying they sold Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac billions of dollars worth of mortgage-backed securities that lost value when the housing market collapsed. Bank of America Corp. lost

nearly 6 percent. JPMorgan Chase & Co., Wells Fargo & Co. and Goldman Sachs each fell 3 percent or more.

The losses came after steep declines in European indexes. The Stoxx 600 Europe index fell 4.1 percent on Monday because of concerns that Europe’s debt problems could slow growth around the world. The index fell another 1.4 percent Tuesday. U.S. markets were closed Monday for the Labor Day holiday.

The U.S. economy is also weak. A report Friday found that no jobs were added to the economy in August. It was the worst reading on the jobs market since September 2010.

The price of assets that appeared to be safer bets during a weak economy rose sharply. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note fell to 1.93 percent. On

I had to leave the Cayman Islands to do some research on a story I wanted to write and was staying near Edinburg, Scotland. Before I departed I found that there were embroidery classes to be had in the area where I had my lodgings. So, I took my embroidery machine with me.

I went to the lessons and sat for hours learning the basics of the machine (from turning it on to utilising the most popular of its features). I had already read the manual (a recommendation of mine to anyone who owns a machine.)

Don’t be intimidated by the size of the manual; it makes for interesting reading and got me really excited about using the machine. Just draw a warm bubble bath (you really need a warm one in Scotland), and start reading! I, therefore, already knew a lot of the first class’ instruction.

You may think it was a waste of my time to take these lessons, but not so.

I was able to use my time to ask more in-depth questions and expand on my knowledge while others were learning how to thread the needle. However, if you are one of the ones that need to learn the most basic ‘basics’ then you may want to inquire about taking the classes for a second, or third time. This will help you out with expanding your knowledge once you do know how to operate the machine.

NEVER think that a question is dumb or has been asked ad nauseum and no one wants to hear you ask it.

The chances are, if you are wondering, then at least one other person is, too, and will benefit from your asking.

The teacher had a basic lesson on stabilisers as well, and I purchased a sampling of several that they offered at a store I found in Edinburgh (for a small fortune!). I made a ‘stabiliser’ booklet, cut a swatch of each one, listed the name brand, type and what it could be used for.

and was trying to figure out (by feel) which ones they were, I could refer back to the booklet for help.

I come by being cheap honestly, and so I have tried many tricks to save money by scrimping and saving and reusing everything! You can save your thread snips to create fabric out of it. I have used empty thread cones to dry 3D free standing lace ornaments on and, most of all, I save stabiliser pieces.

If I can piece a sheet of stabiliser for some projects I will! Sometimes this works, and other times it will fail on you every time. The trick is knowing why you are using the stabiliser. The actual purpose of the stabiliser in each project is the key to knowing how much or how little you can actually get away with!

For example, if you are doing a design on a t-shirt, then you would

need an intact piece of soft cut-away stabiliser to actually be the strong, unmoving foundation for the stretchy knit fabric. However, if you are embroidering a name on a ribbon, or are embroidering on top of dense or fuzzy fabric, then smaller piece of water-soluble stabiliser (floated on top) will keep the stitches from sinking into the project .

You can also stitch wss (water soluble stabiliser) together with water soluble thread in top and in the bobbin to create a larger piece you can reuse for smaller free standing lace or other in the hoop projects which call for wss.

Obama yields on smog rule in face of GOP demands WASHINGTON (AP) — In a dramatic reversal, President Barack Obama on Friday scrubbed a cleanair regulation that aimed to reduce health-threatening smog, yielding to bitterly protesting businesses and congressional Republicans who complained the rule would kill jobs in America’s ailing economy.

Withdrawal of the proposed regulation marked the latest in a string of retreats by the president in the face of GOP opposition, and it drew quick criticism from liberals. Environmentalists, a key Obama constituency, accused him of caving to corporate polluters, and the American Lung Association threatened to restart the legal action it had begun against rules proposed

by President George W. Bush.

The White House has been under heavy pressure from GOP lawmakers and major industries, which have slammed the stricter standard as an unnecessary jobs killer. The Environmental Protection Agency, whose scientific advisers favored the tighter limits, had predicted the proposed change would cost up to $90 billion a year, making it one of the most expensive environmental regulations ever imposed in the U.S. However, the Clean Air Act bars the EPA from considering the costs of complying when setting public health standards.

Obama said his decision was made in part to reduce regulatory burdens and uncertainty at a time of rampant questions about the strength of the U.S. economy.

Underscoring the economic concerns: a new report Friday that showed the economy essentially adding no jobs in August and the unemployment rate stubbornly stuck at 9.1 percent.

The regulation would have reduced concentrations of groundlevel ozone, the main ingredient in smog, a powerful lung irritant that can cause asthma and other lung ailments. Smog is created when emissions from cars, power and chemical plants, refineries and other factories mix in sunlight and heat.

Buying cheap sunglasses doesn’t necessarily mean you are just getting poor quality sunglasses. You can easily get cheap sunglasses on line from all the popular designers and, in these hard times, it makes sense.

APPLY SUNSCREEN PROPERLY.

The end of the school year is here and savvy moms and dads by now have made all the arrangements for summer.

Summer camps and leisurely days at the pool or beach are just a few of the summer rituals for many families.

However if you're tempted to let your child play outdoors for even a few minutes without proper sun protection, you might want to think twice.

Adolescence and childhood are critical periods during which exposure to UV radiation is more likely to contribute to skin cancer in later life. Children with fair skin, blond or red hair and blue or green eyes are at the highest risk of sunburn.

But darker-skinned children also need sun protection. With this in mind, it’s important that parents teach their children how to enjoy fun in the sun safely.

LIMIT OUTDOOR PLAYTIME BETWEEN 10A.M. AND 4P.M.

Apply a thick, even coat to all exposed areas 20 - 30 minutes before your child goes out in the sun. Choose a sunscreen with SPF (Sun Protection Factor) 15 or higher. Make sure it's labeled "broad spectrum," which means it blocks both UVA and UVB sunlight. For your little ones, sunscreen that contains zinc oxide or titanium dioxide should be selected as these compounds are less irritating than others. Sunscreen sticks are best for the face because they are sweat proof and less likely to drip. Don't forget nose, ears, hands, feet, shoulders, and behind the neck; lips can also burn, so apply a lip balm with SPF protection. Reapply sunscreen every 2 to 3 hours, or after sweating or swimming.

COVER FROM HEAD TO TOE. Wearing protective clothing and hats is one of the primary ways of warding off UV damage. When wet, light coloured clothing transmits just as much sunlight as bare skin. Keep your kids covered with dark colours, long sleeves, and pants whenever possible. And don't forget the accessories: sunglasses with UV protection to guard against burned corneas, and hats to prevent sunburned scalps and faces.

Protective clothing, hats with wide brims, and sunglasses are just as important for babies. At the beach, bring along a large umbrella.

Parents, you are the best teacher by practicing sun safety yourself. If your child sees you following sun safety rules, he'll take them for granted and follow suit. Teach every member of the family how to protect their skin and eyes. With proper supervision, children can learn to protect themselves and enjoy summer fun without sacrificing the health of their skin.

Avoid unnecessary exposure when the sun's rays are at their strongest. Even on cloudy or cooler days, ultraviolet (UV) rays remain strong. Shady spots can be just as tricky because of reflected light. If your child is playing outdoors during these hours, make sure to apply ample sunscreen.

WATCH OUT FOR MEDICATIONS. Some medications increase the skin's sensitivity to the sun, so make sure to ask your doctor whether your child may be at risk. Prescription antibiotics and acne medications are the most notorious culprits, but when in doubt, ask.

Legendary soccer player scouting in Cayman “Reggae Boy” fact file Fitzroy Simpson (born 26 February 1970 in England) is a former professional Englishborn Jamaican footballer. He was a midfielder, but also played frequently as a left back.

He joined the youth team at English club Swindon Town in 1987, and signed a professional contract the next year. In his debut match he was sent off for punching an opponent. Before the 1992/93 season he was sold to Premier League outfit Manchester City for £500,000. After a couple of seasons he struggled to stay in the first eleven, went on loan to Bristol City and was finally transferred to Portsmouth, where he played until 1999. During this period he played in the 1998 FIFA World Cup for Jamaica.

Jamaican “Reggae Boy” Fitzroy Simpson, says although Caymanians love football, it’s not yet a way of life.

And he says to improve the standard of players here, we must first improve the standards of pitches and training facilities.

Mr. Simpson, who was born in Bradford, England, has an illustrious and decorated football career, which spans over two decades.

The 41 year old, ex-professional football player shared with iNews his thoughts on Cayman’s football standards as well as observations he has made since his arrival.

“I am here to observe talent. The reception to my stay here has been quite flattering,” he said.

“The Under-13’s here are very talented, they will be in our training session tomorrow.

“Remember, the Jamaica Reggae Boys did not just play in the World Cup,

English based players, Fitzroy Simpson, Paul Hall, Deon Burton and Robbie Earl created a powerful injection of talent and experience which helped to earn Jamaica a spot in the 1998 Word Cup football tournament in France.

The former midfielder has represented teams such as Swindon Town, Portsmouth and Manchester City Football Clubs in England.

Between 1992–93, Swindon Town Football Club sold Fitzroy Simpson to Premier League giants, Manchester City.

Mr. Simpson’s accolades include his participation in the highly competitive Spanish Football league. He has also helped to coach popular soccer team, Charlton Athletics.

In an interview with iNews, Manager of the Cayman Islands senior Men’s Team, Mr. Mark Campbell, applauded the football legend for his visit.

Mr. Campbell also added that the presence of the Reggae Boy could very well be a morale booster for the Cayman Islands team.

iSports WORLD City probe offensive email Manchester City are to investigate claims chief executive Garry Cook emailed defender Nedum Onuoha’s cancer-suffering mother mocking her illness.

Dr Anthonia Onuoha received an offensive email which was intended for the club’s football administrator Brian Marwood, in regard to a contract dispute her son was having with City.

Cook has denied he sent the message, claiming his account was hacked.

Dr Onuoha told the Sun the email had left her “humiliated and devastated”.

Defender Onuoha’s mother, who acts as his agent, had previously sent a message to Marwood and Cook, explaining that while she was “ravaged with cancer” it would not prevent her negotiating on behalf of her son.

Dr Onuoha then received an email, allegedly from Cook and addressed “Brian”, which apparently ridiculed her use of language in describing her illness.

The email is reported to have read: “Ravaged with it!!...I don’t know how you sleep at night. You used to be such a nice man when I worked with you at Nike. G”.

Manchester City have responded to the allegations by releasing a statement promising a full investigation.

“Following allegations made to the football club by Dr Anthonia Onuoha, subsequently reported in today’s [Monday] media, the club can confirm that a board-led review has been launched into the matter,” said the statement.

Dr Onuoha told the Sun: “When I opened my emails and saw the message, it was the worst day of my life, even worse than being diagnosed with cancer.”

Road to Brazil will get tougher

Cayman Islands National Football team were facing a tough World Cup qualifying match last night with Technical Director Carl Brown admitting things were going to get much tougher.

The home nation went down 1-0 away at Suriname making last night’s clash with El Salvador a must-win match.

Coach Carl Brown said: “I believe the Suriname game brought home the reality of what they are involved in – it’s a very tough tournament and its only going to get tougher.

“I believe that after Suriname, the players themselves will be much better prepared to face the El Salvador team – It was a great experience for them. We have been telling them how tough playing at this level will be.”

Captain of the Cayman Islands National Team, Ian Lindo, said he was planning on telling the team to enjoy themselves during the match.

He added: “We’ve done the hard work…the hard work is over with

now, so just enjoy it. Its not every day you get to play in a World Cup qualifying game.”

But he admitted knowing little about the next opponents on their long road to Brazil saying: “Honestly, not much…I think I saw a few games with them in the Gold Cup. Technically they are a good team. They like to move the ball a lot so we have to be ready for that.”

Mr Brown added: “Technically they are a very sound team. Recently we saw them playing games against the Jamaican team. They are out of Central

America and we know what that brings in terms of technical ability.

“We believe this El Salvador team has been improving. We’ve seen them over the last couple of years playing very well. We expect them to be a very tough opponent.

“There are always going to be questions about the selection of teams.

The Cayman Islands are very small in terms of numbers and we have to look at the Premier League we’ve got here for selecting our players, and that’s what we’ve been doing over the years.”
