As rumours swirl and suspicions mount, Ritz-Carlton Grand Cayman developer Michael Ryan says he is carrying on normally, “just as I have for the last five years”, rejecting fears of ruinous legal problems. “This is a whole bunch of charges that has been taken out of context and blown up,” he said yesterday, responding to queries about a 28 February lawsuit filed by creditor RC Cayman Holdings. “I have not seen the whole thing, and can’t comment,” he said, declining to elaborate, saying only that “we have taken all appropriate steps”. Mr Ryan is the subject of a late-February lawsuit, filed by Conyer Dill & Pearman on behalf of Delaware-based RC Cayman Holdings, which seeks to take control of the hotel in satisfaction of an outstanding multi-milliondollar loan.

Jazz on the Green will hit the right note

“It feels like I’m in a dream!”

Some cool scenes from last year’s Jazz on the Green.

Christopher Tobutt christopher.tobutt@ieyenews.com

Every year jazz fans look forward to the Jazz on the Green, the hottest annual music festival that captures the coolest sounds around. But the coolest thing about Jazz on the Green - so called because it takes place in Gaston Maloney’s garden at Agnes Road in George Town – is that all the proceeds go to help the George Town Sports Club. This year the headlining performer is the remarkable jazz/ hip-hop fusion vocalist José James from the USA, dishing up a plateful of his uniquely smokey, goldenthroated grooves Other offerings, in keeping with previous years include a distinctly Caribbean take on Jazz, with the Desi Jones Quartet, all the way from Jamaica. Then there’s the multi-talented Eddie Bullen, pianist, songwriter and record producer, who originally comes from Grenada but currently

resides in Canada. Barbadian vocalist Marissa Lindsay will be serving up a hot blend of soul and jazz, and Triggerfish, the local eight-piece jazz ensemble, will be starting things off to make sure the vibes are headed in the right direction. Apart from the rich musical feast, visitors to Jazz on the Green can

enjoy food and drinks - all included in the ticket price. Jazz on the Green starts at 4.30 on Saturday 17 March. Ticket prices are CI$80.00 (US$100) in advance or CI$90.00 at the gate, and are available from Funky Tangs, Moneygram, Arabus, C.I. Department of Tourism (www. Cayman Box Office Singh’s Roti Shop, Gaston Maloney & Lee Ramoon.

Caymankind wins silver award The Cayman Islands U.S. advertising campaign, Caymankind, has been distinguished with a Silver Adrian Award from the Hospitality Sales Marketing Association International (HSMAI). The Adrian Awards recognize outstanding achievements in advertising, public relations and digital marketing, specifically within the travel industry, as voted on by the knowledgeable experts of HSMAI. The Caymankind campaign was categorized for “repositioning” the destination, introducing national audiences to the unique spirit of the Cayman Islands. The initiative depicts the Cayman Islands as more than a destination: it is a people, a place and an approach to life that are as unique as they are universal. Voted on by three judges, knowledgeable media and experts within the hospitality, travel, tourism industry, Caymankind was recognized for its exceptional

potential to successfully achieve its “repositioning” objectives. The ads capture the beauty, culture, and vibrancy of the Cayman Islands, evoking a desire to belong to Caymankind. In its essence, the campaign depicted the character of the Cayman Islands, as reflected in the smiling, friendly faces visitors will meet, the once-in-a-lifetime experiences they will share, and the breathtaking natural beauty they will discover at every turn. The Caymankind campaign included a song, which was arranged and recorded locally in Grand Cayman by more than a dozen of the country’s most popular singers and musicians, as well as a group of talented students from the George Town Primary School. Commenting on the success of the campaign, Premier McKeeva Bush stated that “We are proud to have been recognized by the esteemed experts of the Hospitality

Visiting Dermatologist

Sales Marketing Association for our Caymankind campaign, which we feel encompasses everything that makes the Cayman Islands unique – from the friendliness of our people and our rich cultural heritage to our cosmopolitan style, stunning natural beauty and warm welcome, which we extend to those who visit our shores.”

Diabetes education gets major boost The fight against diabetes received a significant boost this weekend (3 & 4 March) as over thirty healthcare professionals completed a Diabetes Educators’ Course. Sponsored by Rotary Central, the course focused on disease management strategies, addressing a critical shortage of healthcare professionals with the necessary ability to teach their patients selfmanagement skills. “Diabetes and its complications are among the five leading causes of death worldwide. It is therefore important that people with diabetes be taught self-management skills in order to reduce the risk of complications from this disease. Unfortunately, to date, there have been only a few persons with this skill in the Caribbean,” explained Rotary Central’s Chairperson for its Diabetes Initiative Ms. Zelta Gayle, RGN. “This Diabetes Educators’ Course has been developed to train healthcare professionals to provide

accurate, effective and culturally sensitive education to people with diabetes in the Caribbean. “By working as a member of a diabetes management team, the diabetes educator will improve the care that patients with diabetes receive by empowering the patient to make the necessary behavioural changes they need to manage their disease more effectively,” Ms. Gayle

noted further. Attending the certification ceremony, the Minister of Health the Hon. Mark Scotland, JP, said while diabetes is one of the leading healthcare challenges, it is also one of the world’s most preventable epidemics which can be countered through education and a strong focus on prevention disease management. to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

“It’s all speculation, innuendo and rumour” Tad Stoner tad.stoner@ieyenews.com

Continued from front page Naming Mr Ryan, his assistant Francis Doud, Tony Haddad, also of the hotel, and two related companies, at least one of them -Condoco Grand Cayman Resort -owned by Mr Ryan, the suit seeks to take control of the hotel and its properties. Neither Mr Ryan nor Conyers Dill partner Richard Finlay would say if a response had been filed as of yesterday, but Mr Ryan rejected the allegations. “Talking about this doesn’t do anyone any good. It’s all speculation, innuendo and rumour and it hurts the guys with the asset, it hurts the asset itself, it hurts the country they serve. It hurts everyone. “It’s a challenging economy for everyone, and I’m sorry for that. I am trying to pursue this asset and keep people employed and move the economy forward, and it’s particularly tough in real estate. ”I am going to carry on, just as I have for the last five years, just as I have always done,” he said. He rejected rumours that he had left -- or was preparing to leave -the Cayman Islands, while a series of calls countered stories that Ryanaffiliated companies had shut. “I’m still in town. I’m always in town. I’m a Caymanian citizen. I love Cayman. Where would I go? Every time I go off somewhere, someone says I’ve left. Four years ago, I took my family on a sailing trip because I had worked my ass off. What’s so awful about that? “It’s frustrating and it’s a waste of time,” Mr Ryan said. While funding shortages have forced a halt to construction on the dozen-anda-half “Deckhouses”, part of Mr Ryan’s Dragon Bay development, both Stingray Construction and Orion Development remain open, while Land Registry records indicate Mr Ryan’s RR Holdings Ltd, owns four condominiums at the Ritz-Carlton Residency, purchased for $10.5 million. The RC Cayman loan was

originally extended by the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) in 2001, and used to build the 144-acre hotel, which opened in 2005. In August the same year, the loan was reduced to $180 million and, by April 2007, to $161 million, when RBS sold it to Credit Suisse subsidiary Column Financing, who the same month increased the sum to $250 million. With the hotel properties as collateral, in May 2011 Column transferred the loan to the RC Cayman Holdings subsidiary of Connecticut-based “alternative investment group” Five Winds Capital Partners. The Connecticut company formed the Delawarebased subsidiary on 4 May, ostensibly for the Ryan deal, although court documents have not revealed the outstanding amount on the loan. Another $200 million loan from a Missouri-based charity to Mr Ryan’s IRR Ltd for hotel development appears to have vanished from the latest income tax return by the Marvin M. Schwan Charitable Foundation, whose 2006, 2007 and 2008 returns are being audited by the IRS.

Letter submitted over port plans Tad Stoner tad.stoner@ieyenews.com

More than 30 George Town merchants yesterday submitted a three-page letter to Premier McKeeva Bush, concerned about plans for retail space at the new cruise port, fearing they will be driven out of business. The letter, signed by 33 business owners, includes such high-profile

Noel March

operations as Kirk Freeport, Crafts International, Guy Harvey’s Restaurant, Guy Harvey’s Gallery and Shoppe, Paradise Restaurant, Atlantis Submarines, Jacques Scott, Harley Davidson, the Hard Rock Café, Blue Iguana/2 Blue, Ugland House and even Jean-Eric “Notch” Smith, President of the Cayman Music and Entertainment Association and manager of the Tourist Attraction Board’s Craft Market. The letter was accompanied by a similar, 2009 letter, concerned about space and costs at the Royal Watler Cruise Terminal, signed by 37 businesses, many of the same as yesterday’s note, plus 12 Craft Market merchants. Both composed by Edmar’s Discount Drugs owner Noel March, the letters trace the inexorable decline of the downtown merchants, under pressure from reduced cruise arrivals, foul-weather diversions to Spotts Landing and uneven distribution of tender-boat arrivals – notwithstanding the struggles with expensive space of Royal Watler retailers since 2009. “I write to you on behalf of the many merchants whose names and signatures are appended to this correspondence,” Mr March writes, lamenting the “limited communication or lack thereof, regarding this very important project … to the residents of the Cayman Islands in general.” Noting a decline of 20% to 25% in cruise arrivals in the previous five years, he says business has declined “by the staggering amount of almost 50%” because of the location of

Jean-Eric “Notch” Smith

Royal Watler merchants Now, fearing the addition of still more retail space in the new China Harbour Engineering Companydeveloped cruise terminal, Mr March -- and nearly three dozen signatories -- have called for consultations with government to ensure “negotiations are on the right track”. Downtown landlords and smallbusiness owners, he said, “implore you to first consult the public and downtown merchants through a series of public meetings before proceeding any further with your negotiations. We keenly look forward to hearing from you in this very urgent matter.”

Dog team flown in to aid search Photos by Christopher Tobutt

One of the specialist dogs onboard a boat searches for Nathan.

Paul Kennedy paul.kennedy@ieyenews.com

Specialist police dogs have been flown in from Miami to help the search for missing teaching assistant Nathan Clarke. The two animals were taken out to sea onboard boats as police continued looking for the 31-year-old who vanished almost two weeks ago. Nathan’s family is still in Cayman and have been kept up to date on the search operation. Volunteers and divers are also helping police. The two dogs are similar to the ones brought in to aid in the search of Anna Evans who vanished a little more than a year ago in George Town landfill.

Yesterday a spokeswoman for the RCIPS said: “A team of specialist dogs and handlers from overseas have joined the ongoing search for Nathan Clarke. “The team, from MetroDade, arrived on island last night at the request of the RCIPS. “The two dogs, who have specialist skills in search and recovery, joined the waterbased search when it resumed at 9.30am. “This is not the first time that a team of dogs from MetroDade has assisted the RCIPS. They came on island just over a year ago to assist in the landfill search for Anna Evans.” Nathan vanished on Saturday 25th February after spending the evening with his

partner Lisa Beck and friends. He separated from the group who thought he had walked home alone but has never been seen since. Nathan, who works at Cayman Prep and High School, was originally from Cheltenham in the South West of England. Since his disappearance, friends and family both in Cayman and in the UK, have worked tirelessly to try and find out what has happened. Earlier this week due to bad weather conditions the sea search was suspended but resumed on Wednesday. Anyone with information can call the RCIPS on 9493999 and they can send images of the night he disappeared to nathanclarkeinfo@yahoo.com

Web star born: Kony video gets millions of views

KAMPALA, Uganda (AP) — If Joseph Kony lived in relative anonymity before this week, he’s an Internet star now. A video about the atrocities carried out by Kony’s Lord’s Resistance Army has become viral, racking up millions more views seemingly by the hour. The marketing campaign is an effort by the advocacy group Invisible Children to vastly increase awareness about a jungle militia leader who is wanted for atrocities by the International Criminal Court and is being hunted by 100 U.S. Special Forces advisers and local troops in four Central African countries. The group’s 30-minute video, which was released Monday, had more than 21 million views on YouTube by Thursday. The movie is part of an effort called KONY 2012 that targets Kony and the LRA. “Kony is a monster. He deserves to be prosecuted and hanged,” said Col. Felix Kulayigye, the spokesman for Uganda’s military. But Kulayigye said that Kony’s forces — once thousands strong — have been so degraded that he no longer considers him a threat to the region. Because of the intensified

8

hunt for Kony, his forces split into smaller groups that can travel the jungle more easily. Experts estimate that the LRA now has only about 250 fighters. Still, the militia abducts children, forcing them to serve as soldiers or sex slaves, and even to kill their parents or each other to survive. Uganda, Invisible Children and #stopkony were among the top 10 trending terms on Twitter among both the worldwide and U.S. audience on Wednesday night, ranking higher than New iPad or Peyton Manning. Twitter’s top trends more commonly include celebrities than fugitive militants. Ben Keesey, Invisible Children’s 28-year-old chief executive officer, said the viral success shows their message resonates and that viewers feel empowered to force change. It was released on the website, www. kony2012.com. “The core message is just to show that there are few times where problems are black and white. There’s lots of complicated stuff in the world, but Joseph Kony and what he’s doing is black and white,” Keesey said Wednesday. The burst of attention has also brought with it some criticism of

Invisible Children’s work on Internet sites, including the ratio of the group’s spending on direct aid, its rating by the site Charity Navigator, and a 2008 photo of three Invisible Children members holding guns alongside troops from the country now known as South Sudan. Invisible Children posted rebuttals to the criticism on its website. Kony’s Ugandan rebel group is blamed for tens of thousands of mutilations and killings over the last 26 years. Last year, Invisible Children began installing high frequency radios in Africa’s remotest jungle to help track militia attacks in Congo, Central African Republic and South Sudan. People in areas without phones can report attacks on the radios to people who put them on a website called the LRA Crisis Tracker. Invisible Children’s efforts to recruit support from U.S. political leaders appears to have paid off. Last year the State Department called the group’s Crisis Tracker “a really innovative tool” for information sharing. A U.S. military spokesman said the U.S. military is also aware of the Crisis Tracker.

UK police pull woman’s torso from London canal LONDON (AP) — British police searching for a missing former soap opera actress have pulled a woman’s torso from a London canal. Police say the headless and limbless body was found in Regent’s Canal, near east London’s hip Broadway Market area, after a passer-by spotted something in the water. London police also said Wednesday that detectives believe they know the identity of the victim but are awaiting forensic confirmation. British media said detectives suspect the remains found Tuesday

are those of Gemma McCluskie, who has been missing since last week. McCluskie starred on the popular soap “EastEnders” in 2001. Police say a 35-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the inquiry. Ms McCluskie, who starred as Kerry Skinner in 2001, disappeared from Bethnal Green, east London, last week. Scotland Yard said it knew the victim’s identity but was awaiting results of further forensic tests before formal identification. Family and friends have been carrying out searches across east

London and handing out missing person posters. Gemma McCluskie appeared in the BBC One soap in 2001. Her former co-stars Natalie Cassidy and Brooke Kinsella have both appealed for help on Twitter to find her. Ms Cassidy, who played Sonia Jackson in the soap, also posted on the website: “Gemma Mcluskie, missing since Thurs, if u have sn her/have any info PLS contact @ CarlyKarma ... #FindGemma.” A post-mortem examination on the body is due to take place at Poplar Mortuary later.

Colombian president: Cuba summit invite unlikely HAVANA (AP) — Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos held talks with President Raul Castro on Wednesday amid a controversy over whether Cuba will be allowed to participate in a regional summit, but left indicating that an invitation is not forthcoming. Santos (pictured) also visited convalescing Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez, who underwent cancer surgery in Havana last week, and said he seemed in good spirits and was planning to return to Venezuela next week. Members of the leftist Bolivarian Alliance, or ALBA, demanded

last month that Cuba be included in the April 14-15 Summit of the Americas in Cartagena, Colombia, but stopped short of threatening a boycott while urging Santos’ government to extend an invitation. As host, Colombia gets the final decision. “As we have said from the beginning, (the summit) is a matter that requires consensus, a consensus that unfortunately we have not been able to find,” Santos said at Havana’s international airport Wednesday night prior to departing. “We made it clear to President

Castro that although we truly appreciate his desire to be part of this gathering, under such circumstances without having reached consensus it is very difficult to extend an invitation to him.” Santos thanked Castro for his expressing a desire not to create problems for the summit or for Colombia, and also said he respects other nations’ wish for Cuba to take part in regional gatherings. “Colombia hopes that the situation of Cuba, its participation, be discussed in a constructive manner and respectfully at the Cartagena summit.”

Obama’s former nanny overwhelmed by new celebrity JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — Barack Obama’s former nanny, Evie, is overwhelmed by her jolt from transgender slum-dweller to local celebrity. TV crews troop in and out of her tiny concrete hovel. Estranged relatives finally want to meet. She even has a promising job offer. Evie, who was born male but considers herself a woman, decided after enduring years of abuse and ridicule she’d be better off trying to just fit in. She stopped cross-dressing and has since eked out a living hand-

washing clothes. But since being the subject of a recent article by The Associated Press about the struggles of transgender people in this predominantly Muslim nation, the 66-year-old has been showered with attention. It’s mostly because of her longago connection to the now-U.S. president — though she hopes it might generate more openness on gender issues. “After living without hope for so long, like I was locked in a dark room, I now feel like the door is

open,” said Evie, who like many Indonesians goes by one name. “It’s like the winds of heaven are blowing hope for me. Even my relatives who never cared about me are now coming to see me.” Though many newcomers to Indonesia are surprised by the quasi-acceptance and pervasiveness of transgenders — seen on TV, working in salons — they are usually the object of scorn. “I realise this won’t last long,” she said. “But I think my story might help open people’s eyes so they will respect us more.”

OPINION

The Editor speaks Green energy

Colin Wilson colin.wilson@ieyenews.com

We received a press release on Wednesday (7) from Caribbean Utilities Company (CUC) Grand Cayman’s only provider of electricity. For many years they have not been in favour of ‘green’ energy for obvious reasons but with the high price of fuel resulting in the consumer receiving astronomical expensive bills and CUC reaping almost obscene huge profits the company has been forced to look for alternative energy resources. I say ‘forced’ because when I first arrived here over thirty years ago it was against the law for you to install even a small solar power piece of equipment to heat your swimming pool. A law that CUC had been able to get placed in their supply agreement all customers had to sign. If you ignored it your electricity would be shut off.

Our Eye

Due to the general public’s discontent and their lobbying of their MLA’s (who were not director’s of CUC) this clause has since been removed. The current press release states, “With the high cost of fuel, CUC has been exploring large scale alternative energy options in an effort to reduce and stabilise costs to its consumers and to lower emissions from fossil fuels.” That is very noble and I can hear the applause. The company has revealed that more than 50 proposals that totaled over 380 MW of renewable energy have been submitted in response to an invitation to generate alternative sources of power for the island. CUC said it is now in the process of reviewing and analysing the proposals it has received and aims to accept up to 13 megawatts (MW) in aggregate of grid-connected renewable energy generation from

this request. However, although the 50 proposals evaluate to more than 380 MW of renewable capacity, CUC are only seeking 13 MW because of the “intermittent nature of renewables such as wind and solar (that) could cause grid instability and power quality concerns.” Oh, come on now. Does CUC really think we are going to swallow that one! It hasn’t been a big problem elsewhere in the world so why should it be a problem here? CUC has hardly been moving with any form of energy in announcing this. They sought public interest in August 2011 and the deadline for submission was 31st October. Yes, it was 2011 but it would not have surprised me if it had been 2012. CUC said it is now evaluating the proposals on technical and financial merits and the likelihood of projects to get the necessary government permits. It said that

one or more proposals could be picked in order to achieve the overall renewable generating capacity objective without compromising the reliability and stability of its electricity system. Oh don’t you just love all this ‘gobbledygook’! Although it is expected negotiations to begin with the selected bidders at the end of this month I wouldn’t place any bets on it. “Once the negotiations are completed and the necessary regulatory approvals received, a final power purchase agreement will be established with the successful bidder or bidders who will then start construction of the project,” the company said in the release. As I have noted before, I am so cynical now in my old age and no wonder. I have seen all this before and it just goes on and on. Yes, this is a step in the right direction but it is hardly a Usain Bolt one is it?

Will print newspapers still be in demand? Print VS Web

Georgina Wilcox georgina.wilcox@ieyenews.com

I received an interesting article that appeared in Feb. 2nd’s edition of “The Toronto Star under the banner “Newspapers will remain in demand”. It was written by their business reporter, Vanessa Lu who quotes a number of Canadian publishers who were present at a panel discussion organised by the Ad Club of Toronto. The general opinion quoted is that demand for print will always be here although Paul Godfrey, president and CEO of Postmedia Network said, “there may be

some shrinkage.” Another person there, Globe and Mail’s Phillip Crawley said, “some papers may disappear because they simply aren’t good enough.” I cannot agree with Godfrey’s comment that as people get older, they want the paper on their doorstep. The older people will have been the younger who have been used to the tablet and even brought up on it. I also argued exactly as he did: “I believe there will always be an appetite by people to read a newspaper, to feel it, to touch it, to carry it,” when I hated the thought

of reading a book on an iPad or Kindle. Now I read all my latest books this way. Once I got used to it, it was a breeze. With the increase in the circulation in Toronto of free print publications newspaper readership had grown and not diminished. Here in Cayman, print is still in demand. Our advertisers are far happier with iNews Cayman’s print edition than our Internet copy. Interestingly, more and more people download our exact pdf copy of the print edition also available on our website.

iLAUGH SO CANu Jose approaches the Mexican border on his bicycle. Hanging from his shoulders he has two large, bulky bags. The border patrol guard stops him and says, “Hey mister what ya got in those bags?”
“Just sand,” replied Jose. The guard says, “OK get off the bike and we’ll take a look. Who carries all that sand around?” The guard takes the bags and empties them on the ground and sure enough there’s nothing but sand.

A week later exactly the same thing happens. The guard asks, “What have you got in those bags?”
Jose replies “Sand.” The guard performs the same examinations on the bags and discovers nothing but sand. Once again he gives the sand back to Jose who crosses the border on his bicycle. This sequence of events is repeated every week for over a year until finally Jose stops showing up. A few weeks later the guard bumps into Jose in a Cantina in a local village.

However he is suspicious and so he detains Jose overnight while he gets the sand analysed. The next morning he receives the report that states that there is nothing but pure sand in the bags.

The guard approaches Jose and says, “What’s happened to you lately I haven’t seen you”. Jose replies “That’s right I have finished the job I was doing.”

The guard has no choice but to release Jose and puts the sand into new bags, slings them onto the man’s shoulders, and waves him across the border.

“So what sort of job involves taking bags of sand over the border” asks the guard. Jose sips at his beer and replies, “Smuggling bicycles!”

A guy walks into a crowded bar with a little spider on his shoulder. Everyone else laughs, but he says “This spider is stronger than any of you!” One bloke says “Prove it!” “Right; my spider will pick up this bar stool.” He puts the spider on the floor and the spider picks it up. Everyone is amazed, but then he says “Now the spider will pick up a table.” And the spider easily picks up the table. Everyone applauds, and the guy says “That’s nothing - this tiny spider will lift up the whole bar!” With a great effort, it picks up the bar. “What else can it do?” one of the blokes asks. So the man says “For the grand finale - it will pick up the bar with every one of us on it!” Everyone starts to get onto the bar until everyone in there is standing on it. The spider starts walking towards the bar with an air of determination. Then, a man walks into the bar, sees the spider on the floor walking towards the bar, and steps on it, saying “You bunch of wimps, scared of a little spider.”

LOL! Getting on a plane, I told the ticket lady,

“Send one of my bags to New York, send one to Los Angeles, and send one to Miami.” She said, “We can’t do that!” I told her, “You did it last week!” A doctor gave a man six months to live. The man couldn’t pay his bill, so he gave him another six months. At a new years party, Jack turns to his friend, Harry, and asks for a cigarette; “I thought you made a new years resolution to quit smoking” Harry responds, “I am in the process of quitting” replies Jack, “right now I’m in the middle of phase one, “Phase one?” wonders Harry, “Yeah” laughs Jack “I have quit buying”.

UK: Afghanistan deaths won’t dent troop morale LONDON (AP) — Britain’s defense secretary insisted on Thursday that the country’s troops are committed to their mission in Afghanistan, after the number of U.K. personnel killed in the conflict passed 400. Ministers have expressed fears that the deaths of six soldiers killed when an explosion hit their armored vehicle in the southwestern Helmand province on Tuesday evening would prompt new concern over the 11-year-long campaign. The incident was the biggest loss of life for British forces in Afghanistan since a plane crash in 2006. It took Britain’s death toll in Afghanistan since 2001 to 404. “The people on the ground are acutely conscious of the risks that they are running, but they are also incredibly proud of the job that they are doing and rightly so, and hugely satisfied by the level of public support that they have back home,” Defense Secretary Philip Hammond told ITV television. He said morale remains “extremely high, and it’s high because the servicemen and women there know that they are doing a job and are doing it well and that is their professional commitment to get that job done.” Britain’s defense ministry named those killed as Cpl. Jake Hartley, 20; Pvt. Anthony Frampton, 20; Pvt. Christopher Kershaw, 19; Pvt. Daniel Wade, 20; Pvt. Daniel Wilford, 21;

(Top row left to right) Sergeant Nigel Coupe, Corporal Jake Hartley and Private Anthony Frampton, with (bottom row left to right) Private Christopher Kershaw, Private Daniel Wade and Private Daniel Wilford, the six soldiers who were killed in a bomb blast in Afghanistan on Tuesday March 6, 2012.

and Sgt. Nigel Coupe, 33. Hammond said that full details of the incident were not yet established, but that it appeared “a massive” roadside bomb had exploded and “had a catastrophic impact on the vehicle.” Gen. David Richards, head of Britain’s armed forces, acknowledged that the military is

likely to suffer further losses before the end of the international mission in Afghanistan at the end of 2014. “As progress continues, the work of our servicemen and women will draw down, but our efforts will endure,” he wrote in an op-ed article in the Times of London. “Sadly, as we hold that course, it is likely that others will lose loved ones.”

The attack is expected to lead to new calls to accelerate the planned withdrawal of all U.S.-led coalition troops from Afghanistan by the end of 2014. British Prime Minister David Cameron said Wednesday he planned to discuss the drawdown in talks next week in Washington with President Barack Obama.

Antigua PM seeks to help recover Stanford funds ST JOHN’S, Antigua (AP) — Antigua’s prime minister has pledged to work with other agencies to try to help recover money that victims across the globe lost to convicted Texas tycoon R. Allen Stanford through his bank based on the Caribbean island. Baldwin Spencer did not give details of that cooperation when he spoke briefly to The Associated Press after a U.S. federal court jury in Texas convicted Stanford Tuesday on 13 of 14 charges,

16

including conspiracy, wire and mail fraud. Prosecutors say the financier used his Stanford International Bank to swindle investors out of more than $7 billion, using the money to fund a string of failed businesses, to bribe regulators and pay for luxuries such as yachts and private jets. His attorneys portrayed Stanford as a visionary entrepreneur who made money for investors and conducted legitimate business deals.

Spencer said he feels justice was served with the U.S. verdict, but said it “doesn’t bring any real joy” because he fears the verdict could provide more fuel to a U.S. victims’ coalition that has promoted a boycott if Antigua. The group has sometimes set up booths at travel shows to urge vacationers to avoid the tourismdependent island. “This is a very unfair campaign,” he said. “This country was made out as a country that encouraged

and gave sustenance, if you like, to such type of developments, and that clearly was not the case in my view.” Spencer did not mention the case of Leroy King, the former director of Antigua’s Financial Services Regulatory Commission, who has been indicted in the U.S. on charges of accepting bribes to ignore irregularities in Stanford’s financial empire and of writing false and misleading letters to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

Professional Image Course Launched The Chamber of Commerce’s Professional Development & Training Centre (PD&TC) is pleased to announce the introduction of a NEW “one-day” training course entitled Professional Image, in conjunction with facilitator, Ms. Catherine Tyson. The first sitting of this course will take place on March 21, 2012 at the Chamber of Commerce offices at Governors Square, West Bay Road. Whilst the Chamber has actually offered a thirty-minute minicourse on this topic at its Careers, Education, Training & Jobs Expo over the past two years, there were many persons who had expressed interest in an extended version of this training. This demand was also made evident in the results of the Chamber’s Training Needs Research conducted amongst its members in 2011. Against this background, the Chamber is happy that this course has been developed into a full one-day workshop in order to provide more valuable

information to the Cayman Islands community. Course facilitator, Catherine Tyson, is thrilled to be integral to this initiative and has this to say “In a world where the word professional is often thrown around, it appears that many of us simply need to get back to the basics to actually understand the total essence of this word. Being professional goes beyond a nice suit and an expensive briefcase and covers your first contact to your daily behaviour on the job. This course attempts to do just that; get us back to the basics and deal with issues in the trenches that have simply been taken for granted or misunderstood.” Ms. Tyson is a trained Counselor by profession and holds a Master’s degree in Social Work with an undergraduate degree in Psychology. Her expertise is in the area of self development and grooming for the professional world on different levels aims to look at the individual

as a whole and apply certain principals to their daily work. In today’s working environment, one cannot ignore that professionalism begins with looking the part but continues with acting and behaving the part. Being dressed for success goes beyond face value but looks also at ethics, practices, time management, interpersonal communication and office politics. In the current business climate, especially for junior members within organisations, landing the right job and ensuring personal fit and further development is even more crucial to sustained success. This workshop introduces participants to various aspects of honing and maintaining that level of business prowess. The Professional Image training course is geared towards: • Entry level or junior positions that need that extra professional polishing • Individuals seeking to re-enter

How to pass examinations without being an A plus student

Georgina Wilcox georgina.wilcox@ieyenews.com

This is the start of my articles showing collected tips and tricks to help you pass a school or university exam. They are called exam techniques. There are four parts to the articles that follow in iNews Cayman. Watch out for them. 1. Are exam techniques better than knowledge? Half a century ago I learned about exam techniques. At that time I was snowed under with study, and my headmaster said that I had as much chance as the Man in the Moon of passing three Ordinary level GCE subjects. He was right at that time! It didn’t matter how much study I did, term exam questions were always about stuff I hadn’t studied. Then I learned that you perform best in an exam if you know more about exams rather than about the subject of the exam. I liked that. 2. Using exam techniques So I studied exam techniques. What were the results? I passed eleven GCE ordinary level subjects. When artistic talent was handed out, my brother got it all, and there was none left for me. I panic every time I am asked to do a stick-drawing.

However in the GCE exam, my brother set out to do good art, and I used exam techniques to get good marks. To my great glee I got a better pass mark than my brother did. I was sure that proved that exams are unfair, but I remained very smug. 3. Multiple choice My husband (at the time – we are since divorced) had a multiplechoice paper on a subject about which I knew nothing. I tried the exam techniques I have explained in three further articles. My husband assured me that I would have passed - without knowing anything about it. Then came a time that I studied maths again, and I was hopelessly at sea. I learned maths where the best methods were those that worked - fast. New maths had been introduced since I was at college. Now the explanations were just nonsense to me. However when the exam came around, it was another multiple choice test, and I passed! 4. We’ve learned nothing My son’s final exams were coming. I searched libraries for the most modern examination techniques, and received a great shock. All the books still advised lots of hard work. There was no mention of

exam techniques at all. They mentioned mnemonic techniques to help me remember, but I’d been using them since the middle of last century and although they help and I do recommend them. They can let you down and they did. The day before a university exam I decided that I would probably get a question about the life cycle of Fasciola hepatica. So I used a mnemonic technique to memorise every number in the complicated life cycle. Next day the expected question appeared, and I remembered every number - BUT - I had forgotten the units. It was no use remembering the number 3 if I didn’t know if it was three hours, or three days, or three weeks, or three months, or three years. So I couldn’t answer the question. Fortunately examination

techniques got me through the exam. 5. Birth of exam mastery I tried to explain to my son how to pass exams. Unfortunately he thought that he knew everything... and didn’t bother to listen... and failed his exams. 6. The arithmetic of success Suppose you’re taking an essay exam with five questions. You know you can give good answers for three questions, but think that you know nothing about the rest. I’ve seen students walk out of essay exams in that situation - they hadn’t studied exam technique. Your teacher has brainwashed you by punishing anybody who wrote a three line essay for homework. But two essays of three lines each could take you from failure to a pass mark. My article shows what to put into these few lines, but think of the arithmetic. You got 45 marks out of 60 for your three good questions. The pass mark is 47%. You get one mark out of 20 for each of the remaining two answers. You have a pass mark. That is better than walking out of the exam in a panic - isn’t it? In fact I usually got about 75% by using exam techniques. Oh, they aren’t magic. I failed an occasional exam, but I passed many exams that I didn’t deserve to pass, especially using crafty essays. To be continued...

The Colossus computer

Georgina Wilcox georgina.wilcox@ieyenews.com

Engineer, Tommy Flowers, built the world’s first electronic, digital computer in 1943. It was called the Colossus and it took him from February until December – eleven months. It was used by British codebreakers to help read German messages during World War II that were encrypted with the Lorenz SZ40/42 machine. The codebreakers used thermionic valves (vacuum tubes) to perform the calculations. The Colossus was used to find possible key combinations for the Lorenz machines – rather than decrypting an intercepted message in its entirety. The first Colossus, Mark 1, was followed by nine Mark 2 machines, the first being commissioned in June 1944, and the original Mark 1 machine was converted into a Mark 2. An eleventh Colossus was essentially finished at the end of the war. Because of the effort to maintain the secrecy of the project right up to 1972 most of the Colossus hardware and blueprints were destroyed. This deprived some of the Colossus creators of credit for their pioneering advancements in electronic digital computing during their lifetimes. Thus, Colossus could not be included in the history

of computing hardware for many years. EDVAC was the early design that had the most influence on subsequent computer architecture. In 1993, Tony Sale started the Colossus Rebuild Project and in 1994 a team led by Sale began to recreate the massive machine at The National Museum of Computing at Bletchley Park in the UK. In spite of the blueprints and hardware being destroyed, a surprising amount of material survived, mainly

in engineers’ notebooks, but a Colossus saying, ““My laptop considerable amount of it in the digested ciphertext at a speed of 1.2 U.S. The optical tape reader might million characters per second—240 have posed the biggest problem, times faster than Colossus. If you but Dr. Arnold Lynch, its original scale the CPU frequency by that designer, was able to redesign it to factor, you get an equivalent clock of 5.8 MHz for Colossus. That is a his own original specification. On June 6th, 1996, the recreated remarkable speed for a computer Colossus was first switched on and built in 1944.” Tony Sale was equally pleased. by 2007 a fully functional replica of the Colossus Mark 2 was completed. “On the strength of today’s To celebrate the project completion performance Colossus is as good a Cipher Challenge was instigated as it was six decades ago”, he and pitted the rebuilt Colossus commented. “We are delighted to against radio amateurs worldwide have produced a fitting tribute to in being first to receive and decode the people who worked at Bletchley three messages enciphered using Park and whose brainpower devised the Lorenz SZ42 and transmitted these fantastic machines which from radio station DL0HNF in the broke these ciphers and shortened Heinz Nixdorf MuseumsForum the war by many months.” Andy Taylor, a systems analyst computer museum. Cuban paracyclist sets sights on London games HAVANA (AP) — Damian Lopez was 13 when he tried to untangle his kite from electrical wires dangling over a street corner and accidentally touched a high-voltage cable. The 13,000 volts that coursed through his body cost him both his forearms, melted much of the skin from his face and left him in a coma from which doctors predicted he would never emerge. “I could hear people saying, ‘This one won’t make it.’ But I fought and I came out of it,” Lopez said. After four months in the hospital, Lopez came home with injuries so severe he had trouble walking, eating, speaking and even closing his eyes.

Twenty-two years later, Lopez is close to realizing an unlikely dream by representing Cuba at the 2012 London Paralympics in cycling, the sport that he says kept him from drowning in self-pity and despair. “After the accident I didn’t want to leave the house, but some friends came looking for me to play. That was key,” Lopez said of his return to a go-go life of soccer, pigeonraising, chess, pool, motorcycles and, most importantly, bicycles. “It’s the same today. I don’t stop moving. I think I still have electricity in my arms,” he joked. It’s been a long, tough road to pedal, and Lopez said he owes a debt to many people, including an

American woman named Tracy Lea, who raised money for equipment and airfare and arranged to bring him to New York for free facial reconstruction surgery. “I don’t have the words to thank Tracy. I owe her so much,” Lopez said.

Manning lands in Miami, final destination unknown MIAMI (AP) — Touchdown, Peyton Manning. The former Indianapolis Colts quarterback landed late Wednesday afternoon in South Florida, drawing the attention of local TV news helicopters and NFL fans everywhere. His private plane arrived at a small airport 30 minutes from the Miami Dolphins’ complex, but he then rode off in a different direction with the news media in pursuit. When his van reached Miami Beach, it pulled over in a church parking lot, and Manning emerged to tell reporters South Florida might not be his final destination. Manning has a condo here and has been working out with former Colts teammate Reggie Wayne, who lives in South Florida. Manning’s not necessarily Dolphins-bound, he said. “I have no idea who wants me, what team wants me, how this process works,” Manning said. “I don’t know if it’s like college recruiting where you go take visits. I mean, this is all so new to me.” One TV station broadcast the interview live, even staying with the audio feed when the video turned shaky. Manning landed in South Florida just four hours after he bid the Colts goodbye at a news conference in

Indianapolis. They cut the injured quarterback rather than pay a $28 million bonus due this week. The Dolphins are one of several teams expected to court Manning, but a person familiar with their plans said Manning wasn’t in town to meet with the team. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the Dolphins hadn’t commented on Manning. Other teams considered potential suitors for Manning include the Cardinals, Broncos, Chiefs, Jets, Seahawks, Titans and Redskins. “I literally have not had one conversation with anyone about these teams,” Manning said. “It has been so hard for me trying to figure out some closure with my situation with the Colts. ... “I haven’t thought about teams and I don’t know who is interested, I really don’t. This is all new to me. But look, the Miami Dolphins have a great organisation, a great history there, they have new people in place. And so you have no idea what teams are interested.” When the Dolphins hired Joe Philbin as coach in January, team officials privately said owner Stephen Ross would strongly pursue Manning if he became available. The team has started 16

quarterbacks since Dan Marino retired. The incumbent is Matt Moore, who played well last year after Chad Henne was sidelined in Week 4 by a season-ending shoulder injury. But there are doubts that Moore is a franchise quarterback, and if the Dolphins don’t sign Manning, they may pursue the Packers’ Matt Flynn or try to trade up from the No. 8 spot and draft a quarterback in the first round in April. Henne is a free agent and unlikely to return. Miami has developed a recent habit for bigname acquisitions. The Heat landed LeBron James and Chris Bosh, and the Marlins added four All-Stars and manager Ozzie Guillen in a recent spree. Heat guard Dwyane Wade tweeted that he liked the idea of Manning joining the Dolphins. “Peyton that number 18 wld look gr8 in a dolphins uniform..steve ross let’s go.. marlins & heat style..All in.”

Howard of US signs new long-term deal with Everton LIVERPOOL, England (AP) — U.S. goalkeeper Tim Howard has extended his contract at Everton, tying him to the Premier League club until 2016. The 33-year-old Howard has played 256 games for Everton since joining from Manchester United in 2006, initially on loan before signing a permanent deal in February 2007. “It’s a place that is home for me,” Howard said in an Everton statement. Howard’s consistent performances for the northwest club have helped him keep the goalkeeper jersey for the U.S. national team. He played last week in the historic 1-0 win in Italy. He has played 72 times for the U.S. Howard this season scored his first professional goal — a lengthof-the-field effort in a 2-1 home loss to Bolton in January. “When you have a really good

22

relationship in life and both sides are eager to continue and keep that going, it’s a no-brainer,” Howard said of his new contract. “This hasn’t been a knockdown, drawn-out type of negotiation with meetings or anything like that. They were very happy to keep me here and I was very, very happy to stay.” Whether he stays on playing into his 40s is another matter. Fellow American goalkeeper Brad Friedel is still impressive at 40 with Tottenham in the Premier League, while 39-year-old Australia goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer recently signed a contract with Fulham until the summer of 2013 — when he will be approaching 41. “When (the new contract) is finished, I will take stock and figure out what I want to do,” Howard said. “At 33, I find it difficult to figure out how the 40-year-old goalkeepers get out of bed in

the morning. “As long as I am healthy and still have the desire to compete, I have to consider continuing to play. But as you get to 38, 39, 40, those things start to diminish, especially physically.” to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

Messi 1st player with five goals BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — For all the astonishing feats in his young career, Lionel Messi had never scored five goals in a professional game. And no one had ever scored five times in a Champions League match. Well, check both of those off. With another mesmerising performance, Messi helped defending champion Barcelona crush Bayer Leverkusen 7-1 Wednesday night to advance to the quarterfinals with a 10-2 aggregate win. “Without Messi, Barca is the best team,” Leverkusen coach Robin Dutt said. “And with him, they are in another galaxy.” The three-time FIFA player of the year scored in the 25th, 42nd and 49th minutes for a 3-0 lead and his 17th career hat trick for Barcelona, then added goals in the 58th and 84th minutes for the first five-goal game of his professional career. “We’ll never see a player like him again,” Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola said. “He is one of a kind.” The last time a player scored five goals in European soccer’s top club competition had been when Ajax’s Soren Lerby did it against Omonia in the old Champion Clubs’ Cup in 1979-80. “Messi is a joke. For me the best ever,” Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney wrote on Twitter. Messi scored his first goal when Xavi Hernandez’s long pass sent him in alone, he took a touch and chipped goalkeeper Bernd Leno with his left foot from 12 yards. On the second he cut across from the right after a pass from Andres Iniesta and sent a left-footed shot in from 14 yards through a crowd of defenders. He scored the third with a chip from 9 yards off his weaker right foot. Cesc Fabregas made a pass from just past midfield and Messi held off defender Daniel Schwaab as he took three touches. He became the first player to score four goals twice in the Champions League — he accomplished the feat against Arsenal two years ago —

when Leno batted a ball knocked toward the goal by a defender right to Messi, who poked the ball in with his left foot from an angle. Messi’s fifth was on a curling leftfooted shot from 19 yards. He has 48 goals for Barcelona this season, including 12 in the Champions League. He increased his Champions League career total to 49, tying Alfredo Di Stefano for fourth on the European Cup/ Champions League career list. “I can’t remember the last time I

scored five goals, so I’m very happy,” Messi said. “It’s nice to score five goals.” Just 24 years old, he has 228 goals for Barcelona and is seven from tying Cesar Rodriguez for the club’s career scoring record. Messi has seven hat tricks this season. “He’s the best. There is no other like him,” Guardiola said. “The numbers speak for themselves. One day he’ll score six. We’re very fortunate to have Messi, so we have to take advantage of him.” Substitute Cristian Tello added a pair of goals for Barcelona, which extended its home unbeaten streak to 50 games. Leverkusen became the first German club since 1964 to lose an aggregate series by nine goals. “What was important was to win,” Messi said. “That’s what we wanted to achieve, now we’re in the quarterfinals and we did it impressively.”

Indiana women’s soccer team arrives Photo by Christopher Tobutt

The Lionesses have landed – and are here to play football and spread the word of The Lord. FC Indiana, known as the Lionesses, are visiting Cayman for ten days for a football tournament. And as well as goals on the pitch, they hope to score some fans off it during their stay. Victoria Casey, 22 said: “We are going to be playing in a tournament against two of the Cayman Islands teams and a Jamaican team, and we’re here to play some good soccer and spread the gospel of Jesus Christ. “I believe we are playing the U20 Cayman Islands team, the full national team and the U20 Jamaican team. We are from Grace College - it’s a Christian University in Northern Indiana and the name of the team is Grace College team. Their coach, Michael Voss added: “We’re here for ten days and we’re going to be playing Elite FC, the Cayman Islands U20’s, and the

National Team. “We’re here for the Football Travel International Tournament and hoping to play some soccer games against some good teams. Its good to be in a place where there are some good facilities, and play some good teams.” While on Grand Cayman the team will be training on the beach in the mornings and at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex at 6 p.m. The team will also be playing friendly matches against our local women and will be looking at our local talent with the aim of signing a few to professional contracts. One of our local talent that is currently being scouted by FC Indiana is Shenel Gall who is currently away at university. Shenel will return home to attend the training camp, so that she may be assessed by Shek Borkowski, Head Coach of FC Indiana, and his coaching staff. Thiago Cunha, CIFA Women’s Technical Director, has expressed his delight at FC Indiana’s visit. “It is a wonderful opportunity for

our women’s clubs and proves that Caymanian women’s football is stepping up, as we have attracted professional clubs to our islands to scout our players. I am very happy for Shenel Gall being targeted by FC Indiana, as we have been working together to develop her skills since she was eleven years of age. This is also a fantastic opportunity for our women and girl players and coaches to come out to see a professional club train and play.” FC Indiana will play three games against Cayman Islands women’s teams, as follows, and admission to the matches is free of charge:
