Kevin Creary Leonard Antonio Ebanks was yesterday jailed for life after he was convicted of the murder of Tyrone Burrell.

After the verdict, Ebanks jumped to feet and demanded to be heard in court.

He said: “Today I am going to quote the words of the Police Commissioner because today is a grave day for justice in the Cayman Islands because your honour, you are sentencing an innocent man to life in prison.

“I did not kill that young man and I did not assist anyone in the killing of that young man.”

Jailing him for life, Justice Charles Quin, said: “I am satisfied beyond all reasonable doubt Leonard Ebanks is guilty of the murder of Tyrone Ebanks. And hereby sentence [him] to life in prison.”

Tyrone, 20, died from a single gunshot in September last year outside a house on Birch Tree Hill.

After a morning session, on Thursday, comprising the tabling of one privatemember’s motion, the tabling of the Cinematograph Law and a report by the Commission of Standards in Public Life, followed by debate on three questions, the assembly adjourned for lunch, recovening in the afternoon, when the alleged attack took place.

Observers would say nothing more than “a slapping” had occurred, but Mr Solomon, on Friday-morning’s “Crosstalk” radio show on Rooster, offered a brief description of the alleged event.

“I think I would leave it there for now because it is going to be a matter that goes before the courts,” he said. “I would say if there is a situation where the the Honourable Alden McLaughlin is willing to come forward and apologise in no flowery language, but a sincere apology, then I would definitely consider dropping those charges.

“That is the case as it occurred yesterday [Thursday] and now perhaps we can move on to the business of the day,” Mr Solomon said.

He declined to comment further

after Friday’s early LA session, saying through a spokesman that “I have nothing to add to what I have already said.”

Mr McLaughlin, who appeared on the floor of the LA about noon, denied the assault, but declined to say more.

“I did not assault anyone and have no further comment to make,” he told iNews.

The episode follows a 7 October 2009, incident when Mr McLaughlin, former Minister of Education, on the same morning radio show, was discussing the troubled construction of Cayman’s two new high schools.

Mr Solomon, previously the show’s co-host and recently elected to the LA, entered the studio, uninvited, during the live broadcast to challenge remarks by Mr McLaughlin that Mr Solomon’s family had benefited from the project.

“Definitely one thing reinforces the other one,” she said. “Both are addictions, and they’re bad addictions.”

At the time, murder squad detectives said the victim did have information relating to the murder of Damion Ming – who was killed the previous March in the very same yard in West Bay. Police said that if he had come to detectives with that information, he may never have been killed.

Tyrone was dropped off at the address by his mother and was attending a party. Not long later, he was dead.

On Friday in court Judge Quin said he believed that Ebanks had confessed to the murder to the Crown’s key witness, Alene White.

Ms White was the helper at the house where the murder took place.

The judge said he found her to be an honest and reliable witness. He also accepted Ebanks had motive, opportunity and possessed a gun.

The court heard Ms White say that about 7pm she heard a sound and went to investigate. During the investigation Ms. White said she saw the defendant’s bicycle on the ground, right beside the living room window.

Ms. White testified that she saw the body of Tyrone Burrell lying on the ground and she went over and tapped the body three times.

She told the police that while she was tidying a room inside her employer’s home she saw Ebanks again two days later and the defendant asked her what had happened.

Ms. White said she had the feeling that the defendant was there to confess to the killing.

She then said that the defendant lifted up his shirt and showed her a gun.

She said: “I saw the gun. It was a little .38 handgun.

Ms. White said that she went to the police station on the 26th September and identified the defendant.

The judge rejected Ebanks’ alibi that he was at home at the time of the shooting bathing with his wife because the two witnesses both put him very close to the scene of the murder a few seconds before and a few seconds after.

News of the World reporter slams exemployer LONDON (AP) — A News of the World reporter implicated in Britain’s phone hacking scandal has slammed Rupert Murdoch’s News International for his sacking from the tabloid, insisting he was innocent and unfairly dismissed.

Neville Thurlbeck’s comments Friday mark his first public defense of his role at the newspaper, which folded after 168 years under the weight of the scandal.

“I took no part in the matter which has led to my dismissal after 21 years of service,” Thurlbeck, 49, said in a statement. “I say this most emphatically and with certainty and confidence that the allegation which led to my dismissal will eventually be shown to be false.”

Thurlbeck’s name has long been linked to the scandal that has enveloped Britain’s press, and threatened Murdoch’s global media empire.

It has claimed the jobs of high-profile executives at News International, along with the prime minister’s communications director, Andy Coulson, and highranking officers of the Metropolitan Police Service.

Ultimately, it forced Murdoch to scupper his multibillion pound (dollar) bid for satellite broadcaster BSkyB. Thurlbeck — then the News of the World’s chief reporter — was arrested in April on suspicion of conspiring to intercept voicemail messages and released on bail.

He has since lost his job with News International, and on Sept. 13 filed an unfair dismissal claim against his previous employers at a London employment tribunal.

Sub-drug smugglers would stretch police

Local police are unprepared to combat drug smugglers operating semi-submersible seacraft, it was revealed today.

“I agree that it would stretch our capabilities, but intelligence sharing with neighbouring jurisdictions would help combat this,” said Chief Inspector Patrick Beersingh.

“We have heard of the semisubmersibles, and seen some reports. We had some information about boats that are not typical canoes,” he said, referring to the traditional long, low crafts smuggling drugs and firearms into Cayman from Jamaica.

The submarines, he said, “are usually out of South America, but there is nothing to suggest they are operating in our waters,” Mr Beersingh said.

Reports out of Florida on Wednesday described only the second US Coast Guard interdiction of a drug-smuggling submarine in the western Caribbean, spotted by a military C-130 Hercules aircraft. The pilot radioed the Cutter Mohawk, which tracked the boat and detained its crew.

The Coast Guard’s first interdiction of a drug smuggling vessel in the Western Caribbean Sea came on 13 July.

Coast Guard officials, according to the report, say the subs, less than 100 feet long, are usually built in South America and operated by no more than a handful of crew. Each boat carries as much as 10 metric tons of cargo within a range of 2,000 miles.

The “self-propelled semisubmersibles” are often used in the eastern Pacific to move drugs, the Coast Guard said, and are designed to sink rapidly as authorities appear, making seizure of the vessels and cargo difficult.

Cutter Mohawk’s commanding officer said the vessels, a relatively new development in drug smuggling, were “a serious operational challenge” because of their size, agility, enormous cargoes and near invisibility, The semi-submersibles have been operating off the Pacific coast of South America for more than a decade, moving at least one-third of Colombia’s annual production of 800 tons of cocaine, although authorities in Bogota have said as much as 70% of the cocaine leaving

the country’s Pacific coast is aboard semi-submersibles. One US Senator estimated that the vessels would ship up to 480 metric tons of cocaine this year.

In the last five years, US and other coast guard ships between Mexico and Colombia have detected nearly 200 of these subs. Between 2000 and 2007, only 23 of were spotted, but as they have become more popular, more than 70 are detected annually.

“They are usually used to haul drugs to other destinations, said RCIPS intelligence chief Superintendent Kurt Walton. “They usually carry cocaine, which, at $360 million per year, is a pretty good business.”

While he said Cayman had not yet confronted a semi-submersible threat, he acknowledged they would prove difficult to detect underwater, but pointed to Wednesday’s report involving the C-130.

“We do have maritime and air patrols already in place, and haven’t seen any evidence they have been near us,” he said.

“I have read some of the literature, though, and they don’t submerge to any great extent,” he said, referring to reports that the vessels are usually built of fibreglass with a conning tower and exhaust pipes protruding above the water.

Ophelia’s eye has become even more distinct.

Her initial intensity has been increased to 100 knots making Ophelia a category 3 hurricane on the Saffir Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale.

Ophelia is now the third major hurricane of this season.

There is a strong belief that Ophelia has reached its peak intensity and only small fluctuations are expected within the next few days.

Ophelia should be moving to encounter cold waters resulting in her weakening and should become a posttropical cyclone as it moves southeast of Newfoundland.

The centre of Tropical Storm Philippe can now clearly be seen, as a number of over night microwave images suggest that the previously estimated centre dissipated. The new centre has been formed farther north and closer to the deep convection.

Philippe is still gaining some latitude as he moves around the southwestern

fringe of a mid-level anticyclone.

However a new anticyclone is already building further north and should force Philippe on a west-northwestward direction over the next 48 hours.

Man survives for days after car plunges off cliff the crash and there were no details on how the cars ended up off the road, said Savage.

David Lavau’s daughter, Lisa Lavau, told KCAL-TV her family had not heard from her father for several days and reported him missing to police.

Authorities told Lisa Lavau that her father had used his debit card at a nearby grocery store, so she decided to conduct a search of the area along with her daughter and brother.

“We stopped at every ravine, and looked over every hill and then my

brother got out of the car and we kept screaming and the next thing we heard Dad saying ‘help, help,’ and there he was,” Lisa Lavau said.

Russell Brand to be 1st guest on new ‘Rosie’ show CHICAGO (AP) — Rosie O’Donnell gets her wish: Russell Brand will be the first guest on her new talk show.

The Oprah Winfrey Network announced Thursday that the comedian and actor will appear on the Oct. 10 premiere of “The Rosie Show.”

O’Donnell has said she’s fascinated with Brand and called him a genius. She previously said she would love to have him as her first guest.

The show will air on the Oprah Winfrey Network, which promises Brand will be “one of many notable celebrities” during the show’s first

two weeks.

O’Donnell will tape in Chicago’s Harpo Studios, former home of “The Oprah Winfrey Show” until it ended in May after 25 years.

US fugitive wants to serve time in Portugal LISBON, Portugal (AP) — An American killer and alleged hijacker who was a fugitive for 41 years should serve the rest of his jail time in Portugal where he was captured instead of being extradited to the United States, his lawyer says.

George Wright, 68, deserves to serve the remainder of his 15- to 30year New Jersey murder sentence in Portugal because he has lived in the country for decades, has a Portuguese wife and grown Portuguese children, said the lawyer, Manuel Luis Ferreira.

When the Rollover policy was implemented it wasn’t just a can of worms that was opened, but a whole bucket load.

Now, seven years later, Government has finally decided enough is enough and the system needs an urgent overhaul. And I say about time too.

The for-and-against arguments will rage on in all walks of life for many months after the Legislative Assembly rubber stamps Premier McKeeva Bush’s plans to allow expatriats to stay in Cayman for two years after they hit the seven-year barrier.

And yesterday, as revealed in iNews, McKeeva has another plan up his sleeve. His shirts must be pretty big as he keeps pulling out more and more ideas to improve and enhance our economy.

Bush’s latest offering is to give a 10-year work permit to senior managers and high profile companies – effectively securing the best overseas talent for an entire decade without the constant worry of permit extensions hanging over their heads.

The policy needs changing, and hats off to McKeeva for doing so. Let’s hope that by encouraging more people to come, start new businesses and improve existing ones, the knock-on effect will be beneficial to the whole of Cayman.

Deadline looms for tobacco registration Cayman’s Health Ministry is reminding tobacco dealers that Tuesday, 1 November 2011 is the deadline to apply for renewal of registration for 2012.

“According to the Tobacco Law, everyone dealing with tobacco products must register annually and display the Certificate of Registration (similar to a Trade and Business License).. Also, failing to renew the registration in time will attract late fees,” Medical Officer of Health Dr. Kiran Kumar advised.

Applications submitted after 1 November and up to 31 December will attract a late fee of an additional 50% of the registration fee. Applications

submitted after 31 December and up to 31 January will attract a late fee of an additional 100% of the registration fee.

If no application for renewal is received by 31 January, dealers will have to cease operation for 12 months before submitting a new application.

The annual registration renewal fees are as follows: CI$500 for a retailer; CI$750 for a cigar bar, and CI$5,000 for a wholesale distributor or importer.

The following documents are needed for renewal of registration: A renewal application form (Form 3); a current Trade and Business License Certificate; and, if there were any changes in dealership since the last registration such

as contact information, location, ownership or trade of products, Form 1 (application for registration as a tobacco dealer) as well.

A total of 138 tobacco dealers registered last year and the Hon. Mark Scotland, Minister of Health, thanked the business community for their support in implementing the provisions of the tobacco legislation: “Business owners have been very accommodating of the changes and we hope to see this trend continue.”

“If anyone has any doubts about the legislation, or if anyone is still selling tobacco products without a registration certificate please contact the Public Health Department to avoid prosecution,” he added.

Launch of National Youth Policy 2011

Minister for Youth, Hon. Mark Scotland, joined the Premier, Hon McKeeva Bush, in announcing the launch of the National Youth Policy 2011- a document which serves as the Cayman Islands’ Government’s guide for the formulation of youth legislation, sub-policy, regulations and programmes.

The document was presented to Mr. Scotland by Jenny Manderson, chairperson of the Cayman Islands National Youth Commission- the body responsible for putting the policy together.

Goals described in it include the development of a national cultural policy which seeks to establish a strong cultural and social identity for youth, and also to produce, “well-rounded individuals who are able to contribute to the success of society through an education system which ensures adequate learning opportunities.”

During the official announcement, Hon. Premier McKeeva Bush stressed the need for social development to complement the economic development: “Over the past few decades we experienced rapid population growth and development. As a nation, we experienced economic success. But… it wasn’t all good for our young people as our growth also brought inevitable cultural dilution and loss of identity,” he said.

“Today’s launch of the National

Youth Policy 2011 represents an important milestone. Through the leadership of the National Youth Commission, young women and men from across the country have participated in discussions which have allowed them to talk about their situations, and the needs and visions they have for the future.

“As such, this document… envisages a future for our youth in which they will be full partners in a democratic, united, peaceful and prosperous society,” he said.

Mr. Scotland began his address by reference to recent negative events: “Being young should be the best years of your life. But, as the Cayman Islands experienced a terrible few weeks in September with the senseless murders of five young men, we were all faced with the fact that somehow, some young people have a very different experience,” he said.

However it was also important to remember that the majority of young people here are willing and able to become “productive young citizens,” the Minister went on.

Referring to a student survey contained in the document Mr. Scotland said that young people, “tell us that crime and violence is of great concern to them. They tell us they want to do better in school, and they tell us that they want to be part of the community. They pose questions and offer solutions, but most of all they ask for our help.”

“The new document addressed all these concerns,” Mr. Scotland said.

His ministry would immediately

start to realise some of these goals by appointing an Inter-Ministerial Committee on Youth. “The work of this body would be to improve coordination and collaboration between different agencies, helping to ensure that resources went where they were needed most.

“Other initiatives that will immediately flow from this policy are the development of multi-faceted national anti-violence programme which will include initiatives to deal with bullying and conflict resolution techniques,” Mr. Scotland added.

Finally, acknowledging Caribbean Youth Day’s theme, “One CaribbeanSee the future through the eyes of our youth,” Mr. Scotland threw out a few challenges to the community as a whole. His first challenge was to the business community, to support their employees who volunteer for work on youth programmes, by allowing them to work flexi-time.

“The second challenge goes to our non-governmental partners who provide youth services, especially the churches. Expand your community outreach programmes. Go out into your communities, find out who the young people at risk are, get to know their families and invite them into your programmes.

“The final challenge goes to parents, family members and neighbours. Spend time with young people: Listen to their fears, doubts and dreams. Nothing can replace simply spending time with your children,” he said.

Reggae pioneer Leonard Dillon dies in Jamaica KINGSTON, Jamaica (AP) — The leader of the pioneering reggae group The Ethiopians has died in Jamaica. Leonard Dillon was 68.

Daughter Patrice Dillon says her father died Wednesday at her home of lung and prostate cancer.

She says Dillon had been diagnosed with cancer in June and underwent surgery to remove a brain tumor earlier this year.

Leonard Dillon began his career using the stage name Jack Sparrow in the early 1960s. He recorded a series of ska songs, including “Bull Whip,” which featured a young Bob Marley on backing vocals.

Dillon later formed The Ethiopians, a trio whose best known hits were “Train to Skaville” and “Everything Crash.”

Dillon is survived by seven children.

Patrice says: “I was prepared, when I found him this morning, I knew I saw my dad for the last time.

I am just happy that he died here.

He will be missed, I know it will take one day at a time to go on,” she said about the father of seven who has always been there for her.

He could be aggressive at times to us kids, but there was no doubting his love for us,” said Patrice.

Singer Lloyd Parks found out about his friend’s death after getting a phone call from a promoter in Australia wanting Dillon to perform.

He contacted Patrice intending to pass on the information when he got the shocking news.

Commenting on his colleague’s death, Parks said Dillon will be missed. “He was really talented and had great ideas. A lot of people might not know it, but he was a cornerstone internationally.”

Parks shared that Dillon was a humorous person and always had him cracking up.

According to the bio posted on Dillon’s Facebook page: The Ethiopians were one of Jamaica’s most influential vocal groups. The duo, which featured Leonard Dillon and Stephen Taylor, was at the forefront of the transition from ska to rocksteady. In 1964, Dillon met Peter Tosh, who admired his original material and introduced him to the other members of the Wailers. In turn, the Wailers brought Dillon to Clement “Coxsone” Dodd’s Studio One, where he made his first recordings under the name Jack Sparrow.

Since these first recordings, Dillon has gone on to record with the likes of Vincent Chin, Prince Buster, Joe Gibbs, Bob Andy, Rupie Edwards,

and Lee “Scratch” Perry.

In 2009, he returned to the studio with the legendary Jamaican vocal team The Silvertones to record his album Original Hitmakers From Jamaica, Volume 1: Leonard Dillon The Ethiopian.

The Ethiopians were known for songs such as Hong Kong Flu, Fire Deh A Muss Muss Tail, Everything Crash, Nyah Nuh Want Nuh Baptism, and I’m Gonna Take Over Now.

Statement by the Minister of Education for World Teachers’ Day

World Teachers’ Day is celebrated annually on the 5th October in more than 100 countries. Today I join with communities around the world in using this day to honour and thank our educators -- some of the most influential people in our children’s lives and our own lives.

This year’s theme for World Teachers’ Day is: Teachers for gender equality.

The United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) and Education International (EI) chose this theme because, “Despite the teaching profession being made up largely of women, inequality remains an issue. Even if measures to ensure equality are enshrined into the policies and constitutions of many states, for millions of female teachers, the goals remain unfulfilled.

The teaching profession, both men and women, must unite and urge governments to implement their

commitments,” (www.5oct.org).

This important theme ties in well with the work of this government and its movement on the Gender Equality Law which was recently passed and will come into effect in January 2012.

The Gender Equality Law will provide the legal framework needed to ensure that both males and females are treated fairly in the workplace and will not be discriminated against, especially in regards to their gender – this will of course apply to the teaching profession as well as all other professions. I would like to commend my colleague, Minister Adam, and his team in bringing this most important legislation to fruition, and I am proud to say that the Cayman Islands are already embracing the gender equality theme by implementing the necessary legislation.

Teaching is an occupation

that should be honoured and respected. After all, “Teaching is the profession that teaches all other professions,” (Anonymous quote).

Too often, however, our educators are undervalued.

I encourage everyone to honour our teachers. Thank them for their influence and contributions to your lives and your children’s lives. Show appreciation towards them, especially on this day, World Teacher’s Day. On behalf of the Ministry of Education I would like to thank each and every educator in the Cayman Islands for their hard work and dedication to our children and our future. Cayman’s own Olympian Ronald Forbes has decided it’s his turn to give back to the community by inspiring the youth to stay on the right “track”.

Mr. Forbes, a former 110 metre Olympic hurdler, approached the Ministry of Health, Environment, Youth, Sports and Culture to propose his views on positive national development through a series of talks.

Forbes will be visiting youngsters in schools and young adults in Caymanian communities over a three week period.

He will emphasise the importance of a sound education and building self-esteem and self worth.

James Myles, Youth Services Coordinator of the Youth Services Unit said, “I think this is something that all pro-social agents should be doing.

“The Ministry asked me to coordinate this and we will be doing this for any of the other pro-social agents or sports ambassadors who are willing to get involved in this way.

Mr. Myles went on to say that they are already seeing positive effects from the students that have spoken to Ronald.

“I am already seeing some profound effects. Ronald’s words might be the

words of inspiration that the youth of this country needs. I hope they find a positive message through him.”

Ronald added, “I am very proud of my accomplishments, from where I began up until present day.

“One of the things I hope to give back is to help mold and to guide some of those who don’t know the answers and need help to figure it out.

Ronald is currently on recovery time and begins off-season training in October. He begins competing in indoor circuit races in mid January preparing himself for the World Indoor Championships.

“I also hope to help them strive to either attain what I did or to be better role models in society. Especially when it comes to sports related activities, I’d like them to be a better athlete than I ever was.

Ronald will be attending the Light House School on Monday and continuing the week with the various houses of John Gray High School.

His final week of talks will conclude with the houses of Clifton Hunter High School and ending on Friday with the schools of Cayman Brac.

Handling grief when a baby dies

One of the most stressful and painful events in a parent’s life is the loss of a newborn baby.

The nine months up until the delivery date are filled with hopes, plans, dreams, picking out the right name, preparing for the nursery, buying baby clothes, and sharing the good news with one’s family and friends.

Much emotional energy is spent in this new adventure of bringing forth a new life into the world.

When death occurs, whether over the course of several weeks, or days, those plans and dreams come to a screeching halt. iNews looks into resources for handling the death of babies with Ms. Annie-Mae Roffey who headed up the Littlest Angels grief support group back in 1997.

Newly bereaved parents need to understand that they are not alone and that their needs should be considered first.

There are various ways to help cope and parents should know, that if they wish to, they can see their baby, name the baby or take a keepsake.

Even the closure of having the baby tested and examined to determine the cause of death can help.

“Many people do not consider the loss of pregnancy before birth to be a death. But for those that do, there are women who are part of the support group that have experienced these sorts of situations and can talk and empathise with you.”

“Some women who experience a loss don’t want to talk about it for days, weeks and sometimes even years after the experience, but the group is there for those who want to talk when they are ready.

“The baby has rights too and depending on when the loss may have happened, the child can even have a funeral.” said Ms. Roffey Rights included for the child are, to be recognised, to be named, to be seen touched and held, to be memorialised and to even be put to rest with dignity.

Ms. Roffey explained that the support group has seen women who don’t have their significant other or family member to help them through this time.

The group then tries to help the grieving parent to organise the memorial and burial for their baby.

She said, “Church’s and Bodden’s Funeral Homes have been extremely helpful in the past with helping us to organise funeral services if a burial is required.

“Sometimes we see women who don’t have husbands or families, and on top of that, have financial issues, so they can not afford to take on the funeral arrangements and we have been able to help with that too.”

as a reminder of the child.

The aim of the group is to give bereaved parents the chance to share their feelings about the loss and to help them with a positive resolution to their grief.

The group will provide memorialisation, one-on-one grief counselling, pastoral care, funeral arrangements at no cost, educational resources and group support meetings.

Half an hour later he came into the Agency sitting -room, where the others were waiting, with a quick step and sparkling eyes, and, with the tone and manner of a young conqueror, announced, “Dr. Gaston, and all of you, I am going to marry Annet. We are engaged.”

Dr. Gaston, who was standing, sat down as though struck down.

Miss Lois jumped up, and began to laugh and cry in a breath. Père Michaux, who was sitting with his injured foot resting on a stool, ground his hands down suddenly on the arms of his chair with a sharp displeasure visible for an instant on his face. But only for an instant; it was gone before any one saw it.

“Oh, my darling boy!” Said Miss Lois, with her arms round Rast’s neck. “I always knew you would.

You are made for each other, and always were. Now we shall have you both with us always, thank the Lord!” Then she sobbed again, and took a fresh and tighter hold of him.

“I’ll take the boys, dear; you need not be troubled with them. And I’ll come over here and live, so that you and Annet can have the churchhouse; it’s in much better repair; only there should be a new chimney.

The dearest wish of my heart is now fulfilled, and I am quite ready to die.”

Rast was kind always; it was simply impossible for him to say or do anything, which could hurt the feelings of any one present. Such a course is sometimes contradictory, since those who are absent likewise have their feelings; but it is always at the moment agreeable. He kissed Miss Lois affectionately, thanked her, and led her to her chair; nor did he stop there, but stood beside her with her hand in his until she began to recover her composure, wipe her eyes, and smile. Then he went across to Dr. Gaston, his faithful and early friend.

“Is there any one else you would prefer to have Rast marry? Answer me that.” “No, no; certainly not.”

“Is there any one you would prefer to have Anne marry?”

“Why need she marry at all?” said the chaplain, boldly, breaking through the chain of questions closing round him. “I am sure you yourself are a bright example, Miss Hinsdale, of the merits of single life.”

But, to his surprise, Miss Lois

turned upon him.

“What! Have Anne live through my loneliness, my always-beingmisunderstood-ness, my general sense of a useless ocean within me, its breaking waves dashed high on a stern and rock-bound coast?”

She said, quoting vehemently from the only poem she knew. “Never!”

While Dr. Gaston was still gazing at her, Rast turned to Père Michaux.

“I am sure of your approval,” he said, smiling confidently. “I have had no doubt of that.”

“Haven’t you?” said the priest, dryly.

“No, sir: you have always been my friend.”

“And I shall continue to be,” said Père Michaux. But he rose as he spoke, and hobbled into the hall, closing the door behind him.

Tita was hurrying through the garden on her way from the heights; he waited for her. “Where have you been?” he asked, sternly.

The child seemed exhausted, her breath came in panting gasps; her skirt was torn, her hair streaming, and the dark red hue of her face was changed to a yellow pallor.

“I have run and run, I have followed and followed, I have listened with my ear on the ground; I have climbed trees to look, I have torn a path through bushes, and I have not found them,” she said, huskily, a slight froth on her dry lips as she spoke, her eyes bright and feverish.

“They are here,” said Père Michaux; “they have been at home some time. What can you have been about, Angélique?”

“I have told you,” said the child, rolling her apron tightly in her small brown hands. “I followed his track. He went down the north path.

I traced him for a mile; then I lost him. In the fir wood. Then I crept, and looked, and listened.”

“You followed Rast, then, when I told you to go to Anne! Enough.

I thought, at least, you were quick, Tita; but it seems you are dull— dull as an owl,” said the priest, turning away.

Taking a vacation can be exciting and fun, but it can also be exhausting or lonely for some. Retirees need to keep in mind some simple but helpful tips for making their holiday more enjoyable and less stressful.

1. Keep your focus on the reason for taking a vacation. If you are taking one during a festive season, no matter what your religion is, it is a time of celebration and spiritual refreshment. The beginning of a new year can be a time of new commitments, new beginnings and new opportunities. Festive vacations offer a reminder and a chance to reorder our priorities and make the most of each day. Adjusting our perspective in light of spiritual teachings can bring brightness and hope into our daily lives throughout the coming year.

2. Pace yourself. Many people arrive at the actual holiday too exhausted from preparations to actually enjoy the day. Many people find it helpful to limit the amount of time and energy spent on any part of the preparations for the vacation at a given time. Some people structure their days to shop for two hours, then rest for one hour, and then do another task. It is also important to pace yourself in terms of activities and events. Sometimes, what we need most is control over our time and activities. If you are becoming overwhelmed by the array of events and activities and you find that your schedule is filling rapidly, you might do well to make some choices. Limiting your activities to the most important events might help you pace yourself and prevent the exhaustion that can drain the fun from everything.

3. Don’t be alone unless you want to be. Taking a vacation can be very sad and depressing for those who find themselves alone. If you don’t have family or friends nearby with whom you plan to spend part to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

Monday - Saturday of the holiday, you can still spend the day with others. Check in your community for gatherings of others who would otherwise be alone. Even better, find a community opportunity to help others on the holiday. Most communities have programmes that offer meals to the homeless and needy. You can be with others and feel wonderful about the way you spend the day by volunteering to help with preparation and serving of the meals.

4. Don’t lose sight of the budget.

Overspending when off on vacation is very easy. But it can create a lot of stress when the bills start to arrive afterwards, especially if you have taken your holiday during a festive season. It is so much fun making purchases of gifts for children and grandchildren that the budget can easily be forgotten. Be honest and realistic about what you can afford to spend on gifts and entertaining.

Then stick to the budget. Keep in mind that a modestly priced gift that fits the recipient can mean more than the most expensive new thing available. Some families manage spending by setting clear limits on the cost of gifts for the adults in the family. This allows them to spend

more on the younger children. Be creative in thinking about holiday spending and try to keep your focus on the right gift for each individual rather than the most expensive.

5. Don’t lose sight of your dietary needs. Many of us have special dietary needs as we grow older.

Whether we are just eating smart or we are watching sugars, fats and cholesterol, many of us need to maintain a healthy diet especially during the holidays. In most cases, it is okay to splurge a bit at a festive dinner or party if we adjust our diets during the rest of the day to keep our overall diet within bounds.

Remember that making yourself sick by ignoring your dietary needs will not make the vacation more enjoyable for you or those around you.

I hope all the above has been helpful.

Get the greatest possible enjoyment and renewal from your vacation whenever it is. By keeping things in perspective and monitoring spending and diet, you will probably enjoy the holidays more. Osteoporosis prevention - PART 2

Continuing our article on Osteoporosis please see Part 1 Diagnosis from 30 September PREVENTION OSTEOPOROSIS PREVENTION— Some of the most important t reatments for preventing osteoporosis include diet, exercise, and not smoking. These recommendations apply to men and women.

Diet — An optimal diet for preventing or treating osteoporosis includes consuming an adequate number of calories as well as optimal amounts of calcium and vitamin D, which are essential in helping to maintain proper bone formation and density.

Calcium intake — Experts recommend that premenopausal women and men consume at least 1000 mg of calcium per day; this includes calcium in foods and beverages plus calcium supplements.

Postmenopausal women should consume 1200 mg of calcium per day (total of diet plus supplements).

However, you should not take more than 2000 mg calcium per day due to the possibility of side effects.

The main dietary sources of calcium include milk and other dairy products, such as cottage cheese, yogurt, or hard cheese, and green vegetables, such as kale and broccoli. A rough method of estimating dietary calcium intake is to multiply the number of dairy servings consumed each day by 300 mg. One serving is 8 oz of milk or yogurt, 1 oz of hard cheese, or 16 oz of cottage cheese.

Calcium supplements (calcium carbonate or calcium citrate) may be suggested for women who cannot get enough calcium in their diet. Calcium doses greater than 500 mg/day should be taken in divided doses (eg, once in morning and evening).

Vitamin D intake — Experts recommend that men over 70 years and postmenopausal women consume 800 International Units (IU) of vitamin D each day. This dose appears to reduce bone loss and

fracture rate in older women and men who have adequate calcium intake (described above). Although the optimal intake has not been clearly established in premenopausal women or in younger men with osteoporosis, 400 to 600 International Units of vitamin D daily is generally suggested.

Milk supplemented with vitamin D is the primary dietary source of dietary vitamin D; it contains approximately 100 IU per cup. Experts recommend vitamin D supplementation for all patients with osteoporosis whose intake of vitamin D is below 400 IU per day. This is the amount found in a daily multivitamin or a calcium/ vitamin D supplement.

Protein supplements — Protein supplements may be recommended in some people to ensure sufficient protein intake. This may be particularly important for those who have already had an osteoporotic fracture.

Alcohol, caffeine, and salt intake — Drinking alcohol excessively (more than three drinks a day) can increase the risk of fracture due to an increased risk of falling, poor nutrition, etc, so it should be avoided.

Restricting caffeine or salt has not been proven to prevent bone loss in people who consume an adequate

amount of calcium.

Exercise — Weight-bearing exercises can improve bone mass in premenopausal women and help to maintain bone density for women after menopause. Physical activity reduces the risk of hip fracture in older women as a result of increased muscle strength. Most experts recommend exercising for at least 30 minutes three times per week.

The benefits of exercise are quickly

lost when a person stops exercising.

A regular, weight-bearing exercise regimen that a person enjoys improves the chances that the person will continue it over the long term.

Smoking — Stopping smoking is strongly recommended for bone health because smoking cigarettes is known to speed bone loss. One study suggested that women who smoke one pack per day throughout adulthood have a 5 to 10 percent reduction in bone density by menopause, resulting in an increased risk of fracture.

Falls — Falling significantly increases the risk of osteoporotic fractures in older adults. Taking measures to prevent falls can decrease the risk of fractures. Such measures may include the following:

1 Removing loose items in the home that could lead to tripping, slipping, and falling.

2 Providing adequate lighting in all areas inside and around the home.

3 Avoiding walking on slippery surfaces, such as ice or wet or polished floors.

4 Avoiding walking in unfamiliar areas outside.

5 Reviewing drug regimens to replace medications that may increase the risk of falls.

6 Visiting an ophthalmologist or optometrist regularly to get the optimal eye glasses.

MEDICATIONS — Prolonged therapy with and/or high doses of certain medications can increase bone loss. The use of these medications should be monitored by a healthcare provider and decreased or discontinued when possible. Such medications include the following:

Internet fax (also known as email fax, online fax and digital fax) utilizes an Internet fax service provider to convert a facsimile transmission into a digital file that can be received via email and vice versa. Internet fax services bridge the gap between the older fax technology, which is well established in today’s business environment, and email transmission of documents. In the simplest terms, when you sign up with an Internet fax service, you will be assigned a dedicated fax phone number that will convert incoming faxes to email attachments that are automatically sent to your email address. The majority of these services also allow you to send attachments (like Word documents, PDF’s, or pictures) to physical fax numbers that are received just as if you had sent them using a standard fax machine. Most Internet fax services will send you your documents in a number of different file formats, such as TIF or PDF files.

The advantages of using Internet faxing are that the users can send and receive as many faxes simultaneously or send all faxes instantly. There is no complexity of a conventional fax machine and those never-ending paper jams. The technology is quick and even cheaper than traditional fax messaging.

Most online fax services support high-level encryption technology. Furthermore, you can designate which email addresses faxes are sent to, which is significantly more secure than having sensitive documents sit in a shared fax machine.

Risk factors for cervical cancer are similar to the risk factors for HPV The Cayman Islands Cancer Society is observing September as Cervical Cancers/HPV Awareness Month. Nearly two decades ago, experts discovered a relationship between infection with HPV (human papillomavirus) and cervical cancer.

In the first of a of a two part series we will discuss what every woman and girl should know about HPV and cervical cancer.

The cervix is part of the female reproductive system. It is the lower part of the uterus (womb) that widens during childbirth to allow the passage of the fetus.

Cervical cancer is the diagnosis when the cells lining the cervix reproduce and divide abnormally.

A preventable disease?

Cervical cancer is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers in women in the Caribbean and one of the leading causes of death from cancer in women in the region. Often these women are in the prime of their lives with families to take care of. The question can however be asked are many of these deaths needless?

Almost 100% of all cases of cervical cancer can be attributed to one cause – exposure to a sexually transmitted form of the human papilloma virus (HPV).Most people who have ever experienced intimate sexual contact with another person will have been exposed to this virus and will have had an “active” HPV infection at some point in their lives. For most people the body’s immune system kicks into action and the infection is eliminated from the body often without the infected person ever knowing they had the virus. In a few people, sometimes because their immune system is otherwise compromised, the virus persists and remains. It is in persons with persistent HPV infections that cancer can develop, often 10 – 20 years after the initial infection.

Early age of sexual exploration and intimate sexual contact, multiple sexual partners over a lifetime especially if those partners have also had multiple partners.

The more times a woman has been pregnant the more likely she is to develop cervical cancer especially if more than one man is the father of her children. Additionally women who smoke are twice as likely to develop the disease as are women who have had a mother or sister diagnosed with cervical cancer. Long-term use of the oral contraceptive pill will also increase risk.

How to lower your risk for cervical cancer Women can therefore substantially lower their risk by abstaining from initial sexual contact for as long as possible, remaining in a monogamous relationship and avoiding tobacco products. Women can also lower their risk by having a Pap smear on a regular basis – at least once every two – three years or more frequently if recommended by a doctor and by getting vaccinated with the HPV vaccines; either Gardasil or Cervarix (this ideally should be done before sexual initiation). This will be further discussed in a future article.

The cells on the surface of the cervix can become abnormal before they become malignant (cancerous), a condition known as cervical dysplasia. A Pap smear can identify these changes allowing treatment to occur at a stage before cancer has developed.

Should cervical cancer develop, it often does so without any early warning signs or symptoms. As the disease progresses signs that you might notice are abnormal bleeding e.g. between periods or after sexual intercourse, or for those people who no longer have a period, there may be new bleeding. You may also observe an abnormal discharge that might have an odour associated with it.

Symptoms that you might feel are discomfort during intercourse and pelvic pain. It is important to remember that these are also signs and symptoms of other medical conditions, so consult your doctor if you notice any of them.

Public Health advises on Chickenpox Public Health officials have confirmed clusters of chickenpox cases in two schools in the past week and are asking parents to keep sick children home to stop a further spread.

“We are monitoring the disease and our school nurses are in regular contact with schools so the affected children can be kept home until the lesions are crusted, which usually occurs in 5-7 days time,” said Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Kiran Kumar.

“We also met the school authorities and organized to offer vaccination at the affected schools. School authorities will be communicating this to the parents to get their unimmunised children vaccinated or to get a booster dose if they wish,” he added.

Children in the Cayman Islands are generally immunised against chickenpox at the age of twelve months.

The chickenpox vaccine has been part of the local immunization schedule since 2000.

“The public need not be alarmed as about 75 - 100 cases are reported annually in the Cayman Islands with fluctuations. As of this month, there have already been 52 reported cases

with half of them in children under the age of 15. This is a sharp rise from last year’s total of 29 cases but still far less than the 104 cases reported for 2009.

“There will be many more unreported cases. People who had chickenpox already will have natural immunization.

However, for persons who have not had chickenpox, we recommend that you get vaccinated,” Dr. Kumar noted.

For the public’s convenience the General Practice Clinic, at the Cayman Islands Hospital will be offering the vaccine on Saturday 1 October, 2011 between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. (no appointments necessary). As usual, parents can have their children immunised at any district Health Centre or Public Health Clinic.

England manager Martin Johnson says his side will go all out for victory in their crucial Pool B World Cup showdown with Scotland today.

Johnson spoke of his regret over the incident and when asked whether the situation had been an embarrassment for England, he said: “Paul and David did what they did in the heat and confusion of a Test.

“I don’t suspend guys lightly. We regret what we did and it was wrong.

“In the heat of a World Cup match these guys have made a mistake and they have paid for it.”

Meanwhile, Scotland full-back Chris Paterson says he is unconcerned about the World Cup match balls following the furore with Alred and Stridgeon.

Windy conditions have caused difficulties for kickers so far, but Paterson has no complaints with the match balls which have caused such controversy.

“We’ve trained with the balls since June or July and we get on and train with it,” said Paterson.

“As long as they stay on the tee I’m trying my best, to be honest.”

Scotland head coach Robinson preferred to focus on his side, rather than comment on the situation in the opposition camp.

Robinson, England head coach from September 2004 to November 2006, said: “We’ve got to take care of what we’re about.

“It’s a hard enough job for us worrying about what, as opposed to worrying about the opposition and what they’re up to. It’s about us.

“I really hope it’s another cracking test match. For us, it’s about finding the answers to breaking down this England team and if we do that, we have the players to finish off.”

Carlos Tevez maintains he has nothing to apologise to Roberto Mancini about and believes his team-mates will support his version of events.

Manager Mancini said Tevez refused to come on against Bayern Munich and will not feature for Manchester City again.

The striker blamed “confusion on the bench”, adding he was “ready to play”.

Mancini chose not to comment on the matter on Friday but received strong backing from Manchester United counterpart Sir Alex Ferguson.

Tevez believes the players who were alongside him on the bench on Tuesday will back his story, despite telling Sky Sports later that evening: “I didn’t feel right to play, so I didn’t.”

James Milner, Aleksandar Kolarov, Edin Dzeko and Pablo Zabaleta were on the bench when the confrontation took place.

Tevez, 27, has been suspended for two weeks by the club pending an investigation into the incident, which happened in the second half of the 2-0 Champions League defeat by Bayern.

Ferguson endorsed Mancini’s handling of the affair at his Friday news conference.

“Roberto has shown his strength of character, his strength of management and that is important,” said Ferguson.

“There is nobody more important than the manager at a football club.”
