Bush meets Sir Richard to talk about air links Tad Stoner tad.stoner@ieyenews.com

Premier McKeeva Bush has held toplevel talks with British billionaire Sir Richard Branson about bringing Virgin Atlantic flights directly into Grand Cayman. The two huddled at a secret George Town location last week to discuss Cayman ambitions to boost European air links, and the potential for expanding Virgin Atlantic’s eight routes between London’s Gatwick Airport and the Caribbean. Premier McKeeva Bush agreed Virgin Atlantic could not fly directly to Grand Cayman, but left open the potential for code sharing from Jamaica. “There were people here from [Virgin],” Mr Bush told iNews Cayman on Wednesday, “and I am talking to them.” Both Mr Bush and Sir Richard agreed to “think about”‘ the project, although Mr Bush conceded on Wednesday that the airline could not land at Owen Roberts International Airport under current conditions. We humans, specially

young people are consumed with technology, and young people have stopped communicating with each other. “Its going to be a web, made out of coconut mesh, that’s covering the whole world, with a spider over America, and a snake over Africa, and the spider bites the snakes head off and wears the crown.”

I pray that the Lord will give them His blessings and the strength to carry on the good work that they are doing. I am happy to be around them as they are a friendly and loving group of people.” ~ Turner Myles

Instead of buying a red rose, Luelan Bodden is giving his wife a very special Valentines gift - a giant pink rose made from the insides of conch shells. It’s the 20th conch sculpture that Mr. Bodden, 43, an electrician by day and artist by night, has made over the past two years. Other recent conch wonders include a huge wolf’s head, the idea of which came to him in a dream, he says, and a special (pink) Blue Marlin. “It took me five days to make it, and three days of sketching it, trying to figure out how to make it,” he said. “I’m fascinated with the different shades of pinks. It kind of reminds me of romance,” he added. “I use an electric grinder with a diamond blade on it. “We men have to try to do more for our girlfriends or wives. We have to make more effort producing in the gifts than them- they receive. “This is my way of showing my wife that I appreciate her - to show her I can actually build her a flower without buying one,” he said. LOS ANGELES (AP) — A judge has finalised Katy Perry and Russell Brand’s divorce, although the pair won’t be legally split up until July. Perry indicated in a court filing Tuesday that she and Brand had reached a settlement of all issues in the case. On Wednesday, Superior Court Judge Marc Marmaro agreed to grant the couple’s divorce, but it won’t become official until July 14. California law requires couples to wait six months after filing for divorce before it becomes official. Brand filed for divorce Dec. 31. He and Perry have blamed “irreconcilable differences” for their split. The former couple did not indicate in court filings when they separated. 4

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Fox’s medical drama “House” is ending its eight-year run this season. The show’s producers, including Emmy nominated star Hugh Laurie, said it was a “painful” decision but that the time had come to bring “House” to a close. The drama stars Laurie as Dr. Gregory House, a brilliant but troubled physician with a gift for unraveling medical mysteries. Omar Epps, Robert Sean Leonard and Charlyne Yi are part of the ensemble cast. In a statement Wednesday, Laurie and his fellow producers said they imagined Dr. House as an “enigmatic creature,” and that it was best for him to vanish while there was still mystery in the air. The season finale date for “House,” which airs 9 p.m. EST Monday, was not announced.

Virgin flights would need bigger runway

Sir Richard Branson

Tad Stoner tad.stoner@ieyenews.com

Continued from front page “We would have to extend the runway,” he said, although he told an audience at a Tuesday tourism-review meeting that he hoped to see work start on the expansion by the end of the year. “When the Shetty Hospital is built, medical tourism is going to be huge,” he said, citing Bangalore-based Dr Devi Shetty’s plans for a $2 billion, 2,000-bed hospital, visitors facility and after-care centre in East End. Groundbreaking on the initial phase of the project, a 140-bed hospital, is scheduled for August. “We are going to need more airlift

and the Civil Aviation Authority is in works to expand our airstrip and, hopefully, it will start in the middle of this year or in the last quarter,” he said. Aviation lecturer Edward Jerrard said not only Virgin Atlantic, but also British Airways and other major carriers required at least an additional 3,000 feet to the 7,000-foot runway. “Virgin Atlantic may be planning to come out at some point, but the runway has to be extended to nearly 10,000 feet,” he said. Virgin Atlantic flies into Jamaica’s Montego Bay on Tuesdays and Saturdays, and into Kingston three times each week, although the airline said yesterday it would drop the

Kingston route at the end of April. “Montego Bay has been the most popular, and with Kingston we were competing with ourselves,” a spokeswoman said. “But we are not planning in the near future any services into the Cayman Islands,” she said. However, Mr Bush and Sir Richard renewed a long--standing proposal to operate end-to-end air services, called “code-sharing”, in which Cayman Airways would schedule services to Montego Bay, meeting Virgin Atlantic passengers ticketed through to Owen Roberts. “They’d just have to change their schedules,” Mr Jerrard said. “It’s relatively simple.”

Spotlight on new Deputy Governor CAYMAN ISLANDS (GIS) — Featured on GIS Spotlight this week, Mr. Franz Manderson is the Cayman Islands new Deputy Governor and Head of the Civil Service. With a unique complement of skills and experience, Mr. Manderson is highly respected both inside and outside the civil service, and there is little doubt that his friendly but stern personality will add great value to his new post, which he took up on 1 February. Even so, while growing up in West Bay four decades ago, the perfect man for the job could not have imagined that he would become the second deputy governor. Commenting on his appointment, Mr. Manderson said: “I am extremely excited to take up this new role. I look forward to working with His Excellency the Governor Duncan Taylor and the Hon. Premier McKeeva Bush, together with chief officers, in order to improve the performance of the civil service while making the Cayman Islands Government a caring employer.” Mr. Manderson’s long and distinguished public service career began in 1981, when he was hired as

iWorld

a clerical officer. In 2003, after attaining a BA (Hons) degree in law, he took a break for a year to pursue his articles of clerkship at local law firm Walkers, and he was called to the Caymanian Bar in 2004. He then returned to the Immigration Department and later became Chief Immigration Officer which had been his long-term goal as a young officer. Even as he realized his early ambition, there was more in store for Mr. Manderson, and in 2009, he was appointed Chief Officer, Portfolio of Internal and External Affairs. Here he worked to improve strategic effectiveness and has overseen the introduction of key pieces of crime-reduction legislation such as the Alternative Sentencing Law, the Police Law and the Information and Communications Technology Authority Regulations. He also led a number of initiatives aimed at promoting security, including the National CCTV Programme. Despite his successful public service career, Mr. Manderson remains helpful, approachable and unassuming and has promised to

keep his “open door policy” which has been a hallmark of his career. It is this attitude that he brings to his new post where he plans to introduce significant changes to help improve the culture of the civil service. He will also encourage dialogue and open communication among employees at all levels; establish training programmes; provide quality induction for new civil servants; support both personal and professional growth, such as involvement in charitable organizations or activities that are relevant to work objectives; increase strong customer service ethics and promote good performance. Overall, his main focus is to put the civil service first with the key to his efforts “making the civil service a respected and independent organization that cares for the wellbeing of its employees.” Continuing Mr. Manderson said, “It is my goal to make this organization the employer of choice in the Cayman Islands – one which rewards its staff for successful performance and high excellence.” Ever humble, Mr. Manderson attributes his success in the public sector to his colleagues, friends

and mentors John Bostock, Jerry McGuire, Orrett Connor, Donovan Ebanks, George McCarthy and James Ryan. He also owes much to his mother, Mrs. Jenny Manderson, for being a positive influence in his life. He remains thankful for the sacrifices she made which allowed him to pursue an education. Mr. Manderson enjoys being a loving husband to Nuvia and devoted father to children Alyssa (20) and Franz Jr. (14). GIS Spotlight airs on Cayman27 at 8:30pm on Monday and 6:00 p.m. on Saturday. UN says Caribbean crime hurting economies PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad (AP) — Rising crime across the Caribbean threatens the region’s tourismbased economy and has exposed a weak and ineffective judicial system, according to a sweeping U.N. study released on Wednesday. Every Caribbean nation except Barbados and Suriname reported a spike in homicide rates and gangrelated killings over the past 12 years even as violent crime has fallen or stabilized in most other places across the globe, according to the 2012 Caribbean Human Development Report. The U.N. said it was the largest survey ever to focus on crime in the Caribbean. U.N. officials singled out Jamaica

6

and Trinidad for alarming levels of gang-related homicides that almost doubled from 2006 to 2009. Jamaica has the world’s thirdhighest murder rate, with about 60 murders per 100,000 inhabitants, while Trinidad reported a fivefold increase in its murder rate over the past decade and now has 36 killings per 100,000 people. “The report challenges governments of the English and Dutch Caribbean to action,” said Trinidad Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, adding that she supports the report’s recommendations. The Caribbean Community trade bloc found that gang-related crime costs member countries as much

as 4 percent of their gross domestic product. Jamaica loses $529 million a year, according to the report. “Violence limits people’s choices, threatens their physical integrity and disrupts their daily lives,” said Helen Clark, the U.N. Development Program administrator who unveiled the report in Trinidad. The report recommended that Caribbean nations reduce access to illegal firearms, create youth programs to prevent crime and provide jobs for the urban poor. Local governments also should ensure that law enforcement is accountable and more respectful of people’s rights, the report said. “The criminal justice system

still faces challenges,” according to the report, which cited delays, low conviction rates and prison overcrowding across the Caribbean. “Caribbean correctional systems are far from being able to balance protection of the public against the need for efficiency and fiscal prudence,” it said. The report’s recommendations are based partly on a survey of 11,555 people in seven countries: Antigua, Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica, Saint Lucia, Suriname and Trinidad. Nearly half of those surveyed said they worried about being crime victims, and nearly 80 percent said they feel criminals should receive harsher punishments. to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

Man executed for 1995 robbery spree killings PARCHMAN, Miss. (AP) — A Mississippi man was put to death Wednesday evening for killing two men in a December 1995 robbery spree after the courts declined to stop the execution based on arguments that the inmate was mentally ill at the time. Edwin Hart Turner, 38, died at 7:21 p.m. EST after receiving a chemical injection at the Mississippi State Penitentiary at Parchman, authorities said.

was sentenced to life in prison. Wearing a red prison jumpsuit as he lay strapped on a gurney, Turner said, “No” when asked if he had a last statement. When the lethal chemicals began flowing, he closed his eyes, took a deep breath and appeared to fall asleep. The sister and a cousin of victim Eddie Brooks watched the execution. The brother and son of his other victim, Everett Curry, also did.

Turner was convicted of capital murder in the deaths of Eddie Brooks and Everett Curry, who were slain at two gas stations a few miles apart that were targeted by Turner and another armed friend in a spree that netted them about $400. Brooks was shot to death first while working at one of the gas stations and Curry at the other while pumping gas when the pair went there next, toting rifles. Turner’s accomplice testified against him and

Police issue warrant for ex Maldives president MALE, Maldives (AP) — A Maldives court issued an arrest warrant Thursday for former President Mohamed Nasheed, one day after his supporters rampaged in the capital and his claim of being ousted by a coup left unclear the stability of the fledging Indian Ocean democracy. Police spokesman Abdul Mannan Yusuf refused to disclose the grounds for the criminal court’s warrant, or say when Nasheed — who is living at his Male home, surrounded by supporters — would be arrested.

Later, Police Commissioner Abdullah Riaz said it was not clear if the warrant was constitutional. He declined to provide details, but said the warrant’s legality was still being examined. Nasheed had announced he was voluntarily resigning Tuesday after months of protests against his rule and fading support from the police and the army. But the next day, as former Vice President Mohammed Waheed Hassan was forming a new government, Nasheed suddenly announced he had actually been

pushed from power at gunpoint. Thousands of his supporters swept into the streets. They clashed with security forces in Male, the capital, and attacked police stations in remote parts of this 1,200-island archipelago nation off southern India. The new government insists there was no coup. The dispute threatens the crucial tourism industry of this mostly Muslim nation of 300,000 people, which relies on dozens of highend resorts that cater to the rich and famous.

Judge tosses case seeking rights for orcas SAN DIEGO (AP) — An effort to free whales from SeaWorld by claiming they were enslaved made a splash in the news but flopped in court Wednesday. A federal judge in San Diego dismissed an unprecedented lawsuit seeking to grant constitutional protection against slavery to a group of orcas that perform at SeaWorld parks, saying the 13th amendment applies only to humans. U.S. District Judge Jeffrey Miller stopped the case from proceeding two days after he became the first judge in U.S. history to listen to arguments in court over the possibility of granting constitutional rights for members of an animal species. “As ‘slavery’ and ‘involuntary servitude’ are uniquely human to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

activities, as those terms have been historically and contemporaneously applied, there is simply no basis to construe the Thirteenth Amendment as applying to non-humans,” Miller wrote in his ruling. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals filed the lawsuit in October and named five whales as plaintiffs. PETA says the wild-captured orcas are enslaved by SeaWorld because they are held in concrete tanks against their will and forced to perform in shows at its parks in San Diego and Orlando, Florida. SeaWorld called the lawsuit baseless and a waste of the court’s time and money. Legal experts say it opened an interesting debate about the expansion of animal rights.

OPINION

The Editor Speaks What really is the picture in the Caribbean?

Colin Wilson

You only have to watch the syndicated US game show “Wheel of Fortune” to hear the words “Prize Puzzle” and the winner’s face and audience reaction when the prize is a trip to the Caribbean. Cruises to the Caribbean are the most popular in the world. The Caribbean as a whole is one of the most sought after places to take a vacation. The picture of clear blue skies, sweet breezes, warm sunshine, beautiful oceans, palm trees, coconuts, sipping Pina Polados at an outside bar in skimp clothing, soft yellow sand, etc. Wow. Idyllic. Paradise. Even heaven comes to mind. We are so lucky to be living in one of the best of all the Caribbean islands. Peace and tranquility…….. That is the perception of the Caribbean and this is what it was. However, the latest report published by the United Nations Development Programme has revealed crime has become the main challenge threatening economies and livelihoods in Caribbean countries. The Caribbean Human Development Report 2012: “Human Development and the Shift to Better Citizen Security” says “violence erodes the very foundation of the democratic processes in the region and imposes high social, economic and cultural costs.” Although only 8.5 percent of the world’s population live in the Caribbean, the region has 27 percent of the world’s homicides! Our next-door neighbours, Jamaica, has the highest murder rate of any Caribbean country and only two countries in the world, El Salvador and Honduras have more. Staggering isn’t it? The total cost of gangrelated crime on the Caribbean economy is between 2.8 percent and 4 percent of GDP. The Report was launched in Trinidad last week and contains this startling conclusion: “Violence and crime are therefore perceived by a majority of Latin American and Caribbean citizens as a top pressing challenge. The resulting alarm has often led to short-sighted, mano dura (iron fist) policies, which have proven ineffective and, at times, detrimental to the rule of law.” The report goes on to say, “The situation varies much among and within countries. Broadly speaking, there are high- and low-crime countries in the region, and differences exist even within each of the subregions (i.e., South America, Central America, and the

colin.wilson@ieyenews.com

Caribbean). However perceived insecurity and citizens’ concern are independent of actual crime rates, so that mano dura policies are not exclusive of highcrime countries. Can we honestly say that we here in the Cayman Islands are outside the statistics and recommendations in this report? We were not one of the countries surveyed by the UN so nothing contained in it is applicable to us? Right? You are mistaken if you believe this. Have you read the blogs on all the media websites (including iNews Cayman) relating to our very own police force? Read on: “Of primary concern with citizen security is the issue of public confidence in state capacity to protect citizens and ensure justice. If citizens lack confidence in the police, the judiciary and other public authorities, no amount of repression will restore security. The success of any law enforcement system depends on the willingness of the people to participate and contribute. For the state to enjoy the trust and commitment of the people, it must strive to eradicate exclusion, improve transparency and create opportunities that encourage a sense of belonging for all.” A key message of the report is that “Caribbean countries need to focus on a model of security based on the human development approach, whereby citizen security is paramount, rather than on the traditional state security model, whereby the protection of the state is the chief aim. Indeed, the contrast between prevention on the one hand and repression and coercion on the other is ill conceived. Social inclusion to help prevent crime and violence and efficient and effective law enforcement are by no means incompatible or mutually exclusive. In a truly democratic society, broad based social inclusion and swift criminal justice–or ‘prevention’ and ‘coercion’— serve to reinforce and complement each other.” “Violence limits people’s choices, threatens their physical integrity, and disrupts their daily lives,” said UNDP Administrator Helen Clark. How true. A full copy of the report can be found at: www. beta.undp.org/content/dam/undp/library/corporate/ HDR/Latin%20America%20and%20Caribbean%20 HDR/C_bean_HDR_Jan25_2012_3MB.pdf I urge everyone to read it.

450 years of Cuban architecture and interiors Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands (February 8, 2012): A connoisseur of West Indian antiques and architecture, Michael Connors returns to Grand Cayman for his third book presentation, discussion and signing since late 2009. Join him at Books & Books on Friday, February 17 at 7pm for a Cuban fiesta celebrating the release of his latest book, The Splendor of Cuba: 450 Years of Architecture and Interiors. Enjoy a visual tour of stunning and architecturally significant Cuban palacios, mansions and private homes. Purchase a copy of the book, have it signed by the author and enjoy a complimentary mojito along with a selection of bocaditos. This free event is part of the Books & Books International Visiting Author Series, generously sponsored by Camana Bay, the Cayman Islands Department of Tourism and Sunshine Suites Resort. About the Book At a time when more travellers are rediscovering Cuba, this lavishly illustrated volume offers a different view

of the island’s cultural achievements. If you feel you have seen exhibitions and books of formerly beautiful, gently deteriorating Cuban architecture, Michael Connors’ The Splendor of Cuba will be a quiet revelation. It presents not the Cuba of Castro’s era, with its derelict buildings and peeling paint, but the secret and extraordinarily well preserved opulence of colonial Spanish Creole aristocracy, with its Mudejar craftsmanship, classically inspired grand mansions and baroque palacios, coffee plantations (cafetales) and sugarcane plantations (ingenios). Exceptional preservation work has kept these villas in their magnificent original state, and the photographs, shot exclusively for this book, show examples in each area of the island— from the interiors and exteriors in Havana, Santiago de Cuba, Santa Clara, Cienfuegos, and Pinar del Río to closeup details of courtyards, balconies, galleries, balustrades, grilles, and louvered doors in Trinidad, Matanzas, and Holguín. Also included is Finca Vigía (“Lookout Farm”), the former residence of Ernest Hemingway.

For anyone with an interest in this storied island, The Splendor of Cuba will be a true discovery, and a volume to be treasured. The Splendor of Cuba and other books by Michael Connors are now available at Books & Books.

Buy Caymanian (by a Caymanian)

Joan Wilson

joan.wilson@ieyenews.com

“Buy Caymanian” is what they say But let me tell you what happened the other day When I was mowing my lawn you see The wheel broke off and nearly killed me. I jumped in my car and to the shop I did drive Going very carefully, I was glad to be alive For that lawnmower was going so fast When the wheel fell off I fell in the grass. There’s no speed limit on these mowers so we Just open the throttle and let it run free. Well, I got to the shop where the mower was bought Got a man to serve me and the wheel was sought.

“It’s all we have in stock You’ll find no better value than what’s here in this shop”. I took the wheel home as the man suggested But it didn’t fit so I angrily insisted... That what my mower needed was just a plastic wheel And not one weighing a ton and made of heavy steel. It was only then I heard the shopkeeper say “Perhaps, just perhaps we can get one from the USA.” Now I ask you folks to take a stand Is this really good enough for us in Cayman? Shopping local will save us a trip to start But please, oh please shopkeeper try and stock the part!

The wheel he produced was all he had. I took one look at it and said this is sad For the wheel I needed was made of plastic And this one is of steel and probably won’t fit it. “But if it fits your mower madam You won’t need a plastic wheel. You can have it on approval. I trust we have a deal? So take it home and try it madam.”

Mexico road project sets up fight over ruins

People camp in protest next to ruins on the outskirts of Amecameca, Mexico

MEXICO CITY (AP) — When neighbours in the hills east of Mexico City saw backhoes ripping up pre-Hispanic relics for a highway, they did something unexpected in a country where building projects often bulldoze through ruins: They launched protests to stop the digging and demanded an accounting of what is there. Dozens of residents set up a protest camp and filed complaints with state and federal officials, demanding the highway be rerouted, hoping that studies of the site can help solve an age-old riddle about their town. A story passed down for generations says Amecameca once stood on another site, and was abandoned after an eruption of the Popocatepetl volcano that looms over the town. Local residents suspect that the ruins, which are believed to date from 700 to 1,100 A.D. and are located on the outskirts of the presentday settlement, could help answer that question. “This represents a possibility for the people to recover that part of Amecameca’s history,” said activist Rebeca Lopez Reyes, of the local preservationist group Guardians of the Volcanos. “We could find out what happened there, if it was

evacuated or covered.” The idea is not far-fetched: Other settlements around Mexico City have been found half-covered in lava from volcanos that ring the valley, much as Italy’s Vesuvius volcano once buried Pompeii. The ruins detected so far in Amecameca are not particularly spectacular. Only about 120 square yards (metres) of the estimated 5-acre (2-hectare) site have been excavated, revealing stone and clay footings for houses that may have supported upper walls of wood or clay wattle. But the very ordinariness may mean the site is unusually significant. “What makes this important is that it is a residential

area, not a ceremonial or religious site,” said Felipe Echenique, a historian who serves as leader of the academic workers’ union for the National Institute of Anthropology and History, or INAH, which is in charge of reviewing the site. “In Mexico, we really have very little evidence of how the cities really were, or how people lived,” said Echenique, who was not involved in the dig but is familiar with preliminary findings. Towering pyramids in Mexico like Chichen Itza or temple complexes like Uxmal are well known, but the vast urban centers that supported those ceremonial sites have largely disappeared. The housing compounds were

apparently constructed by one of the still-unnamed cultures that populated the Valley of Mexico long before the Aztecs appeared in the area in 1325 and founded Tenochtitlan, the precursor to Mexico City. Lopez Reyes said researchers called in by the INAH to investigate the site of the proposed roadway have found ceramic pots, bones and a stone serpent’s head, suggesting that the god Quetzacoatl, “the Feathered Serpent,” may have been worshipped there centuries before the Aztecs paid him homage. The Institute has not released a formal report on what was found, saying researchers needed more time. The few excavations of residential areas carried out so far in Mexico have yielded fascinating details. In Teotihuacan, one of the biggest pre-Hispanic cities located northeast of Mexico City, some houses appear to have been illuminated by narrow doorways that opened onto central patios with shallow pools that acted as “water mirrors” to direct light inside the rooms. Techniques for building windows were apparently not yet known. Investigators say similar discoveries could emerge from Amecameca.

Cuban cuisine Georgina Wilcox georgina.wilcox@ieyenews.com

The Republic of Cuba is a West Caribbean island that has a rich cultural heritage from which has arisen culinary traditions as vibrant and varied as the variety of cultures that have contributed to the development of the island’s distinct and delicious cuisine. In addition to the ancient influence of the native peoples of Cuba, the Spaniards brought their own culinary styles, tinged by those of the Moors who held huge parts of Spain for centuries. The slaves that were brought from Africa made significant culinary and cultural contributions, with others being brought to the island with the French colonists fleeing uprisings in Haiti. And the Arabic, Chinese and Portuguese cultures have also influenced Cuban cuisine. As these various influences came together, a distinctly Cuban flavour and style evolved, which is reminiscent of country peasant styles of cooking by oral tradition and eye, rather than relying on specific measurements and the creation of dishes that tend towards the simple and hearty, and that can be left on their own to simmer. Fussy, heavy sauces are unusual and deep-frying is simply not a favoured cooking method. The island nation, naturally, uses a great deal of seafood in its cuisine, which encourages the use of simple cooking techniques and

spicing that is meant to enhance, not smother, natural flavours. However, the revolution and breakdown of U.S. relations in 1961 profoundly changed Cuban cuisine. Because Cuba was cut off from its source of imports it had to find other sources to keep the economy going. Their ties strengthened with the Soviet Union when Fidel Castro declared the revolution Marxist-Leninist. New food products entered the Cuban diet. Wheat, pasta, pizza and yogurt have become indispensable. Although pork is still the meat of choice, chicken and fish have taken precedence. Beef and lard have almost disappeared from the diet. Events of the 20th century had a substantial impact on Cuban food. Because U.S. policy forbids trade with Cuba, the island has been forced to change its diet. In Cuba, you will not find an American influence on Cuban food. However, in American Cuban immigrant communities such as Miami, American influences are present in Cuban food and recipes. The most common spices used in Cuban cuisine are garlic, cumin, oregano and bay or laurel leaves. Sofrito is also popular, and used in a wide range of dishes, from those of beans to those of meats to those that are made from a base of tomato sauce. A typical sofrito is made of green pepper, onion, garlic, oregano and black pepper fried in olive oil until the pepper, onion and

Moros y cristianos

garlic are soft and translucent and the flavors blend to perfection. The dense, nutritious, energy producing vegetables commonly used belie the African and native peoples’ influence on the cuisine of Cuba. Yuca, malanga, boniato, and plantano are among these, and are often simmered together with complementary vegetables and served simply, drizzled with olive oil and sprinkled with chopped fresh onion and a satisfying, strengthening and simple dish for a hard working people.

Meats are often prepared using island flavoured marinades of that use lime juice or the juice of a sour variety of the orange as a base. Then, the meats are roasted or simmered very slowly with spices, often for hours. Beans and rice are an essential part of most meals, with black beans being well known as a Cuban specialty. Cuban cuisine is also notable for its baked goods, which include a variety of turnovers. Some are filled with spiced meats and other types feature a particularly Cuban blend of cream cheese and guava paste. Flan is among Cuba’s most beloved dessert items. In Cuban cuisine, cooking and spicing methods are designed to bring out the best in each component of a dish and enhance the subtle flavours of healthy foods. The culinary traditions of Cuba are a delight to the tongue, naturally, but they also offer a fascinating glimpse into a culture that has brought together many varied elements to create a cohesive whole. to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

Unique Valentine’s Day Gift Georgina Wilcox

georgina.wilcox@ieyenews.com

For Valentine’s Day this year, why not be different and find a unique gift to give your loved one. Women love the concept of falling in love, so perhaps the traditional bouquet of flowers and a box of chocolates are no longer enough to make the woman in your life fall in-love with you again. Well, you can try these top five unique gift ideas that should make her heart beat fast and her head a little giddy this Valentine’s Day. 1. First date memorabilia That very first day you met will be the one she always will remember. Even though you cannot repeat the date again, you can at least relive it. Framing the menu from the restaurant you first ate at together is a brilliant way to show someone you care. To make the gift even more special, present it while eating dinner at the same place (even if it was fast food). A slight variation of this is to have a favourite photo of the two of you framed in a nice decorative picture frame. To go even further, you can have your favourite photo converted into a CrystalScribe(TM),

where you photo is engraved inside a crystal shape of your choice. CrystalScribe™ is a fusing unit. It is classy, elegant and your woman can’t but help to fall in love with it and especially you. 2. Star light, star bright If you have ever taken a look at the sky and wondered how many stars there really are, rest assured, there are enough to name one for the person of your dreams. Online Star Register (osr.org) will sell you a star. You get to give it a name and forever change the sky. This gift will only be special if you name the star after the one you love. Please try and refrain from naming it after yourself, no matter how tempting. Warning: This is meant to be for fun only and the name you choose will have no formal or official validity whatever. The International Astronomical Union (IAU) is the internationally recognised authority for naming celestial bodies and surface features on them. And names are not sold, but assigned according to internationally accepted rules. However, you will receive a nice

printed certificate from OSR that claims authenticity and you can hang it up in your bedroom. Even though I know it’s fake I still think it’s romantic. 3. Tell them with words While the story of your romance may not be what you would call incredible, others may think differently. This Valentine’s Day, try writing a concise version of your courtship and publish the story. Give your loved one a copy of the

published work and watch their face turn as red as that rose you left behind. 4. Give back adult time As time moves on in a relationship and courtship moves to marriage, it seems every waking moment is spent with the kids. Free time is given away, day after day. Homework, plays, soccer practice and dinner make breathing a cherished commodity. More than any monetary gift in the world, many would simply love the gift of time. Offering to watch the kids while your love spends a day, night or weekend away will not only present the perfect gift, but offer a refreshing change sure to last many moons. 5. Clean things up Many hours, from Valentine’s Day to Valentine’s Day are spent in the midst of cleaning. This year, take that chore away. A maid service for a month, is a great gift for the entire family. Imagine all of the free time you will gain when someone else has to do all the cleaning. Valentine’s Day gifts do not have to consist of roses, chocolates and expensive dinners. This year give a unique gift to your loved one she will be sure to love and a memory to last longer than any edible or perishable treat.

Tribe suing beer companies for alcohol problems LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — An American Indian tribe sued some of the world’s largest beer makers Thursday, claiming they knowingly contributed to devastating alcoholrelated problems on South Dakota’s Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. The Oglala Sioux Tribe of South Dakota said it is demanding $500 million in damages for the cost of health care, social services and child rehabilitation caused by chronic alcoholism on the reservation. The lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court of Nebraska also targets four off-site beer stores in Whiteclay, a Nebraska Panhandle town that, despite having only about a dozen residents, sold nearly 5 million cans of beer in 2010. Most of its customers come from the Pine Ridge reservation on the town’s border. Leaders of the tribe blame the Whiteclay businesses for chronic

iScience

alcohol abuse and bootlegging on the reservation, where all alcohol is banned. A spokeswoman for AnheuserBusch InBev Worldwide, one of five beer companies named in the suit, said she was not yet aware of the lawsuit when contacted by The Associated Press early Thursday afternoon. Representatives for the four beer stores in Whiteclay declined comment or were unavailable. The lawsuit alleges that the beer makers and stores sold to Pine Ridge’s Indian population, knowing they would smuggle the alcohol into the reservation to drink or resell. The beer makers supplied the stores with “volumes of beer far in excess of an amount that could be sold in compliance with the laws of the state of Nebraska” and the tribe, tribal officials allege in the lawsuit. The Connecticut-sized reservation

has struggled with alcoholism and poverty for generations, despite an alcohol ban in place since 1832. Pine Ridge legalized alcohol in 1970 but restored the ban two months later, and an attempt to allow it in 2004 died after a public outcry. The lawsuit says one in four children born on the reservation suffer from fetal alcohol syndrome or fetal alcohol spectrum disorder. The average life expectancy is estimated between 45 and 52 years, the shortest in North America except for Haiti, according to the lawsuit. The average American life expectancy is 77.5 years. “The illegal sale and trade in alcohol in Whiteclay is open, notorious and well documented by news reports, legislative hearings, movies, public protests and law enforcement activities,” the lawsuit states. “ All of the above have resulted

in the publication of the facts of the illegal trade in alcohol and its devastating effects on the Lakota people, especially its children, both born and unborn.” Nebraska lawmakers have struggled for years to curb the abuse in Whiteclay, and are considering a measure this year that would allow the state to limit the types of alcohol sold in troubled areas like it. The lawsuit names AnheuserBusch InBev Worldwide, SAB Miller, Molson Coors Brewing Company, MIllerCoors LLC and Pabst Brewing Company as defendants. Pine Ridge encompasses some of the nation’s poorest counties. U.S. census statistics place Shannon County, S.D., as the third-poorest, with a median household income of $27,300 and nearly half of the population meeting federal poverty standards.

Red Wings run home streak to 18 wins, beat Oilers DETROIT (AP) — Drew Miller and Henrik Zetterberg scored in the third period, and the Detroit Red Wings extended their home winning streak to 18 games with a 4-2 victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Wednesday night. The Red Wings overcame two more goals by Edmonton’s Sam Gagner to move within two wins of the NHL record of 20 straight home victories, set by the Boston Bruins durinptorg the 1929-30 season and matched by Philadelphia in 1976. The Bruins also won 19 in a row in Boston during the 1970-71 season. Johan Franzen and Cory Emmerton also scored for Detroit, but Gagner answered with a pair of goals to tie the game. He has eight goals and six assists in four games. After Gagner’s power play goal made it 2-2 with 11:37 remaining, Miller scored his 11th of the season amid a scramble in front. After Justin Abdelkader’s shot from the slot was stopped by Nikolai

Khabibulin, the Edmonton goalie appeared to think he had the puck frozen. But it was behind him, sitting tantalizingly in the crease, and Miller was able to poke it in the net. Zetterberg added an insurance goal with 5:16 to play, beating Khabibulin from a tough angle to the goalie’s right. The Red Wings, who have the league’s best overall record, played the first of six consecutive home games. They will host Anaheim on Friday night. Franzen opened the scoring on a power play, positioning himself in front of Khabibulin and redirecting Ian White’s shot from the point with 6:42 remaining in the first period. It was Franzen’s 21st goal of the season. Emmerton made it 2-0 early in the second, scoring on a backhander from in front after Abdelkader tried to jam the puck past Khabibulin. Detroit outshot the Oilers 20-9

Edmonton Oilers goalie Nikolai Khabibulin (35), of Russia, pushes the puck toward teammate Cam Barker (13)

through two periods but led only 2-1 thanks to Gagner’s breakaway goal. It appeared Edmonton’s Ben Eager might fight Jonathan Ericsson in front of the benches, but when Gagner took a lead pass and cruised alone into the Detroit zone, Eager spun away to join his teammate on the rush. Gagner has had at least a point in five straight games, including his four-goal, four-assist effort

against Chicago on Thursday. He scored again in the third period to tie the game and give him 13 goals this season. Joey MacDonald made 15 saves for Detroit, earning his first win of the season in only his third appearance. Red Wings general manager Ken Holland said regular starter Jimmy Howard (broken finger) is unlikely to be back this weekend.

Phelps using hyperbaric chamber to aid recovery NEW YORK (AP) — Michael Phelps is the latest athlete to use a hyperbaric chamber to aid his recovery from training. The 16-time Olympic medalist said Wednesday he had been sleeping “at 8,000 feet every night” for almost a year. The 26-year-old swimmer noticed he bounced back from workouts better when he trained at altitude, so he’s trying a device that simulates that. “We’ve been able to realize after going to Colorado Springs so many times that it is something that helps me recover,” Phelps said. “That’s something that is so important to me now being older. I don’t recover as fast as I used to.” He said the chamber looked like a fish tank: “Imagine, like, a bed with a box around it.” “It’s kind of strange, but it’s good,” Phelps said during an appearance for sponsor Head & Shoulders. “I don’t mind it. There’s a giant door at to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

the end of my bed. The worst thing is trying to watch TV in it. I’ve got to watch it through Plexiglas — it’s blurry.” Phelps is preparing for what he says will be his final Olympics this summer in London. He won a record eight gold medals in Beijing in 2008. Hypoxic or hyperbaric tents and chambers are used by many athletes to replicate high-altitude conditions and boost levels of oxygen-rich red blood cells. They have become popular with NFL players trying to speed their recovery from injuries. In 2006, the World Anti-Doping Agency’s ethics committee ruled that such chambers enhance performance and violate “the spirit of sport,” but the executive committee refrained from adding them to their list of prohibited substances and methods, instead asking for studies to look further into health implications.

Another England soap opera as Fabio Capello quits LONDON (AP) — The soap opera of English soccer reached yet another a noisy climax Wednesday when national team coach Fabio Capello quit angrily just eight hours after potential successor Harry Redknapp was cleared in a London court of tax evasion charges. Only four months before the European Championship, Capello’s employers stripped John Terry of the England captaincy over racism charges without consulting the manager — and as a result now finds itself seeking a new team leader. The career of Redknapp, a hugely popular Londoner who currently manages the Premier League team Tottenham, had been on hold until the end of his trial. But in a coincidence of timings, Redknapp was cleared by a jury on Wednesday and installed as favorite to assume one of the most highprofile jobs in international soccer following Capello’s sudden exit. The headline in The Times seemed to sum up the day: “Harry walks, Fabio runs.” Capello, a 65-year-old urbane Italian, had enjoyed some success in the England job but had never won the affections of a soccer-mad public hungry for the nation’s first major title since 1966. Now he has walked out on the $9 million-a-year job, dismayed at being publicly undermined by the English Football Association’s decision to fire Terry against his wishes last week despite the defender facing a criminal trial on racism charges. Such a public spat with his employers made the Capello’s position untenable. He quit during an hour long meeting with FA officials that focused on Capello’s TV outburst. “We have accepted Fabio’s resignation, agreeing this is the right decision,” FA Chairman David Bernstein said. “We would like to thank Fabio for his work with the England team and wish him every success in the future.” Bernstein does not have to rush into a replacing Capello. And it seems certain that the next manager will not be another foreigner after four years of a coach who spoke

halting English. At least, an English coach would already be accustomed to the drama surrounding the national team. Terry was restored as England captain 11 months ago despite Capello dramatically dropping the defender from the honour before the 2010 World Cup for allegedly having an affair with the ex-girlfriend of teammate Wayne Bridge, who subsequently quit the national team. Off-field antics also caused a distraction four years in Germany. The players’ wives and girlfriends — the so-called WAGS — dominated the headlines at the 2006 World Cup with their trips into the spa town of Baden-Baden, Germany, where the team was also based. Although they were largely banned from the 2010 World Cup by the strict Capello, England endured a worse tournament — getting routed 4-1 by Germany in the second round. After a lengthy honeymoon following a perfect World Cup qualifying campaign, the aura of a once-renowned disciplinarian started to fade at South Africa 2010. Capello started to feel the kind of pressure he was used to when coaching Real Madrid and AC Milan, with his decision-making coming under scrutiny and memories revived of the misery under predecessor Steve McClaren, whose team failed to qualify for Euro 2008. Capello clung onto his job after the World Cup, reviving the spirit in the England camp and starting to bring

young talent into the team ahead of Euro 2012 — but now comes another period of transition before England’s opener on June 11 against France. “The question everyone is asking, fans and players, where do we go from here?” England midfielder Jack Wilshere wrote on Twitter. “Euro’s is just around the corner and we have no manager?!?” An interim coach could take charge of the team for the Feb. 29 exhibition against the Netherlands before the role is filled full time, according to Gareth Southgate, the former England captain who is now the FA’s head of elite development. That could leave Redknapp clear to complete the season with Tottenham, which is third in the Premier League and in contention for the title, before spearheading England’s Euro preparations. “He’s got to be an outstanding candidate,” Southgate said. “Harry is at the top of the list.” Support is gathering among players for Redknapp. “Got to be english to replace (Capello),” England striker Wayne Rooney wrote on Twitter. “Harry Redknapp for me.” Capello, though, leaves, the England coach with a record that even eclipses Alf Ramsey, whose 1966 World Cup triumph is still the last — and only — time the country has won a major tournament. He won 28 matches, lost six and drew eight — a 67 percent success rate compared with Ramsey’s 61 percent. to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

On the road for Island relay On Super Bowl Sunday, representatives of seventy-four six-person squads gathered in the predawn darkness to begin an early morning struggle that would take participants from Gun Bay in the east to Smith’s Cove in the west. The occasion was the annual presentation of the Cross Island Relay, sponsored by FIDELITY and organized by the Hash House Harriers. Various strategies were included in team game plans. Some would gallop, while others would run, stride, dash, or simply move along the 24-mile course. The starting lineups included lobsters, panthers, antelopes, mules, and donkeys-all hoping to defeat the bulldogs. Pink Panthers, Purple Donuts, Red Sail Sports and Mixed Racers added colour to the scene. Chronologically, team members ranged from Hatchlings to Forty and Flat Out to Oldies to Grumpy Old Men. Geographically, included were Swiss, Yanks, Brits, Limeys and AONians. Weather conditions at start time boded well for the race westward, but shortly thereafter a light rain began to fall. There was little effect on the competition, but shortly after daybreak Mother Nature turned perverse and some runners from the Blow Holes to Frank Sound and others from Frank Sound to Bodden Town were treated to complimentary showers from torrential downpours. Jonathan Shillito of the KPMG New Crew led all runners through the first exchange zone, with the British Bulldogs a minute and a half back and the Hash another thirty seconds further back. Tom Gammage’s effort moved the Bulldogs to the fore at Frank Sound and Mike McDonald pushed the Pace Makers into the runnerup spot as KPMG dropped to third, while Beth Schreader’s speedy contribution brought the Sole Sisters up to the fourth spot. jets and set a torrid pace with the fastest run of the day to give the Pace Makers the lead at the halfway point. The Bulldogs dropped back to the runnerup position, while Megan Kounnas moved the Sole Sisters up to third. Strong running by Tristan von Kirchenheim took the Middle Distance Runners up to fourth. David Shibli Sr. overtook Sylvester Dube of the Pace Makers to give the Bulldogs the lead again at the end of leg 4, as Tracey Walker kept the Sole Sisters in third, while KPMG surged back to fourth thanks to Grant Cellier. Derek Larner maintained the Bulldog lead over the Pace Makers going into the final leg, while a temporary switch of allegiance saw David Shibli Sr. moving the Hash House Harriers into third over the Sole Sisters and Lauretta Bennett. Claire Critchley brought Time Wounds All Heels into fifth position. Chadwick Webster celebrated his birthday in fine fashion as he ran the second fastest time for the day while anchoring the British Bulldogs to victory in 2:31:54. Pace Makers were second at 2:34:11, followed by Hash House Harriers (2:48:05), Sole Sisters (2:51:12) and Middle Distance Runners (2:51:34).

Redknapp plays down England talk Paul Kennedy paul.kennedy@ieyenews.com

Harry Redknapp is the hot favourite to take over from Fabio Capello as manager of England. The Italian quit Wednesday – the same day Tottenham Hotspur boss Redknapp was found not guilty of tax evasion charges. But despite being the number one contender, Redknapp insisted he has “not even thought about” the England manager’s job left vacant by Fabio Capello’s resignation. He said he was “shocked” at Capello’s resignation but played down calls for him to take the England job, insisting that his “only interest” was Tottenham Hotspur. Manchester United defender Ferdinand, who played under Redknapp at West Ham, wrote on Twitter: “I think we need an English manager now, we don’t need anything else lost in translation... Harry Redknapp would be my choice by a distance.” Rooney wrote on Twitter last night: “Gutted Capello has quit. Good guy and top coach. Got to be English to replace him. Harry Redknapp for me.” Meanwhile, Prime Minister David Cameron has said he was “sorry” to see Capello resign. He said on a visit to Sweden: “I think he was a good coach and a good man. I don’t think he was right about the John Terry issue. You can’t be captain with that question mark that needs to be answered. “England now needs a new coach and a new captain and I hope we can get on with that and make the best of the opportunity this summer.” Mr Cameron sidestepped a question about whether Redknapp should take over, telling reporters: “The day when the Prime Minister picks the England coach will be a very bad day for football but I am

sure we will find someone really good and I am sure that we will play well when the time comes.” Spurs non-executive director Sir Keith Mills said it was “not a foregone conclusion” that Redknapp would be approached by the FA. He told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: “If he is, then clearly Harry has a big decision to make. I know he loves the club, he’s managing a top three team in the biggest league in the world.”

Sir Keith played down the prospects of Redknapp being allowed to do a jobshare, even if it were temporary. “Clearly that’s not an ideal scenario. Clearly, trying to do two jobs is going to be a stretch for anyone,” he said. England under-21 coach Stuart Pearce will take charge of England’s exhibition against the Netherlands on Feb. 29.
