Charles “Killa” Whittaker is preparing the biggest fight of his life – but this bout won’t be taking place in the boxing ring. The world number two says once he hangs up his gloves for good he wants to become a politician and Member of the Legislative Assembly. And he’s set his sights on taking charge of the Ministry of Sport – and using his vast boxing experience to promote Cayman to the world. “It’s just another part of the plan,” said the 37-year-old, who is due to fight for the World Title next year. “Maybe not Premier, but certainly Minister of Sport.” Outspoken Whittaker has often voiced his support for McKeeva Bush and says if it weren’t for the premier, he wouldn’t have gotten the shot at the title. But now West Bayer Whittaker has revealed his political ambitions and says he would pull no punches if he got into government. Continued on page 5

Mr. Miller said that Camana Bay’s contribution would pay for the upkeep of the club’s newest acquisition, a very large catboat that has taken a long time to restore, after being bought off the North Side Owner, and would also help the club’s building fund which is being used for the restoration of the clubhouse building in Whitehall Bay that was very badly damaged during Hurricane Ivan. Ken Hydes, Town Centre Manager at Camana Bay said: “The relationship between Camana Bay and the Catboat Club is very deeply seated in what we hold very near and dear. “I’ve got probably one of the greatest jobs in the company because as part of the town centre management, and one of the objectives is to promote Cayman Culture within the town centre and also support cultural organisations within the community.”

Rapha How criticism inspired Killa to greater things Medical Paul Kennedy Centre paul.kennedy@ieyenews.com
Charles Whittaker wanted to box before he could walk. From as far back as he can remember, it was always his lifelong dream to fight - And fight for Cayman. At school he was never a bully – but says he was not someone people could easily push around. Next year he’ll get his long awaited shot at the world title after he jumped to number two in the world following victory in Miami last month. At 37-years-old Whittaker says many of his critics thought he was too old to fulfill his dream and The Killa from West Bay admits it was always at the back of his mind to throw in the towel and call it a day. Thankfully that never happened. Instead of letting it get to him, the junior middleweight just took the mental blows firmly on the chin – and he used the criticism as the foundations to build his career higher and higher. After meetings with legendary promoter Don King and Premier McKeeva Bush, there is a possibility his title fight could take place on home soil – a dream come true for Whittaker. But it wasn’t always such a smooth ride. Whittaker cites the movie Cinderella Man as a comparison to his own life as he struggled to make it as a boxer in the early days. The 2005 film starring Russell Crowe tells the true story of James Braddock, a supposedly washed up fighter who became champion during the great depression of the 1930s. “It’s been a long journey and I’ve seen some amazing times in the 17

years I’ve been a professional. “I look at the movie Cinderella Man and I can see similarities from the time I was in America training and I would work for $50 a day and that was big to me. “I can remember getting ready in the dressing room for a fight in 1989 and I was so hungry. I’d not had anything to eat all day, I had no money and I said to my agent ‘I’ve had nothing to eat man’ go and get me something. And he had to go across the street to get me something to eat before I fought. “I wasn’t assisted on a monthly basis by the government. I had to jump through hoops just to get $5,000 for a whole year. “It absolutely crossed my mind at that time to give up. But you have to look at the realities. Give up and do what? “Also people like to look at the successes of individuals but I like to look at the struggles of individuals. “I like to look at how a man got to where he’s at. I like to go back to the beginning and talk about what they have been through and see how they got to where they are. “I look at the Jay-Z story. You know a guy told Jay-Z ‘Nobody’s gonna buy

I would tell people I was from the Cayman Islands and they would just think that was the place where all the banks were at. “I come from a country where there is no boxing history. I come from a country where the people here doubted me, 99% of them, people overseas doubted me because they hadn’t even heard of the Cayman Islands and people would say that I couldn’t even buy a world title. “All I could do when people said these things to me was laugh and I would answer them by going out and doing,” Read more from Charles Whittaker in iNews Cayman next week.

Drive to build hospital THE Nutall Memorial Hospital in Kingston has launched a fundraising drive to raise $250 million in order to transform the facility into Jamaica’s leading private hospital to coincide with its 90th anniversary in 2013, organisers say. The Anglican Diocese of Jamaica and the Cayman Islands, which owns the institution, and its management team say their redevelopment plan preceded last the furor about the use of the lands as part of the Urban Development Corporation’s (UDC) plans for the redevelopment of Kingston. Speaking at a fundraising gala for the hospital at the Jamaica Pegasus in Kingston on Monday evening, chairman of the Nutall’s board of governors Dr Vincent Lawrence made it clear that plans for the strategic direction for the sprawling Cross Roads-based institution was being conducted from 2008. “This was long before the past summer’s public discussion about the likely future of Nutall and its lands,” Dr Lawrence said. In August this year, then general manager of the UDC Joy Douglas, in a television interview, indicated that the UDC was interested in acquiring lands from the Nutall property as part of the overall vision for the city’s development. Following her statement the Anglican church firmly rebuffed the UDC, stating that the church was in no discussions about parting with its property, and viewed any unilateral attempt to do so as hostile.

Dutch state apologises for 1947 Indonesia massacre RAWAGEDE, Indonesia (AP) — After six decades of waiting, relatives of men killed in a notorious massacre during Indonesia’s bitter struggle for independence finally got what they wanted: an official apology from the Dutch state. Tjeerd de Zwaan, ambassador to Indonesia, apologised on his country’s behalf Friday before hundreds of villagers in Rawagede, scene of the Dec. 9, 1947 killings of up to 430 boys and young men by Dutch troops. The crowd, tense with emotion, erupted in cheers and applause. Tears rolled down the cheeks of
surviving widows, now in their late 80s and early 90s, some of whom had doubted they would ever hear those words. “It makes me feel my struggle for justice was not useless,” said Cawi binti Baisa, who was 20 when her husband of two years headed to the rice paddy in the morning never to return. Dutch troops clinging to their retreating colonial empire arrived in Rawagede just before dawn 64 years ago and opened fire, sending sleepy residents scattering from their homes in panic.
The soldiers were looking for resistance leader Lukas Kustario, known for ambushing Dutch bases. When villagers said they didn’t know where he was, nearly all the men were rounded up and taken to the fields.
Hospital staff abandon patients to fire, 65 die KOLKATA, India (AP) — Medical staff at an Indian hospital abandoned their patients and fled for safety early Friday as fire and smoke poured through the building, leaving 65 people dead, many from smoke inhalation, government officials said. As rescuers scrambled to evacuate survivors, police filed a case against the hospital in the eastern city of Kolkata for violating safety procedures and top government officials vowed to hold the hospital accountable for the tragedy. “It’s a very serious offense, and we will take the strongest action,” Mamata
Banerjee, chief minister of the state of West Bengal, said at the scene. Firefighters on long ladders smashed windows in the upper floors of the AMRI Hospital to pull trapped patients out before they suffocated, while sobbing relatives waited on the street below. Rescue workers took patients on stretchers and in wheelchairs to a nearby hospital. The fire killed 65 people, most of them patients, police said. Many of them died from suffocation. The blaze erupted in the building’s basement, and heavy smoke quickly
engulfed the hospital. The cause of the fire was not immediately known. S. Upadhay, a senior vice president of the AMRI hospital company, said there were 160 patients in the 190-bed hospital annex at the time of the blaze.

Jay-Z to raise money, perform at Carnegie Hall NEW YORK (AP) — Jay-Z didn’t graduate from high school, but he’s encouraging others to value their education. The rapper announced Thursday that he will perform two shows at New York’s Carnegie Hall in February to benefit the Shawn Carter Scholarship Foundation and the United Way of New York City. “Education is super important,” Jay-Z said. “I don’t have a high school diploma or a college diploma, but still for me to articulate, I had to have some form of schooling to articulate my thoughts.” The concerts will take place on Feb. 6 and Feb. 7. Tickets in the private sale will range from $500 to $2500.
CERTIFIED ANGUS BEEF SLIDERS
The press conference announced Jay-Z as the first solo hip-hop artist to play at the famed venue, though Wylcef Jean performed there in 2001 with Stevie Wonder, Eric Clapton and Whitney Houston. “I feel like they bent the rules so that it could make sense for me right now, but I’ll take it,” Jay-Z said with a laugh. Jay-Z says performing at Carnegie Hall is a big deal for hip-hop, and he’s happy to bring the genre to greater heights. “Any time that I get a chance to expand and broaden the reach of hiphop is a great thing for me on a personal level,” he said.

OPINIONS
The Editor Speaks
More worries Colin Wilson
I am in danger of getting my wrists slapped again by the premier for ‘jumping on the band wagon’ by seeming to support claims made by North Side MLA Ezzard Miller. Mr. Miller is suspicious of how the year on year projections increase in such a uniform manner against the global uncertainty that had been reinforced by Premier Bush’s own speech on austerity and falls in revenue from key sources. It does seem to be a contradiction when the government’s Strategic Policy Statement (SPS) speaks about controlling government spending whilst the projections seem to say otherwise. I am just as confused as Mr. Miller is and it makes me worried. My biggest worry, however, is over the controversy raging over the port berthing facility. It’s not just a question of who is going to build it and when, but where? Certainly Captain Bryan and the sea captains have some sound reasoning regarding their alternative proposal to build the facility in Red Bay (or South Sound as Consuelo Ebanks insists). However, the one major stumbling block that they have not addressed is the bussing of the cruise ship passenger to the shops. Howard Finlason of Royal Construction Ltd, secretary and member of the Cayman Contractors Association who is also one of the local partners of GLF Construction (the company whose port facility proposal was recommended but overturned by the premier) pointed this out at the public meeting last Tuesday (6) at the Seafarers hall. “One of the most successful cruise ports in the Caribbean is Bermuda,”
colin.wilson@ieyenews.com
iLocal
he said, “where the retail area is lined up directly in front of the port. By contrast, in St Thomas, although their port is only fifteen minutes away from the shops, the country has regretted the decision ever since.” Whatever happens one must take note of what the cruise lines want and so far there has been no direct contact with any of them regarding the Red Bay proposal. If the talking continues indefinitely without any positive decision and no action the whole matter will be only a mute point. And talking of no action…….. when is a decision going to be made regarding the New Year’s Eve extension past midnight? As I pointed out last month New Years Eve falls on a Saturday this year, and it has created a major concern from many bar and restaurant owners. The law states that you must stop music and dance and alcohol at 11:50 p.m. The Cayman Islands Tourism Association (CITA) along with individual restaurants have pleaded with the Liquor Licensing Board to make a decision quickly (hopefully to extend it by one to two hours into Sunday) but that has fallen on deaf ears. Didn’t Nero play his fiddle whilst Rome burned? Note: Fiddles (violins or any viol kind) did not develop until the 11th century and Nero was around in 65 A.D., but he was indeed a musician. So it would have had to be a lyre or a cithara he was playing. But at least he was doing something even though it was nothing to help the situation. Perhaps the theory here in the Cayman Islands is, if we do nothing the problem will go away. My worry is that this seems to be the decision making of too many government bodies and committees today.

Christmas Cracker - personal safety week - school holiday safety Personal safety is this week’s theme in the RCIPS holiday safety initiative Operation Christmas Cracker. As the school holidays are fast approaching, officers from the RCIPS Family Support Unit are reminding parents and carers that they need to make sure that they know where their children are, and that they are appropriately supervised. “In recent times we have had reports of parents leaving their children unsupervised at libraries and in other places for long periods of time during the school holidays,” said Inspector Christsandra Mitchell. “As part of the holiday safety initiative – Operation Christmas Cracker – we

Severe winds hammer Scotland LONDON (AP) — Severe winds slammed Scotland on Thursday (8), snarling transport and leaving thousands without power as gusts in some areas surpassed 100 miles per hour (160 kph). Britain’s Met Office — which issued a “red alert” for parts of Scotland — said a wind speed of 151 mph was recorded on a summit in Aberdeenshire. On lower ground, 105 mph winds hit Tulloch Bridge in Inverness, it said. The Association of Chief Police Officers in Scotland said a wide area of the country would be affected and that “people could be putting themselves at considerable risk” by travelling in such weather conditions. The gale-force winds led authorities to close many schools and most major bridges. Glasgow Airport said 37 flights were canceled, while Edinburgh Airport said 21 were canceled and three diverted. The wind made operations “extremely challenging,” the Edinburgh Airport said on its web site. Meanwhile, train schedules also were disrupted. Scottish Hydro said “thousands” of customers were without power, mostly in the west of Scotland. It said it expects the situation to “develop throughout the day” as the storm moves east. The severe weather also hit parts of northern England, with Cumbria experiencing heavy rain and widespread locallised flooding. Buckingham Palace said the weather

had forced Sophie, the Countess of Wessex — wife of Prince Edward — to postpone two planned visits in northern England, while the Duke of Gloucester was forced to cancel engagements in Glasgow. A Royal Air Force helicopter rescued two people from a car trapped in rising waters in Aysgarth, in Yorkshire, northern England. The clear-up of devastation caused by hurricane-strength winds and violent storms in Scotland has begun in earnest, with the Scottish government warning that some people may be without electricity until the weekend. Engineers were urgently trying on Friday to reconnect more than 70,000 homes which were without power, some
travel services were still disrupted and councils were clearing debris from roads after the fiercest storms in a decade hit the country. Most schools, businesses and council offices that had been forced to close early on Thursday afternoon reopened. Winds – which reached 165mph on Thursday – eased, with the worst weather confined to north-east Scotland and the Shetlands. Glasgow and Edinburgh airports were open but warned of severe delays and cancellations, while Scotrail services were still delayed across Scotland with cancellations expected on routes from Inverness to Aberdeen, Gourock to Glasgow Central, and Oban and Fort William to Glasgow Queen Street. Roads were beginning to be cleared, with police saying conditions had improved across the Western Isles and the Highlands. However, many roads were still blocked by fallen trees and surface water. The strong winds forced the closure of every major bridge in Scotland including the Forth road bridge between Edinburgh and Fife, the Erskine bridge connecting Renfrewshire and Dunbartonshire, the Skye bridge and the Tay road bridge. Orkney suffered widespread flooding and damage; all schools in Orkney, Caithness and on the north coast of Sutherland remained shut. Fourteen schools closed in Aberdeenshire and some schools in Angus, Argyll and Bute, Shetland, Stirling and the Western Isles were also without power.

Sunrise Centre’s 25th anniversary We buy and sell gold, jewellery, electronics, vehicles and much more 943-7296 144 N. The centre provides programmes to support personal development, and we at the ministry are proud to be a part of each individual’s success.” The evening was brought to a close as Ms Roberta Gordon (former director of the Centre for 21 years) was recognized for the many achievements and milestones the centre reached under her leadership. Really bad Christmas presents Superior Auto, a comprehensive garage- (Machine Shop/ Aluminum, Steel and Gas Welding, Auto Repairs and Bodywork and Paint Shop).
Georgina Wilcox georgina.wilcox@ieyenews.com
Have you ever sat with your family or friends at Christmas, only to watch the false smiles appear on their faces as you hand over a pair of socks and a box of chocolates for the third year running. If this sounds like you then you may just benefit reading my advice before it is too late. Bad presents tend to fall into three categories, Thoughtless, Useless and Boring. If you have been unfortunate enough to receive any gift from that list then you should have an idea of an alternative which you would have been much happier with Turn a thoughtless gift into a thoughtful gift: One of the obvious signs of a thoughtless gift is the “rush” factor. Regardless of the cost, a gift that looks like it has been bought in a hurry screams a lake of thought and preparation. Even the most expensive bottle of champagne would not impress someone who is teetotal. Taking your time and being organised is the key to making sure your gifts this year are your most thoughtful yet. The Internet is perfect for helping you discover some great unique presents. Many websites specialise in producing personalised gifts and do not charge extra for the personalisation. Personalising a present is a clear indication that you have thought about the recipient. Nowadays the usual thoughtless gifts can become a present to treasure for years to come. If they are fond of a particular tipple you can now personalise a bottle of wine, all you do is type in the message you would like and it is delivered to your door. Even a calendar can become the highlight of Christmas day when the lucky recipient sees their name spelt out in a different image throughout the 12 months. How to go from Useless to Useful: Having received my fair share of useless gifts this area is a particular issue of mine. either side off it with a detachable straw, especially if you are a woman? We can all appreciate a humorous gift, but they don’t always have to be useless. Photo gifts have taken off in a big way and enable you to send an image via email and have it printed on to a range of accessories and household items. Whether it is a cushion for your sofa or a deck chair for the garden, these great gifts take your favourite photograph and turn it into a unique gift that looks good as well as being useful. There are also some wonderful Christmas themed presents available that should be essential additions to your preparations for the big day. Personalised Christmas Stockings and Santa Sacks are perfect for making Christmas morning even more special and exciting and they are ideal for keeping all your gifts safe, away from prying eyes. No more socks, make this Christmas one to remember: There should be no excuse this year for you to give, or receive for that matter, a boring gift. With the option of both Cayman’s excellent shops and online shopping there has never been more choice for all your Christmas shopping needs. Retailers are gearing up for the festive season earlier each year with more interesting and exciting presents than ever before. To buy a boring gift this year would be inexcusable.
Don’t just leave all those water sport activities and adventures available here to the tourists. Buy one as a gift for a friend or loved one. Look at all these activities available here: Atlantis submarine, boat and jet ski rental, party boat cruise, kayaks, deep sea diving, reef diving, shore diving, wreck diving including the USS Kittiwake, snorkeling, dinner cruises, horseback riding, parasailing, Black pearl Park with its giant wave machine, fishing excursions, the Jolly Roger pirate cruise, the Turtle Farm and Boatswain’s Bay, and these are only what comes to my mind. Any of them are better than the i novelty silk tie? Why not surprise a loved one by naming their own star? A million miles away from a boring gift, you can now register a name of your choice on the intergalactic star database and even find the location of it with a poster of the star’s coordinates. Or take one giant leap in your Christmas shopping habits and purchase a genuine acre of the moon? A loophole in International Law resulted in American Dennis Law claiming ownership of the moon and its surrounding satellites which he then began to sell off acre by acre. Your friend may never actually manage to step foot on their acre but they will still have an official certificate from the Lunar Embassy to prove they are the rightful owners.

Weststar announces launch of fibre project WestStar officials have announced the launch of the company’s fibreoptic project. Because of limited bandwidth in its wireless spectrum, WestStar officials have been working toward installing a wired cable system which allows the company to expand its channel lineup. After completing two feasibility studies, WestStar is moving ahead with fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) technology. The fibre-optic infrastructure will replace the current MMDS system and opens the door to more products and services for WestStar subscribers including interactive services. Rod Hansen, WestStar CEO says, “This is a large-scale infrastructure project which has been in the works for quite some time; we now have financing in place and have retained an engineering
iCulture
firm so we are ready to move.” The announcement is being made after the ICTA granted an extension of WestStar’s fibre license and marks the start of the RFP process to build a FTTH network in Grand Cayman. Several contractors, including one local firm, have been invited to submit bids to construct the system. Those proposals are due at the end of December and once the winning proposal is awarded the company will commence construction. Byers Engineering Company, with high profile clients such as Verizon wireless has been retained to oversee the project from planning to execution. The Byers team was in Cayman this week meeting with potential contractors for the project. “We’re very excited; I think it’s going to bring a lot
of economic impact to the community” says Byers VP of Engineering, Charles Mayberry. Byers will design and provide construction management services for the FTTH project. WestStar VP Jeremy Elmas says it was important to partner with an experienced engineering team saying, “The Cayman Islands is a sophisticated jurisdiction and requires an infrastructure that matches that sophistication. Christmas Morning of Yesterday Joan Wilson joan.wilson@ieyenews.com
It was no ordinary Christmas morning for me As I opened the bedroom door to have a peep Just so excited and eager for the sun to rise So I could quickly claim my Santa surprise So quietly I closed the bedroom door Returning to my bedroom as I said before Just a minute or two to go I said I wouldn’t even go near the bed As the excitement started to build in my mind Just wondering what toy I would get, what I would find It seemed like hours and hours had past When suddenly I heard the sound of music at last It was sweet music coming from a small band As they walked into our garden of all white sand Playing their maracas, guitars, drum and saxophone We all sat on the porch rail and joined in the tune Now this was Christmas morning of yesterday And I wouldn’t have it any other way With James Thomas, Willard Connor, Delhart and Elon Parrs No need for other musicians to come from afar When they would sing Glory, Glory, Hallelujah It made the hairs on my head start to crawl And the hip, hip, hurrahs came from under their lungs No complaints from anyone as they joined in the song They sang England got the money and Jamaica got the rum That was their favourite marching song And with another hip, hip, hip, hurrah They marched on their Merry Christmas way

As I looked in the living room to find my toy I was so excited and so full of joy Not knowing exactly what I would find I really can’t explain what was on my mind And guess what I found that charmed me so much A big brown teddy bear so soft to touch I hugged it and kissed it and cuddled it too It’s was what I’d longed for all the year through I never had a teddy bear before just a dolly I think She had a lovely smile on her face and eyes that winked I cuddled that doll both night and day And loved her in a very special way Back to the living room and to the gifts on the floor Was this big cuddly teddy bear really mine for sure ‘It’s yours all yours’ my mother said with glee ‘Take it as a gift from Santa and me’ Our neighbor played Christmas Carols all year round From her Victrola came a real familiar sound And whilst Hark the Herald Angels were singing Above and beyond the Church Bells were ringing They were calling us to celebrate Christmas morn This was the day the Christ Child was born We sang ‘Away in a Manger no Crib for a Bed The little Lord Jesus lay down His Sweet Head’ So off to Church you should have seen us walking As we shared all our thoughts laughing and talking New dress and shoes was the usual trend We were hoping the day would never end But it did - Yesterday …. I appreciate how the Cayman Islands Cancer Society’s staff care for my wife who is a cancer survivor. I have a lot of respect for those people because they treat everyone with respect. They truly care for cancer patients. I pray that the Lord will give them His blessings and the strength to carry on the good work that they are doing. Fergie says United can cope Paul Kennedy paul.kennedy@ieyenews.com
Sir Alex Ferguson is convinced his Manchester United squad is strong enough to cope with the loss of centre-back Nemanja Vidic for the rest of the season. Club captain Vidic damaged knee ligaments during the midweek 2-1 Champions League defeat in Basel that ensured three-times European champions United exited the competition at the group stage. Ferguson, speaking ahead of United’s Premier League meeting with Wolverhampton Wanderers, confirmed Serbia international Vidic would see a specialist shortly but had no hope of playing any further part in the campaign. But while the United manager conceded the loss of Vidic was a major blow, he insisted the reigning English champions, currently five points behind leaders Manchester City, had the resources to cope with the defender’s absence. “We thought the Vidic injury was a bad one and when you saw the replays you knew it was a bad one,” Ferguson said on Friday. “So he’s out for the season. He sees the specialist on Monday, also to map out the progress once he has the operation. “It won’t be immediate because the swelling has to go down, so that’s a bit of a blow.” Ferguson added: “Of course it’s a loss. We missed him when he was out for about five weeks at the start of

the season. “He’s such a dominant character, in particular his defending in the penalty box which is always a strong feature of his game. “It does mean we’ll have to choose between Jonny Evans and Phil Jones and Chris Smalling. We have the options there. And of course (Rio) Ferdinand. “Ferdinand had his best game of the season on Wednesday, I thought he was tremendous and that kind of experience from Rio with one of the younger ones I think will be a good combination,” Ferguson insisted. On Monday Chelsea host Man City with Andre Villa Boas desperate for a Chelsea victory against a top four side. City, still to lose a league match this season, are targeting the Premier League title according to midfielder Nigel De Jong. After finishing third
in the Champions League and not progressing to the next stage De Jong said: ““We won’t be affected by this setback. Winning the league will make up for this. We didn’t go through in the Champions League, but we can’t let that distract us from our main target — and that’s winning the Premier League. “We are still in with a chance of four cups. We are not despairing about the season because it’s still early. It’s the first year City were in the Champions League and expectations were high.” “But in the group expectations weren’t so high because our main target was still the Premier League title.” For exclusive videos and news from the Premier League log on to www.ieyenews.com Saturday, 10 December 2011 Barclays Premier League Arsenal v Everton, 15:00 Bolton v Aston Villa, 15:00 Liverpool v QPR, 15:00 Man Utd v Wolverhampton, 15:00 Norwich v Newcastle, 15:00 Swansea v Fulham, 15:00 West Brom v Wigan, 15:00 Sunday, 11 December 2011 Barclays Premier League Sunderland v Blackburn, 13:30 Stoke v Tottenham, 16:00 Monday, 12 December 2011 Barclays Premier League

Marlins’ Nunez apologises for using fake name, age SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (AP) — Miami Marlins reliever Leo Nunez has apologised for using a fake name and age, saying he falsified his identify when he was young so he could play professional baseball. Nunez says in an interview with The Associated Press that “it was a mistake” and has apologised to his fans, the Marlins and U.S. government. His real name is Juan Carlos Oviedo and he’s 29, a year older than listed in the Marlins’ media guide. He spoke to the AP in the Dominican Republic on Friday, a day after he was arrested on a charge of using a false identity and then released. Officials say he would not be prosecuted because he was cooperating with a larger investigation of fake documents. In September, the Marlins placed him on baseball’s restricted list after Dominican authorities said he was implicated in the case.

Fedora introduced as football coach at UNC CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — Larry Fedora says he’s excited to help North Carolina’s football programme move forward. Fedora was introduced as the Tar Heels’ coach Friday, a few hours after the terms of his seven-year contract were approved during a meeting of the school’s board of trustees. With men’s basketball coach Roy Williams among the hundreds attending his introductory news conference, Fedora proclaimed it “the first day of a new era of UNC football.” “You’d better buckle your seat belts and you better hold on,” Fedora said, “because it’s going to be a wild ride.” The former Southern Mississippi coach received a deal worth more than $1.7 million annually. It includes several bonuses, including for winning a division or conference championship, reaching a BCS game and high graduation rates. Fedora, who said he planned to meet with his new team after the news conference, will receive annual

retention bonuses ranging from $100,000 to $350,000 beginning in 2015, as well as a one-time payment of $400,000 in the first year and an annual expense allowance of $30,000. “I think we got the absolute perfect fit for us at this time,” athletic director Bubba Cunningham told trustees at the meeting. The former offensive coordinator at Florida and Oklahoma State went 33-19 in four seasons at Southern Miss. Fedora led the 22nd-ranked Golden Eagles to the Conference USA championship and extended two impressive streaks — 10 straight bowl appearances and 18 consecutive winning seasons — in his final year in Hattiesburg, Miss. The 49-year-old native of College Station, Texas, is perhaps best known for his aggressive coaching style and wide-open, no-huddle offenses. He became a hot commodity this offseason after he led Southern Miss to an 11-2 record and a dominating upset of then-No. 7 Houston in the C-USA championship game.

NEW YORK (AP) — David Stern had three deals to consider, all promising significant changes to the NBA. A new collective bargaining agreement, saving owners more than $1 billion in player salary costs? Definitely. An expanded revenue sharing plan that would perhaps quadruple the money shared by teams? Of course. A trade that would send Chris Paul from the league-owned, small-market Hornets to the Los Angeles Lakers? Absolutely not. Stern announced the ratification of the deal that ends the lockout, but shortly afterward the league had to deny reports that he was pressured by owners into rejecting a previously agreed upon trade that would have put Paul in the same backcourt as Kobe Bryant. “It’s not true that the owners killed the deal, the deal was never discussed at the Board of Governors meeting and the league office declined to make the trade for basketball reasons,” league spokesman Mike Bass said. So Paul stays in New Orleans — for now — but that does little to calm fans in small markets such as New Orleans and Orlando who worry about losing their superstars. In time, Stern said, the “tortured journey” of this 161-day lockout will have been worth it. “We think it’s a very good deal, and it’s going to withstand the test of time,” he said. Thus ends the lockout, with training camps and free agency to open Friday. But not before one more chaotic day in this wacky offseason that guarantees the status quo remains for now. Besides an expanded revenue sharing program, Stern said teams and fans will see an improved league in coming years. “It’s a new beginning in a way,” he said. “It’s going to take a couple of years to work its way out, but we’re very excited about its prospects.”

Boxers bring back medals
The winners show off their medals with Charles Whittaker, President Thomas Ebanks and coach Nayon Donie Anglin
Paul Kennedy paul.kennedy@ieyenews.com
Boxers from the D Dalmain Gym proudly show off their impressive medal haul after their successful trip to Barbados.
Gino “Crusher” Brown who won silver
World number 2 Charles “Killa” Whittaker was on hand to congratulate the winning team after every single one of them returned to Cayman with either gold or silver. Tafari Ebanks, Thomas McField
and Dariel Ebanks all picked up gold at the Ronald Wilson Memorial Tournament, previously known as the Caribbean Championships. Kendall Ebanks and Gino “Crusher” Brown both won silvers. Whittaker was quick to heap praise on the work carried out by coaches Nayon Donie Anglin and Norman Wilson. “These guys have been the backbone of boxing in Cayman,” he said. “They must be very proud of what the team has achieved in Barbados. “My advice to the older members of the team would be to look at turning professional after the Olympics.” Meanwhile Peter “Lightning” Lewison hopes to break into the top 100 in the world with his next bout. He is due to fight in March against a Mexican opponent and victory would see him jump up the ranks. He said: “My short-term goal was to get into the top 100 one year after turning professional and a victory in March could see that happen.” To watch highlights of Lightning’s last fight log on to www.ieyenews.com
