Tad Stoner Two new locations - miles away from where Kerran Baker’s car was found - are being searched by police looking for the missing 25 year old. Detectives leading the hunt to find the nursing assistant have revealed they are scouring areas in both Frank and South Sounds. They also say they are combing through hours of CCTV footage in a desperate bid to find clues to locate Kerran. Yesterday, detectives revealed her distraught parents – who came to Cayman from Portmore in Jamaica - are remaining on Island hoping to quickly hear what has happened to their daughter. Detective Superintendent Marlon Bodden also said they are working closely with Canadian Blackberry Company Research In Motion (RIM) as Kerran was a very active user. Kerran has not been seen since July 30th. Her white Honda Civic was found abandoned in Pedro’s Castle.

Bottled water helps kids hit the water!

TIPS AND ADVICE TYRES ARE THE CRITICAL CONNECTION BETWEEN YOUR CAR AND THE ROAD IN ALL SORTS OF DRIVING CONDITIONS. To maximize tyre life and safety, CHECK TYRE CONDITION AND INFLATION PRESSURE once a month. Also, have the tyres rotated and balanced EVERY 6,000 MILES. Tyre replacement may be necessary if the tread depth is below minimum legal requirement, and/or the sidewalls are severely cracked or punctured. Questions to ask during servicing your tyres include the following: 1. What types of tyres should go on my vehicle based on my driving? 2. Do they have to be replaced in pairs? 3. What can happen if I install the wrong size tyres for my car? 4. My car shakes at certain speeds… what causes this?

Young sailors in Cayman are ready to take to the high-seas, thanks to Flower’s Bottled Water. Cayman’s youth sailors recently took delivery of a newly refurbished fleet of Optimist sailing dinghies thanks to generous support from Flower’s Bottled Water. The Optimist Sailing dinghy is arguably the most successful sailing boat of all time. Designed to be sailed

by children up to 15 years old, there are more than 160,000 active optimist sailors in over 100 countries worldwide. 85% of medal winners at the Beijing Olympics were former Optimist sailors and most Americas Cup Sailors started off in Optis. Rick Caley, the Cayman Islands Sailing Club (CISC) manager said: “This group of sailors has all now moved on to college and beyond,

11 August 2011 | to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

leaving a bit of a vacuum in the CISC sailing programme. There were no new young sailors coming through to fill their shoes.” New Head Coach Raph Harvey has put in great efforts to rejuvenate the grass roots of the sailing programme and has targeted the Optimist class as the way to go. Coach Raph summed up his new philosophy saying, “Kids want to get sailing fast but if they haven’t learned how to sail properly and handle their boat well, they just won’t get to the very top. The Optimist requires a high level of skill and commitment to get the best out of the boat and our present squad of sailors is starting to show signs that they have what it takes”. This new initiative has led to the CISC being invited to host the Western Caribbean Optimist Dinghy Championship in March 2012. This will be a large event and the CISC expects up to 50 sailors from North America, Central America and the Caribbean to take part. It will also be a great opportunity for Cayman’s young sailors to compete against top sailors in their own back yard.

iStrange Mysterious orange goo washes up in Alaska village ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — Authorities say a mysterious orange-colored substance has washed up on the shores of a remote village in northwest Alaska. Tests have been conducted on the substance on the surface of the water in Kivalina City. Administrator Janet Mitchell told The Associated Press that the substance has also shown up in some residents’ rain buckets. Coast Guard Petty Officer David Mosely tells KTUU that it’s not a petroleum substance and it’s not man-made. Mitchell says the village is requesting that an algae expert from the University of Alaska Fairbanks investigate. Pictures taken by resident Mida Swan show an orange sheen across the harbor and on beaches in the village about 625 miles northwest of Anchorage. Swan says she didn’t smell anything odd when she dipped her hand into the substance.

9-year-old gets wallet back after posting letter POQUOSON, Va. (AP) — A 9-year-old boy who left his wallet containing hundreds of dollars at a Virginia convenience store got it back after he posted a handwritten letter. The Daily Press reports a woman returned the wallet and its contents to a 7-Eleven store in Poquoson. The boy, identified only as Charlie, says he left the wallet on the counter while he was getting a drink. The boy’s letter which contained his photo was posted on the store’s front door. It said the wallet contained more than $300 the boy had saved, along with gift cards he got for his birthday. The letter ended with, “I hope whoever has it needed it more than me.” Store manager Marvin Ward declined to give further details on the woman who returned the wallet.

No permission for Emerald Sound signs Tad Stoner Opponents of the Emerald Sound development say they are gathering strength for a new set of actions including approaches both to Cabinet and the Central Planning Authority’s Appeals Tribunal. Meantime, the Department of Planning says it has initiated action to remove the two dozen signs posted along South Sound Road, denouncing the Emerald Sound project and its accompanying canals and ocean channel. “The signs on the side of the road do not have planning permission,” Director of Planning Haroon Pandohie told iNews, “and we cannot have them there. “We will contact the land owners and tell them they either have to remove the signs or we will take the next step.” he said. If owners decline to take down the signs, most of them approximately four square feet, their names and addresses will be forwarded to the Central Planning Authority (CPA), which, Mr Pandohie said, will issue orders to remove them. Failure to comply could result in a series of summonses and fines. “We have already started the process,” he said, ”and have already received plenty of calls [about the signs]. We will contact the parties and explain the situation.” The process could take a week or more, but officials had not yet approached the authority” “not yet,” Mr Pandohie said. Meanwhile, Katrina Jurn, a member of the ProtectSouthSound group, was unaware of Department of Planning approaches to any of the approximately 200 members of the body, but said the creation of the opposition billboards had been “a community effort”. “The South Sound community collectively decided there were appropriate measures to take to show its position,” she said, but declined to comment further on the subject. Another member of the group, however, asking anonymity, said

previous experience indicated planning officials would have balked at giving a go-ahead. “We would not have got permission if we had applied,” he said, “and would have had to wait till 17 August just to get a hearing.” On 3 August, the CPA heard arguments about the 90-acre, 81home canal-side development near Red Bay Dock on South Sound Road, proposed by RC Estates’ Rene Hislop and architect Burns Conolly. Opponents fear the area will be subject to flooding, drainage issues and pollution. The proposed 80-foot inland shift of South Sound Road, while creating bicycle and jogging paths, will also increase both local traffic and the value of the 22 Hislopowned seaside lots. On 4 August, the CPA approved the development, renewing opposition sentiment.

11 August 2011 | to blog visit www.ieyenews.com

“This opposition is not at all dying,” Ms Jurn said. “What seems to have happened is that people had reckoned that Emerald Sound would not be passed, but suddenly, when it was, a lot of people were shocked and are now on board [with us]. We are definitely moving ahead, and it may be a long process.” ProtectSouthSound had broken into five subcommittees, dominated by legal, fund-raising and petition groups. The latter, she said, hoped to gain 500 signatures that could be presented within 14 days of the CPA decision to the Appeals Tribunal. Like personal approaches to Cabinet, Ms Jurn said “we have a lot of confidence that they will make a decision in the best interests of the country, not just in the interests of the construction industry.” tad.stoner@ieyenews.com

iAdopt Reward offered after Ebony vanishes Staff at The Humane Society have put up a reward to find one of their much loved residents. Ebony was enjoying a “sleepover” in Newlands last week when she managed to break free of her lead and jump out of a car. Despite the best efforts of volunteers who have been looking for her over the past week she has still not been seen. Her kennel mate, Gigi, is missing her so much she even joined in the search but to no avail. Someone did spot her near where she disappeared but there has been no sign of her since. Now staff have clubbed together and managed to raise $300 to offer as a reward. A spokesman for The Humane Society said: “She went missing from Meadowlands Drive in Newlands on Tuesday, 2 August. “She was spotted one street over, on Kitty Lane, the following morning. A $300 reward is being offered for the return of this special girl!”

If you have any information on Ebony’s whereabouts, please contact the Humane Society on 949 1461 or 326 1461 after hours. 6

The proposed cruise-ship jetty site at Spotts Landing. Rebuilding the cruise-ship jetty at Spotts Landing will not start until at least late autumn or early winter -and possibly not until next spring. The Planning Department says it has never received any paperwork for the project, and will require approximately two months to study the plans before sending it to the Central Planning Authority for adjudication. Meanwhile, the main contractor for the $3 million construction, the China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC), has said it does not want to disrupt operations at Spotts during the tourist season, roughly between October and March; meaning work at the jetty may not start before April 2012. The pier is used chiefly during

hurricane season, between 1 June and 1 December as an emergency alternate to George Town when storms make the chief anchorage unsafe. Originally, officials had predicted rebuilding the jetty, approximately 12 feet wide and nearly 150 feet long, at the end of July, but work never started as government said contracts had not been made final. Haroon Pandohie, director of the Department of Planning, told iNews that no paperwork had been filed on the project. “We have seen nothing. We have not seen any plans, nothing has been submitted to us,” he said. Describing the approval process, Mr Pandohie said any plans faced a lengthy assessment process, starting

with a 21-day call for public input. “It really depends on the application and what we are dealing with,” he said. “It starts with a 21-day period when we consult with other agencies, get feedback and complete a report. “If there are any issues, we may need to deal with a request for additional information, and that usually takes [another] 21 days. Then, after we complete all the reports, it goes to the board [the Central Planning Authority].” The three-month construction will expand the Spotts existing facilities to include a customs office, rest rooms, a reception area, a widened dock and new upland areas, including roads, a parking area and a large shade area. CHEC, which has already advanced to the government the $3 million cost of the project, told iNews that the group was working on “preliminary elements” of the project including topographical studies, research and environmental assessments, but declined to set a date for groundbreaking. The Spotts dock is the smallest of three proposed seafront projects CHEC is studying – George Town cruise-ship berths and a landing pier at the Cayman Turtle Farm.

Today’s news, tomorrow’s kennel liners Gabrielle Myers Rotaract Blue Cayman Islands is at work in the community again. The month of July was all about their book drive, while this month they are focusing on a newspaper collection drive. Inspired by the fact that July is literacy month in the Rotaract calendar, the group took matters in their own hands and distributed flyers to all it’s members to put in their work places. It was then the responsibility of each member to keep a collection of all the books they received for the drive. There were over a thousand books donated to the cause. 775 were donated to the East End Public Library, while approximately 200 were donated to the University College of the Cayman Islands. Even though the drive is over there are still more books coming in to members of Rotaract Blue for donation. Tunde McDonald the Community Service Director said, “It’s been very successful and I’m hoping to have the same success with the

Spanish duchess taps fortune for OK to wed at 85 supreme title is Duchess of Alba, but she has more than 40 others. They first met decades ago because her then husband - No. 2 was friends with Diez’s brother, an antiques dealer, and after running into each other at a movie theater about three years ago the duchess and Diez eventually started dating. The Duchess of Alba said in a rare radio interview early this year that she wanted to marry Diez but her children - five men and a woman

Stocks tumble as post-Fed relief rally peters out LONDON (AP) - Stocks in Europe and the U.S. tumbled Wednesday, a day after a Federal Reserve pledge to keep extremely low interest rates for two more years temporarily calmed investors’ jitters. The Fed’s surprise announcement Tuesday that it would likely keep its Fed funds rate at near zero percent through 2013 to help the ailing U.S. economy fueled a late Wall Street surge - the Dow Jones industrial average rallied 6 percent just in the final hour of trading, one of the biggest turnarounds ever seen. That continued into Asian and European trading sessions

Wednesday, although traders remained nervous after the market turmoil of recent weeks, which has sent many global markets officially into bear market territory - falling 20 percent from recent peaks. That nervousness became more acute as the U.S. open loomed and European markets gave up all their earlier gains. “So far, panic has eased but fear remains,” said Kit Juckes, an analyst at Societe Generale. In Europe, the FTSE 100 index of leading British shares was down 1.4 percent at 5,093 while Germany’s DAX fell 2.5 percent to 5,814. The CAC-40 in France was 2.5 percent

lower at 3,098. In the U.S., the Dow Jones industrial average was down 2.7 percent at 10,940 while the broader Standard & Poor’s 500 index fell 2.6 percent to 1,141.

Cameron: UK won’t let ‘culture of fear’ take over LONDON (AP) - Britain will not let a “culture of fear” take over its streets, Prime Minister David Cameron insisted Wednesday, saying police have drawn up contingency plans to use water cannon if necessary to remove rioters from the streets. Thousands of extra police officers on the streets kept a nervous London quiet after three nights of rioting, but looting flared in Manchester and Birmingham, where a murder probe was opened after three men were killed in a hit-and-run reportedly as they took to the streets to deter potential rioters. “We will do whatever is necessary

to restore law and order onto our streets,” Cameron said in a somber televised statement. “Nothing is off the table” - including water cannon, commonly used in Northern Ireland but never deployed in mainland Britain. Cameron has recalled Parliament from its summer recess for an emergency debate on the riots Thursday. An eerie calm prevailed in the capital Wednesday, where hundreds of shops were shuttered early or boarded up Tuesday night as a precaution, but unrest spread across England on a fourth night of violence by brazen crowds of young people.

Unrest, youth and smart phones Colin Wilson

The pictures and reports coming from England over the past few days are disturbing to say the least. That the unrest is coming mainly from the youth, however, is not surprising. Whilst one can label the latest violence on the streets of London that has spread to other parts of England, as the work of ‘yobs’ and ‘hooligans’, it is only mimicking the student activism that went before in March. I say, ‘mimicking’ because one might say students have a genuine grievance – budget cuts have forced them to actually pay for their tuition – but the wanton destruction and looting of property taking place now is abhorrent to everyone who has a brain. The wide use of the Blackberry BBM, iPhones and Twitter accounts by the youth to stir up and inflame the violence is a real cause for alarm. On just one BBM in Twitter during the mayhem, it read, “There’s a recruitment broadcast going around on bbm to gather hoodrats to start a riot. Just received 3 BBM Messages detailing a new organised ‘Riot’ plan complete with ‘Loot Rules’.” Blackberry has targeted Britain’s urban youth for years through its long-standing partnership with rapper Jay-Z and various hip-hop concerts they have promoted. Here in the Cayman Islands LIME has been heavily promoting Blackberry with all sorts of data plans, Internet service together with plans entitled Blackberry Social giving unlimited use of Blackberry applications for the social

networks – Facebook, MySpace and Twitter. It is the youth that is being targeted here, too. It is common knowledge that the armed criminal elements here (the scumbags) that have been robbing local businesses have been using Blackberrys to receive information from a hidden accomplice to target and make their getaway. The accomplice is able to message them where the police are. It takes very little to start a riot. It’s like a fire. A small spark, the right conditions and you have an inferno on your hands. The youth here is disenchanted. There is unemployment on a scale never felt here before and they are the ones taking the brunt of it. Most of the crime taking place here now is from the youth. They need something to do and they need money. They need to feel they are part of the community. The youth is our future and what I see for the future is not a pretty sight. Let us hope what is happening in England will not happen here. It’s no use our saying it cannot happen. Having lived in England for over half my life I never thought I would witness these horrific scenes today. It’s the 20th anniversary of the Internet and progress always comes at a price. It’s not only a gun that can be used as a weapon. In idle hands, anything is there for the taking. And our youth know how to use the latest technology better than anyone else. colin.wilson@ieyenews.com

Death of America Joyce Pursley

From the first day the USA was founded to the days since Bill Clinton left office was, for me, the last time America was in touch with reality. The USA was not founded by politicians, it was founded by leaders. Leaders that were born and did not have to be educated to lead the country. I remember well when all most folks needed was a high school diploma to get most jobs. But over the years this has changed. Since the Bush and Obama years, college education is the

primary concern today. Without it how can you improve yourself today? Eventually every job we have will not only require a college education but a credit check as well. A simple job like working at McDonald’s will probably need certification in the culinary field. Retailers will require certain types of Business Degrees from their employees. Politicians, both Democrat and Republicans, are destroying everything the USA stands for as they blame each other for all our woes and

seem to enjoy their constant rivalry on the playground of tax dollars. When are we going to elect politicians who support the people and not the evil party politics? When are we going to have a justice system that gives back control of our country to the people? Political fraud is the big popular crime the USA is dealing with and we know who you are! Your days are numbered. If not – it is the death of the USA. joyce.pursley@ieyenews.com

Hyperbaric Chamber seeks help Ivy Lichtenstein The Cayman Hyperbaric Services is in search of volunteers. They are hoping to teach up to twelve new people how to operate the chamber in a training session coming up in the fall. At present there is a team of 30 volunteers that can be called in at any time of the day to man the chamber. It takes one person to operate, one to keep the patient company in the chamber and a senior operator to oversee. Volunteers are all PADI qualified divers, Director John Elliott said, “Every one of us are divers and first of all, we do it because it is in our blood. No one gets involved for the financial benefits of it.” Depending on the nature of the patient, treatment can run anywhere from two – six hours. Some medical conditions require a two-hour treatment everyday or even twice a day for a period of

twenty sessions. One treatment usually solves the issue but should treatment be delayed, it may take up to two or three treatments to do the job. There are twelve approved treatments that can be done in the chamber. Decompression Sickness, Carbon Monoxide poisoning and even a Brown Recluse Spider bites are among a few. The Hyperbaric Chamber was first brought on the island in 1971 where it resided at Cayman Clinic. Its first patient was treated in 1972 and moved to the Cayman Islands Hospital in 1996. The Cayman Hyperbaric Services is a privately run company but runs as a service for the hospital and diving industry. Mrs. Ann Elliott, Co - Director said, “We need enough persons to call out; to help cope with the natural loss of our volunteers, for example,

people leaving the island. Also, to help cover people on holidays and those who are sick.” The Cayman Hyperbaric Services can be contacted at 949-8600 ext.2579 or 949-2989. You can also email them at diveraid@candw.ky. ivy.lichtenstein@ieyenews.com

Fundraiser for local designer Bobsy Friends and clients of well-known local fashion designer Diane Ulett, fondly known as Bobsy, are organising a fundraising event to be held on August 31st at the Rooftop Lounge beginning at 6.30pm. Miss Ulett recently underwent major cancer surgery in Miami and is expected to remain there for the next six months undergoing chemotherapy treatment. It is hoped that funds raised from this event will assist her when she returns, having not been able to work for many months. There will be a Fashion Parade ‘Scruples Through the Years’, which will feature many stunning creations by Ms. Ulett. The show will highlight her

designs and work through the many years she was acknowledged as the first local designer in Cayman. Many will remember the stunning gowns designed and made by her for some of the Miss Cayman contestants. Some of these creations will be on sale at the event. In addition, there will be an Art Auction with pieces kindly donated by local artists such as Al Ebanks, Gordon Solomon, Luelan Bodden, Chris Christian, Horacio Estaban and many more. A live Dutch Auction is also planned with many exciting prizes and should prove to be a fun filled affair. Live music will be provided during the evening by Mainstream

and Vanguard, a wine tasting by Jacques Scott and a variety of delectable canapés from Lighthouse Restaurant, Grand Old House, Brasserie, Casanova, Hemmingways and Deckers to name a few. Tickets are available at Arabus and Le Classique at $35.00 . There are three wonderful Gate Prizes which will be drawn during the course of the evening. Tickets for two to Little Cayman and a weekend for two at the Marriott Beach Resort. Committee members hope the public will support their effort to help Ms. Ulett during this difficult period to ensure a smooth transition on her return home.

Paul Byles announced new JA President Junior Achievement (JA) Cayman Islands recently carried out its annual elections and the new board announced plans to celebrate the programme’s 20th anniversary and also announced the election of its new President Mr. Paul Byles. Mr. Byles has served on the JA board for the past few years and is past President of Rotary Central, the community service club which founded the programme with the Chamber of Commerce in 1991. Mr. Byles said, “This year marks 20 years of successful contribution to our youth. We will be proudly marking our achievements and inviting parents, JA alumni, former advisors and board members, volunteers, companies and individuals who have sponsored and participated in the JA programme. The wider community are welcome to join us as we celebrate one of the most successful youth initiatives in this country over the past 2 decades” Mr. Byles also acknowledged the significant contributions of immediate past president Mr. Pat Randall who will continue on the board as JA’s Vice President this year. “Pat has not only served as an excellent President over the past

few years, but he has been an instrumental member of the JA board since its inception. On behalf of the JA board I wish to thank him for his significant contributions and I look forward to working with him during this year which is an important year for Junior Achievement”, said Mr. Byles. JA recently had a strategic retreat to identify ways to improve the programme and solidify its success for the future for Cayman’s youth. Ms Teresa Foster, JA’s administrator explained that the board has identified a number of ways for the programme to grow and said that the 20th anniversary was an apt time to reflect on JA’s contributions to the Cayman Islands community. Mr. Byles said that funding for JA

remains its biggest challenge and that the board plans a significant outreach to the community to secure funding for its strategic plans going forward. “There are many good corporate and individual citizens in our community who have supported JA in the past and currently. The success of JA over the past two decades would not have been possible without these firms and individuals. I am confident that in the near future when we invite them to consider the significant support required, many of them will step up to assist us”, said Mr. Byles. JA said that it is revamping its sponsorship programme and will be announcing changes in the near future.

Texaco gives away another $20,000 cash prize Christopher Tobutt Texaco wraps up the Unbeatable Promotion with another $20,000 Grand Prize. When the final grand prize was drawn live on Cayman 27’s Daybreak at Walkers Road Texaco, the winner who fills up at the same location just happened to be right next door. Juan Garcia was in shock when Z99 DJs Jason Howard and Morgan Malewicz called to tell him he won $20,000 in the Texaco Unbeatable Promotion. The Cayman Imports employee, and father of two, quickly walked across the car park to the service station. After getting over the initial shock, Mr. Garcia told of his plans to put the money to very good use, “I would like to buy a house.” Now with an extra $20,000 in the bank, he is closer to making his dream of home-ownership come true. Mr. Garcia was the second Cayman resident to drive away from Texaco $20,000 richer. On June 29th primary school teacher Ruby Petrie won the first of the two grand prizes in the Texaco Unbeatable Promotion. Chevron Caribbean Inc., through its Texaco Brand, has become known for its Unbeatable Promotions, giving away over $12,000 in fuel

vouchers in June and July as well. In year’s past, Texaco has given away numerous cars and other prizes, but this year decided to give cash prizes. According to Chevron’s Area Marketing Support Coordinator Howard Henry, “We surveyed our customers and the overwhelming response was that cash is king.” In addition to the two cash grand prizes, Texaco partnered with Z99

Inmates hit the books Inmates continue to take advantage of education opportunities under the penal system’s rehabilitation programme – and according to reports, exam successes are increasing. The United Kingdom’s City and Guilds (C&G) examination centre recently submitted results from the last examinations in July. All six passed their maths exams: One acing the Numeracy Stage-Two paper with distinction; while the other five passed Numeracy Stage-Three (two of them with distinction). Seven candidates passed Level One English, five at the first-class level. Others took the English for Business Communication exam, resulting in

14

one first-class pass and seven others attaining passing grades. “I am delighted by our inmates’ continued academic successes,” said Prison Service Director Dwight Scott. He said that several factors had contributed to the encouraging results. These included an increasing acceptance of the educational programme on the part of prisoners, a renewed focus by his own educators and officers, and strong backing from the Portfolio of Internal and External Affairs. Between May 2009 and October 2010, 67 inmates passed exams in subjects such as spreadsheet

to give away $400 in fuel vouchers per day. “We thank all of our loyal customers and new customers for trusting their cars to the Star,” says Henry, “and we are committed to keep offering great service, great performance and Unbeatable Promotions to Cayman’s drivers.”

Cayman’s model airplane “The Journey is the Reward”

Christopher Tobutt It’s been just over four years since Stephen Pontin-Warltier a longtime model aircraft enthusiast, formed the Cayman Islands Model Flying Association along with fellow enthusiast Andre Archer.

What if you could choose who to be despite your circumstances?

Coaching works for you to identify and achieve your most important goals. Benefits include: - increased power, integrity communication and balance in life

Club Secretary Steve Pontin-Warltier

“Andre and I were probably the founding members. There were pockets of people flying all over but nobody was organised. I put an advertisement in the newspaper January 2007 and we formed the club,” he said. President of the club, Andre Archer said, “I started off seriously in 1984, with model helicopters, after watching the TV show Air Wolf.” Mr. Pontin-Warltier has been fascinated by model aircraft since he was ten years old. “There was no radio when I started. They just set a little bit of rudder and flew round in a big circle. When the gas ran out they came down and you just hoped they landed O.K.” he said. Today Mr. Pontin-Warltier is the proud owner of more than 20 model aircraft.

The one he was getting ready cost around CI$900, including the radio. “This one’s engine works on ordinary petrol with a synthetic oil. It’s a two stroke engine. “There’s a smoke system on it and when I throw a switch it’ll leave a trail of smoke behind it,” he said. “You can’t start off flying this…you’ve got to start off flying a trainer. A trainer is much easier to fly,” he says. A trainer is also a lot cheaper, costing only about half the price of the one Mr. PontinWarltier was busy preparing. The club presently has 27 members who once a week meet on a piece of open ground at the end of Sparkys Drive in George Town. Kids are also encouraged to get involved and the youngest member, Mr. Pontin-Warltier’s son, is only

enthusiasts are flying high five years old. Flying can be much harder than people think, according to Mr. Pontin-Warltier, and even pilots of full-sized aircraft make the mistake of underestimating the difficulty of remotely flying a model. The Association strives to be beginner-friendly, so anyone who is interested can come along to

the meetings and try their hand at flying a trainer aircraft, using dual control-boxes called ‘buddy boxes,’ before committing themselves to buying an aircraft. For those who join, the club offers a step-by-step programme of tuition and support. “We have an award scheme to recognise competence and safety. The first stage is the

Bronze Certificate, which allows the club member to fly without an instructor. “The Silver certificate basically is the next step; and Gold is really for experts.” he said. Reminders for Roaming Claire O’Dea

Here are a few things worth considering before going on your next journey: • Before travelling, check with your provider that your account is provisioned for roaming. • Providers have roaming partner arrangements specific to different countries so you can always ask your network what the preferred choice of roaming networks are for the countries you are visiting.

Register online early to avoid long lines. Classes fill up quickly. 168 Olympic Way, GT

623-UCCI (8224)

www.ucci.edu.ky

• Some network providers offer special roaming add-ons for example Digicel’s BlackBerry Data Passport. Rather than charging per MB of data used, this flat monthly fee covers up to 100MB of BlackBerry data when roaming to avoid incurring large data costs when abroad. ®

®

Criollo

Summer Sale!

• Call minutes and texts that are included in your monthly package are not applicable when roaming. • Incoming calls to your cell phone are not free! You can check with your service provider the cost of receiving a call when abroad. • Be conscious of the fact that you get charged for voicemails left on your phone as they are considered incoming calls even if you don’t check them once received. Another option is to disable your voicemail.

Buy Criollo Reserva Chardonnay, Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Malbec Rosé at 50% off!

• When travelling, it may be necessary to do a manual network search to recognize the new network especially if you are visiting multiple destinations.

Regular Price: $14 per bottle now only $7!

• Wi-Fi hotspots increase data transfer speed and decrease data roaming costs so where possible (being wary of low security on public networks) you can connect to free or low-cost hotspots for your data and internet needs.

Call us at 943 3333 or email info@premier.ky to place your order.

“Almost anything else might have been forgiven”

Part 21 Reaching the village street at last, they flew across it, and out on the icy pier beyond, where Rast by a skillful manœuvre stopped the sled on the very verge. The fort ladies were all at the windows now, watching. “How dangerous!” Said Mrs. Bryden, forgetting her admiration of a moment before with a mother’s irrelevant rapidity. “Albert, let me never see or hear of your sliding on that pier; another inch, and they would have gone over, down on the broken ice below!” “I couldn’t do it, mamma, even if I tried,” replied Master Albert, regretfully; “I always tumble off the sled at the street, or else run into one of the warehouses. Only Rast Pronando can steer across slanting, and out on that pier.” “I am very glad to hear it,” replied Mrs. Bryden; “but your father must also give you his positive commands on the subject. I had no idea that the pier was ever attempted.” “And it is not, mamma, except by Rast,” said the boy. “Can’t I try it when I am as old as he is?” “Hear the child!” Said Mrs. Cromer, going back to her seat by the fire; “one would suppose he expected to stay here all his life. Do you not know, Bert that we are only here for a little while—a year or two? Before you are eighteen months older very likely you will find yourself out on the plains. What a life it is!” The fort ladies all sighed. It was a habit they had. They drew the dreariest pictures of their surroundings and privations in their letters homeward, and really believed them, theoretically. In truth, there were some privations; but would any one of them have exchanged army life for civilian? To the last, thorough army ladies retain their ways; you recognize them even when retired to private and perhaps more prosperous life. Cosmopolitans, they do not sink into the ruts of small-town life; they

are never provincial. They take the world easily, having a pleasant, generous taste for its pleasures, and making light of the burdens that fall to their share. All little local rules and ways are nothing to them: neither here nor anywhere is they to remain long. With this habit and manner they keep up a vast amount of general cheeriness—vast indeed, when one considers how small the incomes sometimes are. But if small, they are also sure. “Rast Pronando is too old for such frolics, I think,” said Mrs. Rankin, the lieutenant’s wife, beginning another seam in the new dress for her baby. “He goes to college in the spring; that will quiet him,” said Mrs. Bryden. “What will he do afterward? Is he to live here? At this end of the world—this jumping-off place?” “I suppose so; he has always lived here. But he belongs, you know, to the old Philadelphia family of the same name, the Peter Pronandos.” “Does he? How strange! How did he come here?” “He was born here: Dr. Gaston told me his history. It seems that the boy’s father was a wild younger son of the second Peter, grandson, of course, of the original Peter, from whom the family derive all their greatness— and money. This Peter the third, only his name was not Peter, but John (the eldest sons were the Peters), wandered away from home, and came up here, where his father’s name was well known among the directors of the Fur Company. John Pronando, who must have been of very different fibre from the rest of the family, liked the wild life of the border, and even went off on one or two long expeditions to the Red River of the North and the Upper Missouri after furs with the hunters of the Company. His father then offered him a position here which would carry with it authority, but he curtly refused, saying that he had no

Fenimore Woolson taste for a desk and pen like Peter. Peter was his brother, who had begun dutifully at an early age his life- long task of taking care of the large accumulation of land, which makes the family so rich. Peter was the good boy always. Father Peter was naturally angry with John, and inclined even then to cross his name off the family list of heirs; this, however, was not really done until the prodigal crowned his long course of misdeeds by marrying the pretty daughter of a Scotchman, who held one of the smaller clerkships in the Company’s warehouses here—only a grade above the hunters themselves. This was the end. Almost anything else might have been forgiven save a marriage of that kind. If John Pronando had selected the daughter of a flat-boat man on the Ohio River, or of a Pennsylvania mountain wagoner, they might have accepted her—at a distance—and made the best of her. But a person from the rank and file of their own Fur Company—it was as though a colonel should marry the daughter of a common soldier in his own regiment: yes, worse, for nothing can equal the Pronando pride.

The “Nigerian Scam” Ian Hornby

People’s capacity for stupidity, or that driven by greed, never ceases to amaze me. There’s a new email scam going on in the UK now. That is to say the content is new but it’s the same old scam, often referred to as the Nigerian scam. This latest one is trying the same old things, basically to try and get you to part with your bank details so somebody can rob you. The stupidity involved has two distinct sides. The senders use of English is appalling (luckily - it makes these scams so much easier to spot. This latest one has a genuine address at the top - “New scotland yard, 8-10 broadway, London UK”. That’s verbatim, as if anyone from New Scotland Yard would fail to put capital letters on their address. The theme continues, with names of people and places routinely uncapitalised. It also mentions an email address - katieowen000@ aol.com - as if anyone from New Scotland Yard or Barclays Bank, who are also mentioned in the scam, would have an aol email address. The English isn’t so good either - “You are hereby adviced to respond...” Even the simplest word processors will highlight that the word they mean is “advised”.

We have “the theift that..” (Theft). Now I know standards of literacy and spelling are getting worse by the day but sincerely hope that neither the Metropolitan Police nor Barclays Bank would permit emails as appalling as this to go out in their names. These emails should be routinely deleted as soon as they’re received. A really easy way to spot them is the mention of vast sums of money, in this case, $8.5 million. Unless the email has the word “lottery” somewhere within it, you can’t expect anyone to be offering you anything more than a discount voucher at the local pizza store. (And we all know what the odds of a lottery win are.) This again demonstrates the stupidity of these scam e-mailers. Why haven’t they latched on to the only possibly credible email a person could receive - a lottery win? They’re counting on people seeing big numbers and seeing a way to instant wealth.

All this, put together, highlights the biggest stupidity of all: that people actually respond to these emails. It must be true or the scammers wouldn’t keep sending them after all these years. Wake up out there. There aren’t any genuine get rich quick schemes. Barclays, The Metropolitan Police and a whole host of other organisations never send out emails like these. Never, get it? And nobody honest ever asks for your bank details or Internet passwords. If you use email, never forget the most important key on your keyboard. It’s labelled “delete”. ian.hornby@ieyenews.com

Wal-Mart and Amazon go around Apple App Store NEW YORK (AP) - Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and Amazon.com Inc. on Wednesday revealed new video and book-reading services that are designed for the iPad but bypass Apple Inc.’s fees on content sales. Wal-Mart started to stream video from its Vudu service to the iPad’s Web browser, and Amazon announced the Kindle Cloud Reader, which lets users read e-books. Amazon, the leading seller of e-books, has a Kindle app for the iPad. However, Apple recently forced it to remove a button that launches Amazon’s Kindle website, where users buy books. Apple wants companies to sell their content through its iTunes system, where it gets a 30 percent cut. Media companies are finding Apple’s fees hard to accept. So they are getting around that by avoiding apps that must be distributed through Apple’s App Store, where Apple’s fee policies apply. Earlier this summer, The Financial Times created an app-

TREATS CAFE Wal-Mart’s new video-streaming service. like website for its newspaper to avoid Apple’s fees. The Kindle Cloud Reader is a “Web app,” nearly indistinguishable from a regular app. Users have to go through a few steps to store the app and their books on the iPad. But when that’s done, it’s capable of reading stored books without an Internet connection. Wal-Mart’s Vudu site relies on streaming video, so it does not work without an Internet connection. The

site already works with PC browsers, but the Flash technology used doesn’t work on the iPad. Instead, Vudu is using “Live Streaming” tools from Apple to reach the tablet. Vudu.com’s business model is similar to Apple’s own iTunes. It rents out movies for $1 to $6 for a 24-hour or 48-hour viewing period. It also sells them for $5 and up, which allows viewing any time. Its claim to fame is that it has many movies on the same day they’re released on DVD.

iOpinion

Soccer is the king of sports Dave Martins Horse racing may be the sport of kings, but soccer is the king of sports. Despite the recent FIFA scandals, it is by far the most popular sport in the world. People go entirely mad over this game, following teams around in devotion, painting themselves in outrageous colours, screaming songs collectively without rest (the English are amazing at this), celebrating wins by setting fire to vehicles, getting into fights after matches (the English, again), and people have even been known to shoot their television sets in the wake of a losing soccer game. As to why the game has such a manic hold on people, the answer is easy: it is the simplest game mankind has devised. It is so simple, that even someone new to soccer can have it down pat in about 15 minutes. Even your curvaceous girl friend, coming to her first soccer match, will take one look and say, “Oh, honey, I love this game.” And you can’t blame her. In soccer, players interact with the ball largely with their feet (except the Brazilians, who play with their entire bodies) and there is never any confusion about how play is proceeding. In the NFL or in rugby, you often have to watch the TV replay to know what happened; sometimes the officials themselves, have to consult taped replay before they can make decisions, and players are strolling about and chatting with friends on the other team – “So how’s the family doing Billy Joe?” – to pass the time. In the lull, spectators fiddle and wait, the cheerleaders shake it up, music plays over the p.a. system, and the ladies go to the powder room; in a soccer game in that same amount of time several exciting plays have happened, maybe even a goal scored, and your bimbo girl-friend is jumping all over you. In so many sports (American football; rugby; lacrosse) spectators often are not sure about what is happening until the officials make a decision. In soccer, you always know. In American football, players tumble

over the goal-line, the ball is in there somewhere, but you don’t know what happened until an official puts his arms in the air like somebody at a soca fete. In cricket, Lord helps us if it rains and something called DuckworthLewis comes into play. This formula, used in a major outdoor sport where it often rains, is, believe it or not, a complete mystery to most people – the formula is probably locked in a vault at Lord’s and known only to two English guys with umbrellas – so the entire game comes to a halt while the experts do the math. In the meantime, the players lounge on the grass, the umpires fold their arms and stroll, and the TV commentators tell stories to pass the time. If you’re watching at home, you can go to the kitchen, organize something to eat and drink, put the cat out, and come back to your TV not having missed a thing; indeed, they may still be calculating. Such a situation is incomprehensible in soccer. Where a light sprinkle can curtail cricket or tennis or golf, soccer players battle on in pouring rain. Also, the rules in soccer are child’s play. Apart from the judgemental offside rule, soccer has no complicated playing or scoring system (consider tennis with its wacky 15 for the first two points and 10 for the third) and the game doesn’t stop every 30 seconds while officials sort out where things stand,

as in American football. You have to be an expert in physics and the laws of motion to be able to explain cricket to the initiate. The leg-before rule, for example, is even proving troublesome for today’s video technology that is used to try and predict the path of the ball, and countries have come to the point of war on the criteria that determine whether a bowler is “chucking” or not. In soccer, you kick or head the ball, the referee blows the final whistle, and everybody has a beer. Finally, one of the factors behind soccer’s ability to generate frenzy in normally calm individuals is probably the degree of tension that builds during penalty shoot-outs. It is arguably the most dramatic moment in sport, and again it is so for its simplicity. One man standing in a goal; the ball is set a few yards away, and another man tries to kick it past the guy in the goal. Two men and one kick, in one moment. That is as simple as it can get, and the result is in your face; immediate; obvious; unquestioned. The consequence of a miss is therefore enormous, and the expectation of it is gripping. Grown men, devoted followers of the game, are sometimes unable to watch it; the girl friend is going bananas. That’s soccer; the king of sports. dave.martins@ieyenews.com

iSports New LA football stadium moves step closer Writen by : Victoria Anderson

APPLY SUNSCREEN PROPERLY.

The end of the school year is here and savvy moms and dads by now have made all the arrangements for summer. Summer camps and leisurely days at the pool or beach are just a few of the summer rituals for many families. However if you're tempted to let your child play outdoors for even a few minutes without proper sun protection, you might want to think twice. Adolescence and childhood are critical periods during which exposure to UV radiation is more likely to contribute to skin cancer in later life. Children with fair skin, blond or red hair and blue or green eyes are at the highest risk of sunburn. But darker-skinned children also need sun protection. With this in mind, it’s important that parents teach their children how to enjoy fun in the sun safely.

LIMIT OUTDOOR PLAYTIME BETWEEN 10A.M. AND 4P.M.

Apply a thick, even coat to all exposed areas 20 - 30 minutes before your child goes out in the sun. Choose a sunscreen with SPF (Sun Protection Factor) 15 or higher. Make sure it's labeled "broad spectrum," which means it blocks both UVA and UVB sunlight. For your little ones, sunscreen that contains zinc oxide or titanium dioxide should be selected as these compounds are less irritating than others. Sunscreen sticks are best for the face because they are sweat proof and less likely to drip. Don't forget nose, ears, hands, feet, shoulders, and behind the neck; lips can also burn, so apply a lip balm with SPF protection. Reapply sunscreen every 2 to 3 hours, or after sweating or swimming.

COVER FROM HEAD TO TOE. Wearing protective clothing and hats is one of the primary ways of warding off UV damage. When wet, light coloured clothing transmits just as much sunlight as bare skin. Keep your kids covered with dark colours, long sleeves, and pants whenever possible. And don't forget the accessories: sunglasses with UV protection to guard against burned corneas, and hats to prevent sunburned scalps and faces. Protective clothing, hats with wide brims, and sunglasses are just as important for babies. At the beach, bring along a large umbrella.

Parents, you are the best teacher by practicing sun safety yourself. If your child sees you following sun safety rules, he'll take them for granted and follow suit. Teach every member of the family how to protect their skin and eyes. With proper supervision, children can learn to protect themselves and enjoy summer fun without sacrificing the health of their skin.

Avoid unnecessary exposure when the sun's rays are at their strongest. Even on cloudy or cooler days, ultraviolet (UV) rays remain strong. Shady spots can be just as tricky because of reflected light. If your child is playing outdoors during these hours, make sure to apply ample sunscreen.

WATCH OUT FOR MEDICATIONS. Some medications increase the skin's sensitivity to the sun, so make sure to ask your doctor whether your child may be at risk. Prescription antibiotics and acne medications are the most notorious culprits, but when in doubt, ask.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The developers seeking to build an NFL stadium in downtown Los Angeles were granted a City Council endorsement that they had long stressed was necessary to prove to league officials that their plan has public support. Anschutz Entertainment Group president and chief executive Tim Leiweke said that the council’s 12-0 vote in favor of a framework deal on the project’s funding and timeline sends a strong message to the NFL that the city is behind the proposal for a 72,000seat NFL stadium on the city’s convention center campus. “Today proved we have a vision (and) they’re behind it,” he said. “We just got through the politics.” The agreement anticipates the issuance of $275 million in taxexempt bonds for the relocation of a convention center hall to accommodate the proposed $1.2 billion football venue known as Farmers Field. It would require AEG to extend a series of financial guarantees over the course of the project as a safeguard against shortfalls and other risks. The Los Angeles council members are set to take up the additional binding votes over the next nine months, with groundbreaking on the new venue possible as early as June. “This is not the beginning of the end but perhaps the end of the beginning,” Councilman Eric Garcetti said before the vote was taken.

Lee scattered four hits and had 10 strikeouts in addition to his second career homer, leading the Philadelphia Phillies to a 2-1 victory Tuesday night. It was team broadcaster and former slugger Gary Matthews Sr. who gave him the inspiration to swing for the fences. “On the way over, Sarge was talking about the guys that had hit the ball out of the stadium (Willie Stargell twice, Mark McGwire and Mike Piazza), and I was just jokingly saying that I was going to do it today,” Lee said. “Obviously I didn’t hit one out of the stadium, but I hit one. I was just joking around with those guys. I never expected that to happen. “Pitching eight innings without giving up a run is great. I feel really good about that. And anytime I do something with the bat — hitting a home run or getting a bunt down — it leads to positive things for the team.” Lee drove a 2-0 pitch into the pavilion in right field with one out in the seventh against lefty Ted Lilly, who has given up a team-high 25 homers this season.

JOHNS CREEK, Ga. (AP) - Tiger Woods is taking the high road in his nasty split with caddie Steve Williams. Woods says Wednesday he was happy to see Adam Scott win a World Golf Championship last week. He said he even sent a text of congratulations to his ex-caddie, who now works for the Australian. He says he was surprised that Williams took a shot at him on national TV when the tournament was over, and that they have exchanged texts since then. Woods says that’s between him and his former caddie, and he doesn’t want to speculate why Williams was so motivated to win.

GENEVA (AP) Swiss watchmaker Tag Heuer says it’s ended its 10-year commercial relationship with Tiger Woods and hopes he can “overcome his difficulties.”

Tag Heuer chief executive Jean-Christophe Babin says in a statement the company is “confident that Tiger will eventually regain full trust with the public.” Woods has “huge talent and mental strength (which) will help him overcome his difficulties,” Babin says. Tag Heuer stopped promoting Woods’ image in the United States in December 2009, weeks after revelations about his marital problems began to emerge. Babin said then Tag Heuer had to “take account of the sensitivity of some consumers.”
